# A table of "what it replaces" earned 7,000 stars: Puter's Everything project, and the gap it leaves

**What it is** A GitHub repo with 51 free web apps you can open and use right away, each stating which paid software it replaces (Excel, Photoshop, AutoCAD, Salesforce...).

**Why it took off** It rode October's "AI rewrites all paid software" conversation. A slogan plus a comparison table is easy for X and Chinese recommendation accounts to repost as-is, and it had Puter's existing 44K-star reputation behind it.

**C** **How you could ride it** Stop trying to "rewrite everything." Pick the thinnest row in their table (say electronics design, accounting, or vertical SaaS, or a domestic Chinese paid tool) and build it deeply as a web app. Write a "replaces X → Try it" README in their style and actively hand it to X repost accounts and Chinese recommendation accounts.

Grade C: the distribution playbook is worth studying, but this lane is crowded. ArtCraft, YC-backed EveryApp, and piles of clone skill packs and single-product replacement repos are already there, and the traffic here depended on Puter's name and the founder's feud, which followers can't replicate. Going deep on a single product can earn stars, but it's a slow grind like established open-source alternatives, and the hype window is likely only a month or two. Being discussed in niche circles

Data 2026-10-14 → 2026-11-08 (26 days, 26 observations). Points before 10-28 come from deeply / archive backfill, not every day has one

On Oct 31, Nariman Jelveh, founder of the web OS Puter, posted on X: "My Chinese followers, can anyone tell me where Puter blew up on the Chinese internet?" That day his new repo HeyPuter/everything gained 730 stars in a single day, its biggest day since it was created 18 days earlier, and he had no idea where these people were coming from. Here's the breakdown: what the repo is, how the stars came in waves, who else is competing for the same path, and which routes are still open if you want to pull stars with a similar project.

### What it is: 51 "Try it" buttons

Everything is a single repo with the slogan "rewrite the world's software from scratch, and open-source it." The README is one long table: app name on the left, "replaces" in the middle, "Try it | Source" on the right. 11-06 counted 51 rows in total, 46 of them tools and 5 of them small board and card games:

| App | What the table says it replaces |
|---|---|
| Spreadsheet / Documents / Presentation | Excel, Word, PowerPoint (and Google's and Apple's equivalents) |
| Photo Studio / Video Studio | Photoshop; CapCut, Premiere, Final Cut, DaVinci |
| CAD / Parametric / Circuits | AutoCAD; SolidWorks, Fusion; Altium, Eagle |
| Teamchat / CRM / Help Desk | Slack; Salesforce, HubSpot; Zendesk, Intercom |
| Childcare / Fleet / Legal / Property Management | brightwheel; Fleetio, Samsara; Clio; Buildium, AppFolio |

Each app gets its own subdomain (spreadsheet.puter.com, pdf.puter.com, and so on). Open one and it runs in the browser, no install needed. All of it is JavaScript under the MIT license, and you can clone it and run `npm run dev` yourself. The README comes in English, Simplified Chinese, and Spanish.

The code was written almost entirely by one person: the founder made 275 commits, the runner-up 21 (GitHub, 11-06). Recent commit messages read "adversarial review round 4" and "158 fixes," clearly batch output from AI coding agents. On Hacker News, people also pointed out that Claude shows up among the contributors.

### How the stars came in: every jump matches someone reposting it

Created in October 13, by November 6 it had about 7,300 stars and 752 forks (the GitHub page reads between 7,258 and 7,420 depending on when it was checked). Over the last 7 days it gained +2,076, and in the 7 days before that +1,625, and it's still accelerating. The curve doesn't rise smoothly. It climbs in steps, and each step lines up with an event:

| Date | star | What happened |
|---|---|---|
| 10-13 | Launched | The Hacker News launch only got 8 points. The same day, open-source lawyer Heather Meeker published a blog post, "Puter's 'Everything' Project Changes Everything," comparing it with ArtCraft, which was also trending then. |
| 10-16 | By 10-17, already 1,627 | X big account @RoundtableSpace (Mario Nawfal) posted "someone is rewriting the world's paid software as free open-source apps," with 555 likes and about 80K views. |
| 10-21 | +721 that day | Chinese GitHub recommendation account @GitHub_Daily posted about it, with 849 likes and about 80K views. Chinese "GitHub daily trending" articles also picked it up. |
| 10-26 | About +150 | Second HN run, titled with just one word, "Everything." 60 points and 59 comments, mostly complaints. |
| 10-28 | +702 that day | The founder quoted EveryApp's launch post, which was backed by YC: "Man what a dick, at least change the name a little bit." 203 likes and 53K views, and the comments piled onto YC. |
| 10-31 | +730 that day | A batch of Chinese accounts posted it at once (some called it the "Ten Thousand Things Project"). Even the founder isn't sure which channel drove it. |
| From ¥11-03 | Daily +250~320 | It's FOSS published a long hands-on review, and open-source roundup accounts in Japan, Korea, and Taiwan picked it up one after another. |

Two things stand out. First, Puter's own HN launch barely did anything; the real push came from reposts by big third-party accounts. Those accounts repost it because "rewriting all the world's software" fits in one sentence, and the comparison table makes a ready-made post when screenshotted. Second, Chinese-language audiences drove the two biggest jumps (10-21 and 10-31), so a Simplified Chinese README is not a nice-to-have.

### Why it took off

**It caught the month's buzz.** At the end of September, ArtCraft used Claude to rewrite 7 Adobe apps as Rust desktop programs. It hit 180 points on HN and got covered by Tom's Hardware, and "AI can rewrite any paid software" became the dev talk of October. Everything 10-13 entered just as the buzz peaked, and law blogs and HN commenters compared the two directly.

**Breadth is itself shareable.** ArtCraft is one repo per app and focuses on Adobe. Everything stretches from office, creative, and engineering tools all the way to daycare management, fleet maintenance, and law firm management, vertical SaaS. A 51-row table is something anyone wants to screenshot.

**It works right away.** ArtCraft requires downloading a desktop program. Everything has a "Try it" button on every row. Even the people criticizing it on HN admit "it loads as soon as you click."

**It has an existing platform.** Puter's main repo has 44K stars, and It's FOSS opened its write-up with "Remember Puter?" Media are willing to cover it, and readers trust that it isn't some one-off hack. (Interestingly, even though Everything took off, Puter's main repo still only gains 5 to 30 stars a day, so the traffic didn't flow back.)

**Got into a fight.** 10-28 founder publicly accused EveryApp of copying the name. Same day, +702, about the same spike the GitHubDaily thread brought.

### Where it falls short

Stars bought the idea that "this sounds cool," not "I'm using it." The most common comments under the second HN post were "slop-code knockoffs" (AI-generated imitations). One chip designer tried Circuits and said it knows nothing about EDA, and others asked "Didn't LibreOffice already exist?" and "All JavaScript?" It's FOSS's hands-on review also noted: the PDF editor misidentifies text blocks when editing existing text and the layout breaks. Progress can't be saved without logging into a Puter account, and some apps (Notes, for example) demand a login as soon as you open them. The free account gets only 25MB of cloud storage, and paid plans start at $10/month.

In other words, Everything is essentially Puter's user acquisition funnel: 51 names from big-company brands pulling people over to puter.com to sign up. It's shallow in every single product, and there's no public data on real usage.

### Who else is in this lane

| Project | Scale (GitHub stars) | How it differs from Everything |
|---|---|---|
| ArtCraft / storytold series (PhotoCraft, PdfCraft, WordCraft...) | PhotoCraft 77K, PdfCraft 20K, WordCraft 17K | The origin of this wave. Offline Rust desktop programs, one repo per app, aiming for feature parity |
| EveryApp(YC F26) | every-app 751; the same team's open-seo 26.5K | Nearly the same slogan, but started from a single product (an open-source SEO tool), and the single product earned a lot of stars |
| Skill packs from storytold/craft-anything, replica-skill and similar that "teach AI to clone any app" | craft-anything 15K, replica-skill about 7,800 | They sell the method, not the finished product |
| A batch of "open-source X alternative" single-product repos (Canva alternatives, Figma alternatives, IntelliJ alternatives...) | Mostly small | One repo per category, copycats following along |
| LibreOffice, GIMP, FreeCAD, KiCad, Penpot and other long-established open-source alternatives | years of accumulation | deep, scattered, need to install |

The "rewrite everything" slogan is already taken by two players: a parent brand with 44k stars and a YC-backed company. A third "everything" would just look like a copycat.

### If it were you

**One-line verdict:** Stop building "rewrite everything." If you want stars, pick the row in the table it does most shallowly, go deep on that one alone, and copy its distribution playbook. The path works, but it's no longer new.

**Who it's for:** Developers who already know one vertical software category well (EDA, accounting, property management, clinic systems) who can spot where the Everything row is fake, and who can use AI coding tools to ship a version that industry insiders won't laugh at within a few weeks. EveryApp's open-seo is the proof: one product done properly earned more stars than 50 shallow ones (26.5k vs 7,000).

**Who it's not for:** Anyone betting on breadth (you don't have Puter's audience, and 51 shallow apps will just draw "slop" criticism); anyone counting on a Hacker News launch to drive traffic (Everything's own HN post got only 8 points); anyone who can code but won't go pitch their work to X and Chinese recommendation accounts.

**How to do it:**

- Pick categories that are "expensive to buy, with old or no open-source alternatives, and lots of insiders." In the Everything table, Circuits, Parametric, Building Design, Accounting and Childcare are still just shells (inference, based on HN comments and It's FOSS hands-on tests).

- Switching language or audience is another gap: the table is all Western software. An open-source web version benchmarked against domestic paid software (DingTalk, WeCom, YiTu, various accounting and inventory tools) would likely get more shares from Chinese-language recommendation accounts (inference).

- Web version, zero install, a demo on the homepage that opens immediately; the README's first screen should be "replaces X → Try it," with both Chinese and English versions ready.

**How to acquire users:** Follow Everything's curve: on launch day, have a post ready that can be screenshotted, plus a comparison image, and send it proactively to English repost accounts on X and Chinese recommendation accounts like @GitHub_Daily. Use HN and Reddit as supplements, not the main channel. Industry blogs, podcasts and forums (hardware communities, accounting communities) bring in people who actually use the product, more than general developer circles do.

**When to move:** The "AI rewrites paid software" trend took off in October. At the current pace of new copycat repos appearing every day, the buzz will probably last until year-end (inference). Ideally, ship the first version before mid-December.

**Signs you've misread it:** ① Everything's star growth over the last 7 days drops below 500, and the ArtCraft series slows down at the same time. The trend is fading, and single-product replacements return to the slower pace of established open-source projects. ② Vendors like Adobe or Autodesk send legal letters or DMCA takedowns to these repos. The risk of this path has changed. ③ The reverse case: Everything suddenly goes deep in one area (such as CAD or Circuits) and people on HN say "it actually works." It's patching its weak spot, and the gap in that area closes.

## Why HeyPuter/everything took off

> In one line: the Puter team (web OS Puter, main repo 44k stars) built, in a single repo with AI coding, 50 browser apps, each benchmarked against a paid product (Excel, Photoshop, AutoCAD, Slack, Salesforce, and more). MIT licensed, and you can click "Try it" to use it right away on *.puter.com. It rode the wave ArtCraft started of "AI clean-room rewrites of big-company software", and a "which product does this replace" comparison table got reposted again and again by aggregator accounts on X. 2026-10-13

### 1. Data

- Created 2026-10-13, has 2026-11-06 stars as of 7,258 (our github repo; the GitHub API checked live that day gives 7,420), 752 forks. +7 over the last 2,076 days, +7 over the first 1,625 days; peak single-day gain +730 (10-31). Under 60 days old, it hasn't made trending, which means nothing.

- Commits are almost all from founder Nariman Jelveh (jelveh): 275 commits, second place Salazareo with 21 (GitHub contributors API). Recent commit messages are all things like "adversarial review round 4" and "158 fixes," clearly batch output from AI agents. HN comments also point out Claude is one of the contributors.

- Other repos in the same org didn't take off: HeyPuter/puter gains +5~30 stars per day, HeyPuter/builder gains +1~9 per day (github repo_day).

### 2. Growth curve and the events behind each jump (our github repo + live X lookups + HN)

| Date | Star changes | what happened |
|---|---|---|
| 10-13 | Date | HN post "Puter's Mission to Open-Source Everything" got only 8 points; open-source business lawyer Heather Meeker published a blog post the same day, "Puter's 'Everything' Project Changes Everything," placing it inside the narrative that followed ArtCraft |
| 10-16 | By 10-17 there were 1,627 | @RoundtableSpace (Mario Nawfal) posted "Someone is rebuilding all the world's paid software as free, open-source apps": 555 likes, 103 reposts, 80k views; on LinkedIn Ram Maheshwari and Jakub Polec reshared it |
| 10-20/21 | 10-21 that day +721 | @GitHub_Daily (a leading Chinese GitHub recommendation account) posted, 849 likes, 165 reposts, 80k views; Tencent Cloud's "GitHub Daily Trending Briefing 10-16" also picked it up |
| 10-26 | +150 | HN's second run, titled with just one word, "Everything": 60 points, 59 comments, mostly complaints: "slop-code knockoffs," "Circuits shows no understanding of the EDA field," "what about LibreOffice?", "all in JavaScript?" |
| 10-28 | +702 | The founder quoted EveryApp's (YC F26) launch post saying "Man what a dick, at least change the name a little bit": 203 likes, 53k views; the replies piled on with "yc scammer" and "YC is funding pirates." The fight itself became the exposure |
| 10-30/31 | 10-31 +730 | Chinese repost accounts piled in too (@Ryrenz, @weiwei2018831 "Wanwu Plan," @andrea_denkse and others). The founder posted asking "someone in my Chinese followers, tell me where Puter is catching on in the Chinese internet": he himself didn't know where the traffic came from |
| From ¥11-03 | Daily +250~320 | It's FOSS published a long hands-on test (11-03); "open source today" accounts in Korea, Japan and Taiwan picked it up one after another |

Conclusion: every jump lines up with a third-party big account or a community event. Growth came from "a one-liner that explains it + a comparison table easy to screenshot" driving organic reposts, not paid acquisition. The Chinese-language community contributed a lot (the README has a Simplified Chinese version, and the GitHubDaily post was one of the single largest pushes).

### 3. Competitors

| Name | Where | Timeline | Scale | How it differs from Everything |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| ArtCraft / storytold series (PhotoCraft, PdfCraft, FilmCraft, WordCraft, CADCraft…) | Open source (Rust desktop apps) | From ¥2026-09-30 | PhotoCraft 77k stars, PdfCraft 20k, WordCraft 17k, craft-anything 15k (github repos); HN 180 points, covered by Tom's Hardware | It's the origin and the leader of this wave. Pure Rust, offline desktop, positioned on "clean-room rewrite + 100% feature parity," one library per app. Everything is a JS web app, all in one monorepo, works out of the box in the browser, and scope runs from Adobe to B2B SaaS |
| EveryApp (YC F26, every-app/every-app; the team also built open-seo) | Open source | 2025-11 repo created, publicly released before and after 2026-10-27 | every-app 751 stars; open-seo 26.5k | Nearly the same slogan ("make every SaaS open source"), YC backing, starting from a single product, OpenSEO. Everything shipped 50 apps at once, winning on "everything" and "fast" |
| LibreOffice / OnlyOffice / Nextcloud, Penpot, GIMP, FreeCAD, KiCad and other long-standing open-source alternatives | open source / self-hosted | for years now | large user bases, mature ecosystems | They're deep but scattered and require installs; Everything is shallow, but it's all in one place, zero install, click and use |
| Photopea, the Zoho suite, Google Workspace free tier | Web / big companies | Already around | Huge scale | Free web versions already exist; Everything's only extra is the "open source + MIT + self-hosted" pitch |
| "Teach AI to clone any app" skill packs like Jakeschincariol/replica-skill, storytold/craft-anything, alextnetto/res | Open source | 2026-10 | replica-skill 7,759 star | They sell the method (skills); Everything sells finished products |

### 4. How it makes money / where the money comes back from

- Apps are hosted on *.puter.com. You can use and export without logging in, but saving progress, using AI features (like video subtitles), and some apps (Notes) require a Puter account. Free 25MB cloud storage, paid plans from $10/month (100GB) (It's FOSS hands-on screenshots).

- So Everything is effectively a user-acquisition funnel for the Puter platform: 50 SEO/social entry points targeting big-brand names → Puter account → storage and AI subscriptions. Revenue is not public.

### 5. Why it took off

1. **Timing** : In early October, ArtCraft's Claude-rewritten 7 Adobe apps went viral (HN 180 points, covered by Tom's Hardware), and "AI can rewrite every paid software" became the topic of the month. Everything 10-13 followed, and Heather Meeker wrote about the two together the same day.

2. **A one-line ambition + a comparison table** : "Rewrite all the world's software" plus "X is an alternative to Y" tables, which repost accounts could copy almost verbatim. The RoundtableSpace and GitHubDaily posts each got 80k views, matching two big jumps.

3. **Zero-friction trial** : Every app has a "Try it" link straight to the web version. Even people on HN who criticized it admitted "it loads on click", in contrast to ArtCraft, which requires downloading a Rust desktop program.

4. **An existing base** : The Puter main repo has 44k stars, and It's FOSS covered Puter years ago, so media were willing to write about it and users trusted it wasn't a one-person throwaway project.

5. **Conflict marketing** : The founder publicly attacked YC-backed EveryApp for "copying the name", gaining +702 the same day.

### 6. Differentiation, and whether that's why it broke out

The differentiation is "breadth + runs on the web + one repo": 50 apps span office, creative, engineering and B2B verticals (daycare, fleet, legal, POS), all openable directly in the browser. That breadth is exactly why it spreads, since it's shareable material that can be listed and screenshotted. But this differentiation is shallow (HN users who tried Circuits said they knew nothing about the field), and there's no evidence of retention or real usage. Stars reflect "this idea is cool", not "I'm using it".

### 7. How many people saw it

- No public revenue; not on TrustMRR.

- Covered by It's FOSS, HN (twice), Mario Nawfal, GitHubDaily, large LinkedIn accounts, and multi-country "open source today" accounts. The "AI clean-room rewrite" niche it sits in is already widely discussed (ArtCraft made Tom's Hardware), and it's spreading in developer circles and Chinese GitHub circles.

- Copycats have already appeared: EveryApp (YC F26), storytold/craft-anything, replica-skill, plus a batch of single-product "open-source X alternative" repos (doory for Canva, desigma for Figma, openidea for IntelliJ, etc. on GitHub).

### 8. What others can borrow

- Using AI to batch-build web tools that "clone a well-known paid product", one subdomain per app; READMEs written as a table of "app → what it replaces → Try it", where the table itself is the promotional material.

- After launch, actively pitch Chinese GitHub recommendation accounts and the big repost accounts on X; prepare a multilingual README.

- Use open source for acquisition, monetize through storage and AI features, not by selling software.

- Ride the month's hot narrative (ArtCraft), launching within the peak week or two of the trend.

### 9. Uncertain

- Real usage, signup conversion and paying-user counts are unverified. Stars and real users may be very far apart.

- Data between 10-13 and 10-16 is missing (our database only has day-by-day data from 10-17 onward); which Chinese channel drove the 10-31 jump (RedNote, WeChat Official Accounts?) is unverified, and the founder is asking that too.

- Whether Adobe, Autodesk and others will send legal letters is unknown.
