"Grok Bot is too expensive for me": how a DeepSeek plugin got 5,700 stars in 30 days
What it is An open-source plugin and desktop app for DeepSeek Harness that lets you run a team of AI bots on your own computer with memory, group chat, and a supervisor. Think of it as a free, local version of Grok Bot.
Why it took off Grok Bot made "bot teams" popular, DeepSeek hadn't followed, and this project grabbed the gap under the name "DeepSeek Bot"; QbitAI wrote about it the same day. It gained more after frequent releases and a double-click installer.
CHow you could follow it Don't build another bot-team plugin inside DSH; copy its playbook instead: when a big company launches a hit product format and an open-source platform hasn't matched it yet, ship a "Y version of X" inside that platform's plugin ecosystem within a week, hand it to Chinese AI media the same day, and turn it into a standalone installer within two weeks.

A Zhihu contributor built a "DeepSeek version of Grok Bot" as a plugin in the DeepSeek Harness marketplace. QbitAI wrote it up as "DeepSeek Bot is here" the day after launch, and it gained 641 stars in one day. Two weeks later, turning the plugin into a double-click desktop app caught a second wave. What's worth studying is the playbook, not the position: the spot is already taken, and the platform itself is heading there.
One article, 641 stars in a day
On Oct 11 2026, at 11 a.m., QbitAI published a short piece titled "DeepSeek Bot is here! Community version, install the plugin in DSH and you're set." The opening line: "DeepSeek's official Muse hasn't arrived yet, but the community experts can't wait." A line in the middle is blunter: "Grok Bot is too expensive for me, so what does ds bot taste like?"
The repo was then called FeiZhuLulu/DeepSeek-Bot. It was created on Oct 7, and v0.1.0 was released on Oct 10. By Nov 6 it had been renamed Fei2411/DS-Bot, with about 5,700 stars and 530 forks (GitHub repo page, 11-06), and it gained 1,202 more stars in the last 7 days.
What it is
DeepSeek Harness (DSH) is an agent runtime framework that DeepSeek open-sourced in August. It has over 270k stars, and an official desktop version came out at the end of September, with a sidebar for one-click plugin installs. DS Bot is one of those plugins: it lets you run a team of "always-on" bots inside DSH.
- Each bot has its own name, role, avatar, and underlying model, plus long-term memory (stored as local Markdown files; after each conversation it automatically reviews what to remember and what to delete).
- There is a "supervisor" bot (Chief): you tell it one sentence, and it creates bots for you and sets up group chats.
- There are group chats, and by default only the supervisor replies in the group, calling other bots as needed. QbitAI wrote about this specifically, because in a "group chat environment that burns tokens fast," users in China care a lot about cost.
- All data stays on your own computer under the Apache-2.0 open-source license, free of charge; users pay model fees directly to DeepSeek.
In one line: the Grok Bot setup, local and free, running on cheap DeepSeek models.
Why this one, and why October
Big companies had already trained people on the format. xAI launched Grok Bot in Aug 11 and Team Bots in September; Meta's Muse arrived in Sep 8 and Claude Duet in Oct 21. "A team of AI bots doing work for you" was the hottest product format from 8 through October, but Grok Bot requires a subscription and is hard to access in China.
DeepSeek itself hadn't built it. The opening line of the QbitAI piece, "the official one hasn't come yet," is the hook of the whole article. DS Bot claimed the "DeepSeek version of Grok Bot" name in that gap.
The name rode on a big brand. "DeepSeek Bot" let media headlines barely change. The cost came later: in Oct 25 the author posted on X that the project was renamed DS-Bot and asked people to stop calling it DeepSeek Bot, and the v0.2.7 installer was renamed from DeepSeek-Bot to DS-Bot. The author didn't say whether the rename was for trademark reasons (likely, but unconfirmed).
Platform distribution was ready-made. Type ds-bot into the DSH desktop app and it installs. The ds-bot npm package had about 36k downloads in the last 30 days, and about 3,000 per day in early November (npm download stats, 11-06, including updates and repeat downloads).
The clearest comparison is BotHarness/DeepSeekBot, which launched 3 weeks earlier and also called itself an "open-source GrokBot alternative." Its features are similar, and it has 676 stars to date. The gap is about 9x, and it comes down to three things: whether media broke the story, how fast it shipped releases, and how hard it was to install. The differentiation is real, but it isn't why this one took off.
Second wave: from plugin to double-click install
After the first wave, daily star gains fell back to a hundred or two. The author didn't stop: in 32 days he merged 388 PRs and shipped 17 releases, and almost all of the 1,368 commits were his (with 3 external contributors).
The turning point was v0.2.0 in Oct 21: Windows and macOS desktop apps that bundle DSH, with no Node install and no admin rights, and DeepSeek accounts can be registered and logged into instantly with a phone number. The first line of the README is now a download button: "Download Windows 10/11 (64-bit), about 212 MB," followed by a long section explaining which buttons to click when Windows shows "Windows protected your PC." The installer isn't code-signed yet, and the author spells this out instead of hiding it. In Oct 23 Linux support was added, along with WinGet and Docker.
Daily stars rose by 413 and 294 on Oct 23 and 24 (trendshift), and it reached #6 on trendshift's JavaScript chart. I found no media article or major repost for this wave; the only things that line up are the desktop app release and the chart placement (likely the lower install barrier at work). In Nov 3 v0.2.7 shipped and the dsbot.app site went live. On Nov 4 the Zhihu overseas account @ZhihuFrontier published a long English post on its context management, and in the following days it went back to gaining more than 200 stars a day.
Its GitHub Release assets have been downloaded about 54k times in total, including 4,705 downloads of the v0.2.7 Windows installer. Auto-updates are included in that count, and from the outside there's no way to tell how many people actually installed it or stuck with it.
Some of the growth came from others too: in Oct 11 someone open-sourced a mobile client for DS Bot (QingJ01/DS-Bot-App, 189 stars), and on Oct 14 NetEase published "DeepSeek Bot mobile client open-sourced," another round of exposure.
Who's following, and who could eat its lunch
A cluster of copycats has already appeared: omdsh-dev/dsh-bot, tyxt-zvid/deepseek-bot-army, qingfengyu153781-star/dsh-bot, 8kugames/dsh-team-bots, and lisongjianustc/dsh-bot, created in Nov 6 ("MiniMax-Bot-style"). All have single-digit stars. Projects in the same ecosystem with a similar direction but a different focus:
| Project | stars | How it differs from DS Bot |
|---|---|---|
| xmanrui/dsh-im | 3,266 | Connects DSH to Feishu, WeChat, and QQ; it's a bot for existing IM apps |
| NanmiCoder/dsh-agent-teams | 2,715 | A one-off task team (split tasks, run in parallel), not a long-lived bot with memory |
| BotHarness/DeepSeekBot | 676 | Nearly identical positioning, but earlier, with no media launch and no installer |
| toolclub/dsh-agent-team-gui | 287 | A DAG-style workflow team; stalled |
The real threat is above: in Oct 31 the official DSH team open-sourced a Super-agent prototype, and it hit twenty thousand stars in under a week. It currently only does a coding agent for a single repo, and it explicitly says it is "not an official product." But on DSH discussion #10674 someone has already proposed making always-on bot teams a first-class capability, noting that ds-bot proved it's feasible. If the official version ever builds it in, this plugin's position gets thin.
If it were you
Verdict: C. Don't chase this specific position. "DeepSeek version of Grok Bot" is already taken by it, with 5,700 stars and a round of media coverage behind it; the later copycats all have single-digit stars, and the platform is moving that way too. What's worth taking is the playbook, applied to the next platform where the space is still open.
Who it suits: people who can ship a usable version of a big company's new product format within a week or two; ideally with some existing visibility in the Chinese AI community (Zhihu, X, WeChat Official Accounts), and knowing how to get outlets like QbitAI or Synced to write about it the same day.
Who it's not for: anyone who wants to build another "Bot team" plugin inside the DSH ecosystem. You'd be number N with no news hook. Anything that only ships features and no distribution, like the DS Bot rival that came 3 weeks earlier, is the example. 676 stars.
How to do it: watch a big open-source platform with a plugin marketplace, hundreds of thousands of stars, and a slow-moving official team. When a big-company hit product shows a new form and the platform hasn't responded, build a "Y version of X" as a plugin within a week. Make the first sentence of the README say exactly that. Borrow the plugin marketplace for distribution, and within two weeks turn it into a double-click standalone installer. Pick one pain point local users care about and put it in the description (DS Bot's was "in group chats only the lead replies by default, saves tokens"). If you insist on doing it against DS Bot, the only open space is what it hasn't done well yet: mobile, IM integration, signed installers. Build those as companion projects, ride its traffic, but the ceiling is probably a few hundred stars (the mobile one is 189).
How to get users: on launch day, send a screenshot that's clear at a glance, plus a line in the style of "I can't afford X, here's the Y version," to Chinese AI media and Chinese AI accounts on X. After that, give every release a new thing to write about (installer, mobile app, website, a long post on one technical detail), and post on X and Zhihu each time you ship. You can ride a big brand name for launch traffic, but have a rename ready for two weeks later.
Deadline: for the DS Bot slot, the window has already closed. For this playbook, the window is one to three weeks after a big company launches a new form. That's when the platform hasn't responded yet and media most want to write about the "grassroots version."
How you'd be wrong: (1) DSH's official team keeps not shipping a built-in persistent Bot team, and a follower to DS Bot gets over a thousand stars within a month. That would show the ecosystem isn't saturated. (2) The reverse: after the official prototype keeps moving, DS Bot still gains a steady one to two hundred stars a day. That would show a "persistent Bot team" has independent demand, and that filling the gaps DS Bot leaves is worth investing in.

Why DS Bot (Fei2411/DS-Bot) took off
Research date 2026-11-06. Data: our GitHub database (repo_profile / repo_day), live GitHub API lookups, trendshift, npm download stats, Jina web search.
One line
DS Bot is a community plugin for DeepSeek Harness (DSH), plus a standalone desktop app. It turns DSH into a long-running "Bot team": a lead Bot (Chief), Bots that message each other, group chats, and each Bot with its own memory and model. Put simply, it's a grassroots DeepSeek alternative to Grok Bot. It took off mainly because it caught the timing: in 2026 8–October, the "personal Agent / Bot team" wave took off (xAI's Grok Bot 8/11, Meta's Muse 9/8, Claude Duet 10/21), DeepSeek had no official version, and DSH already had 270k stars and a big plugin ecosystem. A piece Quantum Bit published the day after launch lit up the Chinese AI media scene. Then the author shipped at a very high cadence (388 PRs merged in 32 days, 17 releases), and by 10/21 turned the plugin into a desktop app you could double-click to use without installing DSH, catching a second wave.
Data
- Repo created 2026-10-07, v10-10 released 0.1.0 (npm package
ds-botalso published in 10-10). As of 11-06 it had 5,714 stars (data card). The live GitHub API showed 5,896 stars and 547 forks. The fork-to-star ratio is about 9.3%, close to the median for new repos of similar size (about 11%). The suspect field in the database is empty. - Daily star gains (trendshift): 10-10 +79 → 10-11 +641 (QbitAI day) → 10-12 +528 → 10-13 +313, then back to 100–200 a day. 10-23 +413 and 10-24 +294 (10-21 v0.2.0 desktop app, 10-23 v0.2.1 added Linux; these two days it reached #6 and #10 on trendshift's JavaScript chart). From 11-03 to 11-05 it fell back to 200–258 a day (11-03 v0.2.7 shipped, official site dsbot.app went live, 11-04 the Zhihu overseas account @ZhihuFrontier published a long post). Last 7 days: +1,202; the 7 days before that: +1,489 (our database).
- Indirect evidence of usage: npm
ds-bothad 30 downloads in the last 35,929 days, rising from 11-02 to 11-04, about 3,000 a day. Cumulative GitHub Release asset downloads are about 54k (including latest.yml used by auto-update, so not all are new installs). Of those, the Windows installer for v0.2.7 had 4,705 downloads. - 3 external contributors (AdamPlatin123 with 93 commits, klarkxy with 90, ccch1mneyyy with 23). The author made 1,368 commits. PRs are reviewed with Devin / Codex, and output is fast.
- No revenue: Apache-2.0 free, users bring their own DeepSeek account or API key and pay DeepSeek per use.

Growth tactics (evidence)
- Chinese AI media launch (confirmed, the main engine): 10-11 QbitAI published "DeepSeek Bot is here! Grassroots version, install it as a plugin in DSH." Sina Finance, Phoenix Tech, Sohu and Tencent News reprinted it. The same day, Pandaily and BigGo published English and Traditional Chinese pieces, and 10-12 OSChina and a Zhihu column followed (the Zhihu piece says "even DSH lead Cui liked it"). The QbitAI article says "+250 stars in under a day" after launch, and trendshift recorded +10-11 for that day, 641.
- X Chinese AI influencer reposts (confirmed): @NFT_Chen 10-12 "hit 250+ stars in under a day, now close to a thousand…a direct rival to Grok Bot"; @hungryturbo, @0xLogicrw, @KengGuangLong, @xiangxiang103 ("1800 more stars"), @yupi996 wrote a long post, "What is a Personal Agent? …Even DeepSeek Bot is here"; Tencent News 10-12 also ran a piece on the same topic.
- Name borrowing (confirmed, later dropped): the original repo was FeiZhuLulu/DeepSeek-Bot, the product was called "DeepSeek Bot," and media headlines just said "DeepSeek Bot is here." 10-25 the author said on X that it was renamed DS-Bot and asked people to stop using "DeepSeek Bot" (likely a trademark reason). v0.2.7 installers changed from DeepSeek-Bot-* to DS-Bot-*. Early traffic owed a lot to the "DeepSeek" name.
- Lower install barrier (confirmed): 10-21 v0.2.0 released Windows and macOS standalone desktop apps with DSH built in, logged in with a DeepSeek account. 10-23 added Linux. It also landed on WinGet (listed on winstall.app) and a Docker image. 10-23 to 10-24 brought a second peak.
- Others in the ecosystem followed (confirmed): 10-11 QingJ01 open-sourced a DS Bot App (Android / mobile, 189 stars), and 10-14 NetEase published "DeepSeek Bot mobile open-sourced," bringing another round of exposure. In DSH's official discussion board, #10674 has a user proposing to make a persistent Bot team a first-class feature, noting that ds-bot has proven it works.
- Author's own content and website (confirmed): the author is a Zhihu contributor. 11-04 @ZhihuFrontier published an English long post on DS Bot's intelligent context management (ICM). The dsbot.app site went live. The author posts release updates on X (e.g., "v0.2.4… celebrating 4500⭐"). There are also Chinese YouTube tutorials ("DeepSeek Bot grassroots plugin, free to install") and Bilibili videos.
- No evidence found of paid ads, paid acquisition or bought stars.
Why it took off
- Timing: Grok Bot made "a team of AI Bots" the hottest product shape from 8 to October. Chinese users wanted it but couldn't afford it or easily use it. DeepSeek had no official equivalent at the time (QbitAI's lede: "DeepSeek's official Muse hasn't arrived yet, and the community experts can't wait"). In that gap, DS Bot grabbed the spot of "the DeepSeek version of Grok Bot" first.
- Platform tailwind: DSH 8-13 is open source with 274k stars, and 9-29 launched an official desktop app with one-click plugin install. DS Bot only needs
ds-botin the plugin config to tap straight into that ready-made user base. - Easy to explain in one line, easy for media to write about: "a free, local-data DeepSeek alternative to Grok Bot," plus the name "DeepSeek Bot." QbitAI wrote about it the same day.
- More complete than similar products: the main Bot builds your team through conversation; group chats only let admins reply by default to save tokens; Bots have memory and usage stats; later came a standalone installer, Office file handling, browser control, /btw side questions, and mobile. Compared with BotHarness/DeepSeekBot, which launched 3 weeks earlier, features are similar. The difference is media launch + release speed + low install barrier.
- The author has credibility: the same account's real-api-pricing has 1,071 stars, they also built Agent-Bridge, and they're a Zhihu contributor with connections and channels in the Chinese AI community.
Differentiation
Versus big-company Grok Bot / Muse / Duet: it runs locally, is open source, free, and lets you swap models freely (pitched on DeepSeek's low prices), with data staying on your own machine. Versus agent-teams-style plugins in the DSH ecosystem: it offers long-lived Bots with identity and memory, plus a social-style group chat / supervisor interaction, rather than one-off task splitting. Add smart context management (auto-compress or start a new session at a threshold). The differentiation holds, but it's not the main reason it took off: BotHarness/DeepSeekBot with the same positioning came earlier. The initial surge came mainly from timing, the name, and media launch; sustained growth (a hundred or two stars a day) came from differentiation and release speed, since standalone installers and mobile kept giving new angles to write about.
Visibility
Media has already covered it in a round (QbitAI, Open Source China, Pandaily, NetEase, Tencent News, Zhihu overseas account). It's widely discussed in the Chinese AI community but only sporadically covered in English. No revenue. Copycats have already appeared: omdsh-dev/dsh-bot (10-09, "Native multi-Bot chats"), tyxt-zvid/deepseek-bot-army (10-21), qingfengyu153781-star/dsh-bot (10-18), Seren-715/dsh-remote-groups (10-20, explicitly based on DeepSeek-Bot), 8kugames/dsh-team-bots (11-03), lisongjianustc/dsh-bot (11-06, "MiniMax-Bot-style"), each with a few stars; plus mobile apps built on it, QingJ01/DS-Bot-App and MuQY1818/ds-bot-mobile-app. The biggest threat is DSH's official team: 10-31 the official team open-sourced a Super-agent prototype (20,080 stars), and the community is pushing for "persistent Bot teams" to become a built-in feature.
Takeaways
- When a big-company hit (Grok Bot) lands and the official team of a major open-source platform (DSH) hasn't caught up, building "a Y version of X" inside that platform's plugin ecosystem is easy to explain in one line, and media will write about it the same day.
- A name tied to a big brand can buy launch traffic (but have a rename ready for later).
- Ride the platform's distribution via a plugin first, then quickly ship a standalone installer to lower the barrier to "double-click and run" and catch a second wave; each release gives creators a new topic.
- On the product side, target pain points Chinese users care about, like "saves tokens" (group chats only let the supervisor reply by default).
Uncertain
- Active users and retention: update, CI, and repeat downloads are mixed into npm and Release download counts; actual installs are unverified.
- I found no specific media article or big-account repost for the 10-21–10-24 wave; it can only be attributed to the desktop app release and trendshift ranking for now.
- Whether the rename was driven by DeepSeek trademark requirements is unverified.
- Unknown whether the position would be replaced if DeepSeek's official team builds persistent Bot teams into DSH.
- The GitHub stargazers API returned 404, so I couldn't get per-star timestamps or accounts, and couldn't check the quality of the starring accounts.
