The PDF reader ranked #10 in Thailand's Productivity chart: a Vietnamese tools-app factory switched categories
What it is A standard PDF reader: view PDFs, scan, merge and split, image-to-PDF, and open Word and Excel files too. It earns through ads plus in-app purchases.
Why it took off A Vietnamese tools-app factory opened a new account and used local-language titles in 17 storefronts to target the "PDF reader" search term. Likely it bought installs in places like Thailand, Turkey, and Indonesia, where an install costs only a few cents, pushed into the low-barrier Productivity free chart, then rode organic traffic.
DHow you could follow it Don't build a generic PDF reader. Copy the skeleton (keyword-stuffed package names and titles, per-store localization, low-price countries to climb category charts, ad monetization), and apply it to a niche file category or a smaller language that the factory hasn't covered and that the system keeps surfacing.
- Data (updated daily) · first launch 2026-09-16 · 11-07 installs 441,803
Android · Total installs worldwide Data 2026-10-29 → 2026-11-07 (10 days, 10 observations). Google's detail page only refreshes install counts every other day, so a flat day doesn't mean nobody installed.
"PDF Reader, All PDF Opener" went live on Google Play in mid-September and sat dormant for a month. Around 20 October it suddenly took off, reaching 440k installs in two weeks and cracking the top 10 Top Free charts for productivity in Thailand, Turkey and Indonesia. It has no new features. Behind it is a Vietnamese tool-app factory: a dozen-plus apps, roughly 170M installs combined, now running the same playbook on the PDF category. Below: how it got started, where the money comes from, how crowded this niche is, and what you can take from it.
Sandwiched between ChatGPT and Claude at #10
Nov 6, Google Play Thailand Productivity free chart: #1 was ByteDance's Dola, #2 ChatGPT, #7 Gemini, #9 Claude. The #10 app's Thai title was "อ่าน PDF เปิดทุกไฟล์ PDF" ("Read PDF, open all PDF files"), developer Office Tools Pro.
Among the top 20 on the same chart, 10 were PDF or document readers.
Its store listing's first line on Nov 6 read "Discover the ultimate PDF reader and viewer!" An earlier saved version was different: "Discover the ultimate PDF Box: PDF reader and viewer!" PDF Box is a similar app from another developer, Wah Hub, released in late July, now with 4.25M installs. The copy was adapted from someone else's listing, and one name was missed and only fixed later (inferred). This detail more or less sums up the app: it doesn't win on product, it wins on a mass-publishing pipeline.
What it is
In one line: a standard PDF reader. Open PDFs, night mode, bookmarks, search; scan documents with the camera into PDFs; merge, split, annotate; image-to-PDF; open docx, xls, and ppt too. That feature list is the same across dozens of similar apps, even the listing phrasing ("Imagine having an entire office in your pocket").
Monetization: ads, with in-app purchases priced at $3.79–$26.99 (store page). It has not charted in any country's top-grossing list. The store doesn't display a rating count, and only 3 reviews are visible, all in Turkish, from October 25–27: two 5-star ("çok iyi" very good, "cokbeyendim" really liked it) and one 1-star ("berbat" terrible).
Dormant for a month, then 400k in two weeks
Cumulative global install curve (10-08 to 10-28 is AppstoreSpy estimates, after that it is Google Play's daily cumulative installs):
| Timeline | Total installs | Roughly added per day |
|---|---|---|
| 9-16 launch → 10-16 | 3,786 | Around a hundred |
| 10-21 | 20k | 7K |
| 10-25 | 135k | Peak single day 55k |
| 10-29 | 146k | Stopped for two or three days, nearly zero |
| 11-02 | 384k | about 60k |
| 11-06 | 442k | 1.4–15k |
The app sat at almost nothing for a full month after launch. Then around Oct 20 the spending switched on, paused for two days, switched on again, and from November it was pulling in over ¥10K a day. A shape like on, off, on, up is hard for organic growth to produce. It looks more like someone turning paid campaigns on and off from a budget in the back end (my inference, I haven't seen its ad data).
Chart positions followed the curve: 10-29 Thailand Productivity free #6, Turkey #9 (also reached #10 on Turkey's overall app chart), Indonesia 12, Malaysia and Taiwan 17, Vietnam 22, Brazil 27; by 11-06, Thailand 10, Indonesia 14, Turkey 21, Vietnam 24, and Brazil dropped out of the top 150.
Who is behind it: a Vietnamese tools-app factory
The developer site lux-link.net belongs to a company called LuxLink. Its homepage advertises "Mobile Development / App Monetization / UIUX," and the "Download Now" button points straight to Office Tools Pro's developer page. The contact email [email protected] looks like it was created in September 2025.
Digging further from this site:
- The same lux-link.net is also the official site for the prank app "Haha Broken, Broken Screen" (developer Smart Technology Labs, 14M installs);
- Other Smart Technology Labs apps sit under 5star-software.com, sharing accounts with Go Technology Global, Sky Technology Labs, and a few others;
- Under these two domains I counted 16 apps, roughly 169M installs combined (Google Play, 11-06): Flash Alert (flashing call alerts) 57.3M, All Recovery (data recovery) 29.1M, clap-to-find-phone 21M, anti-theft alarm 10.9M, speaker cleaner 1.95M (up 340k that week alone), plus IPTV, AR drawing, and a translator;
- The 5star-software.com server is in Ho Chi Minh City; the translator's package name contains the Vietnamese word "trangoai"; one email address is hazardphan, and Phan is a common Vietnamese surname.
In other words, one team runs multiple developer accounts and rolls out tools apps category by category. Opening a new "Office Tools Pro" just for PDF and office apps separates account risk by category (inferred). Even the package names follow the same pattern: no leading com., just search terms strung together, such as pdfgo.pdfreader.allofficedocumentreader and speakercleaner.watereject.dustremover.
Where users come from
- Paid acquisition (likely, not directly confirmed). The on-off shape of the curve; the apps that charted were mostly in Thailand, Turkey, Indonesia, Vietnam, and Malaysia, where an install costs only a few cents; the parent company's site puts "App Monetization" on its homepage; other apps from the same factory also charted in these countries. Meta and TikTok (Europe) ad libraries returned nothing for it, but absence there doesn't mean no spend; tools apps like this mostly buy Google's app ads (inferred).
- Store search (confirmed). 17 storefronts had their titles switched to local language, all targeting the "PDF reader / open PDF" search term: Turkish "PDF Okuyucu, Tüm PDF'leri Aç," Korean "PDF 리더, 모든 PDF 파일 열기," Taiwanese "PDF閱讀器 - PDF檢視與編輯." The package names are keywords too.
- Climbing category charts on organic traffic. The Productivity free charts in Thailand and Turkey have low entry thresholds, so a few tens of thousands of installs in a day can break the top ten; once on the chart, the app keeps picking up traffic from the chart and from search.
- "Open with" (inferred). When you receive a PDF or Word file in LINE, WhatsApp, or Telegram, your phone asks which app to open it with. Install one once and it keeps getting launched, and every open is an ad impression. That's where this category makes its money.
- Content and media: none. Nobody talks about it on X, TikTok, or the web. Only auto-generated pages from AppBrain and Similarweb mention it.
Who it's competing with: a bloodbath
2026 May or later, 225 apps with PDF or Document Reader in the name have charted on Google Play. 31 of them each gained over 100k in the last 7 days, 7.09M combined. This one added +295k this week and ranks around #29 in the PDF category.
| Product | Launched | Scale (Google Play installs, 11-06) | How it differs |
|---|---|---|---|
| Adobe Acrobat Reader | 2010 | 945M, +1.51M in 7 days | Brand and real editorial capability, subscription model |
| WPS Office | 2011 | 832M, +2.15M in 7 days | Full office suites |
| PDF Reader / Document Reader(QR Code Scanner.) | 2022 | 433M / 133M | Same playbook from an established factory, #5 and #8 on the Thailand chart |
| PDF Reader – PDF Viewer(EZTech Apps) | 2022 | 252M | Same product |
| PDF ProX(Office Suite Pro) | 2025-04 | 33M, +1.25M in 7 days | Same product, a year and a half earlier. #3 in Thailand, #1 in South Korea |
| PDF Reader: View All PDFs(Lumio Tech)/ Readdock | 2025 | 21.2M / 11.4M | Same product, each gaining about 1M a week |
| PDF Box (Wah Hub), Reampo, PDF Pilot, ApolloPDF, PDoc | 2026-07~10 | 500k–4.25M | Same timing, same playbook, same scale |
| The PDF viewer built into Google Drive / Files | Preinstalled | System level | Free, no ads |
It doesn't beat anyone on quality. It just has a ready-made pipeline that more copies of the same product were built on.
How many people know about it
Almost nobody knows about it: no disclosed revenue, no press coverage, no discussion on X or TikTok. But that's not a sign of opportunity. This category doesn't run on being known. It runs on paid acquisition and search, and the factories that know how are already crowded in.
If it were you
D: Look into it, but don't chase it. It runs on a factory's pipeline: a dozen acquisition and monetization playbooks that have worked before, ready-made ad SDKs, multiple developer accounts, and enough cash to survive losing money before it makes any. The PDF reader spot is already taken by dozens of identical factories, and the leaders are tens to thousands of times bigger than this one.
Who it's for: teams already building utility apps, with Google App Campaigns experience and tens of thousands of dollars to burn on testing, looking to add a category. Or people who want to study this playbook as a textbook.
Who it's not for: one or two indie devs who haven't run paid acquisition. A PDF reader has no technical barrier and no way to differentiate, so organic installs get eaten by rivals adding hundreds of thousands a day. Ad monetization means spending upfront, and it only pays back in countries where each user is worth a few cents.
How to do it: If you really want in, don't build a general PDF reader. Copy the skeleton, but swap in a smaller category that gets reopened by the system repeatedly (a specific file format, a specific scanning use case), or a language factories haven't seriously localized for. What to copy: keep the package name and title built around one search term; write titles in the local language for each store; sit in a low-competition category; buy installs cheaply in a low-cost country to climb the category chart first, then see if organic installs hold once you're charting.
How to acquire users: Run Google App Campaigns in Southeast Asia and Turkey with small budgets split by country. Check whether cost per install can come in below the per-user ad revenue you estimate, and only add budget once the math works. Don't count on content or social. Nobody shares a PDF reader.
When to get in: There's no window here. The PDF reader spot is already packed and will only get more expensive.
Signs you've got this wrong: ① Installs re-accelerate after November and it charts the top grossing list in some country, which would mean monetization in this category is better than it looks and factories are doubling down. ② A PDF reader built by one or two people, with no paid acquisition, holds a top-20 spot on a small country's productivity chart by owning a specific use case (say, Thai ID card scanning). That would mean the vertical gap is still open. ③ The opposite: if it drops out of every top-50 list a month from now and the store page stops updating, this wave was a chart-climbing test that the factory itself decided wasn't worth it.

Why PDF Reader, All PDF Opener (pdfgo.pdfreader.allofficedocumentreader) managed to break through
Channel: Google Play | Developer account: Office Tools Pro | First store release: 2026-09-16 | Research date: 2026-11-06
Bottom line
This isn't an app that took off on product novelty. It's another "PDF reader" from a Vietnamese utility app factory (LuxLink / 5star-software, a group of developer accounts with 16 apps and about 169M installs combined), built on a mature pipeline: standardized features, store pages localized into 17 languages, and paid installs in low-cost markets like Thailand, Turkey, Indonesia, and Vietnam to climb the productivity free chart. It earns back through ads (plus $3.79–$26.99 in-app purchases). Its differentiation is nearly zero. It got this far because of distribution tactics and the team's ability to reuse them, not because of the product.
1. Data (source: our googleplay database, 2026-10-29 to 11-06)
| Date | Cumulative global installs | New |
|---|---|---|
| 10-29 | 146,496 | – |
| 10-31 | 260,082 | +113,586 (in two days) |
| 11-02 | 383,513 | +123,431 (in two days) |
| 11-04 | 413,601 | +30,088 (in two days) |
| 11-06 | 441,803 | +28,202 (in two days) |
- 7 days, +295,307 new installs, 442k total installs; live for about 7 weeks.
- Curve shape: at the end of October it was about 60k a day, and from November it fell to about 15k a day. That's a typical "one burst of spend to climb the chart, then pull back" pattern (inferred, no spend data available).
- Chart history: as of 10-29, the app ranked #6 in Thailand's Productivity Top Free chart, #9 in Turkey (it also reached #10 on Turkey's overall App Store chart), and charted in Indonesia 12, Malaysia 17, Taiwan 17, Vietnam 22 and Brazil 27. By 11-06, it had slipped in Thailand 10, Indonesia 14 and Turkey 21, and dropped out of Brazil's top 150. Overall rankings are trending down, consistent with installs slowing.
- The store page uses local-language titles in each store: Thai "อ่าน PDF เปิดทุกไฟล์ PDF", Turkish "PDF Okuyucu, Tüm PDF'leri Aç", Korean "PDF 리더, 모든 PDF 파일 열기", Taiwanese "PDF閱讀器 - PDF檢視與編輯", etc. (chart_rank.title, 17 stores in total). This is standard store search optimization (ASO).
- Monetization: ad_supported = True, in-app purchases $3.79–$26.99 (app_snap). Never charted on any top-grossing chart. The store rating count has always been empty (ratings is NULL in the database). The review sample is only 3 Turkish reviews: two 5-star ("çok iyi", "cokbeyendim") and one 1-star ("berbat"). The top review is 2026-10-18.
- Version: as of 10-29, updated to 1.0.6,10-30 1.0.7.
2. Who's behind it: a Vietnamese utility app factory
- Developer website lux-link.net (LuxLink, "Mobile Development / App Monetization / UIUX", with the homepage "Download Now" linking straight to Office Tools Pro's developer page), email [email protected] (account name registered in September 2025). Source: lux-link.net/, app table in the library.
- The same lux-link.net is also the developer website for "Haha Broken, Broken Screen" (Smart Technology Labs, 14M installs, email [email protected]). AppBrain also lists "Easy Technology Global" as using lux-link.net.
- Smart Technology Labs' other apps are listed under 5star-software.com / [email protected], shared with Go Technology Global, GoTechnology Global, Sky Technology Labs, and SkyTechnology Global. Under these two domains our library has 16 apps with about 169M installs combined (library app_profile, 2026-11-06), including Flash Alert (57.3M), All Recovery (29.1M), Find Your Phone with Clap (21M), Anti Theft Alarm (10.9M), Speaker Cleaner (1.95M, +340k over 7 days), IPTV, AR drawing, and a translator.
- The server IP for 5star-software.com is in Ho Chi Minh City (2ip.io shows 123.30.136.102, Asia/Ho_Chi_Minh). The translator's package name includes the Vietnamese word "trangoai", and the email name hazardphan (Phan is a Vietnamese surname). Conclusion: a Vietnamese utility app factory where one team opens multiple developer accounts and spreads apps across categories (flashlight reminders, clap-to-find-phone, anti-theft alarms, pranks, PDFs...).
- The package naming style is consistent: no com. prefix, keywords stacked as "keyword.keyword.keyword" (pdfgo.pdfreader.allofficedocumentreader, brokenscreenprank.kafebrokenphonescreen.hahabrokenscreen, speakercleaner.watereject.dustremover). That alone is an ASO technique.
- Opening a new "Office Tools Pro" account dedicated to PDF and office categories separates account risk from category risk (inferred).
3. Competitors: an extremely crowded bloodbath
In the library, 225 apps with PDF or Document Reader in the name first launched after 2026-05, and 31 of them each gained ≥100k in 7 days (7.09M combined). Among the top 20 on Thailand's productivity free chart, 8 are PDF or document readers (11-06). Main rivals:
| Competitors | Platform | Launched | Scale (library, 11-06) | How it differs |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Adobe Acrobat Reader | Android/iOS/big-tech | 2010 | 945M installs, +1.51M in 7 days | Brand and real editorial chops, subscription model; this one is just a light reader + ads |
| WPS Office | Android | 2011 | 832M, +2.15M in 7 days | Full office suite. This product is mostly read-only. |
| PDF Reader - Easy PDF(QR Code Scanner./deepthought) | Android | 2022 | 433M, +1.85M in 7 days | The old-school factory doing the same thing, 1000× the scale |
| Document Reader & PDF Editor (same as above) | Android | 2022 | 133M, +1.15M in 7 days | Same thing, ranked #5 in Thailand |
| PDF Reader – PDF Viewer(EZTech Apps) | Android | 2022 | 252M | Same product |
| PDF ProX(Office Suite Pro) | Android | 2025-04 | 33M, +1.25M in 7 days | Same-type newcomer: #1 in the Korea Productivity chart, #3 in Thailand, already bigger |
| Readdock - PDF Tools(Innovate AI) | Android | 2025-06 | 11.4M, +1.02M in 7 days | Same product |
| PDF Reader: View All PDFs(Lumio Tech) | Android | 2025-11 | 21.2M, 7 days +970k | Same product |
| PDF Box (Wah Hub), Reampo, PDF Pilot, ApolloPDF, PDoc and others | Android | 2026-07~10 | 500k–4.25M, 7 days +19~470k | Same period, same playbook, same size |
| Built-in PDF viewer in Google Drive / Files | Big-company features | – | Preinstalled | Free at the system level; this one lives off "open with" and search capture |
This one: 7 days +295k, only about #29 in the PDF category. Not standing out.
4. Growth tactics
- Paid user acquisition (highly likely, not directly confirmed): the curve is "push hard, then taper"; the charting concentrates in cheap-CPI storefronts like Thailand, Turkey, Indonesia, Vietnam and Malaysia; the parent company's site brags about "App Monetization"; other apps from the same factory chart in the same storefronts. Our Google / Meta / TikTok ad libraries have nothing on it (the list was built from the grossing charts and it isn't on it. Not found ≠ not advertised).
- Store search ASO: localized titles in 17 storefronts, all built around the high-volume search term "PDF reader / open PDF"; package name stuffed with keywords. Evidence: chart_rank.title.
- "Open with" capture (category mechanic, inferred): when users receive a PDF or Word file in LINE / WhatsApp / Telegram they need an app that can open it; install once and the system keeps launching it, which gives natural retention and ad impressions.
- Factory reuse: the same team already has experience and monetization SDKs from several tool apps with tens of millions of installs, so they can cross-promote (unconfirmed).
- Content / creators / media: X (x-radar, 60 days), TikTok search and web search found no discussion; the web only has auto-generated pages from AppBrain, Similarweb, Apptopia, LDPlayer and similar sites.
5. Why it took off
- The demand is always there: opening a PDF is a must-have and the search volume is large; Android users in Southeast Asia and Turkey are numerous, don't pay, and accept ads.
- The team has a mature pipeline: the Vietnamese factory has run "standard features + localized ASO + paid acquisition to push small-country charts + ad monetization" more than a dozen times (Flash Alert, Clap to Find Phone, etc., all tens of millions). PDF is just a new category.
- Push charts in cheap storefronts first: the bar for the free Productivity chart in Thailand / Turkey is low; a few tens of thousands of installs a day can get you into the top 10, and organic traffic follows once you're charted.
6. Differentiation
The feature list (reading, scanning, merge/split, image-to-PDF, opening docx/xls/ppt, night mode) is identical to dozens of rivals, even the blurb sentence is a template ("Imagine having an entire office in your pocket"). No product differentiation; it gets traction from the team's distribution, not the product.
7. Visibility and copycats
- Revenue isn't public, no media or big X accounts have written about it, zero discussion on X / TikTok. Almost nobody knows about it yet, but that isn't an opportunity in itself: this category is already packed with factories using the same playbook (225 PDF readers have charted since 2026).
- Copycats: it's hard to say who copied whom. Around the same time, PDF Box (Wah Hub, 2026-07), Reampo (2026-10), PDF Pilot (2026-09), PDoc (2026-09), and PDF Reader Viewer - Tools (HOSENR, 2026-09) and others of the same kind were all pushing charts simultaneously.
8. Takeaways
- The factory playbook of "tool category × multiple accounts × localized ASO × cheap-storefront paid acquisition to push category charts × ad monetization";
- Keyword-stacked package names and per-storefront localized titles;
- Choosing a category that gets "launched by the system" (file-opening) naturally gives reuse and ad impressions.
9. Uncertain
- Channels and spend: not in our ad libraries, unverified;
- ROI: never reached the grossing chart, ad revenue unknown, whether it pays back unknown;
- Why the rating has stayed blank (possibly too few ratings to display);
- Whether the November growth slowdown was a deliberate pullback or worse paid-acquisition efficiency, unknown.
