Free 24-bit lossless YouTube Music client: LastWave hit 2,500 stars, and the move worth copying is its "trade quota for stars" trick
What it is A third-party YouTube Music client for Android that gives you 24-bit FLAC lossless for free, with audiophile features like USB DAC passthrough and headphone EQ.
Why it took off Indian headphone enthusiasts wanted lossless without paying, and this one delivers it free once installed. Reddit freebie communities and Indian tech creators spread it.
CHow you can follow it Don't build another lossless music client (the space is crowded and sits in a copyright gray zone). Instead, port its funnel to your own open-source project: rate-limit your most expensive resource per account, gate it behind a group join, and trade stars and follows for double the quota.

Early on Sep 28 2026, an Indian X account called Levi posted four screenshots with the line "found a music player that takes sound quality seriously," followed by a list of selling points: Hi-Res lossless, Dolby Atmos, no ads, open source. By Nov 6 the post had 180k views and 2,100 likes. That same day LastWave's GitHub repo gained 243 stars and hit #1 on the Kotlin daily chart. LastWave is a third-party YouTube Music client for Android, built 99 days ago and now at 11-06 2,577 stars. The code base belongs to others. It took off for two reasons: the author ran his own backend that serves FLAC lossless for free, and he traded the "listen to more lossless" allowance for users' stars, follows and group joins. Below: how it got started, how crowded this lane is now, and what you can take from it.
What it is
A Kotlin Android music app (GPL-3.0) that plays YouTube Music content, with a UI and features borrowed from established open-source clients like Metrolist, InnerTune and SimpMusic. Its own additions are a full set of audiophile features: 24-bit FLAC lossless, Bit-Perfect output with USB DAC passthrough, AutoEQ headphone correction, Dolby Atmos, an iOS-style Liquid Glass interface, and a page that scores your signal chain.
The key is lossless. YouTube Music itself only serves lossy Opus. LastWave's FLAC comes from a backend the author Ajisth Singh (India, GitHub account created 2025-10) runs himself, descended from another project of his from August, ClashFLAC. Per Reddit comments, the source is Qobuz-class, but which service it is and whose account it uses can't be verified from outside.
Why now, and why India
Lots of people in India play with in-ear monitors (IEMs), but few are willing to pay for Apple Music or Qobuz. "Where can I get lossless for free" is a perennial question on r/iemlndia. A June 2026 post got 81 upvotes and 90 comments; in March people were still discussing buying cheap Deezer through a VPN. LastWave's answer: install it and listen, no cost.
Growth came from late August to early September, before the stars. 8-30 on r/MorpheApp, in a thread asking for a Qobuz alternative, someone said they cancelled their subscriptions after finding this app; 9-1 someone on r/androidapps posted the repo link. The v3.4.1 released the same day saw APK downloads jump from the usual two or three hundred per version to 15k (GitHub Releases, 11-06 counts, including multiple architecture builds, so inflated). By 11-06, all versions' APKs totaled about 490k downloads. Piracy resource sites and third-party APK sites also re-hosted it, and on Appteka an older version alone has 42k downloads.
Then came Indian tech creators. On the same day as Levi's post 9-28, another self-described audiophile account, @Heisenberg_7771, also posted about it. Mrtechinside, with 350k followers on Facebook, shared a post saying "this music app beats every app," with 169k views. 10-20, an Instagram reposting account, ran a Reel, and that day's stars went up by 83. All these posts follow the same template: copy the feature list, add screenshots. The more features it packs, the more screenshot-worthy it is to forward. Whether anyone was paid to promote it can't be determined.
How the stars were "collected"
This is the most interesting part of the whole thing. From v4.2.0 of 9-23 onward, lossless was split out into a separate addon. Getting the addon link takes four steps (lastwave.app/addon/, 11-06):
- Register on the addon site;
- Verify through Telegram or Discord. On the Telegram route, the bot asks you to first join the official channel @clashprojects; the Discord route is one-click authorization, which also gets you into the server;
- Get a personal link good for 500 songs a day;
- Want double? Go to the dashboard and complete 4 "GitHub tasks": star the repo and follow the developer's account, then get 1,000 songs a day once done.
The author's explanation: some people bulk-downloaded thousand-song playlists and got his premium accounts banned, so quotas and verification were needed. The result: the Telegram channel has 8,485 subscribers and Discord 1,858 members (11-06), and after 9-25 daily star growth clearly stepped up.
But don't overrate it. Measured against APK downloads, LastWave's star ratio is about 0.5 per thousand, close to BitChord, which doesn't run this mechanism, and higher than Echo-Music's about 1.5 per thousand. So this trick works, but it isn't the main source of stars; the bulk still comes from hundreds of thousands of real users. What it really adds is a private community the author can message at any time.
Who it's competing with
The same summer, the same group of Indian developers did the same thing:
| Project | Launched | Scale (11-06) | Compared with LastWave |
|---|---|---|---|
| BitChord | 2026-08-11 | 5,945 stars, about 1.13M APK downloads, +7 in the last 952 days | The largest of its kind; lossless runs as a pluggable module that the community writes addons for, with no stars-for-quota scheme |
| Echo-Music | 2026-08-15 | 2,319 stars, about 1.57M APK downloads | Three times LastWave's downloads, and it doesn't push lossless |
| Convx | 2026-07-23 | 1,253 star | Same Liquid Glass and word-by-word lyrics, no lossless backend |
| Metrolist / SimpMusic | 2023 | 14k / 13k stars | Its code base is an established, stable one that doesn't offer lossless |
| VxMusic | 2026 | Claims 11k users (unverified) | Closed source, also targets lossless |
More new repos keep coming: sekai-tune, SMusic, LunarTune, riff, Prism, plus a small repo that writes a lossless addon just for BitChord. BitChord users are still posting on X: "plug in LastWave's addon and you can listen lossless too." LastWave sits mid-pack in this crowd, and it's cooling: +222 over the last 7 days, +308 the week before.
How many people know about it
Only in small circles: Indian audiophiles and free-stuff crowds (Reddit, Telegram, resource hubs like FMHY), a few Indian tech creators. No mainstream press, and the author only takes donations. But "YouTube Music client + lossless module" is already a crowded copycat category.
If it were you
Verdict: C. Building another "free lossless YouTube Music client" isn't worth it: BitChord is already twice its size, and new repos keep appearing in batches. LastWave's lossless backend, which is different from the rest, works by relaying audio through a premium account. That account can be banned at any time, and the legal risk is obvious, so I wouldn't copy it. What's worth taking is its growth structure.
Who it's for: open-source maintainers who have something that "costs real money and people want" (free model calls, API quota, download bandwidth, compute) and want the project to get both stars and a reachable audience.
Who it's not for: anyone trying to go head-to-head with another music client; anyone who can't live with copyright gray areas, or who isn't willing to pay to run the backend themselves.
How to do it:
- Moving this funnel to your own project: keep core features free and open source, but host the most expensive part (hosted APIs, models, bandwidth) on your backend with per-account limits. Verification requires joining a Telegram or Discord; doubling your quota unlocks tasks like "star the repo, follow the author." That way, everyone who wants a bit more hands you a star and a channel you can reach them on.
- Pick one country community with strong demand and low willingness to pay: LastWave targeted India's IEM scene. Find the equivalent circle for your project, such as a interest subforum in Southeast Asia or Latin America, and show up in threads where people are already asking "is there a free X?"
- Write the feature list so it can be screenshotted: one selling point per screen, a landing page to match, answers to "is it safe, is it legal?" in an FAQ, and a VirusTotal screenshot. Creators can copy your list and post it straight away.
How to get users: target-country interest subreddits and freebie subreddits like r/androidapps; local tech creators on X, Facebook, and Instagram; amplify via language-specific daily charts (LastWave spent 16 days on the Kotlin daily chart).
When to move before it's too late: there's no rush, and this play doesn't depend on the category's heat. But if you're set on building a lossless music client, the window has mostly closed.
What would show I've misread this: (1) If LastWave's lossless backend goes months without being banned or taken down and stars keep rising, gray backends last longer than I assumed and the category still has room. (2) The reverse: if the backend gets cut and stars and downloads stop with it, its value rested almost entirely on that backend, and this play only works while "free scarce resources" is on offer. (3) If someone runs "quota for stars" in another vertical and hits thousands of stars in a month, the mechanism is stronger than what I calculated from LastWave.

Clash-Projects/LastWave-Native: a third-party Android YouTube Music client with "free lossless"
Research date 2026-11-06. Repo github.com/Clash-Projects/LastWave-Native, landing page lastwave.app, lossless addon backend lastwaveaddons.clashprojects.qd.je. GPL-3.0, Kotlin. Author Ajisth Singh (GitHub ajisth69, India, joined 2025-10, 901 followers).
Bottom line
LastWave took off because it gives lossless away for free: the author runs his own backend (pulling FLAC through his own streaming premium account, descended from the ClashFLAC project by August) and plugs "free 24-bit FLAC + bit-perfect USB DAC output + AutoEQ" into a mature open-source YouTube Music client base (code from Metrolist / InnerTune / SimpMusic). It hits Indian in-ear monitor (IEM) audiophiles who want lossless without paying for Apple Music or Qobuz. Users come from Reddit subs like r/iemlndia, r/androidapps, and r/MorpheApp, short videos from Indian tech creators on X, Facebook, and Instagram, and piracy resource hubs like FMHY. Stars are a side effect: the lossless addon requires verification through the author's Telegram or Discord, and then asking people to star the repo and follow the developer (4 tasks in total) raises the daily allowance from 500 songs to 1000. It's a ready-made star-and-community funnel, but compared with peers, the stars it brings in are smaller than you'd expect (see section 4). The category is already crowded: by summer 2026, Indian developers alone had produced a batch of clients like BitChord, Echo-Music, and Convx, all also built around "lossless modules," and LastWave sits mid-pack.
1. Data
- Stars (data card + our GitHub repo_profile, 11-06): 2,542 stars, 151 forks (11-06; API lookup shows 2,576 so far); gain_7d 222, prev_7d 308, cooling now; fork/star ratio about 6%.
- Star curve (trendshift.io/repositories/197973,9-7 through 11-6, total +2,249): before 9-7 it had only about 300 stars. Several peaks: 9-14 +76, 9-15 +86 (v4.1.0 release, #2 on the Kotlin daily chart); 9-25 to 9-29 kept climbing, 9-28 +243, #1 on the Kotlin daily chart (9-23 had just shipped the v4.2.0 lossless addon, and 9-28 two more X recommendation posts appeared that day); 10-20 +83 (Kotlin #8, same day the Instagram account dailyfindsdev posted a Reel). On most other days it gained about 20–40 per day. 216 merged PRs over 61 days, but trendshift counts only 3 contributors, so it's mostly the author pushing code via PRs.
- APK downloads (GitHub Releases API, 11-06, all assets combined, including multi-ABI builds, so on the high side): about 492k in total. Before 3.4.0 each release had only 200–400 downloads; 3.4.1 (9-1) alone reached 15k, 4.0.0 (9-8) 38k, 4.3.1 (10-18) 123k, 5.0.0 (10-30) 81k. The real surge came in late August to early September, earlier than the star peak. The third-party APK site Appteka has 41,890 downloads for v3.3.1 alone, and piracy resource sites like ApkMagic and PaidShitForFree are also reposting it.
- Community channels (11-06 verified): Telegram @clashprojects 8,485 subscribers, @MaterialYouApp 2,075; Discord "LastWave" 1,858 members, 227 online.
- Same organization: LastWave-Desktop (Flutter, created 9-10) 972 stars, gain_7d 148; LastWave-Jam 19 stars.

| VxMusic(vxmusic.in) | Android (own site) | 2026 | Claims 11K+ users (unverified) | Built on the SimpMusic core, also pitched as 'pure lossless', closed source |
| YouTube Music Premium / Apple Music / Qobuz / Deezer | Big-company features | — | — | Proper lossless streaming costs money; Indian users on r/iemlndia discuss using a VPN to buy Deezer cheaply (the thread 2026-03), and this is exactly the demand LastWave absorbed |
Bottom line: plenty of others are doing the same thing, at the same time, for the same crowd. LastWave is neither the first nor the biggest.
3. How users came in (growth tactics)
- Reddit audiophile / free-stuff communities (confirmed; this is where the traction started): 8-30 r/MorpheApp, 'Qobuz or any Hi-Fi Streaming alternative', where someone says 'after finding this app I cancelled all my subscriptions… LastWave (Lossless FLAC support)'; 9-1 r/androidapps, 'Alternative music streaming app with lossless quality', where someone links the repo, saying it streams and downloads Qobuz lossless with YouTube as fallback; 9-2 r/iemlndia and 9-11 r/musicpromotiontechs each have a 'Free High-Res Music Streaming App' post (indexed by trendshift; from the titles it looks self-posted, not verified); 9-18 r/androidapps has someone asking how to download it. Afterwards r/headphonesindia, r/PiracyArchive and r/foss had people recommending it unprompted. The timing lines up with downloads climbing from hundreds to 15k in 3.4.1 (9-1).
- Recommendations from Indian tech creators on X, Facebook and Instagram (confirmed): on X, @leviackermanft (9-28, four images listing the features, with the addon link in the replies) and @Heisenberg_7771 (9-28, an Indian account calling itself an audiophile), which added +243 stars that day; @Techjunkie_Aman 9-30 promoted the desktop version; @itz_ahmedx 10-13. On Facebook, creator Mrtechinside (Mani Sandhu, 350k followers) posted 'This Music App beats every other app out there!', with 169k views and 799 interactions, plus a comment thread 'How this Music App is free?' (post date not verified). On Instagram, dailyfindsdev (an account that reposts GitHub projects, self-described as AI-generated) posted a Reel that added +83 stars that day, 10-20. There are also YouTube Shorts titled 'Why I switched to LastWave'. I found no evidence of paid promotion either way.
- Stars for quota, plus forced funnel into private channels (confirmed; this is the star-growth mechanism): from v4.2.0 (9-23) onward, lossless was split into a separate addon. To get the addon URL you verify through @lastwave_bot, which requires joining the Telegram channel @clashprojects, or you use one-click Discord authorization to join the server. Each user gets 500 addon per day by default, and completing 4 'GitHub tasks' on the dashboard (starring repos, following developer accounts) adds 500 more (lastwave.app/addon/: 'Tasks include starring the repository's, and following the developer accounts'). That explains why the Telegram channel reached 8.5k and Discord 1.9k, and why star growth clearly stepped up after 9-25. The author's stated reason: someone bulk-downloaded playlists of 1,000–10,000 songs and got the author's premium account banned.
- SEO landing page + APK-site reposting (confirmed): lastwave.app is titled 'Lossless (FLAC) YouTube Music Client' and has FAQs on safety and legality, plus a VirusTotal 0/92 screenshot. Searching 'LastWave' in Brave puts it at the top. APK sites like ApkPure, Appteka, ApkMagic and PaidShitForFree repost it on their own, and the Chinese aggregator codekk also lists it.
- GitHub trending (confirmed; it amplifies rather than drives): it hit the Kotlin daily trending list for 16 days, peaking at #1, which brought some on-site GitHub exposure. It never made the all-language trending list.
4. Why it took off
- Real demand, price-sensitive audience: the Indian IEM community keeps asking where to listen to lossless for free (one r/iemlndia thread: 2026-06 upvotes, 81 comments, 90), while YouTube Music only offers lossy Opus. LastWave is one of the few apps where you install it and get Qobuz-grade FLAC for free. The reactions use phrases like 'cancelled my subscription' and 'free 24-bit/192k is crazy'.
- The backend is the moat, and the risk: lossless doesn't come from client code. It comes from the author paying for accounts and running their own backend (built as ClashFLAC 8-14, stopped updating at 8-31, later merged into the LastWave addon). Other InnerTube clients' code can be forked, but this backend can't be forked, which is what sets it apart from pure clients like Metrolist and Convx.
- Packed with audiophile features: bit-perfect USB DAC output (using Decent USB Audio Driver), AutoEQ, Dolby Atmos, a signal-chain / DSP scoring page, and Liquid Glass UI. These are made for screenshots, and the X recommendations mostly just copy the feature list.
- Stars are collected through a mechanism: the star-for-quota setup gets users who want more lossless to star it almost by default. By comparison, its star-to-download ratio is about 5.2‰, similar to BitChord (5.3‰), higher than Echo-Music (1.5‰), and lower than Convx (12.5‰). So the mechanism is effective but not outsized. It isn't the main source of stars; real user volume (about 490k APK downloads) still is.
5. Differentiation
Compared with pure clients like Metrolist, Convx and vivi-music, it adds an officially hosted, free lossless backend plus a full set of features for DAC and IEM users. Compared with BitChord, its lossless is a centralized service the author runs with per-account quotas, while BitChord uses open pluggable modules and community addons. The differentiation is real and is why the Reddit and X posts took off, since their first line is always 'free lossless'. But it's not exclusive: BitChord did the same thing in the same period at twice the scale, and even BitChord users were posting on X that 'bitchord with last wave's addon also plays lossless'.
6. Visibility and copycats
- Visibility: it's spreading inside small circles. Indian audiophile and free-software communities (Reddit, Telegram, the FMHY ecosystem) and a few Indian tech creators. No mainstream tech press coverage. No revenue issue either; it only takes donations (BMC, UPI, GitHub Sponsors, Telegram Stars).
- Copycats: fhes-tus/LastWave-native (a fork of 9-4 with a changed description). New similar repos keep appearing in waves: rgsekai/sekai-tune, devxrohan/SMusic ('Multi-Source Modules'), LunarTune, DollBloom (forked from BitChord), rootscripts/riff, Yigder/Prism, and others. There are also small repos that write lossless addons for BitChord specifically (layzxz/bitchord-flac-addon 9-7, juanjoblol/bitchord-hires-addon 10-10). 'YouTube Music client + lossless module' has become a crowded copycat lane.
7. Takeaways
- Use a scarce resource that costs real money (backend bandwidth or accounts) as the hook, allocate it with quotas, and trade quota for stars, follows, or group joins. The cost stays controlled, and it builds GitHub recognition and Telegram/Discord private channels you can reach users through anytime. It works in other verticals too: free API quotas, model calls, downloaders.
- Wrap a forked base as an audiophile edition: write the feature list so it screenshots well, pair it with an SEO landing page and safety FAQ, and post in communities where willingness to pay is low but demand is high (the Indian IEM scene).
- Pitfalls: high legal and platform risk (relaying lossless through premium accounts gets accounts banned, and then the backend breaks), and the core value sits on one centralized backend.
8. Uncertain
- Which lossless source it uses (Qobuz, Tidal or Deezer; a Reddit comment mentioned Qobuz), and whether it runs on the author's own accounts or a public hi-fi API, are not verified.
- I couldn't find the exact date the GitHub tasks went live (the landing page says 'Last updated Oct 2026'), so I can't separate how much of the 9-25 star surge came from the mechanism versus the X recommendation posts.
- Whether the early Reddit posts were self-posted by the author (the page 403, body not readable), the publish dates of the two Mrtechinside videos, and whether they were paid.
- The GitHub stargazer timeline API is unavailable (403/404), so the curve uses numbers from trendshift.
