Putting Moises into the YouTube page: a Filipino developer built the most feature-complete practice plugin, then users surged to 2,000 and fell back to 500
What it is A Chrome extension that shows chord fingerings and lyrics on YouTube while the video plays, with pitch shift, speed control, looping, and on-your-own-computer stem separation of songs into vocals, drums, bass, and 6 other tracks.
Why it took off It didn't really go viral: users came mainly from the author's posts in Filipino developer groups and musician groups, plus a recommendation from a Filipino programming blogger. A promotion wave in late October pushed it to 2,000, but people who installed it stopped using it within a week.
CHow to play it Don't build a fuller version of the same thing. Go after the entry point it's missing: narrow to a niche like worship songs or a single-language pop catalog, or turn every recognition result into a public "song title + chords" web page that collects search traffic, with the extension just keeping users around.

Chord Lens is a Chrome extension that shows chord fingerings and synced lyrics next to a YouTube video, and can split the song into 6 stems on your own computer. It launched in September and reached about 500 users and 20 five-star reviews in two months. Its feature set is broader than its rivals', but nearly all its users came from the author posting in Facebook groups one by one. A wave pushed it to 2,000 in late October, and within a week it fell back to the same level. This piece covers what it got right, why it didn't take off, and whether the space is still worth entering.
"Stop guessing"
In 2026 Oct 7, Pinoyfreecoder, a Facebook page teaching programming in the Philippines, posted a "community project" recommendation: "One of our viewers, Jethro Malate, sent us the ChordLens he built… Instead of always guessing what chords you're hearing, this tool makes it easier to identify chords and analyze songs." It closed with "Support projects that come out of our own community." The post got 77 reactions and 13 shares. One commenter asked: "parang Moises pero Chrome extension for YT?" (Like Moises, but a Chrome extension for YouTube?)
That comment describes the product more accurately than the store listing does. Before that, Jethro had already posted the same copy himself in App Builders PH, a Philippine developer group (Sep 19), in Guitar Lover (Oct 3, tagged #WorshipTeam, aimed at church worship teams), and in groups for musicians in Georgia, USA.
The store reviews come from the same crowd. Jester Miñon wrote on Sep 22: "ganda ng extension. Accurate chord finder" (great extension, accurate chord finder). Jeff Oliva wrote "the STEM tool was incredible!!!" On Nov 2, Michelle Grant commented that she had already subscribed to Pro.
What it is
After installing, open any YouTube video and the page shows the current and next chord. You can pick fingering diagrams for guitar, bass, ukulele, mandolin, or piano, or switch to Nashville numbers. Lyrics scroll with the song. It detects key and BPM automatically, and offers a capo transposer and chord simplification. You can change pitch without changing tempo, change tempo without changing pitch, loop an A-B section, and have a metronome follow the beat. The full chart can sit in a sidebar or be printed as a lead sheet.
The heaviest feature is stem separation: vocals, drums, bass, piano, guitar, and other, 6 stems computed on your own graphics card via WebGPU. You can solo or mute each one and make a backing track in one click. The official site says only the video ID is uploaded and key, speed, and stems are all computed locally. Beyond the extension there's a web Studio, a PWA for the phone home screen, and a Mac app that only supports Apple Silicon.
The listed developer is Freedom! Family Limited, a Hong Kong company running a YouTube creator network (MCN), formerly any.TV, with many Filipino staff on the team. How Jethro relates to the company (employee, internal incubation, or contractor) can't be determined from outside.

Figures before October come from the user curve on extops.dev. November figures come from daily Chrome Web Store scrapes.
The source of the first 400 users is clear: the author posting in groups, plus the Pinoyfreecoder recommendation. The curve rises steadily with no day skipped.
On the evening of Oct 18, the official page posted a 4-second Reel: "1,000 MUSICIANS. ONE BIG MILESTONE." It got 1,100 views and 18 shares, ending with "Help us reach the next 1,000!" Over the next 4 days users jumped from 523 to 2,000, followed by another post, "2K STRONG." Then within a week it fell back to 525, and in those 4 days only 1 more ratings were added.
There's no direct evidence of how that wave came about. The Reels may have been paid promotion, a large group may have shared them, or Freedom!'s own creator network may have sent traffic (inference). What's clear is the outcome: the Chrome Store's user count roughly reflects activity over the past week. A climb followed by a drop back to the same level means these users installed it, tried it, and stopped using it.
Other channels are nearly empty: over the last 90 days, searching "chordlens" on X returned 0 posts. There's nothing on Reddit, Product Hunt, or Hacker News, no related TikTok videos, and no press coverage. Two official YouTube Shorts exist, with unknown view counts.
One more signal: 20 reviews for 500 users, a review rate of about 4%, where a typical extension sees 0.5% to 1%. Filipino names dominate the reviews, which fits with early users being mostly acquaintances and community members.
How it makes money
| Tier | Pricing | What you get |
|---|---|---|
| Free | 0 | Songs under 7 minutes, 20 new chord analyses per month; stem separation limited to 2 minutes, 5 times per day; no ads |
| Premium | $3.99/mo, $39.90/yr | Unlock chord analysis limits |
| Pro | $4.99/mo (launch price, then $5.99), $49.90/yr | Adds 20 cloud stem separations per day; a third-party intro page says there's a 14-day free trial without a card |
chordlens.app, 11-05.
The pricing has two things worth copying. First, the cost structure: free-tier stem separation runs on the user's own GPU, so each extra free user costs almost nothing, and server costs are only incurred for paid cloud separation. Second, the anchor: Moises' Pro is $5.99, Chord Lens' Pro launch price is exactly $1 cheaper, and it's only $1 more than its own Premium.
Revenue isn't public. Reviews mention people subscribing to Pro, but it's unlikely that 500 weekly active users support much subscription revenue. Some users have also asked in reviews for the free tier to drop usage limits and limit features instead.
Who it's competing with
| Name | Form | Scale | How it differs |
|---|---|---|---|
| Moises | App / web / desktop | Claims 50M+ users, Pro $5.99/mo | The leader in stems and chords and pitch change, but you have to import the audio first rather than use it in place on YouTube |
| Chordify | Web / app, plus a Chrome extension | Older coverage claims 2M monthly active users; the extension has 5,000 users | You jump to its site or app to see the chart; the extension only does pitch change |
| Ultimate Guitar Instant Chords | Chrome Extension | 100k users, 3.2 rating | Matches the song playing against UG's human-made chords; covers, live versions, and obscure songs often don't match, and there's no stem separation |
| Transpose | Chrome Extension | 1M users | Only pitch change, speed, and loop, no chord output |
| Riffloop | Chrome extension + web + Android | 876 users, 19 ratings | Launched in June with nearly the same idea: a practice desk under YouTube with local 6-track separation, chords, key shifting and looping, and a heavier SEO landing page. Chord Lens has fuller lyrics and multi-instrument fingerings. |
| GuitarBear, Stem Supply, Tonify, and assorted vocal-remover extensions | Chrome Extension | 100 to 5,000 users each | Guitar practice only, or stem separation only |
Chrome Web Store, 11-01 to 11-07; Moises and Chordify figures are their own claims.
This table shows two things. First, the demand is real: Transpose alone reached 1M users just for pitch change, speed, and looping, and UG's extension has 3.2k users at a 100 rating. Second, the combination of "chords on YouTube in place plus stem separation" has produced at least two full versions in 2026 years, Riffloop and Chord Lens, and both stalled at a few hundred users. The idea isn't scarce. What's scarce is a way to pull people in and keep them. No big brand has built this shape yet, so the gap is there, but the people in it aren't getting fed either.
Why the most complete feature set didn't take off
Feature depth solves "is it good once installed," and the reviews show it does: some people used it to find chords for songs with no published charts online. But practice happens one song at a time. Today you want to learn this song, so you search "song title chords," get UG and Chordify chart pages, and nobody thinks of the extension they installed weeks ago. Chord Lens has no such search entry point, so every user depends on the author pulling them in group by group, and they leave once they've learned a song. The 2,000-to-500 drop is that problem in magnified form.
If it were you
C: You can learn from it, but copying it isn't worth much. Two full-featured extensions already do "YouTube plus chords plus local stem separation," and both are stuck at a few hundred users. Acquisition is what's holding them back, not features. Alongside them stand UG (an extension with 100k users), Moises, and Chordify, and search terms like "song title + chords" are already saturated by their chart pages. Another feature-matched extension would most likely stall at a few hundred users too.
Who it suits: people who already have a musician audience, such as a guitar teaching channel with tens of thousands of subscribers, a worship team training organization, or a musical instrument e-commerce seller; or developers who can build lots of SEO pages and treat the extension as a retention tool rather than an acquisition tool.
Who it doesn't suit: solo developers hoping to grow mainly from organic store traffic, and anyone without GPU optimization experience who can't handle a 70 MB model bundle and browser compatibility issues.
How to do it: stop building a "fuller" version and go after the half it skipped: the entry point. There are two paths worth testing. ① Change the audience and serve a single niche, such as worship songs (fixed setlists, practiced every week, used collectively by church teams), or a single-language pop catalog (Filipino OPM, Indonesian, Vietnamese songs, which human-made UG charts don't cover and AI recognition fills). ② Turn each recognition result into a public "song title + chords" web page, so users' own use builds search entry points for you, with the extension only handling playback alongside YouTube.
How to acquire users: for a niche, go where its people gather: church music ministry Facebook groups, partnerships with guitar cover channels on YouTube. For the SEO route, build batches of song chord pages, with a "play along on YouTube" extension button at the bottom of each. Keep the free tier on local compute like it does, so you don't pay for servers.
When the window closes: if Moises, Chordify, or UG ships an official "chords and stems in place on YouTube" extension, the window for this exact shape closes. It's still open now.
What would mean this read is wrong: ① Chord Lens or Riffloop grows past 5,000 users through organic traffic before year-end, showing features alone can drive growth, in which case head-on competition becomes worth it; ② the October 2,000 wave is shown to have come from Freedom!'s own network, and a repeat push also retains users, meaning the path needs channel resources that individuals can't match; ③ a large brand releases a similar extension first.

Chord Lens: YouTube Chord Finder, Lyrics & Stem Splitter (Chrome extension) research report

Bottom line
Chord Lens never really took off. It's a "YouTube practice workstation" extension from Freedom! Family Limited (formerly any.TV), a Hong Kong YouTube MCN with a lot of Filipino staff. It puts chords, synced lyrics, pitch and tempo control, and in-browser WebGPU stem separation right on the YouTube page. Nearly all its users came from manual promotion by Filipino developer and musician Jethro Malate in Facebook groups and on his page, plus shares in local dev communities. Daily users peaked at roughly 2K in early October (18–22), then dropped back to about 500, and rating counts barely moved, which suggests most of that wave installed and never stayed. Its edge is "most features in one extension," but at least Riffloop, GuitarBear, and Stem Supply have been doing the same thing for 2026 years at similar scale (a few hundred users). This isn't a category anyone has won yet.

- Version 0.29.3,2026-11-02 updated, 70 MB, English only, marked with in-app purchases. The store page lists the developer as Freedom! Family Limited, [email protected], not a trader (Chrome Web Store page, 2026-11-06). extops shows the developer account as "freedom-labs" with an Established publisher badge.
- There's an error in the data card: the recall reason says freedom-labs also has "Chrome Piano (116 users) and Song Finder (1000 users, 2.88 stars)" forming a matrix. I checked the chromestore library by developer name and domain, and it doesn't match: the library's Chrome Piano has 100K users, and Song Finder belongs to other developers. In our library, the Freedom! developer name only shows Chord Lens, so the "matrix" claim is unverified and most likely a recall mistake.
- The "Facebook musician groups" promotion channel is verified; I found no direct evidence for "r/musicprogramming," "YouTube Shorts," or "domainarrivals." I did find two YouTube Shorts ("ChordLens Is Now on MOBILE" and "Stop Guessing Guitar Chords! Meet ChordLens"), but their view counts are unverified.
2. Product and pricing
- Features (store description + website): shows the current and next chord on the YouTube page with fingering diagrams for five instruments (guitar, bass, ukulele, mandolin, piano), with Nashville numbering; synced lyrics and lead sheet; automatic key and BPM detection with capo and Simplify; pitch change without tempo change and tempo change without pitch change; 6-stem separation (vocals, drums, bass, piano, guitar, other) run locally with WebGPU, with solo/mute and one-click mixes like Karaoke; A-B looping and a metronome that follows the song's beat; full sheet music can go in the sidebar or be printed. Also a web Studio (chordlens.app/studio), a PWA you can add to your phone's home screen, and a Mac app (Apple Silicon only).
- Pricing (chordlens.app, 2026-11-05 capture):
- Free: songs under 7 minutes, 20 new chord analyses per month, stem separation limited to 2-minute clips and 5 times per day, no ads;
- Premium: $3.99/month or $39.90/year;
- Pro: $4.99/month (launch price, then $5.99) or $49.90/year, including 20 cloud stem separations per day;
- heartors.com says Pro has a 14-day free trial with no card required.
- Privacy pitch: only the YouTube video ID is uploaded; key, speed, and stem separation all run locally.
- Revenue isn't public and isn't listed on TrustMRR.
3. Where users came from (growth tactics)
- Posted by the founder in Facebook groups (confirmed, main channel): Jethro Malate posted himself in several FB groups:
- "App Builders PH 🇵🇭" (Filipino dev group), posted "Chord Lens … Now Available for Free" on Sep 19;
- "Guitar Lover" group, posted "Meet the NEW ChordLens Studio" on Oct 3, tagged #WorshipTeam #WorshipGuitarist, aiming at church worship teams;
- The Georgia musicians group, the group with ID 210849032378538, and his personal page (DMBsubham) had the same copy, all with chordlens.heartbeat.me plus the store link. The posts above came from Jina search results; FB post links are at the end.
- Promoted by a Filipino dev KOL (confirmed): the Pinoyfreecoder page posted a "Community project spotlight" on ChordLens on 2026-10-07, with 77 reactions, 12 comments, and 13 shares. One comment reads "parang Moises pero Chrome extension for YT?" (like Moises, but a Chrome extension for YouTube?). On the extops curve, 10/4 295 → 10/16 441, a steady climb.
- Official FB page milestone Reels (confirmed): the Chordlens page posted "2026-10-18 MUSICIANS. ONE BIG MILESTONE" on 1,000, with 1.1K views and 18 shares, then posted "2K STRONG." The timing lines up with the jump from 523 to 1K to 2K users. Whether these posts were paid is unverified: Chordlens doesn't appear in our Meta ad library (metaads), but that library only tracks advertisers on its list, so no record there doesn't mean no spend.
- Facebook "fb-answers" AI Q&A page mentions it (confirmed): Facebook's AI summary pages "YouTube Channel Switcher Tool" and "Music Practice Apps for Pitch" cite Chord Lens, likely because group posts were crawled. The traffic from this is small.
- What drove the 10/19–10/22 spike (unverified): users went from 4 to 523K in 2 days, then fell back to 525 within a week, while the rating count only rose from 16 to 17. Chrome's user count is roughly the number of installs active in the past week, and a shape like "spike then full reversal" suggests this group installed for about a week and then uninstalled or stopped using it. Possible sources include Facebook Reels or posts that were boosted (paid or organic), a big group reshare, or referrals from Freedom!'s internal network (the company is a YouTube MCN with many creators). The current evidence can't tell which.
- Channels not found: nothing on X (x-radar searches for "chordlens" and "\"Chord Lens\"" returned 90 relevant posts over 0 days); no related Reddit posts; no related TikTok videos for "chordlens"; not seen on Product Hunt or HN; no media coverage.
- Ratings: all 20 ratings are 5.0, about 4% of users, far above the typical 0.5–1% for extensions, which fits an early user base of acquaintances and community members. Whether ratings were actively solicited is unverified.
4. Competitors
| Competitors | Where | Launched | Scale | How Chord Lens differs |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Chordify | Web / iOS / Android, plus a Chrome extension called "Transpose by Chordify" | 2013 | Claims 2M monthly actives (older reports); Jamistry cites 9M+ app downloads; the extension has 5,000 users (chromestore library) | You have to jump to Chordify's site or use the app; chords come from its own catalog. Chord Lens draws directly on the YouTube page and includes stem separation. |
| Moises | iOS / Android / Web / Desktop | 2019 | Claims 50M to 75M users; Pro $5.99/month | A big player in stem separation, chords, and pitch shifting, but you have to upload or import audio first. Chord Lens pitches "works on YouTube, runs locally," at a lower price. |
| Ultimate Guitar "Instant Chords: Tab Connect" | Chrome | 2023-10 | 100K users, 3.2 stars (chromestore library) | Matches the song playing on YouTube or Spotify to UG's human-made tabs. Chord Lens uses AI to recognize chords live, so covers and live versions also get charts. |
| A "Find UG tab" button on the YouTube Music web player | Big-company features | 2026 (discussed in FB groups; exact date unverified) | – | Only jumps to a UG chart; no recognition, no stem separation |
| Transpose: pitch ▸ speed ▸ loop | Chrome | 2017 | 1M users | Only does practice tools like pitch shift, tempo change, and looping, with no chord output. Chord Lens includes all of these. |
| Riffloop | Chrome + Web + Android | 2026-06-24 | 876 users, 19 ratings (chromestore library) | Nearly identical idea: a practice workstation under YouTube with local AI stem separation (6 stems), chords, pitch shift, and A-B looping, plus lots of SEO landing pages. Chord Lens focuses more on the chords and lyrics side and covers five instruments. |
| GuitarBear | Chrome | 2026-09-15 | 174 users | Guitar practice only |
| Stem Supply / Stem Split AI / Tonify / Vocal Remover, etc. | Chrome | 2025–2026 | Per 100–5,000 users | Stem separation or vocal removal only, no chords |
| Real-time Chord Recognition for Browser Audio, Chord Finder (microxtnsn) | Chrome | 2025-05 / 2026-04 | 1,000 / 3,000 users | Chord recognition only, no lyrics, stems, or fingering diagrams |
Bottom line: the "chords + stems on YouTube" combo has had at least two full versions on Chrome, Riffloop and Chord Lens, for 2026 years, plus a pile of single-function extensions. The big brands (Chordify, Moises, UG) still don't have an extension that puts chords and stems right on the YouTube page, so there's a gap, but the players filling it are all still small.
5. Why it can be built now (timing)
- Pricing is aimed straight at Moises: Premium $3.99, Pro $4.99 (Moises Pro $5.99), and the launch Pro price is "only $1 more than Premium". That is an anchoring play.
6. Differentiation, and whether that's why it broke out
- Differentiation: (1) it never leaves the YouTube page; (2) one extension covers chords, lyrics, fingering charts for five instruments, Nashville numbers, stem splitting, metronome and printing, a wider feature set than Riffloop, especially lyrics and "print lead sheet", which matters to church worship teams and cover players; (3) privacy plus local computation, with no account needed on the free tier.
- Is that what drove growth? No. The 500 users so far came mainly from the founder posting in groups by hand and goodwill shares in Filipino developer communities. The 2k spike didn't stick, which means the people who arrived didn't become regular practice users. Feature depth hasn't produced organic growth: store search and SEO show no sign of traction yet, while Riffloop is doing much better on SEO.
7. Visibility and copycats
- Visibility: few people know about it. 0 posts on X, nothing on Reddit, HN or PH, no press coverage, no public revenue. It has only spread in Filipino developer Facebook groups and a few musician groups.
- Copycats: none seen. Riffloop, a similar product, launched earlier (June), so it doesn't count as a copycat.
8. What to borrow
- The play: use WebGPU local inference to make the high-compute features' free allowance zero marginal cost, then charge for cloud splitting, longer tracks and export. Price just under the leader (Moises).
- Distribution: Facebook groups (App Builders, Guitar Lover, regional musician groups, worship teams) plus local developer KOL spotlights. That can get a few hundred users during cold start, but the ceiling is clearly low. A milestone Reel ("1,000 musicians") is cheap social proof.
- Lesson: the extension's "users" figure is a weekly-active count, and people pulled in by a short promotion drop off within a week. The use cases that actually retain people (practicing a specific song) need search entry points (SEO pages like "<song> chords", or store keywords) to bring users back again and again. It hasn't built that yet.
9. Still unclear
- Whether the 10/19–10/22 surge of 2k was paid (Facebook ads, Freedom! network referrals, or something else) is unverified.
- The relationship between Jethro Malate and Freedom! (employee, internal incubation, or contractor) is unverified. We only know the product sits under Freedom!'s developer account and the heartbeat.me subdomain, and the terms of service say Freedom! Family Limited operates it.
- Paid conversion and revenue are completely unknown.
- Whether the 20 5-star reviews were solicited is unverified.
