Screenlet – Device Mockups & Demo Videos · screenlet.org

# Screen Studio, moved into Chrome: a one-person Screenlet, 775 users in five months

**What it is** A Chrome extension that wraps any web page in real MacBook, iPhone and iPad frames, and records device mockups or demo videos with a camera bubble, voiceover and auto-zoom. Free with a watermark, $29 one-time purchase.

**Why it took off** It hasn't really taken off yet. Screen Studio's move to subscriptions created demand for one-time, cross-platform alternatives. The author's own Reddit post got about 88 upvotes, and SEO comparison pages added a few hundred users.

**D** **How you could follow it** Don't build another auto-zoom screen recorder. If you do, build only the device-mockup half it does best and sell it to teams making store screenshots and ad creative, or copy its playbook and be first with a one-time alternative when the next desktop tool moves to subscriptions.

Grade D: the product has only 775 users after five months, which proves nothing. Its category, "Screen Studio in the browser," is already held by Cursorful, which has 50k users and a Featured badge, with more than a dozen similar tools behind it. The window from Screen Studio's subscription switch has also passed by a year. Few people know about it yet

775 users · rating 5.0 (6)

Screen Studio switched to subscription-only in October 2025 years ago, and a group of people who didn't want monthly payments, or didn't have a Mac, started looking for alternatives. Indian engineer Abuzar Akhtar built Screenlet: a Chrome extension that wraps a web page in a real MacBook or iPhone frame, then records a demo video with auto-zoom, sold as a $29 one-time purchase. The idea was right and the timing was right, but five months later it has only 775 users. Below: what it is, where users came from, and why this spot isn't worth crowding into now.

### A LinkedIn post with one like

In Aug 2026 25, Abuzar Akhtar posted on LinkedIn with the opening line "Screen recording, except your site sits inside a real MacBook." He is in New Delhi, works during the day as an engineer at Speechify, and has 3,104 followers on LinkedIn. The post got about 1 reactions and 2 comments.

The extension went live in May 27. In July, a few five-star reviews appeared on the Chrome Web Store. On Jul 13, Mohd Ayan wrote "This extension is a real time-saver… Highly recommended!" and the developer replied the next day with "thankyou brother." On Jul 18, Dayam Nadeem wrote "Great free alternative to Loom and Screen Studio." By Nov 6 there were 6 ratings in total, all 5.0 stars, and no more have come since (Chrome Web Store, 11-06). Few reviews and such familiar wording read more like friends and colleagues supporting a launch, and they don't show whether strangers like it.

### What it is

After installing, you click on any open page and it gets placed inside a device: MacBook Pro 16, MacBook Air, a Dell laptop, Studio Display, iPhone 17 Pro Max, iPad, with macOS, Windows or iOS browser chrome drawn around it. Inside the iPhone frame, the site loads its real mobile layout rather than a shrunken desktop version.

You can capture a transparent mockup with background, rounded corners and shadow, or record video: a camera bubble, microphone narration, and it tracks where you click and zooms in there automatically. After recording you fine-tune in the editor and export as 1080p MP4 or WebM, in 16:9, 1:1 or 9:16 aspect ratios. Everything runs locally, with no sign-up and no upload. An "AI records for you" option was added later: AI operates your site itself to generate a demo.

In one line: a simplified Screen Studio in the browser, plus a device mockup kit.

### The numbers: four or five new users a day

| | Numbers |
|---|---|
| Launched | 2026-05-27 |
| users | 9/1 about 380 → 10/4 about 648 → 11/6 775 (third-party extension stats) |
| Last week | 11-01 767 → 11-04 765 → 11-06 775 (Chrome Web Store) |
| Rating | 5.0,6 reviews |
| Version | 5 months, 6 releases, up to v8.3.x |

It grew fastest from September to October, adding more than two hundred people in a month. It has slowed since: +30 in the last 127 days, about four or five a day. No spike and no drop, just a small extension few people have noticed.

### Where users came from: entirely the author's own promotion

**Reddit was the only real push.** He posted on r/SideProject, "Meet Screenlet… I built a Chrome extension that wraps any website in a real……", which got about 88 upvotes and 53 comments, around August. The post was later shown by Reddit as a "related" suggestion next to many SideProject posts. He also posted in r/micro_saas and r/saasbuild. Users went from 380 to 648 in September, which lines up in time with this post (an inference).

**Nothing else took off.** On Product Hunt, "ScreenLet – Screen Studio-like recordings, for any OS — $29 lifetime" got 6 votes and 1 comments, ranking #48 for the day. The official Instagram account posted a demo video, and he tweeted on X, but almost no one else mentions it there. It can't be found on TikTok, and no media has written about it. He also submitted it to SideProjectors, ComingUp and TinyLaunch.

**SEO got the most care.** The website has three comparison pages: /screen-studio-alternative, /loom-alternative and /free-screen-recorder. The Screen Studio page is titled "A Screen Studio alternative that runs in Chrome," opens with "Love Screen Studio's cinematic zoom but stuck without a Mac?", has a comparison table below, and ends with "Pay once, no subscription." People searching "screen studio alternative" arrive ready to pay, so the direction is right. How many visitors these pages brought in can't be seen from outside.

**The free-tier watermark.** Exported videos carry screenlet.org in the corner, so every demo video shared is an ad. The mechanism exists; its effect can't be verified.

### Where the money comes from: a $29 one-time purchase, plus AI credits

| Tier | Pricing | Item |
|---|---|---|
| Free | $0 | All features, exports watermarked |
| Lifetime | $29 one-time | No watermark, up to 3 devices, includes 25 AI video credits |
| AI video top-up | per credit | Buy more after using up the 25 credits |

(screenlet.org pricing page, payments via Dodo Payments)

The extension store doesn't show revenue, and the author has never published it. How many of the 775 users paid $29 is unknown from outside; even at a 5% conversion rate, the estimate is just over a thousand dollars. The problem with one-time purchases is that each user pays once. The AI video top-up is the author's way to create a repeat purchase.

### Who it's competing with: this spot has had an owner for 2024 years

| Competitors | Where | Scale | Versus Screenlet |
|---|---|---|---|
| Screen Studio | Mac desktop | The industry benchmark, from 2025-10, subscription at $29/month or $9/month (billed yearly) | Mac only, records the full screen |
| Cursorful | Chrome + desktop | 50k users, 1,099 ratings, featured in the store, listed 2024-07 | Auto-zoom pointer, Pro at $79 one-time, no device frames |
| Zumie | Chrome | 2,000 users | Auto-zoom + click effects |
| Captist, Poindeo, Pointerful, Cursorfly, Zoomflow, Videoyards, Cursora, etc. | Chrome | 100–1,000 users each | All are "Screen Studio-style auto-zoom," listed one after another from 2025-07 to 2026-02 |
| CleanShot 5 Studio Mode, Screenhance, ScreenKite | Mac / web | Not verified | CleanShot September built the same capability into its own Mac tool |
| Mobile Simulator, Screenshot.rocks, PostSpark | Chrome | 300 to 1M users | Only device-frame screenshots, no video recording |

(Chrome Web Store user count, early November)

Screen Studio's move to subscriptions benefited Cursorful the most. It launched a year earlier, carries the Featured badge, and has 60 times Screenlet's users. None of the dozen or so plugins that followed has passed 2,000 users. Screenlet's one real point of difference is realistic device frames plus a mobile layout, which makes its videos better suited for landing pages and social posts. But that hasn't translated into growth so far, and it can only record web pages, not desktop apps.

### If it were you

**D: Worth knowing about, but not recommended to follow.** This plugin hasn't broken out on its own yet. The "Screen Studio in the browser" niche it sits in has already been claimed by Cursorful, with more than a dozen similar tools queued behind it. Building another one will most likely make it the 15th or so.

**Who it's for** : people already building demo video or product mockup tools who want to add "realistic device frames + mobile-layout rendering" as a feature; or people with an audience of SaaS and indie product readers who can push the tool directly to them. **Who it's not for** : people hoping a new auto-zoom screen recording plugin will pull users away from Cursorful in the Chrome Web Store. Everyone has the features; when you search the store, you'll find pages of results, and your rating count and Featured status can't catch up.

**How to do it** : if you do build it, don't make "yet another Screen Studio alternative." Build only the half that Screenlet does differently: batch-generate device mockups for App Store screenshots, landing page hero sections, and vertical short videos, with mobile layouts, multiple sizes, and multiple languages exported at once, sold to teams that need to ship apps and run ads. The more useful lesson is its playbook: watch for the month a desktop tool raises prices or moves to subscription, then launch a one-time-purchase cross-platform alternative and publish an "X alternative" comparison page the same day.

**How to get users** : search is more reliable than posting. Screenlet's experience shows that the founder posting on Reddit, LinkedIn, and Product Hunt can bring in a few hundred users, not tens of thousands. Replacement pages have to go live while search demand is at its peak, and the free tier should keep the watermark so exported videos spread the product for you.

**Timing** : Screen Studio's switch to subscription was more than a year ago, and this wave of alternative demand has already been split up. The next window will depend on other desktop tools raising prices.

**Signs this read is wrong** : Screenlet passes 5,000 users in the next month or two, or strangers start writing long store reviews praising the device frames specifically. That would show "mockups + demo videos" alone is enough to make people switch tools, and a better version is worth building seriously.

## Screenlet – Device Mockups & Demo Videos(chrome_cdefecgpidbfmcifjecnbhldndpflhod)

In one line: a Chrome extension that wraps the current web page in MacBook / iPhone / iPad / Studio Display device frames, exports mockup images with transparent backgrounds, or records 1080p demo videos (MP4/WebM) with a camera bubble, microphone voiceover, and click-triggered auto-zoom. The free tier carries a screenlet.org watermark. A one-time $29 purchase removes it and includes 25 "AI video" credits.

**The verdict first: it hasn't really taken off yet.** After more than 5 months on the store it has 775 users and 6 ratings. Growth has come from the founder posting on Reddit, LinkedIn, and Instagram himself, plus dozens of launch directories. The pitch is "Screen Studio's features, but in the browser, on every platform, for a one-time $29." The timing caught the wave when Screen Studio 2025-10 went subscription-only and many users, put off by the price, went looking for alternatives. But Cursorful (50k users, store Featured) already holds that spot a year ahead, and more than a dozen similar extensions are in the market. Screenlet's only real difference is "realistic device frames + web pages rendered at mobile layout," and so far that hasn't produced clear growth.

Scale: averaging 4–6 new users per day, and all 6 reviews are five stars. Sample too small to judge real reputation.

### 2. Product and pricing

- Features (store description, website [www.screenlet.org/](https://www.screenlet.org/)): device frames for MacBook Pro 16, MacBook Air, Dell Latitude, Studio Display, iPhone 17 Pro Max, and iPad, with simulated macOS / Windows / iOS browser chrome. **The phone frame loads the site's real mobile layout.** Screenshots export as transparent PNG, with adjustable background, corner radius, and shadow. Screen recording supports a camera bubble, microphone, and 16:9 / 1:1 / 9:16 aspect ratios, and records click positions to add automatic zoom, which you can fine-tune in the editor. Everything runs locally: no sign-up, no uploads.

- Later added an "AI video maker": an AI agent operates the website and generates the demo video (the TinyLaunch page says "or let the AI agent demo it for you"; the pricing page charges per AI video). It runs on the same foundation as the founder's other product, ChromePilot (an AI browser agent).

- Pricing: Free $0 (with watermark) / Lifetime $29 one-time (no watermark, up to 3 devices, includes 25 AI videos, with add-on packs available afterward). Checkout runs through Dodo Payments. Revenue sources = one-time lifetime purchases + add-on AI video credits.

### 3. Competitors

| Competitors | Platform | Launched | Scale | How Screenlet differs from Screen Studio |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Screen Studio | macOS desktop | Around 2022 | Industry benchmark; from 2025-10 onward, subscription only, $29/month or $9/month (billed annually) (per the founder Adam Pietrasiak on X, [x.com/pie6k/status/1973321084641358308](https://x.com/pie6k/status/1973321084641358308)) | Works only on Mac, requires a subscription, and records the full screen. Screenlet is a browser extension, usable on all platforms, $29 one-time purchase, but it can only record web pages. |
| Cursorful | Chrome + desktop | 2024-07-12 | 50k users, 1,099 reviews, and it was featured in the store (chromestore library; r/SideProject post "got Featured on the Chrome Web Store") | The leader in this slot, focused on automatic zoom, Pro $79 one-time purchase; no real device frames |
| Zumie | Chrome | 2025-10-27 | 2,000 users / 23 reviews | Auto zoom + click effects, no device frames |
| Captist | Chrome | 2026-02-08 | 1,000 / 16 | Auto-zoom screen recording |
| Poindeo / Pointerful / Cursorfly (open source) / Zoomflow / Videoyards / Cursora / Recordio | Chrome | 2025-07 to 2026-02 | Users range from 100–1,000 | All are "Screen Studio-style auto-zoom" extensions, most without device frames |
| Screenhance, Screenify Studio, ScreenKite, CleanShot 5 Studio Mode (2026-09) | Web / desktop | 2026 | Not verified | Web or native Mac tools in the same space; CleanShot is a major Mac tool that added the same capability |
| Mobile Simulator(webmobilefirst) | Chrome | 2020-05 | 1M users | Make responsive previews and device-frame screenshots, not demo videos |
| Screenshot.rocks, PostSpark, Website Mockup, SimuLovice, GoFullSnap | Chrome | 2020–2026 | 300–2,000 | Static device mockup screenshots, can't record video |
| Loom, Screencastify, Awesome Screenshot, Scrnli | Chrome | 2014–2020 | 1M–9M | General screen recording, no zoom or device frames |

**Verdict: this category is already crowded.** Our library alone has more than 10 auto-zoom recording extensions, and the leader Cursorful has 60 times Screenlet's users. Screenlet didn't pioneer anything; it just layered "device mockups" on top of "auto zoom."

### 4. Where users came from (growth tactics)

| Channel | Evidence | Confirmed? |
|---|---|---|
| Reddit organic posts | An r/SideProject post, "Meet Screenlet… I built a Chrome extension that wraps any website in a real…", got about 88–89 upvotes and 53 comments, posted around 2026-08. | TikTok / ads / media | TikHub search for "screenlet" returns nothing; no media coverage found | None found |

### 5. Why it grew to 775

1. **The demand for a Screen Studio alternative is real, and the timing is right** : Screen Studio 2025-10 dropped its one-time purchase and moved to a subscription, and many people on r/macapps complained about the price hike. Google has a large body of articles on "screen studio alternative." The Screenlet landing page leads with "Screen Studio Alternative for Chrome… Pay once, no subscription."

2. **The founder posted it himself, and one Reddit post became a small hit** (about 89 upvotes, 53 comments). This lines up in time with users growing from 380 to 648 after September (inferred).

3. **Free, no sign-up, all local** , so there's no barrier to installing. Exports carry a watermark, which means every exported video advertises the product (the mechanism is confirmed; effectiveness unverified).

4. **Fast iteration** : 5 months, 6 releases, version now v8.x, plus the AI video feature.

### 6. Differentiation

- Real device frames (with simulated system chrome), and the phone frame renders the site's real mobile layout. Cursorful, Zumie, and other auto-zoom extensions don't have this, and static mockup tools (Screenshot.rocks, PostSpark) can't record video. Screenlet sits at the intersection of both: **"device mockups + demo video recording in one extension"** .

- Priced at a $29 one-time purchase, cheaper than Cursorful's $79 and Screen Studio's subscription.

- Is this why it took off? **Not really.** The differentiation is real, but so far it has only earned a few hundred users. The main drivers are the founder's self-promotion and search demand for Screen Studio alternatives, and most of that demand went to Cursorful. Also, recording only the web page itself is a limitation: it can't record desktop apps.

### 7. Visibility and copycats

- Visibility: **few people know about it yet.** No media coverage, no big accounts retweeting it. The X corpus has 0 posts, PH has 6 votes, revenue isn't public, and it's not on TrustMRR.

- Copycats: none clearly identified. Around the same time, others built "web inside device frames" (Website Mockup with 2026-06-12,316 users; GoFullSnap with 2026-06-27,1,000 users), but these look independently built, and they only do static screenshots.

### 8. What others can learn

- "Bring a Mac-only desktop tool into a Chrome extension": instantly covers Windows / Linux / ChromeOS, skips code signing and notarization, and the extension store itself is the distribution channel.

- Watch for the moment big companies switch to subscriptions, launch a one-time-purchase alternative, then build out X-alternative SEO pages.

- The free version adds a watermark so exports spread the product for you; selling AI credits creates repeat revenue beyond the one-time purchase.

- Lesson on the downside: this niche was taken by Cursorful within 2024 year (Featured + 50k users). Latecomers that add just one feature rarely break through in the store.

### 9. Still unclear

- Paid conversion and revenue are completely unknown ($29 × how many people).

- The exact date and install count from the Reddit post (Reddit blocks scraping).

- The 90-day extops curve for the recall card; we don't have verified data for it.

- How much organic traffic the SEO pages actually bring in.

- Whether anyone uses the AI video feature and how well add-ons sell.
