# DeepSeek's official search only accepts its own key. One person patched the gap the next day: where dsh-free-search's 920 stars came from

**What it is** A free search plugin for DeepSeek Harness: it replaces the built-in search that only accepts the official key, plugging in more than twenty free or paid engines, and automatically falling back to the next one if one fails.

**Why it took off** The built-in search only accepts DeepSeek's official key, so anyone using a gateway or free models hits a failure on every search. It came out earliest and was updated most often, becoming the top search plugin in the plugin directory, and rose alongside the DSH and "use DSH without a key" trends.

**C** **How you can follow it** Don't fight it for the DSH search slot. Learn the play: within 48 hours of a new platform going open source, fill the gap where "official capabilities are tied to the vendor's account," make it zero-config with automatic fallback, then keep up with every platform update.

C grade: this slot already has a winner-take-all first place; the forks that renamed themselves didn't take off, and you won't get stars by copying. What you can learn is the "seize a platform gap + high-frequency maintenance" play, but it bets on the next platform and the next gap, so it isn't a ready-made opportunity. Data 2026-10-09 → 2026-11-08 (31 days, 31 observations). Points before 10-28 come from deeply / archive backfill, not every day has one

On the second day DeepSeek open-sourced DeepSeek Harness (DSH), a developer named "暮迟" created a repo to add free search to it. 84 days later, the plugin has 920 stars on GitHub and 93k npm downloads a month, and it's the top search plugin in DSH's plugin directory. It never got media coverage, and nobody mentioned it on X. Below: how it held that spot, and what you can take from it if you want your open-source project to earn stars.

### A user with a zero balance

In 2026 Sep 28, a Windows DSH desktop user opened an issue on the dsh-free-search repo (#46). He was blunt: he had installed the plugin and configured Bing, but when the model called `web_search`, it still went to DeepSeek's official search, "and my DeepSeek balance is zero, so the search just fails." He also read through the plugin source, pinpointed the lines where the check failed to let the plugin take over, and even wrote the fix.

The whole answer to this project is in that episode. DSH's built-in `web_search` only accepts a DeepSeek official API key; anyone using a gateway, a third-party free model, or with an empty balance gets a failure on every search, and the agent replies "unable to access the internet." The official repo's discussion board (Discussion #1715) had people reporting the same 401. The dsh-free-search README opens with this exact scenario: "Without a DeepSeek official key (or if you don't want to use one)… then the built-in search will inevitably fail."

### What it is

A DSH plugin (npm package `dsh-free-search`, MIT license, JavaScript). Once installed, it replaces the built-in `web_search` backend: by default it uses keyless DuckDuckGo, Bing, and SearXNG, plus anonymous free tiers from search vendors like Exa, Tavily, Parallel, and You.com. From mainland China it defaults to Bing, elsewhere to Parallel; if one engine fails, it automatically falls back to the next. If you have keys, it can also plug in Perplexity, Baidu Qianfan, Kimi, Alibaba Bailian, Doubao, and Zhihu.

Then it kept growing: a web settings page, one-click testing of all engines, per-key cooldowns, `web_fetch` for pulling page content, platform search for GitHub / Bilibili / V2EX / Reddit, and one-click deep research. It went from "a free search" to DSH's all-in-one search suite.

The author is DDDMUC (暮迟). The GitHub account was registered in July 2024, has only this one repo, lists the University of International Business and Economics website on its profile, and has 15 followers. Nothing suggests a company or backing behind it.

### How well it's growing

| Metric | Metric | Sources |
|---|---|---|
| GitHub stars | 10-17 442 → 11-06 920,20 days to double | GitHub, logged daily |
| New stars over the last 7 days / the prior 7 days | +207 / +143, single-day peak +37 (11-06) | Same as above |
| npm monthly downloads | August 11k, September 29k, October 79k | npm download stats |
| npm daily downloads | 10-09 about 2,500 → 10-30 onward 4,600–5,600 | Same as above |
| Rank in the DSH plugin directory | #26 among the 4,669 plugins with download data; #1 in search | awesome-dsh-plugin,11-05 |
| Version | Debuted 08-15, 96 versions through 11-06, latest 0.9.33 | npm |

Stars are still accelerating, but downloads say more: 90k+ in a single month (how much of that is CI, mirrors, or auto-updates can't be seen from outside; real install count is unknown).

### Where users come from

**First, DSH itself.** DSH is the official open-source project, about 274k stars, and gained another 27k between 10-09 and 11-06. Since 0.2.1, DSH has had a built-in plugin marketplace on its Plugins page, and the community directory awesome-dsh-plugin lists 9,111 plugins; both sort by stars and downloads. Whatever sits at the top gets installed more, which brings in more stars, so the top search spot keeps pulling in new users. It was listed in the directory 08-16.

**Second, the "DSH without a key" wave (inferred; the timeline lines up).** Another plugin, dsh-our-free-model (gives free access to DeepSeek V4.1 Flash and Kimi K3 once installed), 10-09 had 4,454 stars, and by 11-06 had 62,222. People in this group have no official key, so the built-in search is bound to fail. Over the same period, dsh-free-search's daily downloads rose from about 2,500 to about 5,000.

**Third, the name is the search term.** Searching "dsh-free-search" or "DeepSeek Harness free search plugin" on the web ranks it first; searching "dsh-search" on GitHub ranks it second.

**Fourth, one Bilibili video.** "deep seek harness free web search plugin," posted in Aug 26, 3 min 25 sec, about 4,400 views, with the repo link in the description. Whether the author posted it themselves is unverified.

**Fifth, search vendors came knocking.** Parallel staff submitted PRs fixing UA and streaming parsing; You.com, Outcrawl, and Serply submitted PRs to plug their own engines in; one user, qikairo7, personally contributed the one-click research and vertical-source search features. For a search API vendor, an entry point with tens of thousands of downloads is a free distribution channel, so they're willing to put in effort; the more they contribute, the more complete the plugin gets.

What I didn't find: mentions from large X accounts (0 posts), media coverage (the Zhihu, Phoenix, and QQ News "DSH plugin roundups" all cover a different search plugin, ModSearch), or paid promotion. The README has the usual line: "If this plugin helped you, consider giving the repo a ⭐."

### Why this one and not the others

The DSH search plugin space is crowded. Dozens show up on GitHub, and the vast majority have under 100 stars:

| Competitors | Scale | What's different |
|---|---|---|
| DSH built-in search | Installed by default | Only accepts a DeepSeek official key |
| liustack/modsearch | 944 stars, about 60k on npm over 30 days | The author has another project with 4.8k stars, and media coverage names that one; but it's a general search bridge for various agents, not native to DSH, and has fewer downloads than dsh-free-search |
| anysearch-dsh (vendor official) | 681 stars, 16k on npm | Only its own single backend |
| dsh-web-search-free, dsh-web-search-pro | 61 stars and 86 stars, each with over 6 thousand npm downloads | Few engines, slow updates |
| Single-vendor plugins (-exa, -brave, -tavily…) | From single digits to a dozen-odd stars | Unusable once that one vendor goes down |

It wins on four things, the first two matter most:

1. **Early.** DSH is 08-13 open source. It 08-14 set up the repo and 08-15 went up on npm, catching the first wave of plugin hype and directory listings.

2. **Kept working.** DSH changes its API often (0.2.0-rc and 0.2.1-rc both touched the search interface; issues #49, #80, #91, and #107 in the repo are all this kind), and each change requires the plugin to be fixed. It shipped 84 versions in 96 days, 44 of them in October alone. Most similar plugins stalled in August, so users naturally drifted over to it.

3. **Zero config.** It works right after install, picks a default engine by region, and falls back automatically on failure. Users only care about one thing: can it find results.

4. **Winner-takes-all ranking.** Once it became the top search plugin, the directory and marketplace kept pulling in new users on its behalf.

The features all came later. What mattered from the start was "no key, arrived early, kept working." The features were piled onto a place people were already using, not the other way around. Because of that, the features are easy to copy, and people have already forked and renamed it to republish: `@copylee/dsh-free-search` (30 days, 1.1k downloads), `dsh-union-search` (its npm description literally says "renamed from dsh-free-search", 3.4k downloads). The copycats didn't copy the ranking or the update cadence, so neither took off.

### If it were you

**The takeaway:** Building another search plugin inside DSH has no realistic shot. What's actually worth learning from this project is the playbook: when a new platform goes open source, close the gap between what the official defaults offer and how users actually use it within 48 hours, then keep up with the platform's updates more diligently than anyone else.

**Who it's for:** Solo developers who move fast and are willing to watch a new platform's changelog daily; people who can read a plugin interface the day the platform goes open source; ideally people already using the platform who ran into the same pitfall themselves.

**Who it's not for:** Anyone trying to go head-to-head in the DSH search slot (the top spot already has 90k monthly downloads and vendor backing, and the forks haven't taken off); anyone who wants to ship once and walk away (these plugins live or die by how they track the platform's API, and a month of neglect means falling behind); anyone hoping to make money from it (open-source plugins trade in stars and reputation, and there's no revenue here).

**How to do it:** Two routes. One: find the next gap like this one inside DSH. Look for places where the official default is tied to its own service while lots of users run gateways and free models (beyond search, check whether capabilities like scraping, voice, image, or memory also only accept official keys; this is inference), then build a drop-in replacement that works on install and falls back automatically. Two: wait for the next major platform to go open source (a new agent harness, a new editor plugin system), read its plugin interface the day it opens up, ask "which built-in capability is locked to an official account?", and ship a first version within 48 hours. Name it with the words users actually search for, like `dsh-free-search`, so it's instantly clear who it's for, what it does, and that it's free.

**How to get stars:** Get into the directory and plugin marketplace first, since that's where the ranking starts. Put the failure scenario on the first screen of the README ("without an official key, built-in search is guaranteed to fail") so people who hit the wall recognize it immediately. Leave a working workaround as a comment on the same issue or discussion in the platform's official repo. Treat search API vendors as contributors and leave room for them to integrate; they'll submit PRs and spread the word for you.

**When to move:** This DSH wave is still rising (it gained another 27k stars in a single month), so if you're looking for the next gap inside DSH, the sooner the better; once the official side makes a capability stop requiring a key, the matching gap disappears that same day. Platform-switching plays have no hard deadline, but they only work in the first week or two after a platform goes open source.

**Signs you've misread it:** ① DSH officially lets the built-in search support any model or gateway, and dsh-free-search's daily downloads drop by more than half. That would mean it was feeding on a one-time gap, not a lasting need. ② DSH star growth clearly slows and marketplace download growth stops. The position in this ecosystem is no longer worth much. ③ A big company or well-known author ships a native DSH plugin in the same category and overtakes it in downloads within a month. That would mean "early plus diligent" can't beat reputation, and neither can you.

A closing line for anyone building open source: the bigger the platform, the more certain the gaps it leaves behind. The real competition isn't about features. It's about who gets there first and who stays.

## DDDMUC/dsh-free-search: why it took off

> Research date 2026-11-06. Data sources: our GitHub database (repo_day / repo_profile), the GitHub API, the npm registry and npm downloads API, awesome-dsh-plugin.com/plugins.json (2026-11-05 edition), Jina search and page content, and x-radar.

### One line

DeepSeek's official DeepSeek Harness (DSH, ~274K stars), open-sourced in Aug 13, ships with a `web_search` that only accepts a DeepSeek official API key. Anyone using a gateway or a third-party free model hits 401 the moment they search. dsh-free-search is the earliest and most actively updated patch for that gap: install it and it works, no key needed, and it wires 27+ search engines into one fallback chain. Its traction is rising with the DSH ecosystem and the "use DSH without a key" trend.

### 1. What it is

- A DSH plugin (npm package `dsh-free-search`, MIT, JavaScript) that implements DSH's `ctx.web` WebSearchProvider seam and replaces the built-in `web_search` backend.

- Free without a key by default: DuckDuckGo, Bing, SearXNG, and AnySearch, plus anonymous quotas from vendors like Exa, Tavily, Keenable, Firecrawl, Parallel, and You.com. Bing is the default in mainland China and Parallel elsewhere. With keys configured, it also supports Perplexity, Baidu Qianfan, Kimi, Alibaba Bailian, Doubao, Zhihu, and built-in search from OpenAI, Gemini, and Claude.

- Later additions: auto routing, multi concurrent merging, per-key cooldown, multi-key rotation, a web settings page, web_fetch, platform_search (GitHub, Bilibili, V2EX, Reddit…), domain_search (41 vertical sources), and one-click research. It has grown from "a free search" into DSH's full search suite. (README, GitHub)

- Author "暮迟" (DDDMUC), China. The homepage points to the University of International Business and Economics website, and the account has 15 GitHub followers and was registered 2024-07. An individual developer; no company or backing is visible.

### 2. Growth data

- GitHub stars: 10-17 442 → 11-06 920 (our database), doubling in 20 days. +207 in the last 7 days, +143 in the first 7 days, and a single-day peak of +37 (11-06). A live GitHub API check on the day showed 942 stars and 58 forks.

- npm downloads (closer to real usage): August 11k, September 29k, October 79k. Last 30 days (10-07–11-05): 93,185 downloads. Daily downloads rose from about 2,500 at 10-09 to 10-30 and have held steady at 4,600–5,600 since. (api.npmjs.org)

- Ecosystem ranking: awesome-dsh-plugin lists 9,111 plugins, 4,669 of which have npm download data. By downloads over 30 days, dsh-free-search ranks #26 overall and #1 among search plugins, ahead of modsearch (58k) and the official AnySearch plugin (15k).

- Iteration pace: 84 days, 96 versions published (44 in October alone), currently at 0.9.33. The author has made 230 commits. 100 issues and PRs, many from users, some from search API vendors.

### 3. Competitors

The DSH search plugin space is crowded. Searching GitHub for "dsh search / dsh web search / dsh tavily / dsh searxng" turns up dozens of repos, and most have fewer than 100 stars.

| Competitors | Form | Launched | Scale | How it differs |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| DSH built-in web-search-deepseek | Big-company features | 2026-08-13 ships with DSH | Installed by default | Only accepts the DeepSeek official key; using a gateway or free model means 401 (quote from Discussion #1715 in the official repo) |
| liustack/modsearch | Open source / npm | 2026-02-22 (predates DSH, built for general coding agents) | 944 stars, npm 30 days 61k (npm API) / 58k (directory) | The author has a reputation from modlens (4.8k stars). Zhihu and QQ News's "16 hot DSH plugins" roundups feature it. It is positioned as a cross-agent search bridge, not a native DSH provider. |
| anysearch-team/anysearch-dsh | Vendor official plugins | 2026-08-13 | 681 stars, 16k on npm | Only promotes the vendor's own AnySearch, a single backend |
| @fffangchenghao/dsh-web-search | npm | — | npm 8.2k | Free-search + fetch bundle |
| MochiNek0/dsh-web-search-free | Open source | 2026-08-20 | 61 stars, 6.8k on npm | Nearly the same name, fewer engines, and the author's energy is split with dsh-desktop |
| anweat/dsh-web-search-pro | Open source | 2026-08-13 | 86 stars, 6.4k on npm | Multi-engine + caching |
| Single-backend plugins (dsh-web-search-exa / -brave / -searxng / dsh-tavily / dsh-bing-search…) | Open source | Mid-August | From single-digit to a dozen-plus stars; npm from a few hundred to 1.5k | Single provider only |
| dsh-search-failover / dsh-search-mcp, etc. | Open source | August | Single-digit stars | Same idea (fallback pool), but no sustained maintenance |

### 4. Growth tactics (where users come from)

1. **The DSH ecosystem itself is the biggest traffic source (verified)** . DSH is an official open-source project with about 274k stars. From 10-09 to 11-06 it gained another 27k stars, and the dshmarket plugin hub gets about 1M npm downloads over 30 days. The plugin marketplace (dsh-market, built into DSH's Plugins page) and the awesome-dsh-plugin directory both rank by stars and npm downloads, so "more stars → higher rank → more installs → more stars" is a self-reinforcing loop. It 08-16 is listed in the directory, under the browser category. 0.2.1

2. **The free-model trend created hard demand (inferred; the timeline fits)** . dsh-our-free-model (install it and use DeepSeek V4.1 Flash and Kimi K3 free, no key needed) went from 10-09 4,454 stars to 62,222 stars 11-06. These users have no DeepSeek official key, so the built-in search is certain to 401. Over the same period dsh-free-search's daily downloads grew from about 2,500 to about 5,000, and its star growth also accelerated. The README opens with exactly this scenario: "No official key / using a gateway like opencode-go… built-in search will inevitably fail."

3. **The name is the search term (verified)** . Searching Jina for "dsh-free-search" or "DeepSeek Harness free search plugin" ranks it first. On GitHub, searching "dsh-search" puts it second, behind a marketplace plugin.

4. **Bilibili video (verified, small scale)** . BV1zA8f6gE9k, "deep seek harness free web search plugin." Posted 2026-08-26, runs 3 min 25 sec, about 4,430 views. The description links to this repo. Whether the author posted it is unverified.

5. **README star request** : "If this plugin helped you, please give the repo a ⭐." A standard practice.

6. **Community and vendor contributions turned it into a distribution channel for search APIs (verified)** . A Parallel employee (georgeatparallel) submitted PRs fixing the UA and SSE parsing. You.com (brainsparker), Outcrawl (heydryft), and Serply submitted PRs adding their own engines. qikairo7 alone contributed research, domain_search, language pools, and other large features. Vendors are willing to contribute for free because the repo gives them access to tens of thousands of downloads, which in turn widens its coverage.

7. Not found: X account mentions (x-radar search for "dsh-free-search" or "DDDMUC" returned 0 results), media coverage (roundups of DSH plugins from Phoenix News, Zhihu, Tencent Cloud, and cnblogs don't mention it; they feature ModSearch), or paid promotion.

### 5. Why it took off

- **The official gap was bound to appear** : the built-in search is tied to the official key. As more DSH users go through gateways or free models, search failures 401 become something everyone runs into (Discussion #1715, this repo's issue #46, #86).

- **Early entry** : the repo was created the day after DSH open-sourced (08-14), and published to npm on the third day (08-15), catching the first wave of plugin interest and directory listings.

- **Zero configuration** : install and it works. The engine is chosen automatically by region, failures fall back automatically, and "search never fails outright." That directly answers users' main question, "Will it work?"

- **Maintenance intensity far beyond its peers** : 96 versions in 84 days. DSH itself changes its API often (0.2.0-rc, 0.2.1-rc removing searchProviderId, see issues #49, #80, #91, #107), and each change had to be fixed. Most similar plugins stopped at August; this one kept up with every upgrade, which is why it kept its users.

- **A winner-takes-most ranking mechanism** : the marketplace and directory rank by stars and downloads, so the top search plugin keeps pulling in new users.

### 6. Differentiation

Compared with the built-in search, it doesn't require an official key. Compared with single-backend plugins, it is a full fallback pool: free engines, anonymous quotas, and optional paid keys, plus Chinese localization (Bing zh-CN, Baidu, Zhihu, WeChat, Toutiao). Compared with modsearch, it is a native DSH provider with a settings page and a `/free-search-engine` popup, which is smoother for Chinese users. Most of these differences were **piled on later** . Early on, what mattered was "free without a key, early, and always working." The feature set grew because users and vendors kept adding to it, not because features came first and users followed. The differentiators are easy to copy (someone has already forked and renamed it). The real moat is ranking and maintenance pace.

### 7. Visibility and copycats

- Visibility: **chatter within a small circle** . It is well known in the Chinese DSH community (first in directory search, with a Bilibili video), but almost nobody outside the DSH ecosystem knows it. No media or X accounts with reach have written about it. It's a free plugin, so no revenue is involved.

- Copycats: copylee711/dsh-free-search (GitHub fork, npm `@copylee/dsh-free-search`, 30 days, 1.1k downloads); drscrewdriver/dsh-union-search (npm description original text "renamed from dsh-free-search", 3.4k downloads); delef/dsh-free-web-search, dsh-keyless-search, dsh-bing-search and other plugins with the same name and idea.

### 8. What others can learn

- Watch for the gap between a new platform's **official default capabilities and how users actually use it** (here: the official version only accepts its own key, while users are running gateways and free models). Within 48 hours of the platform going open source, ship a zero-config patch and take the top spot in the directory for this category.

- The combo of "keyless engine + anonymous vendor quotas + automatic fallback" can be copied to any agent harness (Claude Code, Codex, OpenCode, pi...) as "keyless search for agents."

- The maintenance rhythm of keeping up with platform API changes is itself a moat. Make the plugin a channel vendors want to plug into proactively, and features will keep growing.

### 9. Uncertain

- It's unclear how many npm downloads come from CI, mirrors, and auto-update checks. The actual number of installs is unknown.
