# Turn "check balance" into "expense receipts": an Indonesian engineer's e-toll tool goes from 1,000 to 16,000 installs in a week

**What it is** Tap an e-money / e-toll card to your phone to see the balance and transaction history, and export toll and parking expense reports with QR codes in one tap.

**Why it took off** The founder's self-filmed video of tapping a card on an iPhone lock screen went viral (1.26M views). In late October he reframed both the product and the videos around "lost the receipt, so you have to pay out of pocket," and Android went from about 1,100 to 16k installs in a week.

**C** **How to follow it** Don't copy it head-on in Indonesia. Take the "free tool that turns into a receipt for finance" approach to other countries with stored-value transit cards, or build a bulk version for fleets and finance teams in Indonesia, with the founder filming pain-point videos to get customers.

Grade C: revenue is only a few thousand dollars a month, the features are easy to copy, it already holds search position #1 in the Indonesian market, and the founder brings his own traffic. What's worth learning is scenario-based pricing and on-camera acquisition; following into this market isn't worth it. Chatter in the niche

Indonesia has a dozen or so free e-money balance-check apps. The established ones have over a million installs each and survive on ads. CekSaldo is one of them. Founder Robi Hamanto built it alone, and the features aren't new. It stands out in two ways: the founder films the videos himself, and in late October he shifted the pitch from "see how much is left on your card" to "monthly toll receipts you can hand to finance." Afterward it reached #21 in the Indonesian utilities Top Grossing chart. Below: how it got started, how much money it makes, and whether you can follow.

### A lock-screen card-tap video

In 2026 August 24, Robi posted a TikTok video titled "Ini video tutorial CekSaldo di iPhone" (CekSaldo tutorial on iPhone). With the iPhone locked, he taps a Mandiri e-Money card to the phone, and the phone pops up and reads out the balance by itself. It uses the NFC automation in iOS Shortcuts, with his app doing the card reading. By 11-06 the video had 1.26M views and 37k likes (TikTok, 11-06). The top comment (810 likes) reads "isn't iPhone supposed to scan from the front??", followed by a string of people asking "how do I find scan card" and "do I need to install the cek saldo app first."

In Indonesia, using an Android phone to check card balances by tapping the card has been around for years, and reviews even say "Android could do this 2024 years ago". Few third-party tools could read these cards on iPhone. He later summed it up on Instagram himself: "One video. 2.1 million views… That video helped more people discover my app" (2.1M views). In Oct 6 he posted another one, "iPhone user only 😎", at 610k views.

### What it is

An NFC card reader: tap a card to your phone and it reads the balance and stored transaction history of 7 Indonesian stored-value cards (Mandiri e-Money, BCA Flazz, BRI Brizzi, BNI TapCash, KMT, JakCard, MegaCash). No account signup, no bank login. Balance checks are free forever.

The money comes from the other half. The homepage headline now reads "Rekap reimburse berjam-jam? Sekarang kurang dari semenit" (Reimbursement reconciliation taking hours? Now under a minute). The example is a truck's toll receipt: date, toll gate, amount, total, with each row allowing notes and on-site photos. Each PDF page carries a QR code so finance can verify it without installing the app. It can also pull electronic receipts in bulk from the public receipt pages of 8 toll road operators (Jasa Marga's Travoy, AstraTol and others) and attach them to the report.

Pricing (official site, 11-06):

| Tier | Pricing | About |
|---|---|---|
| Free | Unlimited balance checks, last 5 transactions per card, save 2 cards | — |
| Premium+ weekly | Rp5,000 | $0.3 |
| Monthly / yearly | Rp9,900 / Rp59,000 | $0.6 / $3.6 |
| One-time purchase | Rp149,000 | $9 |

### Why October's peak

The August video wave mostly brought iPhone users. The Android version stayed lukewarm: about 160 installs cumulative in early September, and about 1,100 installs in October 25 (Google Play install counts, third-party estimates).

Two things happened in late October. First, over versions 1.0.20 through 1.0.22 the app kept adding carrier receipts, attachments, and day-grouped PDFs (per the App Store release notes), and the official site was rewritten to talk about expense reports. Second, Robi ran a flood of reimbursement-themed short videos on Facebook and TikTok: one with 10-26 got 61K views, and "Cetak mutasi e-money gapernah semudah ini sebelumnya" (printing e-money statements has never been this easy) got 10-30K views... 57 The hooks all hit the pain of office workers paying out of pocket. One of them, 11-02, goes: "Lost the receipt in the queue. Finance wants the proof at month-end. Now what? Paying out of pocket 😭 Turns out every transaction is still on the chip in the card."

The same week, Android went from about 1,100 to 16k installs, and 11-05 cumulative reached 24,384 (Google Play, 11-05). That week averaged over two thousand installs a day, up from under a hundred before. One caveat: Play's counter updates in jumps. On 10-30 it jumped 14.8k in one day, and there's no way to tell how much of that was batched refresh, so weekly totals are more reliable than single days. After 11-04 daily installs fell back to a few hundred. This wave was most likely a one-off spike from the videos, not sustained growth.

Chart (Indonesia store): Google Play Utilities Top Free, ranked #39 on 10-29, dropped off the chart a few days later; Utilities Top Grossing, #21 from 10-31 to 11-02, #35 on 11-06. On iOS, 10-28 charted overall (Top Free #117, Top Grossing #178), and #7 on the Utilities Top Grossing chart. It's only listed in Indonesia.

Search "cek saldo e-toll" in the store and it ranks #1 (Google Play Indonesia, 11-06). The name is the search term people type, and the iOS version's name changed from "e-Money & Flazz" to "e-Toll & e-Money". The traffic from the videos was caught by search.

Whether they bought ads during the surge week can't be checked from outside, so it can't be ruled out.

### What users are saying

The iOS Indonesia store has 34 ratings, averaging 4.7 (App Store, 11-06). A few representative ones:

- "Please add an option to uncheck transactions I don't want to print, because not every one is reimbursable, like top-ups. And a subtotal for the part being printed." (10-28,5 stars)

- "When exporting PDF there's no Jasa Marga logo, it just says ceksaldo everywhere." (10-30,3 stars). Finance accepts the operator's stamp, not a third-party app's name.

- "The Bali toll roads don't seem to be recorded yet." (10-29,5 stars)

- "Paid app, the free version only shows 5 transactions. Going to BCA directly shows 10." (10-06,1 stars)

The Google Play review quoted on the official site says the same thing: "Lets me make a reimbursement report for the company, with data. Sometimes I forget to keep the parking or e-toll receipts." Users are using it as a reimbursement tool, and the requests they make are all about reimbursement.

### How much money

Not much. Third-party estimates put Google Play in-app revenue from 10-02 to 11-01 below $5,000 (AppGazers). The official site claims "84,000+ monthly active users and 2,200+ people on Premium+" (as of 10-27), but at that time Play had just over a thousand cumulative installs and iOS had about twenty ratings, so the figure doesn't match public data and should be read as marketing. Even if 2,200 paying users is real, most bought the $0.6 monthly or the $9 one-time purchase, so cumulative revenue is a few thousand to maybe $10–20K (estimate).

For a tool built by one person, that's a decent income, but not a big business.

### Who it's competing with

Checking your balance has no barrier to entry:

| Product | Scale | How it differs from CekSaldo |
|---|---|---|
| SaldoKu(Genibiru Studio) | Android 1M+ installs | Ad-driven, balance check only |
| Ceksaldo: Semua Kartu Tol/KRL(Mr. Habibi) | Android 1M+ installs | Nearly the same name, ad-driven |
| eSaldo Info(Xor Pointer) | 18k reviews, has in-app purchases | Also has statements and receipts, the closest rival |
| eChis + eChisLe(Medicom Studio) | eChis 230k installs | Receipts as a separate app, in-app purchases $0.49–0.99 |
| Cek saldo emoney(iOS,2026-08) | 729 ratings | Launched around the same time, 20x its rating, balance check only |
| Cetak Resi Transaksi E-Toll(iOS,2026-03) | 332 ratings | Prints e-toll receipts on iOS, earlier than CekSaldo |
| Bank and operator apps (Livin' by Mandiri, BRImo, Travoy, etc.) | Hundreds of millions of users | Require login, one app only supports one card or one toll road |

eChisLe and Cetak Resi were already doing receipts. CekSaldo leads in two places: packaging (the whole product is designed around "handing it to finance", with QR verification, aggregating 8 operators at once), and the founder being able to make videos that reach hundreds of thousands of views. Anyone can copy both, but neither is quick to copy.

### If it were you

**Judgment (C): there are lessons to learn, but following directly isn't worth it.** In Indonesia it already ranks #1 in search and the founder brings his own traffic, earning a few thousand dollars a month; the features are easy for anyone to build, and a newcomer couldn't keep up on distribution. What's worth taking is the approach, not this market.

**Who it's for:** someone living in a country with stored-value transit cards or ETC cards, where the company requires receipts for reimbursement, who can write native NFC card reading and is willing to appear on camera.

**Who it's not for:** anyone wanting to compete head-on in Indonesia (it already holds the search slots, content and word of mouth); anyone who only writes code and won't show their face (the established tools survive on ads, and without distribution you'd become the twelfth balance-check tool); anyone wanting big revenue (price points are $0.3–9, the ceiling is very low).

**How to do it:** don't copy "balance checking", copy "turning a free tool into proof you hand to someone else". Two routes:

1. Change countries. First find places where the card's transactions can be read by phone but finance still wants paper receipts, and verify each one: Malaysia's Touch 'n Go card, Thailand's Rabbit, the Philippines' Beep, Vietnam's ETC. Japan's Suica reading and transit expense apps already exist in large numbers, so skip it.

2. In Indonesia, build the B2B side it hasn't done well: a bulk version for logistics fleets and sales teams' GA / finance departments, with multiple drivers, multiple cards, and monthly summaries. Its official site just added a WhatsApp contact, but I haven't seen any signed clients yet. The users' request to "check the reimbursable items and only print the operator's original" is already a ready-made requirements list.

**How to acquire users:** follow its playbook: the founder on camera, one video with a flashy, instantly understandable hook like "lock the screen, tap the card, and it reads the balance aloud", another a short skit about the pain of "lost the receipt, so you pay out of pocket"; first dominate a platform with less competition (for it, iPhone), then carry the content over to another platform; name the app with the words locals actually search for.

**When to move:** this isn't a window-chasing business. If you do it, first spend two weeks verifying whether the target country's cards can be read for transaction history and whether companies accept electronic receipts for reimbursement, then decide.

**What would show this read was wrong:** ① CekSaldo's Android daily installs climbed back to over a thousand a day after mid-November and it held a top-30 spot on the tools Top Grossing chart, which would mean reimbursement demand is bigger than it looks, and the B2B bulk version in Indonesia is worth a serious look; ② it publishes enterprise or team pricing, in which case it would take the B2B route itself first; ③ operators like Jasa Marga launch cross-operator reimbursement export inside their own apps, and then the paid angle for this category disappears.

A last line for tool builders: a free tool that's been done to death, moved into a scenario where "someone else has to see it", gets paid not for its features but for "one less expense to chase at month's end".

## CekSaldo: e-Toll & e-Money (tech.robihamanto.ceksaldo.android), why it broke out

> Channel: Google Play (iOS version id6800284313) | Developer: PT Hamanto Studio Aja (Robihamanto's personal studio) | Research date: 2026-11-06

### One line

It's a tool that uses NFC to read the balance and transaction history of 7 Indonesian stored-value cards (Mandiri e-Money, BCA Flazz, BRI Brizzi, BNI TapCash, KMT, JakCard, MegaCash). The category itself is crowded (several older products on Android have 1M+ installs), and it took off because of two things: first, the founder acquired users through his own short videos, starting with a TikTok on iPhone that hit 1.26M views; second, in late October it shifted the pitch from "checking balance" to "e-toll / parking transaction reports for company reimbursement" (PDFs with QR verification, aggregating electronic receipts from 8 toll road operators), paired with weekly reimbursement-themed FB / TikTok videos. Android then went from about 1 thousand installs a week to 16k. The differentiation is real, but the timeframe is too short to tell whether it can retain users or build a moat.

### 1. Data: how it grew

**Android install curve** (googleplay library `app_day_ext`, AppstoreSpy estimates; daily increments between two observations are averaged):

| Observation date | Total installs | Average daily new installs during |
|---|---|---|
| 2026-09-06 | 162 | ~19 |
| 2026-09-27 | 205 | 2–3 |
| 2026-10-11 | 364 | 7–15 |
| 2026-10-18 | 468 | ~15 |
| 2026-10-25 | 1,144 | ~97 |
| 2026-11-01 | 16,121 | **~2,140** |
| 2026-11-02 | 21,159 | ~5,038 |
| 2026-11-03 | 23,519 | ~2,360 |
| 2026-11-05 | 24,384 | ~432 |

- In our own `app_day` data, from 10-29 to 10-30 one day shows +14,768 (1,353 → 16,121). This is most likely the Play counter refreshing in batches, not that many installs in a single day; the weekly total from 10-26~11-02 is more reliable. 7 days of new installs total 8,263 (data card). After 11-04 the daily rate dropped to a few hundred, **growth is clearly slowing** .

- The Play listing's release date 2026-10-15 was reset; AppstoreSpy was already tracking it by late August (8-31, about 160 installs), so the real launch is no later than late 2026-08.

- **Charts** (googleplay `chart_rank`, Indonesia store): TOOLS Top Free 10-29 #39 → 11-01 #153, then dropped off the chart; TOOLS Top Grossing 10-29 #29 → 10-31~11-02 #21 → 11-06 #35. Only listed in Indonesia (n_countries_now=1).

- **iOS** (appstore library `app_day`, Indonesia store): 10-28 entered the **overall chart** , Top Free #117, Top Grossing #178; category (Utilities) Top Grossing 10-28 #7 → 11-06 #25. Ratings 21 (10-28) → 34 (11-06). It ranks better on monetization on iOS than on Android.

- **Revenue** : AppGazers estimates Google Play in-app revenue from 10-02 to 11-01 at under $5K (80% interval). The website claims "84,000+ monthly active users, 2,200+ Premium+ users" (as of 2026-10-27, [ceksaldo.app/](https://ceksaldo.app/)). But at that time Play had only about a thousand-plus cumulative installs and iOS had 21 ratings, so **the 84k MAU figure doesn't match public data; treat it as marketing copy** . Pricing: Premium+ Rp5,000 weekly / Rp9,900 monthly / Rp59,000 yearly / Rp149,000 one-time (about $0.3 / $0.6 / $3.6 / $9). Balance checks are free forever. Assuming 2,200 paying users, mostly one-time or monthly purchases, cumulative revenue is roughly in the several-thousand-dollar range (unverified).

### 2. Competitors: who else does the same thing

The balance-checker category was already saturated. Searching "cek saldo e-toll" in the Indonesian Play Store returns a dozen-plus similar apps (Play search page, 2026-11-06, scraped via Jina). **CekSaldo ranked #1 that day** .

| Product | Platform | Launched | Scale | How it differs from CekSaldo |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| SaldoKu: Saldo e-money & Flazz(Genibiru Studio) | Android | Years ago | 1M+ installs, 44k reviews | Long-running balance checker, monetized with ads; no reimbursement reports |
| eSaldo Info(Xor Pointer) | Android | Years ago | 18.1k reviews, has in-app purchases | Balance check + transaction history, with a receipt feature called "Cek & Struk Tol"; the closest competitor |
| Ceksaldo: Semua Kartu Tol/KRL(Mr. Habibi) | Android | Years ago | 1M+ installs, 2,180 reviews | **Nearly identical name** ; ad-monetized, balance check only |
| Cek Saldo E-Money Flazz E-Toll(Edira Studio) | Android | Years ago | 100K+ installs, 4,340 reviews | Ad-monetized |
| eChis Electronic money info + eChisLe e-toll receipts (Medicom Studio) | Android | 2021-07 | eChis 234,135 installs, 11,998 rating (googleplay library), TOOLS Top Grossing (Indonesia) #188 | Already has a dedicated e-toll receipt app with IAPs of only $0.49–0.99; CekSaldo bundles receipts, reports, and multi-card management into one subscription |
| Cek Saldo Semua Kartu (Karmel Studio), Satset, Sikabu, Istimewa, and others | Android | Varies | 5K–100K+ | Undifferentiated ad-supported balance checkers |
| Cek saldo emoney(Hendri Budi Setiawan) | iOS | 2026-08-17 | 729 rating (appstore library, Indonesia) | A new iOS release from the same period with 20 times CekSaldo's rating count; balance check only |
| Cetak Resi Transaksi E-Toll(Johar Susanto) | iOS | 2026-03-10 | 332 rating | iOS e-toll receipt printing, nearly the same concept, and it came earlier |
| Emoney Info: NFC Card Reader | iOS | 2026-04-19 | 13 rating | Balance check only |
| Issuing banks' own apps: Livin' by Mandiri, BRImo, BCA mobile / Flazz, BNI TapCash Go; e-wallets LinkAja, Tokopedia, Shopee | Big-company features | — | Hundreds of millions of users | Can check balances and top up cards, but requires bank login, and each app supports only one card type |
| Travoy (Jasa Marga) "Resi Digital", the AstraTol website, NITA | Big-company features | Early on | Jasa Marga official | Only outputs receipts for its own toll roads; CekSaldo's selling point is pulling public receipt pages from 8 operators in one place |

Verdict: **balance checking has no differentiation** . The real differentiator is turning multi-card, multi-operator transactions into reimbursement reports that go straight to finance, and eChisLe, eSaldo, and iOS's Cetak Resi already have early versions of this.

### 3. Growth: where users came from

1. **The founder films short videos himself (confirmed, the main driver)**
    - TikTok @robihamanto (2,187 followers) pins two videos: 2026-08-24 "Ini video tutorial CekSaldo di iPhone" **1.26M views, 36.9k likes** ; 2026-10-06 "iPhone user only 😎" **610k views** (TikHub scrape, 2026-11-06).
    - He posted on Instagram himself: "One video. 2.1 million views… That video helped more people discover my app" (https://www.instagram.com/reel/DfKvcEXSBvP/), admitting that acquisition mainly came from one viral video, and he runs "engineer making organic content" as his personal IP.
    - Facebook "Robihamanto" (3,100 followers) Reels: 10-26 one video with 61.2k views; 10-30 "Cetak mutasi e-money gapernah semudah ini sebelumnya" 57k views; and another with 58.1k views (https://www.facebook.com/robihamanto/videos/1118822277171892/). **These posting dates fall in the same week Android surged (10-26~11-01)** , and all the content is about "reimbursement / printing transaction history."
    - The brand account TikTok @ceksaldo.app has only 261 followers, 15 videos, and a few hundred views each, so it has barely done anything. The video copy uses lines like "Nombok terus kalo ga ada bukti 😭" (always paying out of pocket without proof) and "lost the receipt in line," targeting the pain of office workers covering costs themselves.

2. **Store search (confirmed ranking #1, but no traffic data)** : In the Indonesian Play Store, "cek saldo e-toll" ranks #1. The name directly uses the terms people search for, "CekSaldo / e-Toll / e-Money"; since October the title has been changed several times (the iOS name went from "CekSaldo: e-Money & Flazz" to "CekSaldo: e-Toll & e-Money"), a classic ASO approach.

3. **iOS timing** : Few third-party card-checking tools were usable by iPhone users; most competitors only made Android apps, and new iOS entries had only appeared in the last 2026 years. It first gained traction by offering "card balance checks on iPhone too, plus one-tap NFC automation via Shortcuts," then carried the reputation and content built on iOS over to Android.

4. **Paid ads** : Our Meta ad library (metaads) has no landing domain or package name for it. That library only tracks listed advertisers, so **not finding it doesn't mean it didn't spend** . Whether it bought traffic during the surge week is unverified.

5. **B2B leads** : The website has a WhatsApp entry for "GA / finance team use" and is still collecting demand; no signed enterprise customers have been seen.

### 4. Why it charted (ranked by strength of evidence)

1. **The founder's short video went viral** : an iPhone tutorial with 1.26M TikTok views and 610k plays put an obscure tool in front of iPhone users, and the founder admits that was the key.

2. **Repositioning from balance checking to reimbursement receipts** : Late-October v1.0.20~1.0.22 release notes all talk about carrier receipts, attachments, and PDFs, and the homepage was rewritten entirely around "reimbursement." This turned a free tool into something office workers were willing to pay Rp5,000 a week for, which is how it squeezed into TOOLS Top Grossing, while older rivals mostly relied on ads.

3. **The reimbursement-themed videos line up in time with the Android surge** : FB / TikTok reimbursement videos were published densely during 10-25~10-30, and Android averaged about 2,140 installs a day that week (previously about 97).

4. **Store search reached #1** , capturing brand and category searches generated by the videos.

5. **Low payment barrier** : Balance checks are free forever, and the paywall sits at "full transaction history + export," which fits Indonesians' acceptance of small subscriptions (weekly Rp5,000).

### 5. Differentiation, and whether that's why it took off

- Compared with older Android tools: no ads, local storage, no login; multi-card management (naming cards, e.g. "company car"); public receipts from 8 toll-road operators checked in one place; PDFs with QR verification codes, photo and carrier receipt attachments, and CSV export; plus design elements like streak tracking and community features that drive retention.

- **The "reimbursement report" is why it can charge money** , and it's the content hook behind the late-October growth wave. But looking only at installs, the earliest surge in August came from "works on iPhone too" plus a viral video, and had nothing to do with reimbursement.

- This differentiation is easy to copy: Medicom's eChisLe and iOS's Cetak Resi Transaksi E-Toll already do receipts. CekSaldo's lead is in packaging (the reimbursement/finance narrative, QR verification) and the founder's own distribution ability, not in technology.

### 6. How many people have seen it

- Revenue is not public; the only figure is the self-reported "2,200+ Premium+" on the website. Nothing turned up on TrustMRR or X (an x-radar search for "ceksaldo" returned 60 posts in 0 days); no media has covered it, and Indonesian media articles about "apps that check e-toll balances" don't mention it.

- The founder talks on IG / FB / YouTube about "in the AI era anyone can build a product; the hard part is selling it," using this app as a case study. It has some spread within Indonesian developer circles but hasn't broken out.

- Verdict: **it's circulating in small circles** .

### 7. Copycats

- No clear copycat has been spotted. On iOS, Hendri Budi Setiawan's "Cek saldo emoney" (2026-08-17) launched nearly simultaneously, and it's unclear who was first. The Android app "Cek Saldo Kita" (com.saldokita.app, 500+ installs) also mentions receipts in its description, but its launch date wasn't checked. Both are only suspected.

### 8. What others can learn

- **Turning a saturated free tool into a credential you can hand to someone in a specific scenario** (here, a reimbursement form for finance): the paywall shifts from features to "I pay less out of pocket."

- The card and receipt NFC approach can be copied to transit and ETC cards in other countries (Japan IC cards, Taiwan's EasyCard, Malaysia's Touch 'n Go, Thailand's Rabbit, etc.), with reimbursement export and QR-stamped PDFs.

- The founder appears on camera making "tutorial + pain-point skits," hitting it first on a platform with fewer competitors like iOS and then bringing it to Android; the name uses the search terms directly, earning #1 in store search.

### 9. Still unclear

- Whether the surge week included paid acquisition (Meta / Google UAC) can't be determined from our ad library.

- How much of the Play jump to 10-30 came from count refreshes versus real downloads.

- The website's 84k MAU and 2,200+ paid figures are self-reported and don't match public data. Real revenue and retention are unknown; Play has no rating data yet (ratings are empty in the library).

- After 11-04, daily installs fell to a few hundred, so this wave may be just a video-driven pulse rather than sustained growth.
