# "The problem isn't the software, it's my hands": one person spent three weeks moving the whole of Maya into Blender and earned 530 stars

**What it is** A free, open-source Blender extension that makes Blender look and feel like Maya, with one-click switching back to stock Blender.

**Why it took off** People moving from paid Maya to free Blender have long been held back by operating habits. Earlier plugins moved only one piece at a time; this is the first to move the whole thing. Japanese CG sites and a Disney engineer shared it first, and on October 27–29 three Blender plugin review YouTube channels covered it in a row, and the stars surged over those three days.

**B** **How you could follow this** Pick a "pricey software → free open-source alternative" pair (such as C4D / Houdini → Blender, or After Effects → DaVinci Resolve). Use your years of hands-on feel plus AI coding to move the whole set of operating habits over, make it unchanged by default and one-click reversible, then go find YouTubers who review plugins for that ecosystem.

Grade B: the playbook is clear and repeatable, AI coding makes it doable for one person, and the niche isn't crowded yet. But the star ceiling is only a few hundred to one or two thousand, you need genuine hands-on software feel, and you have to hope a review channel picks you up. The first follower, blender-max, had only 20 stars after two weeks. Spreading in small circles

A Seoul-based 3D artist whose GitHub account was only registered this January, with this single repo, released a free Blender extension on October 20 that moved Maya's Hotbox, Channel Box, Shelf and shortcuts over, along with concepts like "freeze transforms" and "delete history." In 17 days it got 530 stars. What's worth studying here isn't Maya, it's the playbook: pick a piece of software that people want to leave but are locked into by muscle memory, move its entire set of operating habits into an open-source alternative, do it completely, and make it one-click reversible.

### A Bluesky post

On the evening of October 23, Yining Karl Li, a rendering engineer at Disney Animation, posted on Bluesky: "Someone made a Blender add-on that makes Blender look and feel exactly like Maya. Holy crap, it really is exactly like Maya. Amazing for someone with 15+ years of Maya muscle memory."

The same day, the Japanese CG news site 3dnchu published "BlenderをMaya化!", and ModelingTechNote followed up that day. The plugin ships with Japanese and Simplified Chinese interfaces, so the Japanese sites shared it without any barrier.

The author, oh hyeon seok (on GitHub as 5hyuns), gave a single paragraph of reasoning in the README: "I spent many years in Maya. When I actually tried Blender, the problem wasn't the software, it was my hands. Holding space brought up nothing, I couldn't find the Channel Box, and every few minutes my hand reached for a Shelf that wasn't there."

### What it actually does

Maya's annual subscription is about $2,010, while Blender is free. People have always wanted to switch; what holds them back is operating habits. Others have tried this before, but each only moved one piece:

| Existing solution | What it moved | Scale |
|---|---|---|
| Blender's built-in "Industry Compatible" keymap (since 2019) | A generic industry keymap, not specific to Maya | Every Blender user has it |
| Maya Config (FormAffinity, over 7 years) | Keyboard shortcuts, pie menus, side Shelf; the author said it was "not a full emulation"; later turned into paid Lite / Pro versions | 734 ratings on Gumroad's free version |
| EMC Tools, blender-maya-hotkeys, Maya-Pivot, etc. | each takes one piece: pie menus, hotkeys, pivot | the open-source ones all stay under 10 stars |

Its homepage opens with a direct jab at them: "Other tools only port one piece: a pivot tool, a hotkey set, a Shelf. This one remakes the whole thing at once." It covers the Hotbox, marking menus, Channel Box, Attribute Editor, menu sets, option windows, Alt+mouse navigation, centimeter units, `pCube1`-style naming, plus rigging, skin weights, and the Graph Editor. The menus follow Maya 2026 layout, and features it can't do are listed, greyed out, with the reason stated.

Two design choices make it easy to trust: installing it changes nothing until you switch to Maya mode yourself, and a "Maya | Blender" toggle in the UI flips back to native Blender hotkeys in one click, for when a tutorial assumes stock shortcuts. It's free and GPL-licensed, and the README says plainly: "No paid version, don't donate, no commercial goal."

### How one person shipped it in three weeks

932 commits in three weeks, 882 of them by the author; 14 releases, from v10-20 on 0.2.0 to v11-06 on 0.12.0, each with a long changelog that includes lines like "steps 192–228" and "audits 14–16". The contributors list also includes a `claude` account. Most likely AI-assisted. (inference)

This is the point that matters most for anyone wanting to follow: a "full clone" used to be work only a team would take on, which is why for the past 7 years people only ported one piece. Now one knowledgeable person with AI coding can get to a "95% similar" version in three weeks. That's the wording from the Gamefromscratch video: "like 95%+ of Maya".

### Where the stars came from

The daily star counts line up very neatly:

| Date | Stars | What happened |
|---|---|---|
| 10-23 | — | Bluesky posts, 3dnchu, ModelingTechNote coverage |
| 10-24 | 54 | |
| 10-27 | 87 | askNK video "Finally, Maya Power in Blender!", 129k views |
| 10-28 | 158(+71) | Gamefromscratch "Maya ➡️ Blender -- This Is MINDBLOWING!!!", 57k views |
| 10-29 | 276 (+118, single-day high) | InspirationTuts "New Maya Alternative Has Been Released!", 88k views |
| 10-31 | 417 | |
| 11-06 | 530 | daily gains fell back to 5 |

(stars: GitHub daily records; views: YouTube, 11-06)

Three YouTube videos totaled roughly 270k views, which brought in about 450 stars and several thousand downloads (attachments still live on GitHub Releases have 3,500 downloads, 11-06). After that came the long tail: BlenderArtists, the Daz3D forums, Reddit r/blender threads, and reposts on Turkish, Chinese, and Korean sites. No promotional post from the author themselves turned up.

Video descriptions on channels like askNK link to promo pages for Superhive and BlendKit. These channels make their living on add-on content and have long lacked "free killer tool" topics. A free, reversible add-on whose effect is obvious at a glance (open it and you're looking at the Maya interface) is exactly the video they want.

### Weak points

- **The hype has already passed** : daily gains dropped from 118 to 5, and there has been no new amplifier since the three big videos.

- **The official store didn't work out** : it had a listing on the Blender official extensions platform, where v0.5.0 got 576 downloads, but its status reads "Declined", and later versions are "Awaiting Review". Main distribution is GitHub only. The reason is not public.

- **The author says it's "still rough in places"** , with 9 open issues; real retention and word of mouth are not visible from outside.

- **530 stars is the size of this niche** : 3D software migration is a vertical circle. Outside the CG crowd nobody shares it, and on X it barely came up in 30 days.

### Others are already following

In Oct 23, the day 3dnchu covered it, neom315 created blender-max: the same idea for 3ds Max users, with a Max-style UI, Command Panel, and four-way menus, and the description uses very similar phrasing. Two weeks later, it has 20 stars.

The comparison makes the point: the approach can be copied, but copying doesn't guarantee stars. Maya is the biggest migration source in the 3D world, with a Disney engineer speaking for it and three big-channel videos. Max users have far less presence in the Blender community, and blender-max has yet to get its video.

### If it were you

**Verdict** : "port the entire operating habits of software A into the open-source alternative B" is a clear, repeatable, not-yet-crowded open-source topic, and AI coding lets one person afford it. But the star ceiling sits at a few hundred to a thousand or two, and it depends on whether vertical-niche YouTube review channels pick it up.

**Who it suits** : people who have spent years in software A and have muscle memory for it. These projects depend on knowing what "holding space should pop up" rather than on coding skill. AI can fill in the code, but it can't supply that feel.

**Who it doesn't suit** : people who want tens of thousands of stars and mainstream reach, or who never used software A and only want to screenshot menus and copy them.

**How to do it:**

- Judge a topic on three things: A is expensive or falling behind, B is free and rising, and lots of people want to switch between them but find it hard. Ready candidates: Cinema 4D / Houdini → Blender, After Effects / Premiere → DaVinci Resolve, Photoshop → Krita (GIMP has already been tried). 3ds Max → Blender is taken, but with only 20 stars, a more complete version still has room.

- Start with the "whole thing" right away, not just hotkeys. "Others port a piece, I port the whole" is this project's headline.

- Change nothing by default and offer one-click switching back to native, so the worry "will installing mess things up?" is gone first.

- The interface ships in Japanese and Chinese. Japanese CG news sites are sensitive to tools like this, and that's where it got its start.

- Frequent releases, long changelogs, and public thanks to testers keep the conversation going, and outside contributors will come in.

**How to get stars** : first get it in front of knowledgeable people on the B software's forums and Bluesky, then email YouTube channels that review add-ons in the B ecosystem directly, with a half-minute comparison video attached. This project's README already includes a 30-second intro clip.

**When to move** : the sooner the better. AI coding has just lowered the bar for these full clones, and good "A → B" pairs will get claimed quickly. Maya → Blender is already taken, and Max → Blender has people working on it.

**What would show you misread it** : if followers like blender-max are still at a few dozen stars a month or two from now, and switching to other software pairs also fails to bring review videos, then Maya's success this time came from its unique scale and those three days of video, not from a repeatable approach.

## Maya Workflow Kit for Blender (5hyuns/maya-workflow-kit-for-blender) research report

> Research date 2026-11-06. Data sources: our GitHub database (repo_profile / repo_day), GitHub API, YouTube pages, and web pages (Jina / Exa crawls).

### One line

A free GPL Blender extension that brings Maya's full set of operating habits into Blender: Hotbox, marking menus, Channel Box, Attribute Editor, menu sets, Shelf, QWERTY tool keys, Alt+mouse navigation. It also carries over Maya concepts such as freeze transforms, delete history, and `pCube1` naming, and includes a "Maya | Blender" toggle that flips back to native Blender in one click. The author is oh hyeon seok (GitHub 5hyuns, Seoul, self-described 3D generalist); the account was registered 2026-01 and this is its only repo.

### Verdict

It took off because **the old "Maya to Blender" demand met a first solution that was actually complete** , then several big Blender YouTube channels pushed it over three consecutive days, from 10/27 to 10/29. Its differentiator is **breadth** : older competitors only ported hotkeys and pie menus, while this one redid Maya's whole interface and concepts, and "it's complete" itself is where the "MINDBLOWING" in the video title came from. The breadth was likely achievable because of AI coding: 932 commits in three weeks, a `claude` contributor, and changelog lines like "steps 192–228" and "audits 14–16". Stars have clearly cooled (daily gains fell from 118 to 5), but releases are still frequent (14 releases in three weeks).

### Growth data

- The repo was created in 2026-10-20 (the changelog shows v0.1.0 as 10-16, meaning earlier development happened elsewhere). Our daily star counts for the repo: 10-24 54 → 10-27 87 → **10-28 158 (+71) → 10-29 276 (+118, single-day high)** → 10-30 336 → 10-31 417 → 11-01 449 → 11-03 486 → 11-06 530; forks 50. Over the last 7 days +194; the status is "newly emerged", and daily gains have already fallen back to 5–25. (Source: GitHub repo_day)

- Downloads: the GitHub Releases attachments still live (v0.8.0 1270, v0.10.0 1266, v0.11.0 713, v0.12.0 218) total about 3.5k. Older release attachments are gone (GitHub API, 2026-11-06). On the Blender Extensions Platform (extensions.blender.org, slug `allset`), v0.5.0 has 576 downloads and v0.6.0 has 121. The search summary shows this listing as "Declined" and 0.6.0 as "Awaiting Review," so **the official store channel has basically not worked out** . GitHub is the main distribution.

- Dev cadence: 14 releases in three weeks (v0.2.0 10-20 to v0.12.0 11-06), 932 commits, 882 of them by the author. External contributors include youngmin2k, TMouraille, onlykshitij and others. A `claude` account also has 2 commits. (GitHub API)

The 3 big videos added up to about 270k views, which brought in about 450 stars and a few thousand downloads. I didn't find any promotional posts by the author on X or Reddit, nor any paid promotion (30 posts in 0 days in the x-radar X corpus). **Spread was mainly organic, from third parties: Japanese CG news sites and insiders shared it first, then YouTube plugin review channels amplified it.**

### Competitors

| Competitors | Where | Launched | Scale | How it differs |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Blender's built-in "Industry Compatible" keymap | Big-company feature (built into Blender) | 2019(2.80) | Every Blender user has it; the official intro video has 56k views | It only changes keybindings, and it's a generic "industry-compatible" scheme, not specifically for Maya. It has no Hotbox or Channel Box and doesn't bring over Maya's concepts |
| Maya Config(FormAffinity) → Maya Config Lite / Pro | Gumroad / Superhive (paid) | More than 7 years ago. The free version was discontinued and became a subscription-based Lite plus a paid Pro | Gumroad free version has 734 ratings. Pro pricing and sales are unverified | Keymaps, pie menus, side shelves. The author himself says it's "not a full emulation of Maya," and it costs money. This one is free and a full recreation |
| EMC Tools (Maya pie menus) | Add-ons | Around 2020 | Small | Pie menus only |
| Maya Project Workflow | Superhive | Not verified | Small | Brings over only Maya's Project Window |
| NateSavage/blender-maya-hotkeys, Zinkenite/Maya-Pivot, OlafHaag/VisMaya_Tools | Open source | 2018–2025 | all under 10 stars | Each brings over one piece (keymap / pivot / toolbar). Its official site opens by targeting these directly: "Other tools bring one piece over: a pivot tool, a keymap, a shelf. This rebuilds the set together" |
| MenuuTUX/maya-scene-io | Open source | 2026-06 | 45 stars | Handles .ma/.mb file import and export and doesn't touch operating habits, so it can complement this add-on |

### Copycats

- **neom315/blender-max** : created 2026-10-23, on the same day 3dnchu covered this one. It does the same for 3ds Max users (Max-style UI, Command Panel, quad menus), and even the description phrasing is similar ("…while keeping Blender's native tools"). 20 stars. It's the first follower of the "port a whole workflow from software X into Blender" approach.

- On Reddit r/3Dmodeling, someone posted the reverse direction: "I made a free, open-source Maya add-on that brings Blender's keys…" (relationship and post date unverified).

- There are also reposts and listings on blendereverything.com, Blendwire, tools.ycfcg.com (Chinese) and gitbap (Korean).

### Why it took off

1. **Old need, sharp pain point** : Maya costs $2,010 a year (per superrendersfarm 2026-09 data), Blender is free, and people have wanted to switch every year, but get stuck on muscle memory. The README line "the software wasn't really the problem. My hands were" hits that exactly. The Disney engineer's post also talks about "15 years of Maya muscle memory."

2. **First truly complete version** : older competitors only ported parts. This one even follows Maya's 2026 menus, shows menu items it can't implement greyed out with reasons, and covers rigging, animation, skin weights and the Graph Editor. The video titles "95%+ of Maya" and "MINDBLOWING" are about exactly this.

3. **One-click revert to native Blender, and free, GPL, no donations required** : there's no lock-in worry and no paywall, so review channels feel safe recommending it. Paid competitors like Maya Config are hard to push through a "new free gem" video.

4. **Several YouTube add-on review channels covered it within three days** : askNK 129k, InspirationTuts 88k, Gamefromscratch 57k views. The star peak falls in those same three days.

5. **Fast releases keep the topic alive** : 14 versions in three weeks, each with a long changelog that names testers and thanks them. External contributors joined by v0.5 (cnzim did the skeleton and weights). Judging by the commit cadence and the `claude` contributor account, it's likely AI-assisted, so one person in three weeks built a "full recreation" that used to take a team willing to attempt it.

6. **Multilingual** : the UI ships with Japanese and Simplified Chinese. The first coverage came from Japanese sites 3dnchu and ModelingTechNote.

### Differentiation

The differentiator is "full recreation" versus "port one piece": it rebuilds Maya's layout, Hotbox, marking menus, Channel Box, Attribute Editor, menu sets, Shelf and scene concepts, built on top of Blender's native tools, and it can switch back with one click. That's why it took off, since every headline and comment in the coverage says it "really looks like Maya." The cost is that the official extensions platform didn't accept it (status Declined), and the author admits it's "still rough in places."

### How many people can see it

Quiet buzz for now. It's already fairly loud in the 3D/CG niche (3 big YouTube videos at about 270k views, with reposts in Japanese, Turkish, Chinese and Korean), but it hasn't reached tech media or big X accounts (0 posts on x-radar), and there's no revenue angle: the project is openly non-commercial.

### What others can borrow

- "Port the whole workflow of app A into open-source app B" can be copied as a series: 3ds Max, Cinema 4D, Houdini → Blender; Photoshop → GIMP/Krita; After Effects → DaVinci Resolve/Natron. blender-max is already following this.

- Opening with "other tools bring one piece over, we bring the whole set" makes breadth the selling point, and AI-assisted coding makes a "full recreation" affordable for a solo dev.

- One-click reversibility ("Installing it changes nothing until you choose Maya") removes the migration fear upfront.

- Free and GPL, plus multilingual UI, makes it easy for CG news sites and YouTubers who review add-ons to repost it. These channels live on add-on affiliate income and traffic, and they've long needed "free gem" topics.

- If you want to make money, you could follow the paid competitors' playbook, Maya Config Pro or Superhive, with a paid version or courses. This project didn't go that way.

### Still unclear

- Why the Blender Extensions Platform rejected it (I only saw "Declined" in the search summary), and how much that hurts long-term distribution.

- Real usage and retention: about 4k+ downloads and 9 open issues. Reddit discussion text couldn't be retrieved (403), so reputation is unverified.

- Maya Config Pro's pricing and sales, which would set the ceiling for the paid direction, are unverified.

- Where 10-20 was developed before (the changelog mentions the old names "Allset for Maya Users" and "Maya Kit"). Who first spotted it on social media (the Lenovo post says "in my socials") is unknown; the original post could not be found.
