# A site with a million monthly actives open-sourced its engine: AIHOT's 9,600 stars, what you can actually get

**What it is** : a website framework that finds hot topics and writes its own daily briefings by itself. Swap the sources and selection criteria and it becomes a hot-news site for your own industry. It's the exact engine behind the live aihot.news.

**Why it took off** : the author is a big name in the Chinese AI scene. He open-sourced a site that claims a million monthly actives and has been running for more than half a year, and he published all the prompts. Add the "designer who wrote it with AI" story, and it picked up five or six thousand stars in the first week.

**C** **How you can follow** Don't go head-on in AI news aggregation. Copy the open-source playbook instead: first get your own tool used by users, then when you open-source, give a concrete use case to copy, publish the most valuable standards, and keep the form lighter. Room remains for "industry site frameworks" in English or other ecosystems.

C grade: the stars mostly come from the author's traffic and the endorsement of a million-MAU site, which followers can't get. Similar projects already range from 60k to over a thousand stars, and Chinese media covered it widely. None of the industry-specific derivative sites built on it got meaningful stars. Learning the open-source playbook is worthwhile, but following it isn't. Public / widely discussed

AIHOT is the engine behind aihot.news, the AI hot-news site run by "Digital Life Kazhix," a top Chinese AI self-media account. It was open-sourced at the end of 2026 September 39 and got 9,628 stars and 2,251 forks within 11-06 (GitHub). Most of the stars come from the author's fame and the "million-MAU site open-sources" news, which others can't borrow. But the positioning "swap in your own industry" produced twice the fork rate of comparable new projects, and anyone can copy that move. Below: what it is, where the stars came from, who is competing with it, and whether you can build one yourself.

### A post that "hands the fire to everyone"

At 8:26 AM Beijing time on Sep 29, 2026, X account @Khazix0918 posted:

> AIHOT, the AI hot-news site with a million monthly actives, is now open source. Its collection pipeline, selection scoring and clustering mechanism, and even all the production prompts, are open-sourced for everyone. In the past, people kept asking whether someone could build versions of AIHOT for the games, legal, HR, finance and other industries... but I really don't understand those industries... I do know that you do. So, let's hand the fire to everyone. Half a year ago, I was a total development beginner who only understood some product and design.

The repo was created 46 minutes earlier. In the same thread he added: "I got cursed out by many professionals, but after 3 days of tinkering, AIHOT was finally rewritten and launched." One reply under it, from someone who says they've done technical architecture for 11 years: "What technical people call 'professionalism' is mostly a bunch of amateurs... being able to explain the product users will pay for is the most valuable thing!!"

The post carries two stories, each able to spread on its own: "a million-MAU site opens up its whole stash" and "a designer who couldn't read code half a year ago wrote it with AI." The second one travels especially well in the Chinese AI scene.

### Before open-sourcing, it was already a site that had run for more than half a year

AIHOT wasn't built for open-sourcing. According to Kazhix's own WeChat article, in 2026 February it was a Feishu tool he used to find topics for his team, which later became a website. In May 7 it opened to the public for free, and on day one it had 100k visitors and 600k page views (the author's long X post, 05-08). At open-sourcing he claimed a million monthly actives (self-reported, unverified). The About page of aihot.news now says: it monitors 927 sources, including 549 X accounts, has collected 560k items in total, and has published 199 daily issues. It's free and needs no sign-up.

So when people clicked into the repo on 29 September, they didn't find a demo. They found a site already in daily use. The first line of the README makes the boundary clear: "It is the same engine code that runs AIHOT online. Sync exports straight from production. It is not a carefully polished general-purpose framework."

What the repo gives you: six source types (RSS, web pages, JSON APIs, X accounts, WeChat official accounts, and self-push). An LLM does pre-screening, then "the same scoring standard is run independently twice," then it writes Chinese titles and summaries and clusters different sources covering the same event into one. Heat counts "each independent source only once within 48 hours." The daily digest goes out at 8 every morning. MCP, RSS and API are all supported. The most valuable part is the full text of every prompt under `industry/prompts/` and the admission thresholds. For anyone building a content site, that's an editorial standard you can copy and use right away. What it doesn't give: AIHOT's own source list and operating data. The repo only includes 18 overseas AI news sources as examples.

### Where the stars came from

| Date | Stars | Source |
|---|---|---|
| 09-29 the day it was open-sourced | 633 | web archive |
| 10-04 | About 5,400 | Reposted on Reddit, est. |
| 10-09 | 6,712 | GitHub |
| 10-28 | 8,779 | GitHub |
| 11-06 | 9,628 | GitHub |

It got five or six thousand stars in the first week and has been adding 50–200 a day since. Last week (+743) was faster than the week before (+465), but AIHOT itself didn't have a new event. On 11-03 it added +214 in a single day. That day the author open-sourced another project, agent-autoloop (3 days, 3,200 stars), and the new post pulled people back to his profile, where they starred the older project in passing.

Nearly every traffic source I could find points back to the author himself:

- **His own account** . The WeChat Official Account is a top Chinese AI voice (per 2026-08 coverage: 250K Weibo followers; Huxiu estimates about 200K WeChat followers, with a sponsored post going for six figures). The open-source post launched on X first and was mirrored on the WeChat Official Account.

- **The live site itself** . The million-MAU aihot.news page has always carried links to the author and to GitHub.

- **Chinese media rewrites** . Sohu ran a story on the day it was open-sourced. Afterward Zhihu columns, Tencent Cloud Developer Community's "GitHub Daily Trends Flash 2026-10-04" and a hands-on tutorial, OSCHINA and ai-bot.cn all covered it.

- **Cross-promotion among his own projects** . His 5 open-source projects total about 40k stars, all using the same playbook: one article paired with one project. The biggest, khazix-skills, has 22k stars, and it bundles AIHOT's Skill.

I saw no sign of paid promotion or star-buying. That means an unknown author putting the same code online would struggle to reach these numbers. The comparison is right there: functionally similar CloudFlare-AI-Insight-Daily and ai-news-radar each have only about 1,800 stars.

### Why one in four people forks it

2,251 forks, equal to 23% of the star count. Among new projects of the same period with 5,000+ stars, the median fork-to-star ratio is about 11%, so this is double that.

The reason is written in the first line of the README: "Swap in your own sources and your own KnowHow criteria, and it becomes a hot-news site for your industry." It doesn't say "bookmark it to read later." It hands you a concrete thing to do: build a site for your own industry. The README has a "Use this template" button, a document on "adapting it to your industry," and a Docker one-liner. The default is DeepSeek, with Qwen and Zhipu as swaps.

People actually did it. In the repo's Discussions "Show and tell," entries started appearing from 1 October through 4 November:

- AI4Math Radar, an AI radar for math research (10-01)

- xabcnews.com(10-04)

- Marketing Tongjian, "built a platform-trends site for the marketing industry and plugged it into an existing site" (10-05)

- RoboHot, a robotics trends site "for developers and people about to enter the field" (10-13)

- an audio/video tech intelligence site titled "Stop getting stuck in your information cocoon" (10-16)

- Qingyan, an environmental trends site, "with a free WeChat Official Account scraping kit included" (10-21)

- hot.foxnan.com(10-21)

- Fengxiang, a Chinese-language news site for enterprise-services practitioners (11-04)

The author replied to every one, and Nov 1 also opened a post saying "Built a site with AIHOT? Register it here." Forkers can see each other, and later arrivals get a template to copy. That is one reason the long tail keeps climbing.

But note one thing: **these derivative sites themselves haven't earned stars.** As of 11-06, we found no derivative site's open-source repo with more than 20 stars, and many aren't open-sourced at all. Modifying AIHOT into an industry version gets you a site, not fame.

### Who it's competing with

| Project | Launched | Stars (11-06) | How it differs from AIHOT |
|---|---|---|---|
| sansan0/TrendRadar | 2025-04 | 63,464 | Monitors mass-market hot lists on Weibo, Douyin, and Zhihu, with keyword filtering and push notifications to your phone; not a "site" |
| RSSNext/Folo | 2024-04 | About 39,000 | An AI-enhanced RSS reader for personal subscriptions |
| Thysrael/Horizon | 2026-02 | 12,852 | "Your own AI news radar," bilingual Chinese/English daily digests pushed to Feishu, email, and WeChat; last 7 days +1,792 |
| zarazhangrui/follow-builders | 2026-03 | About 7,100 | Summarizes what AI practitioners post on X and in podcasts; it's an Agent Skill |
| ginobefun/BestBlogs | 2024-01 | About 4,100 | The closest Chinese rival: long-form recommendations with AI first-pass filtering plus human editing, but the open-source portion is small |
| kevinho/clawfeed | 2026-02 | 2,405 | Structured summaries of Twitter and RSS |
| LearnPrompt/ai-news-radar | 2026-02 | 1,812 | A 24-hour AI news radar running on GitHub Actions |

This table shows two things. First, the "use AI to filter news" category was already crowded before AIHOT arrived. Second, Horizon deserves a closer look: the author's projects add up to 13k stars across 5 repos, nearly all of it from this one, with no big-name backing. It gained 791 in a single day 11-03 and has grown even faster than AIHOT over the past week. An unknown author can still earn stars in this category, but by going with a lighter form, a personal radar with bilingual output that pushes to the places you already use, rather than a full website that needs Postgres and Docker.

### If it were you

**C: Copy its open-source approach; don't go head-on in this category.** Much of AIHOT's star count comes from the author's fame and a site with a million monthly actives, and you can borrow neither. Comparable projects range from TrendRadar at 60k stars down to small tools with over a thousand, and Chinese media has covered them repeatedly. Forking it into an industry site gets you a site, not stars.

**Who it suits** : developers who already have a content tool they use every day and others use too (an industry daily, competitor monitoring, a paper radar), who want to open-source it to build a name; or people building an "industry trends site framework" for the English world or non-Chinese ecosystems. AIHOT is Chinese-first, and WeChat sources are its strength; on the English side, the strongest existing option is a personal radar like Horizon, and there isn't yet a mature template where "swap in your industry and it's your site" (inference, not individually verified).

**Who it doesn't suit** : people with no owned traffic and no running product who plan to write an "AI news aggregator" from scratch and wait for stars (there are already many similar projects with over a thousand stars); and anyone who expects to modify an industry version of AIHOT and count on the repo becoming famous.

**How to do it** : copy AIHOT's structure, not its features. First run the tool as a product and get a group of people using it daily, so you have a number you can put in a headline. When you open-source it, state a concrete reuse path ("swap in your ××, and it's your ××"), and pair it with a customization guide, a "Use this template" button, and a post for registering derivatives. Make the most valuable parts public: here, that's the prompts, the scoring thresholds, and the calibration samples, not the code. Keep the form lighter than theirs: no database or Docker required; GitHub Actions plus a static page, or Cloudflare Workers, is enough. The lower the barrier, the more forks.

**How to acquire users** : one article per project. The article covers why you built it, how long you've used it, and how many people use it; put the project link at the end and publish in your main community channels (for Chinese, WeChat Official Accounts, Zhihu, and X; for English, Hacker News, Reddit, and X). Once you have the first batch of derivatives, list them in the README, and each derivative site links back to you. If you have more than one project, do as Khazix did with 11-03: use each new project's launch to bring people back to the older ones.

**When to move early** : don't rush a deadline; the window is category heat. This AI news radar wave started in February 2026 (Horizon, clawfeed, and ai-news-radar were all created then) and is still growing, but each additional 10k-star competitor raises the bar for latecomers. If you want to ship an English version or an "industry site framework" for another ecosystem, it's best to have it out before Q1 2027.

**What would show you were wrong** : ① before year-end, a derivative site repo without big-account backing passes 1,000 stars, meaning the "industry version" alone can earn stars, and this path is easier than C; ② in a week when the author posts no new projects, AIHOT's weekly star gain drops below 100, meaning the long tail depends mainly on the author's traffic and organic growth from positioning is smaller than it looks; ③ an English framework in the same category gains over 5,000 stars within a month, meaning the English gap is already taken.

| Thysrael/Horizon | Open source | 2026-02 | 12.9k stars, +7 in the last 1,792 days | Personal AI news radar with bilingual Chinese/English daily digest pushes; no large online site behind it, and it doesn't focus on an industry-site template |
| RSSNext/Folo | Open source | 2024-04 | 39k stars | AI-enhanced RSS reader for personal subscriptions; AIHOT is a site that curates for readers and publishes externally |

| AIbase news / ai-bot.cn / QbitAI and others | Web | Years | Big | Human-edited or content farms, not open-source; competes with aihot.news only on consumer reading |

Where users come from

- **Verified** **Author's own traffic (X, WeChat, Weibo)** : X @Khazix0918 2026-09-29 open-source post; top WeChat account (Jiemian News: 250k Weibo followers; Huxiu estimates the WeChat account at about 200k followers)

- **Verified** **Online product aihot.news driving traffic** : the site claims a million monthly actives; the homepage and about page link to the author and GitHub; 05-07 100k UVs on the first day of open access

- **Verified** **Secondary spread in Chinese media and communities** : Sohu 09-29, Zhihu 10-01, Tencent Cloud 10-04 daily-chart briefs and hands-on write-ups, OSCHINA, ai-bot.cn, Reddit reposts

- **Verified** **Cross-promotion across the author's open-source portfolio** : khazix-skills at 22k stars links to the aihot Skill; 11-03 agent-autoloop, open-sourced that day, gave AIHOT +214 (the highest in the observation period)

- Inferred **Paid promotion / star-buying** : no evidence found; suspect is empty

## Why KKKKhazix/AIHOT took off

> Channel: GitHub · Research date 2026-11-06 · Data card gh_KKKKhazix/AIHOT

### One line

AIHOT is the AI hot-news site aihot.news, which Chinese AI leading self-media creator "Digital Life Khazix" has run for over half a year and which reaches about a million monthly actives. 2026-09-29 open-sourced its entire engine (including all production prompts and the selection thresholds), packaged as a framework where "swap the sources and selection criteria and you have a trends site for your industry." The repo took off because of **the author's huge built-in traffic plus a finished product already validated online by a million people** , not because of novel technology. What sets it apart from similar open-source projects is "open-sourcing a proven live site and making reusability the selling point," which also directly explains its unusually high fork rate.

### 1. Data profile (source: our GitHub library repo_day / repo_profile, GitHub API)

- Repo created 2026-09-28 23:40 (UTC); 09-29 the author announced the open-sourcing on X.

- Star curve: 09-29 archive 633 stars → about 5,400 (10-04, per a Reddit repost "as of Oct 4") → 6,712 (10-09) → 7,878 (10-17) → 8,779 (10-28) → 9,628 (11-06 our database); GitHub API 11-06 at the time 9,685 stars / 2,268 forks.

- In other words, it earned about 5–6 thousand stars in its first week (most of them from the launch burst), then entered a long tail of 50–200 stars per day.

- Over the past 7 days +743; over the first 7 days +465. The "acceleration" mainly came from a single day of +214 on 11-03: **the same day, the author open-sourced a new repo, agent-autoloop** (already 3,500+ stars at 11-06). The new repo's launch post and article sent people back to the author's profile, which lifted AIHOT as a side effect. This was not a new event for AIHOT itself.

- Forks 2,251, fork/star ratio = 23.4%; among new repos in our library of the same age with ≥5000 stars, the median fork ratio is about 11%, so this one is more than double. The high fork count matches its positioning: it's meant for you to take and turn into your own site.

- No suspicious flags (suspect is empty); it has not appeared on GitHub Trending, which doesn't mean much, since Trending only includes repos about 60 days old (see the SCHEMA notes in our library). A third-party "GitHub daily trending brief 2026-10-04" (Tencent Cloud Developer Community) has covered it.

- The author KKKKhazix has 5 repos in total, with about 40k stars combined: khazix-skills 22k (2026-04), human-writing 4.4k (2026-08), AIHOT 9.7k (2026-09), agent-autoloop 3.5k (2026-11), sun-style-writing 0.4k. Every repo follows the same playbook: publish an article on WeChat or X, paired with an open-source repo.

### 2. Why it took off

#### 2.1 Backstory: it was first built as a live product

- Starting in February 2026, Khazix built a Feishu tool for himself and his team (including MCN-signed creators) to track AI hot topics and find story ideas, later turning it into a website. In March he added human-feedback labeling, and in April he decided to open it to the public (source: Khazix's WeChat article "This AI hot-news site that packages my 3 years of self-media experience is now free for everyone," reprinted by Sina Finance 2026-05-07).

- 2026-05-07 opened to the public for free; 100k UVs and 600k PVs on day one; on day two it added Skill / RSS / API access (source: X @Khazix0918 2026-05-08 long post).

- By the time of open-sourcing, it was claimed to have "a million monthly actives" and "100k+ Skill users" (sources: X open-source post 2026-09-29; Sohu "Khazix open-sources AIHOT, a million-monthly-active AI hot-news site" 2026-09-29). The current aihot.news/about says: it monitors 927 sources (X 549, RSS 183, web 145, WeChat 23, API 26), has collected 560k items in total, has published 199 daily issues, and is free with no sign-up.

- So when it was open-sourced, people weren't looking at a demo. They were looking at a site already used daily by large numbers of users, one that had built a reputation in the Chinese AI community.

#### 2.2 Where the users came from

- **The author's own traffic (main channel, with evidence)** : "Digital Life Khazix" is a leading Chinese AI WeChat account (Jiemian News 2026-08 reported: 250k Weibo followers, 600+ WeChat articles; Huxiu aibrief estimates about 200k WeChat followers, with single sponsored posts in the six figures; ranked second on a WeChat account chart in September 2024). The open-source post launched on X (@Khazix0918,2026-09-29), with a simultaneous WeChat post. aihot.news itself is an entry point with a million monthly actives, and its homepage and about page have long linked to the author and GitHub.

- **Secondary spread in Chinese media (with evidence)** : a Sohu article on the day of open-sourcing; a Zhihu column 10-01 "AIHOT: find hot topics yourself, write the daily report yourself…"; a Zhihu post on "integrating a WeChat mini-program in one hour"; Tencent Cloud Developer Community's "GitHub daily trending brief 2026-10-04" and "Building an industry hot-news site that judges articles itself from scratch: AIHOT hands-on"; OSCHINA listing; ai-bot.cn listing; a Reddit r/AngryechoCom repost; reposts by @hongseyanqiu and others on X. English-language aggregator sites have also written about it (search results include headlines like "A news site that writes itself, built to be copied" and "AIHOT turns a morning of news tabs into 1 report"; the specific sites were not verified).

- **Cross-promotion across the author's repos (verified)** : khazix-skills (22k stars) has the aihot Skill in its README; 11-03 agent-autoloop launched the day it opened and drove AIHOT +214 in a single day, the highest in the observation window.

- No evidence of ads, paid acquisition, or star-farming found. Searching our x-radar corpus for "AIHOT / 卡兹克" returns 0 hits. The corpus doesn't cover the Chinese AI scene well, so this doesn't mean nobody on X is talking about it.

#### Why 2.3 people star, fork, or stay

- **Strong narrative** : "Many friends in law, HR, and finance asked me to build one for them too. I don't know your industry, but you do, so I'm handing the spark to everyone." + "I came from design, and half a year ago I couldn't really read code. This was rewritten together with AI." The first line gives a concrete use (build a site for your own industry). The second, "a non-programmer used AI to build a product with millions of monthly users," is exactly the story the Chinese AI scene loves to pass around.

- **It gives you real substance** : the full production prompts, inclusion criteria, dual scoring, event clustering, and heat algorithm are all public, plus SelectBench calibration and MCP / `/agent` access. For people who want a content site or industry intelligence feed, it's a methodology you can copy and use.

- No paid model. The money comes back through the author's main business: WeChat Official Account sponsorships (six figures per post), MCN deals, and personal branding. The about page points readers to the Official Account and a Feishu group (the first group is full). In business terms, open-sourcing AIHOT is **content marketing + brand equity** , not a way to charge for the repo.

### 3. Competitors and differentiation

| Competitors | Form | Launched | Scale | How it differs from AIHOT |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| sansan0/TrendRadar | Open source | 2025-04 | 63.5k stars (in our library: 11-06) | Public opinion and hot-topic monitoring that tracks mainstream trending lists on Weibo, Douyin, Zhihu, and similar platforms, mostly filtered by keyword. AIHOT is a curated site with event clustering and a daily edited digest, aimed at vertical industries. |
| Thysrael/Horizon | Open source | 2026-02 | 12.9k stars, +7 in the last 1,792 days | "Your own AI news radar," bilingual Chinese and English daily digests, mostly personal push delivery (Feishu / email / WeChat). It has no large public site with millions of users behind it and doesn't pitch an industry-site framework. |
| RSSNext/Folo | Open source + app | 2024-04 | 39k stars | An AI-enhanced RSS reader for personal subscriptions. AIHOT is a public site where the curation is already done for the reader. |
| zarazhangrui/follow-builders | Open-source Skill | 2026-03 | 7.1k stars | Summarizes what AI builders post on X and in podcasts, packaged as an Agent Skill. AIHOT is a complete website plus backend. |
| ginobefun/BestBlogs + bestblogs.dev | Open source + website | 2024-01 | 4.1k stars; the site claims 600+ sources | The closest Chinese rival (AI first-pass plus human editorial review for high-quality articles), but it leans toward a long-form reading workflow, has a small open-source footprint, and lacks the "switch to any industry" framing. |
| justlovemaki/CloudFlare-AI-Insight-Daily | Open source | 2025-05 | 1.8k stars | A Cloudflare Workers AI news digest. Features are close, but it has no traffic and no brand. |
| LearnPrompt/ai-news-radar, kevinho/clawfeed | Open source | 2026-02 | Roughly 1.8k and 2.4k stars | A 24-hour AI news radar / Twitter+RSS summarizer, small-tool scale |
| AIbase news, ai-bot.cn, 量子位 (QbitAI), and others | Website | Years | Big | Human-edited or run as site networks, not open source. AIHOT's website competes with them for consumers, but the repo is a different game. |
| FreshRSS / Miniflux | Open source | Years | 16.5k stars and up | Traditional RSS aggregators with no LLM curation |

**Differentiation** :

1. What's open-sourced is the engine of a **site already validated in production with millions of monthly users** , not a demo. The prompts and thresholds are all public, so the methodology can be copied.

2. It positions itself as an "industry hot-news site framework": it turns the AI news vertical into a template so people in law, HR, finance, robotics, and environmental work can fill in their own sources and standards. Most comparable open-source projects are "personal news radars / push tools."

3. Chinese-first, with built-in WeChat Official Account and X sources and MCP / Agent access, fitting how the Chinese AI community actually works.

**Is that why it took off?** Only partly. The five to six thousand stars in the first week came mainly from the author's reach and the "million-user site open-sourced" news hook. An unknown author releasing the same code would struggle to get that number (similar-function libraries like CloudFlare-AI-Insight-Daily only reached one or two thousand stars). But the "build it into your own industry site" positioning drives the **fork rate and long tail** : forks run about double the median for new repos of similar size, and Discussions has a dozen real derivative sites. That comes from the differentiation, not from the name alone.

### 4. Visibility and copycats

- Visibility: in the Chinese AI scene it has been **widely covered** (Sohu, Zhihu, Tencent Cloud Developer Community, OSCHINA, ai-bot.cn, Reddit reposts), and the author self-reports millions of monthly users. No revenue can be disclosed because it's free.

- Copycats and derivatives: a batch of people have already built vertical sites on it (RoboHot, AI4Math Radar, 营销通鉴, 青砚, 大厂观察, 风向 FightKK7/fengxiang, 生信之灵, xabcnews.com, hot.foxnan.com, AIMAN.World, and others; source: repo Discussions). Independent open-source projects in the same space (Horizon, ai-news-radar, clawfeed, Alan-Houxj/ai-news-follow, and others) existed earlier, and most of them predate it.

### 5. What to borrow

- **Build the tool you use into a live product that gets users first, then open-source the engine** : launching open source with the credibility of "million monthly users" and a live site you can see working.

- **Name a specific use for the open source** ("swap in your own industry"), and back it with customization docs, example sources, and a registry so forks become a community: people build sites and can see each other's work.

- **"Built by a non-programmer with AI"** is a narrative that travels well in the Chinese AI scene.

- A matrix of **one article, one library** : several libraries feed traffic to each other (11-03 a new library launch lifts the older ones).

- In content, make the thresholds, prompts, and calibration samples public. That's worth more than the code itself.

### 6. Uncertain

- "Millions of monthly users" and "100k Skill users" are self-reported and unverified.

- How many derivative sites are actually running, and for how long, is unverified. How many forks were really deployed is unknown.

- Stargazer timestamps are unavailable (the GitHub API returns 404 for this repo), so the day-by-day curve from 09-29 to 10-09 is inferred from archived snapshots and third-party reposts (about 5,400 stars came from a Reddit repost at 10-04).

- The source of the specific English aggregator coverage was not verified.

- Whether the author keeps syncing the open-source version (the README itself says "no guarantee every change will be synced") determines whether the long tail holds.
