# One person had AI rebuild FL Studio, and the vendor's forum called for legal action: 25 days, 648 stars

**What it is** A free, open-source music production app (DAW) whose interface, shortcuts and bundled plugins mirror FL Studio. It can open FL project files and installs on Windows, macOS and Linux.

**Why it blew up** In October, "clone paid software with AI" was the hot topic, and FL still had no Linux version. The producer channel Busy Works Beats, with 1.82M subscribers, posted two videos pushing it on Nov 1 and 3, and a clone-accusation thread on the official forum gave it another round of exposure.

**B** **How you could follow this** Stop building yet another open-source FL. Take the method and apply it to other software: find professional tools with a large user base and an obvious gap (no Linux version, abandoned, price hikes) and closed project files. Use an agent to rebuild the behavior, make the first version open the vendor's old projects, publish compatibility as a public table, keep the look further from the original, then pitch it to the big YouTubers in that niche and on HN and Reddit with "I reverse-engineered XX with an agent."

Grade B: "AI rebuilds a mainstream pro tool and fills a missing platform" has just been shown to earn stars, and latecomers can still win. But the FL niche already has five or six projects, the legal risk of a look that hugs the original is real, and the "AI clone" buzz has a limited window. Buzz in niche circles

FL Studio is the most-used DAW among beatmakers, and it has never had a Linux version. In October 2026, a developer named Ka1-S used an AI agent to rebuild FL round by round, "matching behavior," and shipped LYNX SHARE: free, open source, with FL's interface, shortcuts and bundled plugins, able to open .flp projects, installable on all three platforms. It started two days after a rival in the same space, and that rival had gotten hot first, yet LYNX ended up ahead. If you want your open-source project to get stars this way, here's what to look at: which trend it rides, why it came out on top, how much room the path has left, and where the risks are.

### The Oct 30 post

On Oct 30, 2026, a thread appeared on the official forum of Image-Line, the developer of FL Studio, titled "Someone vibe coded (reverse engineered) Flstudio". The poster linked the LYNX SHARE GitHub repo and opened with: "I don't usually do this, but this one bugs me. Image-Line team, this needs to be stopped." Next line: "AI reverse engineering this piece of junk machine needs some legal pressure." Official tech support replied quickly: "Thanks for the report, we're aware..." The thread ran past 20 replies, with some calling it "large-scale infringement" and others answering: "This runs on Linux. The more IL refuses to do it..."

In November 3, someone brought the thread into LYNX's issue tracker under the title "You sure this project will survive?" That day the author replied: this is an independent open-source project, unrelated to Image-Line, with no FL code, art, presets or samples. The person asking was himself an FL user, and he wrote: "I fully support this project. I don't know why they're talking so nastily over there. I can finally run something FL-like natively on Linux."

These days were when LYNX climbed fastest: +121 stars on Nov 2, +131 on Nov 6. As of Nov 6 (GitHub) it had 648 stars and 72 forks, and the repo was only 25 days old.

### What it is

A DAW (digital audio workstation) written in C++20 and JUCE, licensed AGPL-3.0, completely free: no donation button, and the website only offers downloads. The Channel Rack, piano roll, Playlist and mixer that FL users know are all there. It opens .flp projects and loads VST3 and CLAP plugins. Installers exist for Windows, macOS and Linux, and it's also on the Microsoft Store and SourceForge.

Its commit history and docs are full of strings like "REA round 174b" and "REA_rodada116". REA is a GitHub tool (436k stars) that lets an AI agent "reverse-engineer any software": the agent repeatedly observes the original's behavior and writes code that behaves the same, instead of decompiling the original's code. LYNX was refined through that loop, one round at a time. The docs include Portuguese words, so the author may be Brazilian (inference).

### Why now

**"AI clones paid software" was October's hot topic.** REA and remade.wiki, which catalogs AI-remade versions of software, turned this into a public conversation. In October 25, Joe Maddalone posted a video, "The AI Cloning Will Continue Until Morale Improves," with 28k views.

**A producer channel with 1.82M subscribers made "open-source FL" a topic, but LYNX wasn't the first one it praised.** In October 26, the YouTube channel Busy Works Beats posted "FL Studio is now Open Source!", with 69k views. It covered Lemon Studio, a Rust project that had started two days before LYNX. At that point LYNX had only 63 stars.

**LYNX caught the second wave.** On Nov 1, Busy Works posted "NEW Open Source FL Studio!" with 28k views, and the description linked LYNX's website and GitHub. On Nov 3 it posted "Making a Beat on the 'Open Source' FL STUDIO…" with 12k views. The author Ka1-S thanked viewers in the comments, saying "it's updated every day." The download numbers line up: October's v0.1.21 release (31) got 4,854 downloads, and November's v0.1.23 (3) got 4,128. Earlier versions had only dozens to hundreds each (GitHub Releases, 11-06). The 25 releases total about 13.1k downloads, not counting the Microsoft Store.

**No Linux version is the reason users give most often.** Lines like "FL can't run natively on Linux, it's the only reason I'm still on Windows" keep showing up in YouTube comments and issues.

**The people criticizing it are also spreading it.** The Image-Line forum thread and the HN comment "same name, same colors, same interface, even the logo looks alike" became reasons to share it.

### Same niche, so why did it come out on top?

More than one "open-source FL" appeared in October (GitHub, 11-06):

| Project | Repo created | star | Approach |
|---|---|---|---|
| Lemon Studio | 10-10 | 776 (7 days +316) | Written in Rust, looks like FL; Busy Works promoted it first |
| **LYNX SHARE** | 10-12 | 648 (7 days +494) | Opens .flp; recreates FL's bundled plugins one by one, with a table of third-party plugin replacements |
| Gridline | 10-18 | 134 | Imports and exports .flp, more platforms, no promotion |
| HoneyDew | 10-14 | 101 | Clones the mobile FL Studio Mobile |
| Orchard Studio, ArkaneDAW, Pulse Studio and others | October | Each has a few to twenty-some stars | Browser-based or Linux-first, never got running |
| LMMS (for comparison) | From ¥2014 | 10.6k | Long-standing "free FL alternative," doesn't read .flp |

Lemon still leads overall, but LYNX has been gaining faster over the last week. The difference is how close it looks. Lemon matches the interface; LYNX matches the project:

- **It opens your old projects.** For long-time FL users, the biggest fear in switching is that old projects won't open. .flp import is its main selling point.

- **It turns "how close" into a table.** It grades each FL bundled plugin as Exact, Near-exact or Close, based on the author's own status table. 12 generators and 34 effects are marked Exact (self-tested, no third-party verification). It also publishes self-tested claims of using 2.5–7 times less memory and rendering 2–3 times faster than FL 2026. YouTubers can use this directly in videos.

- **It fills the gaps left by third-party plugins.** A table maps 56 popular paid plugins (FabFilter, Valhalla, Waves, Soundtoys, Antares) to LYNX's own replacements. When a project opens with a missing plugin, the replacement takes its place, with parameters preserved where possible.

- **Updates are fast enough to see.** 25 days, 25 releases, dozens of commits a day, and issues often fixed the same day with the author replying personally. The issue tracker has over 80 real reports, specific problems like "crashes when u-he Presswerk loads" and "context menu misplaced on Fedora KDE Wayland." It doesn't look like star-farming.

It pulled even nearby projects in: the Dutch blogger soundfabrics had been building his own FL reverse-engineering project, but on his site he wrote "Cancelled, because Lynx Share came out. I'm now contributing to it."

So the order was: Lemon and Busy Works heated up the niche first, and LYNX caught the second wave with "more complete, updating faster." Differentiation let it win among its peers, but the topic itself is what made this category take off.

### Where the stars came from

| Channel | What happened | Weight |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube producer channels | Busy Works Beats posted 11-01 and 11-03 (28k and 12k views), with links in the descriptions; smaller Spanish and English channels followed | The biggest driver |
| The author's own posts | HN "I'm building LYNX…" 10-29 with 27 points and 18 comments; Reddit r/ClaudeCode and r/coolgithubprojects posts "I used Claude to reverse-engineer FL Studio" | The spark |
| Controversy | The Image-Line official forum thread, issue #49, and the HN plagiarism argument | Amplification |
| Reposts and stores | HN aggregator sites, small Spanish and German media, AlternativeTo, Microsoft Store | long tail |

I didn't see any paid promotion or coverage by mainstream tech media. Meanwhile, a batch of bait repos named after "FL Studio" with cracked-software lures appeared on GitHub around the same time, which shows the term itself carries a lot of search volume.

### The sword hanging overhead

The name can change (it already went from LYNX to LYNX SHARE), but the colors, interface layout and plugin names all hug the original. Image-Line has so far only said "we're aware." A DMCA notice or a lawyer's letter could get the GitHub repo taken down overnight, and that is the biggest variable for this kind of project. Whether the author's "clean-room, no FL assets, reads only the user's own installed content" stance holds up depends on how the vendor responds (inference).

Two other things are invisible from the outside: how many of the downloaders actually stick around (it has no usage stats), and how long one person can keep this pace going while giving the software away for free.

### If it were you

**B: worth trying, the opening is there, but the weaknesses are obvious.** "Use an agent to rebuild a mainstream pro tool that matches behavior, filling a platform its maker won't support" has just been shown to earn stars, and latecomers can still win. But the FL niche already has five or six projects, the legal risk is real, and the "AI clone" buzz won't last forever.

**Who it suits** : developers who know one category of pro software (audio, image, CAD, layout, etc.), who can run a long agent-driven dev loop, and who can accept that the project could be taken down at any time.

**Who it doesn't suit** : anyone who wants to build another "open-source FL" (Lemon and LYNX already hold the top two spots, and the third has only tens to about a hundred stars); anyone who wants to make money from it; anyone who can't handle a lawyer's letter.

**How to do it:**

1. Stop picking FL. Look for software with the same structure: a large user base, one clear gap (no Linux version, abandoned, price hikes or a subscription switch that angered users), closed project file formats, and users stuck with old projects they can't move off of.

2. The first version has to open the vendor's project files. That's where LYNX beat Lemon, and it's the only reason old users will try it.

3. Publish compatibility in numbers: grading tables, side-by-side tests, memory and speed data, plus a table mapping "their paid plugin or extension → your replacement." These are ready-made material for YouTubers and sharers.

4. Keep the name, logo and colors further from the original, don't touch the vendor's assets or code, and document the clean-room process clearly. LYNX is the cautionary example here: the recognizability it saved is paid for in legal risk.

5. Keep a visible release cadence and reply to issues the same day. The biggest advantage of an agent pipeline is speed, so make sure users can see it.

**How to get users** : find the YouTube creators in this software's user community (for audio, that's channels like Busy Works, which do tutorials and beat content), then wait for them to pick the topic, or send them a demo video directly. Have the author reply to the comments on the video. On HN and the Reddit AI coding subs (r/ClaudeCode and similar), post "I reverse-engineered XX with an agent", because the post itself is the content. Don't avoid objections from the original vendor's community; they'll spread it for you.

**When to move** : while "AI clones paid software" is still a hot topic, ship a demo you can show before Q1 of 2027 (inferred). Once these projects are common enough to feel stale, the big channels stop covering them.

**What would mean we're wrong** : ① If Image-Line files a DMCA and LYNX or Lemon gets taken down, the legal cost of this path is higher than expected. Either fully change the look or don't touch it. ② If over the next month or two, other AI rebuilds of software get hundreds to thousands of stars in a row, the window is wider than expected and this can move up to A. ③ The reverse: if LYNX's stars and downloads fall to single digits a day soon after Busy Works stops covering it, this kind of project was riding one or two videos, not sustained demand.

## Why LYNX SHARE (Ka1-S/LYNX-SHARE) took off

> Channel: GitHub | repo created 2026-10-12 | as of 2026-11-06:648 stars (our GitHub repo) / live GitHub API 697 stars, 72 forks, AGPL-3.0, C++20 + JUCE 8. In one line: a free, open-source DAW built by one person using an AI agent, following REA's "behavioral reverse engineering" method on FL Studio. The interface, shortcuts and bundled plugins all copy FL. It opens .flp projects directly and runs on Windows, macOS and Linux.

### Verdict

LYNX SHARE didn't take off on its own distribution. It caught a platform-level wave. In October 2026, "cloning paid software with AI agents" became a hot topic (the REA reverse-engineering tool has 436k stars, and remade.wiki lists all kinds of rebuilds). FL Studio is the beatmaker DAW with the largest install base that is also notorious for having no Linux version. In October, Busy Works Beats, a YouTube channel with 26,1.82M subscribers, published "FL Studio is now Open Source!" (69k views), which first boosted the rival Lemon Studio and turned "open source FL" into a theme. In November it released three LYNX videos in a row (28k / 55k (inferred) / 12k views) between 1 and 3, and LYNX's stars and downloads jumped a tier over those three days. Within its category it won because the product itself is the "closest to real FL": it opens .flp directly, claims bit-exact output for dozens of native FL plugins, and includes a table that automatically swaps in LYNX's own replacement plugins when FabFilter, Valhalla or Waves aren't installed. It also ships absurdly fast, with 25 releases in 25 days and dozens of commits a day. People on the Image-Line official forum attacked it and called for legal action, and that controversy brought in another wave of attention.

### 1. Growth data

| Date | stars | fork | Event |
|---|---|---|---|
| 10-12 | 0 | | Repo created |
| 10-13 | | | v0.1.0-alpha |
| 10-26 | 63 | 7 | Busy Works Beats released "FL Studio is now Open Source!", about Lemon Studio. |
| 10-28 | 106 | 12 | First HN post (2 points); v0.1.19 downloads 712 |
| 10-29 | 123 | 14 | HN "I'm building LYNX…" 27 points, 18 comments; Reddit r/ClaudeCode and r/coolgithubprojects posts "I'm using Claude to reverse engineer FL Studio"; renamed LYNX → LYNX SHARE (v0.1.20) |
| 10-30 | 154 | 17 | Image-Line official forum opened the thread "Someone vibe coded (reverse engineered) Flstudio" (28 replies). Official tech support replied "We are already aware…". Spanish-language YouTuber prosycons made a Lemon vs. Lynx comparison. |
| 10-31 | 214 | 19 | v0.1.21 released, downloads 4,854 (the most of any version) |
| 11-01 | 237 | 20 | Busy Works Beats "NEW Open Source FL Studio!" (28k views, description links LYNX) |
| 11-02 | 358 | 32 | +121 |
| 11-03 | 446 | 45 | Busy Works Beats "Making a Beat on the 'Open Source' FL STUDIO…" (12k); v0.1.23 downloads 4,128 |
| 11-06 | 648 | 72 | +131 (single-day high); v0.1.24 |

- The star curve comes from our github repo_day table (daily data from 10-26 on). Download counts come from the GitHub Releases API (checked 2026-11-06): installers across 25 releases total about **13.1k downloads** , excluding the Microsoft Store (9NQRFBFDCX6N) and SourceForge mirrors.

- Fork ratio is about 11%, normal for a new repo of this age, with no sign of star farming. The issues have 80+ real user bug reports and feature requests about very specific things like u-he Presswerk crashes and Fedora KDE Wayland context-menu problems.

- Completely free: no FUNDING.yml, no donation link, the website only offers downloads.

### II. Competitors

| Name | Where | Launched | Scale | How it differs from LYNX |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| FL Studio(Image-Line) | Commercial software | 1997 | Leading beatmaker DAW. One-time purchase with free lifetime upgrades. | The original being copied. No native Linux version, which is the point LYNX gets shared for most. |
| Lemon Studio(ItsAlphaNeon) | Open source (Rust) | 2026-10-10 | 776 stars, 7 days +316 (our repo 11-06) | The top rival in the same theme. Created two days before LYNX and got attention first: Busy Works' 10-26 video with 69k views is about it. A Michael Lane modded version also drove a fan-video with 20k views. It leans on "looks like FL" and lacks LYNX's bit-exact plugin recreations and third-party plugin comparison table. |
| Gridline(lolitemaultes) | Open source (GPL-3.0) | 2026-10-18 | 134 stars | Also imports .flp and can export back to FL format, with more platforms (including ARM and BSD), but far less buzz. |
| HoneyDew(daijro) | Open source (Rust) | 2026-10-14 | 101 stars | Clones FL Studio Mobile |
| Orchard Studio, ArkaneDAW, Pulse Studio and others | Open source | 2026-10 | A few to a couple dozen stars each | Browser-based or Linux-first DAWs in the FL style. None got running. |
| LMMS | Open source | From ¥2014 | 10.6K stars | Long-running "free FL alternative", but it doesn't read .flp and the interface is different. Commenters say "LMMS users might switch". |
| Zrythm, Ardour, openDAW, GridSound | Open source | Years | 1.9k–5.4k stars | General-purpose DAWs that don't follow the FL workflow |

Also, around the same time, a batch of fake-crack bait repos with "FL Studio" in the name appeared on GitHub (Fl-Studio-26-Respocket-Installer and similar), showing that the term "FL Studio" alone draws a lot of traffic.

### 3. Growth tactics (evidence)

1. **YouTube producer channels (confirmed, the main driver)** : Busy Works Beats (1.82M subscribers)11-01 posted "NEW Open Source FL Studio!" (27,756 views, 103 comments; the description links the LYNX website and GitHub), 11-03 posted "Making a Beat on the "Open Source" FL STUDIO…" (12,485 views); the same day another video, "they just open sourced FL Studio!…" (55,308 views), doesn't say which project it covers, unverified. The author Ka1-S left a thank-you comment under the video, saying "updating every day". Plenty of copycat shorts too: the Spanish-language prosycons (1,731 / 1,197), quickfinesse's "FL Studio, rebuilt for free", Calvin Williamson's "Lynx Share - MCP coming soon", Majed Salih's "FL STUDIO DESTROYER", plus reposts on sites like camltones.com.

2. **Author posted it themselves (confirmed)** : two HN posts (10-28 2 points; 10-29 27 points, 18 comments, account ka1s). Reddit r/ClaudeCode, r/coolgithubprojects (titled "I'm using Claude to do reverse engineering at fl studio"), r/SaaS, r/BestGitHubRepos. It was then reposted by a batch of HN aggregators, ISVWorld, gokawiil, the Spanish-language ecosistemastartup.com, and the German MacTechNews forum.

3. **Disputed, but confirmed:** On the Image-Line official forum, a thread titled "Someone vibe coded (reverse engineered) Flstudio" (post 10-30) asks for "legal pressure" against an "A.I reverse engineering slop machine." Official tech support has replied that they are aware of it. On HN, someone wrote, "same names, same colors, same UI, even the logo." In issue #49, "You sure this project will survive?", a user linked that forum thread, and the author publicly responded: clean-room, with no FL code or assets, and anything FL ships with is read from the user's own install.

4. **Platform moment / topic tailwind (confirmed):** REA (morluto/rea, "Reverse engineer anything with agents", 436,620 stars, created 2026-04) and remade.wiki made "AI remakes paid software" a public topic in October. Joe Maddalone's video "The AI Cloning Will Continue Until Morale Improves" got 10-25 28k views, and that led to Busy Works' Lemon video. LYNX's commits and docs are full of "REA round 174b" and "docs/analise/REA_rodada116.md", which means it was built round by round following REA's process.

5. **Stores and download sites (confirmed, minor effect):** Listed on the Microsoft Store, SourceForge, and AlternativeTo, and indexed by download sites like filecr.

6. **Absorbed similar developers (confirmed):** Dutch blogger soundfabrics had been building an REA-based FL Studio project. He wrote that it was "cancelled, because Lynx Share came out, and I'm now contributing code to it."

7. No evidence of ad spend found; our X corpus has nothing on it.

### 4. Why it made the list

- **Right topic at the right time:** AI cloning of paid software was in its moment. FL is the most mainstream DAW among beatmakers, so "open-source FL" was built-in clickbait material, and big YouTube channels picked it up on their own.

- **Big-channel endorsements hit at once:** v0.1.21 (10-31) and v0.1.23 (11-03) got 4,854 and 4,128 downloads respectively, timed right after Busy Works' 11-01 and 11-03 videos. Before that, each version had only dozens to hundreds.

- **Compatibility that actually works:** It opens .flp files and claims dozens of native FL plugins match bit for bit. It reads the timbre tables from the user's local FL install. For longtime FL users, the cost of switching is the lowest.

- **A real need for Linux users:** YouTube and issue threads repeatedly say, "FL doesn't run natively on Linux, and that's the only reason I'm still on Windows."

- **Updates faster than an agent pipeline:** 25 versions in 25 days, dozens of merges a day, issues fixed the same day, and the author replies personally. Users and YouTubers can see it getting better every day.

- **Controversy amplified it:** Opposition posts from the FL community and the Image-Line forum became news themselves.

### 5. Differentiation

Among the same batch of open-source FL projects, Lemon Studio went for "looks like it", while LYNX went for "engineering-grade likeness": it claims FL-native plugins that match bit for bit (per its own status table, 12 generators and 34 effects marked Exact), full .flp import, and a comparison table of 56 popular third-party plugins (FabFilter / Valhalla / Waves / Soundtoys / Antares) with LYNX's in-house replacements. When a project is missing a plugin, it swaps in the replacement automatically and keeps the settings. It also posts self-tested numbers: 2026 to 2.5–7 times less memory than FL and 2–3 times faster rendering. **These differences are why it overtook the others in its category** , but they are not why it took off. The theme was heating up thanks to Lemon Studio first. LYNX caught Busy Works' second wave of traffic after the theme was already hot, by being more complete and updating faster. In 7 days its stars grew by 494, passing Lemon's 316.

### 6. Visibility

It's spreading in small circles and getting bigger. On HN, 27 points. Several threads on Reddit. In YouTube producer circles, a channel with 1.82M subscribers ran two or three videos on it. Image-Line's official forum has a dedicated thread, and a dozen or more aggregator sites and small outlets have reposted it. But no mainstream tech media has covered it, and our X corpus has nothing on it either. It charges nothing, so there is no public revenue to speak of.

### VII. Copycats

Yes. Same-topic projects include Lemon Studio (two days earlier), Gridline, HoneyDew (FL Mobile), Orchard Studio, ArkaneDAW, and Pulse Studio, all appearing in October. Michael Lane modded Lemon. soundfabrics dropped his own project and came over to contribute code to LYNX.

### VIII. What to take from it

- Look for professional software with a large user base, a clear gap (here, a Linux version), and a closed file format. Use agents for behavioral reverse engineering, and make "opens your old projects" the first selling point.

- Publish compatibility as numbers (Exact / Near-exact / Close grades, benchmarks). Give YouTubers ready-made talking points and visuals.

- The author personally comments on big channels' videos and replies to issues the same day, and ships releases frequently. That turns "getting better every day" into something people share.

- Use a "XX plugin → our replacement" comparison table to capture search traffic and discussion around third-party plugins.

- The risks are also a lesson: names, colors, and plugin names that sit close to the originals carry high legal risk.

### IX. Uncertainties

- Will Image-Line send a DMCA takedown or a lawyer's letter? They have only said they are "aware." Trademark and UI similarity are the make-or-break variables for this kind of project.

- "Bit-for-bit identical" is the author's own self-test, with no third-party verification.

- How many people who download it actually stay and use it is unknown: there is no telemetry, only issue activity to go by.

- Whether the Busy Works video with 55k views, "they just open sourced FL Studio!…" (on 11-01), is about LYNX or Lemon is unverified. I also couldn't find the direct source of the single-day 11-06 +131.

- Author identity: the GitHub account was created in 2020, with only 3 public repos. The docs use Portuguese words (rodada, analise), so the author is presumably a Brazilian developer, but unverified. The project is free, and how it will be sustained going forward is unclear.
