"Claude just killed PlayStation": how a PS2 porting skill pack got 300 stars in two weeks
What it is 11 Claude skills wrapped around PS2Recomp, an open-source recompiler. They walk you through turning PS2 games from your own discs into native PC programs, then modding them with a single English sentence.
Why it blew up The author, @opusjake, has about 138k Instagram followers. A wave of AI tool accounts copied the README into "comment for the resources" posts, and PS2 static recompilation happened to be hot in gamer circles.
CHow you could follow it Skip the PS2 topic. Copy the approach: build a role-split skill pack on top of an open-source base that already took off, write the README as a voiceover script, pick topics for your own followers, and distribute through short videos plus comment-keyword giveaways.
- Data (updated daily) · Repo created 2026-10-22 · 336 stars · 7 days +139
GitHub · stars Data 2026-10-24 → 2026-11-08 (16 days, 16 observations). Points before 10-28 come from deeply / archive backfill, not every day has one
GitHub's console-skill claims it can turn PS2 games from your own discs into native PC programs. In 15 days it picked up 297 stars. The stars didn't come from the developer. They came from a stream of Instagram AI tool accounts posting "comment a keyword to get the resources." The code hasn't changed since one commit. What's actually worth studying is the distribution. As a product by itself, this one is weak, and the topic just ran into Anthropic's new restriction.
A carousel with "comment RETRO"
In 2026 Oct 26, an Instagram AI tool account called thewizeai ("Artificial Intelligence l Business") posted a carousel. The first line read:
Comment "RETRO" and we'll send you the full Console skill setup: the install for Mac and Windows, the toolchain checklist, how to dump your own disc, all 11 skills explained and 5 prompts.
The second slide was the headline: "Claude just killed PlayStation." It went through 11 skills one by one, then honestly stated the limits: "Only works with discs you own, some games take weeks, Claude Code requires a paid plan." The post had a LinkDM auto-DM hooked up, and 307 comments came in, mostly people just typing "RETRO."
Three days later, on Oct 29, another account, stridejosh.ai, posted a Reel with nearly the same structure: "Comment PS2 and follow." Its caption line, "describe a change, a new camo, a faster car, a widescreen camera, and Claude builds it into the game," was lifted word for word from this repo's README. Over the same two weeks came karam.mahaan ("Comment CONSOLE"), agi_point ("Comment GAME"), Portuguese "Comenta PLAYSTATION," Facebook's "Comenta JOGO," and a French auto-dubbed YouTube Short, one after another.
All of these posts pointed to the same repo: Jakeschincariol/console-skill.
What it actually is
The first line of the README: "11 Claude skills that port PS2 games you own to PC: reverse-engineer the code, rebuild the renderer and backend, support any controller, play anywhere, then change whatever you want."
Looking closer, it doesn't do the recompilation itself. The part that translates PS2 MIPS machine code into C++ is ran-j's open-source PS2Recomp (3.8k stars). The method comes from hkmodd's ps2-recomp-Agent-SKILL (47 stars), and the README credits both. What console-skill does is break the weeks of grunt work between "it compiles" and "it plays" (reading crash logs, finding functions in Ghidra, filling in missing system calls) into 11 named-role skills: reverse engineer, backend engineer, artist, audio, controller mapping, save management, QA tester, and so on. It adds a STATE.md that remembers progress across conversations, so you can "stop on Monday and open a new chat on Thursday to pick up." The most flashy part is the mod skill: describe the change you want in one English sentence, and Claude writes it as a patch.
The README's requirements table lists them plainly: a PS2 disc you own, a PC with an optical drive, a self-built PS2Recomp (CMake 3.20, a C++20 compiler), Ghidra with the PS2 extension installed, plus a paid Claude Code subscription.
How the stars grew
GitHub daily stars (10-24 to 11-06):
| Date | Stars | Daily |
|---|---|---|
| 10-22 | Repo created | Only commit: "v1.0,559 offline tests" |
| 10-24 | 40 | |
| 10-26 | 105 | About +30 a day in the first few days |
| 10-28 | 149 | |
| 10-31 | 193 | Started to slow |
| 11-03 | 212 | Single digits per day |
| 11-04 | 272 | +60 in a single day, the peak day |
| 11-06 | 297 | +9;fork 39 |
It has never appeared on GitHub Trending. We found no discussion of it on X in nearly 30 days, and no media coverage. Each stretch of growth lines up with when the Instagram repost posts clustered. Where the +60 on 11-04 came from can't be confirmed: the Portuguese wave's timing is close (inferred); thewizeai's carousel was posted on 10-26, which doesn't match that day.
Comparing with projects in the same niche makes it clear. SandstoneDev's universal-ps2-recompiler is also a "Claude skill + PS2 recompilation" and launched two weeks earlier, with 44 stars. hkmodd's original has 47 stars. The products are about the same, but the star counts differ by roughly 6 times. The difference is whether someone was out on Instagram hyping it.
Who is behind it
The author is Jake Schincariol, known on Instagram as @opusjake, with about 138k followers (from search snippets, not verified by logging in). His LinkedIn headline reads "Distribution is your Moat, I help you build it with AI." His site, opusjake.ai, sells custom agent development starting at "$10–15k," with a free Skool community, and its homepage uses "5,000+ GitHub stars" as social proof.
console-skill is just one piece of his pipeline. From 9 to November, he posted roughly one "11 Claude skills for X" every 3–7 days: LinkedIn, Instagram, YouTube, cloning, startups, stock trading, and so on, all with the same phrasing. Sister repos as of 11-06:
| Repo | Stars | 7 daily new |
|---|---|---|
| replica-skill | 7,759 | +1,319 |
| day-trader-skill | 5,530 | +2,406 |
| instagram-agent-skill | 4,963 | +1,293 |
| youtube-agent-skill | 4,674 | +1,005 |
| console-skill | 297 | +114 |
The author's 19 repos total 32k stars. In that table, console-skill is the weakest. The reason is easy to guess (inferred): his followers want to use AI to boost productivity and make money, not retro gaming. The other skill packs are usable right out of the box, while this one needs an optical drive, Ghidra, and a C++ toolchain, and it takes weeks to get working. Most people who see the short video probably star it and leave. The repo has only 1 issues, and we found no one who has actually ported a playable game with it.
Why now, and why the window may already be closing
But five days after launch, the wind shifted. Time Extension 11-02 reported that around 10-27 Claude Code received a new server-side rule (flagged tengu_heron_brook), which reads:
Do build original games, games in a genre, and games from the user's own designs and assets. Don't build a recreation of a specific existing game, even if it is renamed or called original.
Users cannot turn this rule off. The same report says the reverse-engineering community decomp.dev shut its site over AI misuse, and Steam Next Fest was flooded with thousands of AI clone games. console-skill's core use case is having Claude reverse-engineer a specific commercial game, which sits right on that line. We haven't tested whether it would be outright refused. But building another project in this direction means betting it on one platform's rules.
Who it's competing with
| Project | Scale | How it differs |
|---|---|---|
| ran-j/PS2Recomp | 3.8k stars | The recompiler doing the real work, which console-skill wraps |
| hkmodd/ps2-recomp-Agent-SKILL | 47 stars | The original method; a large skill, hardcore, unpackaged, and no one promoting it |
| SandstoneDev/universal-ps2-recompiler | 44 stars | The same idea, two weeks earlier, with no one pushing it |
| snuri00/ps2-web-recomp | 1.4k stars | Another route (WebAssembly), a tool rather than a workflow |
| PCSX2 emulator | 16k stars | Works out of the box, no weeks of reverse engineering |
| Per-game dedicated recompilations | Dozens to 500 stars | One finished product per game, download and play |
| Claude Code itself | — | Can read Ghidra output without any skill installed, and it is starting to restrict this kind of use |
People who want old games have emulators. People who want a finished product have dedicated ports. Very few are willing to bring their own discs and spend weeks following an AI through reverse engineering. This layer already has three or four nearly identical workflows splitting it.
If it were you
Verdict: C. Don't chase this topic. What's worth learning is its packaging and distribution. It took off because of the author's existing 138k followers and a batch of repost accounts, which you don't have. The topic was also just constrained by platform rules, and similar projects nobody promoted have only about forty stars.
Good fit for: Developers who already run a short-video account with tens of thousands of followers (AI tools, productivity, any hobby niche) and want to build reputation through GitHub stars. What you should learn is this playbook, not PS2.
Not a fit for: Anyone with no distribution who expects the project to spread through developer circles on its own. hkmodd and SandstoneDev are ready examples: similar products, around forty stars. Also not for anyone who wants to keep pushing the "AI reverse-engineering/cloning of specific games" line.
How to do it:
- Pick an open-source base that has already taken off and build only the agent workflow layer on top of it. console-skill shipped in a single commit, and the heavy lifting is all done by PS2Recomp.
- Split skills by role, and make sure each one can be explained in a single sentence. "11 roles: one for reverse engineering, one for controllers" is much easier to explain than "one big skill."
- Write the README as a voiceover script. Include a "wow" moment (here, "mod with one English sentence") that people can copy into a short video.
- Put the requirements in plain sight, and state the legal position clearly (here, "only your own discs, no ISOs or BIOS").
- Choose the topic based on your own followers. The author's productivity and money-making skills get 5–8k stars, while this retro gaming one gets 297. The difference is whether the audience matches.
How to get users: Follow its path: short videos or carousels with "comment a keyword to get the resources," with auto-DMs sending the link. Team up with a few accounts in the same niche, then run another round in different languages (it already has Portuguese and French versions). The resource pack should include install steps, a toolchain list, and a few ready-made prompts.
When to move: The "Claude skill pack" wave is still going, the author ships a new pack each week, and repost accounts are still hunting for material. Best to act before the end of 2026, since the more time passes, the more similar packs there will be.
Signs that would mean you read it wrong:
- If console-skill or a similar PS2 skill pack gains over 1,000 stars in the next month, it shows the retro gaming audience is bigger than estimated;
- If someone publicly ports a playable game with it and it spreads, it shows the barrier is lower than expected;
- If Anthropic removes or loosens tengu_heron_brook, this path reopens;
- The reverse: if the author's new packs also start dropping to a few hundred stars, it means the "11 skills + comment for resources" playbook itself is weakening, and the value of learning it shrinks too.

Jakeschincariol/console-skill: why it took off
Research date 2026-11-06. Data from our github database (repo_profile / repo_day), the GitHub API, Jina search and page text, and TikHub.
Bottom line
This isn't a product that caught on by itself. It's author Jake Schincariol's (Instagram @opusjake, about 138K followers) content pipeline, "11 Claude skills + get the resource by commenting on Instagram", shipping another one, riding the wave of the 2026 9–October PS2 static recompilation (PS2Recomp) hype. At 297 stars it's weak even within the author's own lineup (sister repos on the same playbook: replica-skill at 7.8K, day-trader-skill at 5.7K, instagram-agent-skill at 5.0K). The repo is really a wrapper around other people's work: the recompiler is PS2Recomp (ran-j, 3.8K stars), and the method comes from hkmodd/ps2-recomp-Agent-SKILL (47 stars).
1. Data
- Created 2026-10-22, with a single commit ("v1.0,559 offline tests", co-authored by Claude Opus 5.5). Nothing has been pushed since (GitHub API).
- Stars (github repo_day / data card): 10-24 40 → 10-28 149 → 11-03 212 → 11-04 272 (+60 in a single day) → 11-06 297. The first 5 days grew fastest (+25–33 a day), then it slowed, spiked again around 11-04, and settled to +9–16 a day. At research time (GitHub API) it had 312 stars, 40 forks and 7 watchers.
- It has never made trending (trending_days_any=0). The repo is too new, under the roughly 60-day threshold.
- The author's other repos (github, daily star gains, 7): day-trader-skill 5,530 (+2,406), replica-skill 7,759 (+1,319), instagram-agent-skill 4,963 (+1,293), youtube-agent-skill 4,674 (+1,005). console-skill's 7-day +114 is a fraction of these.
2. Who the author is and where the money comes back
- GitHub bio "Always vibes, never slop", 3,442 followers, account created 2025-01. LinkedIn headline: "Distribution is your Moat, I help you build it with AI".
- opusjake.ai: custom agent builds from "$10–15k", a free Skool community, Opus Lab (100+ members), and a newsletter. The homepage leads with "5,000+ GitHub stars" as credibility. Instagram @opusjake has about 138k followers and 136 posts (search snippet, not verified while logged out).
- In short, these free MIT skill packs are lead magnets: grow IG → comment keyword → DM the link, capture emails or Skool signups → sell consulting and custom builds. GitHub stars are the social proof. console-skill itself charges nothing.
- Product-line cadence: from September to November, roughly every 3–7 days a new "11 Claude skills to do X" (LinkedIn, Instagram, YouTube, X: replica, founder, trader, day-trader, hunter, console, closer, seed, whale…), all with the same phrasing.
3. Where users come from (growth tactics)
- Instagram "comment keyword for resources" matrix (confirmed). Several AI-tool accounts posted nearly identical Reels, with captions almost copied from the README ("One reverse engineers the game… the craziest one is the Mod skill"):
- agi_point (Timur Gorin): "Comment GAME and I'll send you the full setup", about 2 weeks ago (late October), www.instagram.com/reel/De0XmPgEbRM/
- stridejosh.ai: "Comment PS2 and follow", 10-29, www.instagram.com/reel/DfGDHZsiTL3/
- karam.mahaan: "Comment CONSOLE", about 10-30, www.instagram.com/reel/DfA0-eBgZvA/
- thewizeai: "Comment \"RETRO\"", an image carousel with a LinkDM auto-DM, 307 comments, www.instagram.com/p/De-Hk5kj7tg/
- Portuguese versions: "Comenta PLAYSTATION" (https://www.instagram.com/reel/DfYPQNhCAVL/) and a Facebook "Comenta JOGO" (guilherme.emanuel).
- YouTube Shorts: a French auto-dubbed Short from @iAlan_automatise, and "Claude Code Ports PS2 Games to PC Check THIS First" (labeled AI-generated). Whether these accounts are partners, paid promotion, or organic reposters can't be determined. But the copy is highly consistent, and they clustered within two weeks of 10-22. The +60 jump in 11-04 and the Portuguese wave roughly line up with thewizeai's carousel (unverified).
- The author's own @opusjake: he has promoted earlier packs through IG (search results include paraphrases like replica "hit 119 GitHub stars on launch"). I couldn't retrieve the original post for this one (IG requires login).
- Reddit: r/ClaudeAI has a post, "Claude's game porting skills are insane" (1xko2cs). Reddit blocked scraping, so I can't see the body or traction. r/PSP's "Good News" mentions using this kind of skill to port PS2 games to PSP (unclear whether it refers to console-skill).
- Aggregator: skillsdirectory.com lists 93 of the author's skills, but only 16 installs and 229 views site-wide, so aggregators bring little traffic.
- X: our x-radar corpus has only 0 posts from the last 30 days matching "console-skill / Jakeschincariol". Nothing on HN. The spread is mainly on Instagram, not in developer circles.
- TikTok: searching "claude ps2" turned up no videos for this pack. What came up were others using Claude to modify PS2 games (e.g. adding characters to DBZ Budokai, 100k views). That shows "Claude + old games" is itself a hot topic.
4. Timing
- PS2/console static recompilation is breaking out. Repos created in October on github: snuri00/ps2-web-recomp 1,395 stars (10-08), gothamor/gta-vcs-recomp 500 (10-30), god-of-war-recomp 227, KillzoneRecomp 189, DQ8-Recompiled 117. Bigger ones include totk-pc-recomp 7 (+4,824 in a day) and SavageWindRecomp 3.2k. Many of these are AI-assisted ports. "Turn your own PS2 game into a native PC game" is a hot idea in the player community.
- 平台事件(反方向):Time Extension 11-02 报道,Anthropic 大约 10-27 在服务端下发了 tengu_heron_brook 规则,让 Claude Code「Don't build a recreation of a specific existing game」,还提到 decomp.dev 因为 AI 滥用关站、Steam Next Fest 被 AI 克隆作品刷屏(https://www.timeextension.com/news/2026/11/anthropic-restricts-ai-bot-claudes-ability-to-clone-or-decompile-specific-existing-games)。这是 console-skill 要面对的直接风险:它的核心卖点,让 Claude 逆向一个具体的商业游戏,正好压在这条线上。话题热度可能顺带给了点关注,但更可能让「真跑起来」的比例变低。
5. Competitors
| Name | Where | Launched | Scale | Difference |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| ran-j/PS2Recomp | Open source | 2025-04 | 3.8k stars / 250 forks | The actual recompiler doing the work; console-skill is just a Claude workflow wrapped around it |
| hkmodd/ps2-recomp-Agent-SKILL | Open-source Claude skill | 2026-03 | 47 stars | The original method; console-skill is a modified version of it (the README says so). A single large, hardcore skill, not packaged as 11 separate personas |
| hkmodd/PCSX2-MCP | Open source MCP servers | 2026-03 | 43 stars | Has Claude drive the PCSX2 debugger; console-skill lists it as an optional dependency |
| SandstoneDev/universal-ps2-recompiler | Open-source Claude kit | 2026-10-06 | 44 stars | A toolkit with the same "Claude skills + PS2RC" idea, 2 weeks earlier, never distributed |
| snuri00/ps2-web-recomp / exoteric33/ps2-native-recomp | Open source | 2026-10 | 1.4k / 130 stars | A different recompilation route (WebAssembly/native), a tool rather than an agent workflow |
| PCSX2 | Open-source emulator | 2013 | 16k stars | An emulator, playable out of the box; console-skill makes you spend weeks reverse-engineering |
| Per-game recomp projects (GoW, Killzone, GTA VCS…) | Open source | 2026-09~10 | Dozens to hundreds of stars | Finished ports, one game each; console-skill is a general process for "do any game yourself" |
| Claude Code itself | Big-company features | — | — | Without installing a skill, you can already have Claude read Ghidra output directly, and Anthropic has started restricting this kind of use |
6. Differentiation
- On the product side: it breaks a hardcore engineering pipeline (Ghidra mapping, stubbing syscalls, triaging crash logs) into 11 persona-based skills (reverse engineer, backend, art, audio, controller, saves, mods…), adds a cross-session STATE.md, and ships a set of pure standard-library Python tools (ISO/ELF/TIM2/VAG/memcard parsers). The most attention-grabbing part is "describe a change in one English sentence and Claude writes it as a mod." The legal stance is spelled out too (bring your own disc, no ISOs or BIOS in the repo).
- The real difference is packaging and distribution. Both the original "Claude + PS2Recomp" and SandstoneDev's kit got only 40 or so stars. console-skill put the same idea into a uniform template of 11 skills, with a feature table that works for short videos, and ran an Instagram comment-for-resources funnel. That brought it roughly 6 times the stars.
- So differentiation is why it took off, but that differentiation is the author's distribution ability, not a technical moat. Within the author's own product line this one is clearly weaker: its audience (retro gamers) overlaps little with the author's Instagram followers (people who want AI for productivity and making money). The bar is also high: you need a physical disc, Ghidra, a C++ toolchain, and weeks of reverse engineering. Short videos bring in people who mostly just star the repo.
7. How many people can see it
- Revenue: not disclosed, and nothing is sold. The author monetizes through consulting and a community.
- Media and big accounts: no press coverage. It is discussed on X by 0. It was only reposted within Instagram's AI tools circle. Call it "talked about in small circles."
- Copycats: mainly Instagram, Facebook and YouTube accounts reposting the copy (in English, Portuguese and French). I haven't seen direct forks with renames at the code level, though similar tools already existed (hkmodd, SandstoneDev).
8. What others can learn
- A free MIT skill pack + a uniform "11 skills for X" naming scheme + a new pack every week is a repeatable follower machine: GitHub stars as social proof, IG comment keywords to trigger DMs and email capture, then sell $10–15k custom dev work and a community.
- It picks topics with a "wow" moment in short videos ("Claude turns your PS2 game into a PC game") and writes the README like a voiceover script, so other accounts can copy it easily.
- It builds the agent workflow layer on top of an already-popular open-source base (PS2Recomp), so development cost is very low (one commit to go live).
- Counterexample: the further a topic is from the creator's own audience and the higher the entry barrier, the worse the stars (297 vs 5–8k).
9. Still unclear
- Unclear whether the Instagram repost accounts are paid partnerships, the author's own network, or spontaneous copycats.
- Not sure where the +60 on 11-04 came from (possibly the Portuguese Reel wave, thewizeai's carousel, or topic traffic from the Time Extension article).
- I found no evidence anyone has actually used it to port a game to a playable state. The repo has only 1 issues and hasn't been updated since one commit.
- Not tested whether Anthropic's tengu_heron_brook rule would get these skills rejected outright.
- Couldn't see the heat of that r/ClaudeAI thread (Reddit blocks scraping).
