"FL Studio went open source": how a novice programmer's AI-cloned music production software got pushed to 800 stars
What it is A free, open-source music production app that looks and works like FL Studio, and can open the project files you made in FL.
Why it blew up It landed right in the October wave of AI cloning Photoshop and Office. Beat creators used "FL Studio went open source" as the headline, and the demo of opening old projects was the most convincing proof. After it went open source, others built versions with installers and made videos, which carried it further.
BHow you could follow it Stop making FL clones. Pick a paid piece of software that hasn't been cloned yet, has many users, and uses a proprietary format, then build an open-source alternative with "same interface, opens old files." Ship installers on day one and let the YouTubers in that software's community cover it.

2026 Oct 26,1.82M subscriber beat YouTuber Busy Works Beats posted a 9-minute video titled "FL Studio is now Open Source!" FL Studio is not open source. He was talking about a GitHub repo called Lemon Studio: its UI copies FL Studio, it can open FL's .flp projects, and its author calls himself a new programmer with most of the code written by Claude. When the video went up the repo had 194 stars; two days later it gained 123 in a single day. Below: what it is, why it took off, who is competing for the attention, and whether someone wanting stars from an open-source project can copy the approach.
A clickbait video and 479 comments
As of Nov 6 the video had 69,355 views and 479 comments (YouTube, 11-06). The most-liked comments are mostly angry: "Cloning FL is a sin. This company always had free updates" (342 likes), "DONT CLONE FL STUDIO. THEY'VE ALWAYS BEEN GOOD TO US" (322 likes). FL Studio's developer Image-Line has long offered free lifetime updates and has a strong reputation in the beat community, so many people felt attacking it was unfair.
The anger drove real traffic. Some people cheered: "Finally! A FLStudio Linux version!" (38 likes). One account replied in the voice of a team: "The goal is an exact replica. If you find something missing, open an issue and we'll fill it in. Please keep buying the real FL too."
GitHub star count (daily snapshots): 10-26 194 → 10-27 259 → 10-28 382 → 11-06 776, with GitHub's live reading that day at 791 stars and 113 forks. Over the last 7 days +316, over the 7 days before that +323. No acceleration, no drop-off.
What it is
In one line: a free, open-source DAW (digital audio workstation) that looks and works like FL Studio and can open the projects you made in FL.
- Written in Rust, GPL-3.0 licensed, runs on Windows, Mac and Linux, with Linux as a first-class platform. The repo description reads "a free and open-source digital audio workspace that you already know how to use".
- Piano roll, mixer, CLAP / VST3 plugin host, 20 bundled plugins, compatible with FL's skins and some sound patches.
- It can read and write .flp files. Parts it doesn't understand are kept as-is and written back.
- Still pre-alpha. No installer released, so you have to compile it from source yourself.
- First commit in Oct 8; 27 commits in 1,337 days; of the last 100 commits, 68 are co-authored with Claude Opus 5.5.
Why it took off
The topic is built-in conflict. In early October, a group of people used AI to make "clean-room clones" of Photoshop, Word, and Excel, and Engadget 11-01 wrote about it. Music creators were looking for a "music version" to cover, and FL Studio is the most-used software in the beat scene, so a headline like "FL Studio goes open source" gets clicks from both the fans and the haters.
The demo that sells it: open your old project. Compared with long-standing open-source DAWs like LMMS and Ardour, Lemon is deliberately made to look exactly like FL and can open .flp files. When the YouTuber drags his own old project in on camera and it plays back, that proves more than any feature list.
Finish quality from AI speed. One person got it to look "actually usable" in under a month, and the video could show a full beat being made (Busy Works Beats' 11-03 episode ran 24 minutes, 12,485 views).
Open source let others spread it. A musician named Michael Lane took it and made his own version with an installer, vocal-arrangement and mastering tools, shot as a video series, with a PayPal donation link. Busy Works Beats 11-01 later covered his version specifically (23,321 views), linking the original repo in the video. Others made a browser demo, and someone ported it to Android.
Where users come from
| Timeline | What happened | Volume |
|---|---|---|
| Around 10-09 | Listed in directories of "AI clone software" like remade.wiki, tagged "Replaces: FL Studio". | Early on, 10-16 had only 49 stars. |
| 10-25 | Tech YouTuber Joe Maddalone posted "The AI Cloning Will Continue Until Morale Improves", citing that directory. | 27,655 views. |
| 10-26 | Busy Works Beats' "FL Studio is now Open Source!", whose description names the source as the post above. | 69,355 views; 10-28 gained +123 stars in one day. |
| 10-27 | Spanish-language YouTuber GZ Producer: "FL Studio ahora es de código abierto!" | About 56k views. |
| From ¥10-30 | Image-Line's official forum opened a thread for discussion; Busy Works Beats posted 4 more episodes; Spanish YouTuber EEY TM made a "no coding skills, use Claude / ChatGPT to install it" tutorial. | Each episode drew a few thousand to over twenty thousand views. |
| 10-27~11-04 | Reposted by small sites and forums in French, Italian and German. | Small volume |
The related videos total about 270k views (YouTube, 10-12 to 11-04, including a few that covered competitors). Developer circles are barely talking about it: over 45 days, X has no posts I could find mentioning it, and Hacker News has none. The stars mostly came from musicians, and most of them can't get it running; EEY TM made an episode specifically on using AI to compile it, because the install barrier is exactly the problem. The stars likely reflect curiosity and endorsement more than real usage (inference).
Who it's competing with
| Project | Scale | How Lemon differs from the alternatives |
|---|---|---|
| FL Studio(Image-Line) | Mainstream commercial DAW, one-time purchase $99–$499 | The original, free lifetime updates, very loyal users |
| LYNX SHARE | 697 stars, +494 in the last 7 days | Almost the same positioning (FL workflow + importing .flp), launched 10-12, written in C++, has an installer; Busy Works Beats has shifted 11-01 and 11-03 episodes to promoting it, and its growth has already passed Lemon's |
| SoundCraft (ArtCraft suite) | 4,099 stars | A clone of Pro Tools, backed by the ArtCraft brand and media coverage |
| Pro-Wave | 187 stars | A clone of Logic Pro; the same creator's "Someone Open Sourced Logic Pro!" has 39,153 views |
| HoneyDew | 101 stars | A clone of FL Studio Mobile that runs in the browser |
| LMMS / Ardour / Zrythm | 10.6k / 5.4k / 3.2k stars | Long-standing open-source DAW; the UI doesn't look like FL, and it can't open .flp |
(Star counts are GitHub daily snapshots, 11-06)
In the "AI clones of professional music software" slot, within one month FL, FL Mobile, Logic and Pro Tools have each been cloned, and two projects are competing for the FL route. Comments ask "when will you clone Ableton" and "make Logic for Windows", which shows viewers are still waiting for the next one.
If it were you
Verdict: Don't build yet another FL Studio clone. There are already two, and LYNX has an installer and is taking the traffic. What's worth taking is the playbook: pick a paid professional app with a large user base and a proprietary file format, and build an open-source alternative that looks the same and opens your old files, then hand the first demo to YouTubers in that software's niche. The playbook still has room for other software, but the window is closing, and you'll get attacked for it.
Who it suits: developers who can write a lot of code with AI, can handle proprietary file formats, and are willing to ship desktop installers. You're better placed if you were a longtime user of the software you're copying, because you know where it's most worth imitating.
Who it doesn't suit: people who care about their reputation and fear being called a "copycat" or "AI slop". Most top comments on Lemon's video were insults. It's also a poor fit for anyone chasing approval from the developer community, since projects like this get no traction on X or HN.
How to do it:
- On choosing software: pick one that hasn't been cloned yet and that viewers are asking for by name. Comments have requested Ableton, and some people want a Windows version of Logic. Beyond music, expensive professional software with a proprietary format and no Linux version is a candidate. First search GitHub and the clone directory sites to confirm nobody has built it.
- Ship installers from day one (Windows and Linux AppImage). Lemon lost ground here: a commenter pointed out directly that "Lynx has an AppImage, Lemon doesn't."
- Make "opens your old files" solid. It's the only selling point you can explain on camera in one second.
- Target vendors with poor reputations who raised prices or moved to subscriptions, and the backlash will be much smaller. Image-Line's excellent reputation is a main reason Lemon took the heat (inference).
How to get users: first get into AI-clone directory sites like remade.wiki so tech YouTubers find you; then go straight to YouTubers in that software's community (don't skip Spanish-speaking markets beyond English; GZ Producer's single episode had 56k views). Open a Discord to keep people. Don't spend effort on X or HN.
Before the window closes: This wave of "AI clones big-company software" started in October, and audience novelty fades week by week. Anthropic has already restricted using Claude Code to clone games (10-30), and it's undecided whether that extends to software or whether vendors will send lawyer letters. If you're going to build, ship a first version within a month or two.
Signs you've misread it: if your clone got covered by a YouTuber and passed 10,000 views but stars stay in the low hundreds, viewers are just watching the spectacle and the niche is already tired. If vendors start filing takedown notices, or GitHub removes similar repos, this path is closed. Conversely, if over the next few weeks another software clone built the same way reaches a thousand stars, the window is still open.

Why Lemon Studio (ItsAlphaNeon/Lemon-Studio) took off
Data as of 2026-11-06. Stars and forks come from our GitHub repo tracker (repo_day) and the GitHub API; video numbers come from the YouTube Data API (pulled 2026-11-06).
One line
A free, open-source DAW written in Rust that copies FL Studio's UI and workflow and can open and save .flp projects (GPL-3.0). Its author, a self-described "novice programmer" from Utah, relies mainly on Claude Opus 5.5 to write the code: 27 days and 1337 commits, with 68 of the latest 100 commits signed Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5. It emerged in the 2026 October wave of "AI clean-room rewrites of big-company software," and FL Studio is its lane. Its users are mostly beat-making YouTubers, not developers.
Growth data
- Repo created 2026-10-10 (first commit 10-08: "lossless FLP reader/writer"). As of 11-06 it has 791 stars, 113 forks, and 27 watchers (GitHub API).
- Growth curve (repo_day): 10-16 49 → 10-22 137 → 10-26 194, slow at first; 10-27 +65 and 10-28 +123 (single-day peaks), then +20–80 per day. +316 in the last 7 days and +323 in the first 7 days: no acceleration, no drop-off.
- The inflection point lines up with Busy Works Beats (1.82M subscribers) posting "FL Studio is now Open Source!" 10-26: that video got 69,341 views and 479 comments.
- Never made GitHub Trending (repo is under 60 days old). No releases and no prebuilt binaries, so you have to compile from source yourself.

Growth tactics (evidence)
- Big beat-YouTuber videos (confirmed, main source)
- Busy Works Beats (1.82M subscribers): 10-26 "FL Studio is now Open Source!" 69k views; 10-30 "They Updated Open Source 'FL Studio'" 8.8k; 11-01 "He Just Made FL Studio, but better..." 23k (covers Michael Lane's version); 11-03 "FL Studio Clone just added Waves Plugins!" 7k, and "Making a Beat on the 'Open Source' FL STUDIO..." 12.5k. Clickbait framing like "FL Studio is open source now" lit up the whole product scene.
- Spanish-speaking regions: GZ Producer 10-27 "FL Studio ahora es de código abierto!" 55.8k; EEY TM 10-30 one video at 9.97k, then another 11-03 tutorial on using Claude/ChatGPT to install Lemon Studio without knowing how to code.
- Others: ProdbyTLibs 10-28 9k; Michael Lane's own series (19.9k / 9.5k / 6.7k / 6.3k / 4k); smaller channels such as BGelais, Bivrn, Empire Music Production.
- A dozen or so related videos findable from 2026-10-12 to 11-04 total about 270k views (including several featuring Lynx).
- AI cloning wave + software catalog sites (confirmed, early sources): ArtCraft (storytold) has shipped clean-room clones of Photoshop, Word, Excel and more since 10-07, and Engadget ran a story on it 11-01. remade.wiki (replicraft/remade, built since 10-09) listed Lemon Studio, with "Replaces: FL Studio" written on it, plus a browser demo by daijro (playground.daijro.dev/lemon-studio). Joe Maddalone's 10-25 video "The AI Cloning Will Continue Until Morale Improves" (27.6k views) cited remade.wiki, and Busy Works Beats marked this same thread as its "Original Video" in the description. The spread chain: cloning wave → catalog site → tech creator → music creator.
- Aggregators / small media (confirmed, small reach): clonesof.com, topdigitaltools.info (10-27, French), linuxeasy.org (11-02, Italian), mactechnews.de forum (11-04).
- FL user communities (confirmed): the Image-Line official forum has "Someone vibe coded (reverse engineered) Flstudio" (10-30,28 replies) and "FL Studio Clone has a better mixer than fl studio" (11-01). Reddit has threads in r/Learnmusicproduction, r/FL_Studio (someone ported it to Android), and r/ArtCraftAI (Reddit post bodies can't be fetched, only search snippets).
- Discord (confirmed): the README and videos both link a Discord, and the full roadmap lives there, which keeps people around.
- X / HN: x-radar shows no tweets mentioning Lemon Studio in the past 45 days; HN Algolia has no related posts. Developer circles basically aren't talking about it.
Why it took off
- The topic brings its own traffic: FL Studio is the beat scene's top DAW, and "a free open-source FL" is a headline that spreads on its own. In 2026 October, news of AI clones of Adobe and Office was hot, and music bloggers were looking for a "music version" to cover. Lemon was the closest FL match at the time (UI, skins, .flthemes, counterparts to the Fruity-series plugins).
- Opens .flp files: users can test it on their own old projects, and "open the song I made in FL" is the easiest thing to demo and share. clonesof and the videos both lead with this.
- Finished-looking for a solo dev in AI time: one person, 27 days, 1300 commits, and it already has a piano roll, a mixer, CLAP/VST3 host support, 20 bundled plugins, and Sytrus / FPC patch compatibility. The demo video looks like something that actually works, which is more convincing than older alternatives like LMMS.
- Open source lets others carry it: Michael Lane used AI to modify it into his own version, made an installer, shot a video series, and Busy Works Beats then covered his version, forming a second round of spread. daijro made the browser version and someone ported it to Android. Forkers got YouTube traffic and donations, and the main repo got stars.
- Few people actually convert: with no installer, most viewers can't get it running. Stars mostly reflect curiosity and cheering, not active use. EEY TM making a whole video on "use AI to help you compile it" shows where the barrier is.
Differentiation
Compared with FL Studio, it's free, cross-platform (Linux is first-class), and open source. Compared with LMMS, Ardour, or Zrythm, it deliberately copies FL exactly ("you already know how to use"), reads and writes .flp in both directions, and writes back data it doesn't understand unchanged. This "zero learning curve plus old projects carry over" combo is why bloggers could frame it as "FL Studio open-sourced," so the differentiation itself is what made it take off. But the differentiation is easy to copy: LYNX SHARE does nearly the same thing, showed up 10-12 later, ships an installer, and in the last 7 days its star growth has already passed Lemon's.
What to borrow
- Pick a paid piece of software with a large user base and a proprietary file format, and build a free alternative with the same interface that can open users' old files. A "X is open source now" hook is built in, so people will talk about it on their own.
- Don't count on developer circles. Go straight for the YouTube niches where that software's users gather (beat bloggers, Spanish-speaking creators). Directory sites (remade.wiki / clonesof) are the early step of getting the project in front of bloggers.
- The installer is the conversion bottleneck: Michael Lane's version and Lynx won traffic by being directly downloadable. To actually get users (or donations, or a paid version), you have to ship the binaries first.
- The monetization path depends on the forkers: PayPal donations and selling their own plugins or courses (Busy Works Beats sells a Lofi plugin pack in the description). The original author has no monetization so far.
Still unclear
- The engagement and posting times of the Reddit threads (blocked by 403).
- Whether there's risk of legal action from Image-Line (Anthropic 10-30 has already restricted Claude Code from cloning games; whether software clones get caught up in that is unverified).
- Discord member count, and how many people actually compiled it successfully and really use it.
- Whether the author's X account (@ItsAlphaNeon) has posted anything that drove traffic: not findable in our corpus, unverified.
