BamiDoc: a Vietnamese university student posted one TikTok and turned "free Studocu downloads" into an extension 20k people use
What it is A free Chrome extension that removes the blur, overlays, and watermarks from documents on Studocu, Scribd, and SlideShare, and saves them as PDFs.
Why it took off The creator posted install tutorials on Vietnamese student TikTok: one in April got 520k views, and two more during the September back-to-school season. It was also one of the few in its category listed on the Chrome Web Store, installable in one click, and free, which met the steady demand from Vietnamese students who don't want to pay for a Studocu membership.
DHow to ride it Don't build another document downloader. Copy the playbook: student devs film install tutorials in their native language, with real faces, on local student TikTok, timed to the back-to-school season; test demand with a zip file and a video first, and only go to the store once the comments start saying it won't install.

BamiDoc is a Chrome extension that exports the blurred, obscured documents on Studocu, Scribd, and SlideShare as clean PDFs. It's made by a university student in Vietnam, it's free, and its features are no different from the open-source scripts that litter GitHub. It went from 3,000 to 20k users in two months, thanks to the creator's own TikTok, and to something few clones have managed: it's on the Chrome Web Store and has stayed there.
An install tutorial with 520k views
On Apr 16, 2026, the TikTok account @ngocchien5170 posted a 77-second video titled "Hướng dẫn cài extension tải tài liệu Studocu miễn phí - Bánh mì Cẩm Phả" (How to install a free extension for downloading Studocu documents - Bánh mì Cẩm Phả). The creator is Nguyễn Ngọc Chiến, who goes by "Bánh mì Cẩm Phả" (bread from Cẩm Phả, a city in Quảng Ninh). His videos keep the tag #vmu, for Vietnam Maritime University in Hải Phòng.
At that point the extension wasn't on the store yet. The video showed the manual method: download a zip from Facebook, unzip it, turn on developer mode in Chrome, and click "Load unpacked." By Nov 6, the video had 518k views, 28k likes, and 9,315 shares (TikTok, 11-06). Half the comments were thanks, and half were questions about installing: "I clicked upload packed, and I can't find the file on my computer," "I don't have load unpacked here," "You forgot to remind everyone to turn on developer mode first." The most-liked comment (179 likes) asked something else: "Is there a way to get into Studocu without a VPN? I have to switch regions every time."
The most common phrase was "công đức vô lượng," roughly "boundless merit." Another wrote: "Only found this as I'm about to graduate."
What it is
Once installed, when you open a document page on Studocu, Scribd, or SlideShare, the extension removes the blurred overlay, watermarks, and ads, and gathers the pages into a clean PDF you can save. The store listing is four lines: fast download, clean layout, watermark removal, ad blocking.
| Metric | Sources | |

| Launched | 2026-05-25,10-26 updated to 2.0 | Chrome Web Store |

| Rating | 4.99 stars, about 120 reviews | Chrome Web Store, 11-06 |
| Paid | No in-app purchases, no pricing | Chrome Web Store, author's homepage |
Version 2.0 renamed it from "Bánh mì Cẩm Phả - Studocu…" to BamiDoc and added Scribd and SlideShare alongside Studocu. The store listing covers 54 languages. Besides these document sites, its permissions include chatgpt.com and gemini.google.com, so my guess is it has a "send the document to AI" feature (inferred, not verified).
It doesn't download everything, either. Common complaints in the reviews: some exported pages come out blank, some stay blurry, and formulas get garbled. The author replied to one user in the store: this isn't a bug; before downloading, scroll the document all the way to the bottom so every page loads.
Why this one took off
The demand has always been there, especially in Vietnam. Studocu has a Vietnamese local site, with lots of Vietnamese university lecture notes and exam material on it. Reading the full text requires a paid membership, and students generally won't pay. Search "tải tài liệu studocu" (download Studocu documents) on TikTok and you'll find other people's tutorials on the same topic. One from August 2025 has over a million views. People keep searching this term, and whoever has a tool that works gets the traffic.
The author himself was the channel. The April video brought its first users and word of mouth. When Vietnamese school started in September, he posted two more videos on the 14th and 15th, with 63k and 22k views (TikTok, 11-06). User numbers started climbing from then, reaching 10k in a month and a half. A comment under the September video reads: "Just search Bánh Mì Cẩm Phả in the Chrome store and install it."
Once it was in the store, people no longer had to be taught how to turn on developer mode. There are several open-source projects on GitHub with the same function: stuhack has 1,504 stars and is no longer maintained; studocuhack has 449 stars; Studocu-Scribd-Helper, made by a Vietnamese developer, has 442 stars (GitHub, 11-06). All of them ship as zip files that users have to install by hand. The string of "it won't install" comments under the April video shows exactly who this barrier stopped. Moving to the store meant one click to install, plus automatic updates.
Free, and the author replies to every review. Almost every review in the store has a reply from him: "thank you brooo", "cam on bn nha" (thank you). One person wrote: "doing the lord's work brother🙏 have as many cups of coffee as you want."
Where users come from
- The author's own TikTok: the main channel. The account has 400 followers and 8 videos. The April video got 520k views, and the two September school-start videos added up to 85k. He posted three more in October about "how to use it on your phone," each getting a couple thousand views.
- YouTube and Facebook: a channel with the same name posts the tutorials there too. The YouTube video has 1,230 views. On Facebook he posts the zip file and answers "it won't install, what do I do" questions. Volumes are small.
- Store search: after the rename, the title packed in three names, Studocu, Scribd, and SlideShare, and the listing covers 54 languages. After September, reviews from users in Pakistan and Latin America started appearing in the store. Under the English-titled September TikTok there was a Spanish comment: "eres mi salvador" (you're my savior). Growth from 10k to 20k in November: there's no way to tell from outside how much came from store search and how much was the afterglow of TikTok.
- I couldn't find it mentioned in ads, media, X, or Reddit. Anyone who knows about it is basically inside the Vietnamese student community.
Where the money comes from
Almost none. The author's homepage is a free link-in-bio page with a Vietnamese bank transfer QR code, a PayPal tip link, Shopee affiliate links, and his social accounts. It's a student's side project, not a business.
Who it's competing with
| Competitors | Scale | How it differs from BamiDoc |
|---|---|---|
| DocFlow (also made by a Vietnamese developer) | 20k users, rated 1.41 (64 reviews), listed 2023 years | Requires login and charges money, supports more sites, reviews full of complaints |
| Scribd Downloader | Listed 9-20, grew to 5,000 users | 11-04 pulled from the store |
| DocLift | Listed 8-31, 596 users | Scribd only |
| Open-source GitHub equivalents (stuhack, studocuhack, Studocu-Scribd-Helper, etc.) | A few hundred to 1,500 stars | Same features, manual install only |
| Web tools like dlstudocu and docdownloader | Ranks at the top of Google search | Paste a link to download, lots of ads, often can't grab paywalled pages; nothing to install |
| Studocu membership | Official | Official, paid |
Two tools with similar user counts, one rated 1.41 and one rated 4.99; the difference is whether they charge. Another worth noting is Scribd Downloader: it was listed for about a month and a half, grew to 5,000 users, and was then removed. In this category, just surviving in the store already screens out a lot of competitors.
If it were you
D: Not recommended to follow. The playbook is worth recording, but this category isn't worth entering.
There's no barrier to the functionality; open-source code is everywhere. There's also no revenue, and it's hard to monetize. DocFlow, a paid tool of similar scale, was pushed down to 1.4 stars. Bypassing paywalls carries copyright risk; a peer was just removed, and a Studocu redesign could break it at any time. It took off because of the author's own viral video on Vietnamese student TikTok, plus the luck of listing first and never getting removed. Later entrants don't get either of those.
Who it suits: student developers who want to cold-start their own tool. Learn the playbook, not the category. Use your native language, your real name and face, and make "how to install, how to use" tutorials on your home country's student TikTok. Time them for back-to-school and exam season.
Who it doesn't suit: anyone planning yet another Studocu or Scribd downloader and hoping to earn money from it. Monetization is down to tips and affiliate links, and Google or the document sites could cut those off at any time.
How to do it: look for small tools that students use every day and that are blocked by a paywall or an installation hurdle. Ideally, avoid copyright issues. Test demand first with a zip file and a short video. Once "it won't install" comments appear, it's time to list in the store. After listing, put the platform names users search for in the title, write the copy in several languages, and catch the store search traffic.
How to acquire users: the author appears on camera himself to film install tutorials, one video per question (how to install, how to use it on your phone, what to do when the export is blank pages). Questions in the comments become the topics of the next videos.
When to move: student tool traffic follows the school calendar. Back-to-school in Vietnam and Southeast Asia runs from 8 to September; finals run from December into January. Shoot before those windows.
What would mean you've misread it: ① BamiDoc starts charging or runs ads, and user numbers and ratings hold, which shows these users will pay and is worth a second look. ② It stays listed through the next school-year season and passes 50k users, which means the removal risk is smaller than it looks. ③ Conversely, if it gets removed or a Studocu redesign knocks it out, that shows this category can't survive even as a free side project.

Bottom line
A Vietnamese university student (TikTok tag #vmu, for Vietnam Maritime University in Hải Phòng) built this free Studocu/Scribd/SlideShare download extension. Growth came from his own tutorial videos on Vietnamese student TikTok (2026-04 videos with 520k views; two September back-to-school videos with 63k / 22k views), tapping into the constant demand created by Studocu's paywall and Vietnamese students who can't afford memberships. The differentiator isn't features (open-source GitHub extensions with the same functions are a dime a dozen). It's that it's on the Chrome Web Store, installs in one click, is free, and the author replies actively. Rivals either require manual installs in developer mode, charge and get hit with 1.4-star ratings, or were pulled from the store shortly after listing.
1. Data: growth curve
| Date | Users | Score | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2026-05-25 | Launched | — | Store published |
| 2026-09-01 | 3,000 | 27 | extops_series (chromestore DB) |
| 2026-09-26 | 6,000 | 39 | Same as above |
| 2026-10-05 | 8,000 | 46 | Same as above |
| 2026-10-16 | 10,000 | 68 | Same as above |
| 2026-11-03 | 10,000 | 112 | Same as above |
| 2026-11-06/07 | 20,000 | 121–130 | extops_series / item_snap (chromestore DB) |
- Acceleration from September: two months from 3k to 20k (about 6.7x), ratings 27 → 130, average score steady at 4.96–5.0. Store counts above 10k are shown in rounded tiers; the 10k→20k tier change happened between 11-03 and 11-06.
- Ratings/users ≈ 0.6%, high for a Chrome extension. Reviews (on the store review page) are mostly short Vietnamese-named comments: "GOAT", "very good", "Phát sóng!!!", with some users from Pakistan and Latin America. The author replies to nearly every one with "thankyou so much 😍". Whether he asks for good reviews in the videos is unverified, but the comments read like real students.
- Monetization: no in-app purchases, no pricing. The official site is a workers.dev link-in-bio page with only a HDBank transfer QR code, PayPal tips, Shopee affiliate links, and social accounts (read via r.jina.ai at banhmicampha-bio.ngocchien5170.workers.dev). Almost no money; this is not a commercial project.
- The version is now 2.0.0 (10-26 updates), expanded from Studocu to Scribd and SlideShare, renamed BamiDoc for international audiences; the store lists 54 languages. Permissions include cookies, scripting, and clipboardWrite, injecting into studocu.com/.vn/.id, studeersnel.nl, scribd, slideshare, plus chatgpt.com, openai.com, and gemini.google.com (purpose unverified, possibly a "send the document to AI" feature).
2. Growth levers (where users come from)
- The author's own TikTok tutorials (confirmed, main channel). TikHub pulled @ngocchien5170 (400 followers, 8 videos, 31k total likes):
- 2026-04-16 "Hướng dẫn cài extension tải tài liệu Studocu miễn phí - Bánh mì Cẩm Phả" 518k views, 28k likes. This was before the store listing (5-25); back then it was a zip package posted on Facebook, with instructions to turn on developer mode and install manually (Facebook post summary: "Tải và giải nén thư mục Studocu Pro… Bật Chế độ dành cho nhà phát triển"). This video built the first users and word of mouth, and the extension was later moved to the store.
- 2026-09-14 "Studocu Scribd SlideShare free download" 63k views; 09-15 "Cách tải tài liệu Studocu, Scribd, Slideshare miễn phí 2026" 22k views. This lines up with the September start of the Vietnamese school year, when the curve took off from 3k.
- 10-20, 10-26, and 11-01 posted three more (1–2 thousand views each); 11-01 covered "using Studocu and Scribd on your phone."
- The bio points to tinyurl.com/banhmicampha → bio page → store link (with utm_source=item-share-cb).
- YouTube mirror tutorials (confirmed, small volume): @BanhMiCamPha has 15 subscribers and 09-15 videos with 1,230 views; descriptions link directly to the store.
- Facebook personal account / fan page (confirmed to exist, volume unknown): posts install tutorials and troubleshooting videos for "lots of people say it won't install." Vietnamese university student Facebook groups (e.g. PTIT 2k5 group) often share this kind of "free Studocu" tool, but no direct evidence was found of BamiDoc being shared in those groups.
- TikTok search / long-tail keywords (inferred): searching "tải tài liệu studocu" on TikTok, the top results include his two videos; the same search also shows hauhoctap (2025-81M views), tung.marketing.06, dthaihanhoa (Thai/Vietnamese, 67k), and other people's tutorials. This suggests a steady search demand among Vietnamese students on TikTok, and whoever has a working tool captures the traffic.
- Store search + multilingual SEO (inferred): renamed BamiDoc, the title stacks three big keywords (Studocu / Scribd / SlideShare), plus a list of 54 languages. Non-Vietnamese reviews appeared after September, suggesting it started picking up international store-search traffic. The November jump across the 20k tier may partly come from this, but it can't be separated out.
- Ads, press, X, Reddit, HN: none found. x-radar searched studocu / BamiDoc over 90 days and found 0 posts; a Jina search for BamiDoc only returned the store page and the author's own Facebook.
III. Competitors
| Name | Where | Launched | Scale | How BamiDoc differs |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| DocFlow: Scribd, SlideShare, Studocu, Issuu (by Ngô Tiến Phát, also Vietnamese) | Chrome | 2023-06 | 20k users, rating 1.41 (64 reviews), has in-app purchases, backend at axioapi.com | Paid, requires an account, covers more sites (Issuu, Course Hero, Academia, ResearchGate); users complain a lot. BamiDoc is free and rated 5.0 stars, with a similar user base. |
| Scribd Downloader(eacdahap…) | Chrome | 2026-09-20 | 5,000 users | 2026-11-04 was removed from the store (chromestore DB gone_date), showing that removal risk for this kind of extension is real. |
| DocLift - Scribd Downloader & PDF Exporter | Chrome | 2026-08-31 | 596 users | Scribd only |
| Panther - Studocu Unlocker, StudoCu Downloader Pro, etc. | Chrome (visible on third-party mirror sites) | Not verified | Softonic shows Panther at 734 stars | Not found in our store list; most likely removed or renamed (unverified) |
| isanchop/stuhack | Open source (GitHub) | 2021-11 | 1,504 star | No longer maintained, requires manual install |
| danieltyukov/studocuhack | Open source | 2023-07 | 449 stars, 11-03 still being updated | Only Studocu; distributed as a zip, installed via developer mode; more transparent technically (explains that the premium lock page can't be recovered) |
| xDatx/Studocu-Scribd-Helper (Vietnamese) | Open source | 2025-12 | 442 star | Same Studocu+Scribd PDF export, manual install; promoted by Vietnamese TikTok accounts (nguyendinhcuong200M views) |
| Calamivathan/StudoCu-PDF-Downloader, TroLyAmazon/studocu-hack-remake, thienbaodeptrai/freestudocu, etc. | Open source | 2025–2026 | 22–528 star | Mostly web versions or manual installs, with a high share of Vietnamese authors |
| dlstudocu.com, okdebrid, docdownloader.com, freescrib, scribd.vdownloaders.com, etc. | Web | Years | Top SEO results (Jina search) | Paste a link to download; lots of ads, often broken; nothing to install, but Studocu's paywalled pages often can't be captured |
| Studocu Premium itself | Big companies / official | — | Official paid subscription | Legitimate; most Vietnamese students are unwilling to pay |
Conclusion: many rivals, with similar features. BamiDoc is not the first, nor the one with the most features.
4. Why it took off
- The demand is constant and especially strong in Vietnam: Studocu has a local studocu.vn site with many Vietnamese university course materials behind the paywall. On TikTok, "tải tài liệu studocu miễn phí"-style videos keep reaching millions of views (hauhoctap 2025-08 1.01M).
- The author is the channel: a student making tutorials on TikTok under his real name and face. A 520k-view hit gave it a cold start, and two more videos at the September back-to-school period sent the curve up immediately (9/1 3k → 10/16 10k).
- Store listing = lowest barrier: open-source rivals all require "download zip → unzip → turn on developer mode → load unpacked". The author's own Facebook posts also include "lots of people can't install it" troubleshooting. Moving to the store made it one-click install with automatic updates. In this niche many rivals never make it onto the store or don't last (Scribd Downloader 11-04 was removed), so staying on the store is itself a moat.
- Free + author replying to reviews personally = good word of mouth: DocFlow, a similar-sized paid rival, is hit with 1.4 stars, while BamiDoc has 5.0. Store ranking and conversion both depend on ratings.
- Continuous iteration, expanding to more sites, international rename: from Studocu to Scribd/SlideShare, renamed BamiDoc in version 2.0, 54 languages, extending the traffic from Vietnam to global store search.
5. Differentiation
- No feature differentiation (open-source projects do the same, sometimes better).
- The real difference is the combination of three things: one-click install from the store + completely free + the author personally distributing on his country's student TikTok. "Still on the store, not removed" and "built-in TikTok distribution" are the direct reasons it grew. Being free and highly rated let it outrank the paid DocFlow in the store.
6. Visibility and copycats
- Visibility: talked about in small circles. It has buzz on Vietnamese student TikTok/Facebook. No English-language web, X, press, or Reddit coverage was found. Revenue is absent and undisclosed.
- Copycats: a few new listings in the category over recent months (DocLift in August, Scribd Downloader in September (since removed), DocGrab (Free) 11-05). GitHub also has freestudocu with 2026-09 stars, but there's no sign it copied BamiDoc; this is normal for the category.
VII. What to take away
- "Author as channel": student developers make install tutorials in their local language on TikTok, and one viral video can cold-start a tool. They post clustered around school start and exam season.
- Gray-area tools: validate demand first with zip packages + social media, then move to the store to capture one-click installs and search traffic.
- Stack several platform keywords in the title (Studocu / Scribd / SlideShare) + a multilingual list for store SEO.
- But it's not a business to build on: it circumvents paywalls, carries high copyright risk, and could be removed by Google or broken by Studocu redesigns at any time. Monetization is limited to tips and Shopee affiliate links.
8. Not sure
- The traffic sources behind the November jump across the 20k tier (leftover Vietnamese TikTok momentum vs. international store search) can't be separated.
- The purpose of the injections into chatgpt.com / gemini is unverified; whether the cookies permission poses a data risk hasn't been checked in the code.
- Whether the videos encourage good reviews is unverified.
- According to the studocuhack docs, Studocu doesn't serve a text layer for premium pages. How much paid content BamiDoc can actually download hasn't been tested.
- How long it survives in the store is unknown; similar ones are often delisted.
