# Fill your Stream Deck keys with the video you're watching: You Controller, a solo-built plugin that lives on the Elgato store and charges $15

**What it is** A Chrome extension that works with the Stream Deck keypad. It shows the YouTube or Twitch video you're watching, or the Spotify cover art, live on the keys, and lets you control playback even when the tab is in the background.

**Why it took off** Stream Deck users had wanted to control regular YouTube for years, but system media keys stop working when the tab is in the background. It added background control and let the keys play the video directly, so the effect is obvious at a glance. One person filled the Elgato store with a set of free profiles by model, grabbing the related-plugin slots, then earned money from a free low-res tier and a $15 one-time purchase.

**C** **How you could follow it** Don't build another one on Elgato. Copy the playbook instead: go to less crowded hardware stores such as Logi Marketplace or Loupedeck, make a visually obvious feature that carries an ordinary tool, split free profiles by model to win recommendation slots, and deliberately downgrade the free tier to push people toward the one-time purchase.

C grade: the playbook is worth learning, but this spot on Stream Deck is already held by a solo developer who ships very fast, with a user base of only a few thousand and estimated lifetime revenue of a few thousand dollars. On other hardware stores the audience is smaller, and you'd have to keep fixing bugs as YouTube and Twitch change. Few people know about it yet

You Controller is a Chrome extension, but it does nothing on its own. It's the other half of the Elgato Stream Deck plugin "YouTube, Twitch & Spotify - You Controller": it reads the player out of browser tabs and sends the video to the Stream Deck keys. It went live on the Chrome Web Store in July, hit 632 early users in September, peaked at 4K in late October, and is back down to 2K now. Almost all users came in through Elgato's plugin store. Worth studying for how it played a hardware store. Building another one like it isn't worth the effort.

### A review complaining about the price

In 2026 Oct 17, user Adam Tucker left a review on the Chrome Store: "Great plugin. I love the lava lamp and equalizer, but I only use the one PRO feature, and $15 is a bit steep for me :)"

That review captures the product. The user has a Stream Deck, a small keypad costing tens to a hundred-plus dollars, where every key is a tiny screen. You Controller lets those screens show the YouTube or Twitch video you're watching; it fills the keys with album art when Spotify plays; and when nothing is playing it can show animations like a lava lamp or campfire. The free version gives only 8 frames and 36-pixel previews; for 30 frames and 144 pixels per key, you pay $15 for a one-time purchase.

In Sep 29, another user, Victor Lopes, complained that after an update "the buttons no longer show the video, which I always thought was cool." Developer Andrew Dremuh replied three days later: "Pushing video to the keys is the core feature, and that shouldn't happen," and left a Discord and email for him to reach out. Users care about that picture on the key.

### It solves an old problem

Controlling YouTube from a Stream Deck has been requested for a long time. On the r/elgato subreddit, posts like "how do I pause YouTube on my second screen with the Stream Deck while gaming full screen" or "controlling YouTube while playing games" have appeared repeatedly since 2020. The usual replies are two workarounds: the system media keys, or BarRaider's Super Macro to simulate shortcuts. Both share the same flaw: once the browser tab is in the background, you lose control, and you can't like, subscribe or clip.

Elgato has an official YouTube plugin, but it's for streamers: going live, ending a stream, live chat. It doesn't handle playback while you watch. The official Spotify plugin only covers the desktop app and shows the cover on a single key.

You Controller's approach is to split into two halves: a Chrome extension reads the player in the tab, and a Stream Deck plugin listens on the local 127.0.0.1, connecting the two. The official site FAQ says the keys "act directly on the player itself, not the page," so they still work when the tab is hidden or the window is minimized, "which is exactly what most integrations fail to do." It offers 27 actions in total: frame stepping, A-B looping, playback speed, like, subscribe, captions, Twitch follow and clip; on the Stream Deck+ you can also adjust volume with the dial.

On control alone there are plenty of alternatives. We found no second product that makes the keys play the video directly.

### Where users come from: the Elgato store, not the Chrome Store

The first line of the Chrome Store page reads "Requires an Elgato Stream Deck," and the first install step is to get the plugin from the Elgato Marketplace. The 3.5 version from Nov 2 added a prompt in the plugin that sends you to the right extension store for your browser. So the Chrome user numbers are Elgato users who came across.

On the Elgato store it does three things:

- **Profiles split by model.** The developer's @dan page lists, besides the plugin itself, a set of free "official profile for the You Controller plugin" listings: YouTube for Stream Deck XL, MK.2, Mini, Neo; Twitch for XL; Spotify for Mini, one listing per model and platform, mostly published around Oct 5. One plugin thus shows up several more times in search and recommendations.

- **Taking recommendation slots.** On related plugins' pages such as YouTube Music Desktop Connector and YouTube Music Browser Control, it appears under "You might also like"; on its own plugin page, 4 of the 8 recommendations in that section are its own profiles (Elgato Marketplace, 11-06). These recommendations come from the marketplace algorithm, not bought placements.

- **Bring the old users over.** It was previously called "YouTube Controller." At v3 it was renamed and a new listing was opened, and the old one is now dead. The official FAQ says license keys for one-time purchases from old users still work, but you have to manually install the new version and delete the old one, because the two plugins fight over the same port.

Outside the store there's almost no buzz: the developer's YouTube channel has 31 subscribers, 4 videos, and 1,174 total views in all; X doesn't turn up anything for it; Elgato October's "What's Hot on Marketplace" didn't feature it either. The official FAQ is written as Q&A like "Is You Controller a YouTube controller for the Elgato Stream Deck?", which is why it lands on page one for "stream deck youtube plugin" searches.

User curve (third-party extension stats site extops): Sep 1 632, Sep 25 1k, Oct 19 2k, Oct 24 3k, Oct 25 4k, Oct 28 back to 3k, and from Nov 1 on it has stayed at 2k. The Chrome Web Store user count is approximate and roughly reflects active installs, so this looks more like a burst of installs followed by losing more than half of them. The timing overlaps with the macOS release, the Profile push, and users being asked to migrate manually. Which one drove it can't be confirmed.

Chrome Web Store rating 4.73, with only 11 reviews (11-06). One Jul 14 five-star review, "The beast stream deck plugin!!!", is signed ANDREW DREMUH, the same name the developer used in replies; two five-star reviews in Oct 5 are signed Moni Crypto and Moni CryptoSecondary. Readers can judge how much of the rating is padding.

### Where the money comes from

Pricing as listed on the official site (danstudio.dev/youcontroller, 11-06):

| Tier | Pricing | What you get |
|---|---|---|
| Free | $0 | All control keys, video previews at 8 fps and 36 px, knobs |
| Watch an ad | Free | 2 hours of PRO, no card, no signup |
| Lifetime PRO | $15 one-time | 30 fps, 144 px, 27 actions, bound to one computer, transferable; 14-day refund |
| Patreon | From $2/month | PRO works on multiple computers during the subscription, plus Discord VIP and beta access |

It also accepts crypto tips, and new installs get a one-week free trial. The one-time price in the v2 era was $10; it is now $15.

The free tier is deliberately low-res so you can see what you're missing. Stream Deck users have already paid for the hardware and are used to spending a few dollars on plugins in the store (comparable plugins there go for $2.48 and $5), so a $15 one-time purchase isn't a hard sell. But the audience is small: the official site claims "Elgato downloads 2K+, Chrome users 3,000+." Even if one in ten pays, cumulative revenue is only a few thousand dollars (estimate, unverified).

### Who it's competing with

| Competitors | Where | Scale | Compared with You Controller |
|---|---|---|---|
| Elgato's official YouTube / Spotify plugins | Elgato Marketplace | Official | The YouTube one handles livestreams, not playback; the Spotify one covers desktop only and takes up one key for album art |
| Browser Media Controls | Chrome, Firefox, Windows app | Chrome 584 users | General-purpose browser media control, cross-computer, open source; no video output |
| YTDeck Bridge | Chrome | 63 users, rated 3.0 | Basic YouTube playback only |
| Playback / Now Playing - Windows | Elgato Marketplace | Unknown, €4.99 / €9.99 | Uses Windows media session control, only thumbnails and titles, no likes or clips |
| Current Media, Now Playing & Album Art, LyricStrip | Elgato Marketplace / open source | Unknown | Shows only music album art, at most a single large mosaic, not video |
| Super Macro, multimedia keys | Official actions / open source | Big | Simulates keyboard shortcuts, which break when the tab is in the background |

"Controlling YouTube" is a low bar, anyone can build it. The real difficulty is slicing video into tiles while accounting for the gaps between keys, pushing it live onto the keys, and shipping fast as one person (3.0 to 3.5 took about 7 weeks; it supports Windows and macOS, and works in Chrome, Edge, Firefox, Brave, Arc, and Opera). I haven't seen anyone else doing "video on the keys."

### If it were you

**Verdict** : C. You can learn from it, but copying it won't pay. That spot on Stream Deck is already taken by someone who moved fast, and the whole audience is only a few thousand people.

**Who it fits** : people who already own a Stream Deck, Loupedeck, Logitech MX Creative Console, or a similar small keypad with screens, who can write desktop plugins and browser extensions, and who want a small, stable side project without expecting it to become big.

**Who it doesn't fit** : anyone aiming for tens or hundreds of thousands of users; anyone who doesn't want to keep chasing YouTube, Twitch, and Spotify page changes and fixing bugs (the October negative review was from an update that broke the core feature); anyone who only knows Chrome extensions and doesn't want to touch hardware SDKs.

**How to do it** : don't build another You Controller on Elgato. Learn the playbook instead: find a hardware ecosystem where users have already paid for the device and competition in the store is still thin, build a visually obvious feature, and surface an ordinary utility from it, with the browser extension serving only as the data pipe. In the Logi Marketplace (MX Creative Console) and Loupedeck store, the YouTube-related plugins currently mostly control the YouTube Music desktop app (Loupedeck store, Logi Marketplace, 11-06). I haven't seen player-level control, let alone video output. You could also swap the content and use the same architecture to put meetings, livestream dashboards, or stock quotes on the keys.

**How to get users** : copy its approach on Elgato. Beyond the plugin, split out a series of free Profiles by device model and use case to win search and recommendation slots; the first line of the store page should state clearly "requires [specific hardware]"; keep the free tier low-res and use ad-watching to unlock 2 hours of PRO and a one-week trial, which leads people to the one-time purchase. A 15-second screen recording of "video playing on the keys" beats any copy.

**Deadline** : there's no hard window. This kind of opportunity won't shut suddenly, but once someone takes a spot in a hardware store, latecomers struggle to break into the recommendation slots, so the earlier you roll out Profiles in a new hardware store, the better.

**Signs you've misread it** : ① the hardware store has been live for two or three months and downloads haven't reached a thousand, meaning that hardware's user base can't carry it; ② the free users are plentiful but almost none pay for clearer video, meaning "visible features" only bring in new users and don't convert; ③ YouTube or Twitch changes the player and you're fixing things two or three times a month, or the hardware vendor ships its own official equivalent plugin, and the business is over.

## Why You Controller (Chrome extension dondglodiiaohkpkmgjmfncglnokhppc) took off

### Bottom line

It isn't a standalone Chrome product. It's the companion to the Elgato Stream Deck plugin "YouTube, Twitch & Spotify - You Controller," so you need the Stream Deck plugin for it to do anything. Users come from the Elgato Marketplace, not the Chrome Web Store. It got traction for two reasons. First, the product does something competitors didn't: it slices the playing video frame by frame and fills the whole Stream Deck key block (up to 30 FPS, with gap compensation between keys), and it keeps controlling the video when the tab is in the background. Second, one indie developer pushed distribution inside the Elgato Marketplace: beyond the plugin, they put up a set of "official Profile" listings by device model × platform, and used the store's "You might also like" slot to appear on pages for related plugins like YouTube Music and Spotify. Its growth is capped by the Stream Deck hardware audience, almost no one has covered it, and no one has copied it.

**How to read the curve** : September is a linear climb of a dozen-odd users a day; in mid-October it jumped from 2k to 4k within a week, then fell back to 2k a week later. Store user counts are approximate and roughly track active installs, so this looks more like a concentrated wave of installs followed by heavy churn. It overlaps with these events: 3.4.x plus macOS support, 10-05 shipped per-device Profiles, and the old v2 listing was delisted, forcing older users to migrate manually (see below). Which one caused it can't be confirmed.

### 2. Competitors: who else does the same thing

"Controlling a browser's YouTube / Twitch / Spotify from Stream Deck" is already crowded; but "putting the video itself on the keys" has no second competitor that I could find.

| Competitors | Where | Launched | Scale | How it differs from You Controller |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Elgato's official Spotify plugin | Big-vendor feature (Elgato Marketplace) | Already around | Official, with the heaviest promotion (official promo video on YouTube) | Only handles the Spotify desktop app, showing cover art on a single key; no YouTube / Twitch and no video |
| Elgato's official YouTube plugin | Big-company features | Already around | Official | Handles YouTube **livestream** control (go live / end stream / chat), not playback controls while watching videos |
| Browser Media Controls(Teddy96Dev) | Chrome + Firefox + Elgato + Windows app + iCUE | Chrome 2026-01-23 | Chrome 584 users | General browser media-session control that also works across computers; doesn't mirror video frames; open source |
| YTDeck Bridge | Chrome + Stream Deck | Chrome 2026-03-12 | 63 users, rated 3.0 | Only basic YouTube playback controls; in the store it's listed under "related" for You Controller |
| Playback - Windows / Now Playing - Windows(streamdeck.sh,Peeter Tomberg) | Elgato Marketplace | 2026 | Unknown | Runs on the Windows media session, paid €4.99 / €9.99; shows only thumbnails and titles, and can only control what the system exposes (no like, clip, or frame-by-frame) |
| Current Media (Now Playing), Now Playing & Album Art (GRAMSHIFT), LyricStrip, Clef | Elgato Marketplace / open source | 2025–2026 | Unknown | Shows cover art (up to 2×2 tiled into one large image; LyricStrip can fill the whole block). All are music covers, not video |
| ytm-desktop controller, YouTube Music Desktop Connector, YouTube Music Browser Control | Elgato Marketplace | Already around | Unknown | YouTube Music only |
| BarRaider Super Macro / system hotkeys / media keys | Elgato official actions, open source | Already around | Big | Simulates keyboard shortcuts, which stop working when the tab is in the background; r/elgato on Reddit has people repeatedly asking for a plugin that controls regular YouTube |
| Meeting Controls for Stream Deck, PiP Stream Deck Gateway | Chrome | 2024–2025 | 3k / 1k | Same "Chrome extension + Stream Deck" companion model, but it does different things |

Sources: chromestore library item table (searched "stream deck"), Elgato Marketplace search, streamdeck.sh/guides/control-youtube-from-stream-deck, summaries of Reddit r/elgato search results.

**Conclusion** : "control" itself is not scarce. What's scarce is the instantly legible visual of "the keys are the video," plus the engineering that lets controls work from background tabs (per its FAQ, keys act on the player itself rather than the page, so it works even with the window minimized, "which is where most integrations fail"). In the Chrome store, it's among the most-used "Stream Deck companion" extensions, in the same tier as Meeting Controls (3k).

### 3. Growth tactics: where users come from

| Channel | Evidence | Confirmed? |
|---|---|---|
| Elgato Marketplace is the main entry point | The Chrome store page's first line is "Requires an Elgato Stream Deck," and the first install step is to get the Marketplace plugin; the 3.5 version of the plugin added a setup wizard that sends users to the right extension store for their browser | Yes |
| A matrix of Profiles on Marketplace | The @dan page lists a batch of "official profiles for the You Controller plugin": YouTube for Stream Deck XL / MK.2 / Mini / Neo, Twitch for XL, Spotify for Mini, and more. Each device × platform has its own listing, released in a cluster around 2026-10-05 | Yes |
| Marketplace "You might also like" recommendation slots | Search summaries show that the recommendation sections on pages such as ytm-desktop controller, YouTube Music Browser Control, YouTube Music Desktop Connector, and the Elgato YouTube plugin include You Controller copy | Yes (the placement is algorithmic, not bought) |
| Migrating users from the old product | The predecessor was "YouTube Controller" (v1–v2, with 1.1.1 and 1.3.2 update posts on Patreon). In v3 it was renamed and given a new listing. The old listing (v2.3.3,2026-08-27) is now 404, and the official site asks old users to manually install the new one; buyout keys still work | Yes |
| Elgato editorial picks | Not featured in the 2026 October "What's Hot on Marketplace" | No |
| Its own YouTube | Channel @d.andrew.n has 31 subscribers and 1,174 views total across 4 videos (7-01's Shorts got 285 views, 9-28's setup tutorial got 429 views, 10-08 got 300 views) | Yes, but very small |
| X / Reddit / TikTok / media | x-radar finds no DAndrewNX or product name in the last ~120 days; TikTok search for "stream deck youtube plugin" only shows Elgato official and other creators; no launch post found on Reddit (Reddit post bodies couldn't be fetched, only search result summaries were checked) | None found |
| SEO | The official site's FAQ is written as questions like "Is You Controller a YouTube controller for the Elgato Stream Deck?", and the headline is "YouTube, Twitch & Spotify Controller for Elgato Stream Deck". Jina and Exa searches for "stream deck youtube plugin" both put the official site on page one | Partial (rankings are there, unclear how much traffic they bring) |
| Discord / Patreon community | The official site and plugin both link to Discord and Patreon (Discord VIP role, beta builds) | Yes (size unknown) |

### 4. Why it took off

1. **The visuals are the ad** : video playing on keys is instantly clear from a screenshot or short clip, so store images and Marketplace preview images are enough to persuade. Competitors can at most tile a cover across 2×2 keys.

2. **Solves an old pain point** : r/elgato on Reddit keeps asking how to control regular YouTube. Existing options are hotkeys or the system media session, which stop working when the tab goes to the background, and can't do likes, subscriptions, or clipping. Through the architecture of "Chrome extension reads the player + plugin listens on the 127.0.0.1," it does all of these.

3. **Rides on a well-funded hardware audience** : Stream Deck users have already spent $80–250 on hardware and are used to buying $5–20 plugins on Marketplace, so a $15 one-time purchase is an easy sell. Marketplace recommendation slots and Profile listings provide free exposure.

4. **Covering a lot of Marketplace surface area** : 1 plugins, plus a string of Profiles split by device × platform, which show up repeatedly in searches and recommendations for YouTube, Spotify, and Twitch.

5. **Fast iteration, broad platform coverage** : 3.0 → 3.5 took roughly 7 weeks; supports YouTube, Twitch, and Spotify, on Windows, macOS, and Linux, with Chrome, Edge, Brave, Arc, Opera, Vivaldi, and Firefox plus Safari in beta; Stream Deck+ dials and Neo info bars are supported. Each addition covers another slice of hardware users.

6. **Complete monetization ladder** : the free tier is deliberately a low-res 8 FPS preview, so people can see it could look better. Above that are a one-week trial, 2 hours for watching an ad, a $15 one-time purchase, and a Patreon subscription, so users with different willingness to pay each have a tier.

### 5. Differentiation, and whether that's why it broke out

Differentiation: (a) video or cover art is framed across the full key block, up to 30 FPS / 144px, with gap compensation; (b) it still controls the player when the tab is in the background or the window is minimized; (c) one set of keys follows the active tab across YouTube, Twitch, and Spotify without switching Profiles; (d) 27 platform-native actions (clipping, A-B loop, frame-by-frame, like / subscribe / follow). Is that the reason it works? **Yes** . (a) is why users install it and share it, and (b) and (d) are why they stay and pay. But "controlling YouTube" has a low bar and many competitors; the real moat is the engineering of streaming video onto keys, plus one person's speed of maintenance.

### 6. Visibility and copycats

- Revenue isn't public (not on TrustMRR, and no one has posted earnings); no media or large X accounts have covered it; no Elgato editorial pick.

- Copycats: nobody has built "video covering every key." Similar tools like YTDeck Bridge and Browser Media Controls only do basic controls, and they came out no later than this one.

- Verdict: few people know about it yet. It's only spreading within a small circle of Stream Deck users.

### 7. What others can learn

- **Ride the hardware ecosystem's store** : Elgato Marketplace (plus iCUE / XENEON Edge, Loupedeck, Razer and similar) has users with high willingness to pay and less competition than the Chrome Web Store. The Chrome extension is only the "data pipe," and the store page clearly says it must be paired with X.

- **Profile / template matrix** : the same plugin is split into several free listings by device model × use case, taking up search and featured slots.

- **One demo-worthy feature** (video on a key) used to drive an ordinary utility feature (playback control).

- **The free tier is deliberately downgraded to show the difference** (8 FPS), plus watch ads for temporary PRO as a step toward paying.

### 8. Still unclear

- Why it went from 10/19–10/25 to 4k: was it the macOS version, the Profile release, v2 users forced to migrate, or some creator or post? No direct evidence found.

- Real paying users and revenue: no public data. The official site says Elgato downloads are 2k+, which can't be verified.

- When the product first launched: a Patreon post says v1.x came before 2026-07, but the exact date is unverified. chrome-stats shows a hidden "Youtube Controller" entry, possibly an older version of the extension.

- The Reddit post body was blocked from scraping, so whether the developer posted their own launch thread is unverified.
