Removing TV ads for your parents, 52k stars in 20 days: CleanYourTV sells a story, not a tool
What it is A prompt for AI agents like Claude Code, plus a few scripts. On the same Wi-Fi, it disables the vendor ads, telemetry, and preinstalled software on Android / Google TV (uninstall is not required, and everything can be restored in one step), then installs a clean desktop that looks like Apple TV.
Why it took off The author posted "used Claude Code to remove the TV ads for my parents" with a before-and-after image. It got 8.7M views on X, hitting two sentiments at once: hatred of TV ads and the feeling that AI agents can actually get things done. TechCrunch, The Verge, and 400 other outlets picked it up, and it topped GitHub's weekly trending chart.
BHow you can follow it TV is already crowded. What's worth copying is the format: pick a household device with many models that ordinary people are afraid to touch (routers, car head units, e-readers, etc.), and package it as "a prompt for agents + scripts with backup and restore + a user-submittable list of models." Cold-start it with a post that includes a before-and-after image.

An Indian developer used Claude Code to clear ads off his parents' Xiaomi TV, posted about it, and three weeks later the repo had 52,550 stars and 412 media articles. An ad-free desktop and ADB debloating are both years-old techniques. What's new is handing the work to an AI agent. Below: what it is, where the stars came from, how far the followers have gotten, and how you could still follow.
One afternoon, one TV
Oct 17, 2026: Gathin (@gathint on X, developer relations at 0G Labs, around 10K followers at the time) posted from his parents' house:
Vibe coded my parents' TV this afternoon! It was showing a sponsored ad before you could even get to Netflix. Gave Claude Code the model number, it found the TV on wifi, removed 25 Xiaomi packages and wrote a new launcher. Looks like an Apple TV now lol
"Before Netflix even opens, a sponsored ad plays first. I gave the model number to Claude Code. It found the TV on the Wi-Fi, disabled 25 Xiaomi packages, wrote a new desktop, and now it looks like Apple TV." With a before-and-after image and the repo link in the reply.
By 11-06, the post had 8.72M views, 35.9k likes, 32k bookmarks, and 1,695 reposts. Bookmarks are close to likes, which is rare on X: people saved it to come back to later, planning to do the same for their own (or their parents') TV.
What it actually is
One repo: a prompt for AI agents (PROMPT.md) plus several scripts. Connect your computer and the TV to the same Wi-Fi, enable USB debugging on the TV, clone the repo, hand it to Claude Code, Codex, or Gemini CLI, paste the prompt, and enter the TV model. The agent then does three things on its own:
| Step | What it does |
|---|---|
| Backup | Record which packages are installed and what settings are in place |
| Disable | Use pm disable-user to turn off the vendor's telemetry, ad services, recommendation bar, and preinstalled software. Nothing is uninstalled, and one command restores it |
| Install desktop | Compile a 572 KB native desktop on the spot: pure black background, four common apps in a row, frosted-glass highlights, looking like Apple TV |
Every step, the agent takes a screenshot of the TV to confirm. It finds which packages to disable on your TV first, and it asks before touching anything you might be using. The README's pitch: "no root, no cable, uninstalls nothing, one-line restore," about 15 minutes.
Free, with only a Buy Me a Coffee link. The first Claude Code link in the README points to the author's employer, "0G Private Computer," with a tracking tag. For the author, the project is personal reputation feeding traffic to the company, not something meant to make money directly.
How the stars came in
Daily GitHub stars: 10-19 1,259 → 10-20 4,091 → 10-21 10,248 → 10-22 17,368 (+7,120 in a single day, the peak) → 10-28 42,550 → 11-06 52,550. Forks: 6,705. Over the last 7 days it gained 7,367; the 7 days before that gained 22,276. It has clearly cooled, but still adds over 600 a day.
Broken down, the source is a chain:
- The original X post (10-17), mentioned above.
- Media pickup chain. 10-18 TechPP, Techaeris and India's Navbharat Times wrote first; 10-19 TechCrunch ran "People are using AI to make their smart TVs dumb again," and Mashable, XDA and It's FOSS followed the same day; 10-20 TechRadar, Tom's Guide, Android Authority, Gizmodo, 404 Media; 10-23 The Verge. The repo's star count climbed steepest from 10-20 to 10-22, which is exactly this wave. There are two angles on the story: "smart TVs getting dumb again" and "vibe coding finally doing something useful." Consumer tech and AI outlets can both run it.
- Reddit and short-video remixes. r/ClaudeAI, r/tcltvs ("my old TCL was too slow, tried this") and r/singularity all have reposts and hands-on tests. r/vibecoding had someone port it to a Samsung TV. On TikTok, adamstewartmarketing's "I hacked my Samsung TV with Claude Code" got 57k views and dhaibuilds got 24k, both naming CleanYourTV directly.
- GitHub's own charts. 10-19 to 10-25, it ranked #1 on trendshift's site-wide weekly chart. The author put the badge and a card reading "412 articles, 54 countries" at the very top of the README, so the repo page itself became the landing page.
- Rename. The first two days it was called tv-vibehack. Around 10-19 it became CleanYourTV, got its own domain cleanyour.tv, and the README was expanded to 11 languages. A name that a journalist or non-developer can say out loud.
Notably, Hacker News did nothing for it: several direct submissions got only 1 to 6 points. The thing that really took off on HN that same week was a manual guide, "An ad-free Android TV" (444 points, 199 comments), which shows the "hate TV ads" sentiment was already there. CleanYourTV is the version the AI crowd picked up.
Someone already built it. Why this one won
| Who | What it is | Scale | How CleanYourTV differs |
|---|---|---|---|
| Projectivy Launcher | Android TV desktop app, on the store for 2020 years | 1.79M installs, +7k in the last 69 days (Google Play, 11-06) | Replaces only the launcher, doesn't touch the system's ad services |
| FLauncher | Open-source TV launcher, 2021 years old | 592k installs (Google Play) | Same as above |
| Universal Android Debloater / UAD-ng | Open-source preinstalled-app remover | 20k / 9.8k stars | Built for phones, GUI package picking, no TV model list, you judge which ones are safe to disable |
| Manual debloat guides on XDA and Reddit | Web | Years | Requires knowing ADB |
| Google TV's built-in "apps-only mode" | System settings | All Google TVs | Only turns off part of it; vendor preinstalls and sponsored slots remain |
By install count it doesn't come close to a fraction of Projectivy. It wins in three ways:
- A story you can get in one image. Everyone has dealt with "setting up my parents' TV" or "watching ads before Netflix." A before-and-after image is enough. It's also a perfect sample of "AI agents can do real work," so people on both sides want to share it.
- It lowers the barrier from "knows ADB" to "can paste a prompt," and uses "disable only, never uninstall, one-click restore" to ease the fear of bricking the TV.
- Users send their data back. Everyone who runs it can submit their TV's "packages to disable" as a PR. So far there are about 2,600 PRs and over a hundred contributors. The README lists 450 models, 122 brands and 31 languages. The broader the coverage, the more it works as an official list, and later builders use that list directly.
The flip side is its real weakness: you need Python, JDK 17–22 and the Android SDK 34. For an ordinary person who has never used Claude Code, that's much harder than going to the store and installing Projectivy. PCWorld, Pocket-lint and PCMag have all published pieces pushing back (PCMag's headline roughly means "no AI needed, just turn it off with the remote"). The author's own README admits this and points people without a coding assistant to a "community app" page.
How far the followers have got
Look-alikes that appeared in the three weeks, grouped by approach:
- Fill the gap it left: an app for people who can't use agents: cleanyourtv-app (Android phones, 1,723 stars), tellyscope (1,626), CleanMyTV (Mac/Windows, 367), TidyTV (on Google Play, 96). The author lists them as official recommendations at cleanyour.tv/app.
- Switch brand or OS: free-my-tv (Google TV / webOS / Tizen, 5,917 stars), dumbtv (Fire TV, 1,966), tv-detox (2,192), tv-home (735).
- Switch language or audience: aerial-tv (a tvOS-style launcher for Chinese-made TVs, built 10-20, about 10k stars), tvhome-zh (a no-build APK), plus localized versions in Russian, Vietnamese and Arabic.
- Name grabbers: cleanyourtv.ai runs a paid companion app with a monthly tier; cleanyourtv.com and clean-your-tv.net were named in the README by the author as "not ours."
What's readable: among the first wave of followers, aerial-tv, which switched audience, got the most, roughly 10k stars within two-plus weeks of being built. Those that built an app to lower the barrier got a thousand or two. Those that moved late mostly stalled at a few hundred (inference: a rough read from build dates and star counts). For TVs specifically, the window has basically closed.
If it were you
Grade B: copying it for TVs is already late. What's worth taking is its format: "hand an AI agent one concrete household device to fix, pair it with a before-and-after image." Applying it to a device nobody has covered yet could reach several thousand stars, but the outcome depends almost entirely on whether the post takes off.
Who it suits: developers with a real household hardware pain point who have fixed it themselves; better if they can tell the story on X or Xiaohongshu and have a few thousand followers; willing to merge PRs and reply to issues every day for the first two weeks.
Who it doesn't suit: anyone wanting to build another TV ad remover (the leader has 52k, and five or six second-tier repos already have several thousand stars); anyone hoping to make money from it (the author only has a donation link, and a paid clone is already competing for the name); people who only write code and won't post. This project's stars came mostly from posts and press, not code (inference: the steepest star days coincide with the press wave).
How to do it:
- Pick a device with many models, where the right action differs per model, and that ordinary people are afraid to touch. Candidates (inference, not checked one by one): routers (disable vendor telemetry, change DNS), car head units, Kindles and e-readers, robot vacuums, printers (bypassing cartridge locks), and smart speakers and fridge screens with ads.
- The deliverable is a PROMPT.md plus a few guarded scripts: back up first, one-click restore, ask before acting, screenshot-confirm each step. CleanYourTV insists the agent must use the repo's scripts and never write its own; backup and restore both live inside those scripts.
- From day one, design the "model list" so users can submit it as a PR when they finish. That's what keeps stars growing afterward.
- Have a path ready for people who can't use agents in the first week (a manual process or an app). Otherwise downstream apps will split that star count.
How to get attention: one post, an emotional hook plus a before-and-after image, with the repo link in the replies. The name should be easy for a journalist to say, paired with its own domain. Once the first article is out, put the badge and press list at the very top of the README. Don't count on HN; it didn't work for this kind of project.
Timing: the "vibe coding fixed XX" angle is still something outlets will write, because CleanYourTV just proved there's a readership for it. Estimate it works until roughly Q1 of year 2027; the more the same format gets used, the harder it becomes to land on TechCrunch.
What would show you read it wrong: ① over the next month or two, look-alikes with the same format (AI agent + some household device) all stall at a few hundred stars, none reaching ten thousand. That would mean CleanYourTV was a one-off, not a format. ② Google or TV makers block pm disable-user in firmware. The TV route would close, and other devices would likely tighten up too. ③ The reverse: someone builds the same format for routers or car head units and it hits ten thousand in a week. Then the format is real, and you should move fast on picking a device.

CleanYourTV (Gathin23/cleanyourtv): why did it hit 52k stars in 20 days
In one line: an open-source repo that gives Claude Code / Codex / Gemini CLI a prompt + script, so an AI agent over the same Wi-Fi uses ADB to "disable" (not uninstall, one-click restorable) the vendor ads, telemetry and preinstalled software on Android TV / Google TV, then installs a 572 KB native desktop that looks like Apple TV. Free, with only Buy Me a Coffee.

- Curve: 10-19 1,259 → 10-20 4,091 → 10-21 10,248 → 10-22 17,368 (single-day peak +7,120) → 10-28 42,550 → 11-06 52,550. Last 7 days +7,367, previous 7 days +22,276. Clearly cooling but still adding 600+ a day (data card daily).
- 10-19~25 that week, #1 site-wide on trendshift (README badge).
- Very heavy community involvement: about 2,600 closed PRs, 100+ contributors (GitHub API, capped at per_page=100). The README says it covers 450 TV models, 122 brands, 31 languages. Most of that is users submitting back their own TV's package lists of what to disable.
2. Competitors
| Name | Where | Launched | Scale | How it differs |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Projectivy Launcher | Android TV(Play) | 2020-08 | 1.79M installs, +7k in the last 69 days (googleplay library 2026-11-06) | Only swaps the desktop, doesn't touch the system; users must go to the store themselves and set the default launcher. | ADB AppControl, forum debloat guides (XDA, Reddit r/AndroidTV) | Windows tools / web | Years | Small niche | High bar: you need to know ADB and judge which packages are safe to disable yourself |
| PCMag: "no AI needed, just turn it off in the remote's settings" | Media / system settings | 2026-10-24 | — | Google TV's built-in "apps-only mode", turning off the ad ID, etc. Only disables part of it |
| cretezy, "An ad-free Android TV" | blogs | 2026-10-19 | HN 444 points / 199 comments | Manual tutorials riding the same wave of sentiment, not tools |
Bottom line: "ad-free desktop" and "ADB debloat" both existed long before, with far larger install bases. It wasn't the first to do this. It was the first to package it as "hand it to an AI agent to do."
3. Growth: how it happened
- One X post sparked it (confirmed). The author, Gathin (@gathint, senior DevRel at 0G Labs, India, about 10K followers at the time) 2026-10-17 08:51 posted: "Vibe coded my parents' TV this afternoon! Ads pop up before Netflix opens. Gave Claude Code the model number, it found the TV over Wi-Fi, deleted 25 Xiaomi packages, and wrote a new home screen. Now it's like an Apple TV." The post had a before-and-after image, and he dropped the repo in the replies. Numbers: 8.72M views, 35.9K likes, 32K bookmarks, 1,695 reposts (fxtwitter API, 2026-11-06). Bookmarks nearly matching likes means people saved it to do the same for their own TV or their parents'.
- Chained media coverage (confirmed). 10-18 TechPP, Techaeris and Navbharat Times wrote first; 10-19 TechCrunch ("People are using AI to make their smart TVs dumb again"), Mashable, XDA, It's FOSS; 10-20 TechRadar, Tom's Guide, Android Authority, Gizmodo, Decrypt, 404 Media; 10-23 The Verge, Slashdot. The repo's own PRESS.md logs 54 countries, 412 articles and 229 videos. The steepest part of the star curve, 10-20~22, lines up with this wave. The angle was "smart TVs made dumb again / the practical use of vibe coding," sitting at the intersection of the AI hype and "people hate TV ads."
- Reddit amplification (confirmed): r/ClaudeAI, r/tcltvs ("old TCL TV too slow, tried this open-source debloat"), r/BestGitHubRepos, r/singularity and others. On r/vibecoding someone ported it to Samsung.
- TikTok / Instagram / YouTube creator remixes (confirmed): on TikTok, adamstewartmarketing's "I hacked my Samsung TV with Claude Code" got 57k views, dhaibuilds 24k, and stevenkhor85 among others named CleanYourTV directly (TikHub search). On YouTube, GEEKrar and others (video table in PRESS.md).
- Hacker News was not a source (confirmed): several direct submissions only got 1~6 points (HN Algolia / Firebase API).
- GitHub Trending self-loop (confirmed): after hitting #1 on the weekly chart, the author put a trendshift badge and a "412 articles" card at the top of the README, using social proof as the landing page.
- Renamed + own domain: it was called tv-vibehack before 10-19, then renamed to CleanYourTV, moved to cleanyour.tv, and added a README in 11 languages to make spreading easier for media and non-developers (first paragraph of PRESS.md).
- Commercial tracking (presence confirmed, effect unverified): the first link in the README's Claude Code options goes to the author's employer, "0G Private Computer," with utm_source=cleanyourtv. There are also Buy Me a Coffee and Product Hunt badges. For the author, the project looks more like personal branding plus traffic for the employer than a product meant to make money.
4. Why it took off
- The story is extremely shareable: "fixing my parents' TV" plus "ads before Netflix" is a pain everyone has felt, and one before/after image tells the whole story. It's also a perfect example of "vibe coding can do something useful," so both the AI crowd and the consumer tech crowd were willing to repost it.
- Timing: over 2026, Google TV and vendor desktop ads got heavier (the same week HN's "An ad-free Android TV" got 444 points, and Decrypt's Samsung tracking research was in the same wave). Combined with agents like Claude Code spreading among regular people, "let AI fix my TV" became feasible for the first time.
- Lowered the bar from "knows ADB" to "pastes a prompt": old debloat methods required knowing which packages were safe to stop. CleanYourTV has the agent discover things on your TV in real time, ask you one by one, and verify with screenshots. Disabling rather than uninstalling, plus a restore script, reduced the fear of "breaking the TV."
- Crowdsourced model lists create a flywheel: every user who runs it can submit their TV's list, roughly 2,600 PRs covering 450 models. The more coverage and the more it looks like an "official database," the more third-party apps build products directly on this list.
- The author is a DevRel: knows how to tell a story, knows how to collect coverage into social proof, and ships updates very fast (three weeks to v3.3.0).
5. Differentiation
There are store apps for "ad-free TV launchers" like Projectivy (1.79M installs), and debloat tools like UAD. CleanYourTV differs on three points: (1) the deliverable is a prompt + script for an AI agent, not an app. It isn't on any app store, so it isn't bound by Google's policies, and it can truly disable vendor desktops and ad services. (2) debloat, new launcher and restore in one flow. (3) model-by-model crowdsourced lists. Point (1) is the main reason it spread, but it isn't about product strength; it's about narrative: "using AI to modify a TV" is itself news. In practice it's a higher bar for ordinary people without Claude Code (they need JDK and Android SDK), which is why PCWorld, Pocket-lint and PCMag all ran pieces pushing back, and the community quickly produced phone and desktop apps to fill the gap.
6. How many people saw it and who is copying it
- Exposure: widely discussed. TechCrunch, The Verge, TechRadar and 412 other articles, the original X post at 8.7M views, and the author's X bio reads "#1 GitHub trending, 53K⭐". Nothing is charged, so there's no revenue question to publicly answer.
- Plenty of copycats already:
- Author-endorsed "community apps": udhaykumarbala/cleanyourtv-app (Android phone, 1,723 stars), man15h/tellyscope (1,626), jolan94/tidytv (on Google Play, 96), wingedpanther/cleanmytv (Mac/Windows, 367).
- Paid lookalikes: cleanyourtv.ai (Mac/Windows/Android companion app with a "Monthly" subscription tier, claims to be based on this project). cleanyourtv.com and clean-your-tv.net were named by the author in the README as "not ours" (issue #1004).
- Similar open-source projects: pengchujin/aerial-tv (tvOS-style launcher for Chinese TVs, created 10-20, about 10k stars), simbasjungles/free-my-tv (Google TV / webOS / Tizen, 5,917), Ansub/tv-detox (2,192), humblemuzzu/dumbtv (Fire TV, 1,966), mihirgupta0900/tv-home (735), mclhm8182/tvhome-zh (APK that needs no compiling), plus Russian, Vietnamese and Arabic localized versions (GitHub search / our github library).
- Projectivy gained +69k installs over the last 7 days, possibly picking up spillover from this "remove TV ads" demand (cause not verified).
7. Takeaways
- Post format of "AI agent + a specific home hardware pain point + before/after image." Uses "for my parents" as the emotional hook.
- The product form can be "a prompt for the agent + a safety-guardrail script." Skip the stores, sidestep platform review, and hand the complexity to the user's own AI.
- Design it so users naturally send data back when they run it (model-list PRs), and an open-source project can grow a data moat.
- The real money is downstream: one-click apps for ordinary people who can't use agents (TidyTV listed on Play, cleanyourtv.ai taking subscriptions). Once the upstream open-source project is known, there's still room to package it downstream, but lookalike sites have already started grabbing names.
8. Still unclear
- How many TVs have actually been cleaned (stars are not usage); how many conversions the 0G referral link brings; whether paid versions like cleanyourtv.ai make real revenue; whether Google or vendors will block the
pm disable-userroute in firmware updates (the README already notes firmware updates restore packages). - No evidence of paid promotion behind the spread of the original X post.
