63k stars, earned by gating stars: how a free model plugin outgrew its host

What it is A plugin for DeepSeek Harness (dsh) that gives free access to a set of frontier models with no login and no API key, where the main models are paid for by the author.

Why it took off After dsh went open source, the plugin ecosystem boomed, and new users wanted free, key-free access most. It is the only one in its category that works right after install, keeps up with upstream changes, and has self-funded main models. It also made the main models require "GitHub login and a Star", so usage turned into Stars that don't disappear.

CHow you could follow Don't go head-to-head with dsh. Learn the playbook and, in the first 30 days of the next new plugin-based open-source framework, build the free plugin its newest users need most. Use "login + Star" as the gate for the good tier, and an in-plugin announcement as your broadcast channel.

Grade C: the approach is clear and learnable, but this track is already taken by dsh, which has a self-funded channel and an author who keeps up with upstream changes. Followers can't get that. Only the mechanism is usable, and it requires waiting for the next platform event.

A developer named Nefert built a plugin for DeepSeek Harness (dsh) that gives free access to DeepSeek V4.1 Flash and Kimi K3,43 right after install. It gained 63k stars in a day, and last week it grew faster than dsh itself. The features aren't the main reason. At least ten people did the same thing before it, and they all stalled at a few hundred stars. What made it take off was one rule: if you want the best models, go Star the repo on GitHub first. Below: how it works, whether the move can be copied, and where copying it leads.

The Oct 5 announcement

On the night of Oct 5, 2026, dsh-our-free-model pushed a notice to every machine that had it installed, titled "v1.5.0: EAC channel adds GitHub authorization (log in + Star required before use)". The first line of the body gives the reason:

EAC is a metered relay channel whose capacity scales with this repo's stars (every 1 Stars adds 1.5 to the account pool). Tying access to Stars lines up the people who use it with the people who keep it running.

The flow is simple: in settings, click "Login with GitHub", open the browser authorization page, log in, click Star, return to the app, and you're set. "No copy-pasting needed." If you haven't starred it, the page has a "I've starred it, check again" button. One more line: "Unstarring will stop access. The server re-checks every 12 hours." It was enforced forcibly two days later (10-07).

Before this, the repo was created on Sep 24, and Oct 9 showed 4,454 stars (no earlier daily figures). After the gate opened, it added 1,000 to 3,000 stars a day: on 10-17 it reached 19k, on 10-21 31k (+3,167 that day, its largest single-day gain), and on 11-06 62k (GitHub showed 63,773 that afternoon).

What it actually is

dsh is an agent framework open-sourced by deepseek-ai on Aug 13, built around "everything is a plugin", with 275k stars in two and a half months (GitHub, 11-06). Using dsh means entering your own model API key, and many of these new users are students and Chinese developers who most want "free, no key".

The plugin does this in three layers:

  • Anonymous free lane: plugs the public free model pools of OpenCode Zen and Kilo into dsh by mimicking the request fingerprint of OpenCode's official client (UA, session ID encoding format, tool declarations), with no login.
  • EAC metered channel: the author runs the gateway and pays the bills, providing main models like DeepSeek V4.1 Flash and Kimi K3. The Star gate above sits in front of this.
  • Ever-growing extras: ten "free account channels" (Qoder, TRAE, Cline, iFlytek, SenseTime, MiniMax, Zhipu, etc., account pools plus auto check-in for points), aggregation of 76 providers for bring-your-own-key, a local OpenAI / Anthropic-compatible gateway (Claude Code and Codex can connect), and a Windows desktop shell.

Many parts weren't written by it. The ten account channels came whole from Jet (iJetLi)'s MIT project; the repo's NOTICE credits the source, and commit history shows the upstream merged at 10-06 a.m., which it absorbed that same afternoon, then renamed the directory from jet-hub to channel-pack the next day. The model workbench embeds yetone/magpie (31k stars). Upstream author iJetLi's own repo has 11-06 stars, against 110.

Why others didn't make this work for the same thing

WhoWhenStars (11-06)What's different
FishBottle7/opencode2dsh8-29, one month earlier389Also hooks into the OpenCode free pool, but only one lane, no flagship models, no gate
XDTrees/dsh-xdpool9-04447Pooled various free-tier quotas into one pool. Its features largely overlap with the later version, but every user has to log into each account by hand
keman-ai/dsh-opencode-zen and 5 others8-19 to 9-307–8 eachThin wrappers around the OpenCode free pool. They break whenever upstream changes its fingerprint, and nobody fixes them
AITabby/dockyard-dsh8-1577You need your own paid subscription account

The differences come down to three points, each heavier than the last:

Works the moment you install it. Rivals either wire up one lane that can drop at any time, or make you log into a dozen platforms first. It works right after install, so the first impression holds.

It keeps getting fixed. When OpenCode 10-14 switched to client fingerprint v2 and later added session-ID encoding checks 10-17, the author shipped a fix the same day both times and pushed it to everyone through the plugin's announcement feed. The five thin wrappers with 7 stars each died in exactly these moments. From 9-25 to 11-01, it pushed 33 announcements and 20 versions.

It has a lane nobody else can offer, and it sets the price of entry at one Star. The free pool only has what upstream leaves over, while EAC has the flagship models. To get the good ones, you have to Star the repo. Unstar and access expires within 12 hours. That keeps Stars from falling off, and forks are rarely needed: forks are only 2.7% of stars, versus 2% for the related opencode17dsh repo and 12% for dsh itself. That's the pattern of a project many people look at but few modify.

Where users come from

  • The author's own Bilibili videos. In Sep 25, the day after the repo was created, the uploader Nefert-zx (same name as the author's GitHub display name) posted a 2-minute 49-second video: "What? Just one plugin and DSH gives you unlimited free use of nine models including mimo 2.6". It reached 6 198k views by Nov. Several follow-ups in the same playlist came after, such as "deepseek v4.1, kimi k3 free?" and "OFM desktop officially released". One issue claims 6 episodes total 667k views (unverified).
  • The plugin's built-in broadcast channel. The plugin has an announcement center. The author edits a JSON file in the repo, and every machine with the plugin receives it within 30 minutes, urgent ones as full-screen popups. It has pushed Star-required notices, and a "recommended projects" page that funnels users to the same author's EAC-Desktop, EAC-Pack and EAC-design-world. The wording was "if you use it, just give it a Star" and "Stars are their only paycheck." EAC-Desktop now has 2,394 stars.
  • The star count itself became the headline. Chinese accounts on X ran posts like "README claims 20 days to 15k stars" and "over 40k stars, #1 on JS weekly" (10-15 and 10-26). Zhihu, CSDN auto-tutorials and YouTube Shorts reposted it. The README displays a Trendshift daily #1 badge and a JavaScript weekly #1 badge. It never made GitHub's official trending page, which requires the repo to be about 60 days old.
  • QQ group. The README shows the group number at the top, and early-November commits updated the QR code for "group 14".

The loop runs like this: more stars → people treat it as news → newcomers install it → they want the flagship models → they Star → more stars.

Where the money comes from, and where the risk is

This kind of project is built for stars and buzz, but this one has real costs: the author is paying for EAC's model usage out of pocket. The only visible return is a sponsor card for the Beichen API, pinned at the top of the free models and EAC pages, reading "invite and get 10% cashback"; a launch-screen sponsor ad 10-19 went up and then came down. How much was spent and how much came back is not visible from the outside.

Risks are already showing:

  • The upstream could shut the door any time. The anonymous lanes rely on imitating other clients, and they've already been tightened twice; WorkBuddy and the Huawei Cloud channel 10-25 were removed entirely; and in November's issues, someone reported that the OpenCode free lane returns 403 RegionError in China, with accounts getting flagged by risk control.
  • Its reputation is being questioned. 11-01 someone opened a long issue comparing hashes file by file, arguing that the account-channel pack was copied wholesale and marketed as original (the original author is iJetLi). The NOTICE file credits them, and the MIT license makes this compliant, but the contrast of "an integrator with 60k stars, the original author with 110 stars" will get pointed at.
  • Security perception. 11-06 someone reported that Kaspersky deleted the bundled magpie-win32-x64.exe as a Trojan, and the desktop shell is unsigned.
  • The Star gate itself. GitHub's acceptable-use policies oppose rewarding engagement, and I haven't seen precedent for whether a "Star to unlock" model could be acted on by the platform (inference).

Copycats have already arrived

mu-zi-lee/magpie-our-free-model (created 10-09, 312 stars), several renamed mirrors and installers (tens of stars each), a SourceForge mirror. On npm someone squatted the unscoped name and modified the code, and the author put a warning in the README. None of the copycats comes close to its scale.

If it were you

C. The mechanism is worth learning from, but building another free-model plugin inside dsh isn't worth it. The spot is taken, the original has its own paid lane and an author who keeps racing upstream, and you'd need both money and time to catch up, and even then you'd be second. What's worth taking is the playbook, for the next platform event.

Who it suits: developers watching new agent frameworks, new editors and new plugin marketplaces, who can build the thing everyone needs most and most wants for free, and who have some advantage a follower can't get to use as the entry ticket (quota you pay for yourself, data only you have, a feature nobody else can write).

Who it doesn't suit: anyone trying to go head-to-head with it inside dsh; anyone with nothing exclusive who just relays other people's free quotas (that's the sixth 7-star wrapper); anyone who cares about reputation and doesn't want their issue tracker audited.

How to do it: in the first month or two after a new platform goes open source, find the first thing its new users get stuck on (for dsh, "you have to enter a Key"), and build a plugin that works right after install. Make the free layer generous so people find it useful on the spot. Put the best layer behind a gate, with GitHub login plus a Star as the ticket, and re-check it periodically. Build a remote announcement feed into the plugin, since your install base becomes your broadcast channel later. If you use other people's code, spell out the NOTICE and your marketing claims clearly.

How to get users: the author posts a two-to-three-minute demo video on Bilibili and X, with a title in the same style as theirs, like "What? Install one plugin and use X for free". Once you pass ten thousand stars, say so in the README and reposting accounts will spread it for you. Start a group chat and put the group number on the first screen of the README.

When to move: the window follows the platform. dsh itself was still gaining 7,988 stars a week as of 11-06, but this niche is already crowded. The best moment for this move is the 30 days after the next "everything is a plugin" open-source framework launches.

Signs you've misread it: ① after OpenCode or Kilo closes the anonymous lane, its daily star gains drop from 1,600 to a few hundred or fewer, meaning people wanted free access, not this plugin; ② GitHub takes down or acts on the "Star to unlock" repo, and the trick dies; ③ the reverse: if another plugin in the dsh ecosystem with a Star gate reaches ten thousand stars within a month, the niche isn't full yet and C should be raised.

Why Ebony-Vinyl/dsh-our-free-model worked

Channel: GitHub | Research day 2026-11-06 | Data: our github database (repo_profile / repo_day), GitHub API, repo README and feed/announcements.json, Jina search

Bottom line

It launched as the DeepSeek Harness (dsh, official repo created 8/13, 274k stars) plugin ecosystem was taking shape. It turned the hardest need, "use frontier models free without a Key", into a plugin that works on install (OpenCode Zen and Kilo's public free pools, plus EAC, a paid channel the author funds). Then it used a gate, "log in with GitHub and Star this repo to unlock the flagship models", to convert usage directly into stars. A large share of the 62k stars are stars given to unlock access, not stars given because people liked it.

1. What it is

  • A model-provider plugin for dsh. Once installed, the model picker shows a set of free models that need no login and no Key. The upstream is the free pools of the OpenCode Zen gateway and the Kilo public gateway. The plugin imitates the official OpenCode client's fingerprint (UA, session-ID encoding, tool declarations). It also includes an "EAC cost-sharing channel" with flagship models (DeepSeek V4.1 Flash, Kimi K3 and others) run on a gateway the author built and pays for.
  • Later it grew into everything: ten "free-account channels" (LobsterAI, Qoder, TRAE, Cline, iFlytek Loomy, SenseTime Raccoon, MiniMax Code, Zhipu ZCode, Gemini Code Assist, etc.; account pool + auto check-in to claim credits), 76 aggregated channels that come with their own keys, token-saving compression, a fallback chain, a local gateway compatible with OpenAI / Anthropic (Claude Code and Codex both connect), a standalone service, and a Windows desktop shell. (README)
  • Not all of the channel code is its own: the account channels are "absorbed" from Gitee user iJetLi's MIT implementation (vendor/channel-pack/NOTICE.md), and the model workbench embeds the yetone/magpie engine (31k stars) (vendor/magpie/NOTICE.md). It's an integrator, not something built from scratch.

2. Data

  • 2026-09-24 repo created; our database first observed 10-09 stars on 4,454 (day 15 of tracking); 10-13 single-day +2,972; 10-21 single-day peak +3,167; 11-06 is 62,222 stars (GitHub live 63,770). Over the last 7 days +11,430, and in the 7 days before that +14,314. It's cooling, but still gaining about 1,600 a day. (github repo_day / repo_profile)
  • A plugin growing faster than its host: the same week deepseek-ai/deepseek-harness itself gained +7,988, while it gained +11,430. The second-ranked plugin in the dsh ecosystem, anywhere-labs/dsh-desktop, has 35k stars and gained +972 this week. (github repos, 11-06)
  • Fork / star = 2.7%; in the same ecosystem opencode2 dsh is 17%, dsh-xdpool 12%, dsh itself 12%; the median fork rate for new repos with ≥5000 stars is about 11% (SCHEMA note). Many stars, few forks, which fits "starring is to unlock, not to modify the code." No suspicious-star flag was triggered.
  • The users are real: 478 issues in total, and as of November there are still a dozen-plus new issues / PRs a day, mostly from Chinese users reporting channel 403, login failures, and "where do I get authorization" (GitHub API, 11-06).
  • The stargazers endpoint returns 404 for this repo (the same goes for other dsh ecosystem repos), so the people starring day by day can't be verified.

Bottom line: at least ten people did the same thing before it or alongside it, and all of them stalled under a few hundred stars. The difference isn't "can it connect to free models." It's the three points below.

4. Growth tactics

  1. The author posted the Bilibili launch video themselves (confirmed): the day after the repo was created (2026-09-25), a Bilibili video titled "What? Just one plugin and DSH can use nine models for free without limit, including mimo 2.6 [dsh plugin Our Free Model]" got about 198k views; the uploader Jina found is "Nefert-zx," and the author's GitHub display name is Nefert. There are also several other Bilibili videos, such as "What? deepseek v4.1, kimi k3 are free now?" and "Top-tier model freeloading tool."
  2. The star gate (confirmed, the core): 10-05 v1.5.0 added a "GitHub login + star this repo" requirement to the EAC channel, and the 10-07 announcement forced it on; the server rechecks every 12 hours, and unstarring makes access lapse. The announcement, verbatim: "EAC is a collaborative paid channel whose capacity scales with this repo's Star count (every 1 Stars, the account pool +1.5). Binding usage rights to Stars aligns 'those who use it' with 'those who keep the capacity running.'" (feed/announcements.json; commit 2026-10-05 "feat(eac): a GitHub login + star gate"). The timing matches: from 10-10 after the gate, it gained 1,000–3,000 stars a day. Also, the settings page has "a Star button linking to the GitHub repo on every page," and the plugin upgrade area has a Star entry (PR #73).
  3. An install-base broadcast slot (confirmed): the plugin has a built-in announcement center; the author edits a JSON file in the repo, and every installed instance receives it within 30 minutes, with urgent-level items shown as full-screen popups. Past pushes include the forced-star notice, a "recommended projects" page (10-16: "If it's useful to you, give it a Star," driving traffic to EAC-Desktop / EAC-Pack / EAC-design-world, which now have 2,394 / 211 / 468 stars), and a Beichen API sponsor card (10-20: "invite friends for a 10% cashback").
  4. Secondary spread (confirmed; mostly not started by the author): on X, Chinese repost accounts (@xiangxiang103 10-15 "README claims 20 days to reach 15k stars"; @NFT_Chen 10-26 "already over 40k stars, #1 on the JS weekly chart"), Zhihu columns, CSDN gitblog auto-generated tutorials, Instagram / YouTube Shorts / LinkedIn reposts, findthe.tools, and llmrepos listings. x-radar's local corpus has no hits (coverage is incomplete).
  5. Chart badges: the README displays Trendshift daily rank #1 and JavaScript weekly rank #1 (10-05 to 10-11). GitHub's official trending only includes repos about 60 days old, so it never appeared there (trending_days_any = 0). Trendshift is its "chart exposure."
  6. QQ group: the README puts a QQ group 386179533 at the top, and announcements repeatedly share a QR code for the "community group 5," indicating the group has reached group number 5 or beyond.

Where the money comes back: the Beichen API sponsor card (with an invite cashback) sits at the top of the free-model and EAC pages; a splash-screen sponsor ad went up for 10-19 and was then pulled. How much the EAC channel costs versus how much sponsorship brings in is unverified.

5. Why it took off

  1. Platform event: deepseek-ai/deepseek-harness was open-sourced 8/13 with "everything is a plugin," reached 274k stars in 2.5 months; within a month the ecosystem produced over ten thousand plugins (the plugin marketplace repo claims 11,000+). Using dsh means configuring your own model key, while "free + no key" is what the wave of new users (many of them students and Chinese developers) wants most.
  2. "Works on install" beats "teach me how to configure" by an order of magnitude: competitors either wire up only one OpenCode lane that breaks whenever upstream changes (those 5 repos with 7 stars), or make users log into a dozen-plus platform accounts (dsh-xdpool). It's chatting within seconds of installing, so the first impression holds.
  4. Turning demand into stars: the main models (DeepSeek V4.1 Flash, Kimi K3 via EAC) require a star to use, and unstarring gets you revoked on the next recheck. Every user who wants a good model becomes a star that doesn't drop off. That's why it's growing faster than its host and has a fork rate a quarter of its peers'.
  5. The star count itself becomes content: "15k stars," "40k stars," and "#1 on the JS weekly chart" became repost headlines, creating a flywheel: more stars → more reposts → more installs → people need EAC → star.

6. Differentiation

  • Compared with peers: ① it has a paid channel funded by the author (EAC) that can provide the main models, while others can only offer the leftover free models upstream; ② anonymous lanes + account pool + aggregation + local gateway all combined into one plugin (much of it integrating others' MIT code); ③ it keeps tracking upstream fingerprint changes; ④ a built-in announcement system and one-click upgrades let it directly manage the entire install base.
  • Is that why it took off? Yes, but the key thing isn't a product feature; it's the mechanism of "paid channel × star gate". Without EAC, it's just another opencode2 dsh with 389 stars; without the star gate, the users wouldn't turn into 60k stars.

7. Visibility

Revenue isn't public, but it's been widely discussed: several Chinese accounts on X reposted it, the author's Bilibili launch video got about 200k views, plus reposts on Zhihu, CSDN, Instagram, YouTube, and LinkedIn; it's the most-starred plugin in the dsh ecosystem (excluding the host itself). By information standards it's not an uncovered niche.

8. Copycats

  • mu-zi-lee/magpie-our-free-model (created 10-09, 310 stars), Fish-under-sea/dsh-our-free-model-fish (created 10-11, 16 stars), ImSusua/dsh-our-free-model-installer (created 10-06, 14 stars), zouyuxuan122/dsh-our-free-model (mirror, listed by llmrepos);
  • someone squatted the unscoped dsh-our-free-model package on npm, with modified contents adding src/channel-visibility.js, and the README specifically warns about it;
  • There's a SourceForge mirror; hulibuld/dsh-get-it-for-free (10-24) does similar account aggregation.

9. Risks / uncertainties

  • Upstream dependency: OpenCode's anonymous lane runs by imitating client fingerprints, and it's already been tightened by upstream twice (10-14, 10-17). The WorkBuddy / Huawei Cloud channel 10-25 was removed entirely (announcement: "personal learning project, these channels are not provided"), and dsh-xdpool has a fixed version after the "20 workbuddy incident" too.
