A junior high student who reportedly has no computer wrote a cloud drive downloader with 6,500 stars on a phone

What it is An open-source Android app: paste share links from 10 cloud drives, including Quark, UC, and Baidu, and download directly to your phone with multi-threading, without saving to your own drive first. It can also parse videos from Douyin, Xiaohongshu, and Bilibili.

Why it took off Downloading files other people shared on cloud drives to a phone has been a constant need, but the good tools were all on PC. It hit the pre-semester download peak and was repeatedly picked as a topic by dozens of Bilibili resource-sharing accounts.

BHow you could follow Don't build another Android cloud drive parser. Instead, fill the gaps it hasn't covered (iOS, TV boxes), or apply the "tools exist on PC, phone is empty" playbook to a category with lower gray-area risk. Stay free and open source, ally with the original author, and let Bilibili and linux.do spread it.

Grade B: followers did get stars (a PC port got over 3,000 stars in two months; wenxi, 6 weeks later, got 1,300 stars), but the Android slot is taken, growth is slowing, and the whole category carries account-ban and PanDownload-style legal risk. Whispers in niche circles

YunX is an open-source Android app: paste a cloud drive share link someone sent you, and it resolves the direct link and downloads it to your phone with multi-threading. The repo was created in Aug 6, reached over 6,500 stars in three months, and its installation package in Releases has been downloaded about 260K times, with zero promotion spend. Its stars didn't come from programmer circles. They came from Bilibili "resource-sharing accounts" pushing it video after video. Below: which slot it fills, where the traffic came from, how many stars followers got, and whether this path still works.

A Bilibili video from Aug 17

In Aug 17, 2026, Bilibili UP主 "林灵玲の科技小屋" posted a video (BV1sRbY61Eaj) recommending an Android app for "unthrottled cloud drive downloads." A Smzdm article from Aug 23 recorded its performance: 5 days, 15K views, 1,682 favorites; by Nov 6, the video had 51K views and 4,140 favorites.

The video claims it is "open source, no ads, no marketing or promotion," but the download link it gives is not GitHub; it's a UC cloud drive link. The title says "supports 512 multi-threading," while the project README lists the concurrency cap as 32 (an early version allowed up to 512; v1.2.5 rolled it back, and the author's changelog gives the reason as reducing platform risk-control exposure).

This video promoted YunX. Smzdm's original text: starting in Aug 15, Bilibili "suddenly had dozens of related videos at once"; at that time the project was 16 days old, had 700 stars, and its installer had been downloaded over 36K times. The pre-semester period was a download peak: online courses, exam prep materials, and multi-GB software packages were all sitting in cloud drives, and "real demand met a real tool."

The GitHub account behind the tool is CYQawa, registered in January 2025, with 8 public repositories, and this is the only one that's notable. A Zhihu article introducing it was titled "An open-source cloud drive downloader, and the author is actually a junior high student," which says the author "claims to have no computer and can't build a PC version"; the README also notes the project was developed and debugged in AndroidIDE (a mobile development environment). The junior high student identity is second-hand and unverified.

What problem it actually solves

The normal flow for downloading a file someone shared on a cloud drive: open the link in a browser → save it to your own drive → install that drive's client → put up with throttled speeds or buy a membership. Quark has become the main drive for short dramas, online courses, and resource sharing over the past two years, and on a phone one person often has to install three or four clients.

YunX compresses this into one step: paste the whole share link (it parses the extraction code itself), it lists the files, and one tap starts chunked, multi-connection downloading that keeps going with the screen locked and resumes after interruptions. For drives that require saving first (Baidu, Xunlei, Quark, etc.), it temporarily saves to your own account in the background, retrieves the direct link, then deletes the copy, so you do nothing manually; Quark and UC shares can be fetched without logging in. The interface is native Kotlin + Compose, with no sign-up, no in-app purchases, and no ads.

It now supports 10 cloud drives (Quark, UC, Xunlei, Baidu, 123, 139, 115, Guangya, Lanzou, and Lanzou Premium), and later added video and image-set parsing for Douyin, Xiaohongshu, Kuaishou, Weibo, AcFun, Bilibili, and Pixiv (README, 11-06).

Two sentences on the README's first screen are worth remembering:

YunX is and always will be free and open source. If you paid for it anywhere, you've been scammed; ask for a refund immediately.
Using Baidu Netdisk is not recommended, as it may lead to account risk control!

How the stars grew

Nearly doubled in a month, but slowing: 7 stars gained in the last 576 days, versus 7 in the 767 days before that.

A better measure of how many people use it than stars is installer downloads: 15 releases combined about 265K downloads, including one version (v1.2.6, released 08-29) at 77K, and the v10-31 release from 1.3.1 has reached 11-06K as of 21 (GitHub Releases, 11-06). This doesn't count people who got the installer from cloud drives or download sites, so actual installs are higher. The ratio of stars to downloads is roughly 1:40, which suggests most users are ordinary people rather than programmers who habitually star repos.

Where users come from

Bilibili resource-sharing accounts, the main channel. Besides the one at the top, 末春七虞 (08-31) got 26K views, 小菱awa (11-01) got 14.7K, and dozens more got a thousand to a few thousand views, many with the same pitch ("supports 512 multi-threading," "unthrottled magic tool"). Many videos link to Quark or UC cloud drives and codes instead of GitHub. Quark and UC both pay for new user referrals and save-to-drive commissions, so resource accounts likely monetize by pairing "free tool + drive link" (inference, unverified). In other words, the network promoting a tool that bypasses the drive is powered by the drive's own growth mechanics.

Long-form articles. The "junior high student" article on Zhihu, and a Smzdm long read with a back-to-school shopping tone that discusses risks.

linux.do. At least two sharing threads in the resource roundup (10-19 thread), with replies already saying "similar aggregated drive clients existed long ago; the most complete one now is YunX"; in this circle it has become the default answer.

Download sites, Telegram, QQ. 61ku, 32r, and k73 all list "YunX v1.3.1"; the Telegram channel "好软分享" reposts every version; the author has an official QQ group.

Releases are promotion in themselves. In 3 months there were 15 releases, expanding from 6 drives to 10 and adding 7 video platforms, and each version became a new topic for resource accounts ("YunX 1.2.6", "October latest version"). After the community-built desktop version YunX-Desktop came out, another wave of "the PC version is finally here" videos sent traffic back to the Android version.

Almost nobody in the English-speaking world has written about it; on X, only two or three accounts reposting trending GitHub projects have shared it, mostly Chinese accounts. It grew entirely inside the Chinese-language world.

Why this one

"Drive speed-up" is not a new category, and there have been many tools, but one very specific slot was open:

ToolWhat it isWhy nobody held that slot
PanDownloadWindows only, Baidu onlyThe author was arrested in 2020; the project is gone
LinkSwift (cloud drive direct-link downloader helper)Browser Tampermonkey script, 38K starsUsed on PC; it retrieves direct links to files in your own drive, requires IDM / aria2
pan-lightDesktop, Baidu only, 12K starsUnmaintained after 2023
netdisk-fast-downloadSelf-hosted parsing service, 3.4K starsFor tinkerers, not an app that works right after install
OpenList / AListDrive mounting, WebDAV, 25.5K starsWorks with your own drive, doesn't handle other people's share links
Quark / Baidu membershipsOfficial speed boostsQuark SVIP promo around ¥104 a year, Baidu SVIP around ¥178–198, and you have to save the file first

On a phone, across multiple drives, downloading other people's share links directly, open source and free with no ads: before August, no tool did all four. Nearly every Bilibili video's pitch boils down to this line: "one app on your phone handles every cloud drive."

Add two more things: timing, since late August is the back-to-school download peak; and story, "a junior high student wrote it on a phone, it's free forever, and anyone charging for it is a scammer." Compared with speed-up tools selling card keys, resource accounts had no qualms pushing it.

Who is already following, and how many stars they got

This is the section anyone considering following should read most closely. There are quite a few followers, and they picked up a fair number of stars:

ProjectApproachLaunchedstar

ikooc/baidujiexi_appFlutter, Baidu only10-12237
YunXPC, SeanWang114514/YunX-Desktop, and othersAnother batch of desktop ports9–OctoberSmall

A few things to note:

  • The ports that fill gaps get the most stars. YunX has no desktop version, and one port picked up 3,000+ stars in two months, nearly 10x in one month.
  • Copying it 6 weeks later, supporting a few more features, can still reach a thousand-plus stars (wenxi), but it grew through cross-promotion, so you need a good relationship with the original author.
  • Some people also repackage YunX and sell license keys. The line in the YunX README that says "anyone charging for this is a scammer" ends up vouching for the project instead.
  • It's licensed under AGPL, so any project built on its code must also be open source. Copying it into a closed-source commercial app carries a real cost.

The dark side of this path

  • The legal risk is real. The author of PanDownload was arrested 2020 years ago, and the case was classified as "providing programs and tools for intrusion and illegal control of computer information systems" (cited by smzdm from Navigation News). That author earned money from the tool; YunX is completely free, so the risk is lower, but "free and open source" is no shield.
  • Account risk. Comments on Bilibili already include people saying "I used this to download from Baidu Netdisk and got my account banned." The author themselves advises people in the README not to use Baidu.
  • It can break at any time. Once a netdisk upgrades its risk controls, parsing stops and the project has to chase fixes. If a netdisk puts pressure on the author, the project could stop overnight.
  • Growth is slowing, with both stars and downloads falling back from the back-to-school peak.

If it were you

B: worth a test, but don't build "yet another Android netdisk parser." YunX already holds that slot. The stars go to the parts it hasn't covered, and the whole path carries legal and account-ban risk.

Best suited for: indie devs who know the Chinese resource-sharing scene (Bilibili software channels, linux.do, Telegram channels) and can build native Android, iOS, or desktop clients. They must be okay with the project being interrupted by netdisk risk controls and needing ongoing maintenance.

Not for: anyone planning to charge, run ads, or sell memberships (monetization is exactly where PanDownload got into trouble, and it would immediately cost you the resource-account recommendations); anyone focused on English-speaking communities hoping to get stars from Hacker News and X (this demand barely exists there); or anyone with a real-name presence in China who is wary of any legal exposure.

How to do it: three directions, ranked from most to least confident:

  1. Fill the platforms it doesn't cover. Desktop already has ports. The open slots are iOS (distributed via sideloading or self-signing), Android TV, and TV boxes (people want to watch netdisk shows and online courses on TVs). Demand likely exists, but iOS distribution is painful and TV already has older tools like TVBox, so search Bilibili first to see whether someone has already done it well.
  2. Apply the same playbook to another category. Find a must-have need where mature desktop tools exist but mobile is empty, and build a native, open-source, ad-free app. Go for the lowest grey-area risk you can: for example, video-platform parsing (YunX added this later too), or batch download and format-conversion tools that are currently desktop-script-only.
  3. Ally with the original author, don't compete with them. YunX-Desktop is listed in the YunX README as the "official PC version," and wenxi and YunX recommend each other. Those two are the most-starred followers. Start by raising things in their issues and chatting in their QQ groups, and build the features their roadmap explicitly says they won't do.

Copy the AGPL license, put "free forever, anyone charging is a scammer" on the first screen of the README, and proactively steer users away from strict-risk-control netdisks like Baidu.

How to get users: You don't need to make videos yourself. Once it works, post in the linux.do resource thread and mention it in the original project's issues or groups. After that, Bilibili resource-sharing accounts will do the rest, because what they lack is topics. Release a new version every two or three weeks, each with one update line that works as a video title ("Added XX netdisk," "TV version is here"), and the resource accounts will promote it again.

Timing: Download peaks come around the start of the semester (late February in 2027) and before and after winter break, so aim to ship the first working version before the end of January.

Signs you're reading this wrong: ① YunX or a follower gets a legal letter or takedown from a netdisk, or the author announces they're stopping development. The legal risk has materialized, so don't keep going. ② YunX's new stars over the last 7 days drop below 200, and new-version downloads stay under 10k. Demand is fading, and ports won't get stars either. ③ A netdisk launches a free "download shared files directly on mobile, no speed limit" feature. The gap has been filled by an official player. ④ The reverse: an iOS or TV version gets over a thousand stars within a month. The platform-gap path is real, so move fast.

Why YunX (CYQawa/YunX) took off

Research date 2026-11-06. Channel: GitHub. Data sources are noted after each item; anything unconfirmed is marked "unverified."

One line

YunX is an open-source Android app. You paste a share link from Quark, UC, Thunder, Baidu, 123, 139, 115, Lanzou, and other netdisks, and it parses a direct link without first saving the file to your own drive, then downloads it in parallel chunks. Later it added parsing for video and photo collections from Douyin, Xiaohongshu, Bilibili, and others. It took off because people have long wanted to download files other people shared on netdisks straight to their phones, and no clean, free, open-source native Android tool existed. During the pre-semester download peak, a batch of Bilibili "resource-sharing / software recommendation" accounts pushed it as a topic, and traffic came in.

1. Data

  • GitHub: repo created 2026-08-06, had 11-06 stars, 6,547 forks as of 341 (GitHub API, 11-06). Our tracker: 10-01 is 3,476,11-06 is 6,503, nearly doubled in a month; up 7 over the last 576 days, up 7 over the prior 767 days, slowing; single-day peak 195 (10-25).
  • APK downloads on Releases show usage better than stars: about 265k total across 15 releases. v1.2.6 (released 08-29) 77k, v1.2.9 43k, v1.3.0 41k, v1.3.1 (released 10-31) already 21k (GitHub Releases API). Many users also got the APK from netdisks or download sites, which isn't counted, so actual installs are higher.
  • Early curve: 16 days from repo creation to 700 stars, APK downloads 36k+ (smzdm article, 08-23); the Zhihu article had 3,600+ stars when written; a Threads repost said "3.8K, up 74 today."
  • Author CYQawa: account registered 2025-01, 292 followers, 8 public repos, but only this one is known. The Zhihu article says the author "reportedly is a middle schooler with no computer." The project was developed on a phone using AndroidIDE, and the README says "developed and debugged on AndroidIDE."

Bottom line: The "cloud drive acceleration" category has many competitors, but most are desktop tools, support only one drive, or handle files in your own drive. Mobile, multi-drive aggregation, direct download of others' shared links, and open-source with no ads: almost nothing before August met all four. YunX claimed this slot first; wenxi, YunGet and a pile of Desktop ports only appeared two months later.

III. Growth levers (where users come from)

  1. Main channel on Bilibili: software-recommendation / resource-sharing accounts (confirmed). Related videos by view count: 林灵玲の科技小屋 BV1sRbY61Eaj (08-17)51k views, 4,140 favorites; 末春七虞 (08-31)26k; 小菱awa (11-01)14.7k; plus dozens more with a few thousand views each. A 什么值得买 article says "from Aug 15 Bilibili suddenly surfaced dozens of related videos," which lines up with the download surge from v1.2.4 to v1.2.6. Many titles copy the same pitch ("supports 512 multithreading", "unlimited-speed tool"), which looks like resource accounts batch-reposting content (Bilibili search API, 11-06).
    • Many of these resource accounts don't link to GitHub; they link to Quark / UC drive links or codes. For example, titles end with /~45903aNg2J~:/, and smzdm also noted the top video gives a UC drive link. Quark and UC both pay for "new user / transfer" referrals, so these accounts likely monetize by pairing a free tool with drive links (motive unverified). The irony is that the people promoting this tool for bypassing drives are running on the drives' own referral mechanics.
  2. Long-form posts on Zhihu / SMZDM / Sspai (confirmed): a Zhihu post, 'An open-source netdisk downloader, and the author is still a middle schooler', built around a personal story; and a long SMZDM piece 08-23 (back-to-school buying guide tone, talks through the risks).
  3. linux.do community (confirmed): the resource-roundup version has at least two sharing threads (topic 3045795,10-19; topic 3089218). Another thread has someone saying, "Similar aggregate drive clients have existed for a while; the most complete one right now is yunxi (YunX)," showing it has become the default recommendation in this circle.
  4. Download sites / Telegram / QQ channels (confirmed): 61ku, 32r, and k73 all list "YunX app download v1.3.1"; the Telegram channel "Haoruan Sharing" reposts every version; a QQ channel posted it as a "software pick of the day"; the author runs a QQ discussion group 635207650. These handle long-tail search and repeat updates.
  5. GitHub trending repost accounts (confirmed, small volume): on X, @weiwei2018831 and @denziideng, and on Threads @xiaoxiunique, have reposted GitHub trending; trendshift and SourceForge have mirror pages. Searching our x-radar corpus for "YunX / YunX" returns 0 results, meaning the big X accounts never wrote about it.
  6. Frequent releases + PC-ecosystem feedback loop (confirmed): 3 months, 15 releases; each one gets re-pushed by resource accounts as a fresh topic ("YunX1.2.6", "October latest"). After YunX-Desktop came out, another wave of "the PC version is finally here" videos followed (BV1XRnG61EBo, BV1B2eQ6aEke), and that volume flowed back into the Android version.

4. Why it broke out

  1. Strong demand, perfect timing: Drive throttling has been a long-standing pain point. Quark has become the main drive for short dramas, online courses and resource sharing over the past two years, and on a phone you have to install a client, transfer the file, then put up with throttling. Late August is the back-to-school download peak (smzdm's words: "real demand met a real tool").
  2. Fills an empty slot: After PanDownload died, the good tools were all on desktop (LinkSwift and others). No mobile app offered "multiple drives + direct download from shared links + open source."
  3. Great product experience: native Kotlin + Compose MD3 UI; detects the clipboard and auto-splits extraction codes; Quark and UC links work without logging in; chunked parallel downloads with resume; auto-cleans temp files after each download; no sign-up, no in-app purchases, credentials stored only on the device (the Zhihu write-up covers this point by point).
  4. "Free, open source, no ads, middle-school author" is an easy story to tell: Resource accounts are willing to promote it, the README's first screen says "anything you paid for is a scam," and compared with the card-key tools on the market, that builds trust.
  5. Bilibili resource accounts' topic machine: Where there's a tool there are videos, where there are videos there are drive referrals, so dozens of accounts push it repeatedly on their own, and the author spent nothing (no paid promotion found).
  6. Fast iteration, more supported platforms: It expanded from 6 drives to 10, and added 7 video platforms, and each expansion gave a new promotion hook.

5. Differentiation

Compared with similar tools, what sets it apart is: mobile, multi-drive aggregation, direct parsing of others' shared links (no transfer needed), open source, free, and ad-free. LinkSwift on desktop solves "my own drive files download slowly"; YunX solves "someone sent me a link, and I want to download it directly on my phone." That difference is the main reason it took off: almost every Bilibili video's selling point is "one app on your phone for all drives." The video parsing added later (Douyin, Xiaohongshu, Bilibili, Pixiv) pushed it toward a "universal parser," which both widened its use cases and gave new promotion hooks.

6. Visibility and copycats

  • Visibility: spreading in small circles. The Chinese software-recommendation scene (Bilibili, Zhihu, smzdm, linux.do, Telegram) mostly knows it; the English-speaking world and the big X accounts never wrote about it (x-radar: 0 results). There's no public revenue, and the project itself charges nothing.
  • Copycats have already appeared: YunGet (jiayuxuan123, a derivative of YunX, 348 stars), wenxi (1.3k stars, both platforms, 16 drives), YunXPC, SeanWang114514/YunX-Desktop (Electron port), ikooc/baidujiexi_app; there are also repackaged versions sold for money (the README and smzdm comments mention people "making money by selling card keys").

7. What others can learn

  • Find a gray-area must-have where desktop has mature tools and mobile is empty, and build a native, open-source, ad-free version. Bilibili and Zhihu resource accounts will distribute it for you. They want topics and they want drive-link monetization, and this gives them both.
  • Release often, so every version gives promoters a "new version" hook. Put "always free; anything paid is a scam" on the README's first screen, so repackaged versions end up vouching for you.
  • Allow, even welcome, third-party ports (Desktop), and use other people's ecosystem to cover your gaps.
  • AGPL license: forces copycats to open-source too, raising the cost for closed-source commercial versions to copy it.

VIII. Unknowns

  • Real user count: Release downloads are about 265k, but downloads spread through drives and download sites can't be measured, and retention is unknown.
  • Whether resource accounts promote it mainly for Quark / UC referral commissions: unverified.
  • Compliance risk: Baidu users have already reported account bans, and the README itself warns about it; PanDownload has a legal precedent. If a drive company tightens its risk controls or pressures the author, the project could stop at any time. So the lifespan and replicability of this category are highly uncertain.
  • The author's "middle school student" identity is a secondhand account from Zhihu, unverified.
