# 220k people watched the tutorial, 225 people starred it: How WeChat whale girl whale_gril took off

**What it is** A one-click Windows installer. Once installed, it uses your logged-in WeChat account to let DeepSeek/Qwen play a blue-haired whale girl chatting in private messages and group chats.

**Why it blew up** It rode the DeepSeek whale-girl fan-creation wave of Oct 2026–November 8. The author serialized a "3-minute deployment" tutorial on Bilibili that brought beginners in. 11-04 moved the installer and auto-update to GitHub with 4.0, and stars climbed after that.

**C** **How you could follow it** Don't build another WeChat version. Go after what it doesn't cover and where users already are on GitHub: Whale-chan for Discord/Telegram or macOS, a platform-agnostic library of companion persona rules, or a version using official channels that avoids bans. Pair it with video and one update post per release, shipped before month-end.

C grade: the playbook (hot character + one-click installer for beginners + serialized tutorials + built-in Releases updates) is worth studying, but it shows this audience doesn't star repos. 220k views only produced 225 stars. The topic is a meme with a weekly window, and there's ban risk. Copying it won't net many stars. Circulating in small circles

165 stars · +7 in the last 128 days

A Bilibili UP host with only 1,183 followers built a Windows installer that lets DeepSeek play a "blue-haired whale girl" who chats with people in WeChat groups through your alt account. His tutorials total about 220k plays across 6 episodes, the GitHub repo has been up for 11 days, and the installer has been downloaded 2,500+ times, yet it has only 225 stars. This piece covers why it took off, why it has so few stars, and what people trying to earn stars with an open-source project can learn from it, and whether they should copy it.

### A video three days before the GitHub repo

In Oct 2026 23, the Bilibili account Banan1ce_up posted a video titled "Easiest on the whole internet? Deploy a whale girl on WeChat in 3 minutes!" As of 11-06, the video has 112k views, 2,945 favorites, and 609 comments (Bilibili, 11-06). The project wasn't on GitHub yet; the installer was hosted on Quark Cloud Drive.

Three days later, 10-26, the author signed up for GitHub and created Banan1cee/whale_gril. The account still has only this one repo. The CHANGELOG starts at 2.9.x, meaning it had already gone through many versions on the cloud drive before the first GitHub release.

So calling it a "project that took off on GitHub" isn't quite right. It took off on Bilibili, and GitHub was a repo it moved to later.

### What it is

A 168 MB Windows installer bundles Node, Python 3.12, and .NET 10. After installation, a launcher appears on the desktop. Users need two things: a logged-in WeChat account and a DeepSeek or Qwen API key. The account then speaks as "Jingjing" in private chats and groups. On the WeChat side it uses UI automation (simulating clicks on windows and reading the local database) and injects nothing into the WeChat process.

The real effort goes into making it "feel like a real person." A reply is split into 2–3 short bubbles, with no period or tilde at the end. If someone sends a "?", she replies "?". She understands abbreviations like xswl and kskbl. When insulted, she fires back, with comebacks in 9 tiers, and avoids sex, family, and discrimination. She goes silent when the topic dies, picks sticker memes, starts conversations on her own, and has memory.

Many CHANGELOG fixes came from real group chat feedback. The most telling one: "Someone in a group got her suddenly saying 'Are you tired today?' out of nowhere, which was super cringe. Logs show 158 instances of 'unprompted greetings,' including in group chats." After the fix, unprompted greetings default to only the owner's private chat.

### Why now

People don't want a "WeChat bot." They want "a whale girl to keep me company."

What brought this demand to ordinary people was someone else's video: "Bringing the big fat fish into the family group as a cyber granddaughter...", 520k views (uploader Youshi Shangzou Miao, 10-30). Viewers who finished it naturally searched "WeChat whale girl how to set up." Sorting results by views for that term, the author's videos took positions 3, 6, and 8 (Bilibili, 11-06). For the "WeChat, beginner, one-click" path, his tutorial got the most views.

### Where users come from

Almost all of it came from the author's own Bilibili serialized series:

| Date | Video | Views |
|---|---|---|
| 10-23 | Easiest on the whole internet? Deploy a whale girl on WeChat in 3 minutes! | 112,358 |
| 10-24 | Deploy the WeChat whale girl in 3 minutes: remake tutorial version | 50,059 |
| 10-25 | V3.41 update patch: the little whale can now reach out to you first | 17,555 |
| 10-26 | v3.50 update, and some thoughts on the project's future | 5,298 |
| 10-28 | v3.60 is here: the WeChat little whale now finds you and sends sticker memes? | 15,858 |
| 11-04 | 4.0 major update! Worried about config hassle? Worried about WeChat bans? Want her to send voice messages? | 21,306 |

Bilibili, 11-06.

A few tactics worth noting:

- **The titles are written for search.** "3 minutes," "easiest on the whole internet," "WeChat deployment" catch people who watched the "cyber granddaughter" video and want to try it themselves.

- **Every release gets a video.** In 11 days it shipped 14 versions and 355 commits (GitHub, 11-06). Update videos double as changelogs and pull old users back; the comment section doubles as the bug-report channel, and the 4.0 episode even pinned a QQ group for support.

- **The intro is written for beginners.** It's full of troubleshooting tips such as "Actively refused connection may be antivirus software" and "A wrong API key will show a deep-sea network robbery prompt." If you can't fix it, the author suggests "download DSH and let DSH fix it."

No media coverage, big-account reposts, or paid promotion turned up, and the awesome-whale-girl project list doesn't include it (11-05 versions).

### Why the stars are so few, and why they suddenly rose at 11-05

The numbers together tell the story (GitHub, 11-06):

| | Quantity |
|---|---|
| Total Bilibili tutorial views | About 220k |
| Total downloads across all versions | 10,949 |
| Of which 4.0 installer (exe) | 2,570 |
| Version list pulled by the launcher's "check for updates" | 4,136 (roughly useful as an install-base estimate; double-counted) |
| star | 225 |

The people installing it are Bilibili users. They aren't active on GitHub and don't know what starring means, so stars badly undercount real usage.

Star curve: 10-28 was 23,11-04, then 57, up only 34 in a week; 11-05 to 77,11-06 to 165, and by that afternoon 225. The turning point was 11-04's 4.0: the installer moved from Quark Cloud Drive to GitHub Releases, and the launcher got built-in auto-update that pulls the official installer from GitHub and verifies its SHA256. Large numbers of Bilibili users landed on a GitHub page for the first time, and the 4.0.1 version manifest was downloaded 3,636 times in two days. The star spike is probably from this move (inference).

At the same time, the same-theme QQ project whyever77/dafeiyu-astrbot gained 482 stars in two days. The whole "Whale-girl companion chat" category is heating up together, possibly with a shared external driver (WeChat Official Account posts or aggregator threads). I didn't find it.

### Who it's competing with

| Project | Scale | How it differs |
|---|---|---|
| linxisama/deepseekgirl | 78★, growth has stopped; video 95k views | 10-02 launched 3 weeks earlier; no one-click install, no sustained updates, and the author moved on to a QQ version |
| whyever77/dafeiyu-astrbot | 722★, +482 in two days | QQ version with more features (voice, image viewing), built on AstrBot + NapCat; you have to deploy the framework yourself |
| DSH WeChat plugins (dsh-im, dsh-wechat, etc.) | setup tutorial 83k views | Goes through Tencent's official iLink gateway, so no account-ban risk. But you must install DSH first, and it's positioned as a remote-control agent, not a companion persona |
| XXXzhouhan/dafeiyu-wechat-ai | 12★ | Same theme, but no installer and no videos; didn't take off |
| Older frameworks like CowAgent (formerly chatgpt-on-wechat) | 7k–48k★ | General-purpose WeChat bot framework aimed at developers; no persona |

GitHub, 11-06.

"WeChat AI bot" has been a red ocean for nearly a decade; "Whale-girl companion chat" is a two-month-old thing. whale_gril sits at the intersection of both, plus "one-click install for Windows beginners." deepseekgirl, which launched 3 weeks earlier, stalled at 78 stars. whale_gril got past that with one-click install, ongoing updates, and a connected Bilibili tutorial series. But the demand came from the hype, and these differentiators only explain half of it.

### Risks

- **Account bans.** UI automation runs on a secondary account, and once Tencent cracks down, that path is gone. The author's own video title for 4.0 says "Worried about WeChat bans?"

- **Hype fades.** Whale-girl is a fan-made meme, less than three months old since August. Once the meme cools, new users dry up.

- **No money.** MIT license, free, no paid tier, no sponsorship. The installer is distributed via Quark Cloud Drive; whether they're collecting referral commissions from the drive is unverified.

### If it were you

**C** . This playbook is worth studying, but building another one like it won't get you many stars.

The takeaway: whale_gril itself shows that 220k people watched the tutorial and only 225 starred the repo. Its users are on Bilibili, not GitHub. If you want stars, don't chase WeChat beginners.

**Who it's for** : developers already on Bilibili or Douyin who can make tutorial videos and want followers and the credential of "I built something thousands of people use." Stars are a side benefit. Also people who want to bring the same character into the ecosystem where GitHub users gather.

**Who it's not for** : anyone who only wants stars; anyone without a video channel who expects GitHub to grow the repo on its own (the no-video same-theme repo stalled at 12 stars); anyone unwilling to take on the ban risk.

**How to do it** : don't build "another WeChat whale-girl." That spot is taken and still growing. What's worth building is the part it doesn't cover, where users are already on GitHub:

- Switch platforms: Whale-chan on Discord / Telegram (English memes already exist on Reddit), or a macOS version. The users are developers and overseas players, and they star repos.

- Build a base layer: extract the most valuable parts (how to split bubbles, when to stay quiet, boundaries for clapping back, how to pick stickers) into a platform-agnostic "companion persona rule library" that QQ, Discord, and the DSH plugin can all use. Framework builders star frameworks.

- Take the compliant route: connect through Tencent's official iLink. No bans, and it fixes whale_gril's biggest weakness.

**Customer acquisition** : copy its playbook, just reversed in direction. For the English version, post demo videos and GIFs on r/DeepSeek, and put a real group-chat screenshot on the first screen of the README. For the rule library, submit PRs and promote it within the AstrBot and DSH plugin ecosystems. Post an update thread with every release. Put installers and auto-update on GitHub Releases; this step funnels traffic to the repo page, which whale_gril already demonstrated in 11-05.

**Timing** : before late November. It's a meme, so the window is measured in weeks, not months.

**Signs you've misread this** : ① whale_gril passed 2,000 stars before late November, meaning Bilibili traffic can convert to stars in bulk and the WeChat-beginner path is worth fighting for; ② new Bilibili "WeChat whale-girl" videos fall to a few thousand views around mid-November, meaning the hype is over and anything built now is too late; ③ Tencent starts mass-banning this kind of automated secondary account, or the official iLink adds group companion-chat capability, in which case the UI-automation path closes and only the compliant route remains.

Where users come from

- **Verified** **Author's own Bilibili tutorial series** : Banan1ce_up, 6 episodes. 10-23 Episode 1 has 112k views and 2,945 favorites; the remake has 50k, the 4.0 version 21k. The description links to Quark Drive and GitHub, plus a QQ group 1026650094

- **Verified** **Bilibili search and recommendations driven by the DeepSeek whale-girl IP hype** : searching "WeChat whale-girl" sorted by views, the author's videos rank #3, #6, #8. Ahead of them is a 520k-view video titled "Bringing the big fat fish into the family group as a cyber granddaughter." 36, Phoenix Tech, and Geek Park have all covered this wave.

- Inference **GitHub Releases installer + built-in auto-update** : the 4.0.1 installer got 2,223 downloads and the update manifest 3,636 fetches. Stars rose +20 on 11-05 and +88 on 11-06, and the timing lines up with the 4.0 release.

- Inference **Quark Cloud Drive distribution (possible referral commissions)** : every video description links to a Quark link. Whether they participate in referral commissions is unverified.

## Why whale_gril (Banan1cee/whale_gril) took off

> Research date 2026-11-06. Channel: GitHub. Data sources: GitHub API (live), our github repo_day table, Bilibili public endpoints (queried via a Shanghai exit), Jina search.

### One line

It's a one-click Windows installer: using a WeChat secondary account you're logged into, it has DeepSeek/Qwen play a "blue-haired whale-girl" who chats with people in private messages and group chats. It took off because it caught the "DeepSeek whale-girl / blue big fat fish" fan-made wave from 2026 8 to November. The author posted a "3-minute deployment" tutorial on Bilibili (6 episodes, roughly 220k views combined) and rode that wave. GitHub stars are only the small share of Bilibili traffic that spilled over. The star spikes on 11-05 and 11-06 match the 4.0 release, which moved installers and auto-updates to GitHub Releases.

### 1. Data

| Metric | Value | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Repo created | 2026-10-26 (the author's GitHub account was registered the same day; this is their only repo) | GitHub API |
| Star | 10-28 23 → 11-04 57 → 11-05 77 → 11-06 165 (repo snapshots); live count that afternoon 225 | github repo_day table; GitHub API |
| Fork | 9 | GitHub API |
| Commits | 11 days, 355 commits, 3 contributors (Banan1cee 129, Muzi0336 115, xmuzhou 107) | GitHub API |
| Version | 11 days, 14 releases (v3.50 → 4.0.5). CHANGELOG starts at 2.9.x, so there were many iterations before GitHub was opened. | GitHub API, CHANGELOG.md |
| Release downloads | 10,949 total. About 3 zip downloads for 3,900.x; 4.0.1 and 4.0.5 installer exes 2,570 times; `release-manifest.json` 4,136 times (the launcher's "check for updates" fetches it, so it roughly reflects installed base, though it counts repeats) | GitHub API releases |

**Downloads far outpace stars** : the installer alone was downloaded 2,500+ times, while the repo has only 225 stars. Most users are Bilibili users who aren't active on GitHub, so stars badly undercount real usage.

### 2. Where users come from (growth tactics)

#### 2.1 The author's own Bilibili tutorial series (main channel, verified)

Bilibili account **Banan1ce_up** (mid 478020119, 1,183 followers) posted a compilation. Data from the Bilibili view API, checked 2026-11-06:

| Date | Title | Views | Saves | Reviews |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 10-23 | Easiest on the whole internet? Deploy a whale girl on WeChat in 3 minutes! | 112,358 | 2,945 | 609 |
| 10-24 | Deploy the WeChat whale girl in 3 minutes: remake tutorial version | 50,059 | 1,292 | 502 |
| 10-25 | V3.41 update patch: the little whale can now reach out to you first | 17,555 | 452 | 237 |
| 10-26 | v3.50 update, and some thoughts on the project's future | 5,298 | 78 | 81 |
| 10-28 | v3.60 is here: the WeChat little whale now finds you and sends sticker memes? | 15,858 | 524 | 280 |
| 11-04 | 4.0 major update! Worried about config hassle? Worried about WeChat bans? Want her to send voice messages? | 21,306 | 1,825 | 479 |

- The first video (10-23) came 3 days before the GitHub repo. Early distribution ran through **Quark Drive** links. From 10-24 on, the description carried both a Quark link and the GitHub address; the 4.0 episode also pinned a QQ group (1026650094) for after-sales support.

- The descriptions are packed with troubleshooting tips ("actively refused connection may be antivirus software", "a wrong API key triggers a 'deep sea network robbery' prompt"), which shows the audience is beginners. The author even suggests "if you can't fix it, download DSH (DeepSeek Harness) and let DSH fix it."

- Every version release comes with an update video. Bilibili serves as both **changelog + win-back channel** for older users.

#### 2.2 The Bilibili search term "微信 鲸鱼娘" (WeChat Whale Girl)

Searching "微信 鲸鱼娘" sorted by plays: the author's videos rank #3, #6, and #8. Ranked #1 and #2 are "Dragging the big fat fish into the family group chat as a cyber granddaughter..." (by 友柿上奏喵, 520k plays, 10-30) and a re-upload with 160k plays. Viral videos like these made "keeping a whale girl in WeChat" something mainstream users want, and among tutorials on the "WeChat, beginner-friendly, one-click" route, this author's has the most plays. Bilibili data, checked 11-06.

#### 2.3 Why 11-05 and 11-06 stars surged (inference)

- Version 4.0 (11-04 video, 11-04 release) switched distribution from a cloud-drive zip to **a setup.exe on GitHub Releases, plus a built-in launcher auto-updater** (updates download the official installer from GitHub and verify its SHA256). A lot of Bilibili users landed on a GitHub page for the first time: 4.0.1's manifest got pulled 3,636 times in two days.

- Over the same two days, similar QQ-route projects whyever77/dafeiyu-astrbot also rose by +255 and +227 (repo_day). This suggests the whole "whale girl companion bot" category was heating up at once, perhaps with a shared external source (an official account or an aggregator post), but **none was found** .

- Not found on X (x-radar corpus), HN, or Reddit; rednote and Douyin were not checked.

#### 2.4 Macro backdrop: the DeepSeek whale girl craze (timing, verified)

- 2026-08-13 DeepSeek open-sourced DeepSeek Harness (DSH). The community then turned the "blue big fat fish / whale girl" into an IP: desktop pets, skins, memes, and Bilibili comment-section bots. See 36 氪's "A 'whale girl' grew out of DeepSeek", Phoenix Tech/APPSO's "The DeepSeek big fat fish took over Bilibili comments" (10-23), Geek Park's "How DeepSeek became a 'big fish'" (about 10-31), and the Reddit r/DeepSeek thread "Whale-chan memes are blowing up".

- Related GitHub repos already have thousands of stars: MeteorNOX/DeepSeek-Balance-Whale-Widget 6,911, MerZlin/dsh-pet-indesktop 3,108, Small-tailqwq/dsh-deep-whale 3,046, TreapGoGo/deepseek-whale-girl 744 (GitHub repos).

- In short, users want "the whale girl keeps me company," not a "WeChat bot." The repo packs that IP's emotional demand into WeChat, the app people use every day.

#### Acquisition channels not found

No paid acquisition, press coverage, or big-account reposts were seen. The awesome-whale-girl list doesn't include it (it's absent from the 11-05 update; the QQ-route dafeiyu-astrbot is listed). The project is free, MIT-licensed, with no paid tier, sponsorship, or membership. Quark Drive has a new-user referral commission; whether the author chose Quark to earn it is **unverified** .

### 3. Competitors

| Name | Where | Launched | Scale | How it differs |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| linxisama/deepseekgirl (Bilibili "Saionji Murasaki is not a loser") | Open source + Bilibili | 2026-10-02 | 78★, growth has stalled; video 95k plays; the author has moved on to the QQ version | The earliest "whale girl in WeChat/QQ groups"; uses UIA as well, but has no one-click installer and no sustained iteration |
| whyever77/dafeiyu-astrbot | Open source (QQ) | 2026-10-14 | 722★, 11-05, 11-06: +482 in two days | Takes the QQ route (AstrBot + NapCat), a compliant path with more features (voice, image viewing); but you must deploy the framework yourself, and it's not on WeChat |
| DSH WeChat plugins (xmanrui/dsh-im, pan17/dsh-wechat, WeChatAgent, etc.) | Open-source DSH plugins | 2026-10 | Tutorial "Full guide to connecting DeepSeek Harness to WeChat", 83k plays | Uses Tencent's iLink gateway, which is more compliant; but you must install DSH first, and it's positioned as agent remote control, not a companion persona |
| XXXzhouhan/dafeiyu-wechat-ai | Open source | 2026-10-21 | 12★ | Same theme (big fat fish AI in WeChat groups), didn't gain traction |
| zhayujie/CowAgent (formerly chatgpt-on-wechat) | Open source | 2022-08 | 47,817★ | A long-established general-purpose WeChat AI bot framework; no persona or emotion, configuration aimed at developers |
| wangrongding/wechat-bot, cluic/wxauto, WeChatFerry, LangBot, AstrBot | Open source | 2021–2024 | 7k–46k★ | All are infrastructure or frameworks; wxauto is the ancestor of this kind of UIA approach |
| Tencent's official "WeChat ClawBot / iLink" | Big-company features | 2026 | Not verified | Official channel, no account bans, but can't be inserted into ordinary group chats for companionship |

Verdict: "WeChat AI bots" is a decade-old red ocean; "whale girl companion" is a two-month-old new category. whale_gril sits at the intersection of the two, plus **one-click installation for Windows beginners** .

### 4. Differentiation

1. **Works out of the box** : a 168 MB installer that bundles Node, Python 3.12, and .NET 10. Users only need a logged-in WeChat alt account and an API key. Framework-style competitors (AstrBot, CoW, DSH plugins) require command-line skills or a host installed first.

2. **Persona and polish to feel "like a real person"** : replies are split into 2–3 short bubbles, with no periods or tildes; it picks up slang and abbreviations; when insulted it fires back (9-tier line library, sex, family, and discrimination are off-limits); it doesn't repeat itself; it goes quiet when the topic dies; it sends memes that match the mood; it starts conversations on its own; it has memory. The CHANGELOG has many fixes labeled "based on real group chat feedback" (e.g., "someone suddenly asked 'are you tired today' in the group, very cringe").

3. **Fast iteration, feedback loop via Bilibili** : 11 versions in 14 days, 355 commits; every major release has a video, and the comments serve as the bug-report channel.

4. **Engineering reassurance** : update verification via SHA256, rollback, exportable memory, one-click stop. This is the "your wife won't disappear" guarantee for beginners.

**Did differentiation drive it? Partly.** The demand comes from the whale girl IP (timing); among same-theme WeChat versions it won (the deepseekgirl that came 3 weeks earlier stalled at 78★), thanks to "one-click install + continuous updates + a continuous Bilibili tutorial series."

### 5. Visibility and copycats

- **Visibility: spreading in small circles.** Bilibili has about 220k plays, but no media, big X accounts, or awesome lists have mentioned it; no revenue is public.

- **Copycats:** Many projects on the same theme already exist (dafeiyu-wechat-ai, the "DSH connects WeChat" series from 聪明哦鲸鲸, various DSH WeChat plugins), but it's hard to say they copied it; it looks more like parallel work within the same wave. No direct copy has been seen yet.

### 6. Takeaways

- **The combo: IP craze + one-click beginner package + serialized Bilibili tutorials** : first use titles like "deployed in 3 minutes" to win search and recommendation traffic, then repeatedly win users back with version-update videos.

- Binaries on GitHub Releases plus a built-in updater convert video traffic into GitHub stars and measurable install counts (manifest downloads).

- The real moat for a companion product is the rules for "feeling human" (bubble splitting, knowing when to stay quiet, the limits of clapping back), not the model.

### 7. Risks and uncertainties

- Automating WeChat via UIA carries account-ban risk (the author mentions it in the title of a 4.0 video). If Tencent steps in, the category could go quiet overnight; the craze itself may also fade.

- Not monetized; whether the Quark distribution earns referral commissions is unverified.
