One press release, one booth, a batch of alt accounts: how Agnes Harness got its 1,800 stars

What it is An open-source TypeScript agent runtime from Agnes AI, a Singapore/Nanjing AI company. It handles tool calling, process logging, approvals, and session recovery, and it includes the company's own device protocol for connecting robot dogs and robotic arms. It's still pre-alpha.

Why it took off It wasn't driven by developer word of mouth. A 10-11 Xinzhiyuan press release brought the first wave, a 10-21–23 Nanjing expo plus a GitHubDaily recommendation brought the second, and after 10-28 there were no external events, yet stars kept rising steadily every day, while most new forks came from alt-account farms.

DHow you could follow this Don't build a harness like this one. The top of this track is DeepSeek at 270k stars plus a string of big-company frameworks. What you can borrow is its Chinese launch rhythm (press release with link → expo demo → big-account repost), pairing infrastructure with demos that can be filmed, and engineering details like pinning plugins per session and three-tier approvals.

Grade D: the stars came from the company's media, expo resources, and likely purchased tails, which individual developers can't get. Agent harness is one of the most crowded open-source areas this year. Building something similar, or rewriting it in another language, rarely earns the same stars. Spreading in small circles

An AI model company that raised funding open-sourced its own agent harness and gained about 1,800 stars in 45 days. Each step on the star chart matches something the company arranged: a tech media article, an expo in Nanjing, and a recommendation from a Chinese open-source account. The last ten days had no external event, yet stars rose steadily each day, and most of the new forks came from alt accounts that fork other people's repos. Below: what it is, where the stars came from, how crowded the track is, and how much of this playbook you can borrow.

Oct 11, 10 a.m.: a "game-changer"

On Oct 11, 2026 at 10 a.m., Xinzhiyuan published an article titled "Just in: AI circles' game-changer! Achieving 'a shared brain for all things', jailbreaking from brain and embodied AI into reality," which Sina Finance also carried. The opening line was "Physical AI is becoming one of the most watched directions in the AI industry." The third paragraph announced that "Agnes Harness (AGH) is officially open source," and a standalone line in the middle of the text gave the GitHub address. The same article launched two things: the MHS device protocol went open source, and the new Agnes 3.0 Pro model had "API coming soon." The demo was an office cart that, on a voice command, went to a shelf, found a specified book, and read it aloud.

The repo was created on Sep 22 and had only about 90 stars by Oct 11, with commits only from insiders. Over the three days after the article, stars rose from 124 to 322 and then to 498,10-14, with a single-day +198, its highest day to date (GitHub, daily stars). 10-13 It appeared on Trendshift's TypeScript chart only once, ranking #23.

What it is

In one sentence: A TypeScript agent runtime where the model decides the next step, and it calls tools, logs the process, manages approvals, and resumes sessions.

The README positions it as "a pluggable agent harness for Forward Deployed Engineering (FDE)." The idea is that engineers do custom work on customer sites, and the tools, workflows, and interfaces built on site are packaged as plugins that the next customer can reuse. Its feature list is standard for this year's comparable frameworks: a web workbench, CLI, TUI, and SDK sharing one backend session; a "trajectory" page that replays each tool call the agent made over time; approvals in three tiers ("this time only / allow for this session / deny"); and integration with MCP and Skills storage. Two details are done with care: when plugins are hot-upgraded, running sessions stay pinned to the old version and aren't affected; and candidate plugins the agent writes itself must be human-reviewed before release.

What no rival has is MHS (Model Hardware Standard), the company's own device protocol for putting robot dogs, robotic arms, and carts into one runtime. The README itself says MHS is "integration in progress." The project is labeled developer preview / pre-alpha, must be built from source, and requires Node 24.10 or later.

The company behind it is Agnes AI. Its Singapore entity is Sapiens AI, founded by Yang Tong in 2024. Media reports say it claims 5M users and nearly $20M ARR, and completed a Series A. In August 2026 it set up its China headquarters in Nanjing (Yahoo Finance 3-17, Phoenix Jiangsu 8-13). All 12 contributors to the repo are company people, one account made nearly 3,000 commits, and not a single PR came from outside.

Where the stars came from

Put the daily star count next to the company's moves:

DateCumulative starsDaily new installsWhat happened those days
09-22 ~ 10-110 → about 90single digits to a dozenOnly insiders committing
10-12 ~ 10-14124 → 49867 / 198 / about 17010-11 Xinzhiyuan press release

Source: GitHub daily stars and forks for 10-17 through 11-06 (earlier days estimated from daily totals); Trendshift.

The second wave came from a trade show. On Oct 22, the Chinese open-source account GitHubDaily posted on X: "These past few days at the physical AI and world model conference in Nanjing, the Agnes AI booth drew the biggest crowd among the exhibitors. A robot dog and Wall-E were interacting on site, and the big screens played demos of AI playing Honor of Kings and robotic arm grasping. Behind these demos is Agnes Harness, the framework they open-sourced recently." The post included the repo link and added: "In matches, the LLM plans strategy in real time, reviews after each game, and adjusts its own strategy and execution code, with a win rate of 100%." The repo gained about 100 stars a day over those three days. The company August had just moved its HQ to Nanjing, so this booth was home turf.

Beyond that, there was a "Get Started On GitHub" button on the official landing page, demo videos of Honor of Kings posted by the official X, LinkedIn and Instagram accounts, and a post titled "Why Choose Agnes Harness" on GitCode. The English developer community was almost silent: searching "Agnes Harness" on X over the past 60 days turned up almost nothing, and I found no one discussing it on HN or Reddit.

The last ten days looked off

After October 28 there were no press releases, no trade shows, and no big accounts reposting, yet stars kept rising steadily by dozens a day. Forks doubled in those ten days, and the star-to-fork ratio was clearly higher than before.

Can we see which accounts starred it? No, the stargazer list for this repo can't be opened. But the forking accounts are visible. Of the roughly 60 new forks since 10-28, 45 accounts have 0 followers, and 53 accounts have over 80% of their own repos forked from elsewhere, with names like becky89j and shirley2749-dunn7. Sampling 40 of these accounts to see what else they forked shows the same unrelated small repos forked again and again: 12 accounts forked chainreason, 11 forked univ3-pool-lens, and 10 forked lighthouse-router. This is the typical look of a paid promotion account pool. Fork farming is confirmed; how many stars are bought can only be inferred, since the list isn't visible.

So these 1,800 stars come in roughly three phases: one from press coverage, one from the trade show plus big accounts, and the last very likely purchased. None of it came from developers organically recommending it after using it.

How crowded this space is

In 2026, "agent harness" was one of the most crowded areas in open source. More than a dozen repos with over 10,000 stars use the term in their descriptions:

ProjectLaunchedScaleHow Agnes Harness compares
deepseek-ai/deepseek-harness2026-08274k stars, nearly +8,000 in a weekAn official harness from a model company with the slogan "Everything is a Plugin"; Agnes's line "everything you deploy is a plugin" is almost the same phrase, two months later
bytedance/deer-flow2025-0585K starsByteDance's long-task agent framework
langchain-ai/deepagents2025-0731K starsA general-purpose "batteries included" harness with the largest ecosystem
strands-agents/harness-sdk(AWS)2025-059k starsA production-grade SDK in the AWS ecosystem

open-multi-agent/open-multi-agent2026-037k starsSelf-hosted TypeScript runtime, persistent approvals, verifiable run records; functionally the closest to Agnes

Above that sit the de facto standards: OpenAI Agents SDK, Claude Agent SDK, LangGraph. Agnes Harness has the fewest 1,800 stars in this table, and its difference isn't in features but in the story it tells: FDEs, its in-house decision model Jev, and the device protocol MHS. So far, nobody has been seen following its lead.

Why it got these stars

  • The company has resources. Funding, media relationships, and a trade show on home turf in Nanjing are things only a company has. The open-sourcing was announced alongside a new model and a device protocol, essentially part of a product launch.
  • It rode two hot terms. After DeepSeek's Harness went viral in August, "model companies shipping official harnesses" became standard practice. In the same month, brokerage research notes framed "FDE × Harness" as an investment theme. Agnes put both terms in one tagline.
  • The demos are photogenic. AI playing Honor of Kings, a robot dog greeting Wall-E, a car finding a book: these suit press releases and big screens at trade shows. But developers want something they can install and use, and these demos don't solve that.

What's still unclear

  • How many stars were bought can't be verified, since the list isn't visible; it can only be inferred from forks.
  • Whether the Xinzhiyuan article and GitHubDaily post were paid placements is unverified.
  • I found no case of any team outside the company actually using it in production.

If it were you

D. Watch its release rhythm, but don't copy it. Its stars come from a company's launch resources plus a likely purchased tail, not from a good project growing on its own. In the space it sits in, the leaders are DeepSeek at 270k stars and a string of big-company frameworks. An individual developer building a harness like this won't get its press coverage or booth, and won't make it into this table.

Who it suits: people at a company who run open-source launches and have press budgets and offline events. Its Chinese-language combination can be scheduled almost step for step.

Who it doesn't suit: individual developers who want to build stars and reputation through one open-source project. Building another agent harness, or doing it in another language, means heading into the most crowded spot.

If you want to borrow something, here's how:

  1. Copy the launch rhythm: on open-source day, publish a Chinese tech media article that links the GitHub repo, do a live demo at an industry event a week later, then have a Chinese open-source account like GitHubDaily write it up. Each wave might bring in a few hundred stars.
  2. For infrastructure projects, pair them with a demo that can be filmed (playing games, controlling hardware). Individuals can use this too; a 30-second video spreads better than a README.
  3. If you're already building an agent framework, three engineering details are worth copying: pin plugin versions per session, require human review before plugins written by the agent get published, and split approvals into three tiers. Using these to fill gaps in your own project beats starting yet another framework.
  4. Don't copy the bought accounts. Anyone who has looked at the fork list can recognize an account pool at a glance, and for an individual developer a damaged reputation is worse than having fewer stars.

How it gets users: in the Chinese community it relies on tech media and big accounts; in the English community it hasn't even opened its own doors. If you go the English route, start with Show HN on HN, r/LocalLLaMA on Reddit, and a demo that actually runs. It has done none of these.

When to go before it: there's no rush. Interest in the term "harness" is still high, but the top spots are already taken.

What would show I got it wrong: ① Over the next month or two, outside contributors and PRs appear, and an external team publicly says it runs it in production. That would mean it's more than a launch byproduct, and the FDE plugin path deserves serious attention. ② MHS actually connects a batch of third-party hardware and hardware vendors follow. Then "agents connecting to physical devices" is a gap not yet crowded, and a lighter standalone device-access project could be worth building. ③ Conversely, if stars stall quickly without new events, that confirms the last ten days were bought.

AgnesAI-Labs/agnes-harness (Agnes Harness / AGH) research report

Date: 2026-11-06 · Channel: GitHub · One-line conclusion: It wasn't driven by product word of mouth. It's a company-level open-source project from a funded AI model company (Agnes AI / Sapiens, founder Bruce Yang Tong), pushed on a rhythm of product launch + Chinese tech media articles + offline conference booth + big-account reposts. The steady star growth after late October is accompanied by clear signs of a fork-farming account pool.

1. What it is

  • An open-source "agent harness" written in TypeScript (Apache-2.0, developer preview / pre-alpha, must be built from source, Node ≥24.10). It positions itself for Forward Deployed Engineering (FDE, on-site delivery engineering): customer-specific differences are all made into plugins (tools, agent loop, model adapters, web panel, Skills, MCP). The harness handles running, recording (Trace), approvals, session recovery, and keeps old sessions pinned to old plugin versions during hot upgrades, with Web / CLI / TUI / SDK sharing one backend session. (Source: repo README, read 2026-11-06)
  • Narrative packaging: "The LLM is the brain, Jev (the in-house decision model) is the cerebellum, the Harness is memory, and MHS (the in-house Model Hardware Standard device protocol) is the body." Accompanying demos include AI playing Honor of Kings as recursive self-improvement (RSI), a robotic arm, virtual Mars rescue, and a book-finding car.
  • Size: about 50MB of TypeScript; the committer 495696116 alone made 2959 commits, with Onetaway and lookfree at about ~700 each; all 12 contributors are company insiders (all PRs come from internal accounts). (Source: GitHub API contributors / issues)
  • Parent company: Agnes AI (Singapore Sapiens AI / domestic entity registered as Keji), founded by Bruce Yang Tong in 2024; it claims 5M users and nearly $20M ARR, with a Series A of $10M–$20M, and 2026-08 established its China headquarters in Nanjing. (Sources: itbrief.asia, Yahoo Finance 2026-03-17, techinasia, Phoenix Net Jiangsu 2026-08-13) The same organization also has AgnesAI-Models (5.2k stars) and a series of model card / technical report repos.

3. Competitors (doing the same thing)

"Agent harness" was one of the most crowded open-source tracks in 2026; in our database, a dozen-plus repos with agent harness in their description have over 10k stars:

Palantir AIP and other FDE delivery vendorsOther—CommercialThe FDE concept itself comes from Palantir; AGH uses it as an open-source narrative label, with no commercial delivery product to compare against

Bottom line: at the feature level AGH has nothing unique (plugins, approvals, Trace, MCP, Skills, session recovery are all standard for 2026-era harnesses); the difference is only narrative: FDE + its own hardware protocol MHS + its own decision model Jev. And its star count (1.8k) is tiny for this track.

4. Growth tactics (evidence)

  1. Chinese tech media press release (confirmed): On 2026-10-11, New Intelligence published "Breaking: AI world drops a bombshell! Realizing 'one brain for all things', from brain to embodiment, jailbreaking into reality"; reposted by Sina Finance, with the GitHub address right in the body. Stars rose ~400 over the next three days, the biggest peak of the whole run. Press releases like this from New Intelligence are usually tied to company launch events. (https://finance.sina.com.cn/stock/t/2026-10-11/doc-iniuvhur7366578.shtml)
  2. Booth at an offline conference + repost by a big account (confirmed): 2026-10-22 GitHubDaily (a major Chinese open-source account) posted: "At the physical AI and world model conference in Nanjing... the Agnes AI booth was especially busy... these demos are built on the Agnes Harness framework they open-sourced recently," with a repo link. 10-21~23 marks the second small spike (about 100–124 stars per day). August just set up its China HQ in Nanjing, so the booth was home turf. (https://x.com/GitHub_Daily/status/2113134108901830776)
  3. Owned channels (confirmed, small volume): Landing page agnes-ai.com/agnes-harness with a "Get Started On GitHub" button; the official X @agnesai_sapiens, LinkedIn, Instagram and Facebook posted the RSI Honor of Kings demo and live demos from the "SuperAI Agentic Night"; a GitCode blog post from 10-22 is a Chinese SEO article "Why choose Agnes Harness". Searching our X corpus (x-radar, 60 days) for "agnes harness" and "AgnesAI" returned zero results, so there was no organic spread on English X.
  4. Offline code-giveaway activity (confirmed to exist, weak link to GitHub): The org's agnes-gift repo (created 10-18) is the bill-payment QR page for the "Agnes Restaurant" demo: the bill is stamped "this meal's on me" and gives out Pavo AI redemption codes. It is a user-acquisition gimmick for exhibitions and events, and it points to Pavo AI, not to the repo.
  5. Fork-botting / account-pool traces (confirmed present, scale inferred): The repo's stargazer list API returns 404, so starring accounts aren't visible; only forks can be checked. Of the 108 forks, 62 accounts have 0 followers, and 80 accounts have repos that are ≥80% forks. Of the 60 forks after 10-28, 45 come from accounts with 0 followers, and 53 are "accounts that exist just to fork others." I sampled 40 recent fork accounts to see what else they forked: 12 also forked chainreason, 11 univ3-pool-lens, 10 lighthouse-router, 9 Synapse, 9 solidity-cot-auditor, 8 Pekingman... A group of unrelated small repos are being repeatedly forked by the same batch of accounts, and the account names look like becky89j, shirley2749-dunn7, tomelpqueentree, typical of a paid promotion account pool. Another 6 accounts also forked the org's own AgnesAI-Models. After 10-28, there were zero external events, yet daily additions stayed steady at 40–78 and the fork/star ratio was abnormally high, which matches the account-pool timing. (Source: GitHub API forks / users, fetched 2026-11-06)
  6. Not found: mentions on HN, Reddit, paid ads, TikTok or Xiaohongshu content.

5. Why it charted

  • Parent company resources + launch cadence: Agnes AI has funding, a narrative of 5M consumer users, and an HQ with Nanjing government backing; AGH was "launched" alongside Agnes 3.0 Pro and MHS, and the New Intelligence press release pushed it to the first peak.
  • Rode two hot keywords: In the second half of 2026, "agent harness" and "FDE" were both hot terms in the Chinese market (Guotai Junan's August research report treated FDE×Harness as an investment theme, and xdash's FDE intro book has 5.4k stars). After DeepSeek Harness blew up in August, model companies building official harnesses became standard practice. AGH put both hot terms into one slogan.
  • Highly visual demos: AI playing Honor of Kings, robot dogs, a book-finding cart, Mars rescue. Good for booth displays and press images, but not the kind of selling point developers spread on their own.
  • The second half likely relied on fake stars: After 10-28 there were no external events, but daily growth was steady and accompanied by account-pool forks.
  • No evidence of external users: 6 open issues, and all PRs came from inside; the README itself says pre-alpha and the API will change.

6. Differentiation

Claimed differentiators: (a) built for FDE on-site delivery, with each deployment distilled into a reusable plugin; (b) plugin versions are pinned per session, so hot upgrades don't affect sessions in progress; (c) approvals + Trace + manual review of candidate plugins; (d) its own device protocols MHS/MOS connect physical devices to the same runtime. (b) and (c) are solid engineering details, (a) is narrative, and (d) is the only thing others don't have, but the README says MHS is "integration in progress," and the Mars rescue video is an older recording.

Is that why it took off? No. The star peaks line up with the press release and the conference dates, not with any feature launch. The differentiation helped the press release and booth tell a story, but it did not generate organic discussion among English-speaking developers.

7. Visibility and copycats

  • The parent company's funding and ARR were widely covered by media; AGH itself only appeared in Chinese tech media (New Intelligence, GitHubDaily, GitCode), while English X / Reddit / HN barely mentioned it. It's a "buzzing in a small circle," and a circle the company itself pushed out.
  • Revenue: AGH has no revenue of its own; the parent company self-reports close to $20M ARR (Yahoo Finance 2026-03).
  • Copycats: none. If anything, AGH itself is a follower of DeepSeek Harness's "everything is a plugin" path.

8. What others can learn

  • The standard Chinese open-source launch combo: a New Intelligence-style press release on launch day (GitHub link in the body), then a week later a booth at an industry conference plus a GitHubDaily-style big-account repost; each wave can bring in a few hundred stars.
  • Pairing dry infrastructure with strong visual demos (games, robots) for media and booth use.
  • Technically: pinning plugins to sessions, manually reviewing candidate plugins before release, and three approval tiers ("once / this session / deny") are details worth copying for enterprise delivery scenarios.

9. Uncertain

  • The stargazer list isn't visible, so whether stars were botted can't be verified directly; the evidence of fork-botting is solid, but the scale of stars can only be inferred.
  • Whether New Intelligence and GitHubDaily charge for coverage is unverified.
  • Whether any real external enterprise uses AGH is unverified (no external cases found).
  • The exact name and date of the Nanjing conference come only from the GitHubDaily post.
