# Unlock with one sentence: a voice lock-screen App that slept for half a year gained 390k extra installs in a month

**What it is** An Android fake lock screen: record a spoken phrase, say it to unlock. Fingerprint, pattern, and PIN serve as fallbacks. It's free, and every unlock shows an ad.

**Why it took off** "Unlocking your phone with your voice" is a phone trick that keeps going viral on short video. In October the whole category surged at once across India, the Middle East, and Africa. It caught the trend with an old package that already had installs, then bought ads in Nigeria and the Gulf to push the charts.

**C** **How you could follow it** Don't build a second voice lock screen. Copy its process for the next trend: watch phone-trick videos whose plays far exceed their creator's followers, quickly ship an App with the same name using an off-the-shelf tool shell or an old package with existing installs, put the trending phrase plus an evergreen keyword in the title, buy cheap traffic in cheap regions to climb the charts, and recover the money in high-ARPU regions.

Grade C: the category already has a dozen-plus players, with leaders at tens of millions of installs. October also saw four or five new entrants, and in November both its first-place rankings and daily installs were declining. It relies on an old package, an off-the-shelf paid-acquisition pipeline, and a trend others hyped. The playbook is worth studying, but this specific App isn't worth chasing. Still little known

Data (updated daily) · first launch 2026-08-21 · 11-07 installs 736,962

Android · Total installs worldwide

Data 2026-10-29 → 2026-11-07 (10 days, 10 observations). Google's detail page only refreshes install counts every other day, so a flat day doesn't mean nobody installed.

On Google Play there's an Android tool called Voice Lock Screen: App Lock, which had about 350k installs back in May. For the next half year it added only a few to a few dozen a day, basically a dead package. In Oct 9 it suddenly woke up, reaching 737k installs by Nov 6, adding 189k over the last 7 days, and at one point hit #13 on the Nigeria Tools free chart. It didn't change any features. It switched to a new developer account, caught the "voice lock screen" short-video trend, and added paid acquisition, and that's what got it going. This piece covers what it is, where its traffic came from, where its money comes from, who it's competing with, and what you should copy from it and what you shouldn't.

### Oct 17's "great app"

The most "helpful"-voted review on the store page (Nigeria storefront, 11-06) was left in Oct 17 by a user named Garian Enslin, just two words: "great app." 123 people found that helpful. Second place was an Oct 28 review reading "m&g phone khol do madam," roughly "open the phone, ma'am," as if someone were trying to speak the unlock phrase to the phone. 48 people marked it helpful.

Two-word praise collecting over a hundred "helpful" votes is rare for an App that grew organically. Look at the totals: 737k installs, only 305 ratings. The ratio of reviews to installs is about 4 in 10,000, while organically grown Apps usually run much higher. This App's volume doesn't come from word of mouth (inferred).

### What it is

A "fake lock screen": you record a phrase only you know, and when you wake the screen and say it, you're in. If the phrase is wrong, fingerprint, pattern, and PIN fallbacks are available, plus several lock-screen themes and security questions for password recovery. The store description's pitch is "your voice lock screen is unique, just like your fingerprint." It's not system-level biometrics. It's essentially a UI layer over the system lock screen combined with speech recognition (inferred).

It's free, marked "Contains ads" on the store, with no in-app purchases. A lock-screen App gets opened dozens of times a day, and every unlock can show an ad. That's the business.

### How a dead package woke up

| Timeline | Total installs | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| 2026-05-31 | About 347k | Third-party estimate |
| June ~ 10-08 | 347k → 348k | A few to a few dozen per day |
| 10-09 ~ 10-15 | About 362k | Suddenly around 2,000 per day |
| 10-18 ~ 10-27 | 406k → 548k | 14k ~ 20k per day |
| 10-28 ~ 10-31 | 548k | Almost stalled |
| 11-01 / 11-03 | 611k / 713k | Two observations: +64k and +102k |
| 11-06 | 737k | Settled back to around 10k per day |

(Google Play, daily from 10-29; earlier figures are third-party estimates)

Running for a while, pausing for two days, then running again: this stair-step pattern looks like budget-driven ad buying. The charts fit too. It only appeared on the tools charts in Nigeria, the UAE, and Saudi Arabia (plus two days in South Africa). Its best in Nigeria was #13 (11-01, 11-02), in the UAE #28, and in Saudi Arabia #44. From 11-03 onward all three regions dropped together, reaching #44, #61, and #104 by 11-06, in sync with the daily-install decline.

Its origins are more interesting. The store lists its launch date as 2026-08-21, but on APKPure you can find builds from October 1.2 (version 2025) and December 1.4, and it already had 350k installs by May. The developer account Appsquad itself only appeared in August 2026. Its other App, Caller ID: Trusted Call & SMS, shows a store "launch" date of Sep 7, yet it already had about 15M installs by June. It now has over 1,700 million with only 971 reviews. The most plausible explanation is that this new account took over several old packages with existing installs through Play's app transfer feature (inferred; not verified whether it was a transfer or the same team moving). Old packages come with history and install counts as social proof, so cold start and review are easier than for a new package.

The developer page lists Ahmedabad, Gujarat, India, with contact Zahid M Sumra. Their other App is Smart Alarm Clock.

### Where users come from

**First, a category trend everyone rides.** "Unlocking the phone with your voice" has been a recurring "phone trick" on short video over the past year or two. On TikTok, an account literally named @voice.lock.screen has 220k followers. A single post from 8 September 2025, "The best voicelock screen app for your phone," hit 10M to 30M views, far above the account's follower count, which looks more like paid promotion (inferred; I couldn't find which App the account was promoting, and it isn't this one's account). In February 2026, @technoskil posted a video on "locking your phone with voice commands" that got 1.44M views. On Facebook, there are plenty of Hindi and Arabic "How To Set Voice Lock Screen" tutorial reels. People who watch these then search the store for "voice lock," and the dozen-plus similarly named Apps split the traffic.

**Second, buying its own traffic in a few regions.** Stair-step growth, charting in only three or four regions, and rankings tracking daily installs all look like Google or Meta app-install campaigns (inferred, high confidence; specific channels and budgets weren't found). The region choice is deliberate. Nigeria has cheap installs and a low bar for tools charts, so it's used to climb the charts and earn organic volume. The UAE and Saudi Arabia have high ad rates, so they're used to recover the money. India is the core market for this category, yet the App stayed away from it.

**Third, piggybacking on two keywords in the title.** "Voice Lock Screen" is a trending phrase, and "App Lock" is a perennial search term. It combines both in the title, then repeats voice lock, fingerprint lock, and PIN lock throughout the description.

### Who it's competing with: a dozen-plus players, most of them bigger

| Product | Launched | Total installs | past 7 days | How it makes money |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Ai Voice Lock Screen - VoiceOS | 2025-09 | 15M | +284k | Subscriptions and in-app purchases plus ads; third-party estimates put October in-app purchases at $5K to $25k |
| Voice Screen Lock(o16i Apps) | 2022-09 | 13.2M | +231k | In-app purchases plus ads; charted in 16 regions; #1 on India's Personalization grossing chart |
| AI Voice Lock Screen(One byte Studio) | 2026-01 | 11.2M | +543k | In-app purchases plus ads; charted in 24 regions |
| Vokey - Voice Screen Lock | Unknown | 5.54M | +735k | No ads, no charge; #1 on India's Tools free chart |
| TalkKey - Voice Lock | Unknown | 370k | +252k | Subscription |
| Voice Lock: Security & Lock(GoldenPlace) | 2026-10 | 360k | +91k | Ads |
| Hey Buddy / AI Voice Lock: Voice Unlock, etc. | 2026-10 | 130k to 260k | 60k to 120k | In-app purchases or ads |

(Google Play,11-06)

On Nov 6, 9 similar Apps were charting in India at the same time, 4 in South Africa, 3 each in the UAE, Saudi Arabia, and Turkey, and 2 in Nigeria (best #6). This App ranked about sixth in the category. It wasn't the first and isn't the biggest. In October alone, four or five new players came in. Also, iPhone's Voice Control and Android's Voice Access already let you set custom commands, and many of the short-video tips are about exactly that. Both are built in and free.

Product-wise, it's nearly indistinguishable from these rivals. The difference is distribution: it adds one more high-volume keyword to the title, is completely free with ads only, and avoids India to spend in Nigeria and the Gulf instead.

### Where the money comes from

Ads only. Lock-screen Apps are opened very frequently by nature, and each unlock is a chance to show an ad. Ad rates in the Gulf are high, so one user's ads before uninstalling may be enough to recoup what it cost to acquire them. Whether this math actually works from the outside is hard to tell: there's no public revenue, and third-party estimates only say in-app purchases are under $5K, which is expected since it has none. The same account used the same approach to push Caller ID to 17M installs, suggesting this team has made the math work in other categories (inferred).

Few people know about it: nobody on X has mentioned it in the past 30 days, there's no media coverage, and the only results are auto-generated pages on APK download sites and app data sites.

### If it were you

**Verdict (C)** : worth studying, but not worth building this one. Voice lock screen is a crowded category. The top few have 10M+ installs, in-app purchases, and 20–30 countries, and new packages keep arriving. 11-03's rank and daily installs will keep sliding, and the hype may already be past its peak. It got going on three things: an old package with existing installs, ready-made paid acquisition and ad monetization, and a trend other people had already pumped. The first is hard to get quickly, and a dozen-plus players are already splitting the third.

**Who it's for** : small teams already going global with Android tools, with ad monetization and app install ad experience. For you this is a playbook you can copy: a "phone tip" trend shows up on short video, store search volume follows, and within a week or two you ship a same-name app on an existing tool shell. Titles stack the trend keyword with evergreen head terms, you buy installs in cheap stores to climb the charts, then monetize in high-CPM stores.

**Who it's not for** : indie devs with no paid acquisition experience who hope the product itself will get noticed. No one in this category got big on product quality. Good reviews and bad reviews both prove nothing. It comes down to launch speed and the ad budget.

**How to build it (if you still want to)** : don't build another "voice lock screen", build the next one. Watch phone-tip videos on TikTok and Facebook Reels whose views far exceed the creator's followers, check whether anyone is already building for the matching store keywords and how big the top players are. Also look for older Play tool packages with existing installs that have stopped updating. When chasing a trend, an old package launches faster than a new one (transfers must go through Play's official process). If you do build voice lock, skip India and test a region nobody has entered or that has few similar charted apps (Turkey, Southeast Asia, Spanish-speaking Latin America, my inference). Spend a small budget for a week to measure install cost and ad revenue per user.

**How to acquire users** : Google App campaigns or Meta app install ads. Start in cheap markets like Nigeria to push the category chart up, then scale into high-CPM markets in the Gulf and Europe. Use vertical demo creative of "say a sentence to your phone and it unlocks", the content already proven on short video.

**When it was too late** : the voice lock trend peaked in October and was already declining by early November. If you want in, it's these few weeks, and after New Year's it's very likely too late. When the next trend appears, the window is usually only one or two months.

**Signs I got it wrong** : ① its daily installs climb back above 10k a day within two weeks and it charts in more countries, meaning the category isn't topped out and the paid acquisition math works; ② it or a same-period new package starts charting in any country's Top Grossing, meaning voice lock can earn money and a serious version with in-app purchases is worth building; ③ the leaders VoiceOS and One byte Studio show clearly falling growth over the last 7 days, meaning the trend is fading, so stay out.

Data and sources: Google Play store page and reviews (Nigeria store, 11-06), developer page, tool category charts (10-29 to 11-06). Early-launch curves are third-party estimates. APKPure version history; TikTok search for "voice lock screen" and the homepages of @voice.lock.screen and @technoskil (11-06); a Facebook tutorial reel; X search over the last 30 days. Anything marked "inference" or "unverified" is my inference.

Where users come from

- Inference **Category short-video trend (TikTok/Facebook Reels/Instagram tutorials)** : TikTok @voice.lock.screen has 220k followers with single videos at 17M–30M views (2025-08~10); @technoskil 2026-02 with 1.44M views; many voice lock tutorial reels on FB/IG and Arabic hashtag pages. This drives store search, but these aren't this app's own accounts

- Inference **Paid acquisition (Google App campaigns / Meta app installs, channel unknown)** : step-shaped daily installs (near zero 10-28/29, then single jumps of +10-30k/+64k starting 102), charting only in ng/ae/sa, with rank rising and falling with growth. 305 reviews / 737k installs ≈ 0.04%. The same account's Caller ID has 17.2M installs but only 971 reviews. The ad library doesn't cover this advertiser

- **Verified** **Old package revived / app transfer** : APKPure lists 2025-10 of the 1.2 version. AppstoreSpy shows 2026-05-31 with 346k installs, yet the store launch date is 2026-08-21. Developer account first_release is 2026-08-21, and Caller ID also reset its launch date to 09-07 while already at 15.2M installs in June

- **Verified** **ASO keyword piggybacking** : the title stacks two search terms, Voice Lock Screen + App Lock, and the description is keyword-stuffed

## Voice Lock Screen: App Lock (Appsquad, Google Play) research report

> Package voice.locker.screenlocker.app · Tools · Ads only, no in-app purchases · Research date 2026-11-06

### Bottom line

It's not a new product. It's a **dormant old package (already around 346k installs at 2026-05, with daily growth in single digits to a few dozen)** . A developer account called Appsquad, newly appearing (2026-08), took it over, and the store's release date was reset to 2026-08-21. In mid-2026-10, when the "voice lock screen" category exploded in India, the Middle East, and Africa, **they used paid user acquisition to push the old package back up** . They only bought traffic in a few cheap or high-eCPM countries such as Nigeria, the UAE, and Saudi Arabia, and ad monetization covered the cost. The product itself is nearly identical to a dozen same-named competitors. Differentiation isn't why it took off.

### 1. Data: how it grew

Source: our googleplay library (app_snap / app_day / chart_rank, daily since 2026-10-29), plus app_day_ext (AppstoreSpy's estimate of daily installs since launch).

| Timeline | Total installs | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| 2026-05-31 | 346,520 | AppstoreSpy estimate; it already had 346k installs at this point, so the package predates the "2026-08-21 launch" by a wide margin |
| 2026-06 ~ 10-08 | 346k → 348k | Daily installs 1–50, essentially a dead package |
| 2026-10-09 ~ 10-15 | 362k | Suddenly averaging about 2,000 a day |
| 2026-10-18 ~ 10-27 | 406k → 548k | Averaging 14k–20k a day |
| 2026-10-28 ~ 29 | 548k | Nearly stopped (30 daily installs) |
| 2026-10-30 ~ 11-02 | 611k → 713k | Single observations of +64k and +102k |
| 2026-11-05 / 06 | 727k / 737k | Daily installs fell back to about 10k |

- Last 7 days +189k (app_profile.installs_gain_7d).

- Charted in only 3–4 stores. Best Nigeria Tools Top Free rank was #13 (11-01, 11-02), and best Nigeria overall Top Free was #87. UAE Tools best was #28, overall #184. Saudi Tools best was #44. South Africa Tools ranked #161–179 (10-31 and 11-01). After 11-03, rankings slid steadily in every store (ng 13 → 44, ae 28 → 61, sa 44 → 104), in step with the falling installs.

- Store page (Nigeria store): 4.8 stars, 305 reviews, 500K+ installs. The US store page shows no rating. Reviews/installs ≈ 0.04%, far below the usual ratio for organic installs. Our library has 0 review samples.

- Growth that turns on and off in steps (10-28/29 near zero, then sudden jumps starting 10-30), plus charting in only a few stores with rank rising and falling with growth, is the typical shape of **budget-driven paid acquisition** . It doesn't look like organic word of mouth.

#### The package's history: an old package changes hands

- APKPure has records of 1.2 versions (2025-10-15), 1.4 versions (2025-12-20), and 1.3 versions (2026-05-05) (search result snippets, apkpure.com/voice-lock-screen-app-lock/voice.locker.screenlocker.app), so the package existed at least since 2025-10.

- In our library, the Appsquad developer account has first_release = 2026-08-21, and the store launch dates of its two apps were both reset to 2026-08/09:
    - This app: "first release" 2026-08-21, yet it already had 346k installs in May. Current version updated 1.5,2026-09-11.
    - Caller ID: Trusted Call & SMS (com.caller.sms.trustedcall.app): "first release" 2026-09-07, yet AppstoreSpy recorded 2026-06-23M installs as of 15.2, now 17.2M. Its store page shows 10M+ downloads but only 971 reviews, which looks like heavy paid acquisition too (Play developer page).

- Developer info: Zahid M Sumra, Ahmedabad, Gujarat, India. Contact emails gamesquad2022@gmail.com and cpo.appsquad@gmail.com. The website appsquad.net lists only Caller ID (Play store page).

- Reasonable inference (unverified): Appsquad is a new account that took over an old package with existing installs through Play's app transfer (or the same team moved over). The advantage of an old package is history and install count as social proof, which lowers cold-start and review risk.

### 2. Competitors: a dozen-plus doing the same thing, most of them bigger

"Voice lock screen" = record a spoken passphrase and unlock by speaking it (in practice a pseudo-lock with speech recognition plus a PIN/pattern fallback). Similar apps in our googleplay library (as of 2026-11-06):

| Product | Developer | Launched | Total installs | past 7 days | Monetization | How this differs from the app |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Ai Voice Lock Screen - VoiceOS | AI Tech Expe | 2025-09-27 | 15M | +284k | Subscriptions/in-app purchases $2.99–39.99 + ads; 64k ratings 4.64 | One of the category leaders, AppGazers estimates October in-app purchases at $5.3K–25.4K. This app charges nothing |
| Voice Screen Lock | o16i Apps | 2022-09-24 | 13.2M | +231k | In-app purchases + ads; 97k ratings | Established, charted in 16 stores, #1 in India's personalized Top Grossing |
| AI Voice Lock Screen | One byte Studio(piontech.co) | 2026-01-14 | 11.2M | +543k | IAP + ads | Charted in 24 stores, the broadest reach |
| Vokey - Voice Screen Lock | Capslock (India) | Unknown | 5.54M | +735k | No ads, no in-app purchases | #1 in India's Tools Top Free, fastest growth over the last 7 days |
| App Lock: Fingerprint & PIN | TBS Solution | 2026-04-20 | 3.67M | +283k | — | Also packages "voice lock" under App Lock |
| TalkKey - Voice Lock | ARTHAIQ | Unknown | 370k | +252k | Subscription | #22 in India's Tools chart |
| Voice Lock: Security & Lock | GoldenPlace | 2026-10-23 | 360k | +91k | Ads | Took off in late September, weekly growth of 7–120k in mid-October |
| Hey Buddy: Voice Lock & Assist | SPACEWIRE | 2026-10-06 | 260k | +64k | — | Added a voice assistant |
| AI Voice Lock: Voice Unlock | LEE COUNTY ROADSIDE | 2026-10-09 | 130k | +116k | In-app purchases $4.99–9.99 + ads | — |
| Saykey / AwaazPro | Indian team | Unknown | 170k / 80k | — | — | — |

There are also same-name apps that aren't in our database or didn't chart: Voice Lock Screen (Albanny Technologies), Voice Screen Lock: Speak Lock, com.voice.lock.screen.unlock.phone (the Facebook page "EvoSmart App" is promoting it), plus the built-in iPhone / Android "voice control / Voice Access custom commands" (outlets like BGR have written tips on "unlocking iPhone with voice commands").

On that day (11-06) these competitors charted simultaneously in India 9 times, South Africa 4 times, the UAE, Saudi Arabia and Turkey 3 times each, and Nigeria 2 times (best rank #6). This app's volume ranks around #6 in the category, **neither the first mover nor the biggest** .

### 3. Growth tactics

1. **Category trend (platform-level content hotspot):** Voice lock screen has been a recurring "phone tip" format on TikTok, Facebook Reels, and Instagram across 2025–2026. The TikTok account @voice.lock.screen (220k followers, 235 videos) had single videos from 2025-08 to October with 17M–30M views but only 220k followers. Views far exceed followers, which looks a lot like Spark Ads paid promotion (TikHub; not verified which app it promotes). @technoskil had one video on "locking your phone with voice commands" reach 1.44M views 2026-02. There are many "How To Set Voice Lock Screen #viral #reels" tutorials on Facebook (India and Arabic-speaking regions). Arabic TikTok has a topic page for "how to set up a voice lock screen app". The hotspot creates search demand in the store, and every same-named app gets a share.

2. **Paid acquisition (inferred, high confidence)** : stepwise daily installs, charting in only 3–4 stores, a review-to-install ratio of 0.04%, and the same account's Caller ID app reaching 17.2M installs with 971 reviews. All point to Google App Campaigns / Meta app install ads. Our Meta and Google ad libraries did not track Appsquad (those libraries only cover advertisers on a list, so not finding it doesn't mean it wasn't advertised).

3. **Reviving an old package** : using an aged package with 346k existing installs and history instead of a new one, skipping the new-package cold start and review throttling.

4. **ASO piggybacking** : the title packs both "Voice Lock Screen" and "App Lock", two high-search terms, and the description is stuffed with "voice lock screen", "fingerprint lock", "PIN lock". App Lock is itself an evergreen head term.

5. **Market selection** : Nigeria (cheap installs, low bar to chart in tools) + UAE / Saudi Arabia (high ad eCPM). A classic combo of cheap charting and high-value recovery.

### 4. Why it can break out

- **Riding a category that's breaking out** : in October a batch of new Voice Lock apps (GoldenPlace started gaining traction late September, AI Voice Lock launched 10-09, Hey Buddy launched 10-06) all picked up volume at once, and this app 10-09 revived at the same time. The timing lines up exactly.

- **The money logic** : ad-only. Lock-screen apps can show interstitial/app-open ads on every unlock, so impressions are high. Recover in high-eCPM Middle East markets, chart cheaply in Nigeria.

- **The team has a proven playbook** : the same account's Caller ID app already reached 17M installs with this method. Paid acquisition plus ad monetization is a practiced approach, and voice lock is another arbitrage.

- **Not because of the product** : features, screenshots, descriptions and competitors are highly similar. There are no review samples, no in-app purchases, and no media or influencer coverage of the app itself.

### 5. Differentiation

Almost nothing. It differs from competitors only in: (1) its name combines "App Lock" and "Voice Lock Screen" to capture two terms; (2) it's entirely free and ad-only (most top players have subscriptions/IAP); (3) it only spends in a few non-Indian markets (competitors' main battleground is India). These are distribution choices, not product differences. It rose on category heat + paid acquisition + an old package, not on differentiation.

### 6. Visibility and copycats

- **Few people know about it yet** : X corpus (x-radar, last 30/60 days) returns 0 results for "voice lock screen" and "appsquad"; no media coverage, no public revenue. AppGazers estimates its October IAP revenue at under $5K (it has no IAP to begin with). The only places you can see it are automated pages like AppBrain, APKPure, Similarweb, and the appfigures Qatar tools chart (#25).

- **Copycats** : the category is already crowded (10+ apps in the table above, 4+ new entrants in October), but no one has specifically copied this one.

### 7. Takeaways

- Watch "phone tip" short-video trends → store search terms surge → quickly launch a same-name app using an off-the-shelf tool shell;

- Acquire or reuse old packages with existing installs to catch new trends, which start faster than new packages;

- Choose markets for ad monetization: cheap-market charting for organic installs + high-eCPM market recovery;

- Title stitching: pair one evergreen head term (App Lock) with one trend term (Voice Lock).

### 8. Uncertain

- Whether it's truly an app transfer (or the same team with a new account) is unverified;

- Acquisition channel (Google UAC or Meta) and budget are unverified, as the ad libraries don't cover it;

- Which app TikTok @voice.lock.screen belongs to is unverified;

- Ad revenue and whether it pays back are unknown. Whether the rank decline after 11-03 is budget cuts or category cooling needs another week or two to tell.
