# Six platforms, a thousand users: the real-time dubbing extension DubMog, and the thirty-some peers that crowded in after Gemini launched

**What it is** A Chrome extension: open any page with audio and it uses an AI voice to live-translate the video into your language, layered over the original sound. The same account also works on phone, desktop and web.

**Why it took off** It didn't, really: Gemini 3.5 Live Translate turned real-time dubbing into something buildable in two weeks, and DubMog is one of the thirty-some similar products that popped up. Through search articles and a multi-platform rollout, it reached 1,000 Chrome users and 10K+ Android downloads.

**C** **How you could follow it** Don't copy a generic dubbing extension. If you have an audience in a small language or a specific niche, learn from livdub, which lets users bring their own free Gemini key to cut costs to zero, and from DubMog, which uses an on-device model to back its free tier. Do just one language and one scenario.

Grade C: the store already has thirty-some similar products, the leader livdub has 60k users, Google could build this into Chrome at any time, and the underlying capability is available to everyone. What's worth learning is the cost approach of running a free tier on local models and letting users bring their own key. Following the trend itself isn't worth much. Few people know about it yet

DubMog is a Chrome extension: open any tab with audio, click start, and within seconds an AI voice simultaneously interprets the video into your language while the original audio is automatically lowered. Under the hood is Gemini 3.5 Live Translate, released by Google in June. The small Florida company behind it spread the same capability to iPhone, Android, Chrome, Edge, Windows, Mac, the web and ChatGPT, and wrote about twenty search articles, yet by November it had only 1,000 Chrome users. At the same time, livdub, an extension where users enter their own free Gemini key, had 60k. This piece covers why DubMog didn't take off, and what's still open in this space.

### A launch post written three times

In Sep 2026 2, a small company called Octag AI in Lantana, Florida (incorporated 2025, also making face-search, AI phone answering, charades and speaking-practice apps) published a blog post on its site: "DubMog for Chrome: live-dub any tab in your language." The Chrome version had been listed in Aug 30.

This blog post got revised twice. Sep 25 added a line: Edge version is out. Oct 19 added another line: the extension now has a free Standard mode, no login for 30 minutes a day, unlimited time with a free account, and 38 languages. The body still says the Oct 31 test found "Netflix, Hulu, Disney+ and Crunchyroll all get live dubbing in Chrome" — yet the same extension's store listing says "DRM-protected streaming gives the extension silence, these can't be dubbed." The two claims don't match, which suggests the team was changing things while still testing them.

Over two-plus months it kept adding things almost weekly: in October it shipped Windows and Mac clients, file dubbing, and team seats. But the Chrome Web Store numbers on Nov 5 and Nov 7 were both 1,000 users and 2 ratings — not a single one moved.

### What it is and how it charges

Three steps to use it: open a page with audio (YouTube, online courses, livestreams, podcasts), click the icon to pick a language, and press Start. The original audio is turned down, the dub is laid over it, and the translation scrolls in the side panel. It keeps running when you switch to other tabs.

The money works on two layers, which is its most interesting design:

| Tier | Pricing (website, 11-06) | What's behind it |
|---|---|---|
| Standard | Free; in Chrome, 30 minutes a day without login, unlimited with login | Speech recognition and translation run locally in the browser; each language pair takes tens to hundreds of MB to download the first time, so there's no model cost |
| Pro Live | $9.99/month or $79.99/year, billed per "minute" | The official site says audio is processed through Google's Gemini API, 80+ languages, more natural voices |
| Top-up packs | 60 min $1.99,180 min $4.99 | Same as above |
| Business | $19.99/seat/month | Sold to teams and schools |

The free tier runs on local models, which is why it can claim "free, no time limit"; only if you want better-sounding voices do you move to the paid cloud tier. One account's minutes work across phone, computer, and web. Mobile is its biggest pool: Google Play shows 10K+ downloads, with ads and in-app purchases (11-06); the iPhone version launched Jun 24, with 10 ratings and a 4.5 average on the US store. Revenue isn't public.

### Why it showed up right now

In 2026, on Jun 9 Google released Gemini 3.5 Live Translate, in public preview through the Gemini Live API and AI Studio: 70 languages, near-real-time speech-in, speech-out translation.

That turned "real-time dubbing" from a hard problem into a weekend project: capture the tab's audio, send it to Gemini, play back the voice that comes back. DubMog's iPhone version launched on day 15 after the release, and the Chrome version came more than two months later. It isn't the only fast one: Chrome extensions launched in 2026, with "dub" in the name and over 100 users, number 33 in the store, totaling about 136k users (Chrome Web Store, early November).

### Who it's competing with

| Product | Launched | users (Chrome Web Store, early November) | Compared with DubMog |
|---|---|---|---|
| livdub | 2026-07-23 | 60k, 4.56 stars / 81 ratings | Also runs on Gemini, but you get a free key from Google yourself and paste it in; free tier 45 minutes a day; Plus $5/month |
| Tofu Dubbing | 2026-03-01 | 30k, 1,124 ratings | Entered before Gemini 3.5, ratings growing fast |
| AutoDub | 2025-12-23 | 30k (11-04 jumped from 20k to 30k) | YouTube only, dubbing plus subtitles; its site runs an "AutoDub vs livdub" comparison post to catch search traffic |
| DubTab | 2026-01-20 | 10k | Real-time translation with bilingual subtitles, aimed at courses and meetings |
| Video Translator for Udemy / for Coursera | 2025-11 / 2026-01 | 4,000 / 1,000 | One platform per extension, going straight after the online-course use case DubMog pushes |
| Dubingo, DubFlow, EarDub, SubDub, Persian Live Dub, Doblaj, and others | 2026 years | about 1,000 each | Same scale as DubMog, nearly the same positioning |
| YouTube Dubbing – Translate & Dub | 2023-06 | 200k | Veteran; subtitle translation plus read-aloud, not speech-to-speech |
| Immersive Translate | 2022-11 | 3M | Giants of web and subtitle translation; dubbing isn't their core |

There's also free big-company competition overhead: Google Translate and Google Meet already use Gemini 3.5 Live Translate for real-time speech translation, YouTube has given creators automatic dubbing in 27 languages, and AirPods have had live translation since iOS 26. They don't yet cover "any video on any site," but Chrome is Google's own, and that gap could be closed at any time.

### Why livdub got 60k

The two products' core experience comes from the same model, so voice and latency are about the same. The difference lies in two places.

**First, the user's cost is zero.** livdub has you apply for a free Gemini key in AI Studio and paste it into the extension; the model cost is billed to your own key, and the site says "the free quota usually lasts several hours of listening." It spends no model money itself, so it can afford a generous free tier, then sells unlimited time, no ads, subtitles and export on the $5/month Plus plan. DubMog's good voices cost $9.99; its free tier is the local model, which sounds noticeably worse.

**Second, it found a group that really needs it.** In the livdub store page's mid-August reviews, the signatures are Persian names like Mehdi, Mohammad Mahdi, Peyman, Hamid, and Matin; someone wrote "please optimize for slow connections"; and the store's related extensions are "Doblaj — Live Persian Dubbing," "Persian Live Dub," and a few Persian font tools. Its early users are most likely concentrated in Iran (inference) — people who struggle to pay for overseas subscriptions yet watch lots of English content, for whom "bring your own free key, pay nothing" fits exactly.

DubMog picked the audience of "understanding the Udemy courses you already paid for" and Indian languages, stuffing Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, and Bengali into the store description. The scenario is right, but against YouTube's automatic dubbing and a pile of platform-specific extensions, these users have no reason to need it specifically.

### Where its users come from

- **Search articles.** The official site has about 40 pages, of which about 20 blog posts all target long-tail searches: "how to dub Udemy and Coursera courses in real time," "can DubMog be used on Netflix, Crunchyroll, Disney+," "2026 anime and K-drama English dub guide," "free AI dubbing Chrome extension," plus landing pages in 9 languages: Spanish, Portuguese, French, German, Italian, Turkish, Polish, Japanese, and Russian.

- **Store keywords.** The latter half of the extension name, "Real-Time Dubbing & Video Translator," is itself a search term; in the store's "related extensions" it's grouped with AutoDub, DubTab, and DubFlow.

- **Phone to desktop.** The site pushes downloads by device, and some of the 10K+ Play users likely install the extension (inference).

- **TikTok account warming.** The company account @octagai has 1,611 followers and 193k likes, and its bio says DubMog, but recent posts are almost all clips of rap-scene gossip; the only one actually about DubMog is a single Aug 9 post with 14k views.

- **What I didn't find:** 90 days, 0 mentions on X; nothing on Product Hunt or Hacker News. I found no evidence it runs ads, but not finding it doesn't mean it doesn't.

The result is that flat curve: early September it had only a few users, by late October it reached 1,000, and then it stopped moving (9–October numbers come from a third-party extension tracker and are unverified).

### If it were you

**One-line verdict:** Don't copy DubMog. "Capture tab audio and send it to Gemini" can be built by anyone in two weeks, there are already over thirty of these in the store, the leader livdub took the biggest slice at zero cost, and Google itself could make this a free Chrome feature at any time. What's worth learning from DubMog is two design choices, not this business.

**Who it suits:** People who already have a specific audience and know which language they lack — for example, if you're already in a minority-language community (Persian, Vietnamese, Indonesian, Arabic), or have a regular base of users watching foreign-language courses or livestreams.

**Who it doesn't suit:** Anyone who wants to build a general "real-time dubbing for any video" extension and grow slowly through store search and SEO. DubMog walked that path all the way: six platforms, landing pages in nine languages, twenty articles, and it still got 1,000 users.

**How to do it:**

1. Copy livdub's cost structure: have users bring their own free Gemini key, so you pay no model fees and can be generous with the free tier; sell the visible extras — unlimited time, subtitles, export — as paid, priced around $5.

2. Copy DubMog's layering: the free tier falls back on local recognition and translation in the browser, and only the paid tier uses cloud voices. The two can stack: local for those who don't want to apply for a key, bring-your-own-key for those who will.

3. Pick one language and one scenario, and write the name and store description as search terms in that language. Doblaj and Persian Live Dub started this way, though they're still both at only about 1,000.

**How to get users:** Go where that audience already is — Telegram groups in the language, forums, comment sections of YouTube channels — and use a screen recording showing "an English livestream dubbed into your mother tongue in real time"; write the store title and description in the native language.

**How long you have:** Gemini 3.5 Live Translate is still in public preview, so the free quota and pricing can change at any time; until Chrome builds in something similar, there's a window. At the current pace, the time left for new entrants is measured in months, not years (estimate).

**What would mean you got it wrong:** Google tightens the Gemini free quota or builds real-time tab translation into Chrome; or two months after launch, you still can't crack the top three in store search for the language you chose.

### Bottom line

Pricing (official site): Free Standard (on-device voice on mobile + ads; on Chrome, on-device speech recognition with 30 minutes per day without an account and unlimited with an account, 38 languages); Pro $9.99/month or $79.99/year (Pro Live and Pro Cinematic cloud voices, metered by 'energy'; Pro Live burns 2–3× per minute); top-up packs of 60 minutes for $1.99 / 180 minutes for $4.99; Business $19.99/seat/month. The site states that Pro Live 'processes audio through Google's Gemini API.'

### 2. Competitors

**Underlying platform event** : Google 2026-06-09 launched Gemini 3.5 Live Translate, publicly previewed through the Gemini Live API and AI Studio, with near-real-time speech-to-speech translation in 70+ languages (blog.google, Slator, @googledevs). With it, "capture tab audio → send to Gemini → play the translated voice" could be built in weeks, so the extension stores were flooded.

Chrome peers (chromestore library, 2026-11 snapshot):

| Product | Launched | users | How DubMog differs |
|---|---|---|---|
| YouTube Dubbing – Translate & Dub | 2023-06 | 200k, 3.54 points | Established player, mainly YouTube subtitle translation + TTS readout, not real-time speech-to-speech; Chinese developer |
| livdub | 2026-07-23 | 60k, 4.56 stars / 81 ratings | Also captures tab audio and uses Gemini, but has users **enter their own Gemini API key** (free quota from Google), so the cost is near zero; 3.5 months in, 60k users, the leader of this wave |
| Tofu Dubbing | 2026-03-01 | 30k, rated 4.64 / 1,124 reviews (+41 reviews in the past week) | Launched before Gemini 3.5; large review count growing fast, suspected review solicitation |
| AutoDub | 2025-12-23 | 2–30k (11-04 jumped from 20k to 30k) | Focused on YouTube, with on-screen subtitles; the official site publishes an SEO comparison piece (autodub vs livdub) |
| DubTab | 2026-01-20 | 10k | Real-time translation + bilingual subtitles, aimed at courses and meetings |
| Video Translator for Udemy / for Coursera(My little Indie Studio) | 2025-11 / 2026-01 | 4,000 / 1,000 | Split into single products by platform, directly targeting the 'online courses' scenario DubMog pushes |
| Dubingo, DubFlow, EarDub, SubDub, Persian Live Dub, Doblaj, and others | 2026 years | about 1,000 each | Same scale as DubMog, almost identical positioning |
| Immersive Translate | 2022-11 | 3M | Web and subtitle translation giant with video translation, but its core is subtitles, not dubbing |

Big-tech features: Google Translate and Google Meet already use Gemini 3.5 Live Translate for real-time voice translation; YouTube auto-dubbing (creator side, expanded to 27 languages); Apple AirPods live translation (from iOS 26). These are free and built in, capping the ceiling for the 'real-time voice translation' category.

**Bottom line** : competition is crowded, and DubMog is a latecomer in the smallest tier.

### 3. Growth tactics (evidence)

- **Own-site SEO / multilingual landing pages** : the get.dubmog.com sitemap has about 40 pages, of which about 20 are blog posts, all long-tail search queries: 'dub Udemy Coursera courses real time', 'does DubMog work on Netflix Crunchyroll Disney+', 'English dub anime K-drama guide 2026', 'free AI dubbing chrome extension', 'translate dub videos Microsoft Edge', and so on. There are also extension landing pages in es/pt/fr/de/it/tr/pl/ja/ru, plus Spanish and Portuguese articles on 'Udemy course dubbing.' The store description is also stuffed with Indian-language keywords such as Hindi, Tamil and Telugu. Existence confirmed; effect unknown.

- **Store search** : the extension name 'Real-Time Dubbing & Video Translator' is pure keyword; in the store's related extensions it sits alongside AutoDub, DubTab, DubFlow and others (chromestore related table).

- **Cross-platform funnel** : the official site pushes Chrome / App Store / Google Play depending on device; Play's 10K+ downloads are its largest chunk, and some Chrome users may come from mobile users.

- **TikTok** : @octagai (1,611 followers, 193k likes, bio says DubMog). But recent posts are almost all rap-scene gossip clips (Cardi B, Boosie, Diddy); the only DubMog video is a 2026-08-09 clip with 14k views. This is 'seed the account, then plug the product,' and it does little to drive DubMog.

- **YouTube demos** : there are screen-recorded extension demos (e.g., a Portuguese course dubbing demo, version 0.7.15.3); view counts not retrieved.

- **ChatGPT plugin directory** : a plugin exists, so it's one more entry point; traffic unknown.

- **Not found** : 90 mentions in 0 days on X (x-radar); not in the Product Hunt or HN libraries; not in indie/TrustMRR; no match in the Meta ad library (the 'Octagon Studio' hit is a different AR company); not tracked in the Google or TikTok ad lists. Not finding it doesn't mean it isn't advertising.

- **Ratings** : 2 Chrome reviews and 10 iOS US-store reviews; no sign of fake reviews.

### 4. Why it's getting traction (for its size)

1. **Timing** : Gemini 3.5 Live Translate 2026-06-09 launched, and it hit iOS within 15 days and Chrome by late August. It's a fast follow on a platform event.

2. **Free tier kills the cost** : the free Chrome Standard tier uses on-device speech recognition and translation, which costs no model money, so it can afford 'unlimited with an account'; only the paid Pro Live goes through Gemini. That lets it hold its own against free competitors (livdub asks users for their own key).

3. **Specific scenarios** : it targets 'understanding Udemy/Coursera courses you've already paid for' and Indian languages, plus tests on Netflix/Crunchyroll (10-31), all written as blog posts people can find in search.

4. **Full-platform rollout** : iOS, Android, Chrome, Edge, Windows, Mac, web and the ChatGPT plugin share one account and balance, with Business seats for teams. This is its biggest difference from the pile of single-extension products.

But with 1,000 users and no obvious daily growth on Chrome (11-05 to 11-07 still 1,000), none of the above has turned into real growth yet.

### 5. Differentiation

- Most peers are 'one Chrome extension + one key.' DubMog is a 'multi-platform subscription product + unified energy-based billing + B2B seats.' There are also iPhone 'system dubbing' tools (dubbing the audio of other apps) and tools that 'dub a file and export it.'

- But the core capability (Gemini Live Translate) is available to anyone, and the voice quality and latency are the same as livdub's. Multi-platform support is the dev team's capacity advantage, not a difference users can see at a glance. In the data, **the differentiation has not led to a lead** : livdub only does an extension and lets users bring their own key, yet it has 60k users after 3 months.

- So this differentiation isn't why it took off. It hasn't taken off yet.

### 6. How visible it is

Not many people know about it yet: 0 mentions on X, none on PH/HN, revenue not public. The only external pages we can find are the stores, AppBrain, and APKPure.

### 7. Takeaways

- When a model platform ships a new capability (here, Gemini 3.5 Live Translate), launching within two weeks and spreading across platforms at once is a workable play for a small team. But be clear that others can also launch within two weeks.

- A cost structure where the free tier uses local/on-device models and only the paid tier uses cloud models is worth copying, and it can support 'free with no time limit' as a marketing message.

- Write long-tail SEO articles and multilingual landing pages by scenario (online courses, anime, streaming) and by language (Hindi, Portuguese, Spanish).

- Lesson from the other side: on Chrome, livdub's 'use your own free Gemini key' drops user cost to zero, and that brings in more users than a polished subscription system would.

### 8. Uncertain

- 9–October Chrome growth curve comes from extops data recalled at the time; our database doesn't cover it, unverified.

- Edge, Windows and Mac user numbers and paying users are unknown; how many of the Play 10K+ are active or paying is unknown.

- Whether it runs Meta / Google ads: our ad libraries don't track it, unverified.

- Legal risk: it dubs content like Netflix in real time, and its website says 'only for content you have the right to use.' Whether stores or rights holders will restrict it long term is unknown.
