> Since AI video matured in 2026, a wave of AI BL drama channels popped up on Korean YouTube, but they couldn't make money and were limited by content rules. This one was first to bring those creators in: YouTube drives free traffic, the App sells uncensored and early-access episodes, and BL fans are willing to pay per episode.

# 77k installs, top 20 in Korea's Entertainment Top Grossing: NovelaPlay turns YouTube's AI BL dramas into an "uncut version" business

**What it is** A Korean AI drama app for women: romance, romance fantasy, and BL. Horizontal episodes come from outside AI creators, the first few episodes are free, and the rest are unlocked episode by episode with coins.

**Why it's taking off** After AI video matured in 2026, a wave of AI BL drama channels appeared on YouTube. They couldn't make money and were limited on explicitness. NovelaPlay was the first to sign these creators: YouTube provides free traffic, the app sells uncut and early episodes, and BL fans are willing to pay per episode.

**A** **How you could follow it** Copy the structure in another language: sign the emerging AI women's drama creators on YouTube. They keep posting the standard cut, while your app sells the later episodes and the cut scenes, with per-episode revenue sharing. Track each creator's traffic and payouts with their own invite code.

Grade A: the mechanism is clear, the revenue signal is real (its chart rank is far higher than its install count), few people know about it, and no one has done it outside Korea yet. The bet is whether it can sign enough creators and whether "uncut" can stay within app store rules on explicitness. Chatter in small circles

A Seoul company with 8 people, four months after launch. Its Google Play installs are only 77k, yet it ranks right next to WATCHA, which has 14.6M cumulative installs, on Korea's Play Entertainment Top Grossing. It barely produces dramas itself, and there's no sign of paid acquisition. The shows and viewers come from AI drama creators on YouTube: YouTube runs the "standard version," and the app sells the "uncut extended version" and early episodes. Only small circles know this playbook, and no one has done it in other languages yet.

### A YouTube video description

Nov 5 2026, 9 p.m. (Korean time), the YouTube channel "오드원 ODD:ONE" posted Episode 8 of Season 2 of the AI BL drama 《시한부 황태자가 집착합니다》 ("The Terminally Ill Crown Prince Is Obsessed"), reaching 29k views the next day. The first line of the description isn't about the plot. It's a teaser: "Next week, NovelaPlay releases the uncut extended versions of Episodes 9 and 10." Then two more lines: "Episode 4 (first night) → watch it now on NovelaPlay" and "Episode 5 (bath scene, 🔞 special extended version) → watch it now on NovelaPlay," followed by a download link and one more line: "Enter oddone under 'Me' in the app to get 100 coins."

The same channel posted Season 1 Episode 8 on Jul 30 with a more direct message: "For channel safety, the YouTube version has been re-edited. Want to see the full moments when both leads' hearts race? Go to NovelaPlay." That episode got 163k views and 302 comments (YouTube, 11-06).

NovelaPlay's business model is spelled out in these few lines of description.

### What it is

A women's drama app from Novela Studio (노벨라스튜디오, Gangnam, Seoul) with three genres: romance, romance fantasy (called "로판" in Korean web novel circles), and BL. The first sentence of the Korean store description reads "Turning the fun of web novels and webtoons into TV-quality video," and the second: "Not one-minute shorts, but stories that draw you in." Horizontal format, 5 to 10 minutes per episode, with subtitles in 20 languages.

All the dramas are AI-made, but the platform doesn't produce them itself. The footage comes from outside AI drama creators; a September job posting from the company says the platform has 40+ of them. The first few episodes of each show are free, then unlocked one at a time with coins. In-app purchases range from $4.99 to $99.99 each (Google Play, 11-06).

The Google Play launch date was Jul 10; iOS followed on Jul 23.

### Why now

In the first half of 2026, AI video models finally became able to hold a character's face consistently and generate Korean dialogue directly. A wave of AI BL drama channels appeared on Korean YouTube, racking up millions of views within months. The hit AI BL title 《침향》 reached 7.5M views in 4 month (Carat editorial, 9-17).

These creators have audiences, but making money is hard. YouTube ad revenue share is low; one Korean creator estimated about 2,000 won per 10k views. And the scenes BL and romance viewers most want to see can't stay on YouTube, so they get cut. NovelaPlay launched in July and gave them a paid outlet: the cut material and the episodes not yet released go into the app, split by show.

### Where users come from

**The creators' YouTube channels are the main channel.** The channels confirmed to be driving traffic each have tens of thousands of subscribers, all started in 2026:

| Channel | Subscribers (11-06) | How they drive traffic |
|---|---|---|
| 오드원 ODD:ONE | 21k, 5.97M total views | YouTube runs the re-edited version: "The uncut extended version and early episodes are on NovelaPlay," invite code oddone |
| Secret.Log_BL | 27.7k, 5.02M total views | 《대가》 labels each episode "standard version" and "special extended version now public on NovelaPlay"; 240k views per episode |
| Black Latte | 13.2k | "From Episode 4 onward, exclusive to NovelaPlay" |
| PROFANE FILM | 12.9k | 《사초》 premiered 11-03: "Episode 2 went to NovelaPlay on Nov 9 first, reaching YouTube a day later; from Episode 3 onward, NovelaPlay only," invite code profane |
| VEY Film | — | All of Season 1 of 《그 영애는 울지않는다》 moved to NovelaPlay; Season 2 premiered in the app first and reached YouTube a week later |

The formula is fixed: YouTube and Shorts serve as free trailers, and "next episode," "uncut," and "watch early" lock viewers into the app. Each channel has its own invite code. New users who enter it get 100 coins (about $1, enough for one episode). The invite code also appears to serve as the credential for calculating creators' revenue share (inferred).

**Paid blog reviews.** At least two reviews on Naver from October open by noting they were paid by the company, aimed at female readers of romance fantasy webtoons.

**Channels not seen.** Meta's ad library doesn't return it by name, domain, or package. X shows 90 posts in the last 0 days. No coverage from major Korean media. Installs rose steadily by 700 to 800 per day (Google Play installs, 10-29 through 11-06), and its free-chart rank only hovered around #57 to #68 in Korea's Entertainment category. None of this looks like large-scale paid acquisition.

### Where the money comes from

Users spend a lot individually. The clearest signal is the charts: in Korea's Play Entertainment **Top Grossing** , it has stayed at #19 to #20 since late October, and its overall Top Grossing rank rose from #52 to #45. On the Entertainment **Top Free** chart, though, it hovers around #60 (Google Play charts, 10-27 through 11-06). SOOP, ranked next to it, has 34.6M installs. It also charts in Entertainment Top Grossing in Japan and Taiwan (#126 and #88). The company's job postings say overseas users make up 60% of users and that it "refreshes its highest revenue every week" (company claim, unverified).

Users really do find it expensive. The two most-marked-helpful Google Play reviews both complain about price. One from Sep, marked helpful by 7,41 people: "It's not like you're only watching one show on the platform. 7,500 won, 15,000 won, that's more than a monthly OTT subscription... Just make a monthly pass if you can." Another from Aug, marked helpful by 28,37 people: "The picture quality is really good, but the worst part is that coins are too expensive. You won't just watch one episode... 5 to 10 minutes an episode, you can't finish 10 episodes, and 1,000 coins cost 15,000 won." Later, coins were changed to expire after 14 days and weekly free coins were cut to 80, which brought another round of negative reviews.

Someone asked for a monthly subscription. The official reply: subscriptions require coordinating with each show's creator individually, so it can't be done in the short term. That answer also reveals the structure: pay per show and per episode, with revenue shared with creators.

Despite the complaints about price, the rating is 4.6 (1,126 ratings, 11-06), and it steadily adds 15 to 20 new ratings each day. People still keep paying despite the complaints, which suggests the content isn't available anywhere else.

### Who it's competing with

| Competitors | Scale | How it differs from NovelaPlay |
|---|---|---|
| ReelShort, DramaBox, DramaWave | 150M to 300M installs each | Vertical live-action short dramas with mainstream genres, powered by heavy paid acquisition. No BL, no creator model. |
| Vigloo(SpoonLabs) | 5.78M installs | A Korean domestic short-drama platform. Launched a 20k-dollar total prize AI short-drama contest in September and promises revenue sharing, competing for the same creators. |
| Heavenly(헤븐리) | 620k installs | Mostly licensed live-action BL. It took the Korean exclusive rights to 《침향》, the hit AI BL title. |
| FOD (Fuji TV) | A mainstream Japanese OTT service | Starting October, it became the exclusive Japanese home of the expanded remake of 《침향》. Major players are now competing for top AI BL titles. |
| Anamana | 186k installs, #30 in Korea's Entertainment Top Grossing | Also AI-native drama plus creator incubation and production tools, but vertical and mass-market in topic |

The only one I've found doing AI production + BL/romance fantasy + outside creator supply + paid full versions. Carat's Korean editorial team September compared 4 services and reached the same conclusion.

### What it gets right

Landscape, cinematic: those are the store-page selling points, but they don't pull in viewers. It works because three things stack:

1. **It signed AI BL creators first, before anyone else had claimed them.** The parent company started with the writing tool Novela, which has 10k+ author users. The company also ran a 5-week AI short-drama production course and hired content PDs to recruit creators.

2. **Creators do the acquisition for free.** Their channel descriptions, Shorts, and pinned comments all promote it, and invite codes give creators a reason to push it.

3. **It picked the right audience.** BL and romance-fantasy readers were already trained to pay per chapter by web novels and webtoons, and they have strong binge-watching urges. Mainstream platforms can't show the scenes they want most.

The weaknesses are clear too: creators don't sign exclusives, top IP has already been poached by Heavenly and FOD, Vigloo is competing for creators with contests, and users find it expensive with no subscription.

### If it were you

**My take:** worth following, but don't copy it in Korea. The structure is what's worth stealing: "AI drama creators post a standard cut on YouTube, your app sells uncut and early episodes, revenue split per episode." The same kind of creators are emerging in English, Japanese, Spanish, Thai, and Indonesian, and nobody has signed them yet.

**Who it fits:** small teams that already make or understand women-targeted content (web novels, webtoons, otome, BL); developers who can build a coin-unlock player, handle multilingual subtitles, and run in-app purchases; ideally a team with someone who is themselves an AI drama creator and can supply the first shows from their own work.

**Who it doesn't fit:** people who only want to build tools and don't want to deal with creators (half this business is signing people and reconciling payouts); people who want mass-market CEO-romance shorts (that's ReelShort's paid-acquisition battlefield); people who can't handle content moderation risk. "Uncut" is both the selling point and the risk: Google Play and the App Store have explicit restrictions on sexual content, so the cut has to stay within what the stores allow, and anything more explicit can only go on the web.

**How to do it:** start with one language and one genre (say, romantasy in English or BL in Japanese). On YouTube, list AI drama channels in that niche that launched in the past six months and have a few thousand to tens of thousands of subscribers, then approach each one: keep posting on YouTube, and from episode 3 or 4 onward, the cut scenes go on my platform, with revenue split per episode. Keep the app simple: landscape playback, coin unlocks, one invite code per creator. The pricing complaints NovelaPlay users shout about most can be avoided from day one with a monthly pass or per-title bundles.

**How to get users:** no paid acquisition. Drive traffic through creators' descriptions, Shorts, and pinned comments, with invite codes that unlock episode one for free, which both brings in new users and shows creators the math. Add a few blog reviews that the target audience reads. Entertainment top-grossing charts in smaller languages and high-spend countries have low barriers to entry: NovelaPlay hit Korea's top 20 within 77k installs, which is enough to validate that people will pay.

**When it has to happen:** soon, ideally before the first half of 2027. AI drama creators are still looking for ways to monetize right now. Once well-funded platforms like Vigloo run contests and revenue splits across more languages, or YouTube itself opens paid memberships and full versions for AI dramas, the window closes.

**What would show you're wrong:** ① you approach 20 creators and can't sign 5, which would mean they want YouTube memberships or a big platform's one-time buyout; ② three months after launch, invite-code users pay at a very low rate, which would mean this language's audience isn't willing to pay per episode the way Korean BL fans are; ③ the stores pull or restrict your app over content, which would mean the uncut route doesn't work in app stores and you'd have to move to the web.

Where users come from

- **Verified** **Traffic from partner creators' YouTube channels (free standard cut → app for early episodes and uncut extended versions, with invite codes)** : ODD:ONE (21k subscribers), Secret.Log_BL (27.7k), Black Latte, PROFANE FILM (invite code profane), VEY Film, and others have Play links in their video descriptions, saying "from episode 3 / 4 on NovelaPlay" and "uncut version on NovelaPlay"; per-episode views 80k to 240k (YouTube Data API, 2026-11-06)

## Why NovelaPlay managed to break out

> Google Play `so.novelaplay` / iOS id6781168884 · Developer Novela Studio Co., Ltd. (주식회사 노벨라스튜디오, Seoul) · Research date 2026-11-06

### One line

This is a **paid "full / uncut" platform for Korean women-targeted AI short dramas** : landscape, with romance, romance fantasy (로판), and BL genres. It barely produces any of its own shows. Starting in 2026, a batch of AI BL drama channels appeared on Korean YouTube. NovelaPlay signed them, letting them run free "standard cuts" on YouTube Shorts and main videos, then pulled viewers into the app to pay coins per episode for "early episodes + uncut extended versions." Its users and money are essentially **fans creators brought over from YouTube** . Korean BL fans have a high willingness to pay, so with only 77k installs it squeezed into the #19 spot on Korea's Play entertainment top-grossing chart.

### 1. Data (from our database)

- **Google Play** (googleplay library, 2026-10-29 to 11-06): cumulative installs 70,933 → 77,224,9, up about 6,300 over 700 days, roughly 800 per day; rating count 1,003 → 1,126, steadily adding 15 to 20 reviews per day. The store lists a launch date of 2026-07-10, and the current version 1.0.28,10-26 has been updated.

- **Charts** : on Korea's Play entertainment **top-grossing** chart it stayed between #11 and #19 for 20 days, and on Korea's overall Play top-grossing chart it rose from #52 to #45. On Korea's entertainment top-free chart it ranged from #57 to #68. Taiwan's entertainment top-grossing chart was around #88 to #95, and Japan's around #126 to #145. **Top-grossing ranks are far better than top-free ranks** , meaning few users but high spending.

- **Same-chart comparison:** On the South Korea Google Play Entertainment Top Grossing chart, the apps around it are SOOP (#18, 34.6M installs cumulative), 팬더티비 (#20), and WATCHA (#2.11, B installs). It reached a similar rank with only 77k installs.

- **iOS** (appstore library): listed on 2026-07-23; Korean-store rating count 325(10-28) → 392(11-06), its largest market; Japan 110, Taiwan 64, China 63, Thailand 22. Its best Korean entertainment top-grossing rank was #20, and it's currently #159 on the overall top-grossing chart. AppBrain's best iOS result on record is #21 on Korea's entertainment top-grossing chart.

- **Pricing** : in-app purchases run $4.99 to $99.99 each, unlocking per episode with coins. There are daily check-in coins and weekly free coins, but coins **expire after 14 days** , and the weekly reward has been cut to 80. Users complain a lot in reviews (Play reviews 2026-10-09, 10-15), and some ask for a monthly subscription. The official reply: "Subscriptions require coordinating with each show's creator one by one, not something we can do in the short term." That reply itself shows it works with **creators who split revenue per show** .

- **Company self-reported** (Wanted job listing, 2026-09): overseas users make up 60% of the base; "record revenue refreshed every week"; the platform has 40+ creators; the parent company's writing tool Novela has 10k+ authors. groupby shows the company has 8 people and has raised to Pre-A (Primer, KJN Investment, and a banking-circle young founders' fund).

### 2. Competitors

| Product | Where | Launched | Scale | How it differs from NovelaPlay |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| ReelShort / DramaBox / GoodShort / NetShort / DramaWave | iOS + Android | 2022–2024 | Hundreds of millions of installs (googleplay library: ReelShort 307M, DramaBox 307M, DramaWave 152M) | Mainly vertical live-action shorts with mass-market topics like Western CEO romance and revenge, driven by huge paid acquisition, with either subscriptions or coins. NovelaPlay is landscape, AI-produced, with women-targeted niche topics, and its shows come from creators |
| Vigloo(SpoonLabs) | iOS + Android | 2024-06 | 5.78M installs, Korean entertainment Top Free #17 | A Korean local short-drama platform launched an AI short-drama contest from 2026-09 with a $20K total prize pool and revenue sharing, and more players are crowding into the same direction (mt.co.kr 2026-09-14) |
| Heavenly(헤븐리) | Android | 2021 | 620k installs | Mainly licensed live-action BL (Korean and Thai dramas); it took the Korean exclusive for the hit AI BL 《침향》(Naver blog), making it a direct rival for AI BL rights |
| FOD (Fuji TV) | Japanese OTT | — | big tech | Starting 10-01, exclusively streams the extended remake of 《침향》 in Japan (note.com), showing big companies are also competing for top AI BL IP |
| Anamana | iOS + Android | 2026-06-29(Play) | 186k installs, #30 in Korea's Entertainment Top Grossing | Closest rival: makes "AI-native micro-dramas" and also has creator incubator Anamana 100 and production tool Studio. The difference is that it's vertical and leans toward mass topics (billionaires, alphas, sci-fi) |
| Shortoo(GoodNovel)/ FlickReels / VibeShort / HotDrama | iOS + Android | 2024–2026 | Shortoo 79k, FlickReels 38.6M, VibeShort 19.5M | Big companies mass-producing AI shorts and comic dramas through paid acquisition, with in-house shows or shows from Chinese studios, not relying on creators' own fans |
| Korean short-drama apps such as Shortime / Shortcha | Android | 2024 | Shortime 600k | Also has BL/GL content, but mostly licensed live-action shorts |
| YouTube itself | Big-company features | — | — | Creators' free home base, but ad revenue splits are low (brunch cites about ₩2,000 per 10k views); NovelaPlay pays out through paid full episodes, which YouTube doesn't offer |

Verdict: we found no second platform that is AI-produced, BL/romance-fantasy, horizontal full-length series, and sourced from outside creators. The Carat editorial team 2026-09-17 compared 4 services and wrote that it is "the only Korean service that lists both AI production and BL as categories."

### 3. Where users came from (growth tactics)

1. **Creator YouTube channel funnel (main channel, confirmed)** . The YouTube Data API turned up a batch of Korean AI BL channels partnered with it, all launched within the last 2026 years:
    - ODD:ONE (21k subscribers, 5.97M total views), series 《시한부 황태자가 집착합니다》. The channel bio reads "ODDONE YOUTUBE X NOVELAPLAY: early episodes and the uncut extended version on NovelaPlay," with a direct Play link. Single episodes get 78k to 160k views; the full season 2 premiered on NovelaPlay.
    - Secret.Log_BL (27.7k subscribers, 5.02M views), series 《대가》. The regular cut goes on YouTube, and the "special extended version is public on NovelaPlay"; single episodes get 240k views. The Japanese version is funneled the same way on TikTok.
    - Black Latte (13.2k subscribers) says "exclusive on NovelaPlay from episode 4"; PROFANE FILM (12.9k subscribers) says "continues on NovelaPlay from episode 3" and includes an **invite code: profane** , which looks like creator-attributed revenue sharing; VEY Film announced the full season of 《그 영애는 울지않는다》 on NovelaPlay; Fiction Archive posted the OST for "Novela Play Extended Version."
    - The pattern is fixed: post the first few episodes or a trimmed cut for free, use Shorts clips to pull traffic, and lock "next episode, uncut, early access" inside the app. In short: **YouTube is the free trailer, the App takes the money** .

2. **Paid Naver blog reviews (confirmed)** : at least two Naver reviews (qhfka258, drama-tic, 2026-10) open by saying the writer was paid by the company, targeting women who read romance-fantasy webtoons.

3. **Recruiting on the creator supply side (confirmed)** : the website has a "Become a Creator" page ("publish your work, reach global audiences, earn income"), and it ran a 5-week AI short drama production class (novelaplay.app/class/ai-drama.html, now redirects to the homepage). It is also hiring an AI short drama content PD on job sites to scout and sign creators.

4. **Writer base from the parent company's writing tool (company-stated, partly confirmed)** : the Novela writing tool has 10k+ writer users, and both X and Instagram posted that "Novela is taking a new step to help writers bring their stories to more readers." Early scripts and creators likely came from here.

5. **Paid acquisition (unconfirmed)** : nothing found in the Meta ad library by name, domain, or package; the TikTok Europe ad library doesn't match either (it only entered our watchlist starting 11-02). Search results showed a google.com/goto onelink landing ("Watch free [novelaplay.onelink.me/0ysq/](https://novelaplay.onelink.me/0ysq/)..."), which looks like a Google campaign or tracked link, but it is unverified. Steady daily growth and mid-level free chart ranks suggest large-scale paid buying is not evident.

6. **X / Reddit / media** : x-radar shows 0 posts each for "novelaplay" and "노벨라플레이" over the last 90 days; Reddit has only sporadic recommendations in r/Vertical_Dramas (one person noted "the YT version isn't that spicy, NovelaPlay has an extended cut"); no Korean mainstream outlet covering it specifically was found.

### 4. Why it took off

- **Timing** : in the first half of 2026, AI video models (Seedance, Kling, Wan, and others) could hold a character's face consistent and generate Korean dialogue directly. A batch of AI BL drama channels suddenly appeared on Korean YouTube, racking up millions of views within months (Carat: 《침향》 hit 7.5M views in 4 months). These channels could only live on YouTube's low ad splits and couldn't show explicit scenes. NovelaPlay launched right at 2026-07 (a creator post says service started Jul 20 and supports 11 languages), catching these creators' "paid exit."

- **Supply is there, and acquisition is nearly free** : the series and the audience both come with the creators. The platform uses revenue splits and invite codes to turn creators' YouTube channels into its own free distribution channel, without spending on user acquisition the way ReelShort does.

- **A niche with high willingness to pay** : BL and romance-fantasy fans already pay per chapter (web novels, webtoons), and the anxiety about waiting for the next update is strong. "Next episode / uncut" is only available here, and each user spends a lot, so 77k installs were enough to reach the top 20 of Korea's Entertainment Top Grossing chart.

- **A global foundation** : 20+ subtitle languages and 60% overseas users, which is why it also appears on the Japan and Taiwan top-grossing charts.

### 5. Differentiation, and whether that's why it broke out

- At the product level, the difference is **horizontal, cinematic, full-length series** (benchmarking streaming, not one-minute vertical shorts), plus **women-only genres** (romance, romance-fantasy, BL), plus **all AI-produced, with content sourced from outside creators** .

- The difference that actually matters is **the revenue-share-plus-traffic structure between the platform and creators** : the series runs free on YouTube to drive traffic, while the App only sells "extended cuts, uncut, early access." Horizontal framing alone doesn't pull users (there are reviews complaining about the price). It worked because it signed up AI BL creators first, right when they emerged and before anyone else claimed them. So the answer: differentiation is part of the reason, but what made it work is the "creator supply + paid full episodes" model, not the aspect ratio.

- The advantage is fragile: creators aren't exclusive. 《침향》 was picked up by Heavenly and FOD, and Vigloo is already competing for creators with contests plus revenue sharing.

### 6. How many people have seen it

It's spreading in small circles. Revenue isn't public; there's no TrustMRR record, no mainstream media coverage, and 0 posts on X. Exposure mostly comes from partner creators' YouTube bios, paid Naver blogs, and one Carat AI BL guide. The people who really know this model are the Korean AI short drama creator community and Korean short drama platforms (Vigloo, Heavenly). No one was seen copying it one-for-one, but others are already crowding into the same space.

### 7. What others can learn

- "Free on YouTube or Shorts, the App sells full cuts, uncut versions, and early access": turn creators' channels into a zero-cost acquisition channel, use invite codes for attribution, and share revenue with creators.

- Pick the niche with **the highest willingness to pay, restricted on mainstream platforms, and with supply just unlocked by AI** (BL, romance-fantasy), rather than competing with ReelShort on mass-market paid acquisition.

- Upstream, cultivate a pool of creators first (writing tool users, production classes, PDs helping incubate), and the platform keeps getting exclusive new series.

- A small country with high-ARPU top-grossing charts (Korean entertainment) has a low bar: under 100k installs is enough to chart, which is good for validating that people will pay.

### 8. Still unclear

- Actual revenue and split ratios are not public. The "weekly highest revenue refresh" is the company's own claim in a job posting.

- Whether there is paid acquisition (Meta and TikTok Europe libraries came up empty; the Google campaign is unverified).

- Negative reviews over coin expiry after 14 days and weekly reward cuts: will they hurt retention? With no subscription, do heavy users churn?

- Whether creator deals are exclusive and how long they last; the risk of top IP being poached by FOD and Heavenly.

- How "60% overseas users" is defined; the gap between the store launch dates 07-10 (Play) and 07-23 (iOS) may come from metadata changes or storefront expansion.
