Manhwave: AI Manga & Manhwa Translator · manhwave.com

The steep curve of a comic translation extension: 6 weekly 628 users, half from two days of good reviews, with the payment button not yet connected

What it is A Chrome extension that, on comic reading sites, translates speech bubbles into 26 languages with one click, erases the original text, and places the translation back in comic-style lettering.

Why it's trending It hasn't really taken off yet: in its second week after launch, a batch of five-star reviews came in all at once, daily ratings jumped from 9 to 24, and it picked up search traffic from a 4.9-point rating and a keyword-stuffed name. 10-16 there was also a one-day +175 spike with no traceable source. Since then it's only been adding single digits to a few dozen a day.

CHow you could follow Don't build another English manga translation extension. Take the two things it does: run detection, OCR, and inpainting on the user's own machine so the server only pays for text translation, and pair a "series name + minority language" programmatic SEO playbook with local payment methods. Apply both to an image-plus-text niche nobody has crowded yet.

C grade: the category already has 40+ extensions, and the top ones after five years have only tens of thousands of users. Kites already does local processing for free, and Manhwave itself hasn't started charging. Its cost structure and minority-language SEO are worth learning from, but following the category isn't worth it. Few people know about it yet

601 users · rating 4.916666666666667 (24)

Manhwave, a Chrome extension launched in Sep 25 2026, translates manga speech bubbles in place on reading sites like WEBTOON and Tapas: it erases the original text, repaints the background, and re-inserts the translation in comic fonts. By Nov 6 it had 628 users and a 4.9 rating. The curve looks steep, but break it down and you get one batch of concentrated good reviews, one single-day jump with no traceable source, and ordinary growth in an already crowded category. What's actually worth studying isn't the growth. It's two other things: a cost structure that runs the heavy work on the user's machine, and a programmatic SEO bet on Polish.

Oct 6: eight five-star reviews that never mention manga

On Manhwave's store reviews page, Oct 6 and 7 are packed with five-star ratings. Hayes Taylor writes "Really handy extension... has made my browsing workflow a little easier"; Chloe Brooks writes "Definitely worth trying if you're looking for a convenient Chrome extension"; Sela Whitmore, James Sliver, Diana Ellison, Elias grant, and Maxwell grande are all roughly the same: easy to use, simple, improves browsing efficiency. Only one review in the batch (Kabir vetiran, 10-06) mentions "raw manga or manhwa." The rest would fit under any extension.

The curve matches: per extops.dev's records, the rating count went from 10-08 to 9 reviews, and 10-09 became 24, a gain of 15 in one day. Afterward it dropped to 22 and 21, as if the store had removed some of them, then went back to 24 in November. 600 users with 24 ratings is a ratio of about 4%, far above what a normal extension gets. The only genuine reviews visible since are 10-24 a long one from Sohaib Khalyl ("by far the best comic translator I've tried so far") and 10-29 a single "the best."

What it actually does

After installing, open a chapter, click the extension icon, pick a language, hit Translate, and scroll. The homepage's first line: "Stop waiting for translations." No more waiting on fan translation groups.

  • 26 target languages; it reads English, Japanese, Chinese, and Korean source text. Translations are set back into the bubbles in comic fonts, with the original lettering erased and the background filled in. Hover to see the original. Change the font or size without re-translating. Pages you've already read don't cost credits again (homepage, 11-06).
  • The install package is 146 MiB. It's that big because the bubble detection, OCR, and inpainting models are bundled and run locally. Only the extracted text goes to a large model for translation; page images aren't uploaded (store page and homepage, "Private by design"). It also asks for few permissions and doesn't request access to all sites.
  • Pricing is per text, not per image: every 750 source characters costs 1 credit. 50 free credits a week, 100 more for leaving an email, no sign-up or card required. Starter is $4.99/month for 1,000 credits, Unlimited is $19.99/month, and a one-time $5.99 buys 1,000 credits that never expire. The homepage says a paid chapter costs "about 1 cents."
  • But 11-06 when I opened the homepage, all three purchase buttons said "Stripe link not connected yet." It can't take money yet.

In just over a month it went from launch to 0.3.29 (11-02), with frequent updates.

Where users come from

ChannelWhat we saw
Fake reviewsThat batch of 10-06/07 templated five-star reviews took the daily rating count from 9 to 24.
Store searchThe name, stuffed with "AI Manga & Manhwa Translator," got a 4.9 rating after the review dump, and from 10-08 on it steadily added dozens of people a day (inferred, no source data).
10-16 +175 in one day10-13 is 229,10-16 is 404; no matching posts found on Reddit, X, TikTok, or media. Possibly paid acquisition or pushed installs (unverified).
Website SEOThe site was built in Apr 26. In Sep 12 it published "Best AI Manga Translators of 2026: 7 Tools Compared," ranking itself first. There's also a string of comparison pages: "Torii vs Manhwave," "Ichigo vs Manhwave."
Social mediaA 40-second YouTube tutorial gets about 210 views. A Facebook fan page post from 10-02 has zero engagement. TikTok search finds nothing, and X has no mentions in the past 60 days.
Third-party chartstechgyd.com's "10-27 6 Best Manga Translation Tools" lists it, with IsManga ranked first.

After 10-16 it only adds 3 to 30 users a day, and 10-25 to 10-30 has almost stalled (561→575). Buying reviews can push it into search results, but it can't build word of mouth.

174 Polish series pages

Its most interesting first-hand detail is in the homepage sitemap: 356 pages, with 43 each in English, Spanish, and Romanian, and 227 in Polish. 174 of the Polish pages follow the same format, "<series name> po polsku" (Polish edition): Solo Leveling, One Piece, Chainsaw Man... They were mass-generated in early November.

Clicking "Solo Leveling po polsku" (published 11-04), it doesn't read like spam: Polish publisher Waneko has released up to volume 13, volume 14 comes out in Nov 17; the official English serialization is on Tappytoon, with chapters 0–3 free; and it tells you which volume to start from. A reader who searches "where to read this manga in Polish" lands here and happens to see an extension that can translate the official English serialization into Polish.

The payment setup is telling: the official site says "pay in złoty in Poland, US dollars everywhere else," and one-time top-ups support BLIK, Poland's most-used mobile payment. The 404 page is in Polish, but the store listing address is in Petworth, UK. The team is most likely in Poland (inference, not verified).

The logic is clear: the English manga translation market is packed, while Polish readers have long lacked official translations and face little competition. The problem is it isn't working yet. When 11-06 searched "solo leveling po polsku," "manga translator extension chrome," and "best ai manga translator 2026" on a search engine, manhwave.com didn't show up in the top 10 results. These pages only went live a few days ago, so whether they can drive traffic needs another month or two to judge.

Who it's competing with: at least 40

In the Chrome Web Store, at least 40 extensions have manga/manhwa/webtoon translation in the name or description (as of early November):

ProductLaunchedScale (store)How it differs from Manhwave
Manga Translator(IsManga)2020-0560k users, 3.27 ratingEstablished, has a mobile app; pages are uploaded to the cloud for processing

Kites: Local-First Manga Translator2026-09-16646Also runs locally, uses the GPU; store page says "100% free, unlimited... No subscriptions," launched 9 days before Manhwave
MetelScan2026-07942Same tier and scale over the same period, 30 days +340

Google Lens / Chrome image translation—Built inFree, but just pasted over the image
Open-source projects like manga-image-translatorFrom ¥2021Up to 10k+ stars (GitHub)Requires installing Python yourself, ideally with a GPU

This table makes two things clear. First, the ceiling: the leader after four or five years has only tens of thousands of users. Second, Manhwave's "local processing" isn't unique. Kites is built on Local-First and is completely free. New manga translation extensions reaching hundreds or thousands of users within weeks is common in this category.

If it were you

C: worth learning from, not worth following. Dozens of manga translation extensions already exist. The top one after five years has only tens of thousands of users. "Local processing" was done earlier by others, and for free. Manhwave itself hasn't shown anyone will pay. What's worth taking is its two approaches, not the category.

  • Who it's for: developers building "image + text" tools (screenshot translation, product image localization, table image recognition) who run ONNX/WebGPU models in the browser, or people whose native language is a minority language and who are willing to spend a month or two building a content site.
  • Who it's not for: anyone who wants to squeeze another extension into English manga translation, or anyone counting on review-buying for growth. After the dump, it only adds single or low double digits a day, and the store deleted several of its reviews.
  • How to do it: copy its cost structure. Bundle detection, OCR, and inpainting into the extension to run on the local machine, pay the server only for LLM text, charge by characters instead of images, and you can afford more generous free tiers than competitors. Apply it to a niche nobody has crowded yet.
  • How to acquire users: copy its minority-language programmatic SEO. Mass-produce long-tail pages in the form "<popular series/product name> + <language>," give each page real, useful information (where to read it, which volume it's out to), and add local payment methods (BLIK in Poland). Build the site first, then list the extension, so landing and comparison pages exist on launch day.
  • When to move before: there's no rush, and this isn't a time-limited opportunity. If you do want to pursue manga translation, wait a month or two after Manhwave connects payments and see how it goes.
  • What would show this read is wrong: (1) by the end of 2026, its Polish "<series name> po polsku" pages rank in the top results for search, and the user curve picks up again. That would show minority-language SEO works and is worth copying for other languages. (2) Once payments are live, there's evidence of sustained paying users, for example appearing on public revenue charts. (3) A manga translation extension passes 100k users within a few months, showing the ceiling isn't what it looks like now (tens of thousands).

Where users come from
  • Confirmed Buying fake or paid reviews: 10-06 and 10-07 saw a batch of five-star reviews appear together (Sela Whitmore, James Sliver, Chloe Brooks and others), all filled with empty lines like "browsing workflow", none mentioning manga. extops shows the rating count went from 10-08 to 9 reviews, the 10-09 went to 24, then dropped to 21.
  • Inferred Store search boost: after the ratings were padded, the listing reached 4.9 stars, and the name was stuffed with keywords. From 10-08 onward it steadily pulled in dozens of users a day. No direct source data.

Manhwave: AI Manga & Manhwa Translator (Chrome extension) research report

Data as of 2026-11-06. Store ID hcbbangpaljodiikadaphjjofkdhnchc, official site manhwave.com.

Bottom line

It hasn't really taken off yet. 6 grew to about 628 users a week, which is ordinary for a manga translation extension. Similar tools listed around the same time (MetelScan, Kites) are at the same scale. Its numbers look steep mainly because of two things: first, a batch of reviews bought in its second week (the five-star reviews from 10-06 and 10-07 are vague and never mention manga; the rating count jumped from 9 to 24, and the store later removed some of them); second, a single-day jump of +175 on 10-16 with no identified source. The real differentiation is in tech and cost: detection, OCR and image cleanup all run locally, and only text goes to the LLM. That's why it can sell at about 1 cents per chapter and asks for few permissions. It also bets on the Polish market (BLIK/złoty payments, 227 Polish-language pages). But none of this has turned into growth yet, and the payment buttons still read "Stripe link not connected yet", so it isn't taking money.

1. What the product is

  • A desktop Chrome extension. On chapter pages of reader sites such as WEBTOON, Tapas, Tappytoon and Manta, one click detects speech bubbles, translates them, and places the translation back into the bubbles in a manga-style font. It supports 26 target languages (the store description says 27). Hovering shows the original text, there are three font styles, and pages already translated don't cost credits again (store page, official site).
  • Version 0.3.29,2026-11-02 update; package size 146 MiB. That size suggests the detection, OCR and image-cleanup models are bundled and run locally in the extension, consistent with the store page's "Bubbles read on your device".
  • Permissions: extops shows 7 permissions, and the manifest declares no site access (no <all_urls>). It works through activeTab/scripting (extops.dev single page).
  • Pricing: 50 free credits per week (100 if you leave an email), no sign-up, no card. Starter $4.99/month for 1,000 credits, Unlimited $19.99/month (with fair-use limits), and a one-time Top-up of $5.99 for 1,000 credits that never expire. Credits are counted by source text: every 750 characters costs 1 points. Checkout runs through Stripe, and Poland gets złoty pricing with BLIK (official homepage). But all three purchase buttons say "Stripe link not connected yet", so as of 11-06 it cannot take payments.
  • Developer: store listing credits Manhwave, with a Petworth, UK address and no trader status declared; extops lists the developer as manhwave.ai. The official WordPress site's 404 page is in Polish ("Strona nie znaleziona"), and pricing includes PLN/BLIK, so the team is probably in Poland (inferred, not verified).

2. Data: growth curve

Source: extops.dev single-page curve (2026-11-06 scrape). Our chromestore library snapshot 2026-11-01 shows 601 users, 24 ratings, 4.92 stars.

  • After 10-16 it grew only 3–30 a day, and from 10-25 to 10-30 it nearly stalled (561→575).
  • Comparables (extops, same day): MetelScan (listed 2026-07) 10-08 went from 607,11-06 to 942,30, +340 in days; Kites: Local-First Manga Translator (listed 2026-09-16) peaked near 1k in October, then fell back to 646; MangaLens (listed 2026-06) reached only 451. So a new manga translation extension reaching hundreds or thousands of users within weeks is common in this category, and Manhwave is not an outlier.

3. Competitors: this category is already crowded

On the Chrome Web Store (chromestore library 2026-11 snapshot, matching manga/manhwa/webtoon translation by name or description), there are at least 40 extensions doing in-page manga translation:

ProductFormLaunchedScaleHow it differs from Manhwave

Bottom line: someone is doing this, big companies already have built-in features, and mature open-source options exist, so users have plenty of choices. The leaders IsManga, Scan Translator and Ichigo have been around for 2020–2022 years and have only tens of thousands of users, which suggests the ceiling for this niche is low.

4. Growth levers: where users come from

  1. Buying fake or paid reviews (strong evidence): the store review page shows a batch of five-star reviews appearing together over 10-06 and 10-07, signed Sela Whitmore, James Sliver, Diana Ellison, Elias grant, Hayes Taylor, Chloe Brooks, Maxwell grande and others. They're full of lines like "useful extension… my browsing workflow… easy to use", not one mentions manga or translation, a classic review-farm template. The curve matches: the rating count went from 10-08 to 9 reviews, the 10-09 became 24 reviews, then dropped to 22 and 21, as if the store cleared some out. Now 24 ratings for 600 users, a rating rate near 4%, far above a normal extension. Only two or three genuine reviews have come since (10-24 Sohaib Khalyl with a long review, 10-29 "the best").
  2. Store search boost (inferred): a 4.9-star rating plus a name stuffed with "AI Manga & Manhwa Translator" put it near the top of store search after the ratings were padded. From 10-08 onward it steadily pulled in dozens of users a day. There is no direct evidence for this part.
  3. 10-16 single-day +175 (source not identified): no matching posts found on Reddit, X, TikTok or media. Paid acquisition or bundled installs are not ruled out.
  4. SEO content site (set up early, not paying off yet): the official homepage's publish date is 2026-04-26, and its own "Best AI Manga Translators of 2026: 7 Tools Compared" was published on 09-12. Both predate the extension's listing, and the post ranks itself #1 (4.9 points). The sitemap has 356 pages in total: 43 each in English, Spanish and Romanian, including "X vs Manhwave" comparison pages (Torii, Ichigo, Scan Translator, IsManga, Immersive Translate, Papago, BallonsTranslator and others) and long-tail "how to translate Japanese/Korean manga" pages. 227 Polish pages, 174 of which are "<title> po polsku" (One Piece, Solo Leveling, Chainsaw Man and others), batch-generated in early November. This is programmatic SEO. But searching Brave for "solo leveling po polsku", "manga translator extension chrome" and "best ai manga translator 2026", manhwave.com doesn't appear in the top 10 results, so the SEO isn't driving traffic yet.
  5. Self-run social accounts (small reach): a 40-second YouTube tutorial (7kJsxyeU-Sc, about 210 views per recall cards); an Instagram account @manhwa_manga_translator; a Facebook page with 10-02 post, zero comments. TikTok search for "manhwave" returns no relevant videos (TikHub); X has zero mentions in the last 60 days (x-radar).
  6. Third-party listicle: techgyd.com published "6 Best Manga Translation Tools" on 10-27, listing Manhwave as one of 6 picks and describing it as suited to "readers who read on official platforms". The first pick is IsManga, so it reads like a sponsored IsManga piece. Whether Manhwave paid for its spot is unverified.
  7. Not found: no Manhwave ads in the Meta, Google or TikTok ad libraries. Our ad library only tracks products on our list, so not finding it doesn't mean it isn't advertising. Product Hunt, HN and Reddit also turned up nothing.

5. Differentiation

  • Local processing, different cost structure: detection, OCR, image cleanup and text placement all run on the user's computer (146 MiB package), and only the extracted text (sometimes with a low-resolution preview image) is sent to an LLM. Most rivals upload whole page images to servers running vision models and charge per page or per image. Manhwave charges by text, claims "about 1 cents per chapter", and its free weekly allowance is more generous than most of its rivals'.
  • Privacy and permissions: page images are not uploaded, and the manifest has no all-sites access. That appeals to people who care about privacy or who read on official paid platforms.
  • Text placement quality: after cleanup, text is set back into bubbles in a manga-style font, with three font styles and hover-to-see-original. Google Lens and Ichigo only overlay translations on top of the image.
  • Positioned as an official reading site: explicitly names WEBTOON, Tapas, Tappytoon, Manta and says "Support creators", steering clear of the grey image of pirate sites.
  • Bets on minor languages: Polish comes first (BLIK, złoty, 227 Polish-language pages), then Spanish and Romanian. The English market is crowded, Polish readers have long lacked official translations, and there is little competition there.

Are these what's driving its growth? Not so far. Local processing and cost advantages only show up once users have actually tried it and word of mouth spreads, and no organic discussion has turned up yet. The growth so far came from review-stuffing in the first weeks plus App Store search. And "local-first" isn't unique either: Kites launched 9 days earlier and is pitching Local-First too.

6. How many people know it

Few people know about it yet. Zero mentions on X, nothing on Reddit or in the press; revenue isn't public and payments aren't connected; manhwave.com doesn't appear in TrustMRR (the indie database). The only external mention is a listicle on techgyd.

7. Copycats

No one is copying it directly yet. Its playbook (extensions + a self-run "best of the year" ranking + "vs competitor" comparison pages) is already standard in this category: Madomi (pawakalabs), ai-manga-translator.com and Immersive Translate all publish similar rankings.

8. What others can borrow

  • Push the heavy work onto the device: bundle ONNX/WebGPU models in the extension for detection, OCR and inpainting, so the server only pays for the text tokens of the large model. Unit cost drops to a fraction of competitors', which leaves room for more aggressive pricing and free tiers. The same cost structure works for other "image + text" use cases (image translation, screenshot translation, product image localization).
  • Programmatic SEO in minor languages: batch-build pages around long-tail "<popular title> po polsku" style queries (title + language), capturing search traffic in markets beyond English; pair with local payment methods (BLIK) to lower the barrier to paying.
  • Build the site before the store listing: have the website and comparison articles up 5 months in advance, so the extension has landing pages, comparison pages and tutorials from day one. This suits extensions that expect SEO to build slowly.
  • Cautionary lesson: review-stuffing can prop up early store rankings, but the store removes some of them and it doesn't fix retention. After the push, organic growth ran at single to tens of installs per day.

9. Still unclear

  • Where 10-16's +175 users in a single day came from (paid acquisition, a push, or some unindexed community post).
  • Who the team is and where they're based (a UK address plus a Polish-language site suggests a Polish team; this is inferred).
  • The conversion rate to paid once payments go live, and whether 50 free credits per week mean most people never pay.
  • Where users are located by country (the store doesn't disclose this), and whether Polish SEO can drive real volume.
  • The YouTube API didn't work this time, so tutorial view counts reuse the approximately 210 views from the recall card and haven't been re-checked.
