One line, 1.4M views, and 300 stars: BoardUI and "Stop your UI smelling like AI"
What it is A React component library for AI agent products. The free part lives on GitHub, and the full version is sold on the website.
Why it took off In Nov 1 the author posted "stop ai slop in your UI", which hit people's frustration that AI-built interfaces all look the same. 1.4M views sent people to the site, and some clicked star on GitHub on the way. The code hasn't been updated in a month; this wave was all distribution.
BHow you could approach it Don't build yet another AI chat component library for React. Go to Vue, Svelte or SwiftUI, where there aren't any solid agent UI components yet. Build a set with its own style, fully free, with MCP built in, and pitch it with one line that names the pain point and sends people straight to the repo.

An Amsterdam designer, Nov 1, posted six words and a link on X, with no image and no video. Within four days his React component library had gained over three hundred stars on GitHub. Anyone building open source should read this twice: once to see why that sentence spread, and once to see why 1.4M views ended up as only a few hundred stars.
One tweet with no image
On the afternoon of Nov 1, 2026 (UTC 15:33), Mertcan Esmergul (on X as @sitenley, LinkedIn says he was a designer at xAI) posted:
stop ai slop in your UI boardui.com
As of 11-06, it shows 1.4M views, 5.5K likes and 19k bookmarks. The next day he posted a recap, in his words: "never seen anything like this... no launch video or image, just a few words with the link". In 28 hours 113k unique visitors reached the BoardUI site, with over 250k page views and 105k link clicks; 82% opened it on mobile. Most visitors were in North America, followed by his home country, Turkey. The most-viewed page was multi-agent UI, with 20k people. When he posted, he had only about 3,500 followers. He didn't disclose revenue: "I'll keep the revenue stat to myself."
The next day, Griffin Wooldridge, a US product designer (34k YouTube subscribers), posted a short video with the classic hook "comment board and I'll DM you the link." The pitch: "103 React components that plug into Claude Code and Cursor via MCP." It got 57k views and 204 comments on Facebook, but only 677 views on TikTok. Whether he was paid or took a cut is unverified.
What happened on GitHub
The BoardUI/boardui repo was created in Sep 1. It grew slowly at first, around two or three stars a day:
| Date | star | Added that day |
|---|---|---|
| 10-16 | 628 | — |
| 11-02 | 685 | +3 |
| 11-03 | 849 | +164 |
| 11-04 | 936 | +87 |
| 11-05 | 971 | +35 |
| 11-06 | 1,009 | +38 |
(GitHub, daily star count)
It gained 7 stars in the last 334 days, versus 7 in the 32 days before. The npm package boardui normally gets 50–150,11-02 downloads a day, rising to 834 (npmjs download stats). Forks went from 63 to 88, which is high for a component library. My guess is it's tied to the first button in the README, "Deploy with Vercel": enter a model key and you get a working AI chat app.
Note that the last code push was in Oct 2. This wave has nothing to do with a new release, it's all distribution. 11-02 It was also launched once on Product Hunt, getting 3 votes and placing #49 that day. Nobody posted it on Hacker News.
What it actually is
BoardUI is a paid React design system. It's designed in Figma first, then turned into React Aria + Tailwind v4 components, and you use it by copying the source into your project. The site lists 103 components (including 19 chart types), 10 templates, and 400+ design tokens. Pro is a one-time purchase, not a subscription, with a "€49 launch discount" banner. The actual price isn't stated directly on the pricing page.
The GitHub repo ships the free tier: 69 components under the MIT license, with the homepage being a chat app. It also includes an MCP server (npx boardui mcp), AGENTS.md, llms.txt, and Cursor rules. One line in the README, claude mcp add boardui, lets Claude Code use it.
In other words, the GitHub repo is one layer of the funnel: earn trust and trial first, then sell Pro on the website.
Why the line went viral
It names a common frustration. Over the past 2026 year, people building frontends with Claude Code and Cursor have ended up with interfaces that all look alike, which the English-speaking community calls "AI slop." "stop ai slop in your UI" states both the pain and the fix in one line. It got 19k bookmarks and 5.5K likes. Bookmarks are more than three times the likes, which means people saved it to use later, not just tapped a quick like.
The landing page backs up the claim. The homepage is itself a polished agent interface: several agents side by side, a thinking state, an input box, a token usage card, and it looks good on mobile too. If the click-through had been a default shadcn look, the slogan would have been a joke.
It repositioned in time. In a July web archive, the site title was still "A design system for dashboards." From 9 to October it changed to "React design system for agentic interfaces," adding components like composer, agent log, agent limits, and web search. Dashboard kits are everywhere, but "a design system for agent products" was still rare at the time.
It's friendly to AI coding tools. With MCP, AGENTS.md, and llms.txt, it got listed in a batch of skill directories and picked up by creator content on "giving Claude Code design skills." The core argument of Griffin's video was that "installing a component library beats installing a design skill."
Why 1.4M views only brought in a few hundred stars
113k people visited the site, and the GitHub repo gained about 320 stars over four days, roughly one star for every 300 visitors. The reason isn't complicated: the tweet linked to the website, not GitHub; the website's goal is selling Pro, with GitHub as just one entry point; and 82% of visitors were on mobile, where few people bother to star a repo.
For anyone chasing stars, this is the lesson: with the same traffic, if the landing page were the GitHub repo and everything were free, stars would likely be much higher (my inference). BoardUI is optimizing for revenue, not stars, so its setup makes sense. If your goal is different, your funnel should be built differently.
Who it's competing with
| Project | Scale | How it differs from BoardUI |
|---|---|---|
| shadcn/ui | 127k stars | The de facto standard, general-purpose and style-neutral |
| CopilotKit | 38k stars | An agent frontend runtime, not a design system |
| Tremor | 16k stars | Dashboard charts only, since acquired by Vercel |
| assistant-ui | 13k stars | A chat runtime and state management library, installed as an npm dependency |
| prompt-kit | 3.1K star | Free AI chat components built on shadcn |
| Vercel AI Elements | 2.5K star | Vercel's AI chat components, covering only the chat part |
| Untitled UI React | 2K star | Also Figma-first + React Aria + paid Pro, but doesn't focus on agents |
| dashboardcn | 19 star | Repo created in September, with a comparison page explicitly titled "a free alternative to BoardUI" |
(GitHub stars, early November)
The React ecosystem's "AI chat components" space is already crowded, and most are built on shadcn, so they look much the same. BoardUI's only real difference is a visual language polished by a designer. Technically (copying source, Tailwind, MCP) anyone can match it. dashboardcn posted a comparison page just days after its repo went up, and someone (agents-kit, 131 stars) is already using its MIT components as a foundation.
If it were you
The takeaway: the topic "an agent-product component library that doesn't look AI-generated" still has room, but that room lies outside React, and it requires real design talent. If you can only write code and wrap shadcn, you won't get stars.
Who it suits: frontend developers or designers with their own taste who can build a visual style recognizable at a glance; or people who notice that agent interface components in ecosystems like Vue, Svelte, SwiftUI, Flutter, and React Native still lack a solid option.
Who it doesn't suit: people who want to build yet another "AI chat component library" in React + Tailwind. That space already has a dozen-plus projects, most stuck at a few hundred stars. It also doesn't suit people without their own aesthetic who can only rely on default styles, because this topic's entire selling point is "it doesn't look bad."
How to do it:
- Pick one ecosystem and one type of interface, for example "agent interface components for Vue / Svelte" (side-by-side agents, tool call logs, thinking states, token usage, approval dialogs), or "AI chat UI for SwiftUI." BoardUI has shown people want these, but it only does React.
- The homepage is the demo: put a live demo that opens directly on the first screen of the README, and make it look good on mobile too. Ideally, like BoardUI, it runs as soon as you enter a model key, with a one-click deploy button.
- Make everything free and let the landing page be GitHub: don't send people to a website first and then route them back.
- Include MCP, AGENTS.md, and llms.txt from day one, so Claude Code / Cursor users can install it directly, which gets you listed in skill directories.
How to get users: copy that tweet's approach: one line that voices a widespread frustration, plus a link straight to the repo, with a 10–15 second screen recording to show the result. Then find creators covering "design / AI coding tools." BoardUI's "comment a keyword and I'll DM the link" video got 57k views on Facebook. Product Hunt and Hacker News don't help much for this kind of thing (BoardUI got only 3 votes on PH).
How long the window lasts: "AI slop" is a hot term right now, and the official component sets for AI coding tools are filling out fast (Vercel already has AI Elements). The window is probably the next few months. Once shadcn or the major frameworks ship solid agent components, the switch-ecosystem route will get crowded too (estimate).
Signs you've misread it: your repo has been live a month, you've tried the tweets and creators, and it's still at two or three hundred stars; or the ecosystem you picked already has an agent interface component from a major vendor. Also watch one signal: BoardUI's own daily gains have dropped from 164 to 38, and its code hasn't been updated in a month. If it quickly returns to two or three a day, the spike was a one-off viral post, not lasting demand for the topic itself.

BoardUI/boardui: why it took off

One line
BoardUI is a paid React design system by Mertcan Esmergul, a designer in Amsterdam (X @sitenley; LinkedIn lists past work as a designer at xAI). It's Figma-first, built with React Aria + Tailwind v4, and you copy the source into your project. The GitHub repo holds the free MIT part, used to funnel people to Pro. The homepage is an AI chat app you run by entering your own model key. The Nov 3 star jump didn't come from GitHub itself. It came from the founder posting a single-line tweet on Nov 1, "stop ai slop in your UI boardui.com," which unexpectedly went viral (1.4M views, 19k bookmarks). Around the same time, a design creator posted a short video offering "comment board and I'll send you the link." The code hasn't been pushed since Oct 2, so this growth is entirely from distribution and has nothing to do with a new release.

| Distribution aimed at agents | It has an MCP server (npx boardui mcp), AGENTS.md, llms.txt, and Cursor rules; the README gives a one-line claude mcp add boardui command. This lets it get listed in skill directories and picked up by content like "install design skills for Claude Code" | Yes (how much traffic it brought is unclear) |
| One-click deploy to Vercel | The first button in the README is Deploy with Vercel. You only need to fill in one AI_API_KEY and the deployment is a working chat app. The fork count (89) is high relative to stars, which fits this button. | Inferred |
Takeaway: growth = a designer's personal X account + a slogan that hits a pain point ("AI slop UI") + a website that is visually appealing on mobile and easy to open. The open-source library is only one layer of the funnel that catches people; the rough conversion from website visitors to GitHub stars is 113K visitors → a few hundred stars.

4. Why it took off
- Timing and narrative: in 2026 many people commonly used Claude Code / Cursor to write front ends, and interfaces all looked alike ("AI slop"). The line "stop ai slop in your UI" hit that widespread anxiety. Even without a video it got 1.4M views and 19k bookmarks, far more bookmarks than likes (19K vs 5.5K), which suggests people saved it to use later rather than liking it casually.
- The product is the demo: the homepage is itself an agent interface with polished motion (multiple agents, thinking states, composer, token usage card), 82% of visitors open it on mobile, and one click shows what it is. The most-clicked page is the multi-agent UI page (20k people).
- Changed the pitch from "dashboard kit" to "agentic interface design system": the July Wayback archive still had the homepage titled "A design system for dashboards"; from 9~October it changed to "React design system for agentic interfaces", adding components like composer, agent log, agent limits, and web search to match what agent products need.
- Open-source free tier + paid Pro funnel: all 69 free-tier components are MIT on GitHub; Pro (103 components, 19 charts, 10 templates) is a one-time purchase with no subscription, and the site advertises a €49 launch discount. GitHub stars and npm build trust and catch the traffic.
- Agent-ready: it has MCP, AGENTS.md, and llms.txt, so Claude Code can call it directly, and it gets picked up by all kinds of skill directories and creator content about "design skills for Claude" (the core argument of Griffin's video is that "a component library is more reliable than a skill").
5. Differentiation
- Compared with the shadcn family (AI Elements, prompt-kit, dashboardcn): BoardUI has its own complete visual language (Figma first, 400+ semantic tokens, motion details), builds on React Aria instead of Radix, offers both agent components and dashboard components in one system, and supports RTL and Japanese localization.
- Compared with paid kits like Untitled UI: BoardUI focuses on agent interfaces, and it has built-in MCP so coding agents can install it themselves.
- Is this differentiation why it took off? Partly. What really ignited it was the founder's design taste, plus a slogan that named the pain point and one viral post. The slogan works because what visitors click on really doesn't look AI-generated, and that comes from having a defined design language. Technically (copying source, Tailwind, MCP) there's no real moat; dashboardcn published a "free alternative" comparison page the day after it launched.
6. How many people have seen it
- Revenue is not public (the founder's words: "I'll keep the revenue stat to myself"); nothing found on TrustMRR.
- It is widely seen on design and front-end X (1.4M views) and has been pushed by design creators; no media coverage, nothing on HN, no traction on PH; our x-radar corpus has no hits.
- Copycats: dashboardcn (September, explicitly positioned against it, free-first); agents-kit uses it as its base.
- Assessment: it's being talked about in small circles, and it has already had one wave.
7. Takeaways
- The design-kit playbook: a free MIT tier on GitHub to earn trust and stars, a one-time paid Pro, and a homepage built as the best-looking demo.
- Anchor the slogan to a widespread anxiety ("AI slop"); one sentence plus a link is enough, no video needed.
- Ship MCP / AGENTS.md / llms.txt with the component library to ride the "install design skills in Claude Code" content and directory traffic.
- Work with "comment a keyword and we DM you" style design creators to distribute on Facebook / Instagram Reels.
8. Still unclear
- Pro's actual price (the page is JS-rendered and only "€49 launch discount" was captured) and actual revenue.
- Whether Griffin's video was paid promotion, an affiliate split, or an organic recommendation.
- How many GitHub stars came from X traffic versus creator videos (the timing overlaps).
- Whether it can last beyond the viral post: no code updates for 10-02 after, and daily star gains have dropped from 164 to 38.
