# Two Arabic tweets, 460 stars in three days: how a 16-year-old student's "free IDM" got seen

**What it is** A free, open-source download accelerator that runs on Windows, Mac, and Linux, aimed at IDM, the long-running paid Windows app.

**Why it took off** IDM is popular in the Middle East and Indonesia through cracked copies. Two Arabic-language tech accounts posted it as a "free IDM alternative." It shipped with an Arabic right-to-left UI, a polished README, and several releases a day, so it could absorb the traffic when it came.

**C** **How you could ride this** Stop building another IDM clone. Pick another old, Windows-only, paid app that is widely pirated and make a free open-source replacement. Ship Arabic and Indonesian UI before launch, and send screenshots directly to tech accounts in those regions that cover "ditch paid software."

Grade C: the playbook is clear and easy to copy, but the download manager category already has several old projects with tens of thousands of stars and a batch of AI-written newcomers from the same period, so another entry struggles to get more stars. Prism itself only reached 758 stars with no second wave. Worth studying the method, not worth entering this category. Chatter in small circles

A 16-year-old student in the Czech Republic wrote a download manager in Rust. In the first two weeks he posted about it himself on dev.to, Reddit, and LinkedIn, and gathered only 100 stars. Then two Arabic-language tech accounts each posted a "free open-source alternative to IDM," and in three days it added 460 stars. Below: what it is, where the stars came from, why it could handle the traffic, how much room is left in this niche, and which step to copy if you want your own project seen the same way.

### A dev.to post with only 1 likes

On 2026 Oct 15, a new account called Honza23 published its first post on dev.to, titled "I made Prism, a free and open-source alternative to IDM". The body was short:

> Hey! I'm 16 and I've been building Prism, a download manager like IDM. It's free, open source (MIT), and has no ads and no account.

It then listed six features: up to 32 connections for segmented downloads, taking over Chrome/Edge/Firefox downloads, extracting videos with yt-dlp, torrent downloads, resuming after crashes, and support for Windows/macOS/Linux, with a demo video and the site prismdl.site. By 11-06, the post had 1 likes and 0 comments.

He posted the same title and body to Reddit's r/foss, r/coolgithubprojects, and r/IMadeThis, and 10-17 also posted once on LinkedIn. 10-19 someone submitted it to Hacker News, but it never reached the front page. By 10-20, the repo had 37 stars; 10-28,106 stars in total.

### What it actually is

A desktop downloader aimed at IDM (Internet Download Manager), written in Rust + Tauri under the MIT license. IDM is a paid Windows-only program that has been around for over twenty years. Many people in the Middle East, Indonesia, and South Asia use cracked copies: a GitHub "IDM activation script" repo alone has 7.6k stars.

Prism offers "IDM's feature set + free + three platforms + good looks": segmented acceleration, a browser extension that takes over downloads (already listed in the Chrome Web Store), video and MP3 extraction, BitTorrent and magnet links, HLS/DASH streams, and a feature rare in its category: batch downloading Hugging Face models by name with SHA-256 verification. The interface uses a liquid-glass style, and the README and website include a promo video, animated GIFs, and benchmarks, with support for 10 languages.

### Where the stars came from

Look at the daily star count (GitHub, daily snapshots):

| Date | Stars | Added that day |
|---|---|---|
| 10-17 | 24 | |
| 10-28 | 106 | |
| 10-29 | 231 | +125 |
| 10-30 | 393 | +162 |
| 10-31 | 568 | +175 (single-day peak) |
| 11-02 | 685 | |
| 11-06 | 758 | +20 |

The inflection point was 10-29. That morning at 5:25 Beijing time, the Arabic tech account @TechBit_M posted:

> 🔥 New download manager Prism Download Manager: a free, open-source alternative to IDM with a very strong feature set. …Free, no ads.

That post got 1,065 likes and 42k views. The next day @ElboussM posted again, opening with "Goodbye IDM and paid subscriptions!", with 875 likes and 37k views. The timing of both posts lines up exactly with the star curve.

Then came a wave of regional reposts: the Arabic forum absba 10-29 posted it; the Indonesian blog banghasan.com 10-30 wrote a long review; the Indonesian YouTube/TikTok account TeknoXpert 11-02 posted "SELAMAT TINGGAL IDM!" (Goodbye IDM!); the Thai and English download site mawtoload 11-03 listed it; and a Chinese X account 11-02 reshared it, while someone in China made a gitcode mirror and wrote a tutorial on "building Prism from source." I found no sign of paid acquisition, influencer outreach, or a Product Hunt launch.

Notice who drove the traffic. It wasn't HN, Reddit, or the English developer community. It was **Arabic- and Indonesian-language tech accounts focused on "ditch paid software"** . Their audiences are exactly where IDM cracked-version users are most concentrated.

Beyond stars, there's real install data. GitHub Releases download counts (11-06): across all versions, installers total about 14k downloads, with the Windows exe at 9,266, roughly two-thirds; the auto-update check file was fetched 86k times, which suggests at least several thousand machines with it installed and running.

### Why it could handle the traffic

Two posts can bring a few hundred stars, but the same posts for a different project might not have the same effect. Prism had three things in place beforehand:

**A native-language interface was already there.** 10-28, the day before the Arabic post, the author wrote on LinkedIn: "13 days, 100 stars, 16 releases, 2,200+ downloads, 8 languages, including a fully right-to-left Arabic window." Arabic users who clicked through saw a complete, right-to-left Arabic interface. Turkish and Simplified Chinese were added later, based on issues.

**It looked credible and was easy to screenshot.** A polished README, a promo video, benchmarks, 6 installer formats, no login, no ads, no telemetry. The screenshots and feature lists that repost accounts needed were all in the README; the feature lists in the two Arabic posts were nearly a translation of the README.

**Fast fixes.** 10-15 shipped 1.0.0, and by 11-01 it was shipping 1.2.4,17 releases in 24 days; on the 10-30 surge day it pushed 4 versions. Many issues were fixed the same day, Linux and KDE users' problems were closed one by one, and three external contributors submitted PRs.

The "built by a 16-year-old student" story played well on dev.to and Reddit, but by the numbers, that story didn't drive much volume. The traffic came from the two Arabic posts, which didn't mention the author's age.

### Who it's competing with

This category is crowded. Prism isn't the first, and it doesn't have the most stars:

| Project | Launched | Stars (11-06) | Compared with Prism |
|---|---|---|---|
| Motrix | 2018 | 57.8k | aria2 + Electron, weak on video |
| Gopeed | 2019 | 27.4k | Go + Flutter, similar features |
| AB Download Manager | 2024-07 | 19k | Nearly identical positioning (IDM alternative + browser extension), two years earlier |
| Rayburst(Motrix Next) | 2026-03 | 11.4k | Motrix's newer version |
| FileCentipede | 2022 | 10.9k | Full protocol support, skews toward the Chinese-speaking community |
| XDM | 2013 | 8.3k | Long-running IDM alternative, dated UI |
| omniget | 2026-07 | 4.2k | Also Tauri, focused on downloading from course and video sites; up +3.8k in the last 7 days, growing much faster than Prism |

More significant is the batch that appeared the same autumn: DownloadCraft (Rust, 10-14,146 stars), Hydra Download Manager, Flux/FluxDown, NeXDM, DLM, PIDM, and others, most with tens to hundreds of stars. "Write an IDM alternative in Rust/Tauri with AI" is now something many people are building at the same time. Prism is the one in this batch with the most stars and the widest reach, but every feature in its combination is one others already have.

It also has its own risks: the installers aren't code-signed, Kaspersky flagged the 1.1.7 installer as a Trojan (issue #35), and its website was put on a security site's blocklist. In the download-manager category, that's the worst reputational damage. There have been no commits to the repo since 11-01, so it has been stalled for 5 days; daily star gains fell from 175 to 20, and there was no second wave.

### If it were you

**In short: don't build another IDM alternative. Learn how it found its audience.** The category already has long-running projects with tens of thousands of stars, such as AB DM, Gopeed, and Motrix, plus a whole batch of new projects from the same period. Building another one is unlikely to get more stars than Prism did.

**Who it's for:** developers who already have, or can quickly build, a free open-source alternative to some paid legacy Windows tool, and who are willing to put in the time on localization and the README.

**Who it's not for:** anyone who only wants stars from the English developer community (HN, Reddit). "Free alternative" posts get a lukewarm reception there. Prism itself got only 100 stars in its first two weeks on those platforms.

**How to do it:**

1. Pick a different target. Choose an old tool that is Windows-only, paid, and popular through cracked copies in the Middle East, Indonesia, South Asia, or Latin America (compression, screen capture/recording, PDF, subtitles, burning, driver management, and similar). The title can simply be "Free open-source alternative to X"; that line is already the promo material.

2. Before launch, ship Arabic (fully right-to-left window), Indonesian, Turkish, and Portuguese/Spanish interfaces. When others repost it, users who click through should see their own language.

3. Treat the README as a landing page: a promo video, GIFs, a feature list, and install instructions for each platform, with a clear explanation of why the installers aren't signed and how to verify them. Repost accounts can use the screenshots directly. If possible, pay for code signing on the Windows installer to avoid the "malware flag" problem.

4. During the surge days, ship releases daily and respond to issues the same day, so the people who arrive stay.

**How to get users:** don't wait for them to find you. Go to X and find Arabic- and Indonesian-language tech accounts posting about "free alternatives" and "ditching paid software" (the two accounts behind Prism are a good model), and send them the feature list and screenshots directly. Post in software forums and download sites in those regions at the same time. In the English community, posting on dev.to and Reddit is fine as a record, but don't expect it to drive volume.

**When to move:** the "free open-source alternative built with AI" wave is growing, and repost accounts will get more selective as they see more of them. Acting before the first half of 2027 is the safer bet.

**Signs you've misread it:** if you've localized the product, contacted a dozen or so regional tech accounts, and your stars don't reach one hundred within a week of posting, the target doesn't have as large a cracked-software audience locally as IDM did, so switch targets. Also, if the software you picked already has an open-source alternative with tens of thousands of stars on GitHub, that space is already taken.

## Why Prism Download Manager (FortoGraphy/prism-download-manager) took off

> Research date 2026-11-06. Channel: GitHub. Repo [github.com/FortoGraphy/prism-download-manager](https://github.com/FortoGraphy/prism-download-manager), website [prismdl.site](https://prismdl.site)

### Bottom line

This is an open-source Rust/Tauri download manager built by a 16-year-old student in the Czech Republic, aimed at IDM (Windows-only, paid, widely pirated). For its first two weeks it relied on the author's own posts on dev.to, Reddit, HN, and LinkedIn, gaining a few stars a day. The real surge came from 10-29 to 10-31: two Arabic tech X accounts posted "free open-source alternative to IDM" in succession (about 40k views each, 900–1000 likes), and Arabic forums, Indonesian blogs and YouTube, a Thai download site, and Chinese repost accounts followed. The traffic landed in the Middle East and Southeast Asia, where IDM users are most numerous. The author had already built Arabic (full right-to-left window), Indonesian, Turkish, and Simplified Chinese interfaces and was shipping updates quickly, so the project could absorb it. The product itself is "full IDM feature set + free + three platforms + good-looking." That combination isn't new (AB Download Manager, Motrix, Gopeed, and XDM have had it for a while). Its edge is mainly the polished interface and release cadence, not a real moat.

### 1. Data

- Stars: 10-17 24 → 10-28 106 → 10-29 231 (+125) → 10-30 393 (+162) → 10-31 568 (+175, single-day peak) → 11-02 685 → 11-06 758; after 11-02 it gained only 20–50 a day (our GitHub repo_day data). Forks: 57; issues/PRs up to #72.

- Downloads (GitHub Releases API, pulled 2026-11-06): across all versions, installers total about 14k downloads, of which the Windows exe is 9,266, zip/portable 1,404, dmg 947, AppImage 860, deb 747, msi 465, rpm 458; the website badge says "15k." The auto-update check file latest.json was fetched 85,887 times, which suggests at least several thousand active installs that stay running and check for updates (this is an estimate, not verified). Windows accounts for about 2/3.

- Release cadence: 10-15 shipped 1.0.0; by 11-01 it was shipping 1.2.4,17 releases in 24 days. On 10-30 it shipped 4 versions in one day (1.1.8, 1.2.0, 1.2.1, 1.2.2), right on the surge day.

- There have been no new commits to the repo since 11-01 (pushed_at 2026-11-01), so it has been idle for 5 days.

- Revenue: Ko-fi tips only (ko-fi.com/prismdownloadmanager, $3 for a "Beam"; the page shows "someone bought one 5 days ago"). Amounts aren't public, and there is no paid tier.

- The Chrome extension is listed (id mmcdeiglkbfbicdjboocmhehodogilfl). Our chromestore database only captured the URL, with no user-count snapshot, and page scraping didn't get the count (unverified).

### 2. Competitors

| Product | Where | Launched | Scale | How it differs from Prism |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| IDM (Internet Download Manager) | Commercial Windows software | Around 2000 | The category benchmark. On GitHub, the "IDM activation script" repos have 7.6k stars and the Chinese crack repos have 1.7k, a sign that piracy is widespread. | Windows only, paid, and cracked copies everywhere. Prism is free, open source, and runs on three platforms, with yt-dlp video and BT built in. |
| Free Download Manager (FDM) | Cross-platform, closed source, free | 2003 | Long-established, with lots of YouTube tutorials | Closed source, dated UI. Prism is MIT-licensed open source. |
| Motrix / Rayburst(Motrix Next) | Open source | 2018 / 2026-03 | 57.8k / 11.4k stars | Built on aria2 + Electron, weak on video. Prism is a native Rust engine with built-in yt-dlp video/MP3. |
| Gopeed | Open source, Go + Flutter | 2019 | 27.4k stars | Similar features (HTTP/BT/magnet). Prism's selling points are the UI, browser takeover, and video. |
| AB Download Manager | Open source, Kotlin | 2024-07 | 19k stars, and Neowin keeps covering it | Almost the same positioning (IDM alternative + browser extension), and it came out two years earlier. Prism adds video/MP3, BT, and HF model downloads. |
| XDM (Xtreme Download Manager) | Open source | 2013 | 8.3k stars | Long-running IDM alternative, dated UI |
| FileCentipede | Open source | 2022 | 10.9k stars | Full protocol support, skews toward the Chinese-speaking community |
| omniget | Open source, Tauri/Rust | 2026-07 | 4.2k stars, +7 in the last 3,794 days (our github database) | Same Tauri stack, focused on course/video downloads, and growing faster than Prism right now |
| A batch of small projects from the same period: DownloadCraft (Rust, 2026-10-14,146 stars), Hydra Download Manager (listed by Neowin 10-25), Flux / FluxDown (Rust, October), NeXDM (Show HN, 3 points), DLM, PIDM, Brisk | Open source | 2026-09 to November | Most have tens to a few hundred stars | In the autumn of 2026 a wave of "AI-written Rust IDM alternatives" appeared. Prism was the one with the most stars and the widest reach. |
| Built-in browser downloads | Big-company features | — | Everyone has them | Single connection; if it drops you have to restart the download; can't download video |

Bottom line: this category is crowded. Prism is not the first, and not the most complete.

### 3. Where users came from (by time)

1. **10-15 上线当天,作者自己发帖** :dev.to「I made Prism, a free and open-source alternative to IDM」(作者号 Honza23,10-15),同样的标题和正文(「Hey! I'm 16…」)发到 Reddit 的 r/foss、r/coolgithubprojects、r/IMadeThis(Jina/Exa 搜索结果;Reddit 页面抓不到,具体日期和票数未核实)。这几篇帖带来的星很少:到 10-20 只有 37 颗。

2. **10-17 The author posted the product on LinkedIn** ; 10-19 someone submitted it to HN (the johan.se aggregator page says "via HackerNews on 19 October"), but it isn't in our HN database (≥5 points), so HN didn't take off.

3. **10-28 LinkedIn** : the author posted "13 days, 100 stars, 16 versions, 2,200+ downloads, 8 languages (including a full right-to-left Arabic window)"; Jan Sechovec, same name (probably family), reshared it with "organic hockey stick." 10-29 also posted about bulk downloads on Hugging Face.

4. **10-29 to 10-30: an Arabic-language X account drove the spike** (confirmed via X live search):
    - @TechBit_M (محيا) posted "a new download manager, Prism, a free open-source alternative to IDM" on 10-29 05:25 (Beijing time): 1,065 likes, 96 reposts, 42,175 views.
    - @ElboussM (Monaim.dev) posted "Say goodbye to IDM and paid subscriptions" on 10-30 04:17: 875 likes, 121 reposts, 37,104 views.
    - The timing of these two posts matches the star curve: 10-29 +125, 10-30 +162, 10-31 +175.

5. **It also spread to other regions:** an Arabic forum, forum.absba.cc, has a post 10-29 (329 views); Indonesian blog banghasan.com 10-30 with a long review; Indonesian YouTube/TikTok channel TeknoXpert 11-02 posted "SELAMAT TINGGAL IDM!" and "IDM GRATIS?!" (577 TikTok views); Thai and English download site mawtoload 11-03 listed it; Chinese X account @BlackMelooo 11-02 reposted it (1,212 views); someone in China made a mirror on gitcode, and there's a repost of "building Prism from source" (yfxerp.com 11-04); trendshift.io also picked it up.

6. **Declined starting 11-02** : daily gains fell to 20–50 stars, with no second wave.

No evidence of ads, influencer outreach, a Product Hunt launch, or a push for GitHub Trending. Our database shows trending_days_any=0, because trending only tracks repos about 60 days old, and it isn't there yet.

### 4. Why it took off

- **The demand is constant, and it's concentrated in specific regions** : IDM is Windows-only and paid, and people in the Middle East, Indonesia, and South Asia use cracked copies. So the line "a free, open-source IDM" travels well by itself, and Arabic and Indonesian tech accounts love this kind of "goodbye paid software" content. Evidence: the two Arabic posts together got about 80k views, and the IDM activation-script repos on GitHub have 7.6k stars.

- **It localized early, so it could absorb outside traffic** : the full right-to-left Arabic UI was done before 10-28, and Indonesian, Turkish, and Simplified Chinese were added later (the Turkish and Chinese came from issues #31 and #42). When the Arabic accounts posted, users clicked through to an interface in their own language.

- **Low barrier, looks credible** : the README and website are polished (with a promo video, GIFs, benchmarks, and 10 languages). One-click installers cover Win/mac/Linux in 6 formats, and there's a Chrome Web Store extension. No login, no ads, no telemetry.

- **Same-day bug fixes kept early users** : 24 releases in 17 days, and many issues were fixed the same day. The author wrote "Ship small and often" on LinkedIn. Bugs reported by Linux and KDE users were fixed one by one, and 3 people in the community submitted PRs.

- **The story is easy to tell** : "built by a 16-year-old student" and "because IDM is terrible" are crowd-pleasing narratives on Reddit and dev.to. But the data shows the real traffic came from the Arabic accounts, not from this story.

### 5. Differentiation, and whether it's really why it grew

- The feature combination: multi-connection (up to 32 streams), browser takeover, yt-dlp video/MP3, BT/magnet, HLS/DASH, Hugging Face model downloads by name with SHA-256 verification, and a liquid-glass UI. The HF model download is unusual in this category, but almost no one mentioned it in the posts.

- Most of these individual features are already available elsewhere. AB Download Manager, Gopeed, and Motrix are all free, open-source, and cross-platform. The real difference is **a nicer interface + built-in video downloads + fast updates + early localization** .

- Is it the reason it took off? **Only partly** . The posts kept repeating "free, open source, no ads, IDM alternative", and that pitch works equally well for AB DM or Gopeed. Prism got picked up by the Arabic accounts probably because it was the newest, best-looking option, with the most ready-made copy and screenshots, plus an Arabic interface. So the differentiation mainly helped it get chosen and kept installed. It doesn't own a unique need.

### 6. How many people know about it

- It's circulating in niche circles: Arabic and Indonesian tech accounts and download sites have already posted about it. There's no coverage from major English accounts or mainstream tech media (Neowin, Ghacks, the HN front page), and the core AI/developer accounts on X haven't mentioned it (0 entries in the local x-radar database). Revenue isn't public; there are only Ko-fi tips.

- Copycats: none that directly copied Prism. But a large batch of similar projects appeared in the same period (DownloadCraft, Hydra, Flux/FluxDown, NeXDM, DLM, PIDM, and omniget, which is growing faster), which suggests "AI-written Rust/Tauri IDM alternative" has become a direction everyone is building in.

### 7. Risks and open questions

- The installers aren't signed. Kaspersky flags it as PDM:Trojan (issue #35), and Gridinsoft gave prismdl.site a trust score of 29/100 and blacklisted it. This kind of problem does the most damage to reputation in the download-manager category.

- No new commits since 11-01. The author is a student, so long-term maintenance is uncertain.

- The dates and vote counts on the Reddit posts, and the points on the HN submission, could not be verified.

- How the 86k latest.json fetches translate into active users (assuming each machine checks a few times a day) is an estimate.

- No evidence found on whether the two Arabic posts that kicked things off were organic reshares or were arranged by the author or people close to him.

### 8. What others can learn

- "A free, open-source alternative to paid legacy Windows software" is a one-line pitch that works as promo material. The real users are in piracy hotspots (the Middle East, Indonesia, South Asia, Latin America), and English-speaking communities didn't drive much traffic.

- Ship Arabic (RTL), Indonesian, Turkish, and Chinese localization before launch, so "goodbye paid software" repost accounts in those regions can use it right away.

- Treat the README as a landing page: include a promo video, benchmarks, per-platform install instructions, and an explanation of why the installers are unsigned. Repost accounts can then use the screenshots directly.

- During the spike, release several versions a day and fix bugs the same day to hold on to the incoming traffic.
