# "Can't wait for Microduck? Build your own today": how a Wuxi robot-dog company got 1,800 stars

**What it is** An open-source bipedal robot duck that can be 3D printed, copying Microduck's shape and joints, with the main controller swapped for an Arduino UNO Q. STL, PCB, BOM, and assembly manual are all public.

**Why it took off** The official Microduck has a waitlist of 4–6 months and its hardware isn't open source, so this project caught the people who didn't want to wait with "build it yourself." On October 22–23, GTC Berlin pushed the whole robot-duck category into the spotlight, and it doubled that week.

**C** **How you could follow it** Don't clone the sixth duck. If you want in, do what it hasn't: local servo adaptation, camera extensions, or pure simulation tutorials. The more valuable thing is to note this playbook and apply it to the next "big-company hit with a waitlist and closed hardware."

C grade: the stars mainly came from Microduck and a single news event. The category already has five or six replica repos with over a thousand stars, and daily growth has fallen from 268 to 14~20. Its edge comes from company-level RL capabilities and distribution that individuals can't access, so what you can learn is the playbook, not copying the project. Chatter in niche circles

In Sep 2026 (24), someone from Wuxi's LuWu Intelligent posted on r/arduino with the title "Tired of waiting for Microduck? Build your own Arduino Uno Q Duck TODAY!" The same day, LuwuDynamics/xgoduck_hardware appeared on GitHub: a bipedal robot duck that can be 3D printed, with STL, PCB, BOM, and assembly manual all public. 43 days later (11-06) it had 1,796 stars and 232 forks, more than half of which came in the five days after Oct 23, when Jensen Huang was on stage at GTC Berlin with four official Microducks. Below: what it is, where the stars came from, why it's hard for someone else to copy it, and what you can actually take from it.

### What it is

A robot duck about 25 cm tall, with 15 Feetech 1910 servos driving the legs, feet, neck, and head. The main controller is the Arduino 2025 UNO Q, a new board released that year (a Linux-running Qualcomm chip plus an STM32), with a LuWu-designed expansion board on top handling power, the servo bus, and a six-axis IMU. The repo description's first line states its origin: "adapted from Pollen Robotics' Microduck." The shape, the layout and order of the 15 joints all follow Microduck; the electronics are its own.

Besides the hardware repo there are two companion repos: one for runtime (walking, getting up after falling, carrying objects, UNO Q firmware, and web remote control), and one for reinforcement-learning training. When Hackster editor Nick Bild wrote about it in Sep 26, his headline was "The DIY Alternative to Microduck," and his last line was: "If you don't want to wait for Microduck, there's now another option."

### Whose momentum it rode

Microduck is a desktop robot duck from Pollen Robotics, a Hugging Face company, released in Aug 27 at $399. Pre-orders sold $24M in 2.6 hours (TechCrunch). Two problems faced anyone who wanted one:

- **Not available to buy.** Orders are backed up by several months. 10-23 TechCrunch reported about 20k units sold, and new orders are taking 4–6 months to ship.

- **The hardware isn't open source.** The software, simulation, and training stack is Apache-2.0, but the BOM, CAD, and PCB were not released, and Pollen asked the press not to call it "open-source hardware."

LuWu happened to sit right in these two gaps. It isn't an individual hobbyist; it's a company that has spent years on XGO robot dogs and RIG desktop robots. In early September, founder Liu Pengfei told Times Weekly that they had posted an XGO Duck video earlier that year (based on Pollen's previous-generation Open Duck Mini). Pollen then contacted them saying it had a commercialization plan. After discussion, the team decided not to sell whole units and instead went fully open source: "Because the Microduck hardware isn't open, we'll build a fully open project so global enthusiasts can replicate it." He also said many domestic companies are doing similar things, but "none of them have got one running yet."

### Which days the stars came in

| Date | star | What happened those days |
|---|---|---|
| 09-24 | 0 | Repo created, same-day post on r/arduino |
| 09-29 | 391 | Coverage from Hackster, Hackaday.io, 3druck; r/arduino post "We adapted Microduck for Arduino UNO Q" with 320 upvotes |
| 10-22 | 701 | Daily +10~15 in between; named in the Arduino official blog 10-08, listed on Project Hub 10-16 |
| 10-23 | 857(+156) | The day after GTC Berlin; LuWu's official store listed a $400 electronics kit that day |
| 10-24 | 1,125(+268) | Single-day peak |
| 10-28 | 1,526 | |
| 11-06 | 1,796 | Daily growth back to 14~20 |

(GitHub daily star counts, as of 11-06)

That 10-23 jump wasn't limited to it. In the same window, pollen-robotics/microduck went from 10-22 9,690 to 10-26 12,065, with a single-day peak of +818. Two domestic individual replica repos, AI-FanGe/Microduck-build-tutorial and fanhao375/microduck-replica, also hit their single-day peaks around 10-28. **The whole "robot duck" category was lifted by one news event, and this was the one among them that held on best.**

### Where the traffic comes from

Several channels were built by the project itself, and each one put the Microduck name in the title:

1. **Reddit, posted by the team.** Posting as "I'm part of the team" in r/arduino and r/robotics from 9-16 to 10-15, at least six posts, top post 320 upvotes and 39 comments.

2. **自家 YouTube 频道 CyberBionic Maker。** 9-27 的介绍片「Meet XGO-Duck」9.9 万播放,10-14 的装配教程「How to Build XGO-Duck」31.8 万播放;这些视频又被嵌进了 MakerWorld 模型页和 Arduino Project Hub。

3. **Arduino official.** UNO Q is a new board, and Arduino needs projects it can showcase. 10-08's "UNO Q One-Year Anniversary" blog named it, and 10-16 added an official project page on Project Hub. Pick a board the platform is pushing, and you get free exposure across the whole community.

4. **Maker media.** Hackster, 3druck, circuit.rocks, Italy's futuranet and open-electronics, and India's circuitdigest all covered it. In Chinese there were Times Weekly interviews and Zhihu articles, the latter arguing that "on hardware openness, LuWu is more thorough than Microduck."

5. **Kit sales on GTC day.** A $400 electronics kit (everything except the UNO Q) went on sale at 10-23, and the README switched its purchase link to it that same day.

It hasn't been on GitHub Trending, there are no Hacker News posts about it, and I couldn't find any big X accounts writing about it. Only Hackster's official account 9-26 reposted it once.

### What the people it attracts want

Reading the issues, you see two kinds of people. Some are genuinely going to build it: a developer in Brazil asked whether the servos could be swapped, because the 1910 on AliExpress with import tax costs four times the original price, and 15 of them don't add up. The maintainer replied that swapping servos means redrawing the bracket and retraining the policy, which is "almost starting from scratch." He wrote back: "Then I'll treat it as a learning project and share it when it's done." Others ask about the initial pose of the 0 servos, validated PCB production files, and how to choose the battery.

The other kind came in through GTC and thought they were buying Microduck. 10-24, that is, the day after the kit launched, someone opened an issue: "Camera? I thought the XGO Duck had a camera?" Three days later another one: "camera and lidar are missing, important part of this design is missing." The open-source XGO-Duck really doesn't include a camera or lidar. The assembled kit sold in China on Taobao adds audio, camera and ToF.

### Where the money comes back (for Luwu)

The open source earns nothing. Luwu sells hardware: a $20 expansion board (listed 9-28), a $50 battery plus charger, and $400 electronics kits, with assembled kits in China too. The official store banner says "working hard to ship the backlog," the base model is marked "almost sold out," and shipments go out in weekly batches. It's clearly selling, but how much isn't disclosed (unverified). This is a company that originally sold assembled robots, using an open-source repo as an ad slot.

This section isn't directly useful to readers who want stars, but it explains why it's more complete than individual clones: someone is paid to maintain the PCB versions, reply to issues, and film assembly videos.

### Who it's competing with for the same people

| Project | stars (around 11-06) | How it differs |
|---|---|---|
| pollen-robotics/microduck | 13,473 | The original, software only |
| apirrone/Open_Duck_Mini | 4,651 | Microduck's predecessor, older design, pure DIY |
| AI-FanGe/Microduck-build-tutorial | 1,704 | Chinese individual clone tutorial, built by 9-04 |
| fanhao375/microduck-replica | 1,583 | Chinese individual clone, also uses 1910, runs on real hardware, built by 8-28 |
| kissqy/Microduck-kissqy | 441 | Clone plus custom HAT, Chinese control center, built by 10-07 |

Several individual Chinese clone repos have about as many stars, and they started earlier. What XGO-Duck adds is the Arduino and overseas media line, plus the credibility of "a company that makes it and sells boards." A ring of community remixes has grown around it: third-party xgo-duck.com beginner assembly guides, roboduckbuild.com assembly diaries, and Chinese clone tutorials on Silicon Tribe. I didn't find any that copy XGO-Duck directly.

### How many stars would an individual get copying it

Hard. Broken down, its 1,800 stars are held up by roughly three things:

- **The Microduck name and that GTC appearance.** Anyone can ride that, but five or six clone repos already are, and the category's stars have mostly been split up. Once December's genuine Microduck starts shipping in bulk, the "can't wait" reason gets weaker (inference).

- **An RL policy that really walks and can get itself back up.** The founder's line "none of them could run" isn't pure self-praise: a biped with 15 degrees of freedom needs retraining whenever the servos change, and that's work only teams with years of legged robotics experience can reliably pull off.

- **The company's distribution.** Its own YouTube channel, its Arduino partnership, and a supply chain that can list a kit within a day are things an individual developer doesn't have.

There are still open gaps, but they're all small:

- **A version that can be bought outside China.** The Brazil issue shows that 1910 becomes expensive once it leaves China, and some people are willing to retrain it themselves. Whoever first ships a branch using servos that can be bought locally in Europe or the US, with a retrained policy, gets that crowd.

- **Camera / radar extensions.** Two issues are already asking for this. Adding a vision module and matching code to the open-source version is the part it hasn't done itself.

- **Starting from pure simulation.** Many people get stuck on $400+ of hardware. A beginner tutorial that trains a duck to walk from scratch in MuJoCo / Isaac Lab, with no real robot, has a much lower bar (inference; I didn't check how many similar projects exist).

Taken today, none of these directions is likely to reach a thousand stars on its own. They're byproducts of XGO-Duck and Microduck, their heat rides on the main act, and the main act's heat is already fading.

### If it were you

**C. You can learn something, but cloning a duck to build it isn't worth it.** This category was split among five or six clone repos by late October, and XGO-Duck's own daily stars fell from a peak of 268 to 14~20. What's really worth learning is the playbook, to apply to the next hit.

**Who it's for:** people or small teams already doing legged or desktop robotics, with a working RL training pipeline and real-hardware footage to show; if you want to swap servos or add a camera, you have to be willing to spend weeks retraining the policy.

**Who it's not for:** people who haven't touched real hardware or reinforcement learning and expect to get stars by copying an STL file; and anyone hoping to make a "cheaper alternative" in this Microduck wave, since that spot is already taken.

**How to do it:** Don't build the sixth duck. To ride this wave, take the piece they haven't done: local servo adaptation (with a retrained policy included), a vision expansion module, or a pure-simulation beginner tutorial. Even better, write down their playbook for the next "big-company hit, months-long waitlist, closed hardware" product: within two weeks, release a version people can build themselves with fully open hardware, using the new board the platform vendor is currently pushing as the controller.

**How to get users:** Follow its path. Put the hit's name right in the title ("Tired of waiting for X?", "The DIY Alternative to X"); post as the team yourself in maker subreddits like r/arduino and r/robotics, with a working real-robot video; film the assembly tutorial separately and embed it in model pages like Project Hub and MakerWorld; reach out to editors at Hackster and Hackaday directly; pitch the controller vendor's blog and project library. On the day the main act makes news again, your repo's homepage should already be ready.

**When to do it:** To ride this Microduck wave, do it before December's genuine units start shipping in bulk; after that, far fewer people will be "can't wait" buyers. If you want to use this playbook, you don't set the timing. The next hit does.

**What would show you read it wrong:** ① After December's bulk Microduck shipments, the daily stars of xgoduck_hardware or several clone repos go back above 50, showing that "build it yourself" is a standalone demand, not just impatience, and the category can still hold new projects; ② someone ships a local-servo or camera-extension version that gets over 500 stars within a month, showing the byproduct directions are bigger than I estimated; ③ Pollen releases the hardware files, or the projects copying the look speak up, and the "open-source alternative" hook is gone.

## Why LuwuDynamics/xgoduck_hardware (XGO-Duck) took off

> Source: GitHub. Research date 2026-11-06. Sources are noted after each number; "github repo" refers to the github DuckDB on our agent-im server (repo_profile / repo_day).

### One line

XGO-Duck is a version of Pollen Robotics / Hugging Face's **Microduck** robot duck by Wuxi Luwu Intelligent (Luwu Dynamics, the company behind XGO robot dogs and the RIG desktop robot), rebuilt around an "Arduino UNO Q + 15 Feetech 1910 servos + its own expansion board." The **hardware is fully open source** : STL files, PCB schematics and production files, BOM, and assembly manual are all included, plus two libraries for the runtime (walking / getting up / picking up policies and web control) and reinforcement learning training.

It took off not mainly because of the product itself, but because it **rode Microduck's heat, and the timing was right** : genuine units at $399 sold out and face months of waiting, and the hardware isn't open. XGO-Duck caught people who couldn't get a unit with the line "Can't wait? Build your own now." On October 22–23, Jensen Huang brought Microduck on stage at GTC Berlin, the whole Microduck ecosystem's repos surged together, and it also listed a $400 electronics kit that same day; its stars doubled in a week.

### Data

- Built 2026-09-24, today 1,796 stars / 232 forks (fork/star ≈ 13%), 43 days (GitHub repo_profile). Live GitHub API reading: 1,811 stars.

- Curve (github repo_day): 09-29 391 → 10-09 529 → 10-22 701 (this stretch +10~15 per day) → **10-23 857 (+156) → 10-24 1,125 (+268, single-day peak) → 10-25 1,255 → 10-28 1,526** → 11-06 1,796. Last 7 days +192, the 7 days before that +747; daily gains are back to 14~20.

- Same window, the whole ecosystem is up: pollen-robotics/microduck 10-22 9,690 → 10-26 12,065 (single-day peak +818,10-26); Chinese replica repos AI-FanGe/Microduck-build-tutorial and fanhao375/microduck-replica both peaked at 10-28 in a day; LuWu's own xgoduck_runtime_arduino (138 stars) and xgoduck_rl (114 stars) also ticked up (github repo_day). **This wave was mostly driven by outside events, not by the project's own promotion.**

- Never hit GitHub trending (trending_days_any = 0); no HN posts about it in the hackernews dataset (searching duck/xgo/luwu only turns up the Microduck original post, 08-27, 784 points).

Takeaway: plenty of people are building the Microduck-style RL biped duck, but **XGO-Duck is the only version that is a company product + fully open hardware + tied to the official Arduino mainboard + selling its own electronics kit** ; the Chinese personal replica repos have similar star counts, but they lack the Arduino and overseas-media channel.

### How users found it (breakdown)

1. **Riding on the Microduck name (confirmed)** : the repo description, Reddit titles ("Tired of waiting for Microduck?" "We adapted Microduck…"), and the Hackster title ("The DIY Alternative to Microduck") all use Microduck as the hook. Every Microduck news cycle pulls this project up with it; the biggest was 10-22/23's GTC Berlin (the whole ecosystem's repos surged together).

2. **Team posting on Reddit (confirmed)** : the team repeatedly posted on r/arduino and r/robotics identifying as "I'm part of the team" (09-16, 09-24, 09-28/29, 10-14, 10-15), peaking at 320 upvotes.

3. **Own YouTube channel CyberBionic Maker (confirmed)** : intro video 99k views, assembly tutorial 318k views; these videos are also embedded on MakerWorld model pages and Arduino Project Hub.

4. **Arduino official ecosystem (confirmed)** : UNO Q is Arduino's new board for its 2025th year, and Arduino needs flagship projects; Arduino's blog name-checked it (10-08), Project Hub listed it (10-16), and Arduino-linked accounts like ctorobotics also reposted it.

5. **Maker media coverage (confirmed)** : Hackster, Hackaday.io, 3druck, circuit.rocks, futuranet / open-electronics, circuitdigest, IOTTourChina; on the Chinese side there's a Weekly Times interview and a Zhihu post arguing that "on hardware openness, LuWu goes further than Microduck."

6. **MakerWorld (Bambu Lab) model page (listing confirmed; download count not captured)** : 3D printing people come in from here.

7. **Big X accounts: none found** . The local x-radar corpus has no X post mentioning xgo-duck (Microduck itself has big accounts like Thom_Wolf and victormustar); only Hackster's official account 09-26 reposted it.

### Where the money comes from

Open source itself doesn't make money; revenue comes from selling hardware: $20 expansion board, $50 battery + charger, **$400 electronics kit** (listed 10-23, right in time to catch people who couldn't wait for the genuine unit after the GTC wave), plus the full robot kit on Taobao in China (price not retrieved). The official store says it's clearing backlog orders, the basic model is "almost sold out" with batch shipping, which shows the kit is really selling; actual units sold are not public, **unverified** . In effect, a company that used to sell full robots has converted to "open source to attract attention → sell kits": the open-source repo is the ad slot.

### Why it's working

1. **Supply gap** : Microduck sold out fast, with a 4–6 month wait, and its hardware isn't open; people who want to start building right away have no other legitimate option. XGO-Duck fills exactly that "can build today" gap.

2. **Events lifted it** : 10-22/23's GTC Berlin pushed the whole category into the spotlight; in one day it went +156 on 10-23, and 10-24 +268, moving in step with the Microduck original (github dataset).

3. **Complete and working** : it has RL policies (walking, standing up, picking up objects, flipping, kicking a ball, roller skating), web control, 25-page assembly PDF, and a BOM down to every screw. LuWu has been making XGO robot dogs for years, so this isn't a personal weekend replica (the founder said "besides Microduck, we're the only ones who can get it running").

4. **Tied to Arduino UNO Q** : Arduino has an official incentive to promote it (blog, Project Hub), which instantly connects it to the whole Arduino community.

5. **Pitch it as open-source hardware** : that hits Microduck's weak spot, which is that only its software is open. Media will also run with that angle.

### Differentiation

- Versus Microduck: **the hardware is fully open** , you can build it today, and it swaps in an Arduino board (Linux plus STM32, all on one board). It drops the camera and LiDAR (the Chinese kits add back audio/video and ToF). Overall it's not cheaper than the official one (electronics kit $400, plus a separate UNO Q at about $44–59, plus printed parts).

- Versus Chinese personal clones: the company maintains it (PCB revisions, safety notices, a support email), there's a ready-made kit with Arduino backing, and the docs are bilingual Chinese and English, aimed at a global audience.

- Are these differences why it took off? **Partly.** "Fully open + buildable now" is the hook and the media angle, but the traffic itself came from Microduck and the GTC event. Without Microduck, a DIY duck with 15 servos costing $400+ would have a hard time getting to 1,800 stars on its own.

### How many people have seen it

It's circulating in small circles: makers and robotics media have covered it (Hackster, the Arduino official site, 3druck, open-electronics), it sits at Reddit 300-upvote level, and its own YouTube has 300k views. No big X accounts have written about it, HN hasn't featured it, and revenue isn't public. But the "Microduck alternative" lane is crowded: there are at least 3 domestic clone repos with over a thousand stars, plus knockoffs on Xianyu and Taobao.

### Copycats

I didn't find anyone copying XGO-Duck directly. What's grown up around it is community remix work: xgo-duck.com (a third-party beginner assembly guide), roboduckbuild.com (assembly diaries), studiopieters.nl's "micro-Duck" build series, and Chinese clone tutorials on Guijie Tribe. Competing for the same people are a batch of Microduck clone repos (fanhao375, AI-FanGe, kissqy, Flashduck, etc.).

### What others can borrow

- **"Official hit is sold out → open alternative → sell the kit"** : when a big company's hit has a waitlist and its hardware isn't open, a small hardware company with a supply chain can trade openness for attention and then monetize with the kit.

- Put the name of the hit right in the title ("Tired of waiting for X?") and post it yourself in maker channels like Reddit and Hackster, then ask editors to write about it.

- Pick a new board the platform is pushing (UNO Q) and get free exposure from the official blog and project library in return.

- List the kit on the day of the big event to catch the traffic (10-23 kit listing and GTC on the same day).

### Still unclear

- How many kits actually sold, and the price and sales volume of the Taobao complete kit (not retrieved); MakerWorld download and print counts (not retrieved).

- The spike in 10-23 can't be split between the GTC event and the kit listing.

- Would Pollen / HF object to something that basically copies Microduck's shape? The founder said Pollen once reached out, and afterward they stopped the full-robot route. The repo has no license field now, and the legal risk hasn't been verified.

- Daily adds have already fallen back to 14–20. Whether it holds depends on whether people still want to build it themselves once the official Microduck batch ships in December.
