# Five days early: vox-director and the "Vox paper-collage" video wave, 2,600 stars

**What it is** A skill for Claude Code and Codex: give it a topic in one line, and it writes the storyboard, generates collage visuals, adds motion, voiceover and music, and assembles a Vox-style paper-collage mp4.

**Why it took off** In mid-July, AI paper-collage videos suddenly blew up on X and YouTube. vox-director launched a few days before the wave and could output a full video directly, so Chinese KOLs ranked it first in their roundups. The author, a marketing lead at an API platform, spent three days submitting it to a dozen-plus awesome lists and self-recommendation channels, and added metadata so directory sites would index it automatically. Afterward it gained a steady 10–25 stars per day.

**C** **How you could follow it** Stop doing paper collage and follow the next visual style: once a certain AI video look starts getting tutorials but has no ready-made tool, open-source a skill that outputs a complete video within a week. Put a playable sample video at the top of the README, and within 72 hours get listed on awesome lists, newsletter self-recommendations, and directory sites.

C grade: the paper-collage wave was July's, dozens of similar projects already exist, and the top three got a four-month head start, so building another one won't earn stars. What's worth learning is the playbook: open-source a complete pipeline just ahead of the wave, spend 72 hours seeding channels, and capture the long tail from directories, applied to the next style. An agent skill: type one line of a topic, get a Vox-style paper-collage explainer video. It launched a few days before the wave, and its author works in growth. Over three days they seeded more than a dozen recommendation channels, and it reached 2,663 stars in 119 days. Below: what it is, how the stars came, who is competing for them, and whether you should still build a similar one now.

### A recommendation post

2026 Jul 19: On X, a Chinese account called Serena 木瓜 (@369Serena) posted: "Vox Style videos are blowing up on X!!! Here are a few GitHub repos worth following: 1️⃣ vox-director 2️⃣ vox-explainer-skill 3️⃣ gbro-collage-broll". Her bio reads "CGS Agency KOL operations · global KOL resources". Alisa Qian, author of the first repo, replied underneath: "Thanks for the recommendation".

At that point vox-director was only 9 days old. The day before, the author had posted their own Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone paper-collage short made with it, captioned "Install the vox-director-skill and try it," with 225 views.

By Nov 6 it had 2,663 stars and 369 forks (GitHub, 11-06). The third-ranked gbro-collage-broll had 1,737 stars, and the second-ranked vox-explainer-skill only 155.

### What it is

A skill for coding agents such as Claude Code and Codex. You tell the agent "make me a Vox-style collage video about Mexican street food, in English, 16:9,15 seconds," and it will:

1. First write a storyboard beat sheet for you to confirm;

2. Render the same shot in three or four styles so you can pick one;

3. Then automatically generate each beat's collage poster (nano-banana-2), animate the posters (gemini-omni-flash image-to-video, Kling for real people), add narration (xai/tts) and music (minimax/music), and finally use ffmpeg locally to assemble an mp4 with subtitles and a watermark.

"Paper collage" refers to the look of Vox explainer videos: hand-torn paper edges, tape, halftone dots, old newspaper clippings, a solid color block per beat, and large cut-and-paste titles. At the end of July it added two more inputs: A-roll (you record yourself talking, and it keeps your face and gestures while turning everything around you into paper) and C-roll (give it a photo, and it cuts the person out as a sticker and places them in the collage). In Oct 5 it added a digital host mode, the last update.

All models run through the Atlas Cloud API, so one key covers everything; you don't need separate accounts for Google, Kling, or ElevenLabs. The README's first screen is a playable 30-second finished video, "The Evolution of Chinese Civilization," followed by a row of 60-second samples: football history, Mexican street food, the history of money, and a short history of Silicon Valley.

### Why it got the stars

**First, it was early by a few days.** In mid-July, AI-made "magazine collage" videos suddenly surfaced across X and YouTube. 7-17 A media report noted a surge of such videos on YouTube. Stav Zilber, one of the English-language sources, got about 100k views on X for his collage B-roll skill. 7-20 @wangray's long post noted that the gbro-collage-broll author's post had nearly 100k views and 792 bookmarks, and that a "知识猫图解" tutorial had 104k views in three days. The underlying cause was that image-to-video models such as Gemini Omni Flash had become cheap. vox-director was already built by 7-10, so when people started looking for an existing tool, it was already there, and one of the few that could output a complete video.

**Second, the author seeded channels.** Alisa Qian was then head of product marketing at Atlas Cloud. Between 7-11 and 7-13, over three days, she opened "Add Vox Director" PRs on more than a dozen lists, including awesome-claude-skills, awesome-claude-code, awesome-ai-tools, and awesome-ai-video-prompts, forking more than twenty awesome lists to do so. She also pitched open-source self-recommendations to GitHubDaily, HelloGitHub, and Ruan Yifeng's weekly newsletter. The results were modest: most PRs are still open today, and only one was merged in 9-18. What actually worked was the next move below.

**Third, it got a 'business card' for directory sites.** 7-11 One commit read "add package.json + llms.txt listing metadata for directory/GEO". As a result, more than a dozen skill directory sites (skillsllm, skillsdirectory, openagentskill, typingmind, etc.) auto-listed it, and searching "vox director" returns almost nothing but it. This explains why nothing has spiked since September, yet it keeps steadily gaining 10–25 stars a day: 9-07 to 11-06. It gained 896 stars in two months (trendshift) and never made the top 25 on the daily chart. Last 7 days: +126,11-05, single-day high +28.

**Fourth, Chinese KOLs and a second wave of updates.** Beyond the opening roundup, 9-27 @zhongying14 (Majiang AI Lab) recommended it again on its own, saying it had "already reached 2.1k". There were also Codex workflow tutorials and reposts on CSDN, such as "to make a Vox paper-collage video fastest, start with vox-director". 7-30 The author posted on X announcing the A-roll / C-roll update, and that week it got 83 forks, 38 of them in a single day, its highest week to date. There is no evidence that Serena's post was paid promotion.

Daily star gains in July can't be seen (GitHub no longer exposes star timestamps individually). Working back from the total, roughly 1,770 stars came in the first two months (estimate). The fork timeline is also densest at the end of July, followed by a long tail.

### What the builder gets out of it

The skill itself is free under MIT. But every video made calls a chain of models with an Atlas Cloud key, and every Atlas Cloud link in the README carries `utm_campaign=vox_director`. Atlas Cloud's official YouTube channel 7-21 also posted an intro video (580 views). So this is developer marketing for an API platform: stars are the KPI, and what they really want is people running it with a key. The author's current X bio has been changed to "Building @skyfable_ai for AIGC creators | ex @atlas_cloud_ai". The person has moved on, and the repo hasn't been touched since 10-05.

For anyone looking to follow this, one thing follows: **the only thing you can't get is a dedicated marketing lead's time and channel experience. Everything else (the models, the pipeline, the README sample videos, the checklist for seeding channels) is public and can be studied.**

### Who it's competing with

A batch that appeared in roughly the same week:

| Project | Launched | stars (around 11-06) | How it differs |
|---|---|---|---|
| pyang5166/gbro-collage-broll | 7-15 | 1,737,7 days +105 | Only makes 5–8 second B-roll clips, with three approval gates; one of the sources in the Chinese-language circle |
| Jane-xiaoer/paper-collage-ad-codex | 7-10 (about 10 hours earlier) | 426, growth has essentially stalled | Built for Codex, local voice cloning; no finished-video showcase and no English-language promotion |
| CK42BB/vox-explainer-skill | 7-11 | 155 | Nearly identical positioning, fewer features, nobody promoting it |
| Stav Zilber / MaxFusion collage skill (and the adapted VOX-COLLAGE-BROLL) | mid-July | Adapted version of 302 | English-language source, tied to the MaxFusion platform |
| Higgsfield's paper-collage tool | since July | Closed-source SaaS | Top AI video platform, credit-based, lots of YouTube tutorials |
| Vincentwei1021/anything2explainer, video-talkcraft | 9-08 / 8-22 | 3,088 / 2,118,7 days +232 / +171 | The broad explainer-video category, black-background motion graphics or Remotion, not paper collage; it came from behind |

There are also some that borrow the name directly (vox-director-codex, srt-vox-director), one that renamed a 2023-year-old repo and copied the description nearly word for word (321 stars), and people who listed forks of it as standalone skills on directory sites. The paper-collage lane is already crowded. @wangray said in July: "This wave of collage videos will be popular, and will also quickly become homogeneous."

The last line is the most important: what has grown fastest since September is not another paper collage, but an explainer-video skill that swapped in a different visual selling point.

### If it were you

**C: You can learn a very complete playbook here, but building another paper-collage skill isn't worth it.** The trend was July's, and the window has closed. There are dozens of similar projects, and the top three were all out about four months before you would be.

**Who it suits** : developers working on AI video or image generation who have their own agent workflows and can turn a newly emerging visual style into a "one sentence, full video" pipeline within a week or two. Ideally you have posting channels in both the Chinese and English circles.

**Who it doesn't suit** : anyone who wants to follow vox-director and build another paper-collage version now (there's no new angle, and the directory listings and search slots are already taken), or anyone who can only write prompts and can't chain multiple models into a pipeline that outputs an mp4 (the ones that borrowed the name only output storyboards, and all stalled at a hundred-odd stars).

**How to do it** : don't chase paper collage, chase the next visual style. Watch new AI-video styles on X and YouTube. When a style starts getting tutorials from people but no ready-made tools exist, open-source a skill that produces a complete finished video within a week. Follow its approach: put a directly playable finished video at the top of the README, with a row of sample videos on different topics beneath it; keep both a Chinese and an English version of the SKILL and README; use a single API key to call all the models (aggregator platforms like OpenRouter or fal work); leave two checkpoints where a human decides (confirm the storyboard, choose the style), and automate everything else. Or fill a gap it left: it stopped updating after 10-05, so you could build a version that is maintained actively and supports more models and vertical short-video platforms. But that depends on sustained updates to accumulate stars, and it won't come as fast as the first wave did.

**How to get users** : within 72 hours of launch, batch-submit PRs to awesome lists and self-nominate to GitHubDaily, HelloGitHub, and Ruan Yifeng's weekly newsletter. On day one, add `llms.txt` and `package.json` metadata so skill directory sites list it automatically. This was the main source of its stars over the following two months. Post videos you made with it on X yourself (pick topics everyone knows, like its Harry Potter one). Actively hand the repo to Chinese and English KOLs who do roundups. Tweet every major feature release: in the week of its A/C-roll update, forks multiplied several times over.

**When to move, before what** : there's no fixed date; it depends on when the next style surfaces. The test is the few days when "people are posting tutorials but no one has released a tool". If you wait until KOLs start posting "a few repos worth following" roundups, it's already too late.

**Signs you misjudged it** : ① vox-director or gbro-collage-broll's daily gains climb back above 50 before December, meaning paper collage hasn't peaked and the lane still has volume; ② the latecomers after September (like anything2explainer) also fall to single-digit daily gains within a month or two, like it did, meaning the whole explainer-video skill category is fading, which further weakens the play of chasing the next style; ③ platforms like Higgsfield compress the launch speed of new styles to under a week, leaving no time-gap window for an open-source skill to exploit.

## Why Alisa0808/vox-director took off

**In one sentence** : this is an agent skill (usable with Claude Code and Codex) that takes a one-line topic and outputs a Vox-style paper-collage explainer or ad short film (mp4). Image, video, voiceover, and music generation all go through a single API from Atlas Cloud, and the final footage is assembled locally with ffmpeg. The author, Alisa Qian, was then product marketing lead at Atlas Cloud.

**Bottom line** : It was the first open-source skill to ship in the mid-July 2026 "Vox paper-cutout video" wave, and the most complete one (7-10 built the repo), beating the next closest by 0–5 days. In its first three days, the author pitched it to 15+ awesome lists and Chinese recommendation channels. When Chinese AI-circle KOLs ran roundups of the trend around 7-19, they put it at #1. The stars mostly came from that wave of weeks; since then, skill directory sites, tutorials and SEO have kept adding 10–25 stars a day. Put simply, this was developer marketing for a model API platform: every video generated burns Atlas Cloud credits.

### 1. Data

| items | Numbers | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Repo created | 2026-07-10 15:32 UTC | GitHub API |
| Current stars / forks | 2,663 / 369(11-06) | GitHub API |
| past 7 days | +126 stars (10-30→11-06); 11-05 single-day +28 was the observed peak | our GitHub repo_day |
| 9-07 to 11-06 | +896 stars, ~15 a day on average, no spike; never made the Trendshift top 25 | trendshift.io/repositories/78937 |
| Before 9-07 (first 59 days) | about 1,770 stars (2,663 − 896) | Estimate |
| at 9-27 | "already 2.1k" | X @zhongying14 post |
| forks by week | week 7-06: 9, week 7-13: 21,7-20, week 23, **week 7-27: 83** (single day 7-30: 38), week 8-03: 32, then 10–30 a week | GitHub GraphQL pulled the creation time of all 369 forks |
| last push | 10-05 (host presenter mode) | GitHub |
| suspect flag | None; fork/star ratio 13.8%, normal and on the high side (suggests people are actually modifying it) | GitHub repo |

Note: GitHub no longer exposes stargazer details to this token (REST 404, GraphQL returns 0), so the daily star curve for July can't be reconstructed; the fork curve is used instead.

### 2. Competitors (same thing: "one sentence → Vox paper-collage video" agent skills / tools)

| Name | Where | Launched | Scale | Difference from vox-director |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| pyang5166/gbro-collage-broll (Gou Ge) | Open source | 2026-07-15 | 1,737 stars, +7 in 105 days | Only makes 5–8 second B-roll clips, three approval gates, Gemini Omni Flash first/last frame; one of the origins in the Chinese scene, author's post near 100k views (per @wangray's article) |
| Jane-xiaoer/paper-collage-ad-codex | Open source | 2026-07-10 (about 10 hours earlier than vox-director) | 426 stars, growth has essentially stopped | Targets Codex, clones voice with local IndexTTS-2; no showcase finished videos and no English promotion |
| CK42BB/vox-explainer-skill | Open source | 2026-07-11 | 155 stars | Almost identical positioning (one sentence → full video), fewer features, not promoted |
| Stav Zilber / MaxFusion's Collage B-roll skill (including MegaTroll222/VOX-COLLAGE-BROLL with 302 stars, holy-templar/vox-animated-ad-mcp with 77 stars) | X / open source + MaxFusion MCP | 2026-07, mid | Stav claims 100k views on X | Tied to the MaxFusion platform; the origin in the English scene; vox-director's README credits Stav |
| Higgsfield(Paper Collage MCP / AI Explainer Video Maker / Skills) | Big-company SaaS | From ¥2026-07 | Higgsfield is itself a leading AI video platform; there are many YouTube tutorials on "Claude + Higgsfield for Vox" | Closed source, paid, credit-based; vox-director is open source and uses list-price API costs |
| Vincentwei1021/anything2explainer, video-talkcraft | Open source | 2026-09-08 / 08-22 | 3,088 / 2,118 stars, 7 days +232 / +171 | Explainer-video category in general, black-background motion graphics or Remotion animation, not paper collage; later entrants have already passed its star count |
| Kapwing, videoai.me, calliopelabs, etc. | Web | From ¥2026-07 | Write SEO tutorials or sell prompt packs | Teach manual creation, or only provide prompts |
| geeklee/srt-vox-director, louchi1984-coder/voxeasy, kakaxi12/vox-director-codex | Open source | 2026-07-27 to 08-05 | 123 / 124 / 14 stars | Only outputs prompts or storyboards, no media generation; the name borrows vox-director directly |

**Bottom line** : Competitors are numerous, and they appeared almost in the same week (7-10 to 7-17). vox-director was not the only one, just a few days early and the most complete.

### 3. Growth tactics (evidence found)

2. **Author-driven distribution (confirmed)** : According to GitHub search results, over 7-11 to 7-13 in three days, the author opened "Add Vox Director" PRs to awesome-claude-skills / awesome-claude-code lists under ComposioHQ, travisvn, BehiSecc, hesreallyhim and others, plus more than a dozen lists such as awesome-ai-tools and awesome-ai-video-prompts. They also submitted "open-source self-recommendations" to GitHubDaily (#942), HelloGitHub, and Ruan Yifeng's weekly newsletter. The account also forked more than twenty awesome lists just to open PRs. Results were mediocre: most PRs are still open and unmerged, with only ai-for-developers/awesome-ai-coding-tools merging it on 9-18.

3. **Prepping for directory listings and GEO (confirmed)** : the commit for 7-11 reads "add package.json + llms.txt listing metadata for directory/GEO". So it's auto-indexed by a dozen-plus skill directories (skillsllm, typingmind, skillsdirectory, openagentskill, augmentclaude, magicnetworld, pomoai, ai-tldr, openagents.mom), and searching "vox director" turns up nothing else. That explains why there's been no breakout spike since September, just a steady gain of 10–25 stars a day.

4. **Chinese KOL roundups (confirmed)** : On 7-19, @369Serena (bio: "CGS Agency KOL Operations · Global KOL Resources") posted "Vox Style videos are going viral on X", and among the three repos she recommended, vox-director ranked first; the author replied "thanks for the recommendation". On 9-27, @zhongying14 (麻酱AI实验室) separately recommended it, "already 2.1k". There were also a Codex workflow tutorial from AI华哥 7-24, a CSDN post "to make a Vox paper-collage fastest, start with vox-director", reposts on 什么值得买, apito.ai, and others. There is no evidence whether Serena's post was paid promotion.

5. **Second wave: 7-30 update (confirmed)** : 7-29 added A-roll (talking head to collage) and C-roll (a single photo into a collage) modes, and 7-30 the author announced it on X. Forks that day reached 38, and 83 for the week, the peak of the entire period. On 8-03 a LINUX DO friend link was added, and on 8-11 it was removed, suggesting there was mutual promotion in the LINUX DO community.

6. **Company channel (confirmed)** : The official Atlas Cloud YouTube channel (9.58K subscribers) posted an intro video on 7-21, "Vox-style paper-collage SKILL | Open Source, One API Key", which got 580 plays, a small number. Every Atlas Cloud link in the README carries utm_campaign=vox_director.

7. **Reddit and third-party YouTube** : r/claudeskills and r/aigamedev have "I built a skill…" posts (Reddit blocked scraping, so the content and numbers are unverified); on YouTube, Alex Hitt (9-05,754 views) and AI每日推荐 (7-14,66 views) covered it, both small accounts.

8. **Showcase videos** : The first screen of the README embeds a playable 30-second finished video, with a row of 60-second samples below (football history, Mexican street food, currency history, Silicon Valley history). This kind of thing spreads by "see the result first"; playable samples are the best ad.

**Where the money comes back** : The skill itself is free under MIT. Each video run calls a chain of models such as nano-banana-2, gemini-omni-flash, kling, seedance, xai/tts, and minimax/music, all through one Atlas Cloud key. So this is a funnel that brings in new users and consumption for the API platform, and stars are the marketing KPI. The author's X bio now reads "Building @skyfable_ai for AIGC creators | ex @atlas_cloud_ai", meaning they have left Atlas Cloud, and the repo stopped updating after 10-05. Another repo on the same account, vibe-creating-skill (159 stars), uses the same playbook (a video prompt skill that generates through Atlas Cloud).

### 4. Why it took off

- **Timing** : It launched a few days before the wave took off, so by the time search and KOL roundups happened, it was already there and ranked first.

- **Completeness** : Many competitors in the same period only produced 5-second clips or only prompts; this one covers topic selection, beats, style choice, keyframes, motion, voiceover, music and subtitles end to end, outputs a complete mp4, and later added A-roll, C-roll, and host mode.

- **One key for everything** : No need to register separately for Google, Kling, ElevenLabs, or Suno; all models run through one Atlas Cloud key, which lowers the barrier. This is the natural advantage of an API aggregation platform.

- **Bilingual** : The README and SKILL both come in Chinese and English versions, reaching the Chinese KOL scene and English directory sites at once.

- **Professional growth playbook** : The author has a growth or product-marketing background, and within 72 hours of launch placed it on 15+ distribution points, plus added GEO metadata.

### 5. Differentiation

Compared with closed-source SaaS like Higgsfield: it's open source, runs in a local agent, and uses list-price API costs rather than credits. Compared with open-source peers like gbro-collage-broll and MaxFusion: it outputs full videos rather than clips, offers more modes (B, A, C, Host), has better-looking samples, and runs every model through one key.

Differentiation helped it take off, but it wasn't the main reason. The main reasons were launching a few days early and the author actively working the channels. Evidence: after September, later entrants like anything2explainer and video-talkcraft grew faster on more novel selling points, and have already matched or passed its star count. The project itself stopped updating after 10-05, so its moat is shallow. In @wangray's words: "This collage-video trend will catch on, and it will quickly become homogenized."

### 6. Visibility and copycats

- **Visibility: circulating within a small circle** . It's known in the Chinese AI creator scene (Chinese X, LINUX DO, CSDN) and on skill directory sites; there was no major media coverage, no English big account dedicated to it, and nothing on HN; and it earns no revenue itself since it's free.

- **Many copycats already** : Anil-matcha/vox-ai-motion-graphics-generator's description is nearly copied word for word (the repo dates to 2023, was made by renaming an old repo, 321 stars); kakaxi12/vox-director-codex and geeklee/srt-vox-director took the name directly; avabbbb's fork was listed as a standalone skill on skillsdirectory; and there is a large batch of other Vox or paper-collage skills (see the competitor table). The category is already crowded.

### 7. Takeaways

1. Ship a full reusable pipeline as open source before the visual trend peaks and gets big, so KOLs list it when it does.

2. Within 72 hours of launch, batch-submit to awesome lists, GitHubDaily, HelloGitHub, and Ruan Yifeng's weekly, then add llms.txt and package.json so directory sites index it automatically, earning long-tail SEO and GEO traffic.

3. Put a playable finished video right on the README's first screen. For generation skills, the sample reel is the conversion rate.

4. Platform companies can use "free skill + one key" to slot their own API into agent workflows, so stars and usage rise together.

5. Tweet every major feature release (A-roll, C-roll) to create another wave.

### 8. Uncertain

- July's daily star curve isn't available (the stargazer list isn't public), so we can only infer from the fork curve and third-party snapshots (9-27 around 2.1k).

- No real usage data, and Atlas Cloud's resulting spend is unknown; the cost per video is unverified (someone on X asked "what's the cost?").

- Whether recommendations from @369Serena and other KOLs were paid can't be confirmed.

- The Reddit post's author and engagement weren't captured.

- Unclear whether the repo will be maintained after the author leaves, or whether Atlas Cloud will take it over.
