A 60-user plugin hits 10k after one "WTF" video: UIDrop rode on-camera exposure, not early shipping
What it is A Chrome extension. One click grabs any website's colors, fonts, spacing, and component styles, along with a screenshot, and sends them to AI tools like Claude or ChatGPT so the AI builds a UI that looks like it.
Why it took off It rode the wave of "have AI build UI from a site's design" that followed Google open-sourcing DESIGN.md in April. The product produces a palette with one click and opens Claude automatically, which suits short videos. Developer creator RammCodes, with 500k followers, shared it organically, and the author turned "60→5000" into a Reddit post for another round.
CHow you could follow it Don't build another design extractor. Copy the conditions that made creators pick it: own the last step of a fresh format, "send directly to AI." Make a demo that works in 15 seconds, pitch it to AI tool accounts, write a build-in-public post as soon as it catches, and don't charge a few dollars one-time.

UIDrop is a Chrome extension: one click pulls the colors, fonts, spacing, and component styles from any website, sends them along with a screenshot to AI tools like Claude and ChatGPT, and has the AI build your interface to match that site's look. The author is a 20-year-old Romanian, and this is his first product. Two and a half months after launch it had only 60 users. A developer blogger with 500k followers found it and posted a short video, which brought in about 3,000 people over 4 days, taking it from Sep 24 to 10k. Then it stalled at 10k and has collected only $124 in total. People in this niche got there earlier and are bigger. What it teaches is how to get a small tool turned into a video, not whether this category deserves another entry.
A "holy sh*t" video
2026 Aug 9, Tudor Pop posted on Reddit that his extension had just reached 60 users. It launched in May 27 and had only 20 installs by early June. His July post on r/chrome_extensions, titled "first week 25 users," got only 5 upvotes.
A few days later, developer blogger RammCodes (Ram Maheshwari, who claims 500k followers across platforms: 217k on Instagram, 154k on Facebook) posted a video on X and Facebook titled:
holy sh*t broooooo this browser extension literally lets you extract a website's design…
Tudor later wrote on Havor: "An indie dev on X and Facebook made a video pushing it as a must-have tool, and in three or four days it brought me 3,000 users." At the peak it was installed about 1,500 times a day, and the website got 500–600 visits a day. According to him and a third-party case study, he never contacted the blogger and ran no ads. The exact date and view count of the video can't be verified from outside.
Then came a wave of reposts: an Instagram reel with "Yooooooooo WTF??? I recently found this free Chrome extension…", and AI tool accounts on LinkedIn, Threads, and YouTube Shorts passed it along. By Aug 24 it had 5,000 views; in early September it had about 7,400, with roughly 200 installs still coming in per day; by Sep 24 it was at 10k.
What it actually is
Starting in April, "make the AI build an interface that looks like a given website" became a hot request among people who code with AI. The trigger was Google open-sourcing Stitch's DESIGN.md format on Apr 21 (a plain-text file describing a site's look, so the AI knows which fonts and colors to use). awesome-design-md, a GitHub collection of DESIGN.md files from major brands, reached 126k stars.
UIDrop generates that kind of file on the spot, and adds one more step: Send. After you click "Snap this page," it opens Claude, ChatGPT, Gemini, Lovable, or Manus and pastes in the design notes and screenshot directly. Cursor gets it through the clipboard. It can also turn prominent page components into cards, merge the first screen of site A with the navigation of site B, and export Tailwind, shadcn, or Figma variables. It's free, needs no sign-up, and runs locally.
Why this one, not the earlier and bigger ones
It's neither the first nor the biggest. Chrome Web Store 11-06 numbers:
| Add-ons | Launched | users | How it differs from UIDrop |
|---|---|---|---|
| DESIGN.md Style Extractor - TypeUI | 2026-04-15 | 40,000 | Launched 6 weeks earlier, free and open source (3.1k GitHub stars), exports standard DESIGN.md |
| UIDrop | 2026-05-27 | 10,000 | Adds "send to AI," screenshots, component cards, and multi-site merging |
| DESIGN.md Inspector / DESIGN.md Generator | 2026-04 | Each 6,000 | Only exports files |
| Sitepeel | 2026-09-13 | 2,000 | Came later: "website clone + CSS inspection + Design MD," with in-app purchases |
| PikSpec, getdesignsystem.io, shadcn design.md, etc. | 2026 | A few hundred | Peers |
There are also web tools that generate output from a pasted URL, open-source Skills that AI agents can call directly, and Google Stitch itself, which includes "extract a design system from a URL." The veteran ColorZilla (4M users) and WhatFont (3M users) handle only individual colors or fonts and aren't aimed at AI.
Why did the creator pick it? Most likely because it's visual (inference): you click once, a color palette and component cards pop up, Claude opens automatically with the content already pasted in, and the whole demo runs in 15 seconds, with a "WTF" caption on top. TypeUI exports a markdown file, which isn't much to look at on camera. Its differentiation didn't make people stay or pay. It just made it suitable for being filmed, and being filmed accounts for nearly all of its growth.
Afterward: the story travels further than the product
After the spike, Tudor did one thing right: he turned the numbers into a story and pushed it out again. His Reddit post "two weeks ago I had 60 users, now it's past 5,000" got 34 upvotes and 42 comments, several times more than his pre-spike post. Someone then wrote a case study titled "from 60 to 3,500 users in 4 days," and revenue-tracking site TrustMRR, Havor, and a pile of AI tool directories picked it up. The website also added downloadable design-file pages for Stripe, Linear, Vercel, Airbnb, and others to capture search traffic, but its domain rating is only 2/100, so the effect is probably small.
None of this carried it past 10k. From Nov 1 to 6, the store kept showing 10k users and 7 ratings, with no change at all. (Above 10k the store only shows broad ranges, so this only means it hasn't reached the 20k tier, not that it stopped growing completely. The website self-reports "12k+.")
Competitors are already targeting it: a product called Borrowstyle has a page on its site titled "UIDrop alternative," with a feature-by-feature comparison, priced at $39 one-time or $5/month.
Money: 10k users, $124
UIDrop sells a one-time Pro purchase, with the price raised from $2.50 to $3 and then to $4. The verified payment-platform numbers on TrustMRR (11-06): $124 in total, $9 over the last 30 days, with no subscriptions. In early September the author said at least 30 people had bought Pro, which matches the $124 figure.
This shows two things: people who install on impulse almost never pay, and a tool you buy for a few dollars and then leave has no reason to bring anyone back. The thing it serves, "see how another site looks," is an infrequent action to begin with, and TypeUI, the leader in the category, is still free and open source.
If it were you
In one line: don't build another "website design extractor." This category was crowded by April, the leaders are free and open source, and UIDrop itself has stalled. What's worth copying is the set of conditions that got it picked up by creators. Grade: C.
Who it suits: indie developers who have a small pain point in their AI toolchain that can be turned into "one click, instant result"; people willing to pitch dev-tool accounts themselves and write build-in-public posts right after a spike.
Who it doesn't suit: anyone hoping to make money from this kind of extension. 10k users earned $124, so user count and revenue are barely related here. It's also not for anyone hoping to compete with TypeUI or Google Stitch on "who exports more."
How to build it: find a format or need that a major platform or a viral open-source project has just ignited (like DESIGN.md in April). Skip the "generate a file" step and build the final step, "send it straight into the AI tool users already use." The first screen of the product needs something worth filming, a "wow" within 15 seconds. On pricing, don't copy the $4 one-time purchase. Use per-use credits plus a subscription, or treat the extension as an entry point and sell ongoing web-based features (design libraries, brand swapping, comparing against your own site). Borrowstyle is already splitting things up this way.
How to get users: send the 15-second demo video to AI tool accounts and developer bloggers like RammCodes, and pay for a sponsorship if organic pickup doesn't happen. After a spike, within 48 hours, post an "X to Y" story on Reddit's r/SideProject and r/chrome_extensions, and submit to TrustMRR, Havor, and AI tool directories.
When to launch: the window for a trend is roughly one to two months after the hype peaks. The DESIGN.md wave has already passed. When the next similar format or protocol appears, launch within its first month.
What would show you misjudged it: if UIDrop had reached the 20k tier before early 2027, or if its monthly revenue on TrustMRR had climbed to several hundred dollars, that would show tools like this can retain users and collect money, and the category is wider than it looks. Conversely, if TypeUI and Sitepeel have also stalled, that would mean the whole demand faded along with DESIGN.md's popularity.

Why UIDrop — Design System Extractor for AI (Chrome) came out this way
Research date 2026-11-06. Store ID gkeiedoojhdmlaimiookeaoppgfpemij, website uidrop.site, developer tudorbuildstools (Tudor Pop, X accounts @tudorxjh / tudorbuildsai, Romania, 20 years old, first project).
Bottom line
UIDrop was a small "website design system extractor" that entered the market after the April DESIGN.md hype in 2026. It didn't launch with a product push or founder promotion. It went live on May 27 and had only 60 users by Aug 9. What really pushed it was an unpaid creator boost: RammCodes (Ram Maheshwari), a developer with 500k followers, posted short videos on Facebook, X and Instagram with "WTF, this extension can extract a whole site's design" framing, which brought roughly 3,000–3,500 installs in 4 days. The founder then kept it going with a run of "60→5000 users" build-in-public posts on Reddit, and users went from 24 to 10k in September before plateauing around 10k. Revenue is close to zero: $124 lifetime on TrustMRR, $9 in the last 30 days, from a $4 one-time-purchase Pro.

The extops curve quoted in the recall card goes from about 8/31 6k to about 9/25 10k, then flat for six weeks. That matches the numbers above. Note that the store only shows bands above 10k, so "flat" means it hasn't reached the 20k band, not that it stopped growing entirely.
Revenue: TrustMRR (verified via Polar API) shows $124 lifetime, $9 in the last 30 days, no subscriptions, priced at "$4 one-time Pro". It's listed as about 500 users, a 1-person team, self-funded, with acquisition channels listed as Reddit and X (https://trustmrr.com/startup/uidrop, read via 2026-11-06). Pro pricing rose from $2.50 to $3 to $4 (Reddit 1w70d5f, Strivle post).
2. Competitors
This category was ignited in April 2026 by Google Stitch's DESIGN.md format:
- Google open-sourced the Stitch DESIGN.md format in Apr 21 (https://blog.google/innovation-and-ai/models-and-research/google-labs/stitch-design-md/), and google-labs-code/design.md got 28.7k stars.
- VoltAgent/awesome-design-md (a collection of DESIGN.md files from major brands, repo created 3/31) got 125.8k stars (GitHub repo).
- Within one month in April, a wave of "URL or extension → DESIGN.md" tools launched.

Bottom line: UIDrop was neither first nor the biggest (TypeUI has 4× its users). It entered 6 weeks late, riding the tail of the DESIGN.md wave.
Copycats: After September, Sitepeel (2026-09-13,2,000 users, in-app purchases, "Website Cloner, CSS Inspector & Design MD"), PikSpec (2026-09-23,749 users, "Build with AI · CSS & Font Finder") and Copy to Design (2026-06-25) appeared. All of them position themselves as "for AI use", close to UIDrop's narrative, but whether they were modeled on it can't be confirmed. Design Catcher, StyleKit and StyleLift, mentioned in the recall card, didn't show up in our database search; unverified.
3. Where users come from
- Creator boost (decisive, confirmed): RammCodes (Ram Maheshwari, claims 500k+ followers; Facebook 154k, Instagram 217k, Threads 38k) discovered UIDrop himself and pushed it on X and Facebook as a "must-have tool". The Facebook video title was "holy sh*t broooooo this browser extension literally lets you extract a website's design…" (facebook.com/61554891783841/videos/1641411614066274; this page ID belongs to RammCodes). The founder said it "brought about 3,000 in 4 days" (Havor), and "500–600 people visiting the site daily" (Reddit 1w70d5f). padezhnov's case study says the founder never contacted him and didn't buy ads.
- Secondary short-video reposts (likely): an Instagram reel, "Yooooooooo WTF??? I recently found this free Chrome extension…" (DbOSoZToMOs); Simplifying AI on LinkedIn (2,285 followers, 7 likes); Threads @niclasskold; YouTube Shorts; and other repost pages on Facebook. This is standard practice for AI-tool repost accounts and came after RammCodes. There's no evidence whether the founder paid for any of it.
- Reddit build-in-public (confirmed, ongoing): the founder (u/Which-Journalist-352) posted at least 4 times between July and September on r/chrome_extensions and r/SideProject. The post before the spike got only 5 upvotes; after it, the "60→5000" post got 34 upvotes and 42 comments, and "monetization as a joke, then it actually started selling" got 26 upvotes. The post-spike story became new content in itself.
- Small-number, big-story secondary coverage (confirmed): padezhnov.com wrote a "60 to 3,500 Users in 4 Days" case study, Shipped & Paid wrote a "$115 verified" case study, and there's TrustMRR listing, Havor, Strivle, plus a batch of AI tool directories (aitoolscapital, softwareontheweb, ustack, extension.vn).
- Programmatic SEO (present, effect unverified): the site has ready-made DESIGN.md download pages for stripe, linear, vercel, airbnb, notion, spotify and other sites, the same approach as awesome-design-md. TrustMRR shows a Domain Rating of only 2/100, so SEO traffic is likely limited.
- Store search (inferred): once users passed a few thousand, it could rank for terms like "design system extractor". Part of the growth from late August to September 6k → 10k may have come from here, but it can't be quantified.
- No evidence found of paid ads, a Product Hunt launch (Havor says "Launched on Product Hunt", unverified), or HN exposure.
4. Why it took off
- The timing of demand was right: in April 2026, Google open-sourced DESIGN.md and awesome-design-md hit 126k stars, and "make AI build UI like a specific website" became a hot need among vibe coders. UIDrop entered a category that had already proven people wanted it.
- One big creator's one video produced 99% of the growth: 60 → 3,000+ took only 4 days, and the founder didn't drive it. The Reddit posts, case study and directory listings all followed from that spike.
- Visually made for short video: one click, a palette and component cards pop up, Claude opens automatically with the brief pasted in. It demos in 15 seconds, and "WTF"-style titles spread easily. TypeUI outputs a markdown file, which doesn't film as well. This may be why creators picked UIDrop over the bigger TypeUI (inferred).
- Free, no sign-up, runs locally: lowers the bar for impulse installs. A $4 one-time purchase barely blocks anyone, so it barely earns either.
5. Differentiation
- Other tools export a DESIGN.md file; UIDrop's difference is the "Send" step: one click to open Claude/ChatGPT/Gemini/Lovable/Manus with the brief and screenshots injected automatically, and Cursor via clipboard. It can also pull out "highlight components" as cards, merge multiple sites (A's hero + B's nav), has a snap library, and exports to Tailwind/shadcn/Figma Tokens.
- This differentiation isn't what drove it. The main driver was the creator boost. The differentiation made it "camera-friendly" and easy to grasp in a demo, which is exactly what got it picked up by creators. It did little for retention or payment: $124 lifetime, the rating count stayed at only 7, user numbers stopped at the 10k band, while the similar TypeUI reached 40k.
6. Takeaways
- Take the validated wave (DESIGN.md) and own the "last mile": don't just generate the file, send it straight into the AI tool users already work in.
- Make the product something that demos in 10 seconds and has a "wow" moment, so AI-tool repost accounts and developer creators want to share it. Pitching or paying creators with 500k followers, like RammCodes, is a repeatable play.
- Right after a spike, turn the numbers into a "60→5000" story and redistribute it on Reddit, TrustMRR and case study sites.
- Lesson learned: sold a one-time purchase at $4, and 10k users only brought in $124. Impulse installs with no repeat-purchase logic don't make money.
7. Still unclear
- The exact publish date and view count of RammCodes' video (not readable on Facebook/Instagram), and whether it was a paid partnership (the founder and the third party both say it was organic).
- Real user retention: the store's "users" number counts people who have it installed, not active users.
- Strivle Jun's 9 post says "Google removed it from the store 3 weeks ago, the appeal passed, and it went back up as v1.5", which doesn't match the May 27 listing date (the post was edited). Possibly the publish date was reset after the relisting.
- Whether the official site's "12k+" is more accurate than the store's 10k tier.
