# Mistgate: one memory comparison table plus a ready-made Chinese doc gained 84 stars in a day

**What it is** A self-hosted VPN panel for people who set up proxies for family and friends: add nodes by entering an IP in the browser, one subscription link per person. It only supports Hysteria2, VLESS REALITY, and AmneziaWG, built from two Go programs plus SQLite, no Docker needed.

**Why it took off** Blocking in Russia and Iran escalated, and AmneziaWG3.1 had just come out, with the most censorship-resistant protocols on by default. A README table comparing "idle 16–20 MiB vs. Remnawave 426–454 MiB" became the line Chinese bloggers repeated when sharing it, and the ready-made Chinese docs caught this wave of traffic.

**C** **How you could follow this** Don't build yet another proxy panel. If you do, fill the gaps it leaves (older protocols, reachability inside China and Iran). The more useful things to learn are two moves: put a quantified comparison table with stated test conditions in the README, and prepare docs in the target community's language ahead of time, then find that community's bloggers and Telegram channels to get it shared.

Grade C: the star-gaining playbook is clear and can be transplanted to other projects, but this niche has a dozen old panels with tens of thousands of stars each, plus "a one-click script is enough" alternatives, so the ceiling is low. Even with Chinese KOLs sharing it, it has only 250 stars after a month or so, not worth copying as is. Circulating in small circles

Mistgate is a self-hosted VPN management panel for people who set up proxies for family and friends. The repo was created in Oct 1, and by Nov 6 it had about 250 stars. Growth was slow for the first month, then on Nov 3 it gained 84 stars in one day, because two Chinese channels shared it. Below: what it is, what happened that day, how crowded this niche is, and what you can learn from it if you want to build a project that gets stars the same way.

### "I run it on my six servers for my family and friends"

The README has this line from the author, limeflash (Daniyar Ennanov, listed as based in Turkey). It basically sums up the project: it's not for airport operators. It's for the person who has a few VPSes and needs their family or a small group to be able to connect.

That person's daily worries are very concrete: a node gets blocked and needs replacing, a new machine has to be set up one by one, the grandparents' phones need links, and someone has to know when the connection breaks at night. Mistgate moves all of that into the browser:

- **Add a node** : enter the server IP and root password (or the panel's own SSH key) in the browser. The panel checks the server, opens the ports, and installs a signed node program on its own.

- **One link per person** : Clash-family clients (FlClash, Clash Verge Rev, etc.) get all three protocols from a single subscription.

- **It keeps watch for you** : every 5 minutes it connects to each server the way a client would. Each node runs 17 self-checks and proposes 7 fixes, which only run when you confirm. Problems trigger Telegram alerts.

- **Ways around blocks** : when some network can't reach a server, traffic can be relayed through another node. It can also test from inside a country or carrier whether a server is reachable (the README admits most probe sources only work from Russia).

It supports only three protocols, all of them currently the hardest to block: Hysteria2, VLESS REALITY, and AmneziaWG (default 3.1 version). VMess, Trojan, and Shadowsocks are not supported. The whole thing is two static Go binaries plus SQLite, with no Docker and no separate database service. The panel also has built-in MCP, so an AI agent can read your node fleet and propose changes, and risky changes need your approval in the dashboard.

The README states plainly that the code was written by an AI coding agent, and the author reviews it, decides what gets merged, and handles releases. In 36 days he alone made 862 commits and cut 81 version tags, roughly two releases a day (GitHub, 11-06).

### Nov 2: two Chinese channels shared the /zh page

| Date | Cumulative stars | What happened |
|---|---|---|
| 10-28 | 91 | Built up slowly over the first 27 days |
| 11-02 | 110 | Averaging +4 per day over these 5 days |
| 11-03 | 194 | Single day +84, the day after the Chinese channel shares |
| 11-04 | 219 | Aftermath |
| 11-06 | 244 | Fell back to about +11 per day |

(GitHub stars, daily, as of 11-06)

Morning of Nov 2 (8:41), the Telegram channel "扫地僧º笔记" shared a link with just one line, `https://mistgate.app/zh/`, with a preview of the Chinese docs homepage: "Mistgate is a self-hosted panel for managing your own VPN servers, and the people who use them with you." The same day, Chinese tech blogger dingyi (ding.one, active on X, Threads, and Telegram) also posted:

> Found this self-hosted proxy panel really good. It looks better than Remnawave, which I had installed before, and uses less memory.

He also attached the /zh link. That day it gained 6 forks. The next day, 字节笔记本 published a long post titled "An AI-written panel holding your root passwords: the early shape of Mistgate's ops tooling." When it was written, the repo had 218 stars. On NodeSeek someone also asked, "Do you need to install a panel to set up a proxy... has anyone used Mistgate?"

Two details in this jump are worth noting.

**First, the reason dingyi recommended it was already written in the README.** The README has a comparison table that spells out idle memory: Mistgate 16–20 MiB, 3x-ui 68–74 MiB, PasarGuard 262–265 MiB, Remnawave 426–454 MiB. Below the table it gives the test machine specs and method, and it even has a page on "where Mistgate is slower." The blogger paraphrased that table: "uses less memory than Remnawave."

**Second, the traffic landed on a ready-made Chinese page.** Both channels shared mistgate.app/zh. The project is by a Turkish author, and its docs come in English, Russian, and Chinese, with the README also available in Persian and Turkish. Chinese readers could go through the whole thing without reading English.

I couldn't trace where the 10 stars from 91 came from. By late October a few Chinese accounts were forking it and Russian users were opening issues, so my guess is that small Russian and Chinese Telegram circles spread it sporadically. Reddit, Hacker News, and X barely have it.

### Why now

Through 2026, Russia's TSPU and Iran's blocking kept escalating. As VLESS got blocked more often, Hysteria2 became the alternative. AmneziaWG 3.1 shipped from late October to early November, with the tagline "bypassing AI-based blocking" (amnezia.org blog). Mistgate's defaults are AWG 3.1 plus Hysteria2 plus REALITY, and it includes built-in TSPU probing. Its protocol choices fit exactly the months when circumvention was hardest.

### Who it's competing with

This space is crowded, and more than a dozen open-source panels are bigger:

| Project | Launched | Scale (stars) | How Mistgate differs |
|---|---|---|---|
| 3x-ui | 2023-02 | 49k, +525 in the last 7 days | Long-established single-server panel with full protocol coverage. Mistgate is one panel managing many machines, and supports only anti-block protocols |
| One-click scripts (233boy/sing-box, mack-a/v2ray-agent, etc.) | From ¥2019 | 5K–22K | No panel, no per-person subscriptions or health checks, but many self-hosters think that's enough |
| Hiddify-Manager | 2022-09 | 9.5k | Mainstay in the Iranian scene, requires MySQL plus Redis |
| Marzban / PasarGuard | 2022-11 / 2025-08 | 7.5k / 2.8k | Multi-user panel aimed at running an airport (paid proxy service) |
| Remnawave | 2025-01 | 5.3k, +42 in the last 7 days | Requires Docker plus PostgreSQL plus Redis, about 440 MiB idle |
| s-ui | 2024-02 | 10k | Single-server panel built on sing-box |
| Blitz / h-ui | 2024 | 1.1k / 2.5k | Hysteria2 only |
| CELERITY-panel | 2025-11 | 225 | The closest match: it also installs nodes automatically over SSH and has MCP. It has no AmneziaWG and no Chinese docs |
| mikan | 2026-09-28 | 128 | A newer panel at the same time, installs with one command |

(GitHub,11-06)

The biggest rival is actually "don't install a panel." Under the NodeSeek post, the top ten replies include "3x", "No need, a one-click script does it", "panels take up config space", "Not installing", "Why bother with a panel for this", "Not needed." One person also casually posted a multi-machine management panel they had just written.

Mistgate occupies a very narrow niche: a few machines, a few dozen people, no desire to run ops every day. It has gained +138 stars in the last 7 days, ranking just behind 3x-ui among panels and outpacing Remnawave, PasarGuard, and Blitz. Still, it has only 250 stars in total, which is small for this category. I haven't seen anyone copying it yet; all 16 forks are personal forks of projects with 0 stars.

### What it still gets wrong

- **Protocol gaps.** VMess, Trojan, Shadowsocks, and TUIC are unsupported. The 字节笔记本 post points this out too. Family members on older clients will have trouble switching.

- **New, and releasing twice a day.** The README itself says that before 1.0, the API, storage settings, and node protocols may all change, and there's no tested automatic upgrade path from older versions. For something you give to family, that pace will make some people hesitate.

- **Russia-leaning.** Most of the in-country reachability probe data sources only work from Russia, so users in China or Iran only get part of the functionality.

- **Handing root passwords to a panel written by AI.** The Chinese community's first reaction is suspicion, which is exactly what the 字节笔记本 headline says. The author is answering with signed releases, AGENTS.md, and public review rules, but that trust takes time to build.

- **Nobody knows how many people use it.** Stars are not installs, and there's no public data on how many machines it's deployed on.

### If it were you

**One-line verdict:** building another proxy panel is not worth it. The category has more than a dozen large repos and a low ceiling. Mistgate has Chinese KOL backing and still only got 250 stars in over a month. What's worth taking is its two moves for earning stars: a quantified comparison table, and target-language docs ready ahead of time. Both can be used on other projects.

**Who it's for:** developers already in a small-language tech community (Chinese, Russian, Persian) who host services for people around them, or people with an existing project who want to learn how to get a KOL to pass it along with a single mention.

**Who it's not for:** people hoping to reach a thousand stars with "yet another panel"; people who don't want long-term maintenance or won't fix blocks right away; people with legal concerns about this topic.

**How to do it:**

1. If you do enter this niche, fill in what Mistgate hasn't done well: add Trojan, Shadowsocks, and TUIC so older clients still work, or build dedicated in-country reachability probing for China and Iran, since Mistgate's probing mainly covers Russia.

2. Or pick a different category and use the same positioning approach: in a field where the big repos are all competing on features, narrow down to a small scenario like "a few machines, a few dozen people, low ops" and go head-to-head with the big repos on a measurable metric (memory, dependency count, startup time).

3. Put a comparison table in the README, with test conditions attached to the numbers, and write an honest page on "where we're slower." The table itself becomes the promotional material.

**How to earn stars:** first build out the target community's language docs, and make the Chinese page a standalone link that can be shared directly. Then find the bloggers and Telegram channels in that community who recommend tools. On the Chinese side, that means types like dingyi, 扫地僧º笔记, and NodeSeek. Once they share it, the jump shows up the next day. The English-speaking Reddit and HN show little interest in this category, so don't spend effort there.

**Timing:** blocking is escalating now, new protocols just shipped, and people are switching their setups, so this window probably has a few months left. Once the mainstream panels add AmneziaWG 3.1 and SSH node installs, lightweight alone won't be enough of a selling point.

**Signs you've misread it:** after a Chinese or Russian channel shares it, daily gains stay under a few dozen stars; or within a version or two, 3x-ui or Remnawave close the gap with multi-node SSH installs and low memory. Either outcome means this niche has no room left, and the approach should move to another category.

| Remnawave | Open source | 2025-01 | 5.3k stars, +42 over the last 7 days | Remnawave requires Docker plus PostgreSQL plus Redis, about 440 MiB idle. Mistgate needs no Docker and sits around 20 MiB. |
| Marzban / PasarGuard | Open source | 2022-11 / 2025-08 | 7.5k / 2.8k star | Both of these target multi-user airport operations. Mistgate targets family and friends, with the focus on node health and reachability. |
| Hiddify-Manager | Open source | 2022-09 | 9.5k star | Depends on MySQL plus Redis, mainly used in the Iranian scene. Mistgate is lighter and focuses on Russia and China. |
| s-ui | Open source | 2024-02 | 10k stars | A single-server panel built on sing-box, with no SSH node installs. |
| Blitz / h-ui | Open source | 2024 | 1.1k / 2.5k star | Hysteria2 only. Mistgate manages all three protocols. |
| CELERITY-panel | Open source | 2025-11 | 225 star | The closest match: it also has automatic SSH node installs and MCP. Mistgate adds AmneziaWG, client-perspective checks, in-country reachability probing, and Chinese docs. |

## Mistgate/mistgate: why it got about 250 stars in 36 days

### One line

Mistgate is a self-hosted management panel for "mini VPNs". It's for the "middlemen / family admins" who set up proxies for family, friends and small communities: add nodes by entering an IP and root password in the browser, give each person a subscription link, and it only supports the currently most censorship-resistant protocols: Hysteria2, VLESS REALITY and AmneziaWG. The whole thing is two Go static binaries plus SQLite, no Docker, and the idle panel uses 16–20 MiB of memory. It also ships a built-in MCP so AI agents can read the node fleet and draft change plans. The author is limeflash (Daniyar Ennanov, listed as based in Turkey), who has made 862 commits alone; the README says it was written with an AI coding agent and reviewed by him.

### Data

- Repo created 2026-10-01. v0.1.0 was tagged by 10-03. As of 11-06 there have been 81 tags (v0.1.79, plus v0.1.80-dev.1), roughly two releases a day (GitHub API).

- Stars: 10-28 91 → 11-02 110 (averaging +4 a day over these 5 days) → **11-03 194 (+84)** → 11-06 244; live GitHub check 251. Forks: 15–16 (our GitHub database repo_day / GitHub API).

- +138 over the last 7 days. Among repos in our database whose descriptions mention hysteria / amneziawg / vless, it ranks #5. Among panel projects, only 3x-ui (+525) grew faster. It outgrew Remnawave (+42), PasarGuard and Blitz (GitHub database repo_profile, 2026-11-06).

- The only external contributors are tageecc (a Chinese user who opened PRs such as adding mainland China to the country options) and zk0xch (a Russian user who opened issue #36 about AdGuard Home as a decoy site). Everything else is the author.

- GitHub's stargazers endpoint returns 404 for this repo, so the individual accounts that starred it can't be inspected and I can't rule out star farming. The curve shows a quiet period followed by one jump that lines up with external posts, which looks like organic growth.

### Growth channels: where users came from

1. **Chinese KOLs and Telegram channel reposts. The jump on 11-03 came from these (timing confirmed).**
    - dingyi (ding.one, a Chinese tech blogger active on X, Threads and Telegram) 11-02 posted: "Found this self-hosted proxy panel, looks better than the Remnawave I installed before, and it uses less memory", linking to mistgate.app/zh (transcribed from bittide.aicompass.dev; Threads @dingyi; todayrss "ding.one's column" 11-02).
    - The Telegram channel "扫地僧º笔记" 11-02 08:41 reposted mistgate.app/zh (cn.todayrss.com/t/V5Ms63VmS0).
    - A second wave of spread followed: a long-form post on ByteNote, "AI-written panel holds the root password: Mistgate's ops prototype" (11-03, 218 stars at the time); a NodeSeek thread, "Pros, should I install a panel to set up a proxy... has anyone used Mistgate?" (11-02); and jizhiku's aggregator also reposted it. 11-02 That day it added 6 new forks (GitHub forks API), which lines up with this.
    - The surge was absorbed because the author had already prepared **Simplified Chinese docs** (mistgate.app/zh, README.zh.md). Chinese users who clicked through landed on a ready-made Chinese site and didn't need to read the English README.

2. **Long-tail SEO and aggregator indexing from multilingual docs (confirmed)** : the docs site is in English, Russian and Chinese, and the README also has Persian and Turkish versions. Exa-indexed Russian docs pages are dated from 10-06. The Vietnamese blog Hạnh Tinker (11-03), the Russian MCP directory SkillFoxx (11-03), RepoCloud and gitdiagram all index it.

3. **The first 91 stars in October (source unverified)** : between 10-27 and 10-30 several Chinese accounts had already forked it (kbsonlong, kadidalax, kwannz), and there were Russian-language issues. That suggests sporadic spread in Chinese and Russian circles before dingyi, but I couldn't find the specific post. No results on Reddit r/selfhosted, HN, or X (x-radar search for mistgate returned nothing).

4. No ads, no big self-authored post, and no HN or Product Hunt launch seen.

### Competitors

| Product | Where | Launched | Scale | How Mistgate differs from the others |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 3x-ui (MHSanaei) | Open source | 2023-02 | 49k stars, +525 over the last 7 days | 3x-ui is an established single-server, multi-protocol panel with full protocol coverage (VMess/Trojan/SS). Mistgate runs one panel over many nodes, installs nodes over SSH from the browser, and keeps only the censorship-resistant protocols. |
| Remnawave | Open source | 2025-01 | 5.3k stars, +42 over the last 7 days | Remnawave needs Docker plus PostgreSQL plus Redis and idles at 426–454 MiB. Mistgate needs no Docker and idles at 16–20 MiB. dingyi's recommendation was exactly a comparison with Remnawave. |
| Marzban / PasarGuard | Open source | 2022-11 / 2025-08 | 7.5k / 2.8k star | Both are multi-user panels aimed at selling subscriptions. Mistgate targets "family and friends" and puts node health and reachability checks front and center. |
| Hiddify-Manager | Open source | 2022-09 | 9.5k star | Popular in the Iranian scene, depends on MySQL + Redis. Mistgate is lighter. |
| s-ui (alireza0) | Open source | 2024-02 | 10k stars | Single-server panel built on sing-box |
| Blitz / h-ui | Open source | 2024 | 1.1k / 2.5k star | Both only do Hysteria2. Mistgate manages all three protocols. |
| CELERITY-panel | Open source | 2025-11 | 225 star | The closest competitor: it also does Hysteria2 + VLESS, can auto-install nodes over SSH, and has MCP. The differences are that Mistgate adds AmneziaWG, runs detection from the client's point of view, and has mainland-China reachability probing and Chinese docs. |
| mikan (Miroshka000) | Open source | 2026-09-28 | 128 star | A newer panel from the same period with a one-line installer; smaller in scope than Mistgate. |
| Amnezia self-hosted / Amnezia-Web-Panel | Open source / client | From ¥2020 | 16k / 527 stars | Manages only AmneziaWG and Xray, with no unified one-link-per-person subscription. |
| One-click scripts (233boy/sing-box, mack-a/v2ray-agent, argosbx). | Open source | From ¥2019 | 5k–22k stars | Many people on NodeSeek say "for personal use you don't need a panel, just run a one-click script." This is its biggest substitute. |

Verdict: the space is crowded. There are a dozen-plus large repos, so competition isn't scarce. Mistgate's entry point is the "small scale, many nodes, low ops" niche.

### Why it made the charts

1. **It caught a specific time window** : through 2026, Russia's TSPU and Iran's blocking kept escalating. AmneziaWG 3.1 shipped in late October / early November, marketed as "bypassing AI-based blocking" (see the amnezia.org blog). After VLESS got blocked, Hysteria2 became the alternative. Mistgate defaults to AWG 3.1 plus Hysteria2 plus REALITY, and adds TSPU probing and reachability tests from inside China, right at the hardest step today.

2. **A comparison table that quantifies "light"** : the README directly compares 3x-ui, Remnawave, Hiddify, PasarGuard and s-ui, listing idle memory of 16–20 MiB against Remnawave's 426–454 MiB. dingyi's recommendation was literally "looks better than Remnawave, uses less memory." So the table itself became the talking point.

3. **Lowers the ops bar for "setting up VPNs for others"** : enter an IP and root password in the browser to install a node, simulate a client connection for detection every 5 minutes, 17 self-checks and 7 auto-repairs per node, plus Telegram alerts, relay nodes and decoy sites. These are the daily annoyances of the people who act as family and friends' "ops".

4. **Chinese localization caught the Chinese KOL traffic** : on the day of the jump, both dingyi and the 扫地僧笔记 channel shared the /zh page.

5. **Release pace makes the project look alive** : 81 tags in 36 days, and ByteNotebook wrote "still committing yesterday." This helps trust for a beta project.

6. **AI-topic boost** : built-in MCP plus plan/apply approval became the angle covered in AI-focused channels like ByteNotebook and SkillFoxx ("one of a kind"). But CELERITY-panel also has MCP, so this isn't fully exclusive.

### Differentiation, and whether it's the cause of growth

Differentiation has three layers: (a) two binaries plus SQLite, about 20 MiB idle; (b) "one panel for many small nodes", with nodes installed over SSH from the browser and heavy focus on ops and health checks; (c) only the censorship-resistant protocols, plus a built-in MCP. What actually drove growth were (a) and (b) plus Chinese localization: KOLs cited "lighter than Remnawave, looks good." MCP only mattered in the AI-media channel; nobody in the user-facing recommendations mentioned it. Keeping protocols few is both a positioning choice and a weakness. ByteNotebook criticized it for "lopsided protocols."

### Visibility

It spread within niche circles. Chinese proxy communities (dingyi, 扫地僧笔记, NodeSeek, ByteNotebook) pushed it in a concentrated wave around 11-02 and 11-03. English circles (Reddit, HN, X) barely picked it up. Total 250 stars, still a small repo in this space.

### Copycats

No clear copycats found. All 16 forks are personal forks of a 0-star repo. The contemporaneous mikan (09-28) and CELERITY-panel are parallel competitors, not copies.

### Takeaways

- Put a quantified, sourced comparison table in the README (memory, dependencies, features) so KOLs can summarize it in one line as "lighter than X".

- Pick the target circles' languages first, and get those docs done (Chinese, Russian, Persian) so the KOL traffic has somewhere to land.

- Narrow positioning to "family and friends" small-scale use, avoiding the feature race of big panels built for "running airports".

- Ship often with AI agents, and openly say AI wrote it, documenting AGENTS.md and the review rules. Turn that into transparency and a talking point instead of a scandal.

### Uncertain

- The exact source for the first 91 stars between 10-01 and 10-28 wasn't found (likely Russian and Chinese Telegram channels).

- The stargazers endpoint returns 404, so the quality of starring accounts can't be verified.

- After 11-03, daily gains fell back to +11–+25. Whether that holds depends on a big English-language or Russian channel repost coming later.

- Actual install base is unknown (stars aren't usage).
