A 5000-user WhatsApp extension was pulled from the store, so its developer relisted it under a new account
What it is A WhatsApp Web sales back office installed in Chrome, for small businesses in Latin America and Spain: chat board, tag reminders, quick replies, bulk messaging, auto-reply bots, and ChatGPT-assisted replies, at $15 a month.
Why it took off The new extension's growth is mostly existing customers moving over: after the old extension was pulled by Google, paying users had to reinstall the new one. The old extension reached 5000 users thanks to Spanish-language support, a $15 price point, 191 Spanish YouTube tutorials, and comparison articles.
CHow you could follow it Don't copy Whato itself. If you know a market that has no local-language major player yet, do what it did early on: use a white-label engine to ship a native-branded app, publish native-language tutorials and comparison content, keep to features that are unlikely to get flagged for violations, keep accounts and payments outside the plugin, and have a backup developer account ready.

Whato is a Spanish-language WhatsApp Web sales extension. It was listed on the Chrome Web Store in Sep 29 and grew to over 700 users in 5 weeks, with a curve flat as a ruler. It looks like a new product slowly growing, but it isn't: it's an old extension that has existed since 2024, reaching 5000 users by February. After Google pulled it, its developer relisted it under a new developer account and moved old customers back one by one. What's worth looking at is how it reached 5000 users in the Spanish market, and how it survived being pulled.
"Temporarily not on the Chrome Store"
Whato's website has a page not linked from the menu, whato.app/instalacion. Its first line reads: "Our extension is temporarily not on the Chrome Web Store. Don't worry, you can install it manually in a few steps, and it works the same as before." Below is a six-step guide: download whato-extension.zip, unzip it, open chrome://extensions, turn on Developer mode, click "Load unpacked," and select the folder.
This page is for existing paying users. The old extension (developer credited as Francisco López / Whato LLC) now shows "This item is not available" on the Chrome Store. The extension checker site from security firm Koi labels it "Critical / Malware" and "Removed from Marketplace," listing problem versions up to 3.0.2.43. Koi's own code analysis, however, says "no obvious malicious behavior"; the red flag mainly comes from its use of declarativeNetRequest to modify security request headers on WhatsApp Web. WhatsApp bulk-messaging extensions are often flagged for exactly this kind of header modification and automated messaging, and Whato probably ran into that (inference; Google hasn't published a reason).
Store removal and manual installs aren't a long-term fix. In Sep 29, a new extension with the same name and the same one-line description ("Whato CRM: the Chrome extension that drives your marketing and sales on WhatsApp") was listed, published by Wapitalia. That's the same team's account from 2023 years ago, and it also hosts two small tools for bulk-sending WhatsApp messages via Excel/Google Sheets: one with 1000 users, the other with over 700.
What it is
Installed in Chrome, opening WhatsApp Web adds a sales back office for small businesses:
- Drag chats onto a board, sorted into stages like "Interested," "Awaiting reply," and "Closed";
- Tag contacts, write notes, set reminders, and schedule messages;
- Quick replies, bulk messaging, keyword-based auto-reply bots, and workflow automation;
- Use ChatGPT to draft, rewrite, and translate replies;
- Syncs with Google Calendar, connects to n8n and Google Sheets via webhook.
There's a single price tier (whato.app/precios, 11-06): $15 a month, or $139 a year. One WhatsApp number can be used on 4 devices, with a free 3-day trial that doesn't require a card. Payment goes through Stripe on the website; the extension itself is free to install. The target audience is stated plainly: sole traders in Latin America and Spain, and small businesses that take orders over WhatsApp.
The new extension's 5 weeks: moving, not growing
Numbers (from the third-party extension stats site extops, 11-06): 10-08 134 users, 10-16 303,10-24 509,11-01 716,11-06 759; the store page showed 787 that day. It adds a steady twenty to fifty a day, with no single-day jumps.
The curve is this flat because most people arriving were already its customers. After the old extension was disabled, paying users lost access and had to install the new one. Whato has 191 Spanish YouTube tutorials, a WhatsApp channel, and a support account, so it could notify them one by one. Based on the old extension's 5000 users, the new one has so far moved back only about 15% (estimate; the number of paying users and the migration rate aren't public).
The new extension's 13 ratings average 4.8. The reviews read a bit uniformly: three on one day in Oct 21, three more on another day in Oct 28, all praising features like "quick replies are the most useful" and "the board means I stop missing client messages." One says "the reminders are appealing, and it would help a lot if I could sort everything out inside WhatsApp," written in the tone of someone who hasn't used it yet. None mention switching over from the old version. This looks more like commissioned reviews (inference). It doesn't change the conclusion that users are mainly returning customers, but don't treat these 13 reviews as genuine word of mouth.
How it reached 5000 users
The old extension's user count left a series of snapshots in web archives: 2024-11 69, 2024-12 127,2025-01 207,2025-05 862,2025-06 1000,2025-11 3000,2026-02 5000. Over 15 months it grew from a few dozen to five thousand, driven by the following:
| Channel | What they did |
|---|---|
| Spanish-language YouTube tutorials | @Whatocrm with 1810 subscribers and 191 videos, one video per feature: activation, bulk messaging, bots. The top one has about 4400 views, and the installation tutorial has over 1400 views |
| SEO blog | Comparison pages like "WhatsMarketing alternatives" and "Leadsales vs Wati" are everywhere. One team even wrote a review page for their own other product, WhaZiper. October also shipped a batch of long-tail posts: n8n, Sheets, and "no API" tutorials. |
| Free utilities | WhatsApp link generator, QR codes, website buttons, message template generator, pulling search traffic |
| Directory sites and sponsored content | G2, listed on Capterra, sponsored post on a Peruvian news site |
| Social media | TikTok @whatocrm with 525 followers and 90 videos, very small reach |
No paid ad records found, which doesn't mean they didn't run any.
The selling points are really just two: Spanish, and cheap. The big players in the category are either English (WAPlus CRM 70k users, Cooby 20k) or Brazilian Portuguese (ZapVoice 50k, WaSpeed 30k, waTidy 20k). Leadsales, Wati, and Kommo go through WhatsApp's official Business API, which requires approval and charges per conversation, which is too heavy for a Mexican sole trader selling clothes over WhatsApp. Whato's blog has posts specifically titled "you can do it without the API," with pricing anchored at $15.
Functionally, it has nothing of its own.
Whato's feature list, the "one price for everything" line, and the "7-day free trial" claim are almost word-for-word identical to WA WorkFlow / WorkFlow CRM, built by an Indian team. The new extension connects to workflow-crm.com at runtime. In the external addresses Koi found in the old extension's code, there is a cloud storage bucket belonging to WA WorkFlow, with a path starting with a phone number carrying an Indian country code. It's basically safe to conclude that Whato put a Spanish label on the WorkFlow CRM engine (an inference; neither side has said so publicly).
This supply chain is public: vendors like Morphy, lioncrm, and Wachamp all sell "WhatsApp CRM extension with your brand on it," some for as little as $189 a year. In other words, the technical barrier to building a Whato is close to zero. The hard part is the content and customer relationships within one language market.
Who's competing with it:
| Competitors | Scale (Chrome Web Store, 2026-11) | How it differs from Whato |
|---|---|---|
| WA Web Plus | 2M users | A free general-purpose enhancer, not a sales back office |
| The Premium Sender series | 200k + 70k + a pile of variants | Bulk sending only |
| WAPlus CRM | 70k | Same positioning, English, more than ten times the size |
| CRM para Vendas por WhatsApp / ZapVoice / WaSpeed | 60k / 50k / 30k | Brazilian Portuguese; Whato's Portuguese site whato.com.br goes head-to-head with it |
| Eazybe / Cooby | 30k / 20k | English, syncs with external CRMs like HubSpot |
| Leadsales / Wati / Kommo | Big | Official API, expensive, requires approval |
| WhatsApp Business has built-in labels and quick replies | full range | Free, but no kanban, bulk sending, or automation |
Nobody much is talking about it yet
No public revenue, no founder posting numbers, nothing on X, no press coverage. Just G2, a Capterra listing, and a few sponsored posts. It's known among Spanish-speaking small businesses, and nobody building products is paying attention.
If it were you
One-line take: Don't go after Whato itself. Its growth over the past 5 weeks is its existing customers moving over, and you can't get that. What's worth taking is the stretch from 2024 to 2026 years ago: putting a local-language brand on a white-label engine, using native-language tutorials and comparison articles, and reaching a few thousand users in one language and $15 a month. But the barrier to entry is too low, every vendor can be bought by anyone, and the risk of removal is real, so following this path isn't very worthwhile.
Who it suits: People who understand a non-English market (Indonesian, Turkish, Arabic, French-speaking Africa, Vietnamese) and are willing to produce native-language tutorial videos and provide support every day. Ideally, they already have a set of small business relationships with merchants who run their businesses on WhatsApp.
Who it doesn't suit: Developers who want to win on the product itself. The product here is white-labeled, so you can't win on it. People who can't handle the extension being pulled at any time, forcing customers to reinstall manually. People who want to go after the English or Brazilian Portuguese markets, where veteran players already have 20k to 70k users.
How to do it: First, check the current state of WhatsApp Web extensions in your target language and confirm there's no big local-language player. You can buy the engine white-label or write your own, but only build safe features: kanban, tags, reminders, quick replies, scheduled messages. Leave out or drop things like modifying request headers or mass bulk sending, which are the most likely to be flagged as violations. From day one, keep accounts, payments, and customer lists outside the extension (your own backend, Stripe, a WhatsApp channel, email). Prepare a clean backup developer account in advance, and a "manual install" tutorial. One price, $10 to $15 a month, with a free trial that doesn't require a card.
How to get customers: Native-language YouTube tutorials, one per feature. The official site offers a free WhatsApp link, QR code, and template generator to pull search traffic. Write comparison posts like "X alternative" and "how to do it without the official API." After the trial, use WhatsApp support plus video calls to walk users through setup one-on-one. Whato has been doing this step all along.
When it was earlier: No specific date to watch for. WhatsApp keeps adding CRM features to the Business App. The day the free official version gets a kanban and scheduled messages, the position of plugins like this among small businesses shrinks.
Signs you read it wrong: ① After six months, the trial-to-paid conversion from native-language tutorials and comparison posts is under 5%, which would mean small businesses in this market won't pay for this. ② Within six months of launch, Chrome removes the extension or users receive WhatsApp account-ban warnings, and retention drops noticeably after you remove the automation features. ③ Looking back at Whato, if the new extension still hasn't returned to 3000 users by next spring, that means removals hurt this kind of product more than expected, and the "start over with a new ID" fallback doesn't work as well as hoped.

Whato - CRM para Whatsapp & Automatización de mensajes(Chrome, fpngeojekbciagkpddkcfbckciehhfca)
One-line verdict: This wasn't a new product cold-starting and taking off. It's a paid Spanish WhatsApp Web CRM (Whato, around for 2024 years) with roughly 5,000 users, whose old extension was pulled by Google. It was then re-listed under a new developer account (Wapitalia), and the old customers were migrated back. The recall figures showing "5 weeks 0→759, 20–50 per day, no breakout" mostly reflect the migration curve of existing users, not organic content acquisition.
1. What it is
- Spanish-market WhatsApp Web extension (a Portuguese version is also available): Kanban sales funnel, tags/notes/reminders, quick replies, bulk messaging, keyword chatbot, ChatGPT replies and translation, Flow Builder, Google Calendar sync, n8n/Sheets webhook.
- Pricing: the site whato.app/precios has a single plan at $15/month or $139/year (4 devices per number), payments via Stripe, 3–7 days free trial with no card required (the page contradicts itself, citing both 3 days and 7 days). The store listing says "Offers in-app purchases."
- Target audience: freelancers and small businesses in LATAM and Spain ("ideal para autónomos").
2. Key finding: this is a re-listing, not a new product

Inferred (cause not verified): Google delisted the old extension for malicious/policy reasons (Koi's malware label usually comes from Google's takedown reason; WhatsApp bulk-messaging extensions are often flagged for declarativeNetRequest header rewriting and automation). Paying Whato users have their copy of the extension remotely disabled by Chrome, so they have to reinstall the new ID. This explains the smooth curve of the new extension 5 gaining 759 users a week and 13 ratings (9 ratings on day 3 after listing, scores 4.5–4.8).
3. Growth data for the new extension
extops.dev readings (2026-11-06): users 2026-10-08 134 → 10-16 303 → 10-24 509 → 11-01 716 → 11-06 759,30 days +690; ratings 3 (10-08) → 13, average 4.5–4.8; versions 1.0.3–1.0.6, one release every 1–2 weeks. The chromestore library has only one card snapshot of 11-01 (699 users / 13 ratings). Compared with the old extension's peak of 5,000, it has so far won back only about 15%.
4. Competitors (doing the same thing: CRM/bulk-messaging extensions on WhatsApp Web)

| Leadsales, Wati, WhatsMarketing, Kommo | Web SaaS (official API) | Years | Big | Runs on the WhatsApp Business API, expensive and requires review; Whato's blog has dedicated "alternativa a …" comparison posts |
| White-label suppliers (Morphy at $189/year resale, lioncrm, Wachamp, etc.) | Other | — | — | Selling "stick the extension with your own brand on it", which is the supply side behind products like Whato, with a very low barrier to entry |
| WhatsApp Business App's built-in labels, quick replies, and catalog | Big-company features | — | — | Free, but no funnel, no bulk messaging, no automation |
Bottom line: the category is extremely crowded, and much of it is white-label reskins of the same engine. Whato has no feature moat.
5. How users found it
| Channel | Evidence | Confirmed |
|---|---|---|
| Migrating old users (main channel) | The old extension's 5,000 users were delisted; the new extension has the same name and description under a new developer account; smooth growth of 20–50 per day; 9 days after listing it already has 3 ratings | Yes (strong inference, migration rate unverified) |
| Spanish-language YouTube tutorials | @Whatocrm 1.81K subscribers, 191 videos, top single video about 4.4K views; installation tutorial 1,417 views (2025-02) | Yes |
| TikTok / Instagram / Facebook / WhatsApp Channels | TikTok @whatocrm 525 followers, 90 videos, 4,143 likes (TikHub); IG @whatocrm; FB whatocrm | Yes, small volume |
| SEO blog + free mini tools | whato.app: WhatsApp link/QR/button/template generators; "alternativa WhatsMarketing" and "Whaziper opiniones" (comparison pages using their own other product); long-tail content on n8n/Sheets "sin API"; 2026-10 new articles in a batch | Yes |
| Directory sites and sponsored content | Listed on G2, Capterra (.com/.co); reviews on riskopshq.com; low-quality paid placements such as jornada.com.pe (from the recall card) | Yes |
| Ads | Not found in our ad library, unverified | No |
Where the money comes back: $15/month subscription, collected directly via Stripe; the official site CTA is a Tally form "Prueba gratis" plus WhatsApp support, with "videollamada consultation" offered, which amounts to human sales plus a low-priced subscription.
6. Why it is working (this time with the new ID)
- An existing paying user base: the old extension already had 2026-02 5,000 users; after the delisting customers must reinstall, so the new ID's growth comes mainly from migration (Wayback + delisting evidence).
- Existing content and customer-service touchpoints: 191 YouTube tutorials, a WhatsApp channel, and support accounts make it easy to tell old customers to "install the new version".
- A backup developer account: relisting under the Wapitalia account (2023 years old) bypasses cold-start on a new account and a banned one.
- Low price anchor: $15/month vs. official-API tools like Leadsales/Wati (which the blog explicitly compares against), appealing to LATAM solo operators who don't want to apply for API access.
7. Differentiation
- The product itself: essentially no differentiation, with features nearly word-for-word identical to WA WorkFlow/WorkFlow CRM, very likely white-labeled.
- The real difference is language and market positioning: Spanish UI, Spanish tutorials, Spanish SEO, targeting LATAM solo operators; plus a one-price-for-everything at $15. The big English players (WAPlus, Cooby) and the Brazilian Portuguese players (ZapVoice, WaSpeed) don't focus on Spanish.
- This difference took the old extension from 69 to 5,000 between 2024-11 and 2026-02; but the reason the new ID is taking off this time is not differentiation, it's migration.
8. Visibility and copycats
- Not many people know about it yet: no public revenue (no TrustMRR listing, no founder posting numbers), no discussion found on X; only G2/Capterra listings and sponsored articles.
- Copycats: hardly "copying it", since it is itself one link in the white-label chain; similar white-label offerings (Morphy, lioncrm's resale panels) can be bought by anyone.
9. What others can learn
- A white-label engine + local-language packaging + YouTube tutorials + "alternativa to X" SEO + a $15 one-price plan can reach several thousand paying users in a single language market.
- Risk hedging: prepare a backup developer account and user touchpoints in advance (WhatsApp channel/email), so that after a delisting you can move users back within weeks.
- Lesson learned: WhatsApp bulk-messaging and header-rewriting extensions carry real delisting risk (the old version was flagged as malware). In this category, treat the extension as a shell that can be reopened at any time, and keep the customer relationship and accounts outside the extension (panel.whato.app, Stripe).
10. Uncertain
- Exact delisting date and cause of the old extension (after 2026-02, before 11-01; Koi flagged it as malware, Google has not published the reason).
- Whether it is a white-label of WorkFlow CRM (only two pieces of evidence: the injected domain and identical feature copy).
- Number of paying users, migration rate; the exact relationship between Wapitalia and Whato LLC / Francisco López.
- Whether the "extension update" video by 2026-06 instructs users to install manually from outside the store.
