# A "practice" Tauri project that picked up 1,569 stars and 968 forks in 3 days: HGhub caught the heat of the Huangguo short-drama wave and a post on linux.do

**What it is** A free, open-source third-party client for "Huangguo short dramas" (an AI-generated adult short-drama platform). It runs on Windows, macOS and Android, with no ads, and pulls data directly from the official site.

**Why it blew up** Huangguo has been breaking out since this summer, and fake official sites are everywhere. HGhub is the first full-featured client built specifically for it. 11-04 The author posted it on linux.do under open-source promotion (446 likes), and the thread was full of "star+fork so it doesn't get taken down" replies, with +474 stars in a single day.

**C** **How you could follow it** Don't build another Huangguo client. Apply the playbook to the next platform that just broke out and has a hard-to-use official client (ideally with compliant content): build a complete multi-platform client, post it formally on linux.do under open-source promotion, and make the first screen of the README name the only official channel and call out the fake versions.

Grade C: the playbook is clear and the scale is decent, but the spot is already held by a predecessor with 1,500 stars. The content is adult, and survival depends on upstream APIs and rights holders, so the repo could be blocked or taken down at any time and the stars won't stick. There's something to learn, but copying it directly isn't worth it. Chatter in small circles

HGhub is an open-source third-party client for Huangguo, the AI-generated adult short-drama platform that surfaced this summer. The author says he only wanted to try Tauri 2 on Android. In 3 days the repo picked up 1,569 stars and 968 forks, and three releases have been downloaded 14k times. Here's where the stars came from, why the fork count is so unusually high, who it's competing with, and what you can copy to get your own open-source project this kind of traction, and what you shouldn't.

### A post that opens with "No more talk, just enjoy it"

On 2026 Nov 4 06:02 (UTC), linux.do user Wep-56 posted in the "搞七捻三" section with the title "[Open Source] [NSFW] Third-party client for a certain yellow-fruit short drama app, supports Windows and Android", tagged open source promotion, NSFW, film & TV, and short drama. The first paragraph of the post:

> No need for more words, just enjoy it. Full features, stable playback. I built it to try out Tauri2 Android development and couldn't think of anything else to make, so I went with a Yellow Fruit client.

Right after, a bolded line with an exclamation mark: "There are lots of fake HG official sites and fake clients already circulating, and there have been cases of phones being remotely controlled and money stolen!"

As of 11-06, the post had 446 likes, 186 replies and 6,937 views (linux.do, 11-06). The replies were almost all one pattern: "Seriously starred + forked", "star+fork so it doesn't get taken down", "Forked seriously, must carefully review the code for security issues."

The repo was created on Nov 3. 11-04 shipped v1.0.0 and v1.0.1 the same day. In between, the author helped someone in the thread debug a proxy issue on Windows (you need TUN mode). 11-05 shipped v1.1.0. Daily GitHub stars: 11-05 was 618,11-06, 1,092 was 474 (+11-06 in one day). By the evening of 1,569 it had 968 stars and 11-06 forks (GitHub).

### What it is

A client for watching Huangguo short dramas, on Windows, macOS and Android. Rust + Tauri 2 shell, React frontend, hls.js for playback. Vertical full-screen playback, a Fluent-style UI, and a built-in "line" switcher that checks reachability and switches to another line when playback fails. It stores no video itself and pulls data directly from Huangguo's official API. Cover images are encrypted and decrypted on the Rust side. Video streams are relayed through a local proxy to get around WebView cross-origin and hotlink protection. The README states it does no signature reverse-engineering and no downloading.

Huangguo doesn't require a membership, and the author charges nothing. From v1.1.0 the license was changed to PolyForm Noncommercial, which prohibits any commercial use.

### Where the stars came from: one topic, one post, one habit

**The topic is hot.** Huangguo borrows its name from Douyin's Hongguo short dramas. Its content is AI-generated "remixed" adult short dramas. On Aug 6, someone posted on linux.do: "While you're all still watching Hongguo short dramas, huangguo short dramas quietly appeared." On Sep 3, the iOS and Android apps launched. On Sep 24, NetEase's NetEase Hao published "'Huangguo short dramas' blow up overseas, AI short dramas that go big on explicit content." A Threads post saying "Huangguo has already replaced Hongguo" got 880k views. At the same time, fake official sites and "cracked versions" were everywhere, which is why the author's post shouts "beware of fake clients" on the very first screen.

**The only source is linux.do.** On X over the past 30 days, searches for "HGhub" and "黄果短剧" each returned 0 results. No media outlet has covered it; it's only been auto-indexed by aggregator sites like hotrepo.ai and trendshift. The repo was less than 60 days old and never reached GitHub Trending. linux.do's "open-source promotion" tag is a formal channel: posters must declare the project is fully open source, link to the community, and post any AI-generated introduction as a screenshot. Through this channel, a post is read as a project recommendation rather than an ad.

**"Star + fork so it doesn't get taken down."** This is why the fork count is unusually high. HGhub's fork-to-star ratio is about 0.62. For newly created GitHub projects, the median ratio is about 11%, while comparable Hongguo clients sit at only 4–15%. People aren't forking to change code. They're forking to save a copy in case the repo gets taken down, and to make a public statement. Checking 20 fork accounts, registration dates range from 2009 to 2026. Most are older accounts with several public repos, and some match user IDs from linux.do replies. Nothing suggests inflated numbers.

**People are actually using it.** The installers for the three releases were downloaded roughly 14,100 times in total: v1.0.0 3,576, v1.0.1 1,886, v1.1.0 8,655 (GitHub Releases, 11-06). About 60% or more are Android APKs, the rest Windows. The newest version has the most downloads, suggesting the first users are following updates. This shows more than stars do that it's not just being looked at.

### Who it's competing with

| Project | What it does | Scale | HGhub vs. the alternatives |
|---|---|---|---|
| Huangguo's official app / website | Official | Not verified | Need to find the real site; ads; no desktop app |
| The guoapp family (zhoufuweigg/guoapp, Xanerix "Zhenguo Jian") | Flutter multi-source aggregator: Hongguo, Huangguo, Huangdou | 1,684 / 891 stars | Aggregates several sources, runs on a Telegram group; HGhub only does Huangguo, so the experience is more focused |
| gybeyond1/Veyra | Hongguo + Huangguo aggregator | 56 stars | Needs a self-hosted backend |
| DRDRDRRDDRDR/huangguo-web | Cloudflare Worker web page | 46 stars | Has to be self-deployed |
| colin4k/HuangguoAPP-for-Andriod | Android client | 27 stars | Android only, low polish |
| Hongguo clients (hongguo-desktop-releases, hongguo-player, etc.) | Connects to the compliant Hongguo | 5,416 / 2,676 / 878 stars | Different platforms; grows steadily by tens to over a hundred stars a day through Bilibili and YouTube tutorials |
| hichuv/HGhub | Old HGhub version with card-key / VIP paywall | 3 stars | Named in the author's README as a "malicious modified version" |

A few things worth noting:

- **No dedicated Huangguo client had passed 60 stars before it.** Those projects weren't badly built or unusable; they simply were never formally promoted in a large community. HGhub's edge is, first, that it was promoted, and second, that it's complete on all three platforms, so it could handle the traffic.

- **The Hongguo client lane is already crowded** , with the top projects at 5,000+ stars, and they grow in a completely different way: a long tail from video tutorials, steady daily growth. HGhub is one post's spike.

- **The bar is very low.** A commenter in the thread said "I also vibe-coded one with AI for my friends"; within two days of a fork, someone had added a paid card-key.

### The risk is written into its own README

The README's "Terms of Use" contains this line: don't publicly distribute the API, direct links, or decryption methods, because "if upstream gets banned, nobody can use it anymore." In other words, the project's life is entirely in Huangguo's hands. Change a signature or an API and the client is dead. The content is adult short drama, and the copyright isn't the author's, so the repo could be reported and taken down at any time. The frantic forking shows that everyone knows this.

How long the heat lasts is also unclear. A repo that took off from a single community post typically cools off within about a week (inference). 11-06 evening it was still climbing, about 470 more stars than earlier that day.

### If it were you

**In one line** : what you can learn is the playbook: "a platform that just broke out, has a poor official experience and lots of fakes; be the first to build a complete multi-platform third-party client, then formally post it on linux.do under open-source promotion." But the Huangguo spot is already taken, and projects like this can be cut off by upstream or rights holders at any time. Even if you earn the stars, they won't stick.

**Who it's for** : developers who can build a client good enough for daily use with Tauri, Flutter or similar cross-platform tools in a day or two; people with a nose for newly emerging content platforms who are willing to stick around communities like linux.do long term and understand their rules.

**Who it's not for** : anyone who wants a project that builds stars and a track record over time. A repo that gets blocked or taken down is useless on a résumé. Anyone who minds their GitHub account being tied to adult or gray-area content. Anyone thinking of building another Huangguo client, since there's already a predecessor with 1,500+ stars.

**How to do it** , from most to least reliable:

1. **Copy only the playbook, swap the topic** : find the next platform that just broke out, where the official client is hard to use or there's no desktop app and fake sites are rampant. Ideally the content is compliant, so the repo won't vanish overnight. Hongguo clients have been able to climb steadily to 5,000 stars precisely because the content is compliant and tutorials can drive long-term growth.

2. **Copy the README approach** : open the first screen with "the only official repo, the only download channel is GitHub Releases," call out the fake forks by name, and turn users' security anxiety into trust in you. This works on any project where someone might take your code, modify it, and sell it.

3. **Copy the posting rhythm** : reply to bugs in the thread the day you post, and ship the fix the same day, two versions a day. The first wave of users follows the updates, and downloads keep climbing.

**How to get users** : use the open-source promotion tag on linux.do and follow its format. Title it with what it is and which platforms it supports. The first paragraph of the body says how it works, the second covers security. Then answer questions in the thread yourself. Don't count on X, Hacker News, or GitHub trending for this kind of project; it gets almost no traction there.

**When to get in early** : this is the play for switching to a new topic. The window is the first one or two months after a platform breaks out. Huangguo appeared in August, and HGhub arrived in November and was still the first solid client, which shows these gaps can stay open longer than you'd expect. But once someone has promoted in a big community, the second entrant rarely gets the same traffic.

**How you'd know you misread it** : (1) A week or two later HGhub is still gaining hundreds of stars a day, and it has sources beyond linux.do. That means it isn't a one-off spike, and the Huangguo client slot is worth more than it looks. (2) The reverse: the repo gets taken down, or Huangguo changes its API and the client breaks widely. Then stars don't stick for this kind of project, so stay away. (3) Someone uses the same playbook for a compliant platform's client and gets over a thousand stars from a single linux.do post. That means switching topics works.

## Minireel/HGhub: third-party client for Huangguo short dramas, why it got 3 stars in 1500 days

### One line

HGhub is a third-party client for the "Huangguo" short-drama platform, written in Tauri 2 + React, supporting Windows / macOS / Android. Huangguo emerged in 2026 8–September as an AI-generated adult (18+) short-drama platform. It took off not because of the tech, but because three things stacked up: first, the topic, since Huangguo is breaking out and is NSFW; second, a linux.do post that was both "open-source promotion" and NSFW; third, the community habit of "star + fork to prevent takedown." That's why the fork-to-star ratio hits about 62%, more than 5 times similar repos. It has almost no real competition in the "dedicated Huangguo client" niche, and similar open-source projects each have fewer than 60 stars. But this differentiation only caught the buzz; it isn't what created it.

### Data

- Our GitHub repo data (repo_day): 2026-11-05 has 618 stars / 532 forks, 11-06 has 1092 stars / 862 forks, +474 in a single day.

- GitHub API checked live (2026-11-06 evening): **1563 stars / 968 forks** . Repo created 2026-11-03 14:04 UTC; this org (Minireel) registered 2026-09-14; the other repo minireel-download-station has 60 stars.

- Release download counts (GitHub API, same day), about **14,000 downloads** across three versions:
    - v1.0.0(11-04):3,572
    - v1.0.1(11-04):1,886
    - v1.1.0(11-05):8,576
    - Of these, the Android APK accounts for about 9,000 (about 64%), and the Windows exe / zip about 5,000. This is a better signal of real use than the star count.

- Fork/star ratio about 0.62. The median fork/star ratio for new repos in our database is about 11%, while comparable Hongguo clients sit at only 4–15%.

- Star-farming check: we sampled 20 accounts from the forkers at intervals. Account creation dates spread over 2009–2026 years, mostly older accounts with several public repos. Some match linux.do reply IDs (e.g. plokij74). We saw no sign of inflated traffic. The stargazers endpoint returns 404 for this repo, so we can't pull the starring users directly (cause unverified).

### 1. Why it took off

#### The topic is hot

Huangguo is an AI-generated adult "remixed short-drama" platform, and its name piggybacks on Douyin's "Hongguo short dramas":

- 2026-08-06: linux.do's first post "While you were still watching Hongguo short dramas, huangguo short dramas quietly appeared," 57 likes / 3767 views.

- 2026-09-03: iOS / Android app launch (promotion post on Instagram).

- 2026-09-24: NetEase Hao article "'Huangguo short dramas' blew up overseas, an AI short drama that went global with mature content."

- A Threads post saying "Huangguo has replaced Hongguo" got 883K views.

There are also lots of fake official sites and "cracked" sites riding the traffic (sites.google.com/view/huangguoapp, etc.). The post author specifically warned that people who installed fake clients had their phones remotely controlled and lost money. So "open source, auditable code, data from the real official site" is itself the selling point.

#### The single trigger: linux.do

2026-11-04 06:02 (UTC), user Wep-56 posted on linux.do "[Open Source] [NSFW] A certain yellow fruit short-drama third-party client, supports Windows and Android." Tags: open-source promotion / NSFW / film & TV / short drama.

- As of 11-06: **446 likes, 186 replies, 6,937 views** (linux.do API).

- Almost all the replies are "serious star + fork," "star+fork, to prevent it from being taken down," and "seriously forked, must carefully review the code for security issues."

- This joke directly explains the unusually high fork ratio: forks are treated as backups against DMCA takedowns and as a statement of support, not something people take to build on.

We found no other source beyond linux.do:

- x-radar searches over the last 30 days for "HGhub" and "Huangguo short drama" each return 0 posts.

- Only auto-aggregation sites like hotrepo.ai and trendshift index it.

- The repo is under 60 days old, too new to make GitHub trending.

#### Why people use it and stick around

- The official Huangguo app needs a VPN, you have to find the real official site, and it has ads. HGhub gives you a clean desktop + Android client with a vertical immersive layout and Fluent styling, with built-in line switching and reachability checks.

- The author responds fast. On 11-04 they located and fixed the Windows proxy issue the same day it was reported (requiring TUN mode), and shipped v1.0.0 and v1.0.1,11-05 within one day, then v1.1.0. v1.1.0 has the most downloads, which shows the first wave of users follows the updates.

- The project has no monetization. Nothing to pay for, and nothing you're asked to pay.

### 2. Competitors

| Product | Where | Launched | Scale | How HGhub differs |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Huangguo's official app / website | iOS, Android, web | 2026-08 web, 09-03 app | Unverified; Threads discussion 883K views | Official has ads and you have to find the real site; HGhub has a desktop client, no ads, and is open source |
| colin4k/HuangguoAPP-for-Andriod | Open source | 2026-10-04 | 27 stars | Android only, low polish |
| DRDRDRRDDRDR/huangguo-web | Open source (Cloudflare Worker web) | 2026-10-01 | 46 stars | Web parsing site, you deploy it yourself |
| jinshengchan/huangguo-fongmi | Open source (film & TV TV source) | 2026-09-29 | 28 stars | Only a source config for FongMi / film & TV TV use |
| luckyf1oat/hg-player | Open source | 2026-09-05 | 20 stars | CF Workers player |
| waitforcopilot/huangguoTV | Open source | 2026-10-18 | 8 stars | Focused on TV / Electron |
| gybeyond1/Veyra | Open source | 2026-10-12 | 56 stars | Multi-source aggregation for Hongguo and Huangguo, needs a self-hosted backend / Docker |
| guoapp series (zhoufuweigg/guoapp, Xanerix/guoapp "Zhenguo Jian") | Open source (Flutter + Go) | 2026-09-26 / 10-02 | 1,684 / 891 stars (GitHub repo 11-06) | Aggregates multiple sources (Hongguo, Huangguo, Huangdou) and runs a TG group; HGhub only does Huangguo, so the experience is more focused |
| Hongguo clients (waligoraamodio288-rgb/hongguo-desktop-releases, yangbin1322/hongguo-player, jackotom/hongguo-drama) | Open source / installers only | 2026-09 through October | 5,416 / 2,676 / 878 stars | It connects to Hongguo (compliant content), not Huangguo; it gains 40–160 stars a day, mostly from a long tail of Bilibili / YouTube tutorials |
| Alos21750/UAV-Downloader | Open source | 2026-04 | 451 stars | Bulk downloader for adult sites, including Huangguo; HGhub explicitly does not do downloads |
| wlx219/huangguo-vip-app | Open source | 2026-10-24 | 4 stars | "VIP ad-free version" |

Conclusion:

- The "third-party Hongguo client" niche is already crowded, with the top one at 5k+ stars.

- No "dedicated Huangguo client" had passed 60 stars before. HGhub was the first to ship a complete three-platform experience and formally promote it in a large community.

- Big companies won't build this; the subject matter is adult content.

### 3. Growth tactics broken down

| Channel | Evidence | Verification status |
|---|---|---|
| linux.do open-source promo thread (NSFW section) | topic/3120256:446 likes / 186 replies / 6,937 views; lots of replies just saying “star + fork” | Confirmed |
| The community's "star+fork against takedown" habit | Reply quote: "star+fork, so it doesn't get taken down"; forks/stars 0.62 | Confirmed |
| Search demand from people riding the Huangguo buzz, plus the need to tell real from fake using a sense of safety | Both the post and the README stress that fake clients steal money, name malicious modified builds, and say the only official download is GitHub Releases | Confirmed (it's a tactic; the amount of traffic it brought is unverified) |
| X / TikTok / Xiaohongshu | x-radar: 30 days, 0 posts; one reply says "I saw this (Huangguo) being run on X a couple of days ago," which was Huangguo's official operation, not HGhub | No evidence |
| GitHub trending | Repo created <60 days ago, not yet listed | N/A |
| Aggregator sites (hotrepo.ai, trendshift) | Has listing pages | Confirmed, but passive indexing |

### 4. How visible it is and how much copycatting there is

- Visibility: it's circulating in small circles. There's one source, linux.do, plus automatic aggregator sites; no media has covered it, and X search turns up nothing.

- Copycats:
    - hichuv/HGhub: 11-04 06:47 forked from an older version and added license-key / VIP paywall unlocking, 3 stars. The author names it in the README.
    - 968 forks are still pushing a few commits (chenmaoxin, ice-a, RebotTan, etc., 11-06), possibly still modifying.
    - A reply says "I also vibe-coded one for friends," showing the barrier to entry is low.

### 5. What's the differentiation, and is it why it took off?

- Differentiation:
    - Focused on Huangguo alone, but built as a "native-feel" three-platform client (Tauri, small bundle; vertical immersive view; HLS proxy; cover decryption).
    - Explicitly doesn't do signature reverse-engineering or downloads, and is anti-commercialization (switched to the PolyForm Noncommercial license from v1.1.0).
    - Sells "safe, open source, the only official channel" as its selling point.

- Is this the reason? Only partly. The decisive factors are the subject (hot, NSFW, appeals to curiosity) × linux.do distribution, plus the fork-against-takedown habit. Similar open-source Huangguo clients aren't poorly made; they just never got a formal push in a big community, and all stalled at 20–60 stars. Building a complete experience is what let downloads (about 14k) and version iteration keep up with the traffic.

### 6. What to borrow

- On a content platform that just broke out, where the official experience is poor (needs a VPN, lots of ads, a flood of fake official sites), be the first to build a complete multi-platform third-party client, then post formally in a community with a fixed promotion channel (the open-source promo tag like linux.do). That can get you a thousand stars in a few days.

- Write "anti-scam, the only official channel, and named malicious forks" into the README, turning security anxiety into trust.

- The risks are obvious: upstream can block the API or change signatures at any time, and the content touches adult material and copyright, so the project could be hit by a DMCA or have its repo taken down at any moment. Star counts therefore don't mean sustainability.

- The monetization route has already been tested by license-key modified builds like hichuv's (paywall unlocking), but that is a gray practice the author explicitly prohibits, so copying it isn't recommended.

### 7. Still unclear

- Why the stargazers API returns 404 (whether GitHub has restricted it), so there's no way to sample the starring accounts.

- The user base of the Huangguo platform itself, and who runs it (there are multiple "official" domains online, and it's hard to tell which are real).

- How long the heat lasts: repos driven by a single linux.do thread usually cool off after about a week. 11-06 late, 1563 stars more than the earlier snapshot the same day, up about 470, and still climbing.

- Whether there are plans for a DMCA or an upstream block.
