BIMCraft: an open-source BIM clone of Revit built by a Brazilian student, 22 days, 949 stars, pushed by architecture creators

What it is A free, open-source building modeling app. The interface and shortcuts copy Revit, it reads and writes IFC, opens .rvt files, and AI agents can model through commands.

Why it took off Architects already resent Revit's subscription of about $3,005 a year. It looks exactly like Revit and opens .rvt files, which handed architecture YouTube and LinkedIn creators ready-made headlines, and a new release every week gave them something to film.

BHow you could ride it Stop building open-source Revit. Look for expensive pro software that's been named in App Requests and industry forums but nobody has built yet. Match the look one-to-one, use reading its proprietary format as the hook, ship installers for all three platforms, and pitch it to creators in that industry rather than developer circles.

Grade B: it shows an unbranded individual can get close to a thousand stars through industry creators, and followers can get the same. But BIM is already held by three players, Craft-style clone repos number in the hundreds, and the window is narrowing. Switching industries also means understanding that trade. Whispers in the niche

In Oct 2026 evening (UTC) 11, a user named matbrgz opened an issue in ArtCraft's GitHub repo titled "[App Request] BIMCraft – open BIM for architecture (Revit / ArchiCAD alternative)". He explained BIM in a sentence: "You're not drawing lines, you're building a house out of smart parts: walls, doors, slabs. Change one wall and plan, section and 3D all change together." He also checked the price: Autodesk Revit runs about $3,005 per seat per year. Four days later, in Oct 15, Pedro Medeiros (GitHub user IPedrax), a computer engineering student in Brazil who does WhatsApp bot freelance work and is writing a cyberpunk novel, created a repo with the same name. By Nov 6 it had 949 stars, 155 forks, and installers downloaded about 19.6k times. It is his only public repo on GitHub.

What it is

A free, open-source building modeling app modeled on Revit. The first line of the README reads "an open-source, clean-room take on the Autodesk Revit workflow, rebuilt in pure Rust". What it can draw is Revit's set: levels, walls, doors and windows, floors, rooms, columns, stairs, roofs. Plan, section, elevation and 3D views all come from the same model, it can lay out sheets, read and write IFC (the open format of the building industry), and read Revit's own .rvt files.

Two things make it instantly recognizable to Revit users: the interface copies the Ribbon, properties panel and project browser, and two-letter shortcuts like WA for walls and DR for doors work the same. Every action is also a command, so AI agents can model through MCP or the command line. There are installers for Windows, macOS and Linux, plus Flatpak, and you can open a sample house right after installing. The README embeds a 34-second demo video with AI-generated narration. The status says "early development".

The README states that its architecture, rules and MCP design follow CADCraft. CADCraft is ArtCraft's "open-source AutoCAD", released that same month.

How the stars climbed

Datestars (cumulative for the day)What happened those days
From ¥10-07—ArtCraft released a batch of "AI-written Rust clones of professional software" in one go, including CADCraft. In the same month, SolidCraft, built by outsiders from the same template, got 14k stars.
10-11—Someone in ArtCraft's issue asked for "BIMCraft" by name, and 14 people hearted it.
10-15Repo createdReleased v0.1 the same day.
10-19—The author of ConstructCAD, another open-source Rust BIM project, first came to this issue to nominate his own project.
10-21 to 10-2227YouTube channel Blender 3D Architect posted "Someone Just Cloned Revit for Free — Even the Interface \Autodesk in Full Panic" (11-06 57k views). 10-22 A passerby posted a BIMCraft link in that issue, saying "Came across it by chance, nothing to do with the team".
10-23104The same channel posted "BIMCraft Just Broke Revit's File Lock-In — Your RVT Files Are Free Now" (18k views). v0.8.0 added linked models and a Simplified Chinese interface.
10-26 to 10-28202 → 417 → 600A batch of AEC people posted on LinkedIn at once. Dinar Sharafutdinov's "REVIT IS NOT NEEDED! Ok, not yet" got 428 reactions. 10-27 shipped v0.9.0; +215 and +183 in a single day were the peaks.
10-29659The industry outlet Parametric Architecture published "Free 2026 Open-Source BIMCraft Challenges Revit's Grip".
11-06949Last 7 days +232, the 7 days before that +613. It's cooling.

Pulling YouTube videos from Oct 10 onward with BIMCraft in the title, the top 40 together have about 410k views (11-06). One channel, Open Source Architecture, posted more than 15 videos in two weeks, long-form, Shorts and livestreams, basically one per release. There are also a Portuguese creator Allan Brito, Arabic and Thai channels, and a series filmed by one contributor.

Developer circles barely moved: almost 30 days with no X posts about it turned up in search, and none on Hacker News either. This is the reverse of CADCraft. CADCraft's stars were pushed up by the parent brand on HN and X together. BIMCraft's stars came from architects and BIM practitioners, via the YouTube and LinkedIn they watch.

One number shows who is coming: installers were downloaded about 19.6k times, 20 times the star count, and the Windows msi was the most downloaded (one version alone got 0.9.0 downloads at v2,047). Developers who star a repo don't usually install a Windows modeling app; these people are trying to see whether it can replace Revit. The download count may include auto-updates and mirror crawls, which hasn't been broken out (inference: real people installing account for most of it).

Why this one and not the earlier ones

Several people are building for the same need at once:

ProjectRepo createdstar(11-06)How it differs from BIMCraft
Autodesk Revit2000Industry standardAbout $3,005/year, Windows only; BIMCraft copies its operations and is free
getcadcraft/bimcraft10-13188Same name, two days earlier, with a 120k-view video, but it's one of 8 app suite, leaning toward IFC viewing, not a one-to-one Revit modeling clone
ConstructCAD10-18174Also Rust + egui, GPL licensed; the author explicitly says "doesn't copy any vendor's look or wording", and it doesn't open .rvt
Bonsai(BlenderBIM)/ IfcOpenShellAround 2015IfcOpenShell 2,930Long-established open-source BIM running inside Blender, hard for Revit users to pick up
FreeCAD BIM workbench2012FreeCAD 35kA module inside general-purpose CAD, with an interface unlike Revit
Lapin, ifc-sheet, Hestia, BeamCraftOctober18–86Small projects that appeared in the same wave, an order of magnitude smaller in scale

The difference comes down to two things you can put in a video title. First, "looks exactly like Revit": the Blender 3D Architect video with 57k views had "Even the Interface" in its title. ConstructCAD deliberately avoids copying the look, which is safer legally, but creators have nothing to film. Second, "opens .rvt": .rvt is Revit's proprietary format, architects' old projects are locked inside it, and "RVT Files Are Free Now" hits harder than any feature list. "Pure Rust" and "agent-drivable" only came up in LinkedIn's AI discussion, and every Craft project in that wave has them, so they aren't selling points.

What keeps people is iteration speed. In 3 weeks it shipped 11 versions and 905 commits, adding linked models, schedules, phases, a family editor, structure, plumbing and electrical one by one, so creators had something new every week. It has more than 22 outside contributors, including someone who filed issues against Brazil's electrical standard NBR 5410 and fire codes, showing Brazilian engineers are actually using it. The code is most likely mostly AI-written (the repo has a CLAUDE.md, and media widely call it vibe-coded), though the author hasn't publicly stated the proportion.

Can you follow it?

Don't bother trying to build "open-source Revit" now: BIMCraft, ConstructCAD and getcadcraft already hold the space, and later entrants can't even get the name. But this case has one lesson more useful than CADCraft's: an unknown person with a single repo, no parent brand, still got close to a thousand stars and 20k downloads. He did it with three things that followers can get too:

  1. People publicly ask for it. ArtCraft's App Request issues are themselves a demand list, and each ticket says who the user is, how much they'd pay, and what they're complaining about. Whoever first produces something that installs and works takes the name and the attention.
  2. Pick an expensive, resented pro tool with fixed operating habits, and match its look one-to-one. "No relearning needed" is the best pitch and the easiest thing to film.
  3. Pitch it to industry creators, not developer circles. AEC YouTube channels need new topics, and they'll write "Autodesk Panics"-style headlines themselves.

The risks are in the same picture. Rust repos created after Sep 20 with "craft" in the name already number 382 on GitHub. ArtCraft shipped craft-anything in Oct 31, turning "clone any software" into a tool. BIMCraft's daily adds have already dropped from 200 to around 20. The window is still open, but it's narrowing.

If it were you

B. The path works: one person, no brand, can still make it, and this time the traffic came from industry creators, not the AI crowd. But BIM is already crowded, switching to another industry means you have to understand that trade yourself, and you have to sustain weekly releases. 949 stars is a good result, not a hit, and the heat is already fading.

Who it suits: people from architecture, structural, MEP, surveying, audio/video or electronics design, or people who know someone in those fields and can describe the habits and pet peeves of long-time users; developers who can use an AI agent to ship an installable version a week; people in language communities where "software is too expensive, everyone pirates it" holds true (Brazil, Eastern Europe, the Middle East, Southeast Asia).

Who it doesn't suit: people who don't understand the target industry and just want to apply an "XXCraft" template; people who only publish source code and don't ship installers (those users won't run cargo build themselves); and people who want to build open-source Revit or open-source AutoCAD.

How to do it: first look in ArtCraft's App Request and in the forums of various pro software for the one that's been named but has no builder: expensive industry software that is Windows-only with weak open alternatives (inference: structural calculation, landscape, interior rendering, plumbing, PCB, video color grading, the narrower the better). Copy the look and shortcuts of the old software; find a proprietary format it has and build a reader for it as the hook (BIMCraft's .rvt plays this role); ship installers for all three platforms from the first version; put a full finished-product image and a short demo video at the top of the README. Another route is to fill what BIMCraft hasn't done well: importing DWG underlays (architects are already asking in issues), country-specific code and family libraries, and tutorials.

How to get users: Start with the YouTube channels and LinkedIn practitioners in this industry, not HN. DM the few channels that already make "free alternative" videos, and give them a new feature to film with each release. Title non-English industry channels (Portuguese, Arabic, Thai) simply as "Free alternative to XX". Finally, drop the link under the issue where people asked for it.

Deadline: The window where "AI clones a big software in weeks" still counts as news is about the next one or two months, until roughly the end of 2026. After that, anyone can do these clones and they stop being news. Only the ones people actually use will remain.

How we'd be wrong: ① If over the next month, a personal clone project in another industry uses this same playbook and doesn't get even 300 stars, it means BIMCraft runs on resentment unique to Revit, and the grade should drop to C; ② if BIMCraft's daily star gains fall to single digits and contributors stop submitting, it means this wave was mostly curiosity driven by videos, with few real users; ③ conversely, if an architecture firm publicly says they delivered drawings with it, or its downloads keep rising with each release, it shows this kind of project can go from "collecting stars" to "actually used", and the grade should go up.

Why BIMCraft (IPedrax/BIMCraft) took off

Channel: GitHub. Research date 2026-11-06. Data from recalled data cards, the GitHub API (queried live), YouTube Data API, and Jina/Exa search. The agent-im server couldn't be reached over ssh this time, so no cross-repo SQL on the github database; competitor star counts were pulled live from the GitHub API.

One line

BIMCraft is an open-source Revit clone written with AI by Brazilian developer Pedro Medeiros (GitHub IPedrax): a pure Rust + egui desktop app, with the interface and shortcuts modeled on Revit, reading and writing IFC, reading .rvt, every operation a command, and drivable by agents through MCP/CLI. It took off because three things came together: the "*Craft" wave ArtCraft kicked off in October 2026 (AI-written Rust clean-room clones of professional software, with the community already asking for a BIMCraft by name in an issue); Revit's 3,005-dollar-a-year subscription, which the AEC crowd had long resented; and AEC creators on YouTube and LinkedIn who pushed it out in waves, almost all framed as "Revit killer / Autodesk panics".

Data

  • Created 2026-10-15; by 11-06 it had 949 stars (live API 962), 155–159 forks and 30 watchers; 905 commits in 22 days; 22+ contributors (IPedrax 506 commits, dansity 174, renanem 73, …). Sources: data card, GitHub API.
  • Star curve (data card, daily): 10-22 had only 27 stars; it rose to 104 by 10-23; 10-27 saw a single-day +215 (417); 10-28 +183 (600); afterward it settled to 20–60 a day. +232 in the last 7 days and +613 in the 7 days before that, so it's cooling.
  • Releases: v0.1 (10-15) to v0.10.0 (11-03), 11 versions in 3 weeks. Attached-file downloads total about 19.6k (v0.9.0 6,706, v0.8.0 5,904, v0.10.0 2,944; the Windows msi is downloaded the most, with v0.9.0 alone getting 2,047). Downloads are roughly 20:1 times the star count, which suggests architecture practitioners who actually want to install and use it, not just developers clicking stars.
  • Also on Flatpak (flatpark.org/apps/io.github.ipedrax.bimcraft).

1. Why it took off

Timing and platform event: ArtCraft's "*Craft" wave

  • In early October 2026, storytold (ArtCraft, 39k stars) kicked off a wave of "AI-written, clean-room Rust clones of professional software": storytold/cadcraft (AutoCAD-style, 10-07 created, 7,728 stars), tangency-labs/solidcraft (Fusion-style, 10-07,14,378 stars), storytold/craft-anything (10-31,16,638 stars), plus craft-launcher and other bundles. Since 9-20 there have been 382 new Rust repos with craft in the name on GitHub (GitHub search).
  • 10-11, someone opened issue #2157 on the ArtCraft repo: "[App Request] BIMCraft – open BIM for architecture (Revit / ArchiCAD alternative)", and a stream of architects followed up in the thread ("my brother is an architect, he's spent a fortune on Revit and AutoCAD", "a Revit-style BIMCraft would be amazing, especially with Mac support"). IPedrax 10-15 built the repo, and the name, tagline and architecture all match that request; the README itself says "its architecture, its rules and its MCP design follow CADCraft", and the logo borrows CADCraft's style. 10-22 Someone in the same issue then posted the IPedrax/BIMCraft link.
  • So BIMCraft didn't come from nowhere: the demand was named in the ArtCraft community, the name was ready-made, the code skeleton was copied from CADCraft, and it rode the attention of the whole Craft wave.

Where users come from: AEC creators on YouTube and LinkedIn (main channel, with evidence)

  • YouTube: 10-10 or more videos with BIMCraft in the title; the first 40 together have roughly 410k views (YouTube Data API, 11-06). Notably:
    • Blender 3D Architect "Someone Just Cloned Revit for Free — Even the Interface | Autodesk in Full Panic" (10-21) 57k; "BIMCraft Just Broke Revit's File Lock-In — Your RVT Files Are Free Now" (10-23) 18k; "BIMCraft Just Added Linked Projects" (10-26) 7.5 thousand.
    • BIM for Interior Design "BIMCraft First Look" (10-25) 23k. Note that the 10-20 video with 120k views, "BimCraft First Look", covers getcadcraft's product of the same name, not IPedrax's.
    • Open Source Architecture alone posted 10-21+ videos between 11-03 and 15 (long-form, Shorts and livestreams), 0.3–14k views each.
    • There are also Simulation Corner, IamDyna ("The Open-Source Revit in Pure Rust (50x Faster)", 6.7 thousand), Allan Brito (Portuguese, 8.5 thousand), Revit Mentor, Arabic and Thai channels, plus a series filmed by contributor Dmitry Dronov himself.
  • LinkedIn:10-20 FCB Lounge 发了第一条;10-26 到 10-28 集中爆了一批——Salman Pey「🚨 An open-source alternative to Revit just appeared」(26 条评论)、Dinar Sharafutdinov「REVIT IS NOT NEEDED! Ok, not yet」(428 个反应、46 条评论,10-28)、Pablo Zamorano、Petar Penchev、Deyan Nenov、Vegard Gavelsolberg(挪威语)、Joshua Stellini「the vibe coding community has gone and whipped up a Revit clone」。10-27/28 两天涨了 +215、+183 星,时间正好对上这批 LinkedIn 帖子,也对上 v0.9.0 发版(10-27)。
  • Media and blogs: Parametric Architecture wrote "Free 2026 Open-Source BIMCraft Challenges Revit's Grip" (10-29); CADSoftUSA published a review (10-24); someone on Japan's note.com wrote about it (10-31); aggregator sites like nathanputnam.com, hotrepo.ai and trendshift also picked it up.
  • X: in the local x-radar corpus, BIMCraft was mentioned 0 times in the last 30 days. The spread happened almost entirely within AEC circles (YouTube plus LinkedIn); the developer crowd (X/HN) never picked it up. I found no evidence on HN (unverified, since the database was unreachable).
  • The first inflection point: 10-23 jumped from 27 to 104 stars, timed right after the first wave of YouTube videos from 10-21 to 10-23 (Blender 3D Architect with 57k views, several from Open Source Architecture) and after v0.8.0. By v0.8.0 it had linked models and a Simplified Chinese UI, and videos started pushing .rvt reading as a selling point.

Why people stayed

  • First, it actually installs and works: Windows msi, macOS dmg, and Linux AppImage/deb/Flatpak are all available, and you can open the sample house right after installing. Downloads reached 20k, 20 times its star count.
  • One is the insane iteration speed, and every release can be turned into a new video: 3 versions a week, 900 times 11 commits, adding Revit features one by one (linked models, schedules, phases, family editor, structure, plumbing, electrical, lightning protection). Creators can "make one episode per release", which is what Open Source Architecture did, effectively free sustained exposure.
  • Third, the community actually shows up to work: more than 22 external contributors, plus issues filed against Brazilian codes (NBR 5410 electrical, IT 22/2025 fire safety), which suggests local Brazilian engineers are using it and submitting code.

2. Differentiation

ComparisonHow BIMCraft is different
Autodesk Revit (the big vendor, about $3,005/year)Free, MIT/Apache licensed, cross-platform (Revit is Windows-only); can read .rvt (import uses a clean-room reader ported from rvt-rs); built to be driven by agents (MCP/CLI). Feature parity with Revit is still far off, and the README itself says "early development."
Graphisoft Archicad, VectorworksCommercial software. BIMCraft is free, and it mirrors Revit's workflow, not Archicad's.
Bonsai (BlenderBIM) / IfcOpenShell (2,930 stars), FreeCAD BIM (FreeCAD 35k stars)These are established open-source BIM tools, but their interfaces are either Blender or FreeCAD, which take time to learn. BIMCraft copies Revit's Ribbon, green Modify tab, properties panel, Project Browser, and the WA/DR/WN shortcuts as they are, so Revit users' muscle memory works right away.
getcadcraft/bimcraft (BimCraft in the CadCraft suite, repo created 10-13, 188 stars)Nearly the same name, and the repo was created two days earlier. Its videos have 120k views, but on GitHub it has only about a fifth of BIMCraft's attention. It is one of 8 apps in a suite, built on Tauri, focused on IFC review rather than recreating Revit's modeling workflow. The names collided, and a creator even made a "GETCADCRAFT vs IPEDRAX" comparison video.
francisreboucas/constructcad (10-18,174 stars, GPL)Also an open-source BIM tool in Rust + egui, started 3 days later with a stricter license. It has neither the "one-to-one Revit" hook nor the "opens .rvt" hook.
Ciuntuc-BIM-Studio/lapin (10-23,86 stars), BIMvoice/ifc-sheet (28 stars), Hestia (28 stars), Apibim-com/BeamCraft (18 stars)Small projects that appeared in the same wave, using IFC as the native format or running in the browser, at an order of magnitude smaller scale.
Revit MCP bridges (such as the "open source MCP bridge that lets AI tools work inside Revit" posts on Reddit r/bim)Those still require buying Revit first. BIMCraft is itself a modeling tool that an agent can drive.

Is differentiation why it took off? Yes, but split it apart. What actually got AEC people to click was two things: "looks exactly like Revit and it's free" and "it can open .rvt" (nearly every video title is about this: Even the Interface, RVT Files Are Free Now, Identical to the Revit Wall Tool). The "driven by agents, pure Rust" layer only came up with developers and in LinkedIn's AI discussions, and was not the main selling point. Pure Rust and clean-room reimplementation are the same playbook as other projects in the Craft wave, so they are not differentiators in themselves.

3. Visibility and copycats

  • Visibility: it has spread within small circles, with moderate reach beyond. In AEC there are 40+ YouTube videos totaling about 410k views, several LinkedIn posts with hundreds of reactions, and industry media like Parametric Architecture covered it. But the developer crowd (X, HN) is essentially silent. There is no revenue, and it is free and open-source.
  • Copycats have already appeared: the same-named getcadcraft BimCraft (two days earlier, a name collision), ConstructCAD, Lapin, BeamCraft, meshcraft; milleleaf/CFDCraft (10-31) even copied BIMCraft's README tagline pattern: "X: …; an open-source, clean-room take on … ".

4. What others can borrow

  1. Go where requests are named and take commissions: ArtCraft's App Request issue is itself a demand list, and whoever ships first owns the name and the community's attention.
  2. Pick a professional tool whose users pay a lot, resent it, and have fixed habits (Revit at 3k dollars/year), clone the interface one-to-one, and make "switch without relearning" the selling point.
  3. Have a technical hook that can be filmed (it opens .rvt), which hands creators ready-made titles.
  4. Ship releases at high frequency, each with downloadable installers, screenshots and video (the README has a 34-second demo video with AI-generated narration), so creators can shoot one episode per release.
  5. Push through industry creators (AEC YouTube and LinkedIn) instead of competing in developer circles.

5. Still unclear

  • Whether the author or acquaintances approached creators to promote it: no evidence found. It looks organic, but whether there was a partnership behind Open Source Architecture's frequent posts is unverified.
  • No HN or Reddit data was retrieved (Reddit 403; our database was unreachable over SSH).
  • I did not break down how much of the download count came from auto-updates (zsync) or mirror sites.
  • Downloads do not mean people are actually producing drawings with it. Whether this momentum lasts depends on whether community contributions can keep up; the star count is already cooling.
  • The author has not disclosed how much code was written with AI (the repo includes a CLAUDE.md, and media widely describe it as vibe-coded).
