One post brought in 2,600 stars: how rea-video turned "REA's video edition" into a hit
What it is An open-source video teardown tool for Claude Code / Codex. Drop in a video and it tells you, shot by shot, whether each one was filmed, AI-generated or coded, then gives you three replication plans: shoot it, generate it, or write the code.
Why it took off REA had just gone viral in the Chinese-speaking world, and "you can reverse-engineer videos too" explains it in one line. The README's opening screen shows a comparison GIF plus a case study and accuracy table, which AI repost accounts can use as-is. A single Shlcy post with 130k views set it off.
BHow you could follow it Don't build another video reverse-engineering tool. Copy its star-earning formula: when the next general-purpose hit project takes off, within two or three weeks build a version of it for a specific scenario, put the original project's name in the title, write the README as a repost-ready piece, and send it to Chinese AI-tool repost accounts.

An author with 169 GitHub followers borrowed the name of 430k-star REA, wrote a README built to be forwarded as-is, then let Chinese AI-news accounts on X spread it for them. In 8 days the stars went from 0 to about 2,700. This breaks down what it is, what the post said, which slot it took, what you can copy to earn stars, and why a "video reverse-engineering" project is already too late.
33 views and 130k views
In 2026 Nov 3, author JuneYaooo posted on X: "Inspired by REA, open-sourced a skill that reverse-analyzes videos." The tweet ended with only 33 views. The same day the author opened a "open-source self-recommendation" issue on Ruan Yifeng's Tech Enthusiast's Weekly repo, which still hadn't been included by 11-06. The repo had 24 stars that day.
At noon Beijing time the next day, 12:34, an AI news account called Shlcy (@CY160909) posted:
REA-Video, an open-source project for reverse-engineering videos. Install it, hand a video to your agent, and it automatically splits out every shot and analyzes whether each frame is live footage, AI-generated, or code-driven motion graphics. ...It's like giving it a finished video and having it reverse-derive a detailed production tutorial. Free and open source, with local video analysis supported.
The post got 3,309 likes, 465 reposts, and about 130k views. A reply in English said: "Saw this and went and tried it, my video really does look more like the reference video now." The repo gained 802 stars that day, and the next day it showed about 2.7k stars and 368 forks on the GitHub page, +1,102,11-06.

|---|---|---|
| 10-29 | Repo created | |
| 11-03 | 24 | 11 |
| 11-04 | 105 | 25 |
| 11-05 | 788 | 117 |
| 11-06 | 1,971 | 279 |
| 11-06 afternoon | About 2,700 | 368 |
(Daily numbers are morning snapshots; the last line comes from the GitHub page.)
The fork-to-star ratio is about 14%, which is usually much lower for tool repos, suggesting plenty of people actually pulled the code and ran it. The author was busy too: of the 55 commits, 11-04 were 16 and 11-05 were 22.
What it actually does
A skill for agents like Claude Code and Codex, plus a Python command-line tool. You tell the agent in one sentence:
``text Install https://github.com/JuneYaooo/rea-video, then break down this video: /path/to/video.mp4 ``
The agent installs it and runs it to completion. What comes out is:
- A one-line verdict, like "41% AI video + 59% code interface, 8 seconds of real screen recording, library music at 122 BPM";
- A shot-by-shot call on whether each shot is live footage, AI-generated, digital human, 3D, or code-driven motion graphics, based on frame rhythm, sensor noise, whether the whole frame looks like a flat plane panning, and AIGC tags in the metadata;
- Start and end times of on-screen text (exportable as SRT / ASS), edit points, whether vocals are real or AI, the music's BPM, and where sound effects land;
- A replication plan in three piles: what to shoot, what to generate with models, and what to write as Remotion code.
It runs offline without a vision model; plugging in Gemini or Doubao makes it more accurate and also reverse-prompts a prompt for each shot. The accuracy table in the README is the author's own test: 99.6% on a held-out set; 88.6% when using only the tool on videos downloaded from platforms and transcoded, rising back to 99.6% with a vision model plugged in. Total sample is 41 videos, with no third-party verification.
Why now
Three things converged.
REA had just educated the market. morluto/rea (Reverse Engineer Anything) blew up in Chinese circles in October: reverse-engineering software, reverse-engineering binaries, now 436k stars, with a pile of "what is REA anyway" videos on Zhihu, Bilibili, and YouTube. "REA can reverse-engineer software, now video can be reverse-engineered too" needs no explanation, and nearly every repost opens this way. The repo is literally named rea-video, and the last line of the README reads "Inspired by REA."
Short-video creators really have this problem. In the second half of 2026, live footage, AI generation, digital humans, and code-driven motion graphics often got mixed together in a hit. Seeing a video you want to copy, the first question is "was this shot or generated?" An early recommendation post with 24k views (@ganfanren_ai) said it plainly: "Get the call wrong and you spend the money in the wrong place." Nearly every repost mentions this point, and it's what sets it apart from other breakdown tools and what gets retold most.
The README reads like a ready-made forward. The first screen is a before-and-after GIF: on the left, a phone-shot TikTok ad; on the right, a replica with the product swapped in by AI, with the line "Left is all live footage, one scene from two angles; right is all AI, 8 shots and 3 generations is enough." Below that come 6 case studies (mixed footage, 3D explainer, product promo, AI music MV, unboxing, AI plus real-person sales), the accuracy table, versions in 9 languages, and an FAQ that draws a line with Hypit. Reposters can publish it after changing a few words.
Where the stars came from
| Channel | What happened | Weight |
|---|---|---|
| The author himself | X tweet 33 views; Ruan Yifeng weekly self-recommendation issue, not included | Almost zero |
| AI repost accounts on Chinese X | 11-03 @ganfanren_ai 24k views; 11-04 Shlcy 130k views; 11-05 a Weekly Resources account and four or five others, a few hundred likes each | The main driver; timing matches the star growth |
| GitHub daily-digest accounts | 11-06 @GitHub_Daily, @GitTrend 0x follow-ups | Secondary amplification |
| English AI news aggregator sites | 11-04 to 11-06 dozen-odd sites auto-writing articles | Small reach, most likely written after seeing stars rise |
| Hacker News | Posted by others, 4 points | Not a source |
No paid promotion found; whether those repost accounts were paid to post can't be seen from outside.
The author isn't new: across 10 repos he has about 7,200 stars in total, and earlier nihaisha-nishi-tcm (about 2,200 stars) and gpt-image2-ppt-skills (about 1,400 stars) followed the same pattern: a popular model or project's name + a specific scenario + an agent skill. The name is familiar in Chinese AI tooling circles, but the author's own social accounts have almost no reach; distribution depends entirely on others sharing it.
Who it's competing with
| Project | Scale | How it differs from rea-video |
|---|---|---|
HeyGen HyperFrames' /reverse-any-video | Main repo about 80k stars | 10-30 first commit, nearly simultaneous with rea-video; converts a video back into an editable HTML project, and takes only the code route |
| hypit-ai/hypit | About 28k stars | One-click video output, doesn't tell you how the original was made; rea-video's FAQ explicitly says the two complement each other |
| viral-video-analyzer | 162 stars | Douyin breakdown tools that extract scripts, without distinguishing live footage from AI |
| "Video-to-prompt" websites | Not verified | Assumes the whole video is AI-generated and only reverse-derives prompts |
| Domestic breakdown SaaS like Qianguan, Chanmama, and Jiling AI | Commercial products | Paid, closed source, breaks down ads for ad buying, doesn't run inside an agent |
| Just having Gemini / Doubao watch the video | Huge | Can describe, but no shot-by-shot evidence or replication split; rea-video treats them as optional "eyes" |
"Viral breakdown" is already a crowded SaaS business in China, and HeyGen was doing a "video version of REA" almost the same week. rea-video only holds one slot: open source, runs inside an agent, shot-by-shot judgment of shot/generated/code.
Is it a one-off wave?
Likely (inference). The author's earlier 2,200-star repo now gains only a dozen-odd stars a week; this repo is 8 days old with only 1 open issues, and there's no evidence yet of anyone using it long-term. A derivative repo that wraps it as a Hermes plugin (0 stars) has already appeared, and some repost accounts say "I have a better video reverse-engineering approach." Whether the heat lasts depends on whether the author keeps publishing case studies and gets picked up again by big accounts.
If it were you
B. The play is clear and copyable, but the "video reverse-engineering" slot is already taken and REA's heat is fading; what's worth learning is how it earned its stars, not building another one.
Who it suits: developers already building agent skills or Claude Code plugins who have one concrete scenario in hand; people who can write Chinese READMEs and know who the dozens of repost accounts in Chinese AI tooling circles are.
Who it doesn't suit: anyone wanting to build another "reverse-engineer video" tool (rea-video and HeyGen have taken those spots one after the other, so you can only compete on details); people who can code but can't write a one-line pitch that can be retold; anyone counting on the author's own account to bring traffic (his posts have gotten only 33 views, and yours probably will too).
How to do it: follow its formula with a different subject. When a general hit (the next REA, the next popular model) takes off, within two to three weeks build a version of it for one specific scenario, with the original project's name in the title. Pick scenarios where people see a finished product and want to know how it was made: reverse-engineering how a poster or a PPT page was designed, the structure and copy of a landing page, the editing and music of a podcast episode, the cover and title of a viral Xiaohongshu note. The core pitch has to fit in one sentence, and that sentence should decide where the user's money goes (rea-video's is "is this shot filmed, AI, or code?").
How to get users: the README is your forward script: a before-and-after GIF plus a one-line verdict on the first screen; 5+ real case studies, each with a report; an accuracy table, even if self-tested; at least four languages including Chinese, English, Japanese, and Korean; an FAQ that names a popular competitor and clarifies the split. For installation, give only one line, "Install <repo>, then …", and let the agent act as the installer. After launch, DM the repo link and a copy-ready blurb to the Chinese X accounts that recommend AI tools and the GitHub daily-digest accounts; English aggregator sites will pick it up on their own once the stars rise.
Deadline: while the borrowed project's heat is still there. Take REA: it blew up in October, and by early November people were already writing that "the heat is fading"; the next project that borrows a name should ship within two to three weeks of the original's breakout.
Signs you misjudged: ① rea-video passes 10k stars by late November and keeps getting issues and PRs, showing real demand and a long-term project rather than a one-off wave, and then there's more room to follow up by fixing what it hasn't done well (English distribution, accuracy after platform transcoding); ② Chinese AI repost accounts collectively stop reposting "X's version of Y" projects, or publicly say they take paid promotion, which cuts off the free distribution path; ③ HeyGen pushes /reverse-any-video hard as a standalone feature and adds shot-by-shot judgment of origin, in which case even rea-video itself couldn't hold that slot.
Data and sources: star and fork counts come from GitHub daily snapshots (11-03 to 11-06) and the GitHub page of 11-06; the Shlcy post and replies come from X (11-04); the author's self-recommendation comes from ruanyf/weekly issue #13053 (11-03); product features, cases, and accuracy come from rea-video's README (the author's own testing); competitor star counts come from GitHub, 11-06. Wherever it says "inference" or "unverified," that is what it means.

rea-video (JuneYaooo/rea-video): why it took off
Research date 2026-11-06. Channel: GitHub. Data from our github / hackernews / x databases, the GitHub API, Trendshift, live X search, and Jina/Exa web search.
One line
An Agent Skill + Python CLI for Claude Code / Codex: drop in a video and it judges, shot by shot, whether each shot is live-action, AI-generated, or code-driven motion graphics, then extracts on-screen text, cut points, voiceover, BPM, and sound effects, and finally gives a recreation plan split into three groups: what to shoot, what to generate, and what to write as Remotion code.
Verdict: this is a video version of REA (Reverse Engineer Anything, 436k stars) by morluto/rea, riding on REA's name. Timing-wise, REA's hype has already faded. The cold start came from a batch of Chinese AI-tool repost accounts on X: a Shlcy post 11-04 got 130k views and pushed stars from about 100 to 2,600 in a single post. The author ran no paid acquisition, and their own posts only got 33 views. As a product it does have an angle nobody else has taken: a per-shot breakdown of "how was this shot made," a call that directly decides whether money should go to filming, models, or code. The README also includes a reproducible accuracy table and versions in 9 languages, so repost accounts can pick it up and run with it.

Trendshift's daily star gains are: 11-03 +51,11-04 +802,11-05 +1,102,11-06 that day, +565 as of the time of crawling. It wasn't on Trendshift before 25, and our database has no trending record for it (the repo was only 8 days old, too new for GitHub trending to pick up). The fork-to-star ratio is about 14%, usually lower for similar tool repos, which suggests quite a few people actually pulled the code and tried it. Commits: of the 55 commits, 11-04 have 16, and 11-05 have 22. The author iterated intensely over the two days of the burst (GitHub API).
Competitors
| Name | Where | Launched | Scale | How it differs from rea-video |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| morluto/rea(REA) | Open source | 2026-04-14 created, blew up in October | 436,615 stars / 108k forks; HN 101 points (10-12); 404 Media and Scientific American both covered it | Reverse-engineers software and binaries, doesn't touch video. rea-video borrowed its name and the "reverse engineer anything" narrative |
HeyGen HyperFrames /reverse-any-video | Open source (a skill within a big-company project) | 2026-10-30 first commit, 11-05 official promotion | hyperframes main repo 79,902 stars; Miguel07Code's promo post 3.3k views | Turns videos back into editable HTML / HyperFrames projects, and only takes the code-rebuild path; rea-video first judges each shot's source, then gives a plan across three paths: shoot / generate / code. The two were built almost simultaneously, so they're parallel competitors, not copies. |
| hypit-ai/hypit | Open source | 2026-07-29 | 28,263 stars | One-click recreation of hit videos with direct output, and no explanation of how the original was made. rea-video specifically spells out the difference in its README FAQ; the two are complementary. |
| pelpeljakob-creator/viral-video-analyzer | Open source | 2026-03-30 | 162 stars | Douyin video breakdown: transcripts, hit-video formulas, prompts. Doesn't distinguish live-action from AI, and doesn't run accuracy benchmarks |
| "Video-to-prompt" sites (videotoprompt.org/.com, tool.video, promptessor, aimix) | Web | 2025–2026 | Not verified | Only reverse-engineers an entire video into a prompt, assuming it's AI-generated; doesn't break down source shot by shot, and doesn't break down audio or on-screen text |
| Domestic breakdown tools: Qiangua video AI analysis, Chanmama creative tools, Jiling AI, Chuangyi AI, NemoVideo, Coze Douyin-to-storyboard workflow | Web / SaaS | 2025–2026 | Commercial SaaS, scale unverified | Script and storyboard breakdown for paid ads and product sales; paid, closed-source, doesn't run inside agents, and doesn't judge AIGC source |
| Feeding videos directly to Gemini / Doubao | Big-company features | Already there | Huge | Can describe videos, but lacks structured workflows like shot segmentation, noise and frame-rate forensics, SRT export, and recreation task splitting. rea-video itself treats Gemini / Doubao as optional "eyes". |
Competitive read: the "hit-video breakdown and recreation" niche in China has been crowded with SaaS for a long time; the "REA for video" framing was used by HeyGen almost on the same day. The only slot rea-video holds is the one cell of "open-source, built for agents, judging shot by shot: live-action / AI / code."
Growth tactics (evidence)
- Riding REA's name and buzz (confirmed). Repo name
rea-video; the author's original tweet was "Inspired by REA, I open-sourced a skill for reverse-analyzing videos" (@yao_june12106,33, 11-03 views). On HN the title was written outright as "REA (Reverse Engineer Anything) for Videos" (4 points, posted by handfuloflight, not the author). Repost openers almost all went "REA just blew up not long ago... inspired by it" (@369Serena), or "Everyone knows REA can reverse-engineer software, now video can be reverse-engineered too" (@leaf_sanren, 10-31,133 likes). REA's heat in the Chinese-speaking world was also covered on Zhihu, Bilibili, Juejin, and QQ News. - Chinese X AI-tool repost accounts (confirmed, the main catalyst). Live X search sorted by time:
- 11-03 @ganfanren_ai: 526 likes, 24k views
- 11-04 12:34 UTC @CY160909 (Shlcy): 3,309 likes, 465 reposts, 130k views. The timing matches +11-04 802 stars, making it the main catalyst
- 11-05 @grgerwcwetwet (Zhoulan Resources) 468 likes / 25k views; @Delroy 715 113 likes; @awe0_io 197 likes; @369Serena; @mingzi206
- 11-06 GitHub daily-digest accounts like @GitHub_Daily and @GitTrend0x followed up
- English-side volume was small: @ArchiveExplorer 269 views; @EngMoElgaraihy 3.4k views
- English AI news aggregators auto-followed (confirmed, low volume). 11-04 to 11-06, Exa found a dozen-plus sites writing about it: explainx.ai, fervorai.dev, hermes-ai.net, earlysignal.news, opensourceprojects.dev, claude-updates.com, waveweaver.io, and more, mostly auto-generated articles after the star surge. On the Chinese side there were Cnblogs hands-on tests and a mushroom.cv review.
- The README is itself distribution material (confirmed). The top of the page has a comparison GIF: on the left, a phone-shot TikTok ad; on the right, an AI product-swap recreation. The README is in 9 languages; it has an accuracy table (held-out set 99.6%; with tools alone on platform-transcoded videos 88.6%; with a vision model attached 99.6%; reproduction method in eval/RESULTS.md), plus comparisons with OiiOii and Hypit. Repost accounts mostly just rewrote the README, so posting costs them almost nothing.
- The author's account legacy (partly confirmed). JuneYaooo has 10 repos under his name with 7,241 stars in total, including earlier ones like nihaisha-nishi-tcm (2,226 stars), gpt-image2-ppt-skills (1,426 stars), and social-account-doctor (346 stars). All of these follow the formula "self-media + the name of a popular model or project + agent skill," and the author is already familiar to the Chinese AI tool crowd. On X he has only 169 GitHub followers and his tweets get little attention, so distribution depended entirely on others reposting.
- Not found: paid ads, Product Hunt, HN front page, Reddit discussion. The HN thread only got 4 points.
Why users show up now, and why they stay
- The need appeared at just the right moment. In the second half of 2026, live footage, AI-generated clips, digital humans, and code-driven motion graphics got mixed together in short videos, and anyone making content who sees a hit asks first: "Was this shot or generated?" Getting it wrong means spending money in the wrong place. @ganfanren_ai put it plainly: "If you judge wrong, the money goes to the wrong place."
- Borrowed the understanding REA had already built. "Reverse engineer anything" had already educated the market once, so "video can be reverse-engineered too" can be explained in one sentence, and the barrier to spreading it was almost zero.
- It's light to install. Tell Claude Code / Codex "install xxx, then break down this video" and it sets itself up. It runs offline without a vision model, so the bar is low. Fork rate 14%, so plenty of people actually pulled it down and tried it.
- Whether it sticks around is still unknown: the repo is only 8 days old, with 1 open issues. A Cnblogs post has a hands-on test (I didn't read it closely), but I found no evidence of long-term use.
Differentiation
- The core difference: it judges how each shot was produced, using forensic evidence (frame timing, sensor noise, whether the whole frame pans like a flat image, the AIGC tag in the metadata), then splits the recreation plan into three paths by source: film it, generate it, or code it. Hypit only handles output; video-to-prompt sites assume every video is AI-generated; HyperFrames only does code rebuilds; domestic SaaS tools only break down scripts.
- Secondary differences: a reproducible accuracy benchmark; audio split into vocals, music, and sound effects, with BPM marked; captions exported as SRT / ASS; runs natively inside agents; Apache-2.0 open source.
- Is this why it took off? Only partly. The first push came from the REA name and Chinese repost accounts (distribution). The differentiation is what gave those accounts something to write about: the "real footage / AI / code, judged separately" angle came up in nearly every post. Without it, it's just another reverse-engineering tool, and it would be hard to get shared.
How many people see it and whether anyone copies it
- Visibility: spreading in small circles. The top Chinese AI-tool post on X hit 130k views; the English side got a few thousand views plus a pile of auto-aggregator sites; HN 4 points; no mainstream media coverage. It's a free open-source project, so there's no revenue to disclose.
- Copycats and spinoffs: wusanjay/hermes-plugin-rea-video (11-06, wraps it as a Hermes Agent plugin, 0 stars); @leaf_sanren said "I have a better reverse-video approach, I'll write an article tomorrow". HeyGen's
/reverse-any-videois a competitor that appeared in parallel, not a copy.
What others can borrow
- Riding a hit project's name: once a general hit (REA) takes off, quickly ship a "vertical version of X for Y" and put the original's name right in the repo name, so the repost accounts already have a headline. The author's earlier repos (gpt-image2-…, cheap-claude-video) followed the same playbook.
- Write the README as marketing material: put a striking before/after GIF at the top, a core selling line people can quote ("every shot: filmed, AI, or code?"), plus an accuracy table and multilingual versions, so repost accounts can rewrite it at zero cost.
- Use the agent as the installer: give a single line, "Install <repo>, then ...", and skip the install tutorial.
- Proactively draw a line against the hot competitor (Hypit) in the FAQ, borrowing their heat too.
Still unclear
- How the stars split between Chinese and English users: this time the GitHub stargazers endpoint returned empty / 404, so I couldn't get the list.
- Whether there was paid promotion or mutual shout-outs: whether accounts like Shlcy or 周览资源 were paid posts is unverified.
- Its accuracy numbers come from the author's own benchmark, with only 15+16+10 samples and no third-party verification.
- I didn't check spread on Xiaohongshu, Douyin, Bilibili, or WeChat Official Accounts.
- How long the buzz lasts: the author's earlier 2k-star repo now gains only a dozen or so stars a week, so this one is likely a one-wave thing too, unless it keeps iterating or a big account picks it up again.
