24 hours ahead of the big players: how Comma pushed an "open-source Dots" to 474 stars, and why you shouldn't copy this one

What it is An open-source, self-hostable personal AI assistant: it turns tasks you give it into jobs that keep running until done, hands control back to your computer or phone when a login or payment is needed, and can direct Codex and Claude Code to do the work.

Why it blew up After Meta Muse and OpenAI Dots pushed "personal agents" into the spotlight, it claimed the "open-source alternative" spot the next day, then drove two waves of stars with paid X posts, multilingual comparison pages, and a Chinese press release.

CHow you could follow it Stop building open-source Muse/Dots clones. Next time a big company ships a new agent, name it within 72 hours, target only its most-criticized flaw with an open-source alternative, and post on Show HN and Reddit.

C grade: the "new big-company product → instant open-source alternative" playbook is worth learning, but the niche already has 6k openmuse, 3k nanoMuse and dozens of other repos. Comma only got a few hundred stars even with paid promotion, and it fell back once promotion stopped, so copying it isn't worth the effort. Whispers in small circles

Comma is an open-source, self-hostable "always-on personal agent" that showed up on GitHub the day after OpenAI announced Dots. It reached 474 stars in 37 days, not a huge number, but every rise lines up with a promotion: paid X influencer posts, comparison pages for "X alternatives" in a dozen languages, and one press release that appeared on a dozen Chinese sites at once. The playbook is worth studying, but the category is already crowded.

The repo from Sep 30

On Sep 29 in 2026, OpenAI released Dots, a personal agent that handles tasks in the background for you; The Verge, TechCrunch and Wired all covered it that day. Three weeks earlier Meta had launched Muse, which hit 666 points and 742 comments on HN, followed by a round of privacy controversy, and Amazon even blocked its shopping feature.

The next day, Sep 30, AFK AI, a small team of Chinese-American founders in Silicon Valley, created AFK-surf/Comma on GitHub. The last line of the repo description reads: "Selfhost your open source alternative to Muse, Dots, Instinct and Town", naming all four of the hottest personal agents at the time. Two days later, Reveneau, an AI-generated news site, described it as "145 stars".

Co-founder Heyang Zhou (known on GitHub as losfair) has worked at Deno, Vercel and ByteDance. This wasn't their first time: two other repos under the AFK organization follow the same pattern, one called open-agent (1,051 stars, "open-source alternative to Claude Agent SDK / Manus") and one called OpenBridge (433 stars, "open-source alternative to Claude Cowork"). Big company launches something, open-source clone appears within days: this is their third time.

What it actually does

In one sentence: you hand it a task, it turns that task into a "Task" that keeps running in the cloud until finished, and steps that require logging in or paying are handed back to your own Mac or phone. The README calls this "sessionless": the conversation is just the interface, and the Task is the thing that stays alive.

A few real differences:

  • It can treat Codex and Claude Code as Worker subordinates to dispatch, and it can use your ChatGPT / Claude subscription directly, without necessarily needing an API key.
  • "Work runs in the cloud, identity stays on the device": long-running tasks execute in the cloud, while payment and login sessions stay on your device.
  • The backend is written in Elixir / OTP, with one process per agent, and it uses Lean and TLA+ for formal verification to guarantee that "tasks aren't lost and side effects aren't executed twice".
  • It integrates WeChat, Feishu, Slack and Telegram, clearly catering to Chinese-speaking teams.

The hosted version at comma.surf is free to use (bring your own key), Pro is $80/month for roughly 300–600 agent tasks; the team plan is $80/person/month; self-hosting is under AGPL. Whether anyone is actually paying is not visible from outside.

Data: daily GitHub star counts (from 10-17 onward) and day-by-day data from trendshift.io; the dates on the two sides differ by one day because of different time zone conventions.

Point by point.

Paid X posts. The one posted by @riyazmd on Oct 9774 had the text "Most AI agents wait for your next prompt. comma keeps the work moving.", quoting the official @CommaAgents video, with X's "Paid partnership" label at the bottom of the post. The next day @HeyAmit_ posted nearly the same copy. The replies were a row of mutual-engagement accounts. Searching comma.surf in X's major accounts turns up no organic reposts.

Programmatic SEO. The comma.surf sitemap contains 1,020 pages, 10 in many languages × "Meta Muse alternative", "Instinct alternative", "OpenClaw alternative", "Grok Bot alternative", "connect Claude Code", "connect Codex", "connect WeChat"… specifically targeting search terms like "X alternative".

Chinese press release. DeepSeek published a long article about Super-agent in late October. On the afternoon of Nov 2, Xiou (希鸥网) ran "DeepSeek just drew the blueprint; this Silicon Valley Chinese team had already run its code inside enterprise networks half a year ago", opening with a developer @-mentioning the Comma bot in Feishu to pull error logs, and a colleague asking in Slack about the competitive analysis progress. Xiou's navigation bar includes "press release distribution" and "seeking coverage". The same article appeared on Ruiceo, 36 Caixin's English Europe edition, Juhaohao, NetEase, and several AI product directories. The two days 11-02 and 11-03 together added about 90 stars, which accounts for the entire spike that week. (The article says Comma launched in Apr 2026 28 and had been running for half a year, which is the company's own claim; on GitHub, this repo was created on Sep 30.)

The title keeps chasing trends. Looking again on Nov 6, the repo title had changed from "AI personal assistant" to "super agent", the exact term from DeepSeek's long article; "Instinct" had been dropped from the alternatives list. When Grok Bot was hot in late October, a third party had captured a version reading "open-source Grok Bot alternative".

Beyond that, there's a batch of news sites that scrape new GitHub repos to auto-write articles, Facebook pages, YouTube Shorts, and a long post on r/AI_Agents in a team voice, "Muse, Instinct, Dots—and why personal agents need continuity" (presumably posted by the team itself). It never reached the Hacker News front page and was never launched on Product Hunt.

open-instinct, xiryn, Open Dot, OpenMausBot…OctoberA few hundred starsThe same kind of "open-source alternative"

On the closed-source side there's Meta Muse, OpenAI Dots, Instinct (used via iMessage / WhatsApp), Town which just raised a $108M Series B, and Manus Cue.

In other words, the "open-source Muse / Dots" slot was already filled by dozens of repos between mid-September and October. Comma came two weeks after openmuse, and even with paid promotion it got only a thirteenth of openmuse's stars. I haven't seen anyone building specifically on Comma.

Solid engineering, why so few stars?

Elixir, Lean and TLA+ do look rigorous against a pile of TypeScript wrappers, but people browsing repos can't see formal verification; they look at the name, the one-line description and the timing. openmuse's name carries "Muse" and came two weeks earlier; Comma's name has nothing to do with Muse or Dots, so it had to rely on stacking keywords into its description.

Two more things held it back: the GitHub repo is just a sync mirror of a private main repo, with commit history full of "Sync Comma source" and only 2 external PRs merged in 38 days. Choosing Elixir let it dominate the Elixir chart on trendshift (a dozen-odd stars was enough for first place), but the Elixir community is small, so fewer people can contribute code.

Its differentiation ultimately became mainly material for sponsored articles: "half a year ahead of DeepSeek".

If it were you

Verdict: Learn its playbook, but don't follow its direction. The "open-source Muse / Dots" slot is already crowded, and being the 30th entrant earned only a few hundred stars even with paid promotion.

Who it's for: Solo devs or 2–3 person teams who can ship a working demo in 24–48 hours and watch big-tech launches like hawks. Bonus if you know a niche ecosystem (Elixir, Rust, Go, Swift) or a specific audience (Chinese-speaking teams, a particular IM app).

Who it's not for: Anyone who wants to build a big all-in-one personal agent platform and expects engineering quality alone to grow stars, or anyone unwilling to put competitor names in the repo description.

How to do it: Wait for the next big-tech agent launch, then ship the repo the same day or the next, with the product's name or a feature keyword in the repo name (openmuse won here, Comma lost here). Open the description with "open-source alternative to X". Only tackle the feature people complain about most: Muse got roasted for privacy, so do "data stays on your machine". Don't build a full suite. You can also switch ecosystems: a Go, Rust, or Swift port of a popular TS project, or a Chinese version wired to WeChat or Feishu.

How to get users: Post Show HN, r/LocalLLaMA and r/selfhosted; make a short demo video for X; pick an obscure language and sit on the trendshift language chart for a few days. Chinese-language press placements buy a day or two of lift, then it drops off. Comma already showed that.

Timing: Within 72 hours of the big-tech launch. After a week, the front spots are taken by projects like openmuse.

Signs you've misread it: ① Comma gained over 1,000 stars in a month with no new promotion, which means people value the engineering difference and the niche isn't saturated. ② Heavyweights like openmuse and nanoMuse stopped gaining stars in November, meaning the "open-source alternative" wave has cooled and you need a different playbook. ③ A "open-source Dots" repo created in November passes 3,000 stars within a month, meaning there's still room.

Data and sources: GitHub repo pages and daily star counts (10-17 to 11-06); trendshift.io/repositories/273822; Reveneau coverage; X posts by @riyazmd774(10-09) and @HeyAmit_(10-10); comma.surf sitemap and pricing page (11-06); Xi'ou News (希鸥网) article 2026-11-02 and reposts on 36 Kr Europe, Ruì CEO, NetEase, and Juheng; Hacker News and Product Hunt launch records; GitHub pages for openmuse, nanoMuse and nanobot.

Why AFK-surf/Comma got traction (it was really only a small run)

Channel: GitHub | Research date 2026-11-06 | Repo github.com/AFK-surf/Comma | Site comma.surf

One line

Comma is an open-source, self-hostable "always-on personal agent" from AFK AI, Inc., a small Silicon Valley Chinese team (co-founder Heyang Zhou / GitHub losfair, formerly Deno, Vercel, ByteDance). Requests become persistent Tasks that keep running in a cloud agent loop until done, hand back to your Mac/phone when identity or payment is needed, and can dispatch Codex or Claude Code as Workers. The hosted comma.surf is free with Pro at $80/month. It didn't grow organically on product reputation. It launched the day after the Meta Muse (9/8) and OpenAI Dots (9/29) "personal agent" wave, positioned as an open-source alternative on day 9/30, then pushed in three rounds: paid X creators, programmatic SEO, and Chinese press releases, lifting stars to about 474. Scale is still small.

I. Data (our database + trendshift)

  • Created on 2026-09-30, 145 stars in the first two days (Reveneau covered it on 2026-10-02).
  • Our GitHub database: 10-17 265 → 11-06 474; last 7 days +123, first 7 days +22.
  • Three peaks (daily, from trendshift.io/repositories/273822):
    • 10-01~10-10: +5~23 per day, ranked #1 on the Elixir language chart for several days (Elixir is a niche, low-barrier category).
    • 10-20~21: +16, +39 (10-20 official blog posted "Meet Comma", with a Linear integration listing the same period, relayed by the Czech site radyz.cz).
    • 11-01~02: +46, +44 from mass Chinese press releases (see below). From 11-03 it fell back to single digits, and on 11-06 it added only +1.
  • 38 forks; only 38 merged PRs in 2 days; the GitHub repo is a sync mirror of a private main repo (commits are all "Sync Comma source"), so a pushed_at date stuck at 10-27 doesn't mean development stopped.
  • The stargazers endpoint returns 404 for this repo (cause unverified), so star account quality can't be checked.
  • Not on HN (no record in the hackernews database) and not launched on Product Hunt (no record in the producthunt database). No AFK Comma app found in the App Store database (the site claims Mac/iPhone/iPad/Android clients, and Android has a GitHub release).

open-instinct, xiryn, Open Dot, OpenMausBot, Bits, Melete…Open-source / Product Hunt side projects2026-10Hundreds of stars / PH 80~90 pointsHomogenized "open-source alternative"

Verdict: the niche is extremely crowded, and Comma's scale doesn't crack the top few open-source alternatives. What truly sets it apart is the engineering (see differentiation).

3. Growth tactics (with evidence)

  1. Riding a big-company launch (confirmed): Dots launched 9/29, Comma started its repo 9/30; the first line of the README reads "Selfhost your open source alternative to Muse, Dots, Instinct and Town". The repo description keeps getting tweaked for keywords (a third-party tracker, githubsignals, once captured a "open-source Grok Bot alternative" version, and Grok Bot was hot in late October).
  2. Paid X influencers (confirmed): @riyazmd774 (10-09) and @HeyAmit_ (10-10) reposted the official @CommaAgents video. The posts are tagged with X's "Paid partnership" label, the copy follows the same script (Q4 plan, Linear, Notion examples, matching the official demo), and the replies are typical engagement-pod accounts. Searching our local x-radar corpus for comma.surf/CommaAgents returns nothing, so it never spread organically to big accounts.
  3. Programmatic SEO (confirmed): comma.surf's sitemap has 1,020 URLs, roughly 10+ languages × (alternatives/meta-muse, instinct, hermes, openclaw, grok-bot; integrations/claude-code, codex, wechat…; a blog series "what is a personal agent"). It's built to capture searches like "X alternative" and "personal agent".
  4. Mass Chinese press releases (confirmed): Around DeepSeek's 10-31 Super-agent long-form post, from 11-01~04 the same article was syndicated across many sites: "DeepSeek just drew the blueprint; this Silicon Valley Chinese team had its code running inside enterprise networks half a year ago" (Xiou Wang, whose site nav literally says "submit a press release / seek coverage"), Rui CEO, Chuangxin Daily (asia-brand), 36 36Kr EU English edition, Cnyes, NetEase, Coder Liang, AI Product Library, and Yunzhan Community. That lines up with 11-01/02 two days of +90 stars, and is the direct cause of the 7-day spike.
  5. AI news auto-posts / aggregator sites (confirmed, passive): Reveneau (AI-written), radyz.cz, mrkeyoor, githubsignals, gittrend.io's Facebook page, Threads @theaicontinuum, YouTube Shorts. Most are auto-generated by scraping new GitHub repos.
  6. Likely a Reddit self-promotion (not confirmed): the r/AI_Agents post "Muse, Instinct, Dots—and why personal agents need continuity" has a summary reading "Comma, an open-source personal agent. We call it sessionless," which sounds like team voice (the full post was not read, as Reddit 403).
  7. Team asset migration (inferred): The AFK org already has open-agent (1,051 stars, "open-source alternative to Claude Agent SDK/Manus") and OpenBridge (433, "open-source alternative to Claude Cowork"). The org totals ~2,000 stars and 61 followers; the founder has 1,475 followers. Same play every time: a big company launches something new, and within days they ship an open-source alternative.

4. Why it made the list

  • Timing: Muse and Dots made "personal agents" a mainstream topic, and Muse's privacy scandal created demand for an open-source, self-hosted version. Comma claimed the spot the next day.
  • Riding names for positioning: The description is packed with high-search terms like Muse, Dots, Instinct, Town, Codex, and Claude Code, which feed both GitHub search and SEO.
  • Paid promotion: Paid X influencers plus Chinese press releases. Both star peaks line up with promotion dates, and when promotion stopped the stars fell back.
  • Engineering credibility: Elixir/OTP + Lean formal verification + TLA+ models look hardcore next to a pile of TypeScript wrappers, which makes it easy for tech media to frame it as "half a year ahead of DeepSeek".
  • Niche language chart: The bar for trendshift's Elixir chart is low. A dozen stars can rank #1, which brings steady exposure.

5. Differentiation

  • "Sessionless": The persistent state is the Task, not the conversation. A Router acts as the brain, with independent Worker sessions, reducing context pollution.
  • "Work runs in the cloud, identity stays on the device": Long tasks run in the cloud, while payment/login state is handed back to your Mac (Salix) or phone.
  • Dispatches existing coding agents (Codex, Claude Code, Pi, Kimi) as Workers. Can use ChatGPT/Claude subscriptions, not just API keys.
  • Loops: the agent writes small programs that watch your inbox/repos, and it burns no LLM tokens while things are quiet.
  • Engineering: one Erlang VM process per agent, with Lean/TLA+ verifying that "no tasks are lost and side effects aren't executed twice".
  • A dual track of hosted plus AGPL self-hosting, and it integrates WeChat and Feishu (aimed at Chinese-speaking teams).

These differences are real, but they're not the main reason it spread. Users never see the formal verification, and most of the stars came on promotion days. The differentiation has mostly been used as media narrative material ("half a year ahead of DeepSeek").

6. Visibility and copycats

  • Revenue is undisclosed; TrustMRR has no record (none found); hosted Pro is $80/month, and whether anyone pays is unknown.
  • No coverage from big X accounts, HN, PH, or mainstream tech media. It only appears in Chinese paid articles and auto-aggregator sites → it's being talked about in small circles (and mostly pushed by themselves).
  • Haven't seen anyone clearly copying Comma. Conversely, the whole "open-source Muse/Dots alternative" niche is already saturated (openmuse 6k, nanoMuse 3k, etc.).

VII. What to take away

  • "Big company launches something new → open-source alternative within 24 hours + README stuffed with competitor names". AFK has done this three times, each time getting hundreds to thousands of stars.
  • Landing page built as "X alternative" comparison pages × multilingual programmatic SEO.
  • Paid X influencers reuse the same official demo video. Low cost, and the disclosure labels are compliant.
  • Riding hot news with press releases: on the day a big company or DeepSeek publishes a concept piece, push out a "we already built this" article, then syndicate it across a dozen-plus Chinese publishing sites at once.
  • Picking an obscure language (Elixir) lets you hold the trendshift language chart for a long time.

8. Not sure

  • Whether stars were inflated: the stargazers API shows 404, and I can't verify account quality.
  • No data on hosted users, paying customers, or retention. Whether it's listed on the App Store under a different name or developer is unverified.
  • Team size and funding are not publicly found.
  • Couldn't read the body of the Reddit post, so the author's identity is unconfirmed.
