# Star it for 500 lossless songs: how LastWave's desktop build got its 1000 stars

**What it is** An open-source YouTube Music desktop player (Win/Mac/Linux) that streams lossless FLAC for free, using the developer's own paid accounts.

**Why it took off** The Android version first built up about 510k downloads. Lossless plugin access is capped at 500 tracks a day, but starring two repos and following two accounts raises the cap to 1000. The desktop version's stars rose along with that.

**C** **How you could follow it** Don't copy its gray-area audio sources. Learn its structure: first grow users on the end that already has them, use group-chat access to pull people into a community, then open new repos. If you want to build a desktop music client, follow Limusic: go native and stay away from copyrighted content.

C grade: the stars rest on the Android user base plus "stars for quota," and the quota is only scarce because of audio sources with copyright risk. Followers get neither of those. The mechanics can be learned, but copying them isn't worth it. What the small circles are saying

Data (updated daily) · Repo created 2026-09-10 · 996 stars · 7 days +144

GitHub · stars

Data 2026-10-09 → 2026-11-08 (31 days, 30 observations). Points before 10-28 come from deeply / archive backfill, not every day has one

LastWave-Desktop is an open-source YouTube Music desktop client for Windows, Mac and Linux. Its selling point is free lossless FLAC playback. The repo was created less than two months ago and has nearly 1000 stars. Most of those stars didn't come from the desktop app earning them: the same team's Android app first built a large user base, and the team then wrote "star the repo" into the listening-quota rules. Below: what it is, where the stars came from, who else is building the same thing, and which parts you can learn from if you want your own open-source project to get this many stars, and which you can't.

### "We didn't take a single shortcut"

In Nov 6, LastWave's Telegram channel posted a celebration: "LastWave downloads passed 500k, Native about 2.6k stars, Desktop 1k stars, still climbing." It followed with another post: "500k. We took it step by step, not a single shortcut 😏."

The team's website has a page called "Lossless plugin setup guide," and its last paragraph reads: "Optional: raise your daily quota by 100%. The dashboard lists a few small GitHub tasks that raise your quota from 500 tracks a day to 1000 tracks a day. The tasks are starring repos and following developer accounts." The dashboard's "GitHub Bonus" section has four items: star LastWave-Native, star LastWave-Desktop, follow @ajisth69, and follow @Clash-Projects. Connect your GitHub account, complete the check, and the quota doubles.

The three numbers behind these four tasks are almost the same as of 11-06: the desktop app has about 970 stars, the Clash-Projects organization has 901 followers, and the main developer, ajisth69, has 900 followers (GitHub, 11-06). For a typical project, stars and the author's followers are far apart. These three numbers sitting so close together suggests the people who starred the desktop app are mostly the same people doing the tasks (inference, high confidence).

### What it is

A music player written in Flutter. Playlists, recommendations and search all go through YouTube Music. The difference is the audio source: YouTube Music itself only serves lossy formats like Opus and AAC. LastWave built a separate "lossless plugin" that uses the developer's own paid accounts to fetch FLAC from other platforms. Reddit users say it pulls from Qobuz, Tidal and Deezer (unverified). In Nov 4, the channel also taught users to claim an Amazon Music Unlimited free trial with a new email address, and to generate plugins to share with friends.

Beyond lossless playback, it packs in a lot: WASAPI exclusive output (audio bypasses the system mixer and goes straight to the decoder, which audiophiles call Bit-Perfect), 15-band EQ and AutoEQ, 17 lyrics sources, Spotify Canvas, listen-together, Last.fm, and Discord status display. The 2.0.0 released in November added auto-mixing, two-way sync with YouTube music libraries, podcasts, and local music. It shipped 8 versions in two months.

Lossless access requires getting past a gate: register on the plugin site, verify through a Telegram bot or Discord, and joining the official channel is required for verification. Then you get a personal plugin link to paste into the app's settings. The default is 500 tracks a day. The official site says the rate limit exists because some users batch-downloaded tens of thousands of tracks at once, and the developer's paid accounts were banned several times.

### How the stars climbed

Start with the timeline (Trendshift and GitHub daily snapshots):

| Timeline | What happened |
|---|---|
| 07-30 | Android version LastWave-Native repo created |
| 09-10 | Desktop repo created |
| 09-23 / 09-26 | Android 4.2.0 / 4.2.1 released; lossless made a separate plugin requiring verification |
| From ¥09-27 | Desktop stars start rising: 09-27 +22, 09-28 +77, 09-29 +60; reached #1 on the Trendshift Dart language chart |
| 09-30 | Desktop v1.0.0 released |
| 10-16 → 11-06 | 587 → 951 stars, steadily gaining 10 to 30 a day, +148 in the last 7 days |

The most telling are the third and fourth lines: **the desktop app's first formal release hadn't shipped yet, but its stars had already started climbing** , right after the plugin launched. There's no record of which day the GitHub Bonus was added, but the order of events says a lot.

The desktop app's own installers have been downloaded only about 13.8k times in total. The star-to-download ratio is roughly 1 to 14, far higher than typical desktop tools (GitHub Releases, 11-06). Its real source of users is the Android app: its APK has been downloaded about 510k times (including updates and repeat downloads, so not 510k individual people). Android users completing tasks to unlock more lossless tracks pushed the desktop stars up too, even when they never installed the desktop app.

A few other channels brought people in:

- **Telegram and Discord groups.** Verification requires joining the groups, so everyone who wants lossless ends up in them: the Telegram group has 8,480 members, the channel 2,074, and Discord 1,852 (public pages, 11-06). New versions debut in the channel. In Oct 31 the channel even posted asking people to write reviews and share screenshots on X, Reddit and Telegram.

- **Piracy and modded-app subreddits on Reddit.** r/Piracy, r/PiracyArchive, r/MorpheApp, r/androidapps and r/headphonesindia all had recommendation posts from 8 through October. Three of those subreddits showed the same comment word for word: "After finding this app I canceled all my subscriptions… LastWave (supports lossless FLAC)". It looks copy-pasted (who posted it is unverified).

- **India's tech nerds.** @Techjunkie_Aman on X posted about the desktop version of 1.0 in Sep 30; a Peak Android episode on YouTube called "Ultimate Open-Source Music App" has 19K views, and the other Shorts only got a few hundred to a thousand-plus. No tech media covered it, and no big X accounts have mentioned it.

- **APK sites and software directories.** AlternativeTo, AUR, apkpure and others list it, and blogs in French and Arabic have written about it. As it gained attention, knockoffs appeared too: in Oct 31, the developer said in the channel that someone had cloned the website to run third-party ads, and that he would file a DMCA takedown.

### Who else is building the same thing

Third-party YouTube Music desktop clients have existed for a while, but none offer free lossless:

| Project | star | How it differs |
|---|---|---|
| Pear Desktop (formerly th-ch/youtube-music) | 34k | Wraps the web version in an Electron shell and adds plugins, with YouTube's native audio quality |
| Spotube | 50.6k | Also Flutter, uses Spotify's catalog, doesn't focus on lossless |
| ytmdesktop | 6.7k | Web wrapper |
| Kaset | 2.5k | Mac only |
| Harmony Music | 3.1k | Cross-platform Flutter, hasn't been updated in a long time |
| Limusic | 1.8k | Created in July. A native Rust client with 7-day growth of +374, faster than LastWave, and no lossless. LastWave's acknowledgments credit it with borrowed code. |

The Android side is more crowded. This summer, "YouTube Music client + lossless module + liquid-glass UI" became a trend: BitChord (5.8k stars, +952 in the last 7 days), Echo-Music, YumaPlayer and Square were all created in 7 and August, and Metrolist (14k) and SimpMusic (12.8k) are older. Most are Android-only. Apart from LastWave, almost none offer free lossless on desktop too.

The comparison shows two things. The desktop version really did hit an open gap. But Limusic has no quota incentive at all, and relying only on "native and good to use," it gained more than twice as many stars in one week.

### Why this one

- **The demand is real.** "YouTube Music's recommendations plus FLAC quality, and free," is what audiophiles and the piracy crowd want.

- **Quota is scarce, and stars are the only way to raise it.** 500 tracks a day isn't enough for heavy users. Completing four GitHub tasks doubles it, so heavy users all became stargazers of two repos and followers of two accounts.

- **Start with an Android base, then open a desktop repo.** The new repo plugs straight into the same reward system, so its cold-start stars barely have to be earned.

- **It looks like a serious project.** Lots of features, frequent updates, and it made the Dart chart at #1, so passing developers are willing to star it.

### Risks

- **Audio sources.** Lossless streams rely on the developer's own paid accounts, or on users opening trial accounts to fetch them. Copyright and account risk both hang over it. The accounts have been banned more than once. If a platform or rights holder moves against it, the core selling point disappears.

- **GitHub's rules.** GitHub's acceptable-use policy does not allow trading rewards for stars (this is the common understanding; specific clauses haven't been checked one by one). If it's judged to be star inflation, the penalty ranges from purging a batch of stars to banning the repo.

- **Lots of copycats.** BitChord and Echo already have the "lossless module" model. Nobody has copied "stars for quota" yet.

### If it were you

**Verdict:** This star-growth method can be learned, but it isn't worth copying. Its stars rest on two things: about 510k downloads' worth of Android users, and a quota that is only scarce because of gray-area audio sources. Followers can't get either of those, and shouldn't go after them.

**Who it suits:** People who already have an open-source tool with real users, where the tool has something scarce built in (free quota, cloud compute, API call limits). They can learn its structure without learning its audio sources.

**Who it doesn't suit:** People starting from zero who want to build another client on "free lossless." The audio layer carries legal risk, and the space is already crowded.

**How to do it:**

1. Wanted a music client: learn from Limusic, not LastWave. Pick a platform where people still use web wrappers, build a native, fast, good-looking client, and stay away from copyrighted content. Native music clients on Linux and Mac are still rare, and Limusic's +374 a week shows people will pay for this path.

2. Study its growth structure: first get users on the end with the most people (Android, browser extensions), then open a second repo. Use "join the group to unlock quota" to pull users into Telegram or Discord, where every new version launches first.

3. Don't make stars a hard requirement for rewards. Thank people in the app and showcase contributors in the README instead, and you stay clear of GitHub's rules.

**How to get users:** follow its playbook. Start with subreddits that match your tool, like r/androidapps and r/headphones, then look for YouTube alt accounts in India and Southeast Asia that make "open-source app" roundups. Trendshift's language charts are easier to climb than the overall chart: niche languages (Dart, Rust) can hit #1 in the first week.

**When to move:** the wave of "YouTube Music client" apps on Android started in July, so the open slots for native desktop clients may last a few more months. Once big Android players like BitChord and SimpMusic ship desktop versions, those slots are gone (inference).

**What would prove this wrong:** if LastWave-Desktop still gains 10+ stars a day after GitHub Bonus goes offline, then the desktop product alone is strong enough to drive stars, the "stars buy rewards" read is wrong, and a lossless desktop client is a better bet than this write-up says. Conversely, if GitHub purges a batch of its stars or the audio source breaks, the path is riskier than described here.

Where users come from

- **Verified** **In-product incentive: stars / follows unlock lossless quota** : the addon dashboard's GitHub Bonus has four tasks (Star Native, Star Desktop, Follow @ajisth69, Follow @Clash-Projects). Completing them raises the daily quota from 500 to 1000 tracks (lastwave.app/addon screenshot). Desktop's ~970 stars ≈ the org's 901 followers ≈ ajisth69's 900 followers

- **Verified** **Old Android users funneled over** : LastWave-Native Release downloads ~510k, with the README, website, and channel linking to each other

- **Verified** **Telegram/Discord community (joining the group is required for verification)** : t.me/clashprojects has 8,480 members, the channel 2,074, Discord 1,852. New versions launch first in the channel

- **Verified** **Reddit piracy and mod communities** : recommendation threads in r/MorpheApp, r/Piracy, r/PiracyArchive, r/androidapps, and r/headphonesindia. The same recommendation comment shows up in three of them, which looks like copy-paste promotion

- **Verified** **Tech alt accounts and YouTube** : @Techjunkie_Aman 09-30 posted a v1.0.0 intro thread; the Peak Android roundup video has 19k views; several Shorts each got a few hundred to over a thousand views

- **Verified** **Trendshift language charts** : 09-28/29 reached #1 on the Dart chart, then repeatedly placed in the top 25

## Why LastWave-Desktop (Clash-Projects/LastWave-Desktop) got traction

> Channel: GitHub | Research day 2026-11-06 | Data: github repo_profile/repo_day, Trendshift, GitHub API, lastwave.app, public Telegram/Discord pages, Reddit/YouTube search results

### One line

LastWave-Desktop is a Flutter cross-platform (Win/macOS/Linux) YouTube Music desktop client. Its pitch is "free lossless FLAC playback" plus Bit-Perfect/WASAPI exclusive mode. **Its stars mostly don't come from the desktop app itself** . Two things drive them: first, users brought in by the same org's Android app LastWave-Native (about 510k APK downloads in total); second, the "GitHub Bonus" in the lossless addon dashboard. Starring the Native and Desktop repos and following @ajisth69 and @Clash-Projects raises the daily lossless quota from 500 tracks to 1000. Desktop has about 970 stars, the org has 901 followers, and ajisth69 has 900 followers. These three numbers are nearly identical, which suggests the traffic largely comes from the same group of people completing all four tasks.

### 1. Basic data

- 2026-09-10 created the repo; stars began around 09-27 (Trendshift: 09-27 +22, 09-28 +77, 09-29 +60, reaching #1 on the Dart chart). v1.0.0 shipped on 09-30.

- In the repo (github repo_day): 10-16 587 → 11-06 951; gain_7d 148, last week 133; daily gains steady at 10–30, peak single day 34 (10-28). As of 11-06 the GitHub API shows 970 stars and 26 forks.

- Desktop Release downloads total about 13.8k (v1.5.0 6,050; v2.0.1 1,283; GitHub API). The ratio of stars to downloads is about 1:14, far above typical desktop tools.

- LastWave-Native (Kotlin, created 2026-07-30): 2,569 stars, 152 forks; about 510k total release downloads (5.0.0 80k, 4.3.1 123k… ; GitHub API). The official Telegram channel 11-06 posted a celebration: "500k downloads, Native 2.6k stars, Desktop 1k stars."

- Community: Telegram support group t.me/clashprojects has 8,480 members, channel t.me/MaterialYouApp has 2,074, Discord "LastWave" has 1,852 (11-06 public page / invite API).

- Lead developer ajisth69 (Ajisth Singh, India, account registered 2025-10, 900 followers). The desktop repo's top committer is MrinmoyHaloi (257 commits), and there are 59 commits under the name "claude" (AI-assisted development).

### 2. Competitors

| Product | Where | Launched | Scale | How it differs from LastWave-Desktop |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Pear Desktop (formerly th-ch/youtube-music) | Open-source desktop | 2019 | 34.0k stars, gain_7d 51 | An Electron shell wrapped around the YTM web app plus plugins; audio is only YT's Opus/AAC, no lossless |
| ytmdesktop | Open-source desktop | 2018 | 6.7k stars | Also a web wrapper, no lossless |
| Spotube | Open-source Flutter desktop + mobile | 2021 | 50.6k stars | Spotify metadata plus plugin audio, doesn't push lossless or Bit-Perfect |
| Harmony Music | Open-source Flutter cross-platform | 2023 | 3.1k stars, stalled | Also a Flutter YTM client, no lossless addon, slow updates |
| Limusic(SimoHypers/limusic) | Open-source Rust desktop | 2026-07 | 1.8k stars, gain_7d 374 | Native desktop YTM client, gaining faster than LastWave; LastWave's credits note it borrowed the InnerTube client registry |
| Kaset | Open-source macOS | 2025-12 | 2.5k stars | macOS only, no lossless |
| TIDAL desktop clients like sone | Open source | 2026 | About 500 stars | Requires your own TIDAL subscription; LastWave supplies audio through the developer's account, so users pay nothing |
| Android clients in the same category as LastWave: BitChord, Echo-Music, YumaPlayer, Square, Metrolist, SimpMusic | Open-source Android | 2023–2026 | BitChord 5.8k (gain_7d 952), Echo 2.3k, Metrolist 14k, SimpMusic 12.8k | All of them are on Android doing "YTM + lossless module + liquid glass". Only SimpMusic also covers desktop. Lossless YTM clients on desktop are basically just LastWave. |
| YouTube Music / Spotify / Apple Music / TIDAL official apps | big tech | — | — | YTM has no lossless; the other services charge a subscription for lossless |

Bottom line: the YTM desktop client category is crowded, but the combination of "desktop + free lossless FLAC + Bit-Perfect" is almost unique to this one. The same playbook is already being run on Android by a group of people (BitChord is growing much faster).

### 3. Growth tactics (evidence)

1. **Stars and follows baked into the product quota (confirmed, this is the main engine)** . From v4.2.x (late 2026-09) on, the no-strings-attached version became a standalone addon: users sign up at lastwaveaddons.clashprojects.qd.je, verify "joined channel" via a Telegram bot or Discord, get a personal addon URL, and get 500 first per day by default. The "GitHub Bonus" panel in the dashboard lists four tasks: Star LastWave-Native, Star LastWave-Desktop, Follow @ajisth69, Follow @Clash-Projects. Connect a GitHub account to verify and you get +500, which is 1,000 first per day (see lastwave.app/addon and the dashboard screenshot addon-github-bonus.webp). Evidence: desktop stars (about 970), org followers (901), and ajisth69 followers (900) are almost identical in number. Desktop stars started climbing at 09-27, right after the addon launched (Native 4.2.0 09-23, 4.2.1 09-26), and that was 3 days before desktop v1.0.0.

2. **Android app drives volume, desktop rides along (confirmed)** . Native has about 510k APK downloads and is the source of the whole funnel. Desktop's README, website, and Telegram channel all cross-link with Native.

3. **Telegram/Discord community (confirmed)** . Verification requires joining a group, so every user who wants lossless ends up in the 8.5k-member Telegram group and the 1.9k-member Discord. New versions (like Desktop 2.0.0 and 2.0.1) launch first in the channel.

4. **Reddit piracy and mod communities (confirmed, some of it possibly seeded)** . r/MorpheApp, r/Piracy, r/PiracyArchive, r/androidapps, and r/headphonesindia all have recommendation threads from 2026-08 through October. In r/MorpheApp (08-30), r/Piracy (09-05), and r/PiracyArchive (09-19), the same comment appears word for word: "Cancelled all my subscription after I discovered this app... LastWave (Lossless FLAC support)". It looks like copy-paste promotion (poster not verified). There is also an r/LastWave subreddit.

5. **India / Southeast Asia tech accounts and short video (confirmed, small scale)** . X account @Techjunkie_Aman posted an intro for the desktop v1.0.0 on 09-30; on YouTube there's a Peak Android "Ultimate Open-Source Music Apps" video (19k views), AAYUSH (3.6k), and several Shorts with a few hundred to over a thousand views. Searching "LastWave" in our X corpus returns 0 posts; TikTok returns nothing relevant.

6. **Aggregator and APK sites (confirmed)** . AlternativeTo, AUR (lastwave-bin), apkpure, appteka, ApkMagic and PaidShitForFree all list it, plus coverage on a French blog (mondary.design 10-09) and an Arabic blog (saudiandroid 09-12).

### 4. Why it took off

- **The need it hits is "free lossless listening"** : YouTube Music only serves Opus/AAC. LastWave decodes FLAC through the developer's own paid accounts (Reddit users say Qobuz, Tidal, Deezer; the official site even encourages users to self-host an addon with an Amazon Music Unlimited trial account), which appeals strongly to the piracy crowd and audiophiles. The official site itself admits some users bulk-downloaded tens of thousands of songs, getting the developer's premium accounts banned several times, which is why rate limits were added.

- **The rate limit itself was turned into a growth machine** : quota is scarce, and stars and follows are the route to "free quota," so every heavy user becomes a star and follow on two repos and two accounts. Even if the desktop app has only 14k downloads, it still gets star counts in line with the Native user base.

- **Completeness on both platforms** : the desktop app packs in WASAPI exclusive mode, 15-band EQ/AutoEQ, 17 lyric sources, Spotify Canvas, listen-together, Last.fm, Discord RPC, and shipped 8 releases in two months (including 2.0). On Trendshift it looks like an "active, high-quality Dart project," and 09-28 and 09-29 reached #1 on the Dart chart.

- **Timing** : in summer 2026, a wave hit Android around "YTM client + lossless module + liquid glass UI" (BitChord, Echo, YumaPlayer and Square were all being built between 7 and August). LastWave was one of the few to bring this to the desktop too.

### 5. Differentiation

- Compared with desktop peers (Pear Desktop, ytmdesktop, Kaset, Harmony, Limusic), **it's the only one with free lossless FLAC and Bit-Perfect** . The others all stick to YT's native quality. That is a real reason for users to show up.

- But **the direct cause of the star count is not differentiation; it's the GitHub Bonus mechanism plus the Native user base** . The evidence: stars and followers are nearly equal, and the star-to-download ratio is high. The product's differentiation gets users to install; the quota mechanism converts installers into stars.

- Risk: lossless depends on the developer's own (or trial) paid accounts for supply, which is legally and account-wise fragile. The moat is also easy to copy; BitChord and Echo are already doing "module sources."

### 6. Visibility

Buzz in small circles: piracy and mod subreddits, Telegram groups and Indian tech accounts are spreading it, along with one YouTube compilation video with 19k views. No tech media coverage, none from big X accounts (0 posts in our corpus), and no revenue involved (only Buy Me a Coffee, UPI and GitHub Sponsors donations, amounts undisclosed).

### 7. Copycats

- The "lossless extension / module" model: Echo-Music has a separate lossless-extension repo, BitChord has a "configured module source," and YumaPlayer and Square (lossless.wtf) do similar things. They're peers in the same wave, not necessarily copies of LastWave.

- "Stars / follows for quota": I found no public case of others doing this.

### 8. What others can learn

- Tying scarce resources (quota, allowances) to GitHub stars and follows, verified via OAuth. Very effective for growing stars on open-source tools, but it may violate GitHub's terms on incentivized stars and risks being cleaned up.

- Using a Telegram/Discord group as the verification gate builds a private community in one step.

- Build a user base first on a high-traffic platform (Android APK), then open a second repo that shares the same incentives, so the new repo's star cold start is nearly free.

### 9. Still unclear

- The exact launch date of GitHub Bonus (estimated between 09-23 and 09-27, matching when Desktop stars started climbing, but no direct log).

- The GitHub stargazers API couldn't be queried this time, so the quality of starring accounts and overlap with Native can't be verified.

- Who posted those identical recommendation comments on Reddit.

- "500k downloads" are Release download counts (including repeat downloads and updates), not unique users.
