# A big fish watching your balance: the bookkeeping widget from DSH's open-source launch on day five. How it got 6,900 stars

**What it is** DeepSeek Harness (DSH)'s always-on whale widget in the bottom-right corner of the web UI. It shows your DeepSeek balance, what you've spent today, how much each conversation round cost, and whether it's currently peak or off-peak pricing.

**Why it took off** In DSH's first open-source week, paying users were burning through balance every day. The widget put the number that sat in the settings page onto a moving whale with community memes like "big fish" and "Liang Wenfeng off-peak." The author's Bilibili videos totaled about 1.18M views, and a star-sorted plugin leaderboard plus fast iteration kept it at number one.

**C** **How you could follow it** Don't build another DSH balance plugin. Take its approach to the next platform that opens up plugins: in week one, pick a number users check every day, turn it into an always-on widget with community memes and a mascot, publish a demo video the day the repo goes up, write the README for agents, and take external PRs within the first two days.

Grade C: the playbook is clear and worth studying. But DSH's balance, usage, and pet slots are already crowded. It holds the top spot, no second-mover has passed 100 stars, and interest is fading, so you can't get stars in this specific niche right now. Chatter in small circles

Five days after DeepSeek's official Agent runtime, DeepSeek Harness (DSH), went open source, someone put a whale girl in the bottom-right corner of its web UI to track how much money is left on your DeepSeek account and how much you've spent today. Balance-checking plugins had already been around for a dozen-plus entries, and whale desktop pets existed too. This one combined both, and the author personally demoed it on Bilibili. The result: the top spot in its category, with 6,911 stars, about 30k npm downloads over the last 417 days, and the next-largest balance plugin sitting at just over 7 thousand.

### A 1-minute, 43-second video

On 2026 Aug 18 morning at 10:32, Bilibili creator "Yuejiang" posted a 1-minute, 43-second video titled "DeepSeek Harness big fish - balance mini widget." Forty minutes later, the MeteorNOX/DeepSeek-Balance-Whale-Widget repo went up on GitHub. Three days later (8-21) came another video, "Dsh big fish balance mini widget v0.2.5 is out!" at 2 minutes 40 seconds, with a GitHub link in the description.

As of 11-06, this v0.2.5 video has about 618k views. The launch video had about 279k, and 9-30's "step-by-step install tutorial" has about 285k (per the Bilibili page, 11-06). Those three plus one v0.3.0 release video sit in the same playlist, and the top three combined reach about 1.18M views. We can't confirm that 月匠 is the author. There's no backlink to them on GitHub. But the videos link the repo, and the release dates and version numbers line up, so it's most likely an inference.

"Big fish" wasn't the author's name for it. DeepSeek's logo is a whale, and the Chinese community has long called it the big fish. DeepSeek also has peak/off-peak pricing, so people joked with founder Liang Wenfeng's name, calling peak "Liang Wenfeng" and off-peak "Liang Wengu." The widget was built on these memes from day one.

### What it is

A standard DSH plugin. Once installed, it stays in the bottom-right corner of the DSH web UI: a bouncy, draggable whale that snaps to the edges, with a speech bubble that reads:

- **Balance** : refreshes every 60 seconds, and the number rolls when it changes;

- **Spent today** : when the balance drops it's logged as spending, top-ups are recorded separately, and no token is needed;

- **What this round cost** : when each conversation round ends, a bubble shows the amount calculated from the tokens the model actually used;

- **Peak or off-peak now** : weekdays 9–12 and 14–18 are peak, everything else is idle, and from 8-23 on weekends it's off-peak all day. One countdown style is literally called "Liang Wenfeng off-peak."

It later added low-balance alerts, a daily budget, a visual bubble editor, support for balances and quotas from 34 providers, and the ability to read local Codex logs. Installation is one command: `dsh plugin --profile web add dsh-whale-widget`. The repo description says "just ask your dsh to install it." The README covers the npm package name, installing from GitHub, and desktop pitfalls in detail, written for an agent to read so it installs correctly the first time.

### Why this one and not the dozen others

DSH went open source on Aug 13 and blew up the same day. One article says it passed 10,000 stars in under two hours and 50,000 in 12 hours (cnblogs). By 11-06 the official repo had 274k stars. Nearly all of the first users were paying DeepSeek API customers running agents all day and burning through balance, so "how much is left, how much did I spend today, is it expensive right now" was something everyone checked every day.

So from Aug 13 to 18, a dozen-plus balance plugins piled out: crazywoola/dsh-balance, Ghost011118/dsh-balance-meter, TwotwoPiggy/dsh-balance... Each launched one to five days before the little whale and had between 6 and 27 stars by 11-06. They did the same job. The difference was where the number lived. Those plugins put it in a settings page or sidebar that users had to go click into. The little whale put it on a moving, bubble-popping whale that stays in the corner of the screen.

That one difference produced two things:

1. **It spreads.** Nobody reposts a number screenshot, but a bouncy big fish makes a good video. The Bilibili video with 618k views was carried by exactly that character.

2. **It sticks.** Pure desktop pets (like dsh-pet or whale-girl) get boring after a few days. This one pops up with what each round cost every time, so people use it daily and don't uninstall it.

| Peers | Launched | 11-06 scale | What's different |
|---|---|---|---|
| DSH built-in "Settings → Account & balance" | Built in | All users | Only in the settings page, not always visible, no bookkeeping. The little whale instead borrows DSH's login to fetch the balance. |
| yxxbc/dsh-balance-plugin | 08-15 | 64 stars, 2,852 npm downloads per month | Pure tool UI, no character |
| Ychris12138/dsh-usage-stats | 08-14 | 188 stars, 7,306 npm downloads per month | Usage dashboard, has to be opened on purpose |
| PC2005-cloud/dsh-pet | 08-14 | 5,759 stars, 455k npm downloads per month | Pure companionship, ignores money. Top of the "desktop pet" slot. |
| vlln/whale-girl, dsh-whale-musume | 08-10 / 08-15 | 405 / 207 stars | Whale-girl raising sim, ignores money |
| Joyi-code/DeepSeekMonitorWindows | 06-06 | 393 stars | Standalone Windows program, not connected to DSH sessions, so it can't calculate per-round cost |

It isn't the first balance plugin or the first whale girl. It's the only one that's both money-aware and cute, and the only cross-over of the two categories to pass a few thousand stars.

### Where users come from

**The Bilibili videos did the cold start.** A video went out forty minutes before the repo was created, and each major release got another. When the install process got more complicated, a step-by-step guide was added.

**New DSH users are the fuel.** People who install DSH go looking for plugins: the dsh-plugin topic on GitHub, awesome-dsh-plugin, dsh-market, deepseek.club, dsh.plus, and various Top lists. Most of these rank by stars, so the more stars a plugin has, the higher it ranks, and the higher it ranks, the more people install it. In a third-party DSH ranking from late September, it placed #10 across the whole ecosystem by 7-day star growth.

**It grew alongside DSH with no single spike.** npm downloads were about 13k in August, about 90k in September, and about 377k in October. The daily peak of 34.4k came on 10-28, the day DSH shipped a new release. Several repos in the ecosystem hit their own single-day highs at the same time, and it gained 186 stars that day (npm's official download API, GitHub, 11-06). npm download counts include auto-updates and reinstalls, so they aren't a user count, but compared with its peers the gap is two orders of magnitude.

**The community jumped in early.** From day three (8-20) on, external PRs and issues came in at a dozen-plus a day. Someone reworked it into a standard DSH plugin package, someone submitted Windows and Tauri versions, someone added an easter egg where the whale shows "Liang Wengu / Liang Wenfeng" depending on the time, and someone set up npm auto-publishing in CI. On 8-23, someone opened an issue titled "It's Liang Wengu on weekends now, will the author change it?" The same day, another person drew three images suggesting a full bowl of rice next to the whale when balance is high and an empty bowl when it's nearly used up. User fangbm alone submitted a string of fixes. By 11-06, 9 people had submitted code, and 108 issues were open.

What I couldn't find: paid promotion, big accounts reposting on X, or English-language media or dedicated HN/Reddit threads. Zhihu, CSDN, and X have many "must-install DSH plugins" roundups, where it usually gets a passing mention as the whale girl. One X post even said it's "not really useful."

### How the copycats are doing

219 forks, and a chain of remixes: louke6572/dsh-Dfy added QQ bridging and 106 animation segments (89 stars); aklnaaw/dsh-xiaoke-widget built a Claude-personified "Xiaoke" with its description stating "remixed from this project" (54 stars); comreade-123 made a standalone desktop version (61 stars); there are also skin versions, a rice-bowl version, Android, and a Mac port. One issue comment reads: "I just had the big whale modify it into a Mac desktop version itself." The author team split the Codex version out into Yang-huai406/Codex-Whale-Public (64 stars).

No copycat has passed 100 stars. In an ecosystem ranked by stars, the first project to claim a slot tends to get forked and skinned by late arrivals rather than rivaled head-on. The more remixes it gets, the more it looks like the canonical version.

### Is it still hot?

Cooling off. Stars up 390 over the last 7 days, versus 874 in the 7 days before that; 11-05 npm daily downloads have dropped back to 11k, a third of the 10-28 peak (GitHub, npm, 11-06). Last commit to the repo was on 10-11. The DSH ecosystem already has thousands of plugins, and the balance, usage, and desktop-pet slots are all crowded. It's well known in the DSH Chinese community, but almost nobody outside that circle has heard of it.

### If it were you

**The verdict** : don't build another DSH balance widget. That slot is taken. What's worth taking is the method, applied to the next platform that just opened.

- **Who it suits** : developers who watch for new platforms and can ship something in the first week, when the platform is open-source or has an open plugin system. Ideally you can cut a one- or two-minute demo video yourself and have a Bilibili or Douyin account, even with a small following.

- **Who it doesn't suit** : people who only want to write a tool and won't do characters or content. Checking a balance is something a dozen-plus projects already do, and each one sits at 6 to 27 stars. The difference is all in the fish and the few videos.

- **How to do it** : once a new platform takes off, pick something every user looks at daily (money, quota, progress, status). Don't make it a number on a settings page. Make it a persistent, animated presence on the interface, carrying the platform community's own jokes and mascot. Iterate fast: it shipped 38 versions in two and a half months, while similar projects mostly stalled around v0.1. Write the README for agents: a line saying "let your agent install it," plus exact commands and pitfall notes.

- **How to get users** : post a demo video the day the repo goes up, and another with each major release. If the install is complicated, add a tutorial. List the repo in every plugin marketplace and awesome list the platform has. In the first two days, merge outside PRs and credit people who suggest Easter eggs, so early users become maintainers and remixers.

- **When to get in** : the first week or two after the platform opens. The little whale launched on day 5, and balance plugins launched a day or two earlier never took off. That shows timing isn't about being first, but wait a few weeks more and the top of the charts is gone.

- **What would mean you read it wrong** : if you ship a widget and a video in the platform's first week, and within two weeks your stars aren't clearly ahead of other plugins in the same slot, and no one opens PRs or remixes it, then the mascot and the jokes didn't land with that community, or the number was never something people check daily. Change the need. Don't keep adding features.

## MeteorNOX/DeepSeek-Balance-Whale-Widget (the DSH little-whale bookkeeping widget): why it took off

> Research date 2026-11-06. Channel: github. Data comes from our GitHub database (repo_profile / repo_day), the GitHub API, the npm download API, Jina search, and page text.

### Bottom line

DeepSeek's official agent runtime, DeepSeek Harness (DSH), was open-sourced on 2026-08-13 and blew up the same day. Five days later the author put a "big fat fish / whale-girl" in the bottom-right corner of the DSH web UI. It shows the DeepSeek balance, today's usage, and per-turn spend. The launch video went up the same day on the author's Bilibili account "月匠", and the three videos total about 1.18M views. It turned a utility that more than a dozen projects already offered (checking the balance) into a community joke with a mascot. Then high-frequency iteration and open PRs caught the new users DSH brought in. It became the de facto standard for the balance/bookkeeping slot: about 417k npm downloads in the last 30 days, and the highest of any balance plugin is 7k.

### 1. What it is

- A standard DSH bundle plugin that sits in the bottom-right corner of the web UI once installed. The whale shows a speech bubble with the DeepSeek API balance (refreshed every 60 seconds), "today's usage" (estimated from balance drops, no token needed), and per-turn spend calculated from real usage. It also has peak/off-peak pricing countdowns, balance alerts, and a daily budget. It later grew into a multi-vendor balance/quota panel with 34 vendor templates, and it can read local Codex logs. (Source: repo README.)

- Install: `dsh plugin --profile web add dsh-whale-widget`. The repo description literally says "it's best to just tell your dsh to install it," meaning let the agent read the README and install it itself.

- As of 2026-11-06:6911–6952 stars, 219 forks, 108 open issues, and 38 releases (v0.1.0 released on 08-18, currently v0.4.2), the npm package `dsh-whale-widget` has 31 versions. Contributors: the author with 59 commits, plus 8 others including fangbm and renoschubert.

### 2. The competitive landscape (look at this first)

The DSH ecosystem is itself a boom: the official repo deepseek-ai/deepseek-harness has 274k stars (created 08-13, still up 7988 in the last 7 days), and awesome-dsh-plugin lists thousands of plugins. The balance/usage/desktop-pet slots are crowded:

| Competitors | Type | Launched | Scale (2026-11-06) | How it differs |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| DSH official "Settings → Account & Balance" | Big-company features | DSH built-in (source: packages/client/ui-settings-account) | All DSH users | Only in the settings page, not persistent, no bookkeeping. The little whale in turn borrows this login session to fetch the balance. |
| yxxbc/dsh-balance-plugin | Open-source DSH plugins | 2026-08-15 | 64 stars, 2852 npm downloads per month | Pure tool UI, no character |
| crazywoola/dsh-balance, Ghost011118/dsh-balance-meter, TwotwoPiggy/dsh-balance, jelly-000/dsh-balance-monitor, huanyuLv/dsh-balance-tide, and others | Open-source DSH plugins | 2026-08-13~08-18 | 6–27 stars each | Launched 1–5 days before the little whale, but each is just a number on the settings page or sidebar |
| Ychris12138/dsh-usage-stats, Aisland-SJL/dsh-usage | Open-source DSH plugin (usage dashboard) | 08-14 / 08-16 | 188 / 143 stars, 7306 / 696 npm downloads per month | Leans toward a data dashboard that you have to open on purpose |
| PC2005-cloud/dsh-pet | Open-source DSH desktop pet | 2026-08-14 | 5759 stars, 455k npm downloads per month | Pure companionship, no bookkeeping. The winner in the desktop-pet slot. |
| vlln/whale-girl, Sutera-Diffusus/dsh-whale-musume | Open-source DSH whale-girl desktop pet | 08-10 / 08-15 | 405 / 207 star | Raising-game gameplay, doesn't track money |
| Joyi-code/DeepSeekMonitorWindows | Open-source Windows desktop app | 2026-06-06 | 393 star | Standalone desktop app, not connected to DSH sessions |
| SummerXaa-Z/tokenmeter-mac, legend80s/deepseek-balance-statusline, and others | Menu bar / status bar | 2026-05~06 | 6–63 star | Outside DSH |

Conclusion: **it is neither the first balance plugin nor the first whale desktop pet.** It is the only one that combines "watching the money" with "desktop pet" as a persistent interface element, and the only cross-category project in both slots to reach several thousand stars.

### 3. Growth data

- Stars: our per-day data goes from 10-16 at 4893 to 6911 at 11-06, with daily gains of 50–190 and a single-day high of +186 on 10-28. That same day, several DSH ecosystem repos (dsh-desktop, awesome-dsh-plugin, dsh-market, dsh-wallpaper-engine, qq-bridge) also hit their own single-day peaks, matching DSH v0.2.1-rc.4 / v0.2.2-alpha.2, released on 10-28. In the last 7 days it gained +390, versus +874 in the 7 days before, so it's cooling. The data card cites Trendshift at +5138 over 61 days. In a cached snapshot of a third-party DSH ranking (zp-home/dsh-recommend, when it had about 3539 stars, roughly late September), it ranked 10 across the ecosystem by stars gained in 7 days.

- Actual installs (npm downloads for `dsh-whale-widget`, api.npmjs.org): about 13k in August, about 90k in September, and about 377k in October. The daily peak was 34.4k (10-28), and it has since fallen back to 11k (11-05). In the last 30 days it was about 417k, while over the same period dsh-pet had 455k, dsh-whale-musume 8233, @ychris12138/dsh-usage-stats 7306, whale-girl 6190, and dsh-balance-plugin 2852. Note: npm downloads include automatic plugin updates and reinstalls, so they aren't a user count. Still, the comparison within the same category holds, and the gap is two orders of magnitude.

- Curve shape: no single-day spike. It climbs in step with the DSH user base. npm downloads step up at 9-29/9-30 (after DSH v0.2.0-rc shipped and dsh-our-free-model went viral) and again on 10-27/28.

### 4. Where users come from (growth tactics)

1. **The author's own Bilibili account, "月匠", posted videos on launch day (confirmed).** "DeepSeek Harness Dashi Fish Balance Widget" went up on 2026-08-18 10:32 with about 279k views. "Dsh Dashi Fish Balance Widget v0.2.5 Is Out!" went up on 08-21 with about 618k views, and its description linked the GitHub repo. "Little Whale Balance Widget Beginner Install Tutorial" went up on 09-30 with about 285k views. All three are in the same "DSH small plugin" collection, share the same avatar, and their publish dates line up with the repo creation (08-18 11:13 Beijing time) and the v0.2.5 release. Together they've logged about 1.18M views, the main engine of its cold start.

2. **Platform traffic from the DSH ecosystem (confirmed).** DSH went viral the day it open-sourced: one cnblogs post says it passed 10,000 stars in under two hours and hit 50k in 12 hours. New DSH users go looking for plugins, and the entry points include the GitHub `dsh-plugin` topic, awesome-dsh-plugin, dsh-market, dsh-plugin.org, deepseek.club, dsh.plus, dsh.so, findthe.tools, and assorted Top10/Top100 lists. It has a listing on all of them. Most of these lists sort by stars, so more stars means higher placement, which feeds back on itself.

3. **"Must-install plugin" posts and reposts (partly confirmed).** Zhihu, CSDN, cnblogs, and long X posts (@criscxuan, @yupi996) carry many DSH plugin roundups. In the handful we checked, it's mentioned in passing as a "whale girl / desktop pet" type, and one even calls it "not really useful" (criscxuan). We found no article devoted to it. There's also one YouTube Shorts repost.

4. **Lets the agent install it (confirmed, effect not quantified).** The description reads "just ask your dsh agent to install it," and the README spells out the npm name, the github: install path, and desktop-side gotchas in detail, so a DSH agent can read it and install correctly the first time.

5. **Community contributions keep users around (confirmed).** In the first two days after launch (08-20~08-22), more than a dozen external PRs and issues came in: a Windows build, a Tauri build, npm auto-publish CI, a multi-currency bug fix, a "梁文峰/梁文谷" easter egg, a "eat free rice" bowl, and a tip-jar recharge feature. fangbm alone submitted a string of fixes and peak/off-peak billing PRs. As of November there are 108 open issues in total. #48 has a user suggesting it be listed on dsh-market for more exposure, and #60 is a notice that it was picked up by DSH Meme Hub.

6. **What we didn't find:** paid promotion, X accounts with large followings reposting it (the local x-radar corpus returns nothing relevant), or dedicated HN/Reddit threads.

### 5. Why it took off

- **Timing:** After DSH open-sourced in 08-13, the first wave of users were paying DeepSeek API customers running agents all day and burning through their balance. DeepSeek also has peak/off-peak pricing, and starting 08-23 weekends are off-peak all day, so "is it expensive right now, and how much have I spent today?" was a real question. It launched 08-18, right in the ecosystem's first week.

- **Format:** Over a dozen balance plugins came out around the same time, and most put the number on a settings page or sidebar. This one puts the number on an always-visible, animated, bouncy "大肥鱼" you can drag around and that makes sounds. The DeepSeek community already calls its mascot "大肥鱼" and plays with "梁文峰谷"-style memes, so screenshots and videos travel naturally. The Bilibili video with 618k views runs on the cute character and the "QQ bounce."

- **Useful, so it sticks:** Unlike pure desktop pets (dsh-pet, whale-girl), it pops up the cost of each turn after every conversation round, which makes it something you check every day. Once installed, people don't uninstall it, and auto-updates keep feeding npm downloads.

- **Fast iteration:** 38 releases and 31 npm versions. In about two and a half months it went from showing a balance to showing balances/quotas for 34 vendors, Codex log stats, and a visual bubble editor. Most competitors stalled around v0.1.

- **Winner takes all:** The lists sort by stars, so once it pulled ahead it kept the first slot in the "balance" category. Later entrants mostly forked or remixed it rather than building something from scratch.

### 6. Differentiation

Its differentiator is **"a money-watching tool plus a mascot companion, combined, living on screen all the time,"** plus a "balance-diff bookkeeping" feature that needs no API key (a drop in balance counts as spend, and top-ups are logged separately). That's the main reason it took off. On features, it wasn't the first balance plugin, and early on it wasn't the strongest (dashboard-style tools had more). On character, it wasn't the first whale girl. Only it was useful, cute, and easy to film at the same time, and the author demonstrated exactly that on Bilibili. The later multi-vendor templates and Codex stats are moat-building features added after it gained traction; they didn't cause the traction.

### 7. How many people see it (visibility)

It has wide circulation inside the Chinese DSH community: roughly 1.18M views on Bilibili, listings on every plugin marketplace and list, over 400k monthly npm downloads, and a string of remixes. Outside the DSH circle, almost nobody knows about it: we found no X account writing about it and no English media coverage. It's free and open source, so no revenue.

### 8. Copycats

- louke6572/dsh-Dfy (dsh-whale-widget-plus, 89 stars, 08-25): builds on it, adding a QQ bridge and 106-stage animation.

- aklnaaw/dsh-xiaoke-widget (54 stars, 09-26): a humanized Claude version called "小克"; the description states it is "a remix of this project."

- Witherwithwinter/...-Bowl (35 stars), GululuCopa/deepseek-whale-balance-widget (29 stars), and fiven577/dsh-whale-widget-sankou (a three-mouth skin): reskins and tweaks.

- comreade-123/DeepSeek-Whale-widget-desktop (61 stars): a standalone desktop version. There are also PRs/issues for Windows, Tauri, Android, and macOS ports (#2, #4, #11, #50, #51).

- Yang-huai406/Codex-Whale-Public (64 stars, 10-05): the author's team split out a Codex version themselves; bianbian-666/Codex-dafeiyu is a Codex "大肥鱼" desktop pet.

- 219 forks in total. None of the followers has more than 100 stars, which fits winner-takes-all.

### 9. What to borrow

1. In the first week of a new platform's boom, pick a must-have that every user checks daily (here, how much you've spent), wrap it in the platform community's own memes and mascot, and build it as a persistent on-screen element rather than a settings page.

2. Have the author demo it on Bilibili or short video yourself. Post the first video the same day as the repo is created, post one for each major release, and add a step-by-step tutorial when the install is complex. Three videos are enough to carry a cold start.

3. Write the README for agents to read: one line saying "ask your agent to install it," plus exact commands and gotcha notes.

4. Take external PRs within the first two days to turn early users into maintainers and remixers. The more remixes there are, the more the original reads as the canonical one.

5. In an ecosystem where lists sort by stars, the first-place holder of a category usually gets forked rather than competed with head-on. Holding the top slot early is the moat.

### 10. Still unclear

- "月匠" is the author MeteorNOX personally. This is an inference: the video descriptions link the repo, and the publish timing and version cadence line up, but the GitHub profile has no backlink.

- We can't get the GitHub stargazer breakdown (the API returns 404), so we can't split the star sources day by day from August to October. The curve before 10-16 comes only from Trendshift and third-party list snapshots.

- We don't know how much of the npm downloads come from auto-updates and CI, and the true number of active users is unknown.

- Bilibili view counts are the page values scraped via Jina, not checked against an official API. We found nothing on Xiaohongshu or Douyin.

- We haven't verified whether DSH officially recommended it in dsh-market or the desktop app.
