A homework-writing YouTube channel built a free plugin for Pakistani online university students: 461 users in a month. The plugin makes no money itself; it drives traffic to the homework business.
What it is A free Chrome extension. Once installed, students at Pakistan's Virtual University can see grade predictions, GPA and degree paths on the school website, and mark online lectures as watched or copy quiz questions in one click.
Why it took off The studio behind it runs a VU student channel with 29.9k subscribers. During homework season it posted 29 "assignment answer" videos in 10 days, and the first line of each description was the plugin link. Users grew 63% in 5 days.
CHow you could follow Don't copy the VU plugin. If you already have traffic and a paid service in a vertical audience, build a free extension that fixes the web page those users open every day, put the paid entry point on the homepage, and link to it from your content.

KST Learning VU Assistant is a Chrome extension that runs only on Pakistan's Virtual University (VU) learning system. It shows grades, calculates GPA and maps degree paths. It launched in Oct 4, and daily users went from 283 in Nov 1 to 461 by 6. Its maker isn't a tool developer but a studio that writes assignments, takes quizzes and watches lectures for VU students. The plugin is free, and the studio makes its money from the YouTube channel and the homework business. Below: how it got users, why it built a plugin, and what you can learn from it.
A "homework answer" video with 14k views
Early on Oct 30, YouTube channel KST Learning posted a video titled "CS304 Assignment 1 Solution Fall 2026". CS304 is an object-oriented programming course in VU's computer science program. The video walks through the answers to the first assignment, and its description says "100% correct" and "get a full score of 20/20, won't be flagged for plagiarism". By Nov 6, it had 13,778 views.
The first link in the description is this plugin, labeled "Assignments, Quiz, GDB" (GDB is VU's discussion-board assignment). The second line is the studio's WhatsApp channel. Below that are a "paid service contact number" and five rules in Urdu under "paid service rules". The first rule: the assignment is submitted by us, logging into your LMS ourselves.
From Oct 27 to Nov 6, the channel posted 29 such "assignment answer" videos, each with the plugin link in the description. Individual views ranged from 1 thousand to 14k, about 160k in total (YouTube, 11-06). The plugin gained 178 users between Nov 2 and 6, right in the middle of this wave of videos (Chrome Web Store, 11-06).
What it is
VU is Pakistan's public distance-learning university. All its courses run in one online learning management system (LMS). 139,692 students sat exams last semester (VU website). The school built its own proctoring plugin, "VU Quiz Firewall", which blocks copying and limits tab switching during quizzes, and has 80k users (Chrome Web Store, 11-06). Around it grew a ring of "bypass proctoring" plugins, and the top two each have 20k users.
KST's plugin doesn't take that route. The word "bypass" appears nowhere in its name or description. The store listing reads:
| Features | What the store page says |
|---|---|
| Grades | The homepage shows assessment weights for each course and attendance, and predicts "if I score X on this exam, what will I end up with" |
| Transcript | Reorganized by semester, GPA calculated automatically, exportable as PDF |
| Degree roadmap | Credits earned, what to take next semester, and related skills and career suggestions |
| Multi-account vault | Stores multiple VU accounts locally, encrypted, behind one master password |
| Study tools | "Optional course progress control", copying quiz and discussion questions, saving quiz questions as PDF |
The last line is vague. In practice it means marking online lectures as watched in one click and copying quiz questions. Competing plugins put that in the title as the selling point; this one puts it at the end. The store page also says the homepage banner and some quick links lead to KST Learning's services, including paid ones.
Where users came from: entirely its own channel
The KST Learning channel opened 2022 years ago. It has 29.9k subscribers, 1,681 videos and 11.3M total views (YouTube, 11-06). It normally posts short explainers for VU courses, and its most-watched videos have hundreds of thousands of views. It is a place VU students already trust.
After the plugin launched, the channel posted three tutorials: an Urdu installation demo on Oct 6 (3,071 views), a usage tutorial on Oct 13 (1,075 views), and an update note on Oct 17 (1,014 views). Then homework season began, and answer videos kept coming, each with the link. 34 of the last 50 videos included it (YouTube, 11-06).
Beyond that, the studio website published one blog post about the plugin (133 views). Nobody on X mentions it, no media has written about it, and no paid ads have been spotted.
The comments under the tutorials show why students install it:
"Super useful, all my courses show as watched in a minute, it used to take ages." — 10-13
"I'm a third-year VU CS student. Your courses have always helped, and this plugin is a lifesaver. I wish it had existed in my first semester." — 10-13
The school has already issued a ban
Oct 16, VU sent students a notice. Roughly, it said: don't use Chrome extensions, third-party tools, or paid services claiming to help with the LMS; they can leak account and personal data; anyone using them to get around LMS controls or gain improper academic help will face administrative and disciplinary action under university rules; remove such extensions immediately. (KST reposted the original in its video comments; VU-linked Facebook and Instagram accounts also shared it.)
The notice named extensions and paid ghostwriting, exactly the two things KST sells. In the comments, several students came asking "does it still work?" and "will accounts get banned?" The channel replied: "No ban, KST's extension is 100% safe" and "You can use it." One student asked the more pointed question: "You also run LMS management services. Will the school come after you?" The channel answered: "The school won't do that. Nobody knows what happens later."
Students kept installing it, and users grew 60% after the ban. But this shows the extension could be targeted by the school at any time, or taken down after a report.
Where the money comes from
The extension charges nothing, and the store has no in-app purchases. The money sits outside it. KST's website advertises "LMS management" at ₨2,000 per course and ₨12,000 per semester (about $43, estimated), plus ghostwritten assignments, proxy quizzes and proxy final projects, all ordered via WhatsApp. The studio says it has been doing this for 5+ years. Revenue is not public.
The extension serves this business in two ways. First, every time a student opens the LMS, the homepage banner links to the paid services, right where the assignment deadline is. Second, it works as a multi-account vault: an ordinary student has one account, but a proxy studio logging in and submitting for many students needs "one master password for many VU accounts" (inferred). So some of the 461 users may be the studio's own people.

Rivals chase volume by searching the store for "bypass". KST relies on its own channel. It has about one-fortieth the users of the top player, and the difference is that it sits on a business that makes money; the extension is just the entry point. Several small extensions grew in the same period. The start of term and assignment season lifted the whole niche, and KST's 5-day +63% was the fastest.
If it were you
Grade C. Worth studying for the playbook, not worth copying. The extension itself is small. Users come from a channel built over four years, and the money comes from ghostwriting, which the school has explicitly banned.
Good fit for: people who already have traffic and a paid service in a vertical: creators making tutorials for a specific exam, platform or profession, or small studios that sell services. What you're missing isn't a product, it's an entry point that people touch every day.
Bad fit for: developers without their own audience. The VU niche already has five or six similar extensions with 10,000+ users that win through store search. A new one would have neither their head start nor KST's channel. It's also a bad fit for anyone unwilling to touch academic dishonesty and account proxying: the money is there, but the school's ban could escalate at any time.
How to do it: find a place where a crowd opens the same web page every day: a university learning system, an exam registration site, a government service portal, a seller back office. Build a free extension that fixes the page's worst pain points (confusing grades, unclear progress, convoluted steps), and put your paid service entry on the homepage. Lead with compliant, everyday features, and keep sensitive functions out of the name.
How to get users: plug it into your own content. KST followed the semester rhythm, posting heavily in the two weeks before deadlines when demand peaked. Every video description opened with the extension link, followed by a native-language install tutorial.
When to move: there's no fixed window. Follow the peak of your audience. For school-related products, it's right before the first assignment deadline after term starts.
Signs you've misread it: (1) the KST extension is removed from the Chrome Web Store, or VU starts banning accounts that used it, which would show that a compliance veneer can't protect a grey-area business; (2) the channel keeps posting links through the mid-term assignment cycle but extension users stop growing, which would show it only brings one-off curiosity from viewers and can't retain them; (3) the reverse: users pass 1,000, reviews rise noticeably, and the channel gets no bigger promotion, which would show the grades and GPA features retain users on their own and this playbook is more replicable than it looks.

Why KST Learning VU Assistant ranked
Verdict
This extension doesn't run on its product alone. It is a free lead-generation tool for KST Learning, a Pakistani studio that ghostwrites and manages VU LMS accounts. All of its users come from the studio's own YouTube channel: 29.9K subscribers and 11.3M total views. The first Fall 2026 assignment deadlines clustered from late October to early November, and during that stretch the studio posted 30 "assignment answer" videos, each linking the extension in its description, and installs rose with them.
The scale is small: 461 users, while the top player in the same niche has 20k. Calling it a breakout is a stretch. More accurately, it's a cold start powered by owned traffic.
Compared with peers, the difference is in the packaging. Rivals sell "firewall bypass, skipping lectures, AI answers". This one leads with grades, GPA, a degree roadmap and an encrypted multi-account vault, with the borderline features placed further back. The grades feature keeps users around; the multi-account vault matches its own proxy-management business.

- Runs only on
vulms.vu.edu.pkand is completely free. The store lists no in-app purchases. But the description states: "Some Quick Links and the Home banner link to KST Learning services, including paid services" (store page). - extops has no growth curve for this ID and it has never appeared on an extops chart. No extension in our library lists it as "related" (the related table only has reverse links: the detail pages of VU Toolkit, VU TALK and Firewall Bypass vu list it as related).
2. Target audience and market size
- VU (Virtual University of Pakistan) is a public distance-learning university in Pakistan. Its website says it has 2002 enrolled since 208,129; 2025 students sat exams in Fall 139,692 (vu.edu.pk news, NewsId=9415). The audience is a concentrated group of several hundred thousand students, all on the same LMS.
- VU's IT department built its own "VU Quiz Firewall", which has 80,000 users (our library; 11-06 went from 70k to 80k). Students must install it to take quizzes, and it blocks copy-paste and limits tab switching. This is why a whole "Firewall Bypass" extension ecosystem exists.

Growth over the same period (11-01 → 11-06) for a few players: VU Bypass Everything 731→795, AI Quiz Solver 614→712, VU Magic 92→119 (from 11-04), KST 283→461. They all rose, which means the start of term and assignment season lifted the whole category together. KST grew fastest, +178, about 63%.
The difference: Competitors nearly all put "bypass firewall, skip lectures, AI quiz answers" in their names and pull installs from store searches for bypass. KST's name and description don't mention bypass. Its homepage features course assessment weights and attendance, what-if grade prediction, semester-by-semester transcripts and GPA (exportable to PDF), a degree roadmap (credit progress plus career advice), an encrypted multi-account vault (AES-GCM, master-password protected), and the VU academic calendar. "Lesson Auto-Watch / Complete & Next" (which marks lessons as watched and, on ungraded formative quizzes, auto-selects an answer and submits) and "Copy Quiz" are also there, just written low-key (store description and privacy.html). The compliant framing makes it less likely to be pulled from the store, and features like grades and GPA are useful every time someone opens the LMS, so retention should beat pure bypass tools (unverified).
The multi-account vault fits the business: KST's core business is "VU LMS Handling", meaning doing students' assignments, quizzes, GDBs and lectures for them (lms_handling.php on the site lists Custom at 2,000 rupees per course and Full Semester at 12,000 rupees, orders via WhatsApp). An outsourcing operator logs into many clients' accounts, so one-click multi-account login fits that work well. This is inference, unverified.
4. Where users come from (growth levers)
- Its own YouTube channel (confirmed, main channel). Channel @KSTLearning (YouTube Data API): 29,900 subscribers, 11,259,792,1,681 total video views, 2022-03 monetization enabled.
- There are 3 dedicated extension tutorials: 10-06 "KST Learning VU LMS Extension | Installation & Features Guide in Urdu", 3,071 views, 33 comments; 10-13 "How to Use KST Learning VU Assistant…Urdu Tutorial", 1,075 views, 48 comments; 10-17 "…How to Install, Update & New Features Explained", 1,014 views.
- Key point: Of the last 50 uploads, 34 have the extension's store link in the description. About 30 of them are "CSxxx Assignment 1 Solution Fall 2026" videos, posted between 10-27 and 11-06, with 1k–14k views each (for example CS304 13,778, CS403 12,818, CS201 11,111, CS504 10,005), roughly 180k views combined. Others include "How to Solve Any Quiz Using AI in Seconds" (10-29,1,563) and "How to Watch VU Lectures Quickly" (10-30,409), also with links. The extension gained 178 users from 11-02 to 11-06, right at the peak of this wave of answer videos.
- The channel's most-watched videos over time are the CS301 and CS201 short courses, each with hundreds of thousands of views. It's a channel VU students already trust.
- Its own website (confirmed, small volume). kstlearning.com published a blog post, "KST Learning VU LMS Extension", on 2026-10-05 with 133 views, linking to the store.
- Extension lineup (confirmed, very small). The same developer also has "KST Learning YT Videos History" (YouTube saved items and playlist positions), with 43 users and 3 ratings, promoted in video descriptions alongside VU Assistant.
- Facebook and WhatsApp groups (unverified). My recall was a "VU students Facebook group", but I didn't find direct evidence of KST posting in groups this time. The site lists a Facebook profile, Instagram @khizarmeharofficial and a WhatsApp number.
- Channels not found: Nothing on X (x-radar returned no results in 30 days); not on the extops chart; no press coverage; no ad spend found (I didn't check ad libraries, and this VU audience doesn't look like a paid-acquisition target).
5. How the money comes back
The extension is free and doesn't charge directly. The homepage banner and Quick Links send people to paid services on kstlearning.com: LMS handling, assignments, quizzes, GDBs, CS619 final projects, online lectures, ordered via WhatsApp. The site says "over 5 years in the education website space". The extension is a second place, after YouTube, where it reaches students every day, sitting inside the LMS right next to assignment and quiz deadlines. No public revenue data.
VI. Visibility
Hardly anyone knows about it yet. 461 users; third-party tracking (extops) doesn't cover it; no discussion on X or in the press; revenue not public. Its reach is limited to viewers of KST's own YouTube channel.
7. What's worth borrowing
- Service providers that already have a vertical audience (on YouTube or in communities): build a page-enhancing extension students open every day, turn one-off video views into a permanent entry point in the browser, and put a link to your paid services inside it.
- In an already gray category, lead with compliant, useful features (grades, GPA, roadmap) and keep sensitive features low-key, to reduce the risk of removal and of being targeted by the university.
- Time promotion to the semester: during assignment peaks, add the link consistently across many "answer" video descriptions.
8. What's still uncertain
- How many of the 461 users are KST's own outsourcing accounts or operators. The multi-account vault may be built for internal use.
- Whether it's promoted in Facebook and WhatsApp groups.
- How many paid orders the extension actually brings in.
- Whether VU treats features like Auto-Watch and Copy Quiz as violations, and whether the Chrome Web Store removes these extensions.
- Store rating count 5→6, too few to judge retention.
