A free plugin written by a village data entry operator: after the government portal was replaced, it was installed on 1,000 village office computers in two months
What it is A free Chrome / Edge extension that batch-fills work reports, attendance sheets, bank account details, payslips, and certificates for village data entry operators on India's new rural employment guarantee portal.
Why it took off The policy overhaul replaced the portal and made the old tools obsolete. The author is a data entry operator himself, with ten years of peer blogs, YouTube, and WhatsApp groups behind him. Tutorials appeared the day after launch, and it spread by word of mouth among peers.
CHow you could follow If you have a real government system login and a peer community, target a Hindi-speaking state it doesn't cover, or another government or platform portal that just got replaced. Start with the most painful batch step, then push it through local-language YouTube tutorials and district-level accounts.
1,000 users · rating 5.0 (22)
2026 Jul 1, India replaced MGNREGA, the rural employment guarantee that had run for nearly two decades, with a new law called VB-G RAM G, and the enrollment portal changed with it. Sep 8, a village data-entry operator in West Bengal uploaded a Chrome extension he had written, GramG Ninja, to the store. By Nov 6 it had 1,000 installs and 22 ratings, all 5 stars. No ads were bought, and there was not a single discussion on X. What it offers you is mainly a playbook you can follow, not a business you can copy.
The comments section is all village offices
Open the GramG Ninja store reviews page, and most of the commenters aren't people, they're units: "RAJHATI1 GP" (11-06, "Thank you bhai. Its a great Job"), "Kiriteswari GP" (11-03), "Majhergram GP" (10-24, "Shubro is best"), "Marokhana Gp" (10-14, "You are superstar Bro"), plus a district-level account "VBGRAMG Cell Karimpur-II Dev. Block" (10-19, "Superb"). GP is Gram Panchayat, the village council.
"Shubro" is the author, Subhrapratim De, whom people call Subho. He says he works as a data entry operator for a village council in West Bengal (locally called DEO or VLE). He started a blog called "Data Entry Operators – West Bengal" in 2016, posting operator lists, government documents and small tools, later moved to deowb.subho.net. His YouTube channel DEO West Bengal has 1.72K subscribers, and since 2020 he's been posting videos on NREGA entry automation. The extension is published by his small company in Hooghly district, VISION TECHNOLOGIES AND ROBOTICS, with an address on the first floor of the Tarakeswar bus station.
In other words, the people installing it aren't ordinary users. They're operators sitting at grassroots government office computers, typing data into the portal one entry at a time every day, and the ones giving him five stars are his peers.
What the job actually is
On the new portal, a village council's workload is a long chain: villagers' work demands (Form 4A), work allocation, muster rolls (attendance sheets), linking Aadhaar for payment (ABPS, which has to pass NPCI validation), entering bank accounts, generating and sending wage slips, and uploading 8 certificates. The portal has no bulk feature, so everything gets clicked through one row at a time.
GramG Ninja runs directly on the portal page the user is already logged into. You paste a table in from Excel, and it fills and submits each row for you. It supports preview, pause, resume, and downloads an Excel log when it's done. The official site says "100% Free" and it works on Chrome and Edge.
The changelog is full of pitfalls only people who do daily entry would know:
- The portal "only lists about 100 pending items at a time." A village council with 400 demands will mostly get marked "not found on portal" if the table isn't sorted, so v13.1.1 sorts by job card first before running.
- Are job card household numbers "002/2" or "002/002"? Most districts pad them to 3 digits, a few don't, so v14 added a setting for it.
- Saved muster rolls carried the previous sheet's MB number and page number over to the next one. 13.1.1 and 13.1.2 were fixed in two rounds, and people on older versions are reminded to check their logs.
In two months it went from v1 to v14 (11-06 updates), covering work demands all the way to wage slips, then to the district level: from v10 it supports Programme Officer (district) account logins, so one person can handle every village council in the district.
Why now
The window was opened by policy. The VB-G RAM G Act 2025-12-16 passed the lower house, raising guaranteed days from 100 to 125, effective from 2026-07-01. West Bengal began implementation in 7-02 (The Hindu, 2026-07-02). The new portal's pages and workflows changed, and new requirements like eKYC/ABPS and 8 certificates were added, with all the work landing on village council operators. Scripts and extensions for the old portal became obsolete. For example, "NREGA Demand Automation," listed in August 2025, only works with the old portal's work demand page, and has 22 users now.
West Bengal has an extra layer. Since 2022 the central government has withheld MGNREGA funds here, so projects stalled for years, and the new law restarted them (The Hindu). The state has about 7.6M valid job cards, so a backlog of entries suddenly came pouring out. This layer is inference: the timeline comes from reporting, and the size of the backlog is unverified.
The timing is very tight. The new portal went live in July, the extension was listed in Sep 8, and in Sep 9 the author posted "VB G RAM G 4A Entry Automator - Free" on YouTube. From October 13 to 16 he posted 5 GramG Ninja tutorials in a row.
Where users come from
Zero paid acquisition. Users all came from the peer circle the author built over ten years:
| Channel | How it's done |
|---|---|
| His own operator website | The homepage of deowb.subho.net is a whole set of "VLE free tools," with GramG Ninja as the lead |
| YouTube tutorials | A video went up the day after the listing. A single video got only 90–190 views, but the viewers are the target users |
| One page per feature | Work demands, attendance, ABPS, FTO, and frozen DPR each get a page. There's also a no-install "certificate generator" web tool that makes 8 certificates as PDFs right in the browser, used as a hook |
| Facebook page | gramgninja, 107 followers, one post per release |
| WhatsApp and word of mouth | The website has a WhatsApp help line, and the comments section is village councils vouching for each other. How it spread through groups isn't visible from outside |
| Growth built into the product | From v11 there's a "Supervisor App": the village foreman (mate) uses a phone (demand.sebagram.in) to photograph Form 4A, the enrollment list, and bank passbooks. The data goes straight into the extension queue on the village council computer, and invite links and QR codes are shared via WhatsApp |
The last point is the most important. Foremen need enrollment lists, so the village council has to install the extension. Once a district account uses it, it gets pushed to every council in the district. One install is one unit, and one district is dozens of units. West Bengal has roughly 3,300 village councils (estimate), and 1,000 users is no small number (the store's "1,000" is a bracket, the actual figure is between 1,000 and 1,999).
For operators on government computers, "will installing a third-party extension get me in trouble?" is a real concern. He's put work into this: the store listing has a D-U-N-S number and an EU trader status, and the privacy policy states it doesn't read Aadhaar numbers and stores data locally.
Who it's competing with
| Name | Scale | What's different |
|---|---|---|
| nDocuSoft (Karnataka, since 2020) | 3,000 users, 4.92 reviews / 62 rating | Paid. The village council version costs Rs 4,500 per financial year + 18% GST. It mainly generates paper forms and registers, and doesn't submit in bulk on the portal |
| NREGA Bot(nregabot.com) | Unverified, 11-06 the official site won't open | Requires installing software and buying monthly, quarterly, or annual licenses, with a 30-day trial |
| Muster Roll Automation for VB-G RAM G (Unofficial) | Small, the store doesn't show user counts | Only does attendance sheet PDF storage and bulk generation. It's a subset of GramG Ninja, and 11-02 is still being updated |
| General auto-fill tools (Excellent Data Filler, etc.) | Tens of thousands to hundreds of thousands of users | You have to record macros and map fields yourself, and you don't know the rules for job card matching, NPCI validation, or 100-row pagination |
| Built into the portal / official NMMS App | Nationwide | The official app handles on-site attendance photos, with no bulk entry on the back end |
The only free option I see that covers the whole workflow on the new portal and submits directly within it is 11-06.
Where the money comes from
Almost no monetization. The extension is free, but from v13 it added "if it saves you time, you can support it via UPI." The author's site runs Google AdSense, and the store has no in-app purchases. The rival nDocuSoft at Rs 4,500 a year (about $50) already sets the price ceiling for this niche, and the payer is the village council's public account, which goes through procurement. If it ever charges, the most likely place is the Supervisor App layer (its Android version already has a license mechanism) or per-district pricing. This is inference; the author hasn't said so publicly.
There's also a risk: from v13 usage stats are forced on with no toggle, and they report the village council's name. If the state government ever moves against third-party extensions, this is the first thing that will be pointed to.
If it were you
C: worth learning from, but don't copy this one. You most likely can't get into this portal. Without a village council or district account, you can't even see the pages, let alone debug. He won because he's a user himself and has ten years of peer networks, and followers can't get either. The money is also small: free is the default in this niche, the paid ceiling is around $50 a year, and it has to go through government procurement.
Who it's for: developers who work entry in a government system themselves, or who regularly do work for these units (like accounting, document-processing, or CSC common service center operators), with real accounts and an existing peer group.
Who it's not for: indie developers with no portal account who don't understand the local language or administrative rules, and anyone who wants subscription revenue.
How to do it: don't copy it head-on in West Bengal. Go where it doesn't cover. VB-G RAM G is a national portal, and Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Rajasthan, and other Hindi-belt states have more village councils. Rules also differ locally (job card numbering varies by district). I haven't seen a comparably complete free tool in those states (unverified). Or pick a different portal that just changed: India's GST, PM-Kisan, state land registries, or government and major platform back ends in other countries that get redesigned. Copy the approach: pick the single most painful step (like work demands, hundreds of entries a day), run it in bulk on the page the user is already logged into, with preview, resume, and logs. Give each feature a landing page, and use a no-install web tool to draw people in.
How to get users: no ads. Post YouTube tutorials in the local language, and publish the same day as the listing. Get into the operators' WhatsApp and Facebook groups. Land one or two district accounts first and let them push it down. Build a mobile app for foremen or subordinates to expand one install into a whole unit.
When to move: the first half year after a portal overhaul is a window. The new portal launched in July, so early in 2027 is still early. Later, local tools in each state will appear, and the government may add bulk features itself.
What would mean I got it wrong: (1) the portal officially adds bulk import or Excel upload, and the extension has no reason to exist; (2) the state or central government issues an order banning third-party extensions on the portal or requiring their removal; (3) GramG Ninja's user count stays stuck in the 1,000 bracket and the reviews only come from West Bengal, meaning it's stuck inside the author's circle and demand in other states may not be that big. Conversely, if similar tools show up in Hindi-belt states within a few months and user counts quickly pass a thousand, the gap is real and you need to move fast.
One line for everyone building products: when the back end of a government or major platform is overhauled, all the old tools become obsolete. Whoever first offers a free, complete solution can take the entire window, but only if they were already sitting at that computer.

GramG Ninja: why it took off
Chrome extension · id aafcpdejpfbkcnglhihleoiaalnfhlko · researched 2026-11-06
One line
GramG Ninja is a free Chrome / Edge extension that automates the repetitive data entry on India's new rural employment guarantee portal, VB-G RAM G (formerly MGNREGA). It covers Work Demand (4A), work allocation, Muster Roll, ABPS, wage slips, 8-certificate uploads, and more. It took off because three things lined up: 2026-07-01 policy changed and the portal changed with it, so the old entry scripts stopped working; the author is a West Bengal village-level data entry operator (DEO/VLE) with a ready-made peer community (a blog since 2016 and a YouTube channel with 1.72K subscribers); and over about two months they iterated to v14, covering the whole workflow. Growth has cost almost nothing. It has spread by word of mouth in that peer community.
1. Basic data
- Store: 1,000 users, 5.0 rating from 22 reviews, first published 2026-09-08, current version v14.0.0 (updated 2026-11-06), 2.44 MiB. Developer: VISION TECHNOLOGIES AND ROBOTICS (1st floor, Tarakeswar bus stand, Hooghly district, West Bengal), listed as an EU trader with a D-U-N-S number. (Chrome Web Store page, 2026-11-06)
- Our database (chromestore.item_snap, data only from related cards): 11-04 has 1,000 users / 20 rating, and 11-06 has 1,000 users / 22 rating. It picked up 2 more ratings in just over two days.
- Reviews (store reviews page): nearly all signed by village panchayats (Gram Panchayat) and district accounts, such as "RAJHATI1 GP", "Kiriteswari GP", "Majhergram GP", "Marokhana Gp", "VBGRAMG Cell Karimpur-II Dev. Block", all in West Bengal. The content is things like "Shubro is best" and "You are superstar Bro", which reads like peers who know each other. It shows the users are operators on government office computers at the grassroots level, not individual consumers.
- Monetization: the extension says "100% Free", and since v13 it has had "voluntary UPI support". The author's site deowb.subho.net runs Google AdSense (ca-pub-3160732569039408 in the page source). There are no in-app purchases in the store.
2. Background: why now
- VB-G RAM G Act 2025 passed the Lok Sabha 2025-12-16, replacing MGNREGA and raising the guaranteed work days from 100 to 125 days; in force from 2026-07-01 (PIB; nregaportal.com; India Development Review). West Bengal began implementing it 2026-07-02 (The Hindu, 2026-07-02). The state has 75.97 lakh (about 7.6M) active job cards.
- The new portal lives at *.dord.gov.in (vbgramg / vbgramgde2, etc.). Pages and workflows changed. New requirements like eKYC/ABPS (Aadhaar-linked payments), 8-certificates, and Form 4A now land on every village panchayat's data entry operator. Scripts and plugins for the old NREGA portal, such as the "NREGA Demand Automation" from 2025-08 that targeted only the old demand_new.aspx page, no longer work.
- Since 2022, the centre stopped funding MGNREGA in West Bengal and works stalled for several years. After the act was replaced, work restarted (The Hindu). The backlog of demand was released all at once, so the volume of entry work is large. This point is inference; the timeline comes from The Hindu.
- The timeline fits: the new portal went live in July, the extension was listed in Sep 8, on Sep 9 the author posted the YouTube video "VB G RAM G 4A Entry Automator - Free", and between October 13 and 16 they posted 5 more GramG Ninja tutorials back to back (deowb.subho.net/videos).
3. Competitors
| Name | Where | Launched | Scale | How it differs from GramG Ninja |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| nDocuSoft (SONASHANKAR IT Solutions, Karnataka) | Chrome + SaaS | 2020-04 | 3,000 users, 4.92 rating from 62 reviews (chromestore database) | Pricing: GP edition at Rs 4,500 per financial year + 18% GST, implementing-agency edition at Rs 3,000. Mainly generates paper documents (work orders, Form 6/8/9, 7 large registers), not bulk submission on the portal. Users are around Karnataka. |
| NREGA Bot(nregabot.com) | Desktop program / browser | Not verified | Unverified (the official site's Cloudflare tunnel wouldn't load on the day of research, 530) | Paid license (monthly / quarterly / yearly), 30-day trial. Covers Demand, Allocation, etc., and says it supports VB-G-RAM-G. Requires installing software and buying a license. |
| NREGA Demand Automation(bikashnayak75) | Chrome / Firefox | 2025-08 | 22 users | Only automates date entry on the old NREGA portal's demand page. A small 11KiB tool that never caught up with the new portal. |
| Muster Roll Automation for VB-G RAM G (Unofficial)(ABDUL ALIM) | Chrome | 2026 years (v2.0.0,11-02 update) | Very small, the store page doesn't show user counts | Only does Muster Roll PDF saving, bulk generation and reprinting. It's a subset of GramG Ninja's features, so it's a follower or a parallel developer. |
| Generic spreadsheet auto-fill (Excel auto-fill, Excellent Data Filler 20K users, Lightning Autofill, etc.) | Chrome | Years | Tens of thousands to hundreds of thousands | You have to record macros and configure fields yourself. They don't understand business rules like job card matching, NPCI validation, or the portal listing only 100 pending items at a time. |
| Built in by the government | Portal / NMMS App | — | — | The portal itself has no bulk feature. The official NMMS handles attendance photos, not back-office entry. |
Bottom line: similar tools have existed, but they're either paid, cover only one small step, or are still stuck on the old portal. Only GramG Ninja so far offers a free extension covering the whole workflow on the new VB-G RAM G portal.
4. Growth tactics (where users come from)
| Channel | Evidence | Confirmed? |
|---|---|---|
| The author's own DEO community (blog / site) | The author, Subhrapratim De (Subho), says they are a "data entry operator (VLE) for a village panchayat in West Bengal." They started the blog "Data Entry Operators – West Bengal" in 2016, with a DEO list, government orders, and a software section, later moved to deowb.subho.net. The homepage is now a full set of "free VLE tools", with GramG Ninja as the main product. | Yes |
| YouTube tutorials (DEO West Bengal channel) | 1.72K subscribers, 53 videos, making NREGA automation videos since 2020. Single GramG Ninja series videos get roughly 90–190 views. | Yes |
| Facebook page gramgninja | 107 followers. Posts with every release (e.g. "v10.0.0 is live now", Supervisor App launch). | Yes |
| SEO: one landing page per feature | Under deowb.subho.net/tools/ there's a page for each of 4A Automator, Muster Roll, ABPS, FTO, Freeze DPR, and more, plus a no-install "certificate generator" to drive traffic. Searching "VBGRAMG chrome extension muster roll" ranks it first. | Yes |
| WhatsApp / word of mouth | The site has a WhatsApp help button. Supervisor App sends invite links and QR codes over WhatsApp. Block accounts handle rolls the village panchayats "send over WhatsApp". Review sections are panchayat accounts recommending each other. | Partly confirmed (spread within groups itself isn't visible) |
| In-product acquisition: Supervisor App | From v11, village foremen (mates) can register rolls on their phones (demand.sebagram.in). Panchayats have to install the extension to use it. This grows one user into a small network of "panchayat + several foremen". | Yes (mechanism confirmed, effect not verified) |
| District (Block / PO) accounts | From v10, it supports Programme Officer login and can handle the whole Block's gram panchayats; reviews mention "VBGRAMG Cell Karimpur-II Dev. Block". A district-level account used it and pushed it down to every gram panchayat in its area | Yes (district-level account reviews) |
| Paid ads / X / Reddit / HN / media | x-radar search for VBGRAMG and GramG Ninja: 0 results; no media coverage found | No evidence |
5. Why it took off
- A platform event created the window: 2026-07-01 portal replaced, old tools stopped working, and data-entry operators at hundreds of thousands of gram panchayats nationwide had to relearn everything with more work (125 days, eKYC/ABPS, 8 certificates).
- The author is the user: he is a data-entry operator at a West Bengal gram panchayat, so he knows which rules trip people up. The description is full of frontline detail, like "the portal lists only about 100 pending items at a time", "the job card number is still 002/2 or 002/002", "a saved Muster Roll can't be deleted". Generic form-filling tools can't do this.
- Ready-made channels: ten years of DEO blogging, YouTube, and peer relationships. A tutorial video appeared the day after launch, and users spread it within the same state and the same professional circle.
- Free and fast iteration: it went from v1 to v14 in two months, with each release built around user requests ("The feature every operator asks for"). The rival nDocuSoft charges Rs 4,500 a year, and NREGA Bot requires a license. Many field operators are contract workers paid per piece, so a free tool has a much lower barrier.
- Careful handling for institutional users: it has a D-U-N-S number and an EU trader identity, plus a detailed privacy policy (Aadhaar isn't read, data stays local). Every batch operation can be previewed, paused, resumed, and logged. For operators on government computers, this reduces the fear that installing a third-party plugin will cause trouble.
6. Differentiation
- Covers the full workflow and submits in bulk directly in the portal: demand, work assignment, attendance, wage lists, bank accounts, ABPS, certificates, and district-level DPR freezing all live in one extension that runs on the portal pages the user is already logged into. Rivals either only generate files (nDocuSoft) or handle a single step (two small extensions).
- New portal + free: it is the earliest free, complete solution for the new portal.
- The Supervisor App connects the extension to the field: foremen photograph Form 4A, enrollment slips, and bank passbooks on their phones, and the data goes straight into the extension's queue. This turns a single-user tool into a collaboration network between panchayats and foremen, which I haven't seen among rivals.
- Is that why it took off?: Partly, but read it together with "the author's channels". The differentiation keeps users and earns 5 stars; the users came because of the author's existing DEO circle. With the differentiation alone and without that circle, reaching 1,000 institutional users within two months would be hard.
7. How many people have seen it
- Revenue isn't public (there was none, only AdSense and UPI tips). Zero discussion on X and no media coverage. Outside its circle almost nobody knows about it; it spreads only within the small DEO/VLE circles of West Bengal.
- Copycats: "Muster Roll Automation for VB-G RAM G (Unofficial)" has already appeared (a small subset of its features). Similar local tools in other states will likely appear; not verified.
8. What others can learn
- Target "government / major platform portal replacements": when a portal changes, all old tools break, and whoever first offers a free, complete solution captures the whole window. India's GST, PM-Kisan, land registration (e.g. the Banglarbhumi Easyprint in the shop recommendations), and state portals all offer this kind of opportunity.
- Frontline practitioners + community channels + free tool → monetize later: the users are institutional operators. One person installs it and a whole gram panchayat follows; a district account adopts it and pushes it to every gram panchayat in its area. Monetization could come from AdSense, tips, or later charging for a collaboration layer like the Supervisor App (its Android version already has a "licence" mechanism).
- Build an SEO landing page for each feature, plus a "no-install web version" tool (certificate generator) to drive traffic.
9. Uncertain
- 1,000 is the store's rounded scale; the actual figure may be between 1,000 and 1,999. Edge user count not checked.
- Geographic spread: all reviews come from West Bengal. Whether it can expand to other states (Hindi-speaking regions, different portal localizations) is unverified.
- The engineering effort needed to restart in West Bengal and the size of the backlog are unverified.
- NREGA Bot's user numbers and pricing weren't obtained (its website wouldn't open that day).
- Whether VisionTech plans to monetize through the Supervisor App or by charging district accounts is unverified.
- Since v13, usage statistics are forced on with no opt-out, and they report the Panchayat. If the government ever moves to regulate third-party plugins, this is a compliance risk.
