# Bring Mac notch AI quotas to Windows: BrimDeck with 30k downloads in two months and under 500 stars

**What it is** A free, open-source Windows 11 app that puts a Dynamic Island-style widget at the top of the screen, showing remaining quota for AI coding tools like Claude, Codex and Cursor. It can also show lyrics and CPU temperature.

**Why it caught on** On Mac, similar tools have thousands of stars. On Windows there was only a tray icon. BrimDeck was the first to make this look good and work right after install. Two Bilibili videos and a few Chinese software sites then pushed it to ordinary Windows users as a beautification app.

**B** **How you could follow it** Don't build another Windows AI-quota Dynamic Island. Look for AI-coding companion tools that already have thousands of stars on Mac, and build a good-looking, zero-config native Windows version. Pair each release with a Bilibili video, pitch it to software download sites, and openly ask users in the app to star the repo.

Grade B: "Bring developer tools proven on Mac to Windows" is a clear, low-barrier path you can copy. But this slot is already taken by BrimDeck, and it brings downloads rather than stars (30k downloads only turned into under 500 stars). If you want reputation, you'll need to find an English community. It's spreading in small circles

A developer with one public repo and 6 followers took the Mac "see Claude / Codex quota in the notch" idea, rebuilt it as a Windows 11 Dynamic Island, and added NetEase Cloud and QQ Music lyrics. In two months the installer was downloaded about 32.6k times, but it got only 478 stars. Why it took off, why the star count is so low, and how to use this path to build a project that does earn stars: each is covered below.

### A Bilibili video posted on Oct 19 afternoon, 1 min 41 sec

On 2026 Oct 19 15:53, a Bilibili account called "Twelve-Month Dusk" posted a 1 min 41 sec video titled "BrimDeck | Bring a native Dynamic Island to Windows 11! AI usage monitor and music control," labeled "contains AI-generated content." The description says it sits at the top of the screen and shows quota and usage for AI coding tools like Claude, Codex, Cursor and Antigravity. It can also preview and control the music playing. It hides automatically in fullscreen, is open source and free, and links to the GitHub download below. By Nov 6 the video had 8,246 views and 388 favorites. Favorites were more than double the likes (150), which looks like "save it to install later."

Before this, BrimDeck had released several versions from Sep 27 to Oct 1.0 18 1.1.1, each with only tens to hundreds of downloads. Downloads only picked up after this video.

The author's account, MoFeng2223, was registered at the end of 2023 and has only this one public repo. There's no X account and no blog. I couldn't confirm the Bilibili account belongs to the author. The two video titles and their formats track the releases, so they look like they were posted by the author or someone close to them (inference).

### What it is

The most compelling line in the README is "Works out of the box." It automatically finds the Claude, Codex and Cursor accounts already logged in on the computer, with no API key to enter and no separate login. Later it added sources like Kimi Code, OpenCode, OpenRouter and MiniMax.

It's free, Apache-2.0 licensed, has no sponsorship button, and no paid tier.

### Why this one, and why now

**Mac has already shown there's demand.** CodexBar, which shows Codex / Claude usage in the Mac menu bar, has 23k stars. coucou, which watches AI coding assistants in the Mac notch, has nearly 7k, and codenotch has nearly 3k. codenotch's repo was created on Sep 5, just two days before BrimDeck's, and it does almost the same thing, only on Mac (GitHub, 11-06). Plenty of people already subscribe to several AI coding tools and hit the 5-hour quota every day as of 2026.

**The Windows side is empty.** Existing options are either taskbar or tray icons (CodeZeno's Claude-Code-Usage-Monitor with 686 stars, TokenBar with 207 stars), or Dynamic Island-style widgets that only handle music and notifications (DynamicWin with 649 stars, WinIsland with 399 stars). Both categories are half-finished projects with only a few 0 to 4 stars. BrimDeck was the first to do "Dynamic Island form + multiple AI quotas" well on Windows.

**It isn't just for programmers.** Album art and real-time lyrics from NetEase Cloud, QQ Music, Kugou and Apple Music, CPU / GPU temperatures, several themes, and pixel clocks. This makes it look like a "desktop beautification app" on Bilibili and software sites. The opening of Yunzhuanmi's reprint from Oct 23 reads "Windows 11 has no Dynamic Island, but you can install one yourself," talking about the Dynamic Island first and quotas second.

**Fast releases, each one worth filming.** From Sep 27 to Nov 2, more than a month, there were 22 releases (including betas). Each changelog is bilingual Chinese-English and includes screenshots. On Oct 28, the 1.2.2 release added Apple Music, OpenRouter quota, CPU/GPU/SSD temperatures, a "Island Holiday" theme, and a no-install portable version all at once. Stars jumped 88 that day, the biggest single-day gain so far.

### Where users come from

| Date | What happened |
|---|---|
| 10-19 | The first Bilibili video, 8,246 views |
| 10-22 | Listed on the Xiaoyi software site, with download links for Quark Cloud and Guangya Cloud |
| 10-23 | Reposted by Yunzhuanmi and Xindeba: BrimDeck, an AI quota Dynamic Island for Windows 11; also listed on China Net's software download site |
| 10-25 | The second Bilibili video (new release adding system monitoring and multiple themes), about 15k views; published the same day as 1.2.1 |
| End of October | A user submitted it for inclusion in the Windows package manager Scoop |
| From ¥10-28 | 1.2.2, 1.2.3, 1.2.4 released back to back, with downloads of 2,916 / 9,804 / 13,899 for the three versions |

No paid promotion, no big accounts reposting it. Almost no one in the English-speaking world mentions it: I found no discussion on X, Reddit or Hacker News. linux.do, where Chinese AI coding users are most concentrated, probably has people sharing it (nearly all issues and PRs in the repo come from Chinese-speaking users), but I didn't find a specific post.

That's why downloads and stars are so far apart: **about 32.6k downloads against 478 stars, roughly 70 to 1** (GitHub, 11-06). Download counts include in-app auto-updates, so they don't equal 30k individual people. But they show the users are mostly ordinary Windows users who download software from Bilibili and cloud-drive links. They don't browse GitHub, and they don't star things.

### What it looks like now

The repo already has the feel of a community. In Oct 24 the author opened a roadmap thread, edited it 64 times, and ticked off items for AI sources and music support. External contributors are working on a notification system, a command-line notification tool, displaying QQ Mail verification codes, and a module system.

The issues show how hard Windows is. In Oct 30 a user reported that an AMD 7945HX doesn't expose CPU temperature, that total system power doesn't account for an RTX 5060, and that only one of two SSDs was detected. The author's reply was blunt: "Do you have AI? You can ask your AI how to get these things on your machine and report back to me. My devices are limited too... Windows is too messy." The next day a contributor wrote a long explanation. The conclusion: BrimDeck has a rule of "no driver installs and no admin rights," so per-core CPU temperature can't be done for now.

Others are already building on it: bigmalove/mintdeck is a Linux Mint port that has been submitted as a merge request to the official Mint applet repo; mutsuki14/BrimDeckMac is building a Mac version; and there are personal forks adding Kugou lyrics, a dual-island layout, and WeChat alerts.

Momentum is slowing but hasn't dropped off: +28 in a single day in Oct 88, then +10 to 30 per day; +132 over the last 7 days (GitHub, 11-06).

There's also an external risk: it reads the Claude and Cursor credentials already logged in on the machine to check quotas. That removes the friction of entering a key, but if any vendor tightens its API or terms, the core feature could stop working.

### If it were you

**Verdict: B.** The approach is clear, low-barrier and easy to copy, but it has two weaknesses. On Windows, the "Dynamic Island + AI quota" slot is already held by BrimDeck, so a second entrant won't get the same attention. And this path brings downloads, not stars: its 30k downloads only produced under 500 stars.

**Good fit for:** people who can write native Windows desktop apps (C#/WPF, WinUI, Rust/Tauri), or who already have a small tool and want their first users. What you're after is "a project lots of people run" on your resume, not a star count.

**Not a fit for:** people who only want GitHub stars, since this kind of tool's users are on Bilibili and cloud drives, not GitHub. People who want to build yet another Windows AI-quota Dynamic Island will rank behind BrimDeck and a pile of 0-star repos. And people aiming at a Mac version: Mac already has a dozen or so of these, the biggest at 23k stars.

**How to do it:** copy the structure, not the topic. Find developer tools on Mac that already have thousands of stars, especially AI coding companions (session monitoring, agent notifications, token counting, prompt management). Check whether Windows only has a tray icon or a port with a few dozen stars, then build a polished native version. Make it zero-config from day one (auto-detect locally logged-in tools), and bundle one or two features people love to watch (music, lyrics, themes) so it spreads as a beautification app. Another route is to fill the gaps BrimDeck left: it doesn't install drivers or need admin rights, so its hardware monitoring has holes. You can contribute there directly, or build a plugin that reads LibreHardwareMonitor / HWiNFO.

**How to get users:** pair each major release with a one-to-two-minute Bilibili video titled clearly, like "Bring XX to Windows"; pitch software download sites like Xiaoyi and Yunzhuanmi; post on linux.do; submit to Scoop and winget. If you want stars, explicitly ask users in the app and in the README to star the repo, or 70 downloads will only turn into one star.

**When this window closes:** AI coding companions on Mac keep producing new repos (September alone brought two with thousands of stars, coucou and codenotch). The gap for a Windows port probably has a quarter or two left. Once these vendors build quota displays into their desktop apps themselves, or Windows adds a similar system-level feature, the gap closes (inference).

**Signs you've misread this:** ① A Windows version built this way reaches thousands of downloads in a month but still sits at double-digit stars. That would mean the path gives users, not reputation, and you should switch to English communities. ② Someone ships another AI-quota Dynamic Island on Windows within two months and overtakes BrimDeck. That would mean the slot isn't full, and grade B underestimated it. ③ Anthropic, OpenAI or Cursor blocks reading local credentials for quota checks. That would cool this whole category at once.

## Why BrimDeck (MoFeng2223/BrimDeck) took off

> Channel: GitHub | Research date: 2026-11-06 | Data card: gh_MoFeng2223/BrimDeck

### One line

BrimDeck is a "Dynamic Island" for Windows 11, putting quotas and usage for AI coding tools like Claude, Codex, Cursor, and Antigravity, plus currently playing music and system monitoring, in a bar at the top of the screen. It took off because **it was the first polished native Windows version of the "see AI quota in the notch" idea already proven on Mac (CodexBar 23k stars, coucou 7k stars, codenotch 3k stars)** , plus a music stack aimed at Chinese users (NetEase Cloud Music, QQ Music lyrics). It spread through Bilibili and Chinese software sites. Stars are a side effect; real usage is far larger than the star count: Release downloads total about 32.6k, versus only 478 stars.

### 1. Data

- Stars: 457 (data card, 2026-11-06); live GitHub API check 478. Forks 39, open issues 23. Repo created 2026-09-03, v1.0.0 released 2026-09-27. (Data card; GitHub API)

- Star curve (GitHub repo_day): 10-26 104 → 10-27 149 → **10-28 237 (+88 in one day)** → 10-29 284 → 10-30 325 → then +10~30 per day → 11-06 457. Last 7 days: +132.

- **Release downloads (GitHub API, 2026-11-06)** : v1.2.4 13,899, v1.2.3 9,804, v1.2.1 4,288, v1.2.2 2,916, v1.1.1 600, v1.2.0 432; the v1.0.x releases each got dozens; total about 32,600. Before v1.1.1 (10-18), each version had only dozens of downloads; volume only took off after 10-19. Download counts include in-app auto-updates (both installer and portable builds support them), so 32k doesn't mean 32k people. But the download-to-star ratio of about 70:1 suggests most users are ordinary Windows users who download the app directly, not GitHub developers.

- The author account MoFeng2223:2023-12 was registered with only this one public repo, 6 followers, and no X or blog. (GitHub API)

- Not on trending (the repo was under 60 days old and trending doesn't list those; it doesn't indicate a problem).

### 2. Where users came from (growth tactics)

Timeline and download numbers line up:

| Date | Event | Source | |
|---|---|---|---|
| 09-27 ~ 10-18 | v1.0.0 to v1.1.1, each version got dozens to hundreds of downloads | GitHub Releases | |
| 10-19 | Bilibili video "BrimDeck \ | Give Windows 11 a native Dynamic Island! AI usage monitor, music control", about 8,246 views | bilibili BV1q9J96eExz |
| 10-22 | Xiaoyi (xiaoyi.vc) software site listing, offering Quark and Guangya cloud-drive downloads | xiaoyi.vc/brimdeck.html | |
| 10-23 | Yunzhuanmi / Xinde8 (yunzhuanmi.com, xinde8.com) "BrimDeck: an AI quota Dynamic Island for Windows 11"; China.com Software download site listing | Web search | |
| 10-25 | Second Bilibili video "New version adds system resource monitoring and multiple built-in themes", about 15k views; v1.2.1 released the same day (4,288 downloads) | bilibili BV1m3nS66EXy | |
| Around 10-25 | User Weidows submitted a PR adding brimdeck 1.2.1 to Scoop Extras | ScoopInstaller/Extras PR #19165 | |
| 10-28 | v1.2.2 released (Apple Music, OpenCode/OpenRouter quota sources, temperature monitoring, new themes, portable build); stars +88 in one day | Releases;repo_day | |
| 10-29 / 11-02 | v1.2.3 and v1.2.4, with 9.8k and 13.9k downloads respectively | Releases | |

Channel assessment:

- **Bilibili videos (confirmed)** : The two videos total about 23k views. Both titles begin with "BrimDeck |", cover new-version features, and are tagged "contains AI-generated content". They look like they came from the author or someone close to them (uploader identity not verified). Downloads picked up right after the first video.

- **Chinese software sites / cloud-drive reposts (confirmed)** : Xiaoyi, Yunzhuanmi, Xinde8, China.com Software, Open Source Ranking (kaiyuanbang.cn), and reporank automatically or semi-automatically repost it, bringing it from GitHub to ordinary users who don't use GitHub.

- **linux.do and other AI coding communities (possible, unverified)** : the target users (heavy Chinese users subscribed to Claude/Codex/Cursor at once) are most concentrated on linux.do. The roadmap thread and many PRs come from Chinese contributors. But linux.do is behind Cloudflare, and I didn't find specific posts.

- **Scoop listing (confirmed, small volume)** .

- X / Reddit / HN: x-radar's local corpus has 60 posts mentioning BrimDeck in 0 days; nothing on Reddit or HN. Almost no one in the English-speaking world knows it.

- Xiaohongshu / Douyin: the TikHub API returned no results; unverified.

- No paid acquisition or influencer campaigns seen.

### 3. Competitors

**The macOS side is already crowded** (GitHub repos, 2026-11-06):

- steipete/CodexBar: 23,021 stars, created 2025-11; shows Codex/Claude usage in the menu bar. The forerunner of this category.

- Louis-CFM/coucou: 6,982 stars, created 2026-09-27; watches AI coding assistants from the Mac notch.

- vinzdg/codenotch: 2,996 stars, created 2026-09-05; shows Claude Code/Cursor/Codex/Antigravity quotas in the Mac notch. Nearly the same product as BrimDeck, created the same week, just on a different platform.

- wxtsky/CodeIsland 2,553, erha19/ping-island 1,143, sk-ruban/notchi 1,046: all Mac notch × AI agent.

- General Mac Dynamic Islands: TheBoredTeam/boring.notch 11,278, Ebullioscopic/Atoll 5,196.

- hamed-elfayome/Claude-Usage-Tracker 3,744, tddworks/ClaudeBar 1,572, nguyenphutrong/quotio 4,910: Mac menu-bar quota trackers.

**The Windows side is nearly empty** :

- AI quota tools: CodeZeno/Claude-Code-Usage-Monitor 686 stars (taskbar widget), quota-float 365, aqua5230/usage 345, SlavomirDurej/claude-usage-widget 342, Licoy/Quosparr 319, lwh0630/TokenBar 207 (10-24, cross-platform), and various codexbar-windows ports with 0~1 stars. All are tray or taskbar widgets, with no Dynamic Island form and no music.

- Dynamic Island apps: FlorianButz/DynamicWin 649 (2024), WinIslandProject/WinIsland 399, eIsland 335, NetSpeed-Dynamic 313, NotchPeninsula 229, kua8/Nectar 223. The Store has Dynamic Edge, Notchify, "灵动岛" and other paid or free apps, and Windhawk has a Dynamic Island mod. These only do media, notifications, or network speed, not AI quotas.

- Cross-over attempts: fffssss11/windowsAI-DynamicIsland (0 stars), asdstrind/QuotaMonitor (1 stars), nekocharm1207/kimi-island (4 stars). Same idea, but not really built out.

- Big-company features: Windows has no Dynamic Island of its own; Claude, Codex, and Cursor each show quotas only on their own web pages or CLI.

Conclusion: On GitHub, BrimDeck is already the fastest-growing project in the Windows Dynamic Island and Windows AI quota categories over the past 7 days (gain_7d 132, while peers mostly add single digits). Its total is only slightly behind DynamicWin and CodeZeno.

### 4. Why it took off

1. **The demand is proven on Mac; Windows is an empty slot** . 2026 many people subscribe to several AI coding tools and keep hitting the 5-hour-per-week quota. On Mac, similar tools routinely have thousands of stars; on Windows, the existing ones are either tiny tray icons or have only a few dozen stars. BrimDeck is the first to do the notch/Dynamic Island concept, with multiple providers' quotas, well-polished on Windows.

2. **Works out of the box** : it automatically reads locally logged-in Claude/Codex/Cursor credentials, so there's no need to paste keys (README "Works out of the box"). Many competitors require manually pasting cookies or keys.

3. **Not just for programmers** : music (NetEase Cloud Music, QQ Music lyrics, Apple Music), system monitoring, clock, and themes make it feel like a "beautification app" that non-programmers can download from Bilibili and software sites. The download-to-star ratio of ≈ 70:1 supports this.

4. **Very fast releases, strong polish** : from 9-27 to 11-02 it shipped 22 versions in just over a month (including alphas), with bilingual Chinese-English release notes and complete screenshots and GIFs. Each major release brought a new wave of downloads (v1.2.1 4.3k → v1.2.3 9.8k → v1.2.4 13.9k).

5. **Contributor community formed** : external PRs from Koooki3 (notification system, WSL notifications, brim-notify CLI), Zero-Love (QQ Mail verification code display, device battery), hoangmaituan882-hue (DLL mod system), and others; there's a roadmap Discussion #57.

### 5. Differentiation

- Versus CodexBar/codenotch on Mac: **different platform** . This is the main difference and the direct reason it took off.

- Versus Windows quota widgets (CodeZeno, quota-float, TokenBar): **different form** (a top-of-screen Dynamic Island vs. tray/taskbar), and with music and system monitoring added, it's far more polished and well suited to video-driven spread.

- Compared with Windows Dynamic Island apps (DynamicWin, WinIsland, Dynamic Edge): **it adds AI quota tracking, a real must-have** , and it fits the domestic music apps well.

- Why it took off: it's the intersection of "Windows + Dynamic Island + AI quota." That spot was proven on Mac and nobody did it well on Windows. None of the three elements is new on its own.

### 6. How visible it is

- Chatter in small circles: two Bilibili videos total about 23k views, and several Chinese software-sharing sites reposted it. The English-speaking world (X, Reddit, HN) has no discussion, x-radar shows 0 posts. No media coverage, no big accounts sharing it.

- No revenue involved (free and open source, Apache-2.0).

### 7. Copycats / derivatives

- bigmalove/mintdeck: a Linux Mint port of BrimDeck, and a PR #9192 submitted to linuxmint/cinnamon-spices-applets.

- mutsuki14/BrimDeckMac: a macOS version.

- zaozi-bilp/BrimDeck: a personal modded version (Kugou lyrics, dual-island layout, WeChat reminders).

- Zero-Love/BrimDeck publishing its own 1.2.5-alpha.4 and other releases.

- Since late October, a batch of new Windows Dynamic Island repos has appeared on GitHub (gilanga-akram, febin-ani, zab1yak, tenyyq, d4kw1n and others, each around 1 stars). Can't confirm they were influenced by it.

### 8. What to borrow

- Look at proven developer tools on Mac (especially AI coding add-ons) and build native Windows versions. Windows has a huge user base, and the same-category space is empty.

- Bundling the "developer must-have" (quota) with the "mass appeal" (music, lyrics, themes) can break out of the developer circle and into Bilibili and software-sharing sites.

- Visual polish + frequent bilingual releases + a short video per release is a low-cost way to drive downloads.

- "Zero-config reading of local credentials" greatly lowers the barrier to trying it.

### 9. Still unclear

- Whether the Bilibili uploader is the author themselves (unverified).

- 10-28's +88 in a single day: likely the direct source was a v1.2.2 release, plus reposts on linux.do, WeChat Official Accounts, and Xiaohongshu. Couldn't find the specific posts.

- How much of the 32.6k downloads came from in-app auto-updates is unknown, so the real number of independent users is unclear.

- Reading local Claude/Cursor credentials carries the risk of account bans or terms-of-service violations. If the vendors tighten up, the core feature could stop working.
