A month after the official app vanished, an impostor "ten ten" hit 60K installs on Google Play
What it is An Android walkie-talkie app posing as ten ten: PIN-based friend adding, hold-to-talk, audio that plays even when the other person's screen is locked. Built by Indian outsourcing firm Softsove.
Why it took off The official Android version was pulled, leaving a brand search with 14M installs' worth of demand unanswered. Android users told by friends to "download ten ten" only find this one on Play.
CHow you could follow Don't copy this name (the term is taken and the trademark risk is high). The better move is to pick your own name and build a "walkie-talkie for close friends" app that works on both Android and iOS, catching the users who need to move after the official app stopped updating, and learn from its habit of watching for "hot apps disappearing from a store" signals.

The walkie-talkie app ten ten, which French teens were obsessed with, vanished from Google Play this August. In September 1, an app copying its name, slogan and features went live. It ranks first when you search "ten ten" on Play and got 61K installs in two months. It didn't build a better product than the official one. It just grabbed the spot the official app left empty. Below: how it did that, how long it can last, and what in this playbook is worth learning and what is best avoided.
An Android user whose friends invited them, but who couldn't find the app
In April 2024, someone posted in the Google Play help community: "There's a walkie-talkie app called tenten that all my friends have, but my phone says 'not compatible with your device.' Can you help?" At the time the official ten ten was booming in France: press and hold a friend's avatar to talk, and the voice plays straight out of their phone, even with their screen locked. In 2024 5, June, it topped both the App Store and Play charts in France. Le Figaro, Le Parisien and TechCrunch all covered it, and some schools issued notices banning it.
Two years on, "all my friends have it, I can't install it" has gotten worse. The AppBrain page for the official Android version now reads: "ten ten is no longer on Google Play. It was there for 2 years, until August 2026," with 14M total installs before it was pulled. The official site tenten.app no longer loads. The iOS version is still downloadable, but its last update was in June 2025 18. An October 14 Japanese write-up also says the Play page showed "not found," and the author found no shutdown notice.
But there are still people on the iPhone side: in early November, the official App Store listing in France still had 154K ratings and ranked #92 in its category. So people still tell their friends "get ten ten, let's talk." Android users who search "ten ten" on Play today get this app first.
What it is
On the store it's called "Ten Ten — Your Circle, On Tap"; the official iOS app is "ten ten - your friends, on tap." The features are the same: sign up with email, send your PIN to friends to add them; hold an avatar to talk, swipe up to lock into hands-free mode; new messages wake the other person's phone; you can switch to video mid-conversation; plus a "poke" feature. The French store page has a full French description that opens with "Pas de fil d'actualité. Pas d'inconnus." (No feed. No strangers.), a line lifted from the official app. It also built a website, tentenly.com, using the official app's copy: "For friends, not feeds," "Hold to talk," plus "Android is live."
Who's behind it is written on the store page. The publisher account is named "All Reels Downloader, Video Saver And Downloader," and the same account also lists several Reels downloaders and a ringtone downloader. The developer website points to my-instants.com, matching another name-riding app from the same group, "MyInstants: Meme Soundboard": listed in April, 206K installs, riding on the well-known sound-effects site myinstants.com. The last line of the French description is "Développé par Softsove," and the privacy email is also at softsove.com. SOFTSOVE is an outsourcing software company in Anand, Gujarat, India.
The app has ads. The store lists in-app purchases at $0.19–84.99 each, but the description never mentions any paid feature. What it sells, and whether it has collected any money, can't be seen from outside.
The numbers: 60K in two months, rising in waves
| Date | Total installs | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| 09-01 | Launched | |
| 09-20 | About 2,900 | Third-party estimate |
| 10-04 | About 17k | Estimated, about +6,700 per day |
| 10-15 | About 30k | estimated |
| 10-29 | 45,190 | Google Play |
| 11-06 | 61,306 | Google Play, last 7 days +16,116 |
The growth came in waves. In October, a few days brought thousands of installs a day, while the days in between only had tens to hundreds. It may be paid ads, or someone at the official app may have been pushing it in bulk; not verified. The first week of November averaged about 2,300 installs per day.
Rankings are sliding. In the French communication free chart it dropped from #139 on 10-29 to #198 on 11-06; in Italy it sat between #153 and #198; from Nov 2 it ranked #120–170 in India, and it never made the overall chart. The volume and the team's location in India match up, so it may have bought cheap installs locally; inferred.
488 ratings, averaging 4.0–4.2, but the distribution is odd: 1-star and 4-star ratings come in at the same steady rate as 0,2-star and 3-star ones, day after day. That doesn't look like organic user ratings; unverified whether they were bought.
Why it took off
In one line: the official app disappeared from Play, and it filled the gap, so users come searching for it themselves.
- Timing: the official app was pulled in August, and this one went live in September 1, less than a month later. The brand demand left behind by 14M installs had no one serving it on Play.
- Almost free acquisition: users were brought in by friends and already wanted ten ten before they installed. Searching the brand name, the name, icon and description all match, so they install. The countries where it charted (France, Italy, Spain, the UAE) are exactly where the official app had many users.
- Copied wholesale: name, slogan, PIN-based friend adding, lock-screen wake-up, French description, website. A teenage user can't tell real from fake. Download sites like CNET Download, AppBrain and Softonic all list it too, so some web traffic from "ten ten android" searches also lands here.
- No one contesting it: searching "ten ten" on the French Play store, the apps ranked below it are all number-matching games called Ten Ten. It's the only app riding this brand name, and the official side hasn't said anything publicly.
On TikTok and X, no one seems to be promoting it. Searching "ten ten android" mostly returns old official videos from 2024 years ago; the most-watched is the official account's "android is now available everywhere," with 2.71M views. These old videos still send it traffic, but it makes no content of its own.
Its fatal flaw: it can't reach friends on iPhone
It has no product differentiation. Its only difference is that it's on Play and the official app isn't. That is also its biggest problem: its accounts don't connect to the official app. Android users install it to talk with friends who use the official app on iPhone, but once installed they can't add those friends unless they also get them to install the clone. So "fast to arrive, hard to retain" is almost inevitable, which fits the steady slide in French rankings and the odd rating distribution.
Two things could make it vanish overnight. One: the official app returns to Play. Two: the official company or trademark holder files a complaint with Google. The whole app is built on someone else's trademark, and it has no answer if either happens.
Who it's competing with
| Product | Scale | How it differs |
|---|---|---|
| ten ten official (Paris, Ten Ten SAS) | 14M Android installs before removal; 154K ratings in the French iOS store | The brand and friend graph belong to it, but it's gone on Android, and iOS hasn't been updated in over a year |
| Zello | Play 123M installs | Channel-based, aimed at work and public channels |
| Voxer | Play 40M installs | Walkie-talkie plus voice messages, aimed at paying businesses |
| Walkie Talkie - All Talk | Play 32.8M installs | Chat with strangers by channel, the opposite of "talk only with people you know" |
| Other established walkie-talkie tools | 3.9M–9.7M installs | General-purpose walkie-talkies that never touched the ten ten name |
On Android, apart from this app, there is no real product offering "just a few close friends, audio playing directly even with the screen locked." Big tech voice messages require tapping to play, and Apple's walkie-talkie only exists on the watch.
If it were you
C: you can't take this exact opportunity, but you can learn the approach. The term "ten ten" is already taken by it, so a copycat would only rank second. It sits on two landmines itself, trademark complaints and the official app returning, and it can't connect with official users. What's worth taking away is its way of finding opportunities and its speed.
Who it fits: small teams that already make utility apps on Google Play, have a developer account ready, and can build and ship an app in two or three weeks; people who accept that an app could be pulled at any time and treat it as one bet among many.
Who it doesn't fit: people who want to build a lasting brand; people who can't afford their account being banned along with their other apps (trademark complaints often take the whole account down); people hoping to build a social graph with this, since an impostor app has been cut off from official users from day one.
How to do it: there are two paths, with very different risk.
- Its way (gray): watch for signals like "a hot app is gone from a store": AppBrain marking it "no longer on Google Play," an app hot on iOS but absent from Play, a dead official domain, no updates for over a year. Within weeks, list a same-feature app with the brand term and category term in the title and package name. The window is usually only a few weeks after the removal. The cost is trademark risk, so decide before you start what you'll do if a complaint gets you taken down.
- The proper way (more worth it): don't impersonate; pick your own name and build an Android walkie-talkie app for "close friends only, audio straight through the lock screen," and ship on both Android and iOS. The official iOS app has been idle for over a year, so friend graphs will eventually need a new home. Use category terms like "walkie talkie," "push to talk" or "talkie-walkie" in the title, and before writing anything like "a ten ten alternative" in the store description, check whether local trademark law allows it.
How to get users: mainly through store search. The demand the official app left behind lives in searches like "ten ten android" and "talkie walkie amis." Also, one person installing isn't useful until they get friends to install too, so invite links and PIN sharing need to be the most prominent things in the app. On TikTok, people under the old official videos still ask "what about Android?"; replying there is cheaper than buying ads.
Timing: the official app hasn't returned to Play and hasn't said anything, so these few months are the window. If it comes back, or ten ten announces a shutdown or the iOS app is pulled, the window changes. The first case kills the opportunity; the second sends a large wave of iOS users looking for a new home.
Signs you got it wrong: ① the official app returns to Google Play, or this clone gets taken down, meaning the vacuum was shorter than expected; ② this clone's installs fall to a few hundred a day by the end of November, meaning the demand the official app left has been used up; ③ conversely, if it still adds over two thousand a day two months from now and is still charting in France, it means the category is missing a legitimate product on Android, and the non-impersonating route is worth serious effort.

- Verified Play Store brand-term hijacking: the original 2026-08 has disappeared from Play (AppBrain); a clone of 9-01 went live with "ten ten" and "walkie" keywords stuffed into its title and package name. Searching "ten ten" in the French Play store, it's the first result. The charted countries (France, Italy, Spain, UAE) overlap with the regions where the original has the most users.
- Confirmed Leftover word of mouth from the original (friends bring friends): the original topped both App Store and Play charts in France in 2024, with heavy press coverage. Why Ten Ten — Your Circle, On Tap (tenten.walkitalki.realtime.talk.instant.voice) got traction
Channel: Google Play | Research date: 2026-11-06 | Data: googleplay library (app_profile / app_day / app_day_ext / chart_rank / app_snap / app), appstore library, Jina / Exa search, TikHub, x-radar
Bottom line
The original ten ten was a French teen-viral voice app: hold to talk, and it plays through the lock screen. Its Android version disappeared from Google Play in August 2026, and the official site tenten.app is also down. This clone launched in Sep 1 using the original's name, copy and features. Search "ten ten" on Play and it ranks first, catching the traffic from people looking for ten ten on Android. The product has no real differentiation. It's a brand-name grab during a gap, not a product that beat anyone.
What it is
- The name "Ten Ten — Your Circle, On Tap" copies the original iOS title, "ten ten - your friends, on tap". Features: email sign-up, adding friends with a PIN, hold-to-talk (real-time voice that can wake the other phone), switching to video, and "poke". The store listing has a French localization (the French Play page).
- The developer account name is "All Reels Downloader, Video Saver And Downloader", an old Reels downloader account repurposed (developer_id 8565820667778752802). The developer site is listed as my-instants.com, same as another app, "MyInstants: Meme Soundboard" (206,641 installs, 2026-04-29 listings). That app also borrows the name of the well-known sound site myinstants.com. The contact email is [email protected], and the privacy contact is [email protected]. SOFTSOVE Private Limited is an IT outsourcing firm in Anand, Gujarat, India (softsove.com, LinkedIn). So it's probably outsourced development, or the same group (source: googleplay library
apptable; French Play detail page; Jina search). - The official site tentenly.com copies the original's lines: "For friends, not feeds", "Hold to talk", "Ten Ten can wake their phone", "Android is live" (Jina read of tentenly.com).
- The privacy policy sits behind a Google Docs link (app table privacy_policy). It carries ads (ad_supported=True) and an in-app purchase range of $0.19–$84.99, but the listing says nothing about paid content.

AppstoreSpy numbers are averaged across observations, so single days shouldn't be taken too literally, but the shape looks like pulses. It could be ad flights, or search spikes from original-related buzz. Unverified.
- Charts: French Communication free category chart 139 (10-29) → 198 (11-06), sliding down; Italy 153–198; India 120–170 (from 11-02); UAE and Spain occasionally squeeze into the top 200 (chart_rank). Never charted overall.
- Ratings: 458 (11-03) → 488 (11-06), average 4.0–4.17. The star distribution is odd: [1★ 0, 2★ 81, 3★ 81, 0, 5★ 325]. The 1-star and 4-star counts are identical to the 0,2-star and 3-star counts every day (app_snap). It doesn't look like organic ratings. It could be a scraping issue, or review farming. Unverified. The French Play page shows 3.8 stars.
- Versions ship fast: APKTurbo lists 1.0.7 (2026-09-16). The library has 10-16 as 1.1.7,10-28 and 1.1.22.

Discovery: the only app we found in our library and in Play search that specifically borrows the ten ten brand on Play. Reading the Play French search results for "ten ten" via Jina, it's the first result, with number-game apps called Ten Ten after it (Kenda AI, BROK GAMES, Gram Games' 1010!, etc.). That suggests the word "ten ten" on Android is almost entirely held by this one app right now.
Growth channels
- Store search / brand-term capture (confirmed, main channel): the original vanished from Play in 2026-08 (AppBrain: "ten ten is no longer on Google Play. It was there for 2 years, until August 2026. It was popular, with 14 million installs"), and the clone launched 9-01. Its title, subtitle and description use "Ten Ten" and "walkie-talkie", and its package name is stuffed with keywords (tenten.walkitalki.realtime.talk.instant.voice). Search "ten ten" and it ranks first. The countries it charts in are also where the original had the most users: France, Italy, Spain, UAE (the original's iOS ratings counts rank highest in these markets).
- Leftover demand from the original (confirmed background): the original hit #1 on both the App Store and Play in France in 2024, 5–June (Le Parisien). Le Figaro, Les Échos, TechCrunch, BFM Tech and others covered it. School bans also made the news (RTBF, L'Avenir). The iOS French store still ranks #92 in its category, so people on iPhone are still using and recommending it. When Android users get told "download ten ten" by friends, Play only shows the clone. Google Play community threads and YouTube videos like "Ten ten app NOT AVAILABLE ON ANDROID" and "How to fix can't install ten ten" show the "can't get it on Android" demand has been there all along.
- Fake official site / SEO (confirmed to exist, effect unknown): tentenly.com copies the original's copy, including "Android is live", to catch web searches like "ten ten android". Jina search for "Ten Ten Your Circle On Tap android" shows AppBrain and CNET Download have already indexed it.
- India traffic (speculative): from 11-02 it charted in India's Communication chart at 120–170. The dev team is in India, so it may have bought cheap traffic there, or used other tactics to push installs. Unverified. Ad libraries show no ads for it (it isn't on our tracking list, so no results doesn't mean no spend).
- TikTok / X / creators: TikHub searches for "ten ten android" and "tenten android" return only the original's old 2024 videos (@tentenapp "android is now available everywhere", 2.71M views) and fan edits of Naruto's Tenten. No content promoting this clone turned up. x-radar shows 30 posts in the last 0 days. No evidence for this channel.
Why it took off
- Timing: the original's delisting left an Android brand-term gap of roughly 14M installs. The clone went up within a month of the delisting and captured it directly.
- Zero-CAC demand: users are brought in by friends ("download ten ten and talk to me"). They already want the app. They search the brand name on Play, see a matching name, icon and description, and install.
- Copied almost everything: name, slogan, PIN friend-adding, hold-to-talk, lock-screen wake, French listing, and the fake site. Ordinary teens can't tell the difference.
- No one contests it: no second ten ten knockoff exists on Android, the original hasn't issued a clarification (its site is down), and Google hasn't removed the clone.
Differentiation
It has no product-level differentiation. The features are almost entirely copied from the original, with video calling added, which the original's copy also mentioned. Its only real difference is it's on Play and the original isn't. That's the only reason it broke out. It also has a structural flaw: it doesn't share accounts with the iOS original, so the social graph is cut off. An Android user who wants to talk to an iPhone friend on the original will find they can't connect. The odd star distribution and the French category ranking slipping from 139 to 198 both fit that flaw: it came fast, but it may not stick.
Visibility
Nobody's really heard of it yet. No media or X posts cover this clone, nothing on TikTok pushes it, and its revenue isn't public. The only coverage is of the real ten ten (French media wrote about it heavily in 2024).
Copycats
Nothing yet. Searching ten ten on Play turns up only this clone trading on the brand; TappyCall is a B2B walkie-talkie, so it doesn't count.
What others can borrow
- Grabbing brand keywords when a hot app disappears from a store / hasn't reached a platform yet: three signals to watch. One, AppBrain's "no longer on Google Play" flag and the
gonetable in our database. Two, apps that are hot on iOS but missing from Play. Three, official sites whose DNS is dead and that haven't been updated in years. The window is usually a few weeks after delisting. - One account spamming multiple name-jacking apps: the same publisher also runs a soundboard app copying myinstants.com (200k installs). That points to a repeatable playbook: rename old accounts, use keyword package names, host the privacy policy on Google Docs, set up fake landing pages, and outsource the dev work.
- Risk: trademark complaints get it delisted, and failing to match the real app's compatibility kills retention. If the original comes back or a lawyer's letter arrives, it drops to zero fast.
Still unclear
- Why did the real app vanish from Play? A shutdown, a developer account problem, or a Google takedown? No official word turned up publicly, and a Japanese toolparks 2026-10 article also says it "found no shutdown notice."
- Were the October spikes paid acquisition, a free promo, or natural search peaks? Not verified.
- Whether the star distribution [0,81,81,0,325] comes from review farming or scraping: not verified.
- What the $0.19–$84.99 in-app purchases actually sell, and whether there's real revenue: not verified.
- What SOFTSOVE's relationship to this account is (outsourced or the real company): not verified.
