# An Indian student built a player add-on for Physics Wallah: a rename took the store search, 4 months, 1,000 users

**What it is** A free Chrome extension for the Physics Wallah lecture player: 4x speed, skips the teacher's silences, locks 720p, and hides chat and pop-ups.

**Why it took off** PW students commonly speed through lectures, but the native player caps at 2x and drops video quality. The author, August, renamed it "Enhancer for Physics Wallah", so a store search for the platform name only matched this one, and then posted to exam-prep subreddits and filled the store with 1-day pop-ups asking for reviews.

**C** **How you could follow it** Don't build another PW tool. Pick a different vertical platform with many users and a weak web player (other lecture sites, corporate training, certification platforms). Rebuild the open-source speed and silence-skip code against its player, title it "Enhancer for [Platform]", and emphasize open source, minimal permissions and no ban risk.

Grade C: the "PW" search term is already taken, the ceiling is a few thousand desktop students, and there's little money. What's worth copying is the single-platform enhancer template, but each new platform will probably top out at a few thousand users too. Few people know about it yet

1,000 users · rating 4.866666666666666 (87)

Enhancer for Physics Wallah is a free, open-source Chrome extension that remakes the web player of India's largest exam-prep lecture platform, Physics Wallah (pw.live): 4x speed, auto-skipping when the teacher is silent, locking quality at 720p, and hiding chat and pop-ups. By renaming itself it captured the unclaimed store search term "Physics Wallah", and its rating rate reached 8.7%. But users stopped growing after reaching 1,000 in October. What's worth studying is the "platform name + Enhancer" template, not the extension itself.

### "works great, hoping pw doesnt ban me"

On 2026 Aug 18, a student named Wahidur Rahman gave it five stars on the Chrome Store with one line: "works great, hoping pw doesnt ban me". The author replied the same day: "Zero risk of bans brother! All changes are strictly 100% on your local browser screen."

A week ago, another student, Sulaksh Sharma, posted a request in all caps: the PW quality button works, but "EVEN AT HIGH QUALITY IT DROPS UPTO 144p", even at high quality it falls to 144p, and asked for a button to lock quality. The author replied that the last few versions already include it.

These two reviews pretty much sum up this extension: students find the PW player hard to use, and they're scared of getting banned for installing a third-party add-on. The author is vishwa-vsr on GitHub. The account was created in May 2026 years ago and has 9 followers, which suggests an Indian student or a recent graduate indie dev (my guess). The headline on the website reads "Everything the PW player should have had."

### What it is

After installing it, open a recorded lecture on pw.live and the player gets these extras:

- **Skip silence** : speeds up automatically when the teacher stops to write on the board or waits for questions, and returns to normal speed as soon as someone speaks.

- **Up to 4x speed** : native PW tops out at 2x. Keys H and J adjust speed, and holding space fast-forwards.

- **Lock 720p** : no more dropping to blurry quality or buffering for half a minute.

- **Focus mode** : one click hides live chat, the doubt-solving box, Ask AI and various icons, and blocks PW's own course promos and old poll pop-ups in recorded lectures.

- **Real finish time** : calculates what time you'll finish the lesson at your current speed. The site's original line: "so you know if you will finish before dinner".

- **Daily to-do** : it's given a Hindi name, "Padhle Dashboard" (roughly "go study first").

Completely free, no in-app purchases; the FAQ says it's "100% free and open-source" (MIT license). It requests only the storage permission, and all changes happen on the local page. Also available for Firefox and Edge.

### Why anyone would want it

A PW recorded lesson often runs two hours or more, with lots of dead air during board-writing and doubt-solving. Students preparing for JEE and NEET commonly watch at 2x, and PW's own Hindi YouTube Shorts even say "watch all lessons at 2x". But the PW player caps at 2x, drops quality and pushes promos.

General-purpose tools have existed for a while. Video Speed Controller has been on the store for 12 years with 3M users, and the open-source Skip Silence has 471 stars on GitHub; this extension's README also credits its audio-processing approach. The problem is that PW students don't know these tools exist, and aren't sure whether they work on pw.live or will break.

The comment requests are almost all specific: skip the intro and outro slides, mark each slide's timestamp on the progress bar, skip the Q&A. A student named Hitesh Raj wrote on Aug 31 that the teacher's Q&A is "ONLY FOR MOOD REFRESHING", so just skip it. The author shipped 25+ versions in 4 months, many of them straight from user issues.

### Where the 1,000 users came from

| Date | What happened | users | Rating count |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2026-07-08 | Launched, then called PW Control | | |
| 2026-08-01 | Renamed to Enhancer for Physics Wallah | | |
| 2026-08-27 | Added the "1-day pop-up asking for reviews" | | |
| 2026-08-31 | | 529 | 19 |
| 2026-09-15 | | 836 | 33 |
| 2026-10-05 | | 1,000 | |
| 2026-11-06 | | 1,000 | 87 (4.87 points) |

From late August to early October, users grew by roughly 13 a day (extops.dev curve); then nothing moved for a month. From Nov 1 to 6, the Chrome Store showed a steady 1,000. In late October a third-party tracker recorded 3,000 to 4,000, then it went back to 1,000, which looks like store-count jitter; this can't be verified. The Firefox version has 37 DAU (11-06), and the GitHub repo has 11 stars.

Users come mainly from three places.

**One: renaming to capture the search term.** When it launched in July it was called PW Control, and students couldn't find it. In August 1 it was renamed "Enhancer for Physics Wallah". Chrome Store titles carry a lot of weight, so when students search "physics wallah", this is the only match. Searching "Physics Wallah chrome extension speed" on a search engine, its store page is also the first result. The description is packed with exam-prep terms such as JEE, NEET, NDA, UPSC and Class 10/11/12.

**Two: exam-prep subreddits.** r/JEENEETards, r/CBSE and r/MEDICOreTARDS each had a post with nearly the same title: "someone added auto skip silence to the Physics Wallah extension", written in a bystander's voice. The r/CBSE post included a 31-second demo video. Three subreddits with the same title suggests one person posted them all (inferred). r/JEE also had a fix announcement posted by the author as a developer.

**Three: review pop-ups, plus replying to every comment.** The source code shows a five-star card pops up after 1 days of installation; clicking "later" delays it by 3 days, and it only stops once you've rated or clicked "don't show again". The 27 version added this in August, and ratings went from 19 to 87, a rating rate of about 8.7%, versus 1% to 2% for typical extensions. So the high rating count is mainly due to this design, not organic demand. The author replies to every review in a friendly tone, such as "Ayy Alex massive W review", and the site then displays these reviews as social proof.

Also, the website published 18 to 19 October a batch of 6 feature guides for SEO, and got the store's "Established publisher" badge in September. No mentions were found on X, YouTube creators or ads.

### Why it stalled at 1,000

**One: a small entry point.** PW says it has 4.46M paying students (FY25, PW's own figure), and this extension reaches less than 0.1% of them. Most PW students watch lectures in the mobile app, so the extension only reaches the small share who watch on a desktop browser.

**Two: the search term only brings so much traffic.** The number of people who actively search for "Physics Wallah" in the store is limited, and the wave from the rename has already been used up.

**Three: no revenue.** Users are Indian students with low willingness to pay, and the author has said it will stay free forever.

### Who it's competing with

| Name | Form | Scale | How it differs |
|---|---|---|---|
| Video Speed Controller | Chrome Extension | 3M users | General speed control, with no PW-specific quality lock, distraction removal or silence skipping; PW students can't find it |
| Skip Silence(vantezzen) | Open-source plugins | GitHub 471 star | General silence skipping; this extension borrows its approach |
| PW's official player | built-in to platform | All PW users | Up to 2x, with no silence skipping, quality lock or focus mode |
| Tampermonkey speed script shared on r/JEE | Userscripts | Post with 40 upvotes (2025-07) | Only 1 to 3x speed; requires installing Tampermonkey and enabling developer mode |
| rePW, PWUtils and others | GitHub side project | 0 to 16 stars | Scattered features; not on the store, or no longer maintained |

There are plenty of PW-specific tools, but they're userscripts or half-finished GitHub projects. The only one officially listed on the Chrome Store, with "Physics Wallah" in its name and still being updated, is this one; no copycats have been spotted yet.

The same template has been used elsewhere. Doubtnut Uncle Mute removes the intro for another Indian education app, Doubtnut, first listed in October 2025, with 1,000 users and 138 ratings. Pi Lens makes video notes and past papers for JEE and NEET on YouTube, with 30k users.

### If it were you

**C: Learning something here isn't worth the cost of building a plugin just for this.** PW is already a taken search term, and the ceiling is a few thousand desktop students, with no money to collect. The part worth copying is the "platform name + Enhancer" play: find a platform with lots of users and a weak web player, rebuild the common features around its player, and put the platform name in the title. But each of these platforms will probably only land in the few-thousand-user range.

**Who it's for** : student devs who want a first project with real users and reviews; people who already use a particular online course platform and know where its pain points are; people who want an open-source project for their resume.

**Who it's not for** : anyone who wants to make money from a plugin. Student users have low willingness to pay, and you'll have to keep fixing things every time the platform updates. If the platform adds 4x speed on its own one day, your reason for existing is gone.

**How to do it** : stop doing PW. Switch to another platform: India's Unacademy, Allen, Next Toppers, Vedantu, or online course platforms in other countries, corporate training platforms, certification question-bank sites. First check what the platform's web player is missing (speed caps, quality drops, too many pop-ups), build on open-source speed and silence-skipping code, and make the UI look native to the platform. Request only the storage permission, open-source it, and make the first FAQ answer "will I get banned?".

**How to get users** : title the store listing "Enhancer for [platform name]"; fill the description with the exam names and grade levels that platform's users search for; post a 30-second demo video in the subreddits, Telegram groups, and Discords where that platform's students gather; add a review prompt that pops up after 1 days of install, reply to every review, and ship the requests users make in the next version.

**When to move** : there's no hard window. Whoever claims the "platform name" keyword in the store first makes it hard for others to get in, so if you pick one, start early.

**Signs you've misread this** : ① this plugin gained over 5,000 users before year end, meaning PW's desktop user base is bigger than expected and a single-platform plugin has a higher ceiling worth taking seriously; ② PW itself raises speed to 4x and adds silence skipping, meaning the platform is pulling these features back in and the whole template stops working; ③ you build one of these for a platform and it still has fewer than 200 users two months after launch, meaning the "platform name" search term itself has little search volume.

### Bottom line

It's a "course player add-on" built for Physics Wallah (pw.live), India's largest exam-prep online course platform: 4x speed, automatic silence skipping, locked to 720p, removal of chat/pop-up/ad distractions, and a study to-do list. Users come from PW students searching "Physics Wallah" in the Chrome store, plus posts in exam-prep subreddits like r/JEENEETards, r/JEE, and r/CBSE. It keeps users for two reasons: it does only the PW site, with deep adaptation; and the author updates often (4 months with 25+ releases). The review count looks high (about 8.7% of users left a rating), mainly from the review prompt that appears 1 days after install. **Strictly speaking, it hasn't really broken out yet** : about 1,000 users after 4 months. PW has 4.46M paying students, and penetration isn't even 0.1%. The user count has been roughly flat since early October.

- GitHub: 11 stars, 4 forks (2026-11-06). The author's other focus extension, Flow, has 30 stars, and the two appear as "related extensions" of each other in the store.

- Free: no in-app purchases, no pricing on the site, the FAQ says "100% free and open-source".

### II. Competitors

| Competitors | Where | Launched | Scale | How it differs |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Video Speed Controller(igrigorik) | Chrome | 2014 | 3M users | Generic speed control that works on any site. No PW-specific quality lock, distraction blocking, silence skipping, or to-do list. Students have to know it exists and test on their own whether it works on pw.live |
| Skip Silence (vantezzen, open-source) | Chrome/Firefox/Edge | 2019 | GitHub 471 star | Generic silence skipping. This extension's README explicitly credits its audio processing approach. This one writes its own captureStream fallback for the PW player and recognizes PW's native "hold 2x" |
| Jump Cutter | Chrome | 2020 | 10k users | Generic silence skipping, same as above, not built for PW |
| PW's official player | Big-company features | — | PW 4.46M paying users (data card) | Native speed only up to 2x and hold-to-2x (code comment "PW native 2x hold-click"), with no silence skipping, quality lock, or focus mode. This is exactly what the site's tagline means by "Everything the PW player should have had" |
| u/padhaikarlothoda's Tampermonkey speed script | Open-source / user script | 2025-07 | r/JEE post, 40 upvotes, 34 comments | Only 1x–3x speed and progress stats, requires installing Tampermonkey and enabling developer mode, high barrier |
| AnubhavSC/PW-progress-tweak | Open source | 2025-07 | 2 star | Converts remaining time by playback speed, single function |
| hazynyx/rePW | Open source | 2026-06 | 0 star | Claims TrueTime, heatmaps, and dark mode, but hasn't been updated since late June |
| adityarwt1/Pw-Study-Extension | Open source | 2025-03 | 0 star | Turns off chat, dark mode, not on the store |
| FireHead90544/PWUtils | Open source | 2022 | 16 star | Desktop widget, users must compile it with pyinstaller themselves |
| u/Single_Minute_1119's "super PW extension" | Post | 2026-05-26 | 4 likes | Focused on subtitle translation, no store listing seen |
| Similar template: Doubtnut Uncle Mute | Chrome | 2025-10 | 1,000 users, 138 rating | Removes the intro from another Indian education platform, Doubtnut. Same "single platform, single pain point" approach, with a higher review rate |
| Similar template: Pi Lens | Chrome | 2026-01 | 30k users | Makes JEE/NEET video content on YouTube (notes, past papers), doesn't touch PW |

Verdict: there are plenty of tools built for PW, but almost all are userscripts or half-finished GitHub projects. **The only one we found listed on the Chrome Web Store, with "Physics Wallah" in its name and still being updated** (chromestore library, full-text search on physics wallah / pw.live / penpencil). Generic speed and skip-silence extensions have been around for ages and have far bigger user bases, but they weren't built for PW.

### III. Growth levers (where users come from)

1. **Store search, gamed by renaming (confirmed)** . Launched in July as PW Control, renamed in Aug 1 to "Enhancer for Physics Wallah" (see git log). The Chrome Web Store weights titles heavily. Students searching "physics wallah" get only this one matching result (Jina search for "Physics Wallah chrome extension speed" ranks its store page first). The description is also stuffed with JEE, NEET, NDA, UPSC, Board exams, Class 10/11/12, and similar terms.

2. **Exam-prep Reddit communities (confirmed they exist, author unverified)** . r/JEENEETards "lowkey someone added auto skip silence to the Physics Wallah extension" (the data card says it was removed), r/CBSE "someone added auto skip silence…" (with a demo video of 0:31), r/MEDICOreTARDS "added auto skip silence to the Physics Wallah extension." The three titles are nearly identical and use a bystander voice ("someone added"), which looks like one person reposting across subreddits. There's also "guys are u facing any bug in enhancer for physics wallah" on r/JEE and r/JEENEETards, saying "we already fix this issue in v1.0.8.8." That reads as a developer announcing a fix. Reddit blocked our scraper, so we didn't read the post bodies or upvote counts.

3. **Review prompt after 1 days installed (confirmed)** . Source at src/popup/features/review/ReviewModal.tsx: after 1 days installed, a five-star card pops up. Clicking "later" brings it back in 3 days. It stops only after a review is left or "don't show again" is clicked. After Aug 27 added this, the rating count went from 19 to 88. The review rate is about 8.7%, well above the typical 1–2%, and this prompt is the main reason, not only fake reviews. The author replies to every review on the store in a friendly tone (e.g. "Ayy Alex massive W review"), and the website displays these reviews as social proof.

4. **Website SEO and blog (confirmed, effect unknown)** . enhancerforpw.vercel.app has schema.org rating markup. October 18–19 saw 6 feature guides published in one go, and the store links all carry utm_source=website.

5. **Store trust badge (confirmed)** . In Sep 9 it got the good publisher record; it now shows "Established publisher" (extops.dev). This helps students worried about "will I get banned by PW." The FAQ has a dedicated "Can my account get banned" entry, and the author has replied on the store that there is "zero risk of bans."

6. **Channels we couldn't check** : X (x-radar: 120 posts in 0 days), YouTube creators, paid ads. TikTok is banned in India, and searches there only return unrelated PW content.

### 4. Why it took off and why it sticks

- **Real need with a very specific pain point** . A single recorded PW lecture often runs about 2 hours, and a lot of time goes to the teacher writing on the board and waiting for questions. Exam-prep students commonly watch at 2x (PW's official Shorts on YouTube, like "सारे LECTURES 2x की SPEED पर," back this up). PW's native max is 2x, and the player shows ads, old live-poll popups, chat spam, and buffers on quality. The extension's features map one-to-one to these complaints, and it built what commenters asked for, like skipping the doubt-clearing segments and forcing video quality.

- **No one held the entry point** . The store had no dedicated PW extension before, and after the rename nearly all search traffic for the name went to it.

- **Low barrier, looks safe** . It's free and open source, and its manifest requests only the storage permission (extops: "cannot read the pages you open on its own"). All changes happen locally. Students' biggest fears are bans and privacy, and it addresses both.

- **High iteration rate** . More than 25 releases in 4 months (CHANGELOG runs from 1.0.0 to 1.1.0.6), 15–19 commits per month, and many come from user issues (#10 vote-popup hiding, #36 scroll sensitivity).

### 5. Differentiation

Its edge isn't technical. Speed control and skip-silence both have mature open-source implementations, and the project itself credits vantezzen/skip-silence. The real difference is that **it serves one platform and goes deep on that platform's player** : the quality menu and volume bubble match PW's native 2x badge in style, it recognizes PW's native press-and-hold 2x, it blocks PW's own course promotions and recorded-lecture polls, and it has a Hindi-named "Padhle Dashboard" to-do feature. The platform name is in the title, so store search finds it. That specificity is why it reached these 1,000 users: generic extensions have hundreds of times more users, but PW students can't find them, and they don't know whether those work on pw.live.

That specificity also caps it. PW students mostly watch on the mobile app, and an extension only reaches the small slice who use a desktop browser.

### 6. Visibility and copycats

- **Few people know about it yet** : it's free, there's no public revenue, no media or X accounts have covered it, and it has only appeared in a few exam-prep subreddits.

- Copycats: none seen. Tools built for PW existed before it (userscripts, rePW, PWUtils), but none were on the store. The "single-platform extension for an Indian education site" template is being used by others (Doubtnut Uncle Mute), but none are copying this one.

### VII. What to take away

1. **"Platform name + Enhancer"** : find a vertical platform with a large user base but a weak web player (Unacademy, Allen, Next Toppers, Vedantu, or education and corporate-training platforms in other countries), and repackage generic features (speed control, skip silence, locking video quality, removing distractions) for that platform's player. Use the platform name as the title to win store search.

2. Answer the users' biggest worry, "will I get banned," and the permissions question with open source, minimal permissions, and an FAQ together.

3. Ask for a review after 1 days installed, reply to every review, and ship user-requested features quickly. This process can push the review rate above 8%.

4. Making money needs a different approach: the target users are Indian students with low willingness to pay, and the author has stayed fully free throughout.

### 8. What's still uncertain

- Whether the 3k–4k users recorded by extops from October 24–30 were a real rise and fall or store counting noise is unverified.

- We didn't check how many users it has on Edge.

- We found no evidence that PW's teachers or community recommended it.
