Turning exam results into a FIFA pack opening: the Dutch high-schooler "Cijfer Reveal" grew to 10k in a week, then stalled
What it is A Dutch-language Chrome extension that hides your new grades on the Magister school portal, then reveals them through mini-games like penalty shootouts, spin wheels, and card pack openings.
Why it took off Early October was the first round of grades after school started, and EA FC 27 had just launched. An old TikTok meme, "opening grades like packs," got boosted by a batch of similar extensions at the same time, and its name is exactly what students search for, so it caught the wave.
CHow you could ride it Don't do the Netherlands; go to where the grade portals are concentrated and nobody has built yet (Belgium's Smartschool, Nordic school platforms). Build one extension that covers all the local platforms, run a TikTok account posting screen recordings daily, and time it to the next grade-release period. Treat it as a distribution exercise, not a business.

A TikTok account with only 414 followers turned Dutch students checking their grades into a football-game card pack opening. A free Chrome extension grew from 1k to 10k users in 5 days. But it rode a student-wide wave rather than its own merit: in the same month, five or six identical extensions appeared, the latecomers overtook it, and it charges nothing. Below, I explain how it got started, why it stalled, and which parts of this playbook are worth taking.
"Still as fun as ever"
In 2026 Sep 12, shortly after Dutch secondary school started, the TikTok account @cijferreveal posted a video captioned only "mooie start zoals altijd 😂" ("nice start as always"), showing a student "opening" their new grades in Magister. The video got 100k views and 3,904 likes; the account's other videos mostly got a few hundred to a thousand views (TikTok, 11-06).
In early Oct 6, it posted again: "Uit op magister en somtoday" (out on both Magister and Somtoday), 60k views. Over the next 5 days, its Chrome extension Cijfer Reveal voor Magister grew from about 1 thousand users to 10k (extops.dev curve; the Chrome Store user count is approximate).
As usage grew, the extension started breaking. In Oct 9, a user named Ryan left a review: "werkt niet goed ik zie alleen maar onvoldoendes" (doesn't work well, I only see failing grades), which 18 people marked helpful. More serious complaints followed: "after the update my grades won't load, nothing I do works" (Mike Zhan, 10-08) and "I've been connected to Magister for 10 minutes and nothing works" (Gijs, 10-09). The developer replied to reviews in Oct 12 saying "it's fixed," and the same day posted "Cijfer Reveal werkt weer 💪" (it works again) on TikTok, which got 1,167 views. The rating fell from 4.25 to 3.44, then recovered to 3.65 by early November (23 reviews, Chrome Web Store). User count has been stuck at 11k since Oct 10, and the same figure appeared every day from Nov 1 to 6.
What it is
Magister is the most widely used grades and learning portal in Dutch secondary schools; students check it when new grades come out. The extension only runs on magister.net. It reads your real new grades, hides them, and lets you reveal them through mini-games: penalty shootouts, spin wheels, opening suitcases, and football player cards. The store description's first line is "Maak van saaie cijferchecks een game" (turn boring grade checks into a game). After reveals you earn coins and unlock themes, and you can build a "grade eleven" lineup or play Cijferduels against classmates.
The developer account is also called "Cijfer Reveal" and uses a gmail address. There's no website, and the privacy policy is hosted on a GitHub Gist, so it looks like an individual or student project (inferred). The same account released a Somtoday version in Oct 6 (Somtoday is another major Dutch grades portal, 2,000 users), and an Android version on Google Play in Oct 10. Everything is free, with no in-app purchases and no paid options at all.
Why early October
It was listed in Jun 12, around the Dutch end-of-year exam period and the World Cup opening. The developer posted videos daily to ride trends ("POV: you have to score to pass"), yet by late September it had only about 1 thousand users. The real surge came from Oct 7 to 11, when several things collided:
- Grade-release period. Early October was when the first round of tests after school started came out, and checking grades was the most nerve-wracking thing for students that week.
- Pack opening was already everyday life for this crowd. EA FC 27 launched in late September, and 13–17-year-old boys were opening card packs every day.
- The meme was already proven. Since 2022, students had been hand-making FIFA pack-opening videos from their Magister grades on TikTok, with single videos getting 20k to 190k views (accounts like magisterpackopening123). The extension just turned hand-edited clips into a one-click tool, and the result is naturally suited to screen-recording for TikTok, so every user was making content for it.
- The whole category blew up the same week. The TikTok account of rival Magister Ultimate Team posted a teaser on Oct 2 that got 645k views; another competitor, CijferPacks, launched in Oct 5 and grew from 1 thousand to 6 thousand in 10-08–10-10 days, with a curve nearly identical to Cijfer Reveal's (extops.dev).
The most important point is this: what drew people in was the concept of "opening grades like packs" itself, not this particular product. Its advantage was the name. "Cijfer Reveal voor Magister" is exactly the search term students type, and it ranks at the top on both the Chrome Store and web search.
Where users come from
| Channel | Evidence | Role |
|---|---|---|
| Daily posting on its own TikTok account | 414 followers, 43 videos, plays all driven by the recommendation feed; 9-12 one at 100k, 10-06 another at 60k, right on the heels of the surge (TikTok, 11-06) | Confirmed, the spark |
| Rival videos heated up the category | @magisterultimateteam single videos at 645k and 617k; @magisterpacks one video at 139k | Confirmed, main cause |
| The name is the search term | Searching "Cijfer Reveal Magister extensie" on the web returns it first; #cijferreveal was already a hashtag Dutch university students used to share their grades | Inferred |
| Chrome Store "related items" | Similar extensions showed up on each other's detail pages, so when one took off it pulled the others along | Confirmed, minor effect |
| Word of mouth from creators | A TikTok video says "the plugin author is @cijferreveal, it's not an ad" | Author and view counts not found |
No paid ads, no press coverage, and zero discussion on X in 90 days. This only circulated in Dutch high school students' TikTok.

| CijferPacks voor Magister, Somtoday en Osiris | 10-05 | 20k users, 4.78 stars (55 reviews) | One extension covers three platforms (including Osiris, used by universities), with FIFA-style player reveal animations; it has already surpassed it |
| Magister Ultimate Team | 10-10 | 10k users, 4.28 rating | Copies FIFA's Ultimate Team almost wholesale: squads, chemistry, transfer market, friends. Updates frequently, TikTok account has 4,988 followers |
| Somtoday Pack Opener | 10-07 | 7,000 users and still growing | Only does Somtoday, one pack at a time, simplest of all |

| Study Tools voor Magister | 2023-04 | 100k users, 4.48 rating | Not a game. A practical tool that calculates averages and does statistics |
It was among the earliest in this category, with the most mini-games, and an Android version too, but none of that translated into a lead. Growth stalled, its rating is among the lowest in its group, and the cause is that the October 8 update broke login. These plugins scrape grades from school platform pages, so any platform redesign breaks them, and this crowd switches to other extensions the moment one breaks.
Where's the money: none
It's free, with no in-app purchases, no official website, and no one has shown any revenue. Users are 12 to 17-year-old students, who are not a paying audience; the product depends on the school platform and can be called out by the platform or schools at any time. Belgium's public broadcaster VRT reported in June of 2026 on another third-party Smartschool plugin that impersonated the official one and collected national ID numbers. That's unrelated to this one, but it shows that "school platform plugins" as a category attract scrutiny. Magister's official Cijfertijd feature lets schools decide when grades become visible to students, addressing the same anxiety from the opposite direction; the official version has no gamification.
What you can take from it
This product itself isn't worth following, but the formula is: turn a number people will see anyway into a screen-recordable gacha ritual. Grades, health checkups, exam scores, weekly running reports, monthly bills, investment gains: anything users nervously wait for, where the reveal screen looks good enough to share, and users become the distribution channel themselves.
The tactic is worth noting too: a TikTok account with few followers posts daily, rides seasonal trends (the World Cup, a new FIFA release, exam week), and waits for the feed to push one video. Name it with the exact word users search for.
If it were you
C. Learn from it, but following is not worth it. Five or six players crowded into this niche within a month, and the later ones did better. The category has no path to revenue, the users are minors, and it will fade once the trend passes.
- Who it suits: indie developers who want to practice TikTok cold-start and the "screen recording as distribution" playbook, treating it as a distribution exercise rather than expecting income. Ideally someone who went to school in the local market and understands student culture.
- Who it doesn't suit: anyone who wants a real business; anyone who doesn't speak the local language or know the student scene; anyone unwilling to constantly fix bugs when school platforms change.
- How to do it: don't build another Dutch Magister/Somtoday clone. Pick a market where grading platforms are concentrated and nobody has built yet. Flemish-speaking Belgium's Smartschool is a recent candidate (locally it's called "punten", not "cijfers", and students already post grade reveals under #puntenreveal on TikTok). But in November 5 someone already launched a "Smartschool Punten Case" (0 users), so the window is narrow. Beyond that are the Nordics (platforms like Finland's Wilma or Norway's Vigilo) or other countries' school platforms. Wherever platforms are concentrated and students talk about grade reveals, go there (inference, not checked one by one). Follow the CijferPacks approach: one plugin covering all major local platforms, polished reveal animations, and stable login and data reading.
- How to acquire users: open a TikTok account and, starting two weeks before launch, post daily "opening grades" screen recordings, with captions written in the way local students talk. Name it with the words local students search for. No paid ads needed.
- When to go: before the next grade-release period. Belgian and Dutch end-of-term exams run from December to January, so launch before Christmas; if you miss that, the next chance is the June end-of-term exams.
- Signs I'm wrong: (1) if some of these Dutch players added paid features (skins, card packs, memberships) and users kept growing, it means these students will pay, so raise the grade; (2) conversely, if the user counts of these players stopped growing after the January release wave, the wave has passed, and copying it anywhere will only yield a one-off spike; (3) if Magister or Smartschool blocks this kind of plugin, the whole path closes.

Bottom line
It has nothing unique. It rode an old Dutch high school TikTok meme ("Magister pack opening": turning grade releases into an FIFA card-pack opening, hand-edited videos since 2022) that got turned into a one-click tool. In early 2026-10, when the first exam round after the school year started and EA FC 27 had just launched, a batch of similar extensions went up within about the same week. This one was among them and rode that wave from 1k to 10k. Differentiation is weak, and after 10-11 it flatlined at 10k. The later CijferPacks (20k, 4.8 stars) and Magister Ultimate Team (10k, 28 days since launch) have already matched or passed it. This was a wave of student-driven hype, not a business that keeps users because of the product itself.
What it is
- Runs only on
*.magister.net(permissions: storage plus 1 site rules). It reads your real new grades on Magister (the most common grades and study platform in Dutch high schools), hides them first, then reveals them through mini-games like penalty shootouts, spin wheels, pack openings, and "football cards". You earn coins, unlock themes, and can build a "grade eleven" squad and play Cijferduels battles. - Developer "Cijfer Reveal", gmail address ([email protected]), not a business, no website, privacy policy hosted on a GitHub Gist. The same account also has "Cijfer Reveal voor Somtoday" (2,000 users, 2026-10-06 listed), and an Android version on Google Play, nl.cijferreveal.app (indexed by AppBrain; the developer's TikTok says "now live on the Play Store" 10-10).
- Doesn't charge: no in-app purchases, no payment language in the description, and no website (chromestore library).

- Rating dropped from 4.25 to 3.44: negative reviews clustered in 10-08–10-09 (Mike Zhan, Thijs, Gijs and others said "after the update grades won't load and it can't connect to Magister"), and the developer 10-12 replied to each one with "fixed" (store review page, hl=nl).

Bottom line: it's not that there are no competitors, but a cluster of near-identical ones, and the later entrants did it better. On Chrome it was the earliest in its category (launched in June, while the others came in October), but launching first didn't translate into a clear lead.
Where users come from
- The developer's own TikTok account @cijferreveal (confirmed): 414 followers, 43 videos, 11.3K likes. 6-12 It started posting daily on launch day, riding the World Cup and exam season ("POV: you need to score to pass", "Kevin Strootman", "hope they play Tunisia like this"). Most videos got only 500–1,000 views, with an occasional breakout (6-19 hit 58K). After school started, 9-12's "mooie start zoals altijd" got 100K views, and 10-06's "Magister and Somtoday are both out" got 60K views, just before the surge around 10-07–10-11 (TikHub, fetch_user_post_videos). Few followers and views driven almost entirely by the recommendation feed: a classic "small account posts, algorithm pushes" pattern.
- The whole category heated up on TikTok together (confirmed, and the main driver): competitor @magisterultimateteam 10-02 teaser at 645K views, 10-24 at 617K, 11-02 at 313K; @magisterpacks 10-07 at 139K; a repost titled "Magister pack opening is crazy" at 172K. These videos introduced Dutch secondary students to the idea of a grade pack-opening extension, and anyone searching "cijfer reveal" would naturally find the most literal name for it. "Cijfer Reveal voor Magister" is itself the search term, which gives it an edge in the Chrome Store and TikTok search (in jina searches for "Cijfer Reveal Magister extensie" it ranks first). The recall card logs the TikTok topic "cijfer reveal voor magister" at about 4.6M views; I couldn't verify that number independently.
- Third-party creators (partly confirmed): a TikTok discover page has "Dit is toch mega cool? … Maker van de extension: @cijferreveal *GEEN ADVERTENTIE*" (not an ad), showing organic, unpaid word of mouth. I didn't get the author or view count.
- The "cijferreveal" tag already existed among university students (background): grade-reveal videos are an established niche among Dutch university students (especially law students). ninahouston had one at 275K, feee.x one at 200K, and #cijferreveal already had traffic. The extension borrowed the word, but its users are secondary students.
- Store recommendations (confirmed, smaller effect): these similar extensions appear together in the Chrome Store's "related" section (Study Tools, Magister Ultimate Team, Somtoday Pack Opener, the developer's own Somtoday version). When one gets popular, the others get pulled along.
- No ads or press coverage found, and no discussion on X (x-radar shows "cijfer reveal" and "magister pack" at 90 posts each over the last 0 days).
Why it took off
- Timing: the first week of October is when Dutch secondary schools release grades from the first tests after school starts and during exam season. EA FC 27 (released late September) was also bringing pack opening back into the daily lives of 13–17-year-old boys. The June launch also landed right at the end-of-year exam season plus the World Cup. When grades come out and how to read them is already the thing students care about most.
- The meme was proven long ago: 2022 years ago people were hand-editing Magister pack-opening videos, with single videos reaching tens of thousands to over a hundred thousand views. The extension just turned hand-editing into a one-click generator, and what it produces is naturally suited to screen recording for TikTok, so every user is creating content for it.
- Concentrated Dutch Magister user base: Magister is the mainstream platform for Dutch secondary schools, so one extension covers most of the target audience. Adding a Somtoday version essentially covers all Dutch secondary students.
- Free, works as soon as it's installed: no account, no payment ("Compleet gratis" is a point its TikTok captions repeat).
Differentiation
- Compared with similar products, its differences are only these: earliest launch (June, while rivals came in October), the name is the search term, a wider range of mini-games (penalties, wheel, opening; not just card packs), plus coins, themes, the Cijferduels head-to-head mode, and an Android app.
- But none of these explain why it took off. From 6 through September it was already on Chrome but only grew from 0 to 1K. The real surge came in 10-07–10-11, the week the whole category exploded, when CijferPacks grew from 0 to 6K in the same week. The trend itself was pulling users in, not anything unique to this product.
- After reaching 10K it stalled, while CijferPacks (across three platforms, rated 4.8) and Somtoday Pack Opener kept growing. It rates 3.65, among the lowest in its category, because an update in 10-08 broke login and grade loading. It has already fallen behind within its category.
Visibility and copycats
- Revenue: none, and nobody has posted any. Media: no coverage found. (Belgian VRT 2026-06-18 reported on a different extension, "Smartschool Radar", which posed as official and collected national ID numbers. It's unrelated, but it shows that third-party extensions for school platforms can get called out by the platform and by the press.) X: 0 posts.
- It only circulates in a small circle of Dutch secondary students on TikTok, and few people outside it know about it. But that circle is already crowded: at least 5 similar products on Chrome (CijferPacks, Magister Ultimate Team, Somtoday Pack Opener, the open-source js664 version, and Somtoday Packs 11-05, just launched), and Belgium has produced Smartschool Punten Case.
What to borrow
- The formula: turn a number you'll see anyway into a screen-recordable gacha ritual. It works for any "results reveal" scenario: grades, health checkups, exam scores, Strava weekly reports, monthly bank statements, stock P&L. Users recording their own reveals is the distribution.
- Playbook: a small TikTok account posting daily, riding seasonal hot topics (World Cup, new FC release, exam season), waiting for one video to be pushed by the recommendation feed; name it with the words users actually search.
- Localization: small countries with highly concentrated school platforms (Dutch Magister/Somtoday, Belgian Smartschool, Nordic Wilma/Vigilo, etc.) are an unclaimed gap. The recall card mentions "smartschool cijfer pack opening" at about 18M views (unverified), and Belgian Smartschool still has no decent equivalent extension. That's the most direct opportunity to copy.
- Lesson: this kind of thing has no payment path, its users are minors, and it depends on the school platform's login state and APIs (it breaks with every redesign, which is exactly what caused the bad reviews this time), and it dies once the trend fades. Good for practicing distribution; not a business.
Unknowns
- The recall card's "TikTok topic about 4.6M / 18M views" figures were not independently verified.
- Android install count not found (our googleplay library doesn't index nl.cijferreveal.app).
- The recall card says the publisher has 3 listings in total (including the Canvas version at 9 users); our library only found Magister and Somtoday.
- After October, whether it moved between 10k and 20k up or down can't be read from the store's rounded figures; extops 10-25 picked up one reading of 9k, so it may be churning.
- The author and view count for the third-party "GEEN ADVERTENTIE" video were not retrieved.
