Someone else's product took #1 on Product Hunt, and five days later he created a repo named "Open + its name": how OpenChatCut got 2,900 stars
What it is An open-source AI video editing desktop app with a multi-track timeline and a built-in agent. External tools like Claude Code and Codex can also edit the project directly via MCP. It calls itself "the open-source ChatCut."
Why it took off The commercial product ChatCut took #1 on the Product Hunt daily chart in Jul 10. Five days later, this author created the repo, putting "open-source ChatCut" in the name and the first line of the README. The first wave came from Chinese AI-community posts, Product Hunt, and linux.do. After that, the search term and skill directories kept it growing by 20 stars a day.
BHow you could copy it Stop building yet another AI editor and copy the playbook instead: watch closed-source subscription products that just hit #1 on Product Hunt, ship an "Open + original name" open-source version within a week, use that phrase in the README and blog posts, package it as a one-line installable skill, and launch it through Chinese AI-community accounts in the same week.
- Data (updated daily) · Repo created 2026-07-15 · 2,974 stars · 7 days +156
GitHub · stars Data 2026-08-02 → 2026-11-08 (99 days, 18 observations). Points before 10-28 come from deeply / archive backfill, not every day has one
OpenChatCut is an open-source AI video editing desktop app that lets Claude Code, Codex, and its built-in agent cut footage directly on a real multi-track timeline. It got 2,950 stars in four months. Its features aren't standout for its category, and a project that built nearly the same thing in the same period got only a third of its stars. The extra stars came from the name and the timing: a commercial product had just gone viral, and it was the first to say "I'm the open-source version of it." The playbook is copyable, but the AI editing topic is already packed.
"A few days ago ChatCut became the new god"
On Jul 2026 10, ChatCut, a commercial AI editing tool, relaunched on Product Hunt and took #1 for the day and #4 for the week (427 points). It is backed by a tens-of-millions-of-RMB seed round led by Zhenge Capital, and the Chinese AI community called it the "new god" that week.
In the early hours of Jul 15, Chinese developer 0xsline created a GitHub repo named OpenChatCut. The first line of the README reads:
Open-source ChatCut alternative · agent-native · local-first AI video editor
The first release, v0.1.0, shipped in Jul 20. The same day, the Chinese X account @cellinlab posted "OpenChatCut is here!" with copy nearly identical to the Chinese README (inferred to be supplied by the author, not verified). Another Chinese blogger, @zhongying14, wrote: "A few days ago chatcut became the new god, but its operations can't be seen clearly on the front end. This open-source project solves that!" On Jul 21 it launched on Product Hunt, ranking #13 on the daily chart with 139 points and 65 comments. The project website published two blog posts the same day, titled "An Open-Source ChatCut Alternative" and "ChatCut vs OpenChatCut."
From ChatCut taking #1 to OpenChatCut putting up its "open-source version" banner took 11 days. On linux.do, the author was asked how long development took, and answered "about two weeks."
What it is
An Electron desktop app, open-sourced under AGPL. On opening, it looks like a normal editor: an asset panel, a preview, a multi-track timeline, plus a chat box on the side. Say "cut this 4-hour activity recording into lectures," and the agent identifies the content and splits it, writing the result into real tracks and clips. You can then keep editing manually, undo, and save versions. It also exposes an MCP interface, so external Claude Code and Codex can use the same tools to edit the project. Changes go into a draft first and only take effect after a human approves. Exports include MP4, subtitles, and FCPXML.
There is also a closed-source Pro version, which is a different piece of software: Tauri + Rust rendering, local speech recognition (FunASR, Whisper), screen and camera recording, and export to CapCut drafts. Pro v3.0.1 was just released in Nov 6.
Where the stars came from
Plotting the daily star count (data as of 11-06) gives a line with no spikes:
| Period | Stars | Average per day |
|---|---|---|
| 07-15 → 08-02 | 0 → 755 | About 40 |
| 08-02 → 10-09 | 755 → 2,202 | About 21 |
| 10-28 → 11-06 | 2,738 → 2,930 | About 21 |
The biggest single-day gain was +30 (11-04), and it never made GitHub trending. Broken down, it came from these channels:
First wave: the name plus Chinese AI circles. In the first 18 days, the 755 stars came mainly from the Chinese posts above, Product Hunt, and the "open-source self-promotion" post on linux.do on Jul 30 (850 views, 79 likes). The replies under that post are telling: "I happened to be generating videos for work recently", "Can I really have AI cut my product videos now? I'm crying", "After generating images and then making videos with AI, I found editing became the biggest problem." The v0.1.3 release the day after the PH launch was downloaded 18k times (GitHub release stats, which may include auto-update repeat downloads).
The long tail afterward: one search term plus a pile of directories. The author packaged it as a one-line installable agent skill, npx skills add 0xsline/OpenChatCut, and a batch of skill and MCP directories listed it automatically. Add people searching "chatcut alternative", and it gained a steady 20 stars a day from August through November. That is inferred to be the main source, though it can't be verified one by one. A big English account, @aigleeson, reposted it in Sep 1, but that tweet got only 1,929 views, and nothing appeared on Hacker News.
Keeping people: fast releases. 1,132 commits, 891 of them by the author himself. 3 months brought 28 releases, several in one day in mid-August. A dozen or so outside contributors sent in a Thai language pack, Docker support, and new model integrations.
Why this one and not the others
The clearest evidence is two nearly identical projects that came out earlier:
| Project | Launched | Stars (11-06) | How it differs |
|---|---|---|---|
| OpenChatCut | 07-15 | 2,950 | Called "open-source ChatCut" |
| MartinDelophy/ai-video-editor | 07-09 | 946 | Local, timeline + agent, almost the same positioning, but without the ChatCut name |
| FableCut | 07-06 (07-09 on HN) | 780 | Browser editor + MCP, also launched the same week as ChatCut; only 16 points on PH |
Its selling points, a real editable timeline, agent access via MCP, and local keys, are shared by both. The only thing the name adds is this: someone who wants ChatCut without a subscription or cloud uploads who searches "ChatCut open source" sees it first.
The author isn't a video person either. Three other repos under his account with over a thousand stars each (a short-drama script skill at 1.56k, awesome-deepseek-harness at 1.3k, StoryGen-Atelier at 1k) were all built to chase hot topics of the time. This is someone who batch-chases trends, and OpenChatCut is the most successful instance of that playbook.
Who's competing for this spot
AI agent editing was very crowded in 2026, and most of the competitors have more stars:
| Project | Launched | Scale (11-06) | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| OpenCut | 2025-06 | 97K stars | "Open-source CapCut," mainly manual editing |
| video-use(browser-use) | 2026-04 | 31K stars | Chat-only output, no timeline |
| video-shotcraft | 2026-07-19 | 17K stars | Remotion skill, no editor UI, launched the same week as it |
| palmier-pro | 2026-04 | 15K stars | macOS only |
| Concat | 2026-08-25 | 14k stars, +1,760 in the last 7 days | Open-source CapCut alternative + MCP, launched over a month later, and has already passed it |
| openfilm | 2026-10-04 | 4,900 stars, +1,307 in the last 7 days | Open-source AI video agent + editor, passed it within a month |
The phrase "open-source ChatCut" has also been taken by others: the commercial product Pireel wrote a post titled "ChatCut Open-Source Alternative." ChatCut itself launched a desktop version in Aug 26 and then added over 100 skills in October, so the "local, desktop" differentiator is also being absorbed by the original. CapCut and Xiaohongshu are each building agent editing as well.
If it were you
The takeaway: Copy the playbook, not the topic. "A commercial product just went viral, so ship an open-source version within a week and put its name in the repo name" needs no celebrity and no big company, and any fast developer can use it. The author has used it several times. But "open-source AI editing" is already filled with a dozen-plus projects, and later entrants like openfilm and Concat are growing faster than this one. Building another one now will barely get any stars.
Who it's for: People who check the Product Hunt daily chart and the Chinese AI community every day, and who can build a working desktop or web app in two weeks. People already using Claude Code or Codex to write code, who know how to package things as skills and MCP servers.
Who it's not for: People who want to build yet another AI editor. People who move slowly and need one to two months for a first version, since this play's window is only one to two weeks. People who want to win on features and won't put effort into naming and launch timing.
How to do it:
- Watch the top three on the Product Hunt daily chart and the trending terms in Chinese AI circles, and pick new products that are "closed-source, cloud-based, subscription-priced, where developers will want a local version." ChatCut is exactly this type: the original is paid and cloud-based, and developers naturally want something they can run themselves.
- Ship an installable first version within a week. Name the repo "Open + original name," write "Open-source ××× alternative" as the first README line, and add a sentence saying "not affiliated with the original product" to avoid trouble.
- In the same week, use the same phrase in two blog posts, "Open-source ××× alternative" and "××× vs your project," to catch the search traffic.
- Package it as one line with
npx skills add, turn on MCP, and get picked up automatically by skill and MCP directories. That's where the steady trickle of stars over the coming months comes from. - Release often in the first month and reply to every issue the same day, so the first wave of people doesn't walk away.
How it got users: the launch week, they pitched Chinese AI-circle X accounts (accounts like @cellinlab) for first-post shares and wrote the copy for them. The same week they went up on Product Hunt, then posted a self-nomination on linux.do following the open-source promo rules and answered every reply. English repost accounts brought little, so don't count on them.
When to be early: within 7 to 10 days of the original product taking #1. OpenChatCut was still in time when it created the repo 5 days later and launched on PH 11 days after that. Later than that and someone else claims the name.
Signs you misread it: if your "open-source ×××" project has fewer than 300 stars two weeks in, the original's heat only reached a small circle, or someone already owns the term. Conversely, if feature-only lookalikes with no name hook (like openfilm) grow fast, the real driver is the demand for the topic itself, so put your effort into features and demo videos, not the name.

Why OpenChatCut (0xsline/OpenChatCut) worked
Channel: GitHub; research date 2026-11-06. Data from our github / producthunt / hackernews libraries, live GitHub API checks, and web search (Jina / Exa).
One line
It's the open-source version of ChatCut: an AGPL, local-first Electron desktop editor with a built-in agent, multi-track timeline, and an MCP interface so Claude Code / Codex can edit the project directly. ChatCut relaunched on 2026-07-10 and took Product Hunt daily #1; five days later (07-15) the author created this repo, named "Open + ChatCut" with the README's first line reading "Open-source ChatCut alternative." It works by riding the name of a freshly hot commercial product and claiming the "open-source ChatCut" spot first, plus distribution through the Chinese AI community and frequent releases. Its star count is mid-pack among its peers (2.9k), an order of magnitude below the peers that really took off (14k to 97k).
1. Basic data
- Created 2026-07-15; by 2026-11-06 it had 2,930 stars and 438 forks (data card). Live GitHub API check: 2,949 stars, 440 forks.
- Star curve (data card, daily): 07-15 → 08-02 rising to 755 (18 days, about 40 a day on average); 08-02 → 10-09 rising to 2,202 (about 21 a day on average); 10-13 → 10-28 about 29 a day on average; 10-28 → 11-06 about 21 a day on average. The single-day maximum in the observed window was +30 (11-04). No burst peak, just steady growth. It never made trending, either site-wide or by language (trending_days_any=0), possibly because GitHub doesn't list repos younger than about 60 days.
- Fork rate 15%, about the same as similar open-source editing libraries: OpenReel 14.9%, claude-code-video-toolkit 17.1%, Cutia 16.7% (github library). This is not an anomaly and shouldn't be read as evidence that many people are building on it.
- Very active development: 1,132 commits, 891 from the author himself plus a dozen or so external contributors. It went from v07-20 to v0.2.17 across 0.1.0,10-15, with 28 releases in total; in mid-August several versions shipped in a single day. Release assets have around 100k downloads combined (GitHub API; this may include repeated downloads from auto-update manifests, so treat it as an order of magnitude). v0.1.3 (07-22, the day after the PH launch) alone had 18k downloads.
- The author, 0xsline (sline), is a Chinese developer with 113 GitHub followers. His other high-star repos also chase trends: short-drama (a short-drama script skill, 1.56k), awesome-deepseek-harness (1.3k), StoryGen-Atelier (1k). He's a creator who batch-produces AI open-source projects around trends, not a veteran in video.
2. Competitors (doing the same thing: AI-agent-driven editing that keeps a real, editable timeline)
This space has been very crowded for 2026 years, and most peers have far more stars than it does.
| Name | Form | Launched | Scale | How it differs from OpenChatCut |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| ChatCut(chatcut.io) | Commercial web / desktop / ChatGPT and Claude Code plugins | Since 2025; relaunched 2026-07-10 | PH daily #2026-07-10 and weekly #4 on 1 (427 points); launched the Desktop version on 08-26, daily #4; raised a tens-of-millions-of-RMB seed round led by Zhenfund on 2025-10 | It's the original being copied: closed-source, cloud, subscription. OpenChatCut's pitch is open-source, local, and BYO key. |
| OpenCut | Open-source, browser | 2025-06 | 97.4k star | Positioned as "open-source CapCut", mostly manual editing, MCP still planned |
| Concat(jub0t) | Open-source, local | 2026-08-25 | 14.4k stars, +1,760 over the last 7 days | Open-source CapCut alternative using JSON-RPC / MCP; its usage and heat have already passed the original |
| palmier-pro | Open-source macOS editor | 2026-04 | 14.7k star | "A macOS editor built for AI", Mac only |
| video-shotcraft | Claude Code / Codex skill(Remotion) | 2026-07-19 | 17.2k star | Just a skill with no editor UI, though it can export CapCut drafts; launched at the same time, with 6× OpenChatCut's stars |
| video-use(browser-use) | Claude Code skill | 2026-04 | 30.6k star | No timeline UI, finished video purely from chat |
| OpenMontage / hyperframes(HeyGen) | Agent video production pipeline | 2026-03 | 77k / 79k stars | Leans toward generation and programmatic video rather than an NLE editor |
| openfilm | Open-source AI video agent + editor | 2026-10-04 | 4.9k stars, +1,307 over the last 7 days | Launched 3 months later, passed it on stars within a month. It's the direct next-generation rival. |
| ffmpeg-skill(kajisho5) | MCP + FFmpeg toolset | 2026-09-03 | 4.6k star | No UI |
| MartinDelophy/ai-video-editor | Open-source, local, timeline + agent | 2026-07-09 | 946 star | Nearly the same positioning and 6 days earlier, but without the ChatCut name, so it has one-third the stars |
| FableCut | Open-source browser NLE + MCP | 2026-07-06(Show HN 07-09) | 780 stars; PH 07-13 with only 16 points | Zero dependencies, lightweight, also rode ChatCut's launch week, but never used the word "ChatCut" |
| Cutia(msgbyte) | Open-source browser CapCut alternative | 2026-02 | 891 star | Mostly manual editing |
| Pireel | Commercial | 2026 | Not verified | Also published "ChatCut Open-Source Alternative" SEO articles to siphon traffic |
| CapCut Skills / Xiaohongshu OpenStoryline | Big-company features | 2026 | Not verified | Big companies each built their own Agent editing; OpenChatCut Pro connects to CapCut via "export CapCut draft" |
Conclusion: this idea is not short on competitors, from open source to big companies, someone is building it. OpenChatCut's win isn't features, it's the name and timing: MartinDelophy/ai-video-editor and FableCut, which built nearly the same product in early July, only got 1/3 and 1/4 stars.
3. Where users came from (growth tactics)
- Riding the name + timing (confirmed): ChatCut 07-10 hit #1 on the PH daily chart, and Chinese AI circles dubbed it the "new god." 07-15 built a repo, 07-20 shipped v0.1.0. Chinese KOL 麻酱AI实验室 (@zhongying14) 07-20 wrote in a post: "ChatCut blew up the other day, but its workflow isn't visible on the front end. This open-source project solves that!" (x.com/zhongying14/status/2079268640239534443,362, views). Site SEO is also betting on the keyword: 07-21 published two blog posts at once, "An Open-Source ChatCut Alternative" and "ChatCut vs OpenChatCut."
- Chinese AI-circle X account launch (confirmed): @cellinlab (Cell 细胞) 07-20 posted "OpenChatCut is here!" (x.com/cellinlab/status/2079092258603778439), with copy identical to the Chinese README, likely supplied by the author or posted by a paid promoter; Chinese KOLs reposted it. 07-31 @bozhou_ai wrote a ChatCut / Pireel / OpenChatCut comparison, giving it 77/100, with the verdict "strongest in openness and extensibility."
- Product Hunt (confirmed): 2026-07-21 launched, featured, #13 on the daily chart and #60 on the weekly chart, with 139 points and 65 comments on launch day (producthunt database). The v0.1.3 released the next day got 18k downloads, and from 07-15 to 08-02 it gained 755 stars; the first wave of traffic mostly came from here and X.
- linux.do self-promo post (confirmed, small volume): 07-30 posted an "[Open-source self-promo]" thread with 850 views, 79 likes, and 22 replies (linux.do/t/topic/2676691.json). The README displays a LINUX DO endorsement badge and an AtomGit G-Star badge. A reply in the thread said "the author seems to have already made money by forking it."
- Long tail from Skill / MCP directories (inclusion confirmed; traffic not verified): The author published the skill as
npx skills add 0xsline/OpenChatCut, which was auto-listed by a batch of directories including skillsllm, skills-hub.ai, typingmind, qai.io, 6erskills, mcpapp-store, aitoolradar, and AUR. Add the search term "chatcut alternative," and these are likely the source of the steady 20-to-30 stars per day from 08 through November: no spike, never hit trending, yet the curve never dropped. - English big-account reposts (confirmed, small volume): @aigleeson 09-01 posted "Someone just turned Claude Code into a powerful video editor for free… It is called OpenChatCut" for 1,929 views; there were also a YouTube tutorial, an Instagram reel, a LinkedIn review, and a hlido.eu review (77/100).
- Community and sponsors (confirmed): There's a Discord and a WeChat group QR code; sponsor OfoxAI (an aggregated API platform, with a utm link); Ko-fi / 爱发电 tipping.
- HN: none (the hackernews database has no stories for OpenChatCut / 0xsline).
4. Retention and monetization
- Open-source version draws users, closed-source Pro makes money: openchatcut.com/pricing states the two editions are separate software. The open-source version is Electron + Remotion under AGPL; Pro is Tauri 2 + Rust GPU compositing + local models (FunASR / Whisper, matting and denoising), and adds recording, bidirectional MCP, signed installers, and CapCut draft export. Pro v3.0.1 was just released in 2026-11-06, with a 7-day trial on first launch; the site says "Pro pricing will be announced later," and licenses are bought by email.
- Revenue not public: not on TrustMRR, and the author has never shared revenue. "Already profitable from a fork" is just a linux.do user's claim, unverified.
- Evidence it's sticking: 236 issues / PRs, with steady outside contributions (Thai language pack, Docker, new model providers); very high release frequency.
5. What's the differentiation, and is it why it broke out?
- Product differentiators: (a) the timeline is a real, editable NLE project, not a video generated once that can't be changed; (b) the built-in Agent and external Claude Code / Codex use the same editing tools via MCP, with changes going through proposal / draft sessions that a human approves; (c) local-first, bring-your-own key, and ChatGPT subscriptions can be used through the Codex CLI; (d) it exports FCPXML, and Pro can also export CapCut drafts.
- Most of these points also exist among peers: Concat, FableCut, MartinDelophy/ai-video-editor, and palmier are all "real timelines that AI can drive." What only it has is the name and positioning: "the open-source ChatCut". In the week the commercial product was hot, it gave developers and Chinese creators who wanted ChatCut without a subscription or cloud a ready search term and an easy-to-repeat pitch.
- So differentiation itself wasn't the main driver; the name and timing were. Broad features and fast releases are what kept the long tail after the name-riding.
6. Copycats
- The "open-source ChatCut" niche has already been followed: Pireel wrote a "ChatCut Open-Source Alternative" article to capture the same term; openfilm (10-04) and Concat (08-25) are a newer generation of open-source Agent editors, and their stars are growing faster.
- ChatCut has its own 08-26 Desktop version, and with 10-22 in the 100+ skill, it's also eating into the "local desktop" advantage.
7. What others can borrow
- "Open + hot new product name" quick land-grab: in the week a commercial AI product takes #1 on PH, ship an open-source alternative and put the rival's brand word in the repo name, the first README line, and the SEO blog at once.
- Open-source version for growth + closed-source Pro for revenue: the AGPL open-source version captures stars and search traffic; Pro uses a faster stack (Tauri / Rust / local models), sells licenses after a 7-day trial plus email, and sidesteps the problem of others taking the open-source version for commercial use.
- Package the product as an Agent Skill (
npx skills add) so skill / MCP directories auto-list it, trading peak traffic for a steady, unbroken long tail. - Launch via the Chinese AI-circle X accounts + linux.do + PH to get the first wave of stars, then keep people with frequent releases.
8. Still unclear
- Pro pricing, number of paying users, and revenue are all undisclosed; "already profitable from a fork" is unverified.
- Whether @cellinlab's tweet was author-supplied or paid promotion is unverified (the copy matches the README).
- There's no day-by-day data from 08 to October (the data has gaps between 08-02 and 10-09), so it's unknown whether there were small spikes in that stretch.
- How many of the 100k release downloads were real installs is unknown.
- After ChatCut Desktop and big companies (CapCut, Xiaohongshu OpenStoryline) entered, it's uncertain whether the open-source version's long tail can hold.
