# A Reel with 1.84M views brought in 100k users: Tally, a Claude usage counter plugin, won on its author's own 200k followers

**What it is** A Chrome extension that shows "how many messages you have left and when it resets" below Claude's input box. When your quota runs out, one click moves the conversation to ChatGPT, Gemini, or Grok.

**Why it took off** The author is a Hindi-language AI creator with 200k followers. The day after launch he posted two Reels on "how to keep using Claude after your limit," 3.2M views combined, driving traffic with "comment for the link." He then pushed the rating count to 1 times the category's typical level with "leave a review, get 5 days of membership."

**C** **How you could follow** Don't copy the plugin, copy the playbook: if you already have short-video traffic, when a platform's rules tighten, build a small tool you can explain in one sentence. On launch day, post several cuts and use comment keywords to auto-DM people the link.

Grade C: the counter category already has twenty-plus competitors, and those without built-in traffic stall at a few thousand users. Tally rode its creator's audience, which followers can't copy, and if Anthropic changes the UI or API, the whole category disappears. What's worth learning is the distribution playbook. Buzz in small circles

Tally is a Chrome extension: it shows "how many messages you have left" below Claude's input box, and when the quota runs out, one click moves the conversation to ChatGPT, Gemini, or Grok. Chrome's store has twenty-plus versions of the same thing, most stuck at a few hundred to a few thousand users. Tally hit 100k in a month. The difference isn't the feature, it's the person behind it: a Hindi-language Instagram creator with 203k followers who covers AI tools, who put all his traffic behind it the day after launch. Below: what it is, where the users came from, where the money comes from, who's competing, and which part is worth learning.

### Five months later, people are still typing "Claude" in the comments

On 2026 May 30, Divy Kairoth (Instagram @divy.kairoth), a product manager who graduated from IIT Delhi, posted 7 Reels in one day. They were different cuts of the same footage. Two of them were about Tally:

- One had the caption "Comment Claude," so typing "Claude" in the comments auto-DMed you the link. By November it had 1.36M views, 24k likes, and **33k comments** , more comments than likes.

- The other was captioned "Link in bio (don't comment)," sending people to the profile link. That one had 1.84M views, 23.4k likes, and 55k shares. The name his link page gives this item is "How to illegally use Claude after limits." Clicking through lands on Tally's store page.

Tally had only been live for two days then (May 28). When I opened these two Reels again on Nov 6, the newest comments were minutes or hours old, and they still said the same word: "Claude". Even the one that says "don't comment" has people typing it anyway.

By the author's own account, Tally reached 15 days to 50k users (X bio), and 1 months later hit 100k (LinkedIn, 2026-09-03: "no massive team. no giant ad budget… engineered distribution"). The Chrome Web Store shows 11-06 with 100k users, a 4.59 rating from 2,711 reviews.

### What it is

The first line of the store description is the pitch: "Claude tells you 'Current session: 31%'. It never tells you the thing you actually want to know: how many more messages is that?"

After installing, a thin bar appears below claude.ai's input box, reading something like "31% used, about 12 opus messages, resets in 1h 22m": how much you've used, how many messages you have left at the model you're using, and when it resets. It estimates from your actual message usage, so the numbers shift if you switch to Sonnet or Haiku. Two more features:

- **Scissors** : compresses the current conversation into a summary and opens a new Claude chat to continue from it.

- **Handoff** : when your quota is nearly gone, one click opens ChatGPT, Gemini, or Grok and pastes your last few turns into the input box, with the full conversation attached as a Markdown file.

The whole extension is 87KB with no server. The data is computed by reading claude.ai's own usage API using your logged-in session. The developer account is a personal Gmail with only this one extension under it.

### Where the money comes from: there's a paywall, but it's rough

The free tier includes all the counting features, with handoff capped at 1 uses per day. Pro removes the handoff and scissors limits and adds an "extra usage allowance" table. The extension lists $4/month, $20/year, or a $30 lifetime purchase, with payment and licensing through Polar.

The monetization looks unfinished: a code comment says the payment link "still points at the ORIGINAL Polar checkout," meaning "Buy Pro" still sells the old plan. The website's pricing page lists a different set, "$2/month or $20 lifetime." The site sits on a Vercel subdomain, and the homepage's customer logos and the "Staff Eng, Halftone" testimonial look like template placeholders. Revenue isn't public and the paying-user count isn't visible from outside. For its audience (Indian students and junior developers, price-sensitive), the paid conversion rate is probably low (inference).

### How the 2,711 ratings were built

Claude Usage Tracker, an established open-source tool with the same 100k users, has only 532 ratings, about a fifth of Tally's 5 times that. The reason is in the code: once the 1 free handoffs are used up, a "Leave a review · 1 day free →" prompt appears. Clicking it opens the store review page and immediately grants 24 hours of Pro locally, without checking whether you actually wrote a review. The code comment reads: "Trust-based… If users game it, they still saw the review page. The point is to surface reviews."

Store reviews show the effect directly. Nov 5, one review: "i exhausted the free version so it asked me to write review to get one more free. so here i am". From Nov 3 to 6, a dozen or so reviews, mostly one or two words: "good", "ok", "Nice tool", "Use full". Even now the rating count keeps climbing by about 4~5 a day (Chrome Store, from 11-01 2,685 to 11-06 2,711).

### Who it's competing with: this category is already crowded

In the first half of 2026, Claude's limits became layered (session, weekly, per-model), and the official page only shows a percentage. So dozens of counter extensions appeared at once. Chrome Store 11-06 numbers:

| Product | Launched | Users / Rating | vs. Tally |
|---|---|---|---|
| Claude's official usage page | Already there | All Claude users | Shows only a percentage; you have to open settings to see it, no conversion to message counts |
| Claude Usage Tracker(lugia19) | 2024-12 | 100k / 532 | Long-running, open source, free, syncs across devices; no migration feature |
| Claude Usage Meter(SelectorsHub) | 2026-05-18 | 10k / 320 | Launched 10 days before Tally, similar features |
| Claude Token Counter(Krishna Somani) | 2026-05-24 | 10k / 17 | Launched 4 days earlier, almost the same name, counting only |
| ClaudeKarma | 2026-02 | 20k / 128 | Usage tracking only |
| Claude Tuner | 2026-02 | 10k / 133 | Tracks Claude, ChatGPT and Gemini limits together |
| Capsule Hub | 2026-01 | 100k / 60 | Focused on moving context across AIs, overlaps with handoff, no counting |
| About 20 other Claude counter extensions | 2025-10 to 2026-07 | Most under 2,000 | Same feature |

The clearest signal is rows three and four of the table: two apps with similar features that launched even earlier are both stuck at 10k. Tally also got copycats after July. One app that launched in Jul 9, "Claude Token Counter — Real-Time Usage, Messages Left", has 6,000 users, and its listing nearly copies Tally's website copy ("Live token counter for Claude", "model-aware messages-left").

### Why this one took off

- **The traffic came from the author's own audience.** Two Reels total 3.2M views and 33k "comment for the link" replies. This is a professional AI creator's routine: he already takes sponsorships and affiliate deals for AI tools, and each time he cuts the same footage into several versions and posts them together. Tally was the first time he used this playbook on his own product.

- **The hook isn't "check your usage", it's "you won't be stuck when you run out".** "How to illegally use Claude after limits" spreads far better than "Claude usage counter", and the one-click move to ChatGPT/Gemini/Grok was built for that line. For Indian students juggling several free AI tiers, it hits a real pain point.

- **The demand is real.** The official page doesn't tell you how many messages you have left. When more than twenty people built the same thing at once, that's the evidence.

- **The store signals were manufactured.** Trading reviews for free trials pushed the rating count to 5 times the category average, which helps in store search and conversion.

Almost nobody in English tech circles knows it. X turns up no related discussion, the author has only 65 followers on X, and Reddit, HN and the media have no dedicated posts. It spread within India's Instagram AI-tool community. Once the Reel buzz faded, what's left is probably store search traffic from the words "Claude" and "token counter" in the name (inference, no ranking data).

### If it were you

**C. You can learn something from it, but this extension isn't worth copying.** More than twenty people built the counting feature, and the ones without traffic mostly stalled at a few thousand users. Tally took off because of the author's own 200k followers, which copycats can't access. On top of that, if Anthropic just shows remaining messages in the chat box, or changes the usage API, the whole category gets wiped out.

**Who it suits:** someone who already has a short-video account that reliably pulls hundreds of thousands to a million views (any language, any AI-tool niche). What you should copy is the playbook, not this extension.

**Who it doesn't suit:** developers with no traffic of their own who want to win store search with a "better Claude counter". The twenty-odd in the table are your future. And anyone hoping to earn from it: the author himself hasn't wired up payments properly, and the user base is extremely price-sensitive.

**How to do it:** find a small pain point that can be shown as "one move fixes it" and build it as an extension, ideally right on top of a freshly tightened limit or newly announced rule (this time it was Claude's layered limits; next time it could be another platform's quotas or a download restriction). Keep the feature small enough to finish in a week or two, fully local, no backend. Put the one feature that fits in a sentence first, like Tally's "move everything out with one click".

**How to get users:** on launch day or the day after, cut 5~7 versions of the same footage and post them together. Half use "auto-DM the link on keyword comment", half link to the profile, and see which performs better. Headlines promise results ("keep going when your limit runs out") rather than features ("usage counter"). In the extension, show "leave a review for 1 days of Pro" at the moment the free quota runs out, to build the rating count quickly. Note this trick is grey under Chrome Web Store policy (incentivized reviews), and getting reported carries a risk of removal (inference).

**When to get in:** these opportunities follow platform rule changes, so the window is the first few weeks after a rule changes. Tally launched within weeks of Claude tightening its limits and posted its video the day after launch. Start a month after the rules change and the category is already crowded.

**What would show you read it wrong:** ① Tally climbs to the 200k tier on Chrome Store, or a counter extension without built-in traffic also passes 100k, which would mean organic store traffic is bigger than assumed and a standalone extension can work; ② the author's next product, using the same playbook, doesn't take off, which would mean this time the hook and timing lined up and the playbook isn't reproducible; ③ Anthropic displays remaining messages directly on claude.ai, which ends the category, leaving only the playbook half worth learning.

Where users come from

- **Verified** **The author's own Instagram Reels (Hindi-language AI creator, 203k followers)** : on day 2 after launch (05-30) he posted A/B cuts: DY90Tu3hnUH with 1.84M views (link page titled "How to illegally use Claude after limits", linking to the Tally store page), DY90LuVh3dn "Comment Claude" with 1.36M views and 33k comments; the author claims 15 days to 50k and 1 months to 100k users

- **Verified** **Auto-DM the link on keyword comment** : the "Comment Claude" Reel has 33k comments, more than its likes (24k), the typical pattern of comment-triggered auto-DMs

- **Verified** **Alt accounts / repost accounts and LinkedIn reshares** : Reels from @_chetan_pujari_ and @zhiprompts, LinkedIn posts by Vikas Gupta and S. Gokul, Facebook videos, a tutorial from lxgicstudios

- **Verified** **Review-for-1-days-of-Pro (incentivized positive reviews)** : source file lib/billing.js: "Trust-based: open the review tab + grant the trial… The point is to surface reviews"; store review quote: "it asked me to write review to get one more free"

- Inferred **Store search (Claude + token counter in the name)** : after the Reel traffic faded, ratings still grow by about +4~5 per day; no ranking data

- Inferred **X / HN / Reddit / media** : x-radar and web search found no related discussion; the author has only 65 followers on X

## Tally — Claude token counter (baicaaiepddopbodaccgfffdimceidbp) research report

Research date 2026-11-06. Data sources: our chromestore database (item / item_snap / related, from 2026-11-01), the Chrome Store listing and reviews pages (read via Jina), the extension package (v0.4.2) obtained from the official download URL and its source code, the author's Instagram (play data pulled via TikHub), the link page, LinkedIn, X, and the official site tally-kohl-pi.vercel.app.

### Bottom line

**A million-view Indian AI creator built this extension and grew it through his own Instagram Reels.** The author, Divy Kairoth, is an IIT Delhi graduate and product manager who covers AI tools in Hindi on Instagram, with 203k followers. 2026-05-28 the extension launched, and two days later (05-30) he posted several Reels about "what to do when Claude runs out", titled "How to illegally use Claude after limits". Two of them got 1.84M and 1.36M views; one linked to his profile, the other used an auto-reply of "comment Claude and I'll DM you the link". By his own account the extension reached 15k users in 50 days and 1k in 100 months. The feature itself belongs to a category (Claude usage counting) that more than a dozen people have already built. Its two functional differences are converting percentages into "how many messages are left" and one-click moving conversations to ChatGPT/Gemini/Grok. The second is exactly the hook of that Reel. The rating count (2,711) is 5 times that of its peers, because of a mechanism in the extension: "leave one review and get 1 days of Pro".

### What it is

- An MV3 extension, 87KB package, no backend. It adds a thin bar below the claude.ai input box showing percentage used, remaining message count converted for the current model (e.g. "31% used, about 12 opus messages, resets in 1h 22m") and a reset countdown. The same numbers appear on the sidebar and toolbar icon. Two extra features: scissors, which condenses the current conversation into a summary and opens a new Claude chat; and handoff, which opens ChatGPT/Gemini/Grok and pastes the last few turns into the input box, with the full conversation attached as a Markdown file. Usage data is read from claude.ai's own endpoints using the user's logged-in session (sources: store description; manifest.json in the package).

- Pricing: the free tier includes all counting features and 1 handoffs per day. Pro is $4/month, $20/year, or a $30 one-time purchase, with unlimited handoff and fork and an extra "extra usage allowance" table. Payment and licensing run through Polar.sh (org slug: divy-kairoth). The source comments say the payment link "still points at the ORIGINAL Polar checkout", meaning "Buy Pro" still sells the old plan. The official pricing page still shows the old prices, "$2/month or $20 lifetime". Monetization is clearly still rough (sources: extension package lib/billing.js and popup.html; official /pricing page).

- Developer account divykairoth (Gmail, not a business account), with this extension as its only product. The site sits on a Vercel subdomain, and the homepage's customer logos (Lumen AI, Halftone…) and the "Staff Eng, Halftone" testimonial look like placeholder content.

- Data (chromestore database): users 100,000 (the store's approximate figure; from 11-01 to 11-06 it stayed in the 100k tier), rating 4.59, rating count grew from 11-01 2,685 to 11-06 2,711, roughly +4~5 per day. Launched 2026-05-28, last updated 2026-09-01 (v0.4.2).

### Competitors

| Product | Where | Launched | Scale (chromestore database 11-06) | How it differs |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Claude's official usage page (Settings → Usage) | Big-company features | Already there | All Claude users | Only shows a percentage like "Current session 31%", doesn't convert it to message counts; you have to click in for details; it doesn't move the chat over. Tally's copy is built around exactly this |
| Claude Usage Tracker(lugia19) | Chrome / open source | 2024-12-20 | 100k users, 532 rating, 4.83 | Old and open source. It also shows remaining quota and syncs across devices. It doesn't move features over to other AIs, and it's free. Tally has the same user count, but 5× as many ratings |
| Claude Usage Meter(SelectorsHub) | Chrome | 2026-05-18 | 10k users, 320 rating | Launched 10 days before Tally with about the same features. No creator with built-in reach behind it |
| Claude Token Counter(Krishna Somani) | Chrome | 2026-05-24 | 10k users, 17 rating | Launched 4 days before Tally with nearly the same name. Only counts |
| ClaudeKarma(Claude Limit & Usage Tracker) | Chrome | 2026-02-03 | 20k users, 128 rating | Usage tracking only |
| Claude Tuner | Chrome | 2026-02-23 | 10k users, 133 rating | Tracks Claude, ChatGPT and Gemini limits all at once |
| Claude QoL(lugia19) | Chrome | 2025-09-20 | 10k users | Branching, export and search. The focus is making Claude itself better, not moving chats elsewhere |
| Capsule Hub by Tilantra | Chrome | 2026-01-07 | 100k users, 60 rating, has in-app purchases | Pitches "pack the chat into a capsule and reuse the context across AIs". Overlaps with Tally's handoff, but doesn't do counting |
| AI Exporter / AI Chat Exporter | Chrome | 2023 | 100k users each | Exports to PDF/MD. Tally gives copy / download Markdown away for free, so this part is covered too |
| Other Claude counter extensions (the chromestore library returns 20 or more) | Chrome | 2025-10 to 2026-07 | Most have under 2,000 users | Same feature, nearly all stuck at a few hundred to a few thousand users |
| ai-tally.app (same name, unrelated) | macOS menu bar | Not verified | Not verified | Desktop app tracking Claude/Codex/Gemini limits, paid |

Bottom line: **this category was already crowded** . In the first half of 2026, Claude tightened limits and weekly caps arrived, and dozens of people built nearly the same thing. Tally launched 10 days after SelectorsHub and 4 days after Krishna Somani's, and has no feature moat.

### Growth levers (ranked by strength of evidence)

1. **The creator's own Instagram Reels (confirmed, the main driver)**
    - Creator @divy.kairoth, 203k followers, bio reads "I teach everything AI. Batch of 25 @iitdelhi". Makes short AI tool recommendation videos, mostly in Hindi (from TikHub user info).
    - On 2026-05-30 (day 2 after launch) he posted 7 Reels in one go. Same footage, different cuts, an A/B test, which is his usual approach. The two tied to Claude/Tally are:
          - DY90Tu3hnUH, caption "Link in bio (don't comment)": **1.84M views** , 23.4k likes, 12k comments, 55k shares. His link page labels it "How to illegally use Claude after limits", and the link goes to Tally's store page with utm parameters.
          - DY90LuVh3dn, caption "Comment Claude": **1.36M views** , 24k likes, **33k comments** . A classic "comment a keyword, get a DM with the link" setup. Comments outnumber likes.
    - 06-15 also posted a set of "Don't comment claude" variants, the top one at 80k views. Possibly a second push.
    - The author's claims: on X, the bio says "that's when I hit 50k users on Tally (my last product)" / "hit 50,000 users in 15 days"; a LinkedIn post by 2026-09-03 says "My last product has hit more than 100,000 users in 1 month. no massive team. no giant ad budget… engineered distribution" (224 likes).
    - He also takes sponsored work. The Reve Reel carries #revepartner and @influence__inc, Emergent used an affiliate link, and in October he posted 7 times for gehnaphoto.com. So "million-view Reels + comment-for-link" is his professional skill, and Tally was a demo of it for his own product.

2. **Re-uploads / small AI tool accounts (confirmed, small volume)** : @_chetan_pujari_ (06-05, "Comment \"Tally\" for the link"), @zhiprompts (06-14,146 views). Also Vikas Gupta and S. Gokul on LinkedIn, and Amit Singh Moga on Facebook, all posted things like "Don't upgrade when Claude runs out, use this free extension." lxgicstudios.com published a tutorial, and crxplorer has a security score page. These are long-tail effects after it took off, not the main driver.

3. **Store search (inferred)** : the name contains "Claude" and "token counter", two high-frequency search terms. It's getting roughly 4~5 new ratings a day and users are flat at the 100k level, which suggests that once the Reel traffic faded, what's left is steady organic search traffic. No search ranking data, unverified.

4. **Reviews traded for trial (confirmed, affects ratings not user count)** : free users get only 1 handoffs a day, and when they run out a prompt says "Leave a review · 1 day free →". Tapping it opens the store review page and grants 24 hours of Pro locally, without checking whether a review was actually written. The source comment reads: "Trust-based: open the review tab + grant the trial… If users game it, they still saw the review page. The point is to surface reviews". One of the latest store reviews says: "i exhausted the free version so it asked me to write review to get one more free. so here i am". Most recent reviewers have Indian names and very short text ("good", "ok", "Nice tool"). This is why its rating count (2,711) is 5 times that of lugia19 (532) with a similar user base.

5. **X / HN / Reddit / press: none** . x-radar searches for "Tally claude" and "claude token counter" return no relevant posts, and the creator's X account has only 65 followers. Reddit has plenty of similar posts but no dedicated Tally thread. No press coverage.

6. **Ads** : no evidence of paid promotion found (the ad library only tracks a fixed list of products, so not finding it doesn't mean it didn't happen). The creator himself says "no giant ad budget".

### Why it made the charts

- **The creator supplied the traffic** : by day 2 after launch, two Reels had a combined 3.2M views and 33k "comment for the link" responses, and in 15 days it reached 50k users. SelectorsHub and Krishna Somani's, with the same feature and earlier launches, both stalled at 10k. The gap is distribution.

- **The hook is well chosen** : the Reel isn't selling "see your usage", it's selling "keep working when Claude runs out" (the title even says illegally use Claude after limits). The in-app "move to ChatGPT/Gemini/Grok in one tap" is built for that hook, and it hits the pain point for price-sensitive Indian students and junior devs who keep several free AI tiers open at once.

- **Timing** : through 2026, Claude's session / weekly / per-model limits kept getting more complicated, the official UI only shows a percentage, and the need to know "how many messages do I have left" is real. 20+ similar tools appearing at once is the evidence.

- **The store signals were manufactured** : trading reviews for 1 days of Pro pushed the rating count to 5× that of comparable products, which helps it in store search and conversion versus the competition.

### Differentiation

- On the product side, two points: (1) convert the percentages into "remaining messages" per model, and track the session, weekly, and per-model limits together; (2) when the quota runs out, hand off to another AI in one click, with the full conversation carried over as an attachment, plus a "scissors" button to start a new chat. Point (2) is rare among pure usage-counter extensions, though Capsule Hub and various export extensions can do something similar.

- **Differentiation isn't the main reason it took off** . The feature gap mainly gave the Reel an easy hook ("no need to panic when you run out"). What really separated it was the creator's own 200k-follower Indian AI channel, plus the "comment for the link" distribution play. Feature-equivalent competitors had no such distribution, so they didn't take off.

### Visibility

- **Whispers in a small circle** : it was seen by millions in India's Instagram AI tools crowd, but almost nobody in English tech circles (X, HN, Reddit, press) knows about it. Revenue isn't public, and it isn't listed on TrustMRR. The creator disclosed the user count (100k), not revenue.

- Copycats already exist: chokingwin's "Claude Token Counter — Real-Time Usage, Messages Left" (listed 2026-07-09, 6,000 users). Its description, "Live token counter for Claude. Model-aware messages-left, reset countdowns", nearly matches Tally's website copy ("Live token counter for Claude", "model-aware messages-left").

### Takeaways

- "Creator = developer": first build a short-video account that reliably pulls million-view Reels, then build a small tool that can be filmed as "one trick solves the pain point", and on day 2 after launch mass-produce A/B cuts, using "comment a keyword, get a DM" to collect traffic.

- The hook matters more than the feature: the same counter pitched as "keep going after you run out" travels far better than one pitched as "see your usage".

- Pop up "leave a review for 1 days of Pro" at the exact moment the free quota runs out. No verification, zero cost, and it can push the rating count to 5× that of comparable products.

- No server, pure local computation, so the privacy pitch and operating costs are both low.
