Standout: Instant Job Match & Apply with AI-Tailored Resume & Cover Letters · usestandout.today

# 39 followers, 40k views: an AI auto-apply job plugin grew through a student sock-puppet playbook

**What it is** An AI job search tool. The web app picks jobs, tailors resumes and writes cover letters. The Chrome extension fills and submits applications on company recruiting systems for you, $19–39 a month.

**Why it took off** The person behind it is a co-founder of Mindgrasp. He moved the TikTok student sock-puppet network he built there over to job hunting, timed to 2026 fall recruiting season and job anxiety, with videos saying "I applied to hundreds of jobs and finally landed one," and the domain written right into the caption.

**C** **How you could follow this** Don't build yet another copycat auto-apply extension. Copy the distribution play: find a use case where users are anxious and willing to pay, run a batch of persona accounts telling landing stories, offer a free tier before a subscription, and label ads properly.

Grade C: the category is already crowded (Simplify 500k users, Jobright 300k users, new listings every week) and the features aren't different. It relies on the team's ready-made UGC sock-puppet army, which a follower copying the product can't reproduce. What's worth learning is the playbook, which you can apply to another niche. Still under the radar

1,000 users · rating 5.0 (1)

Standout is a Chrome extension that auto-submits resumes. Functionally it's no different from dozens of rivals in the category, and in four months it went from 185 users to 1,000. It didn't grow because the product is better. The person behind it previously built an AI study tool and ran a method there using student sock-puppet accounts to spread videos on TikTok. This time he moved the same method over to job hunting. Below: how it works, where the money comes from, who it's competing with, and which parts are worth copying.

### A complaint video with 40k views

In 2026 Sep 8, TikTok account @careerwithty posted a video captioned only "they asking for my life history, like no babes" (the application form wants my entire life story, no thanks), tagged #jobsearch #applyingforjobs. The account had 39 followers. The video got 40k views and 5,700 likes (TikTok, 11-06 reading). It was promoting Standout.

The same account's videos before and after look alike: green screen cutouts, a screenshot as background, a line of big text over it, one post every two or three days, a few hundred views each. @not.ashleyk (37 followers) posted the most direct line in Oct 21: "I used 'usestandout.today' to apply to literally hundreds of remote roles & finally secured one." The domain is written right in the caption, so viewers don't even need to search for it.

None of these accounts label the posts as ads. Scrolling back past @not.ashleyk's Oct post, a Jun 1 post promotes a different product: "I use active recall through a website called MindGrasp."

### What it is and how it charges

Standout is mainly a web app: you upload your resume, it picks jobs you qualify for from listings, and it tailors a resume and writes a cover letter for each one. The Chrome extension handles only the last step: on application pages at Greenhouse, Lever, Workday, Ashby, iCIMS and similar enterprise recruiting systems, it fills out and submits the form, with you clicking to confirm before each submission. The extension requests permissions only for these 14 recruiting system domains plus a side panel.

Money isn't collected in the extension. The store listing doesn't declare in-app purchases; payment is on the website usestandout.today (11-06 reading). The first application is free with no card required. Standard is $19/month with 200 applications. Pro is $39/month with unlimited applications. Annual is $149.

The homepage puts the positioning right in the headline: "Stop applying. Start landing." Below it is a row of Stripe, Airbnb, Notion and Anthropic logos, captioned "Where Standout users get hired", plus the line "3.2x Higher recruiter reply rate vs. spray-and-pray" (3.2x the recruiter reply rate of mass applying). None of these logos or numbers can be verified.

### How fast it grew

| Date | Users | Sources |
|---|---|---|
| 2026-06-23 | Launched | Chrome Web Store |
| 09-01 | 185 | Third-party extension stats |
| 09-28 | 615 | Same as above |
| 10-23 | 1,000 | Same as above; updated to 1.8.3 that day |
| 11-07 | 1,000,5.0 stars, only 1 ratings | Chrome Web Store |

It has 1,000 users but only 1 ratings, which suggests people aren't finding it by searching the store. Traffic comes to the website first, and users install the extension for the auto-apply step. Growth picked up in late August, which matches when the sock-puppet accounts started posting in bulk: @crashoutstudent's first video with #usestandout was dated Aug 7, and @careerwithty started posting in Aug 20.

### Where the users come from: a playbook moved over from a study tool

The developer listed in the store is Patrick Matlack, company Standout Technologies, LTD, address in Lakewood, Ohio, a Cleveland suburb. Public records (Crunchbase, RocketReach) show he is a co-founder of the AI study tool Mindgrasp, in charge of growth, based in Cleveland.

Mindgrasp got attention before. In 2025 Nov 20, investigative outlet Indicator published "Thousands of undisclosed ads flood TikTok promoting AI study app," naming Mindgrasp for using "an army of student creators (and actors)" to promote the product, with posts not labeled as paid. Mindgrasp ran a creator-recruiting account @mindgraspcreators and posted a "$1000/month" hiring ad on Reddit's r/UGCcreators.

Standout is running the same playbook with a different set of personas:

- **@crashoutstudent** (1,146 followers): previously posted funny college content. An April exam-complaint video got 5.89M views. From June it switched to "unemployed, job hunting" content. The Sep 18 video is about the "September surge" (fall hiring rush), and the Oct 5 video is titled "My tried and true job hunt method."

- **@careerwithty** (39 followers), **@careerwithmai** (44 followers), **@not.ashleyk** (37 followers): tens of thousands of followers each, posting almost daily, all using the green screen with big text template.

- The official account @usestandouttoday has posted resume tips since August, and posts the same material on Instagram.

Most individual accounts get only a few hundred views, but with enough accounts, one video eventually gets pushed by the algorithm, like @careerwithty's Sep 8 video at 40k views. This is a probability game, and each account is cheap to run. Judging by how the accounts look, this is a network of paid UGC sock puppets (inference, no contracts seen). The target audience also fits: Mindgrasp serves college students, and after graduation the next thing is finding a job.

Two other channels play supporting roles: usestandout.ai has 48 SEO articles such as "LinkedIn Auto Job Applier," plus free tools for resume checking and cover letter generation. Facebook has a page posting "50% OFF UseStandout," which looks like an affiliate account (unverified). No one has mentioned it on X in the past 90 days, and there is no media coverage.

### Who it's competing with

This category is crowded.

| Product | Scale (Chrome users) | Versus Standout |
|---|---|---|
| Simplify Copilot | 500k, 4.8 stars / 3,885 ratings | Category leader; free form-filling, doesn't pick jobs for you or batch-apply |
| Jobright Autofill | 300k, 4.9 points | Nearly the same features plus an app; uses vetted, labeled partner creators |
| Careerflow / Teal / Huntr | 90k to 200k | Focused on job-tracking and LinkedIn optimization |
| LazyApply | 20k, 3.4 points | A typical spray-and-pray bot; Standout's "apply less, apply better" pitch is aimed at players like this |
| FastApply / JobCopilot / Career.io | About 10k each | Fully automatic batch applying, low rating |
| RoboApply | 1,000 | Same scale and playbook, and TikTok also has burner accounts posting "shoutout to RoboApply" |
| new this year, 2026 | dozens to 2,000 | Goodspace, HyperApply, AutoApplyMax... new ones almost every week |

LinkedIn Easy Apply and Indeed one-click apply only work inside their own sites and can't reach external hiring systems. That gap is why these extensions survive. But Simplify and Jobright already occupy it.

### Why now

- **Timing** : the 2026 fall recruiting season, plus AI mass-applying making recruiters harder to filter, made "sent hundreds of applications, no replies" a hugely shared emotion on TikTok. Burner videos keep using the tags "September surge" and "unemployed".

- **Hook** : the videos don't sell a tool, they sell a story: I was anxious too, then I used this and got hired.

- **Conversion** : first use free, no card required, then a monthly subscription. People desperate for jobs will pay, and $19 is far cheaper than a resume writer.

### If it were you

**Verdict** : don't copy this as an AI auto-apply extension. The product is commodity. The leaders Simplify and Jobright have hundreds of thousands of users, and new ones launch every week. Standout's only real asset is distribution. The playbook is worth learning: find a scenario where users are anxious and willing to pay, seed a batch of persona burner accounts, tell the got-hired story, put the domain right in the copy, and convert from free to subscription.

**Who it suits** : people who have run a team of UGC creators and know how to calculate per-video cost and conversion, who apply this playbook to other anxious niches (certification exams, study-abroad applications, visa paperwork), or to job markets beyond English that haven't been hit this way yet (inference: German and Japanese application systems differ, so the extension would have to be rebuilt).

**Who it doesn't suit** : people who can only write code and hope for organic store traffic. Standout has been listed for four months and has only 1 store ratings, which shows the store doesn't deliver volume. Also not for anyone wanting to head-to-head the crowded US English job market.

**How to build it** : the web app is the core, and the extension only handles the step of clicking through the third-party page for the user. The narrower the permissions, the easier it is to pass review. Run one full free application first, then charge $15 to $40 per month.

**How to get users** : one account per persona (fresh grads, career changers, international students), green-screen with big text, one video every two or three days. Seed 10 to 20 accounts for a month and see which hook consistently gets 10k+ views. Disclose properly as "ad" or "partnership": when Indicator reported on Mindgrasp, lawyers pointed out that failing to disclose violates FTC endorsement rules. Jobright runs labeled partnerships and it also took off.

**When to start earlier** : job content follows the hiring calendar. To catch the US spring season, which runs from 1 through March, you need to start warming up accounts by December.

**Signs you've got it wrong** : ① If Standout stalls around 1,000 before January 2027, the burner-account matrix tops out at that scale and the playbook's ceiling is lower than it looks; ② if TikTok or the FTC starts banning or penalizing these undisclosed job-advice accounts, this channel dies; ③ if LinkedIn or Indeed extends one-click apply to external hiring systems, the whole category loses its footing.

- Inferred **Paid ads** : nothing found in the metaads library, though its coverage is limited.

## Standout (usestandout.today): AI job-application auto-apply extension, why it took off

### Bottom line

Standout is an AI job-application auto-apply tool. The web app matches jobs, rewrites resumes and writes cover letters, while the Chrome extension auto-fills and submits forms on ATS pages like Greenhouse, Lever and Workday. It has reached 1,000 users, and not because of product differentiation (Simplify has 500k and Jobright 300k users in the category). It comes from a UGC playbook carried over from Mindgrasp. The developer, Patrick Matlack, is co-founder and growth lead of Mindgrasp, the AI study tool that Indicator exposed in 2025 for hiring many student accounts to post undisclosed soft ads on TikTok and Instagram. Standout copied it: a batch of "job-hunting girl / just graduated" persona accounts post job hacks daily, with captions naming usestandout.today. The absolute numbers are still small, and almost no one outside the niche knows about it.

### Data

- Store (chromestore library, 2026-11-07 detail page): 1,000 users, 5.0 rating but only 1 reviews; listed 2026-06-23, updated to v1.8.3,2026-10-23. Has the "Established publisher" badge. Developer: Patrick Matlack / Standout Technologies, LTD, address in Lakewood, Ohio (a Cleveland suburb), EU trader, has a D-U-N-S number.

- Growth (recall card, extops.dev readings; our extops_series library didn't store this one): 9/1 185 → 9/28 615 → 10/23 1,000, +248 over the last 30 days. It accelerated from late August, matching the timing when the TikTok burner accounts started posting in a cluster (8/7, 8/17, 8/20, 8/24...).

- Only 1 reviews against 1,000 users: traffic mainly comes from the web app and short videos. The extension is just the component you install for the "auto-apply" step, and nobody is asked to leave a review in the store.

- Permissions: 14 ATS domains (Greenhouse, Lever, Ashby, Workable, SmartRecruiters, Workday, iCIMS) + sidePanel + PostHog analytics (permissions field in the chromestore library).

- Pricing (official site usestandout.today, 2026-11-06 reading): first application free, no card required; Standard $19/month for 200 applications, Pro $39/month unlimited, annual $149. No in-app purchases listed in the store.

### Competitors

The store's "related extensions" are the same category: LazyApply, FastApply, Breeze Apply, Jobright, Simplify, and so on. User counts come from the chromestore library.

| Product | Where | Launched | Scale | How Standout differs |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Simplify Copilot | Chrome + web | 2021-02 | 500k users, 4.8 / 3,885 reviews | Category leader; auto-fill is free, AI resume is paid. The user clicks submit themselves, it doesn't pick jobs or bulk-apply for you |
| Jobright Autofill | Chrome + web / app | 2024-12 | 300k users, 4.9 / 413 | Job recommendations + auto-fill + resume rewriting, nearly identical features; already paying legitimate creators (TikTok @emilyekru labeled as partner) |
| Careerflow | Chrome | 2022-11 | 200k, 4.3 / 288 | Leans toward job tracking and LinkedIn optimization, has in-app purchases |
| Teal | Chrome | 2020-08 | 200k | Job tracking + resume, no auto-apply |
| Huntr | Chrome | 2017-04 | 90k | Job tracking + form-filling |
| FrogHire.ai | Chrome | 2023-03 | 40k | Aimed at students abroad and H1B visa holders |
| LazyApply | Chrome | Not verified | 20k, 3.4 points | A classic "mass-apply bot", paid per use or lifetime; Standout's copy is aimed at exactly this "spray-and-pray" type |
| FastApply / JobCopilot / Career.io Auto Apply | Chrome + web | 2021–2025 | About 10k each | Fully automatic auto-apply, low ratings (2.6–4.4) |
| AIApply, Sonara, LoopCV | Web | Around 2023 | Not verified | Fully automatic web-based auto-apply subscription |
| RoboApply | Chrome + web | 2025-09 | 1,000 | Same scale as Standout, also seeding TikTok videos with burner accounts (@jordanbuilds1 posting "shoutout to RoboApply" repeatedly) |
| A batch of 2026 new launches (Goodspace, Lentra, HyperApply, AutoApplyMax, JobEasyApply, Fitly…) | Chrome | 2025-11 to 2026-11 | dozens to 2,000 | Features are largely the same, and new ones launch almost every week |
| LinkedIn Easy Apply, Indeed one-click apply | Big-company features | Years | huge | Only within their own sites, doesn't touch external ATS |

Bottom line: the category is extremely crowded, and Standout has nothing exclusive in terms of features.

### Growth tactics (evidence)

1. **TikTok / Instagram persona burner matrix (confirmed, main channel)** . Searching "usestandout.today" on TikHub turns up a batch of accounts with highly consistent formats:
    - @crashoutstudent (Mae's Talks, 1,146 followers, 245 videos): previously posted comedy content for college students, with a top video at 5.89M views. From 2026-06 it switched to "unemployed / job-hunting" content, one video every two or three days, with #usestandout in the hashtags (2026-08-07,7,699 views). This is the same approach Mindgrasp used to co-opt student accounts.
    - @careerwithty (39 followers, 41 videos): 2026-09-08 one video with 40,371 views / 5,742 likes, caption names Standout.
    - @careerwithmai (44 followers), @not.ashleyk (37 followers, 100 videos; 10-21 "I used 'usestandout.today' to apply to literally hundreds of remote roles").
    - Official account @usestandouttoday (posting resume tips since August).
    - Common traits: a few dozen followers, near-daily posts, green-screen templates with big-text captions, and no ad disclosure. This is a typical paid UGC account network (my judgment; no creator contract seen).
    - The recall card says a single Instagram reel has 400k+ views; Instagram needs login, so I couldn't verify the exact number. But the same "I used usestandout.today…" reel is also searchable on Instagram (instagram.com/reel/DewvzOSBQ89), meaning the same footage is distributed across both platforms.

2. **The founding team brought over an old playbook (confirmed)** . The store developer is Patrick Matlack. Public records (RocketReach, EdTech Chronicle, Crunchbase) show he is co-founder and Chief Growth Officer (CCO / Head of Growth) of Mindgrasp, based in Cleveland, which matches the Lakewood, OH address registered for Standout. Mindgrasp runs an account dedicated to recruiting UGC creators, @mindgraspcreators, and posted a "$1000/month UGC job" on r/UGCcreators. Indicator 2025-11-20 reported that it promotes its study tools with an army of student creators (and actors) without disclosing payment. Standout's target users are exactly the next stage for Mindgrasp's college-student audience: new grads and job seekers.

3. **SEO / free tools (confirmed, volume unknown)** . A separate usestandout.ai site has 48 /resources/ pages in its sitemap (e.g. "LinkedIn Auto Job Applier"), tagged utm_source=tools. The official site footer also links free tools like Resume Checker, AI Cover Letter Generator, and ATS Keyword.

4. **Facebook coupon posts / affiliates (weak evidence)** . A Facebook page posting "50% OFF UseStandout" turned up mixed into a pile of general product-recommendation posts, looking like a commission or coupon-code account. Not verified.

5. **Paid ads** : The Meta Ad Library (our metaads library only tracks a list of advertisers) turned up no usestandout landing-page ads. That doesn't prove they aren't buying ads.

6. **Organic store traffic** : Only 1 ratings, and the extension name is stuffed with keywords (Instant Job Match & Apply with AI-Tailored Resume & Cover Letters). Some store SEO, but not the main driver.

7. X, HN, media: x-radar shows 90 posts in 0 days; no media coverage found.

### Why it's working

- **Timing** : 2026 fall new-grad job-hunting season (small-account videos repeatedly mention a "September surge"), plus AI mass-applying makes recruiters' screening harder. "Unemployment anxiety" content spreads well on TikTok.

- **Distribution** : The team already had a proven UGC-army playbook (Mindgrasp). They reused it for a new category, and within a month or two, growth went from 185 to 1,000.

- **Hook** : The videos don't sell a tool, they sell a story: "I applied to hundreds of remote jobs with usestandout.today and finally landed one." The copy writes the domain outright, so users don't even have to search for it.

- **Conversion** : First application free, no card required, then $19 / $39 subscription. The target users are people desperate for jobs, so willingness to pay is high.

- **Positioning** : The copy runs against "spray-and-pray" tools (like LazyApply) and sells "apply less, apply better," feeling safer than mass-apply bots (LinkedIn bans, recruiter annoyance). This is more a difference in messaging.

### Differentiation

Functionally (match scoring + per-job tailored resume/cover letter + ATS auto-fill + pre-submit confirmation), it largely overlaps with Jobright, Simplify, and JobCopilot, with no technical moat. The real difference is distribution: most in this category do store SEO, Reddit, or legit influencer deals, while Standout runs a network of persona-driven, undisclosed-ad accounts. So what made it work is distribution, not differentiation. The "Less spray. More shine." positioning is there to support the short-video storytelling.

### How visible it is / copycats

- Almost nobody knows about it yet: 0 posts on X, no media coverage, no TrustMRR listing, and the founders haven't posted revenue. Meanwhile, scamadviser and gridinsoft gave the domain low trust scores (23/100, reason unverified), and the big-brand logos (Stripe, Anthropic, etc.) and testimonials on the homepage are hard to verify.

- The founder named on the site, "Greg Davies, founder of Presidium": a Greg Davies did found Presidium (sold to Blackboard in 2010), but I couldn't find any link to this product. The store developer is Patrick Matlack. The name may be a front. Unverified.

- Copycats: hard to say who copied whom. Around the same time, RoboApply was running the exact same TikTok small-account playbook (@jordanbuilds1), and new AI auto-apply extensions hit the store every week.

### What others can borrow

- "Persona small-account network + story hooks + domain written directly into the copy": low-follower accounts can occasionally get 40k to 400k views from the algorithm, cost per account is very low, and dozens of accounts turn it into a probability game.

- Pick a scenario where users are highly anxious and willing to pay (job hunting), then "free first use + monthly subscription."

- The web app does the heavy lifting; the Chrome extension only handles the "execute on third-party pages" step and only needs permission for ATS domains, so review friction is low.

- Risk: undisclosed ads violate FTC endorsement rules and TikTok's branded-content policy (lawyers already flagged this in Indicator's Mindgrasp coverage). One exposé or account ban and the channel dries up.

### Uncertain

- The exact Instagram view count for reels with 400k+ views (requires login, unverified);

- Whether they run paid Meta/TikTok ads (our library doesn't cover it);

- Paying users and revenue (not public);

- Whether the "Greg Davies" name is real, and what the company-level relationship between Standout and Mindgrasp is (Standout Technologies LTD / UseStandout Today LLC);

- Why the domain's trust score is so low.
