# Big-company launches make you wait in line. Here's one you can run right now: how OpenDuet got two thousand stars in a dozen days, and why this trick is no longer new

**What it is** An open-source, self-hostable "Claude Duet alternative": it sends you a proactive briefing, sorts your email, works in the background, and asks before acting. It's a template for an AI agent, and in reality CopilotKit's own OpenBot platform with a new skin.

**Why it took off** Claude Duet has a waitlist, and this gave people a version they could run right away. The CEO's launch tweet directly quoted Anthropic's announcement. Combined with the audience built by the company's 38.5k-star main repo, plus X, the blog, and videos, it hit #3 on Trendshift's TypeScript daily chart within two days.

**C** **How you could follow** Don't chase this one. Wait for the next time a big company launches a waitlisted product: prepare a base you can reskin in a few days, have the repo up the same day, ship within a week, and do what it did poorly (fully local, no cloud key) or target a different audience (Chinese-language, a specific profession), with distribution channels ready for launch day.

C grade: the play is public and repeatable, but the result depended mainly on launch-day distribution (an earlier personal repo with the same name has only 31 stars). Claude Duet's wave is already two weeks old, same-name repos are crowded, and daily adds have dropped to twenty or thirty. Following this one isn't worth it. What you can learn is how to do the next one. Circulating in small circles

Data (updated daily) · Repo created 2026-10-21 · 1,985 stars · 7 days +260

GitHub · stars

Data 2026-10-28 → 2026-11-08 (12 days, 12 observations). Points before 10-28 come from deeply / archive backfill, not every day has one

The day Anthropic launched the waitlist-only Claude Duet, CopilotKit, which makes agent frontend frameworks, had already built an "open-source version" repo. It shipped 6 days later and got over a thousand stars in two days. The play is fully public and anyone can copy it. The catch: at least five other people did the same thing that same week, and apart from the ones with a company behind them, almost none took off.

### A quote tweet

On Oct 21 2026, Anthropic released a research preview of Claude Duet: an agent that comes to you proactively, tells you what needs your attention, keeps working while you're away, and asks before acting on your behalf. Only Pro/Max users can apply, and there's a waitlist. The Hacker News post got 568 points and 537 comments.

At UTC 19:43 that day, CopilotKit created a GitHub repo called OpenDuet.

On the afternoon of Oct 27, CopilotKit CEO Atai Barkai posted a tweet that directly quoted @claudeai's Duet announcement video. It opened with "Introducing OpenDuet," then "Self-hostable, proactive AI agents that you own and works with ANY agent harness," then four feature bullets: generate and edit assets, human approval before acting, computer use, and works across phone, web, and chat channels. It closed with "Clone this template and customize it however you want. Enterprise-ready." The company account retweeted it, and the website blog, a YouTube demo video, and LinkedIn all went up the same day.

What people reading the tweet saw: on one side, Anthropic's original, which you have to wait for; on the other, something you could clone and run right now.

### What it actually is

The README reads like a product spec: a morning briefing each day; email, calendar, and Slack split into "needs you" and "can wait"; background work on its own computer (browser, working directory, shell); it shows you messages, payments, and deletions and waits for your OK before sending or deleting; passwords go in masked fields and stay out of the chat; self-hostable and model-swappable. The opening shows a phone interface screenshot and a demo video, not install commands.

But the README also admits one thing: OpenDuet today runs on OpenBot (CopilotKit's own open-source agent platform), with the OpenDuet name, bots, and skills layered on top, and all customization lives in one example folder. In plain terms, it's an OpenBot skin.

To run it you still need an Intelligence key from CopilotKit (threads and memory are stored in its cloud). The free tier allows 1,000 interactions per organization per month, and beyond that it charges per developer. The README and blog both end with "Talk to our engineers." The repo is MIT, TypeScript, and 71 commits, almost all by one person (GitHub, 11-06).

This dependency drew complaints too. Under the company account's tweet on Oct 31, one user replied that they had spent hours on Fedora without getting it installed, because it requires "paying for a UI key."

### How the stars climbed

| Date | Cumulative stars | What happened |
|---|---|---|
| 10-21 | 0 | Repo created the day Claude Duet launched |
| 10-27 | — | CEO quote-tweets the official launch; +438 that day (Trendshift) |
| 10-28 | 788 | +866 that day (Trendshift), #3 on the TypeScript daily chart and #14 overall |
| 10-29 | 1,351 | Gained 563 in one day at peak |
| 10-31 | 1,633 | Added a "Trendshift #3" badge to the README. The company account pushed another round, quoting @RoundtableSpace's post (about 266k followers) on an "open-source, self-hosted Claude Duet." |
| 11-03 | 1,846 | Daily adds dropped to sixty or seventy |
| 11-06 | 1,962 | +29 that day, 257 forks |

(Daily GitHub star counts, starting from 10-28. The two trackers cut days differently, so the peak falls between 10-28 and 10-29.)

Three things stand out. First, most of the traffic came in the 48 hours after launch, driven by the CEO's tweet and the company account, not organic search. Second, after making the trending list, adding a badge and pushing again brought a small extra wave, but it only lasted two or three days. Third, it never hit Hacker News. CopilotKit's past Show HN posts got single digits to a dozen points, and this company's home base is X. The fork-to-star ratio of about 13% is normal for a template repo and suggests people really are cloning and modifying it.

### Five other "open-source Claude Duet" clones the same week

CopilotKit wasn't the first, and it wasn't the best.

| Project | Launched | Stars (approx.) | How it's done |
|---|---|---|---|
| Anil-matcha/open-duet | 2023-year-old repo, 10-22 renamed | 6,800 | An individual developer renamed an old multi-agent project and tweeted "Claude just launched Duet, here's the open-source version." +123 on the renaming day, and people called out the rename as a star grab. |
| Studio1-OSS/OpenDuet | 10-22 | 31 | Launched 4 days before CopilotKit under the same name. The author tweeted "I open-sourced Claude Duet!" No company distribution behind it, and it didn't take off. |
| alexsergivan/kwant | 10-22 | 85 | Single-file Rust, labeled "Claude Duet / Dots / Grok Bot alternative" |
| modelflare-ai/AnyModelBot | 10-27 | 2,700 | Launched the same day as OpenDuet, name-checks Grok Bot, Dots, and Duet, and connects to WeChat and Feishu. 11-03 gained 1,145 in a day and has already overtaken it. |
| CopilotKit/OpenDuet | 10-21 repo created, 10-27 launched | 1,962 | The subject of this article |

A few others built SEO landing pages around "Claude Duet alternative," and third parties on YouTube made videos titled "100% free, self-hosted open-source Claude Duet alternative."

The most telling row is Studio1-OSS: same name, earlier launch, same pitch, 31 stars. The name and timing get you in the door, but what really determines how much you collect is how many people see your launch that day.

### This company's pipeline

OpenDuet is CopilotKit's fifth run of this this year. The base is always the same OpenBot. Each time a big company launches a "proactive agent with its own computer," it swaps the skin and launches an "Open + big-company product name":

- OpenTag (June, targeting Claude Tag): about 1,300 stars

- OpenBot (August, targeting Grok Bot): about 10,200 stars

- OpenMuse (September, targeting Meta Muse): about 6,200 stars

- OpenDots (late September, targeting OpenAI Dots): about 6,400 stars

- OpenDuet (late October, targeting Claude Duet): about 2,000 stars

In a reply under the launch tweet, the CEO himself said these templates together have over 20,000 stars, and "there's a reason we can ship templates this fast." Each launch uses the same playbook: a CEO tweet quoting the big company's announcement, the company account retweeting, a blog post plus video, and a badge plus another push once it charts. The main repo, CopilotKit, has 38.5k stars, and its existing followers are the base each cold start builds on. Stars don't make money directly. They funnel people toward the cloud service that requires an Intelligence key and toward enterprise consulting.

OpenDuet is the weaker one in this pipeline. Two likely reasons: "Open + big-company name" has now been used five times in a month, so readers have seen it; and the name Duet is shared by at least three repos, which splits the attention.

### If it were you

**One-line take** : "When a big company's new product opens only a waitlist, ship a self-hostable open-source version that runs right now" is a real playbook. But OpenDuet itself came late, and the payoff depends mostly on how many people you can reach on launch day. Worth studying for the playbook; following this one isn't worth it.

**Who it suits** : people who already have an agent base they can quickly reskin (or a general UI template), who have a few thousand followers on X, or who have an existing project with stars to funnel traffic from. CopilotKit's numbers came about half from its main repo, which has 38.5k stars.

**Who it doesn't suit** : solo indie devs with no distribution channel who hope the name alone gets them found. Studio1-OSS used the same name, launched earlier, and got only 31 stars. Also not a good time to build "yet another open-source Claude Duet": Duet has been out for over two weeks, there are at least three repos with the same name, and daily gains are falling.

**How to do it** :

- Don't chase this one; wait for the next. Have a base ready that can be turned into any "proactive agent" look within days. Next time a big company launches something, especially waitlist-only, region-locked, or membership-gated, create the repo that day and ship within 3 to 6 days.

- The name is the search term, but check first whether someone already has it. The OpenDuet lesson: when many repos share a name, the attention gets split.

- Write the README as a product pitch: lead with a demo video and phone screenshots, describe features as "what this means for you," and put install steps near the bottom.

- Do the part OpenDuet got wrong: OpenDuet depends on CopilotKit's cloud key, and some people couldn't get it running because of that. A truly fully local version, one command to run, no cloud key needed, is the easiest differentiator to explain in this category.

- Pick a different audience: AnyModelBot, which connects to WeChat and Feishus, is an example. A proactive agent built for Chinese or Japanese users, or for a specific profession (sales, recruiting, lawyers), is easier for people to remember than yet another general-purpose version.

**How to get users** : quote the big company's official tweet in your launch post, with a first line like "open-source, self-hosted XX"; release the demo video the same day; when you hit Trendshift or GitHub's daily chart, immediately add the badge and post again; get a few AI news accounts to repost (OpenDuet was reposted by @RoundtableSpace, whether it was paid is unverified). HN reacts only lukewarmly to "open-source XX" posts, so don't bet on it.

**When to move** : create the repo within 48 hours of a big company's new product launch, and ship within a week. After two weeks, same-name repos crowd the field.

**What would show you read it wrong** : ① at the next big-company proactive-agent launch, CopilotKit's new "Open + name" repo gets fewer than 1,000 stars in two weeks, meaning the playbook as a whole is worn out; ② a personal repo with no company behind it gets thousands of stars from the "fully local, no cloud key" angle, meaning differentiation matters more than distribution, so build the differentiator instead of racing on speed; ③ big companies start open-sourcing or freely releasing their own agents, and the "no waiting in line" reason disappears.

## CopilotKit/OpenDuet: why it got traction

> Source: GitHub · Research day 2026-11-06 · Data card gh_CopilotKit/OpenDuet

### Bottom line

OpenDuet is an "open-source Claude Duet" from CopilotKit, the company behind the agent frontend framework (CopilotKit with 38.5k stars, AG-UI protocol). It was created the same day Anthropic launched **Claude Duet** (2026-10-21, waitlist-only) and shipped 6 days later. It reached about 2k stars by **riding the big company's name and buzz, plus the company's own X/blog/community distribution, plus a well-worn "Open + big-company product name" playbook** . The product itself reskins the company's OpenBot platform to look like Duet. It is essentially a customer-acquisition showcase for CopilotKit Intelligence (the paid persistence/memory layer). It isn't the most successful of this wave, and is actually one of the weaker results of CopilotKit's playbook.

### What it is

- Describes itself as an "open-source proactive AI agent template": sends a briefing each morning, sorts email/calendar/Slack into "needs you" and "can wait," works in the background on its own computer (browser + /workspace + shell), shows you and waits for approval before sending messages, paying, or deleting, masks passwords so they stay out of the chat, is self-hostable, and swaps models. ([README](https://github.com/CopilotKit/OpenDuet))

- The README admits: "OpenDuet today runs on OpenBot (CopilotKit's open-source self-hosted agent platform), with the OpenDuet name, Bots, and skills layered on top." All customization lives in one folder, `openbot/examples/openduet`. In other words, **it is a skin/example of OpenBot** .

- Depends on CopilotKit Intelligence (threads and memory), which requires getting a key. The free hosted tier allows 1,000 interactions per organization per month, with developer-based pricing above that ([pricing page](https://www.copilotkit.ai/pricing), [blog](https://www.copilotkit.ai/blog/introducing-openduet)). Both the README and the blog end with a "Talk to our engineers" enterprise consulting link.

- MIT, TypeScript; nearly a single contributor (jerelvelarde with 71 commits, another with 3; GitHub API 2026-11-06).

### Competitors: who else does the same thing

**The source is a big-company feature, not an empty market.** In the second half of 2026, several big companies launched "proactive/always-on agents with their own computer" in succession: Grok Bot, Meta Muse, OpenAI Dots, Claude Duet (10-21), and Manus Cue. OpenDuet is one of the open-source copycats of Claude Duet, and not the earliest one.

| Name | Where | Launched | Scale | How OpenDuet differs |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Claude Duet(Anthropic) | Big-company features | 2026-10-21 research preview, waitlist | HN 568 pts; covered by Reuters/MacRumors/CNBC | original; hosted, Claude-only, queues, Pro/Max users. OpenDuet's pitch is no waitlist, self-hosted, any model |
| Anil-matcha/open-duet | Open source | 2023-year-old repo, renamed 10-22 to ride Duet | 6,803 stars (mostly accumulated early on, 10-22 today +123) | Solo dev, Python, multi-agent team (lead agent dispatches). Renamed to chase the hype; commenters called it out as star-farming by renaming. Name nearly identical to OpenDuet |
| Studio1-OSS/OpenDuet(Arindam Majumder) | Open source | 2026-10-22 | 31 star | Tweeted "I open-sourced Claude Duet" 4 days before CopilotKit with the same name; open models + Mastra/Composio; no company distribution, barely took off |

| CopilotKit's own: OpenBot / OpenDots / OpenMuse / OpenTag | Open source | 2026-08-17 / 09-29 / 09-15 / 06-26 | 10,240 / 6,424 / 6,212 / 1,301 star | Same base, each targeting a different product: Grok Bot, OpenAI Dots, Meta Muse, Claude Tag. OpenDuet is OpenBot with a Duet skin |

### Growth: where users come from

1. **Riding a big-tech launch (confirmed)** : the repo was created the day Claude Duet launched; the CEO's launch tweet directly quoted @claudeai's announcement video; the second round of promo used "open source, self-hostable version of Claude Duet". Searching "Claude Duet alternative / open source" puts OpenDuet near the top, and third-party YouTube videos titled "100% Free and Self-Hosted Open Source Alternative to Claude Duet" exist ([YouTube](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J0tfcjHLOlk)). Claude Duet is waitlist-only, so "you can run it yourself now" has real pull.

2. **Company channels all at once (confirmed)** : CEO personal account + company X account, website blog, YouTube, LinkedIn (plus a third-party LinkedIn account, "TRENDING: CopilotKit CEO introduces OpenDuet"), Discord community, daily.dev. CopilotKit has a main repo with 38.5k stars and an AG-UI ecosystem; its existing followers are the cold-start base.

3. **Big account amplification (confirmed)** : @RoundtableSpace (about 266k followers, crypto/AI news account) posted "open-source, self-hostable Claude Duet", and the company account quoted it. Whether it was a paid partnership is unverified. Whether the timing matches the 10-28 single-day peak is unverified.

4. **Chart-driven re-promotion (confirmed)** : after reaching Trendshift TS daily #3, it immediately added a README badge and pushed another round of tweets.

5. **HN not used (confirmed)** : our hackernews database has no OpenDuet post. CopilotKit's previous Show HNs (OpenBot 12 pts, OpenTag 4–15 pts) didn't gain traction either. This company's home turf is X.

6. **Reddit content farms (partly confirmed)** : r/AISEOInsider has posts like "Open Duet: NEW FREE Claude Duet Alternative!", but the title says Open Duet, so it's unclear whether it refers to this CopilotKit project or Anil-matcha's.

### Why it's working

- **Timing** : Claude Duet launch (HN 568 pts) + waitlist only = lots of people want it but can't use it. An "open-source version" has ready-made search demand and talking points.

- **Brand and name** : "OpenDuet" is itself a search term. CopilotKit, a known agent frontend company, makes it more credible than personal clones (Studio1-OSS 31 stars).

- **Assembly-line playbook** : since June, CopilotKit has run OpenTag→OpenBot→OpenMuse→OpenDots→OpenDuet in succession. The base is the same OpenBot, so swapping the skin takes only days. Every launch uses the same template: "Open + big-tech product name" + CEO tweet + blog + video.

- **Product looks complete** : phone/web UI screenshots and demo video, approval flows, masked password fields, morning briefing, onboarding checklist. The README reads like a product brochure, not technical docs, and looks polished (the CEO's tweet specifically highlighted the "beautiful UX/UI").

- **Where the money comes from** : not selling OpenDuet itself. Running it requires a CopilotKit Intelligence key (1,000 free interactions/month, paid beyond that), and both the README and blog link to enterprise consulting. The stars funnel traffic to the CopilotKit platform and build the brand.

### What's the differentiation, and is it why it took off

- Versus Claude Duet: self-hosted, any model, any agent harness (AG-UI), data stays in your own DB, no waitlist. This is the only point that got spread around, **which is why** — but every clone is pitching the same difference.

- Versus other open-source clones: the real difference is "company-backed + polished frontend UI + the OpenBot platform behind it", plus CopilotKit's own distribution. That's why it outperformed Studio1-OSS.

- But the differentiation isn't big enough: AnyModelBot, launched the same day, already passed it with 2.7k stars; Anil-matcha's renamed old repo is at 6.8k; even CopilotKit's own OpenDots/OpenMuse are at 6k+. OpenDuet hit 1.96k on day 16, and daily growth has dropped to single digits to twenties. That suggests the "Open + big-tech name" trick has been used a fifth time within a month, with diminishing returns, in a crowded same-name lane.

- User feedback: someone failed to install on Fedora and complained they had to pay for a UI key (referring to the Intelligence key) ([X reply](https://x.com/CopilotKit/status/2116579403585183951)). Depending on the company's cloud service funnels users to the company, and it's a turn-off for self-hosting users.

### How visible it is

Word of mouth in niche circles: dev X (the CEO, the company account, RoundtableSpace reposts), the Trendshift daily chart, daily.dev, a few "Claude Duet alternative" SEO articles and YouTube videos. No mainstream outlet covered it on its own, and it didn't hit the HN front page. No revenue data (it isn't a paid product).

### Copycats

At least 5 "open-source Claude Duet" clones appeared within a week of the Duet launch: Anil-matcha/open-duet (renamed, 10-22), Studio1-OSS/OpenDuet (10-22), alexsergivan/kwant (10-22), modelflare-ai/AnyModelBot (10-27), plus several small repos recommended on Trendshift. Strictly speaking, CopilotKit is one of the followers, and not the first to use this name.

### What others can borrow

- When a big company launches a waitlisted, region-locked, or members-only product, same-day release of an "Open + product name" runnable open-source version uses the name for SEO. The launch tweet directly quotes the official tweet to borrow its traffic.

- Turn a general base (OpenBot) into a platform that can swap skins in days. Each time a big company launches something new, ship an "open-source version", harvest hype in rolling waves, and funnel everyone to the paid cloud service (Intelligence).

- The README reads like a product pitch: demo video and phone screenshots first, a feature table framed as "what this means for you", and when it charts, add a badge and push another round.

### Still unclear

- Which posts (CEO tweet, RoundtableSpace, YouTube) drove the 10-27/28 stars over two days can't be separated. The exact timing of the RoundtableSpace post and whether it was a paid promotion are unverified.

- No data on how many stars converted to actual deployments or Intelligence signups.

- Which project the r/AISEOInsider "Open Duet" post refers to is unclear.
