> OpenAI released the $230 Codex Micro in July. Chinese users immediately looked for an alternative, and the Xiaomi remote fit. SayAll became a product you could install and use right away, and tutorials on Bilibili, Sspai, and X bloggers all named it as the default software. In October it also hit a Weibo trending topic.

# How a 60 Xiaomi TV remote became a Mac tool with 2,500 stars

**What it is** An open-source Mac menu bar tool that turns a 60 Xiaomi TV remote into a wireless microphone and shortcut keypad: speak into it to give commands to Codex and Claude Code.

**Why it took off** OpenAI launched the Codex Micro at 230 USD in July, and the Chinese-speaking community immediately looked for cheaper alternatives, which the Xiaomi remote fit. SayAll became a ready-to-use product, and tutorials on Bilibili, Sspai, and X creators treat it as the default software. In October it also got a Weibo trending topic.

**B** **What you could do** Don't build another Xiaomi remote version in the Chinese market. The best bet is an English-market alternative to Codex Micro (a remote that's buyable overseas and has a mic), or a universal bridge that supports many remotes and works on both Windows and Linux. Follow its playbook: nail the installer and demo video first, then go after tutorial creators.

Grade B: the Chinese market is already crowded, with a dozen copycat projects stuck around a hundred-odd stars. But almost nobody has built in English, and a multi-remote, multi-OS universal bridge is still empty. The opportunity is there, but you're betting that English-speaking buyers will care about the "code with a remote" story, and that overseas remotes can expose their mic audio. Publicly known / widely discussed

SayAll (无线麦) is an open-source Mac menu bar app that connects a Xiaomi Bluetooth remote to your computer: hold to talk, release to type, and the other buttons become shortcuts for driving AI coding tools like Codex and Claude Code. It took off because it rode the story "a ¥60 remote as a ~$230 Codex Micro alternative." Within that story, it was the easiest to install and the most cited in tutorials. Below: how it got started, why a dozen similar projects never caught up, and where to build if you want to try.

### A Weibo post with 380 likes

In 2026 Oct 12, Weibo blogger @旌旗超智能 posted:

> You probably wouldn't guess it, but lately a lot of people are buying this Xiaomi TV Bluetooth remote to do AI programming. It has a built-in mic, and the buttons can be remapped... with the subsidy it's only about ¥60. A bunch of people who racked their brains building VibeCoding products just got beaten by a Xiaomi TV remote.

The post got 380 likes. The next day, #netizens use Xiaomi remotes to direct AI work# and #¥65 Xiaomi remote hacked into a VibeCoding tool# trended on Weibo. That night someone posted that the Xiaomi Bluetooth Remote 2 Pro had sold out. Xiaomi's Xu Jieyun reposted with "this one's catching on too" (per a roundup from 什么值得买 10-21). QQ News, 雷科技, 界面新闻 and 青年报 then covered it. 界面新闻 10-28 reported the remote hit 3 on JD's TV accessories hot-sellers chart.

In every report, the software that turned the remote into an "AI coding tool" was HD838A/remote-mic-app on GitHub, i.e., SayAll (无线麦).

But the Weibo wave actually came late. The repo was created in Jul 22, and by Oct 9 it had 1,678 stars, most gained in 8, September. After Weibo, it added only 15–30 stars a day. The spectators were buying remotes, not starring on GitHub.

### What it actually does

The Xiaomi Bluetooth Remote 2 Pro lists at ¥99, roughly ¥60 after subsidy. It has a metal body, Bluetooth Low Energy, a built-in mic, and a voice key that records only while held. The hardware suits a "button you talk to your computer with."

SayAll handles the path from remote to computer:

- It installs a virtual microphone, so the remote's audio becomes a Mac audio input.

- 13 buttons can be mapped to shortcuts. Common setups: TV key to open Codex, voice key to speak a request, OK key to submit.

- **It doesn't do speech recognition itself.** The setup wizard lets you choose existing input methods like Doubao, WeChat Input, or Typeless, so it doesn't compete with them.

Mac mini users are an unexpected audience. The machine has no mic, so a remote gives you a wireless mic and a shortcut keypad.

### Why July, and why this one

**Timing.** In 2026 Jul 15, OpenAI launched Codex Micro, a $230 dedicated mini keyboard that sold out in 12 hours and was resold on eBay at a markup (Fortune 07-27). Chinese users quickly started hunting for a physical "Vibe Coding button" alternative. SayAll came a week late, creating its repo in Jul 22.

**It wasn't the first.** fanxeon/mi-ao (Jul 14) and nijez/open-voice-bridge (Jul 17) were doing the same thing earlier. They now have only 69 and 61 stars.

**It won by shipping a product, not just a script.** Signed and notarized installer, virtual mic driver, first-run setup wizard, voice test, auto-update, bilingual UI. It also works without a remote, using an iPhone, Apple Watch, or web page as the controller, and includes a prompt that lets Doubao or DeepSeek walk beginners through installation step by step. From 7 to September it shipped 40+ versions, and on 11-06 it was still merging PR #907. When tutorial authors hit a snag, it got fixed fast.

As a result, tutorial writers naturally default to it:

| Timeline | Who | What they said |
|---|---|---|
| 08-11 | Douyin "茂茂说手机" | Among the earliest video tutorials |
| 08-17 | X @cellinlab | "¥60 Vibe voice input tool"; its site claims it was one of the first public recommendations |
| 08-30 | Bilibili "九刘实验室" | "Buy 5 at once! The ¥60 Xiaomi remote became an AI coding tool" |
| 09-16 | Bilibili "The Cola-Not-Sweet Running Focus Diary" | This video sits at the top of the repo README |
| 09-22 | Featured on the homepage of 少数派 | "¥60 to build your vibe coding tool," with SayAll at the core of the whole article |
| 10-08 | X @vista8 (向阳乔木) | "Said to be the best value and most controllable AI voice input hardware" |
| From ¥10-12 | Weibo and mainstream media | See above |

8, plus September's 1,700 stars, came mainly from Bilibili and Douyin tutorials and Chinese AI creators on X. I found no evidence of paid ads. English-speaking communities barely discuss it. This happened only in the Chinese market.

### How big it is now

- GitHub: 11-06 has 2,529 stars, 263 forks, and 92 open issues. It has been speeding up since November: daily new stars went from 17 to 36, 52, 53, 76,11-06, and hit 95 in a single day, the most on record; over the last 7 days it's +361. I couldn't find what started this wave, but **my guess** is it's tied to the 11 remote-control promo and that batch of 11-02 coverage.

- Actual installs: the installer on GitHub has been downloaded about 18k times (GitHub API, 11-06), and the same team's Windows version about 32k times. Since 3 September the official release has shipped from the website, so later numbers aren't visible. These figures are a floor.

- Direction is shifting. The website headline now reads "Not just listening, it also does things for you and remembers for you." A new "Recall" feature stores what you've said locally, organized by app and date, and exposes it to AI clients via MCP. It's trying to move from "remote driver" to "personal record of voice input."

### Who's following, and how they're doing

At least a dozen GitHub projects do the same thing, all with double- or triple-digit stars (11-06):

| Project | Repo created | Stars | What's different |
|---|---|---|---|
| ZSTDJan/windows-remote-mic-app | 09-01 | 141 | Windows version, copied name, added Google remote support |
| cuicui-V5/RemoteMapper-ESP32 | 09-01 | 141 | Uses ESP32 for the bridge, fixes three dead keys on Windows |
| richlearntodo-debug/vibe-flow | 08-22 | 119 | Windows only |
| HZDavy/MoteDeck | 10-24 | 115 | Windows, adds Mi Home device control |
| leowzz/axonkey | 08-23 | 110 | Literally called "Codex Micro shortcut alternative" |
| Sorasukiawa/VoxPalm | 10-19 | 102 | Mac, supports multiple remotes and wireless mics, +44 in the last 7 days |

The top project has 18 times the stars of the runner-up. This is the tutorial effect: users see "¥60 remote" first, then follow a tutorial to SayAll, and later entrants struggle to get written into tutorials. Note that MoteDeck and VoxPalm were both created in late October and each reached over a hundred stars in about two weeks, so the buzz does spill over to followers, just not much.

Also, on 小红书 and 闲鱼, people are already bundling the remote with the open-source software and reselling it for ¥89.

### If it were you

**Verdict:** In the Chinese market, "Xiaomi remote → Mac / Windows" is too late. Even done well, it gets about a hundred stars. The real gaps are what the story hasn't covered: the English market, other cheap hardware, and the steps it handles poorly.

**Good fit:** developers who have written native macOS or Windows apps and dealt with Bluetooth HID and virtual audio drivers. Someone who can make a 15-second demo video and post it on X or Reddit does even better.

**Bad fit:** anyone who wants to head-on clone SayAll in the Chinese market. It has a website, a community, and media coverage, and it shipped 7+ versions from 40 to September and still merges code daily. Also skip it if you only write scripts and won't build an installer or setup wizard. The starred projects in this category won because they "work right after install."

**How to do it (pick one):**

1. **English alternative.** English speakers are also chasing Codex Micro, but Xiaomi remotes are hard to buy abroad. Switch to a remote that's easy to get overseas and has a built-in mic (Fire TV, Google TV, Apple Siri Remote, etc. **Guess** , test first to see which one exposes mic audio), write the README in English, and title it directly against Codex Micro. Note that SayAll already added the Siri Remote to Plus in 2.0, so this path isn't completely empty.

2. **Fix what it does poorly.** The stars on copycat projects mostly come from Windows (the same team's Windows installer has about 32k GitHub downloads, so demand is real). I didn't see a Linux version among these. SayAll officially supports only the Xiaomi 2 / 2 Pro. There's room for a universal bridge that works with any remote on any OS.

3. **Copy its playbook with a different hardware.** Find something cheap, mass-produced, and already in many people's homes. Write software that gives it a new purpose, and let the hardware's own buzz do the marketing.

**How to get users:** follow SayAll's path. In the first week, ship an installable package and a demo video. Send the repo to tutorial creators (in English, that means AI coding YouTubers and X accounts). Put third-party tutorial videos at the top of the README. Provide a prompt that says "have Codex install this for you" to lower the bar for beginners.

**Deadline:** Codex Micro's heat and this "alternative" wave are still going, so ship the English version before the end of December. If you wait until 2027, the "Codex Micro alternative" angle will be stale.

**Bad call:** ① It's been out 30 days, pitched to two or three English-language bloggers, and it still hasn't reached 50 stars. The English crowd isn't buying "write code with a remote control." ② OpenAI drops Codex Micro to a few dozen dollars, or ships a phone app as the remote, and the cheap-substitute angle falls apart. ③ Xiaomi or Apple blocks the trick with a firmware update (Jiemian has already reported that disconnects and broken mappings show up after system upgrades).>

## Why the wireless mic app SayAll (HD838A/remote-mic-app) took off

> Research date 2026-11-06. Sources: our github database (repo_day / repo_profile), GitHub API (releases, commits), the project README and sayall.app, and original media articles.

### One line

A macOS menu bar tool (SwiftUI, GPL-3.0, open-core) that connects the microphone and buttons of a **Xiaomi Bluetooth remote 2 / 2 Pro** (a TV remote, list price ¥99, about ¥60 on Xianyu or with subsidies) to a Mac: hold the voice key to talk, release to type, and map the other keys to shortcuts for feeding prompts to Codex / Claude Code / Cursor.

**Takeaway** : It didn't break out on its own. It rode an existing hit narrative: "A ¥60 Xiaomi remote = a Vibe Coding gadget that stands in for the $230 OpenAI Codex Micro." In this story the hardware is Xiaomi's, but on the software side it was the most complete and earliest project tutorials wrote in, so every tutorial, Weibo post and media piece sent traffic its way.

### 1. Data

- Repo created 2026-07-22; by 11-06 it had 2,529 stars, 263 forks and 92 open issues (data card). The GitHub API read 2,576 stars on the day.

- Trend (our github database repo_day): 10-09 it had 1,678 stars, **most of them from 8–September** ; from 10-10 to 10-20 it added 15–30 per day; 10-20→10-28 +142 total; it accelerated again from 11-01: 17→36→52→53→76→95/day (11-06 was the biggest daily gain observed). Last 7 days: +361.

- Actual downloads (GitHub Releases asset download counts, read via the GitHub API 11-06): v1.9.21 (released 09-03) installers dmg/zip about 12.5k; all GitHub release installers combined about 18k; the Sparkle update check file appcast.xml fetched 178k times (update polling, not a user count, but it shows installs are still running). After 09-03 official releases moved to download.sayall.app, so later download numbers aren't visible.

- Windows version (same team, GetSayAll/remote-mic-app-windows, repo created 08-26, 227 stars): installer downloads about 32k (GitHub API).

- iOS companion app "无线麦" (id6797208067) listed 2026-10-08, free, 0 ratings (iTunes lookup cn; our appstore database's us store also shows 0). iOS is not its main battlefield.

### 2. Competitors

| Name | Where | Launched | Scale | How it differs from SayAll |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| OpenAI Codex Micro | Hardware | 2026-07-15 | $230, sold out in 12 hours at launch, resold on eBay at a premium (Fortune 07-27) | Official dedicated keyboard + joystick, no mic; SayAll's whole story is its "¥60 stand-in" |
| Insta360 × ByteDance TRAE Mic Air "Vibe Coding" microphone bundle | Hardware | 2026-04-27 | ¥319 (Sina Finance) | Better pickup, but no mappable physical buttons; you buy them separately |
| Typeless / Wispr Flow / Doubao input / WeChat input | Software | Already existed | Big | They handle "sound → text". SayAll doesn't do recognition; it only does "remote → virtual mic + keys". It's their upstream accessory, not a competitor (the wizard lets you pick them directly). |
| fanxeon/mi-ao | Open source | 2026-07-14 | 69 stars | Did the same thing earlier (RC003 × Codex for macOS), but never made it a product |
| nijez/open-voice-bridge | Open source | 2026-07-17 | 61 stars | Also earlier than SayAll, pure native bridging with no wizard or ecosystem |
| leowzz/axonkey | Open source | 2026-08-23 | 110 stars | Calls itself a "Codex Micro shortcut stand-in," Win/Mac |
| ZSTDJan/windows-remote-mic-app | Open source | 2026-09-01 | 141 stars | Windows copycat, copies the name outright, adds a Google remote and Quicker |

| Sorasukiawa/VoxPalm (Clap) | Open source | 2026-10-19 | 102 stars, +44 in the last 7 days | Mac, "hold to talk, release to type," supports multiple remotes and wireless mics |
| HZDavy/MoteDeck | Open source | 2026-10-24 | 115 stars | Windows, adds Xiaomi Home control |
| jinzongma/apple-tv-remote-for-mac | Open source | 2026-07-21 | 56 stars | Uses the Siri Remote (SayAll 2.0 already made the Siri Remote a Plus feature) |
| Xiaohongshu / Xianyu "remote + software" marked-up bundles | E-commerce | From ¥2026-09 | Not verified | Packages open-source software and sells it for ¥89 (X @safaricheung mentioned it; Leikeji also mentioned a "bundle package") |

(Star counts from our github database 11-06.) **Takeaway: There are at least ten open-source projects doing the same thing. SayAll isn't the first (mi-ao and open-voice-bridge came a week earlier), but it's an order of magnitude ahead of the number two (2,529 vs ≤141).**

### 3. Where users came from (timeline)

1. **Platform event / timing** : 2026-07-15 OpenAI launched Codex Micro ($230, sold out instantly), and the Chinese community saw a wave of DIY "Vibe Coding physical keys" (quoted from the Sspai article); at the same time Mac mini users lacked a mic, so voice-written prompts became a must-have (36Kr and Smzdm both made this point). SayAll's repo was created 07-22, one week after this wave.

2. **Chinese X AI KOLs (8–October)** : @cellinlab "¥60 Vibe voice input gadget" 08-17 (the official site calls it "one of the earliest public recommendations"); @binghe 10-06; @vista8 (向阳乔木) 10-08 "reportedly the best value and most controllable AI voice input hardware… found an open-source app called 无线麦 that lets Codex install it"; @andynotbot 10-21; @okooo5km and @wlzh wrote long posts.

3. **Bilibili / Douyin / YouTube tutorials** : Douyin "Mao Mao Says Phone" 08-11; Bilibili "Jiu Liu Lab", "Bought 5 of them! A ¥60 Xiaomi remote became an AI coding tool" 08-30; "The Cola-Not-Sweet Running Focus Diary" 09-16 (the video is pinned at the top of the README); Chinese YouTube tutorials. This is the main driver of the roughly 8 stars it got from 1,700 to September.

4. **Sspai Matrix homepage pick** 09-22 "Build your vibe coding gadget for ¥60": the full article is built around SayAll as the core software, with troubleshooting tips.

5. **Went viral on Weibo (10-12)** : @旌旗超智能 posted it and got 380 likes. The next day #NetizensBuyXiaomiRemoteToCommandAI# and #¥65 Xiaomi remote turned VibeCoding tool# trended on Weibo, and that night people posted photos of the remote selling out. Xiaomi exec Xu Jieyun 10-13 reposted it with "this one's catching on too" (Smzdm 10-21). Then QQ News, Sina, Sohu, Leikeji (10-18), Jiemian (10-28, ranked #3 on JD's TV accessories hot list), and Youth Daily / Haojiyou (11-02).
    - Note: this media wave gave little lift to GitHub stars (only 15–30 per day after 10-12), because readers were ordinary people buying remotes, not GitHub users. But it brought real installs and potential Plus paying users.

6. **Double 11 + second media wave (November)** : after Youth Daily and Haojiyou 11-02, the daily star gain rose from 17 to 95 per day. The cause is unverified (possibly a double-11 remote promotion plus new tutorials).

7. **Owned marketing** : the official site has a "What people are saying" media page listing 16 third-party reports; the README links to a Bilibili video and a 3D-printed case (MakerWorld); the "one-click AI install" prompt lets Doubao / DeepSeek / Codex install it for the user, which lowers the barrier for beginners. This amplifies the tutorial spread.

8. No evidence of paid ads or TikTok / Reddit / HN presence (searched the English x-radar corpus for sayall / remote-mic-app: 0 hits each). This is a pure Chinese-circle phenomenon.

### 4. Why it took off

- **Rode an existing hit hardware item** : the Xiaomi remote 2 Pro itself costs ¥99 (around ¥60 with subsidy), metal body, BLE, built-in mic, dedicated voice key, hold-to-talk. The hardware fits the "Codex Micro alternative" slot exactly. Users are drawn in by the "¥60 remote", and tutorials point them to SayAll. The software is the necessary piece of that hit narrative.

- **Built a product, not a script** : notarized pkg installer, virtual mic driver (MiRemoteV 2ch / SayAll), first-run setup wizard, voice test, Sparkle auto-update, Chinese and English UI, iPhone / Apple Watch / web / WeChat mini-program as backup remotes, even an AI prompt that installs it for you. Similar open-source projects were mostly drivers or scripts. Sspai, Zhihu, and long X posts all wrote it up as the default, so the winner takes most.

- **Very fast iteration** : from 7 through September it shipped 40+ releases, and on 11-06 it was still merging PRs (#907), with 92 open issues. When tutorial authors hit a snag, the project gets fixed quickly, and reputation keeps building.

- **Doesn't touch recognition, just the bridge** : it doesn't compete with Doubao / WeChat Input / Typeless. It treats them as the ecosystem, so WeChat Input's "hold a shortcut to talk", which Chinese users already know, works straight away.

- **How the money comes back** : open-core. The public GPL repo contains only the "host"; the paid parts (membership, orders, key profiles, combo actions) live in a private package (stated in the repo's test docs). From 2.0, "common phrases, key profiles, Apple remote voice, and iPhone / Apple Watch / WeChat mini-program connections" require Plus. Sold via **WeChat virtual payment or redemption codes** , as a one-time purchase per major version, no auto-renewal. Price not found on the public page (unverified).

### 5. Differentiation

Versus similar open-source projects: **completeness and distribution** . A notarized installer + wizard + auto-update + multi-device backup remotes + website + community + media page makes it the only one that works out of the box. Versus hardware competitors (Codex Micro, Insta360 Mic Air): **it costs an order of magnitude less** , and that gap comes from the Xiaomi hardware, not from SayAll itself. So what made it take off is the "Xiaomi remote alternative" narrative plus being the best software in that narrative. The latter is why it beat a dozen similar open-source projects, but it is not the source of the demand.

### 6. How many people have seen it

**Already widely discussed** : covered by Jiemian, Youth Daily, Sspai, Leitech, SMZDM, QQ News, Sina, and Sohu. Hit a Weibo trending topic, a Xiaomi executive responded, and Chinese AI accounts on X (such as Xiangyang Qiaomu) shared it. Revenue not public. Over a dozen copycats (see the comparison table), and some sellers on Xiaohongshu / Xianyu are marking up "remote + software" bundles. The Chinese-language niche is already crowded.

### 7. What to borrow

- Find a **cheap, mass-produced piece of hardware that people already own or can easily buy** , then write software that gives it a new purpose. The hardware's buzz does the distribution for you, and tutorial authors do the SEO.

- Making a "cheaper alternative" within a week of a hot, expensive new product (Codex Micro) gives the narrative a natural footing.

- Open-source host + private paid modules + WeChat Pay one-time purchase: open source earns trust and tutorial traffic, while the paywall sits on advanced features.

- Turning "what the media says" into a website page and handing installation to an AI prompt means even non-technical users can install it. That's what let an open-source tool escape the programmer circle.

### 8. Uncertain

- Plus price, paying users, and revenue: none found.

- Website download numbers after 09-03 are not visible; the ~18k GitHub package downloads are only a lower bound.

- The direct trigger for the star growth accelerating again from 11-03 is unverified.

- Whether Xiaomi will ship an official "computer mode" or block the protocol is the biggest platform risk (Jiemian mentioned occasional disconnects / broken mappings after system updates).
