# Third day after the leak: an SD tool author ports DLSS 5 out of games, gets 68 stars in 1,757 days

**What it is** A Windows program you unzip and run. It uses the leaked NVIDIA DLSS 5 neural rendering, plus upscaling, frame generation, HDR and color grading, to batch-process images and videos into a more realistic look.

**Why it took off** Where others stuffed DLSS 5 into games, it was used as a realism filter for people doing AI image generation, rendering and post-production. It cold-started in the author's old community, r/StableDiffusion. Later, frequent releases and steadily growing features kept it going: after the hype faded it still gained a dozen stars a day, with 127k cumulative downloads.

**C** **How you could follow it** Don't build another DLSS 5 tool. Copy the playbook instead: within 72 hours of a new capability leaking or launching, package it for a different group of people, post the first thread in that group's home turf, then ship updates weekly.

Grade C: the window has passed by more than two months. This category now has a first place that ships updates faster, a set of clones, and web versions that borrow the name. The remaining plugin niche is narrow, and the whole approach depends on leaked files NVIDIA can pull at any time. The playbook is worth learning. This project is not worth following. It's circulating in small circles

On Aug 27, 2026, NVIDIA's DLSS 5 neural rendering files leaked out of an early-access game, and the next day every tech outlet ran some version of "modders stuff it into everything." Nearly everyone was shoving it into games. Only one Stable Diffusion tool author shipped a Windows app that used it to process photos and video, on Aug 30. Below: why it surfaced among dozens of DLSS 5 repos, where the stars came from, and what you can still learn from it now that you're seeing it late.

### A 158MB file

On Aug 27, X user @renan_maniero found a 2MB nvngx_dlssnr.dll in an early-access build of NBA 27K158. It was DLSS 5 neural rendering, which NVIDIA had announced at GTC in March but not yet released. Within hours, the RenoDX modding scene used ReShade to inject it into Control. On Aug 28, The Verge, Tom's Hardware, KitGuru and XDA all covered it.

Over the next week, GitHub filled with repos named "DLSS5-something", almost all doing the same thing: injecting this file into more games. DLSS-5-MANAGER, DLSS5oneclick and DLSS5-Feeder were all created between August 29 and 31, and each now has over a thousand stars. DLSS-NR-on-AMD, which makes it run on AMD GPUs, got 3,442 (GitHub, 11-06). At least ten other DLSS 5 repos passed 900 stars in the same period. The term "DLSS 5" alone was worth thousands of stars in those weeks.

Merserk created the repo the evening of Aug 30 and shipped v0.1 the same day. He didn't take the game route.

### It did something else

dlss5-visual-enhancer is a Windows program you unzip and run. Drop in an image or video, run it through DLSS 5 neural rendering, and export a version that looks more real. It began as a local web UI in Python with Gradio, then was fully rewritten in C++/Qt.

It needs an NVIDIA RTX GPU but does not touch games. Its users are people doing AI image generation, architectural rendering and video post-production, many of whom don't game at all. In Sep 14, a V-Ray user posted about it on Chaos's official forum, and the reasoning was blunt: "DLSS 5 is basically a filter, so it works on any image and video, not just games." They ended with "it would be nice to have this filter in V-Ray's frame buffer." The thread had 11-06 views by 511.

This is the main difference from the dozens of other DLSS 5 repos: same leaked file, but it was sold to a different group of people, not to gamers.

### Where the stars came from

**The author's old community.** Merserk had already been building AI image tools: ComfyUI-PiD (133 stars), ComfyUI-Ultimate-Face-Fix, and a portable build of sd-webui-forge. On Sep 1, he posted "DLSS 5 Visual Enhancer - standalone neural rendering for images and video" on r/StableDiffusion. He framed in-game realism as realism for AI-generated images and video, which matched what that community wanted. The v3.0 he shipped that same day has been downloaded 15,299 times, more than any other version. I couldn't find the post's upvote count (Reddit blocked scraping).

**Tutorial creators and news sites picked it up.** Also in Sep 1, Winnougan, an AI tutorial creator with 172 paying Patreon members, published "Standalone DLSS 5 Video & Image Enhancer." On Sep 4, the AI news account @wildmindai introduced it on X. On Sep 11, IndieKings wrote a long piece when it had 736 stars. AlphaSignal covered it on Oct 8. There were 9-02, 9-19 and 10-03 reviews on YouTube, and 10-03's "This Software Is Insane!!" added 33 stars on the day it came out. Each number is small, but together they were enough.

**Search.** The repo name is dlss5-visual-enhancer, and its 12 topics are all things like dlss-5, nvidia-rtx, video-upscaling. During the leak, "DLSS 5" itself was a trending search term.

No sign of paid acquisition or star farming. It was not on HN and did not make GitHub Trending.

The growth pace looks like this (Trendshift and GitHub, 11-06):

| Timeline | star | Average daily gain |
|---|---|---|
| 9-06 | About 575 (estimated backward) | Early September +30 to 40 |
| 9-11 | 736 | |
| 10-16 | 1,372 | From late September +15 to 20 |
| 11-06 | 1,757 | Last 7 days +118, first 7 days +148 |

Downloads tell more than stars: the 30 versions together have been downloaded 126,863 times, over 70 times the star count. v22.0, released on Nov 4, got 3,425 downloads in two days. That means people are actually using it, not just bookmarking it and leaving.

### After the hype faded, what kept it going was consistency.

The fresh-leak buzz was over by September, yet it still gains a dozen or twenty stars a day, because the author keeps shipping: 30 Aug to 4,68 Nov, 30 releases. v4 added frame interpolation, v5 added HDR, v7 let every RTX card run neural rendering, then came RTX Video super-resolution, FSR interpolation, ReShade and LUT color grading, and the latest, v22, adds three super-resolution models the author trained. Every version ships with a detailed changelog.

That turned it from "a DLSS 5 toy" into "a media enhancement suite for RTX cards." The dozen-plus single-purpose tools from the same period (DLSS5-Image-Converter, dlss5-video-player and the like) shipped once and stopped, stuck at a few dozen to two hundred stars.

Users have real complaints too. The most-commented issue is that 9-29 people say the new version is slow: "Before, I used the web version, and converting a 2-minute video on 3090 took 2 to 3 minutes. Now it takes 60 minutes" (18 comments). Others say Windows Defender flags v16 as a trojan, and 3060 and 3080Ti won't run. People who bother to complain like this are actually using it for work.

### Who it's competing with

| Project | Launched | Scale (11-06) | How it differs |
|---|---|---|---|
| perseval-BLR/NeuralScreen | 9-06 | 1,262 star | Applying DLSS 5 live across the whole Windows desktop is real-time viewing; this tool does offline batch processing and exports finished files. |
| Likely7/Veyra-NRVideo | 9-09 | 1,000 star | Real-time enhancement in players and capture cards, aimed at gamers. |
| Blueforcer/ComfyUI-DLSS5-Enhancer | 9-02 | 320 star | A ComfyUI node; during install you have to extract the runtime from Merserk's release package. |
| dlss5-video-player and a dozen other small tools | 8-30 to 9-05 | 3 to 213 stars | Single function, soon abandoned |
| dlss5nvidia.com | Late October | Not verified | Took the name "DLSS 5 Visual Enhancer" for a pay-per-credit web version, and added a repo with the same name to drive traffic |
| Upscayl / Video2X / Topaz | Already around | 51.8k / 22.6k stars / paid | Cross-GPU, uses open-source super-resolution models, and has no "DLSS 5 photorealism" selling point |

It ranks first in the small niche of "processing images and video with DLSS 5," thanks to being earliest, most complete, and most diligent. There's no technical moat: everyone is using the same leaked file. The author guards against that too: the repo ships only part of the source, under a custom license that allows commercial output but forbids redistribution, renaming, and repackaging. Still, the web version borrowed its name anyway.

### How fragile its position is

Two things could knock it out at any time. First, it relies on leaked proprietary NVIDIA files (the latest install package is 863MB, unverified whether the file is bundled in it). NVIDIA can file a DMCA takedown whenever it wants, and as of 11-06 none has been found. Second, official DLSS 5 already shipped in Sep 3 with NBA 2K27, and in November added Hogwarts Legacy. NVIDIA has not yet released a tool for running DLSS 5 on photos and video. If it adds that in RTX Video or Broadcast, this product gets directly replaced.

### If it were you

**Verdict** : C. There is something to learn here, but this one isn't worth it now. The leak was at the end of August, and the window has been closed for over two months. The "DLSS 5 + images/video" category now has a frequently updated leader, a ComfyUI node, two real-time versions with over a thousand stars each, and an SEO-driven web version using the name. The remaining gaps (like plugins for V-Ray, Blender, or DaVinci Resolve) have a very narrow audience, and the whole path rests on a file NVIDIA can pull back at any time.

**What's actually worth copying is the playbook** : within two or three days of new hardware or a new model leaking or launching, repackage something meant for group A as a standalone program for group B, then post the first thread in group B's home turf. Merserk could move this fast because he was already part of group B.

**Who it suits** : people already building tools inside a creator community with their own posting channels (Reddit subs, Discord, Patreon); people who can package things as a "unzip and run" portable build; people who can ship a release every week for a month or two after launch.

**Who it doesn't suit** : anyone who wants to build yet another DLSS 5 image/video tool now (you'd be the tenth or fifteenth); anyone without a community who expects organic GitHub traffic (this project never hit Trending; its stars came from posts and reshares); anyone who wants to stop maintaining after the first release (the others from the same period all stalled below two hundred stars).

**How to do it** : watch for the next new capability that "only works in one scenario," such as only in games, only in one app, or only on one GPU generation, and ask whether a different group of people could use it. If they could, ship the roughest working version within 48 hours, name the repo after the hot keyword, and put a before/after comparison at the top of the README.

**How to get stars** : post the first thread in the target community, with a title that states clearly "what it is + what it's for," following its phrasing: "standalone ... for images and video." Then release weekly, with a clear changelog each time, so downloads bring old users back.

**When to move** : within 72 hours after the next leak or launch. After a week, there will be a dozen copies.

**What would show you misjudged it** : ① NVIDIA issues a DMCA against it or similar repos and takes them down, which would mean this "borrow the leaked file" play is riskier than it looks; ② NVIDIA ships an official DLSS 5 media processing tool and its daily stars drop to single digits, which would mean it was living entirely on what official tools didn't cover; ③ conversely, if by December it still gains more than 15 stars a day and downloads keep climbing, the demand for an "RTX media suite" is lasting, and building the same suite for a different group (such as Mac or AMD users) is worth a look.

## Why Merserk/dlss5-visual-enhancer (Visual Enhancer) could be built

> Research date 2026-11-06. Channel: GitHub. Data comes from our github database (data card), the GitHub API, Trendshift, media, and community pages; sources are cited after each section.

### One line

### 1. What it is

- A portable Windows 11 program (first a local Python + Gradio web UI, later rewritten in C++/Qt/QML) that turns DLSS 5 neural rendering (the author's own "Neuroframe Engine"), DLSS super-resolution and ray reconstruction, RTX Video super-resolution and HDR, DLSS/FSR frame interpolation, built-in AI upscaling models, ReShade, LUT color grading, sharpening, and grain into draggable, reorderable processing cards for batch image and video work. It also ships a command-line VE_CLI.exe, with the interface in 12 languages. (README, GitHub API 2026-11-06)

- Requires an NVIDIA RTX card; frame interpolation requires the 40/50-series. The repo ships only "part of the source," under the author's Merserk Source License: commercial output is allowed, but redistribution and renamed reposting are not. (README)

- Monetization is weak: Patreon only launched 2026-09-11, with a public patron_count of 12 and paid_member of 0, plus single posts sold at $50 / $100 (Patreon public API and post pages, 2026-11-06). Treat it as not earning money.

### 2. Data

- Stars: repo created 8-30 → 9-06 about 575 (backed out from Trendshift's "9-07 to 11-06 rose 1,182") → 9-11 736 (IndieKings' article 9-11) → 10-16 1,372 → 11-06 1,757 (our github database). Forks 140.

- Daily gains (Trendshift): early September +30–40 a day, falling to +15–20 in late September, and staying at +10–28 from October through November. 10-03 had a small spike of +33 (a YouTube review that day, see below). The highest day in our database was +28 on 10-28. Over the last 7 days it added +118; the 7 days before that added +148. It is slowing gradually but has not stopped. It has never made GitHub Trending or the top 25 of Trendshift.

- **Downloads tell the story better than stars** : 30 releases total 126,863 downloads (GitHub API, 2026-11-06). The most downloaded are v3.0 (9-01,15,299), v7.0 (9-05,9,962), v11.0 (9-21,8,640), v14.0 (10-01,8,334) and v18.0 (10-21,8,081). The newest, v20–v22 (10-30 to 11-04), still get 3,000–5,300 downloads each, 70 times its star count. People are really downloading and using it.

- Release cadence: 8-30 releases v0.1,11-04 through v22.0,68 over 30 days. Issues plus PRs total about 160, and the most-commented threads are real-world problems like "new version too slow," "Defender flags it," and "3060/3080Ti won't run."

### 3. Timeline: the platform event was the biggest driver

### 4. Competitors

After the DLSS 5 leak, a wave of related projects appears on GitHub (GitHub search 2026-11-06). They fall into three groups by what they do:

**A. Injecting DLSS 5 into games (adjacent market, much larger, but not the same thing)**

- NODIX-TECH/DLSS-5-MANAGER 1,501 stars (8-30 created); faisalkindi/DLSS5oneclick 1,278 (8-31); jlrouzies-fr/DLSS5-Feeder 1,163 (8-29); Kizzuwatnaa/DLSS5-Autopilot 980; ShyVortex/dlss-unlocked 1,055; danielblnc/DLSS-NR-on-AMD 3,442 (9-03, runs on AMD GPUs); maanHimself/OpenDLSS-NR 1,017 (reimplemented with Vulkan).

- In other words, the phrase "DLSS 5" alone can pull in thousands of GitHub stars, and at least 10 repos crossed 900 in the same period. Merserk isn't the biggest of them, but it ranks first in the "image / video processing" niche.

**B. Using DLSS 5 to process images / video / desktop (direct competitors)**

| Name | Form | Launched | Scale | How Merserk differs |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| perseval-BLR/NeuralScreen | Open source | 09-06 | 1,262 star | Applies DLSS 5 to the whole Windows desktop in real time, so the pitch is "watch it live"; Merserk is offline batch processing that exports finished files |
| Likely7/Veyra-NRVideo | Open source | 09-09 | 1,000 star | Player / capture-card enhancement (tagline "PS5 GTA6 at 120 fps"), leaning toward real-time playback; Merserk leans toward post-production output with a fuller toolchain |
| Blueforcer/ComfyUI-DLSS5-Enhancer | Open source (ComfyUI node) | 09-02 | 320 star | Node-based, and its install script **extracts the runtime** from Merserk's release package, which shows it depends on Merserk's work |
| 2600th/dlss5-video-player | Open source | 09-01 | 213 star | Player with frame-by-frame comparison, single-purpose |
| criso2hd-alt/DLSS5-Image-Converter, mkkkkkk002/DLSS5-Video-Image-Renderer, perseval-BLR/DLSS5-Video-Converter, Daniel9D/dlss5-image (Rust CLI, 8-30) | Open source | 08-30 to 09-05 | 20–61 star | All are single-function small tools that stopped updating after release |
| zeydsama/sd-forge-dlss5, aiplatforms-ru ComfyUI node, SAOG0721/OBS-DLSS5-Neural-Filter, maxaeexe/dlss5-after-effects | Open-source plugins | 09 through October | 5–9 star | Plug into SD WebUI / OBS / AE |
| dlss5nvidia.com "DLSS 5 Visual Enhancer Online" | Web app (credit-based, pay per use) | Late October | Not verified | Borrows Merserk's product name for SEO and runs on its own server; also ships a same-named repo wangsheng1991/dlss5-visual-enhancer and a CLI tool to pull in traffic |

**C. Traditional AI image / video enhancement tools (established alternatives)**

- Upscayl 51.8k stars (2022), Video2X 22.6k (2018), chaiNNer 6.1k (2021), Flowframes 2.1k (2020, RIFE frame interpolation); paid Topaz Video AI / Photo AI. These are open models like ESRGAN and RIFE, with no "DLSS 5 realism" selling point.

- Big-vendor features: NVIDIA RTX Video Super Resolution / HDR only work in real time inside browsers and players and can't export; official DLSS 5 is only used in supported games like NBA 2K27 and Hogwarts Legacy, and only on RTX 50. NVIDIA offers no official tool for running DLSS 5 on photos or video. That gap is why Merserk can hold its ground.

### 5. Where users came from (growth tactics)

1. **Search traffic from the platform event (confirmed)** : within two days of the leak, major tech outlets covered it, and "DLSS 5" became a hot search term. The repo is literally named dlss5-visual-enhancer, and its 12 topics are all terms like dlss-5 and nvidia-rtx, so it shows up in GitHub search and Google.

2. **The author's home community, r/StableDiffusion (confirmed)** : Merserk was already building AI art tools like ComfyUI-PiD (133 stars), ComfyUI-Ultimate-Face-Fix, BeatSync-Engine (78 stars), and portable sd-webui-forge packages. 9-01 posted to r/StableDiffusion, framing "DLSS 5 from games" as "realism enhancement for AI-generated images and video", which fits what SD users want (the post body couldn't be read at the time because Reddit blocked scraping).

3. **Tutorial creators and news accounts reposting (confirmed, but modest reach)** : Winnougan posted a tutorial on Patreon (9-01, 172 patrons); @wildmindai introduced it on X (9-04); several YouTube reviews (9-02, 9-19, 10-03); IndieKings, hysenlabs, AlphaSignal and repolode, aggregator and news sites, all wrote about it.

4. **Spread into the rendering / archviz community (confirmed)** : people recommended and discussed it on the Chaos (V-Ray) forum and the Twinmotion Facebook group. This crowd is professional users who run renders through it to boost realism.

5. **Repeat visits from frequent releases (inferred)** : 68 days, 30 versions, each with a detailed changelog. Returning users came back each release (1,000–8,000 downloads per version), which kept it in front of people.

6. No signs of paid acquisition, star farming, or account networks; not on HN; no posts about it in our X corpus.

### 6. Why it took off

1. **Caught the window** : the DLL 8-27 leak, then 8-28 media coverage landed together, and 8-30 it shipped its repo the same day. It was among the first "DLSS 5 image / video processing" tools (one of only a few 3-star Rust CLI tools that day).

2. **Changed the use case, and the user base got much bigger** : everyone else was injecting into games, while it treated DLSS 5 as a "realism filter" for people doing AI art, archviz and video editing. Those people show up even if they never play games, and they are exactly r/StableDiffusion's core users.

3. **The author had an existing community and packaging experience** : they had made several SD / ComfyUI portable packages and knew Windows users want an exe that works after unzipping. Blueforcer's ComfyUI node uses its runtime directly.

4. **Fast iteration, steadily broadening features** : v4 added DLSS frame interpolation, v5 added HDR, v7 made it run on all RTX cards, and later it added RTX Video super resolution, FSR frame interpolation, ReShade, LUTs and a custom super-resolution model. Once the novelty of the leak faded, it had grown from a "DLSS 5 toy" into an "RTX media enhancement suite", which is why it kept gaining 15–20 stars a day after late September.

5. **Feels like a finished product** : it has a website with before/after comparisons, a wiki, 12 languages, a CLI and presets. Compared with similar repos that are just a Python script, it looks like working software, which makes it more likely to get starred.

### 7. Differentiation

- Compared with A (game injection): it processes **any image and video and exports finished files** without touching games. This is the main reason it took off, because it reached the AI art and post-production crowd.

- Compared with B (other media processors): it is **offline batch processing with a full pipeline** (neural rendering + upscaling + interpolation + HDR + color grading + export encoding), while NeuralScreen and Veyra do real-time playback and the whole desktop, and other small tools each do one thing. Its lead comes from being first, most complete and most active. The technology itself has no moat, since the DLL is a shared leaked file.

- Compared with C (Upscayl / Topaz): its pitch is the "real DLSS 5" brand and the realism effect, plus NVIDIA's own SDK suite (RTX VSR, Optical Flow, NIS).

- Bottom line: the differentiation ("take game tech and apply it to media" plus "one-stop portable program") is why it ranks first among dozens of DLSS 5 repos in the image / video category. But the fact that the whole niche took off rests fundamentally on the platform event of the leak.

### 8. What to borrow

- **When new hardware or a new model leaks or launches, turn it into a standalone app for a different audience within 48 hours** : take something made for players (group A), repackage it for AI art, post-production and rendering users (group B), then post in their home turf (r/StableDiffusion).

- Name the repo and topics after the hot keyword (dlss5-…) to catch search traffic from day one.

- After the cold start, **release often and write clear changelogs** so downloads keep climbing; gradually expand a single feature into a full suite, which keeps people around after the hype fades.

- Release only part of the source with a custom license to prevent direct repackaging, but expect web clones to still use your name for SEO (dlss5nvidia.com is an example).

### 9. How many people know, and whether others are copying

- Visibility: **circulating in small circles** . It has coverage from AlphaSignal, IndieKings and a few YouTube reviews, all AI / open-source news sites. The DLSS 5 leak itself got big-outlet coverage from The Verge and Tom's Hardware, but no major outlet wrote about this app on its own. No big account on our X corpus has picked it up, it is not on Trending, and revenue is undisclosed and nearly nonexistent (0 paying Patreon members).

- Copycats: dlss5nvidia.com borrows the name "DLSS 5 Visual Enhancer" for a pay-per-credit web version, plus a same-named GitHub repo to drive traffic. Coolaid003/dlss5-visual-enhancer is a mirror of the early Gradio version. maxaeexe/dlss5-after-effects also calls its AE plugin "DLSS 5 Visual Enhancer". The dozen-odd small repos in tier B appeared around the same time as similar tools, so they don't count as copying it.

- Risk: it uses leaked proprietary NVIDIA DLLs, and NVIDIA could issue a DMCA takedown at any time. Official DLSS 5 is already live in games, but NVIDIA has no media tool yet. If NVIDIA fills that gap itself (say, an RTX Video / Broadcast-style DLSS 5 media tool), this gets directly replaced.

### 10. Still unclear

- I couldn't read how many upvotes or comments the r/StableDiffusion post got (Reddit blocks scraping). How many stars 8-30 to 9-06 gained per day can only be inferred from the GitHub stargazers API, which returns 404.

- I didn't verify whether the current version still distributes leaked DLLs or leaves users to source them, and I found no record of an NVIDIA DMCA.

- I don't know how much traffic or revenue dlss5nvidia.com gets.

- I can't separate out how many downloads come from the same older users re-downloading with each release.
