Papermorph: Opus 5.5 can ship a video in one go, and someone turned a whole book out of it. 1,300 stars in a month
What it is An open-source plugin for Claude Code that turns textbook PDFs into narrated, animated web lessons with quizzes, and can also turn stories into paper-puppet animations and books into documentaries and vertical short videos.
Why it took off It launched when "one sentence, one video" was at its hottest with Opus 5.5. The author posted that they had pushed it to an entire book, with an online bookshelf you could click through. Every two weeks after that the author added a new format and posted again, and Chinese-speaking communities picked it up, bringing two more waves of growth.
CHow you could follow it Don't build another generic PDF-to-course tool; several already exist and all sit around a hundred stars. Pick a use case it doesn't cover (picture-book PDFs, language courses, memorization-based exam prep, Chinese and Japanese textbooks), have a playable finished bookshelf ready, and within two weeks of the next model release post it to r/ClaudeAI and X using the same title pattern.
- Data (updated daily) · Repo created 2026-10-03 · 1,383 stars · 7 days +345
GitHub · stars Data 2026-10-09 → 2026-11-08 (31 days, 31 observations). Points before 10-28 come from deeply / archive backfill, not every day has one
An author who has not disclosed their real identity posted a Claude Skill that turns PDFs into animated web books to r/ClaudeAI on the 5.5th day after Opus 11 launched, and it reached 1,300 stars in a month. It has fewer stars than the other explainer-video skills of the same period, but the playbook is clear and worth learning: post on the hottest phrase of the moment, pair it with a finished product people can click through, then add something new every two weeks and post again.
A post riding the buzz
2026 Oct 3, Reddit user u/AccountlKiller posted to r/ClaudeAI under the title:
Opus 5.5 can one-shot a video, so I pushed it a little bit further: a Skill that turns PDF into an animated, interactive web book
The first line of the post reads "Everyone knows Opus 5.5 can write a video in one go. I tried it, it blew me away, so I wanted to see how far I could push it." The post included a 75-second demo video, a link to an online bookshelf and the GitHub repo (MIT license). Opus 5.5 had only been out for 11 days at that point (09-22), and "one sentence gets the model to produce an animated video" was the hottest topic on Reddit and X. The title didn't start a new topic; it took the line everyone was already discussing one step further.
By 10-07 the post had 631 net upvotes (per the createmotion.io repost page). In Oct 4, the AI news account @RoundtableSpace, with a video, relayed the story on X. The repo gained 6, 58, 61, 174, 149, 85, 55 stars a day over the first days, peaking at #2 on the Trendshift chart.
What it is
A Skill for Claude Code and OpenCode. After installing, type /papermorph; it finds the PDFs in your project, works out what kind of book it is, suggests which chapter to start with, and offers a recommended option at each step. It produces four outputs:
- Course: turns a textbook PDF into a chapter-by-chapter web course where formulas and diagrams change step by step alongside the narration, with quizzes in each chapter that check the math itself rather than comparing strings;
- Picture book: turns a story into a paper-puppet animation, with a "tap things on screen" mini-game for kids who can't read yet;
- Documentary and vertical short: built from public-domain woodcuts, maps and charts; a documentary can be re-cut into a set of phone-format vertical shorts;
- Playable pages: for example, Orwell's "Shooting an Elephant", where the reader holds the rifle.
Outputs are all static web pages, with no server, database or accounts needed. Each chapter can be exported as 1080p MP4 with subtitles, and a whole book can be packaged as a SCORM bundle for school course systems. Narration uses the free Edge TTS or Kokoro. The expensive part is the model: the README says an illustrated physics chapter costs roughly 10 to 18 USD in model fees.
Stars came in waves
| Timeline | What happened | Daily star gain |
|---|---|---|
| 10-03 ~ 10-08 | Reddit launch post, relayed by @RoundtableSpace | +58 ~ +174 |
| 10-09 ~ 10-23 | No new moves | +7 to +19 per day |
| 10-24 ~ 10-25 | Second Reddit post; the author opened an X account the same day and posted three demos: math, physics, fairy tales | +35, +51 |
| 11-02 ~ 11-06 | New on the shelf: documentaries and vertical short films. 11-03 Chinese X account @DDJCXX (硅基废话) recommends them, alongside CSDN tutorials and Chinese YouTube videos. | +27 ~ +80 |
Source: Trendshift daily data, GitHub. 11-06 is over 1,300, with more than 170 forks; the npx skills add install count is 548 (skills.sh, 11-06). The fork-to-star ratio is about 13%, which is not low for a new repo of the same period and suggests people are actually running it.
第二篇帖子的标题换了个讲法:「Update to Papermorph: All I wanted was a few math worksheets for kids. Opus 5.5 made it wild.」(我只是想给孩子做几张数学练习卷,结果 Opus 5.5 做疯了。)一个普通家长、一件小事意外做大,这种故事在 Reddit 很好传。
During the two quiet weeks with no new moves, stars dropped back to a dozen or so a day; each new post brought another spike. The curve suggests growth came mostly from the author pushing out posts one after another, not from the project building momentum on its own.
Why this one and not the others
In the same month, dozens of "let the model animate it" skills appeared, and quite a few of them have more stars than this one. It stood out on its own because of these things:
- It clearly says how it's different from the others.Where others make one video, it makes a whole book: a 68-chapter elementary algebra course and a 40-chapter linear algebra course where you can rotate a 3D plane. The whole book shares one style, has quizzes, and saves progress. "Turn a PDF into an interactive web book" can be passed on in one sentence.
- The demo can be opened right away.People who see the post click into the bookshelf and play, with nothing to install and no spending of 10 to 18 dollars. For a tool that is expensive to run, this alone nearly decides whether anyone bothers to star it.
- It keeps shipping.Math → physics → fairy tales → documentaries → vertical short videos → playable pages, roughly one new format every two weeks, and each release gives the author another batch of post material. The author also cuts the documentaries into vertical shorts for X and YouTube Shorts, with the bookshelf link in the bio.
- It answers "will the official product just do this?" up front. The first item in the README FAQ is "How is this different from Claude Motion?": Claude Motion does animated explainers, Papermorph does whole books.
But be realistic: 1,300 stars is not big in this category. Timing decides the scale, not positioning.
Who it's competing with
| Project | stars (early November) | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| lemomo-ai/lemo-opuscar | About 12,600 | 66 film-style templates for making movies |
| alchaincyf/huashu-art-motion | About 6,400 | Chinese motion graphics |
| Vincentwei1021/anything2explainer | 3,066 | Give it a topic and it produces an explainer video with narration |
| Alisa0808/vox-director | 2,650 | Vox collage-style explainer videos |
| academa-labs/manimgx | 2,550 | Manim math animation engine for agents |
| HeyChengC/vibe-knowledge-film | 1,067 | Chinese knowledge short videos, aimed at Douyin |
| assafkip/claudemy | 613 | Give it a topic and it generates a course |
| ai-azhou/pdf-to-interactive-web | 90 | Same thing, about three weeks late |
The projects that actually do the same thing (book or PDF into an interactive course) all sit around a hundred stars: besides the one with 90 stars above, Trendshift's similar projects include a few "book-to-interactive-course" skills at 76 to 108 stars. Redoing what it did would most likely get you this same result. The big category of single explainer videos was already crowded. On the official side, Anthropic has Claude Motion, and Google has video overviews in NotebookLM (inferred; I did not verify each one).
If it were you
C: Learning from it is not worth much.Several followers already do the same thing, and they all stalled around a hundred stars. The Opus 5.5 video wave it rode has also been over for more than a month. What's worth taking is its posting playbook, for the next big model release.
Who it suits: people who can ship a watchable, playable product within one or two weeks of a model release, and who already have a concrete use case (making practice worksheets for their kids, courses for students, trailers for their own books). Able to make a demo video of 30 to 75 seconds, and willing to post an update every two weeks.
Who it doesn't suit: people who want to build a generic version of "PDF to interactive course" (five or six of those already exist, and the first one took the name); people who want to build a single-explainer-video skill (a dozen projects with 1,000 to 12,000 stars are already there); people who can't make a demo that opens without installation.
How to do it: either pick an audience it doesn't cover, or build the parts still unfinished on its roadmap. Don't build a generic version. A few directions:
- Its first roadmap item, "turn an illustrated picture-book PDF into an animated book," isn't built yet. Build only that and do it very well;
- Change the kind of material: language courses, programming courses, and memorization-heavy courses like medicine or bar exam prep, none of which are on its shelf;
- Change the ecosystem: Chinese textbooks, or Japanese study guides taught in Chinese or Japanese, posted in the matching communities;
- Whichever you pick, put three to five finished products on the shelf first so people can click in and play. Put an animated GIF on the first screen of the README, and write an FAQ that clearly explains how it differs from the official feature and from Papermorph.
How to get users: follow its rhythm. Post the first one in a busy, relevant community like r/ClaudeAI, with a title that rides the hottest line of the moment ("X can do A, I pushed it to B"), attached to a video under 75 seconds plus the shelf link. On the day you post, @ a few big AI news accounts on X. After that, every time you ship a new format, post an update with a different story; cut the finished work into vertical shorts for X and YouTube Shorts, with the link in the bio. Run a separate round in Chinese communities.
When to move: within two weeks after the next major model release. Papermorph posted on the 11st day after Opus 5.5 launched, so that is how long the window is. Before that, have the product and demo videos ready, and start building the moment the model drops.
Signs you've misread it: ① before mid-December, ai-azhou/pdf-to-interactive-web or another book-to-interactive-course project has itself gained 500 stars, meaning the niche still has room, and the thing to do is the same thing, but fast; ② Papermorph itself holds at +30 or more per day through December without new reposts, meaning it has turned from "timing" into "demand," and then it's better to go around it and build for a different audience; ③ Anthropic or Google ships an official feature for "upload a book, generate a whole interactive course," and then this path is closed to open-source projects.

Papermorph (DozenTwelve/Papermorph) research report
Research date 2026-11-06. Channel: GitHub. Data comes from our GitHub database (repo_day, including daily data carried over from deeply starting 10-09), the GitHub API, Trendshift, skills.sh, and web retrieval via Jina / Exa. The original Reddit posts were blocked by anti-scraping, so post content was obtained indirectly from repost sites (createmotion.io, agihunt, aibriefs, promppy, pulseaugur).
One line
Papermorph is an open-source Agent Skill (MIT license) for Claude Code / OpenCode: it turns textbook PDFs into web lessons with narration, animation, and quizzes chapter by chapter, turns fairy tales into paper-puppet animated films, and turns a book into documentaries and vertical short videos. The output is pure static web pages, and it can also export 1080p MP4 and SCORM course packages.
Conclusion: It took off because of timing plus one Reddit post. Opus 5.5 (released 2026-09-22) set off a wave of "generate a video from one sentence," and the author posted on r/ClaudeAI on 10-03 titled "Opus 5.5 can one-shot a video, so I pushed it a little bit further." The next day, X account @RoundtableSpace reposted it, and in the first 6 days it picked up about 580 stars. Growth after that came from the author steadily updating the "bookshelf" samples (math → physics → fairy tales → documentaries). Each update post, each X account opened, and each pass through the Chinese-language community brought another bump. What really sets it apart from others is "making whole books, not one video," which gave it recognition among a pile of explainer-video skills. But star count isn't driven by that; it's driven by timing. What the author hopes to earn from it is custom production work for publishers and schools.

II. Competitors
Nothing is exactly the same, but it sits in a very crowded lane behind Opus 5.5: skills that make narrated videos with code-drawn animation. Three tiers by distance from it:
1. Explainer / animation skills (the most numerous, and generally with more stars than it has)
- Vincentwei1021/anything2explainer: 3,066★, repo created 59 days ago, takes a topic and outputs a narrated explainer video (GitHub repo)
- lemomo-ai/lemo-opuscar: 12,613★, created 2026-09-26, 66 film-style templates (GitHub repo, figure cited from the anidoodle report)
- Alisa0808/vox-director: 2,650★, makes Vox-style collage explainer videos
- academa-labs/manimgx: 2,550★, a Manim math / 3D animation engine for agents
- Vincentwei1021/video-talkcraft: 2,118★, talking-head videos with motion graphics
- cth9191/animate: 1,562★, programmatic canvas animation
- alexgreensh/anidoodle: hand-drawn style animation skill
- Chinese-language: HeyChengC/vibe-knowledge-film (1,067★), andyhuo520/vibe-knowledge (515★, repo created 9 days ago), alchaincyf/huashu-art-motion (about 6,370★)
- All of the above make single videos.
2. Book or PDF to interactive course (truly the same thing, and all very small)
- ai-azhou/pdf-to-interactive-web: 90★, repo created 15 days ago, after Papermorph
- Trendshift's "similar repos" list includes a few more: Claude skills that turn books (EPUB/PDF) into interactive intro courses (108★), turn PDFs / books / papers into quizzable study webpages (76★), turn PDFs into animated demo videos (90★), and turn long articles into immersive reading versions (395★). I have not verified the repo names for these.
- assafkip/claudemy: 613★, generates a course from a topic
- Textbook sites with 3D / interactive elements (finished products built by hand or with AI, not tools): smithjohn78390/tongjiang-lab (1,609★), nathanliow/atlas-of-physics (389★)
3. Big-company features
- Claude Motion (Anthropic's official animated explainer feature): the Papermorph README FAQ explicitly addresses the difference: "Claude Motion makes animated explainers; Papermorph makes whole books: consistent style across chapters, graded quizzes, saved progress, and a static site you host yourself."
- Google NotebookLM's video overviews and Google's Learn Your Way interactive textbook experiment: the current status of these products was not verified in this research and is written from memory.
3. Growth tactics (evidence)
- Reddit r/ClaudeAI original post (confirmed, the main source): 2026-10-03, u/AccountlKiller posted "Opus 5.5 can one-shot a video, so I pushed it a little bit further: a Skill that turns PDF into an animated, interactive web book", with a 75-second demo video and a link to the online bookshelf. Reposts on createmotion.io (timestamp 10-03 04:32Z), agihunt, and promppy (Korean, 10-03) also picked it up. 10-24's aibriefs coverage said "the original post got far more attention than expected." The title borrowed the then-hottest "Opus 5.5 one-shot video" narrative.
- Relayed by X main account @RoundtableSpace (confirmed): 2026-10-04 01:15Z, posted "A developer built Papermorph, a Claude skill that turns a PDF into an animated, narrated, interactive web book…", with the video, linking back to Reddit. This lines up with the two peaks of +10-05 and +10-06 174 and +149.
- Trendshift ranking (confirmed): from 10-03 to 10-08 it stayed continuously in the top 25 of the Trendshift HTML list, peaking at #2. GitHub's official trending only includes repos about 60 days old, so it never made that list.
- Second wave: the author posts their own content (confirmed): 10-24 posted an update to r/ClaudeAI: "Update to Papermorph: All I wanted was a few math worksheets for kids. Opus 5.5 made it wild." The same day the author opened the X account @DontStarve11 ("AnotherGameDoge · Papermorph", pinned with "My first tweet") and posted demos in quick succession: math, physics, and fairy tales. 10-24 and 10-25 grew by +35 and +51.
- Posting the output itself as content (confirmed; reach effect not verified): the author cut documentaries from the bookshelf into vertical short videos and posted them to X and YouTube Shorts, e.g. the Foucault "Madness and Civilization" series and "The Pandemic" 6 episodes, with descriptions saying "Watch the series and the full documentary: papermorph.diamonddoge.org/…". There are also Instagram Reels and a TikTok hashtag page "Papermorph: The AI That Animates Your Textbooks" (author not certain).
- Chinese-language reposts (confirmed, timing matches the November third wave): 2026-11-03 X Chinese account @DDJCXX "硅基废话" posted "Want to run a knowledge account but don't want to make animations page by page yourself? There's an open-source Skill on GitHub called Papermorph…". Around the same time there was a CSDN tutorial "Papermorph core workflow in-depth tutorial," a Chinese YouTube video "AI can edit video now? Use Skills to automatically turn textbook examples into science animations," and a Taiwanese Facebook video from "數位敘事力期刊." 11-02 to 11-06 daily gains of +36 to +80, but it can't be determined which post drove each day.
- Skill directory and aggregator long tail (confirmed): skills.sh (548 installs), skillsllm.com, nicheloom, readmex, pulseaugur, reposts on r/ClaudeWorkflows and r/LovingOpenSourceAI.
- "1,000 stars" credits and roadmap in the README: social proof plus ongoing updates, a very common practice.
- Channels not checked: HN (Algolia search returns nothing), a formal Product Hunt launch, paid promotion, media coverage. Our x-radar corpus also does not include related tweets.
4. Why it took off
- Timing: after the Opus 5.5 release (09-22), "the model writes a whole animated video in one shot" became a hot narrative on Reddit and X, and dozens of video skills appeared at the same time (see the first tier of competitors). Papermorph's title openly says "Opus 5.5 can one-shot a video, so I pushed it a bit further," directly riding that traffic.
- Live demos you can click: it has an online bookshelf with 68 chapters of elementary algebra, 40 chapters on linear algebra with a draggable 3D plane, plus physics, fairy tales and documentaries. Readers just click the link and play, no install needed. For a tool whose output eats tokens, where running one chapter yourself costs 10 to 18 dollars, this matters a lot.
- The story is easy to tell: "I just wanted a few math worksheets for my kid, and Opus went wild." An ordinary parent or developer identity, plus an accidental-viral angle, travels well on Reddit.
- Keeps shipping: every week or two a new format gets added to the bookshelf (physics → fairy tales → documentaries → vertical shorts → interactive pages). Each addition gives new material to post, which produced the 10-24 and 11-02 second-wave growth spikes.
- Low barrier: one line,
npx skills add, installs it, and/papermorphwalks you through the recommended options; narration uses free Edge TTS / Kokoro.
5. Differentiation
- A whole book, not one video: multi-chapter consistency via
style.json; graded quizzes and chapter exercises that check the math itself rather than string matches; per-book saved progress; a unified player with pause, step, speed, and subtitles, with the UI available in 5 languages including Chinese, English, Japanese, Russian, and Arabic. - Exits for education: SCORM packages load directly into an LMS; each chapter can be exported frame by frame as 1080p MP4 plus .srt subtitles; output is a static folder with no server dependency; the engine version is independent, so books don't break when the engine upgrades.
- One source, many formats: the same book can become a documentary, a vertical short, or a scroll story.
- Self-check pipeline: contact sheets, overlap and blank-frame checks, end-to-end tests, and "director review" against already-passing books, split across multiple sub-agents, with a different model choosable at each step.
- Is this why it took off? Partly. Its star count (1.3k) is well below several general video skills from the same period (3k to 12k), suggesting that the "education / whole book" positioning alone doesn't reach the largest audience. But the positioning gave it one sentence that spreads on its own ("turn a PDF into an interactive web book") in a crowded lane, and it gave it a path to revenue. The official /work page states B2B customization outright: "For publishers, schools and studios," with a paid trial of one chapter at about 3 minutes, then pricing per chapter or episode, plus a one-time service to set up a pipeline for your team with training. The team describes itself as "a small web development team in Fukuoka, Japan." The open-source skill is a client acquisition tool here, and the money comes from the production service.
VI. How visible it is
- Spreading in small circles: it reached the front page of r/ClaudeAI twice; @RoundtableSpace on X relayed it once, and the Chinese account @DDJCXX relayed it once; various AI news aggregators and CSDN carried reposts. No mainstream media coverage and no disclosed revenue. The author's X account was only opened at 10-24.
- Copycats: several small repos already do "PDF / book to interactive learning webpage," such as ai-azhou/pdf-to-interactive-web (90★, created 10-22 around the same time), plus the book-to-interactive-course skills with around 100★ in Trendshift's similar-repo list. The big explainer-video lane was already crowded long before, though those can't really be called copies of it.
VII. What others can borrow
- The title borrows the hottest model narrative of the moment ("X can do A, I pushed it to B"), posted in a high-density community like r/ClaudeAI with a finished product you can click into.
- Using a "sample bookshelf" as a portfolio: every new format is fresh material for a post, which means another round of secondary growth.
- Posting the tool's output (documentaries, vertical shorts) directly to short-video platforms for traffic, with the bookshelf link in the bio.
- Monetizing an open-source tool through "we'll make it or set it up for you": no SaaS, charge a trial fee first and quote afterward. A good fit for generation tools with high token costs.
- Proactively write an FAQ on "how this differs from the official feature (Claude Motion)", answering "will the big players kill you?" before anyone asks.
8. What's still uncertain
- Exact upvote and comment counts for the two Reddit posts (originals blocked by anti-scraping).
- In the November third wave, how much did Chinese reposts, short videos, and directory sites each contribute?
- Does the /work custom service have real orders, and what's the quoted price?
- Are the Papermorph videos on TikTok / Instagram posted by the author or by third parties?
- The GitHub profile name "Ted Kaczynski" is a joke; the author's real identity is not public.
